IDK how many people are running the account, but if you or a member of the team running the account has ADHD, do you have any tips for ADHD writers, particularly when trying to get WIPs done? Outlines don't work for me like 99% of the time ;_;

Tips for Writing with ADHD

Here's what works for me, but your mileage may vary...

1 - Know What Outline Works for You - You say outlines don't work for you 90% of the time, but what type of outline are you using? Many people hear the word "outline" and imagine an academic outline with roman numerals and bullet points, but that's not what most fiction writers mean when they talk about using an outline. For fiction writers, outlines can be anything from a beginning to end written summary, to a scene list, to a detailed timeline. My post How to Outline a Plot has some different things you can try. Ultimately, there's no right or wrong way to outline your story. Anything that works as a "road map" to guide you through your story can help.

2 - Pants When You've Got to Pants - Some writers are "pantsers" or in other words, they prefer not to go off an outline. Some don't even plan in advance. They "write by the seat of their pants" and let the story take them where it may. For some writers, it depends on the specific story they're working on. Some stories might require planning, others might work better if you pants them. What works for me is understanding my needs (what type of story I'll usually need to plan/outline ahead of time, and what type of story I can pants) and then planning/pantsing accordingly. If I spent time outlining a story that I could easily pants, it would definitely take the wind out of my writing sails.

3 - Schedule Your Writing Time... Sort Of... - For me, I can't just rely on myself to write when the mood strikes me. If I did that, I'd never get any writing done. So for me, it's important to have a dedicated writing time each day. That doesn't even have to mean my butt's in the chair writing from this time to this time, it just means I'll do my best to write during whatever span of time. So, let's say this week you're home every day from 2pm until 6pm and some of that time is free time. That's going to be a good time to write, so you could say you're going to sit down every day at 3pm to write. Or, you could do 10-minute writing springs every hour, or every other hour. Or you could say you'll write when the mood strikes you, but definitely from 5:30 to 6 if you didn't get it done earlier.

4 - Try Random Writing Sprints - Writing sprints in general can be a good way for people with ADHD to write. You can schedule them or you could do them when the mood strikes. Get a timer and set it to whatever works for you... 5-minutes, 10-minutes, 30-minutes, whatever. Then just set it and go when you have time. Even if you don't feel like writing, getting into that habit will make it easier to write as soon as the timer comes out.

5 - Don't Give Yourself a Hard Time - One of the most profound things I ever heard about writing resistance is that it's often the product of writing feeling stressful. In other words, the idea of writing causes you stress, so your brain says, "Avoid! Avoid!" and you sit down to write and nothing happens. One of the ways we make writing stressful for ourselves is by giving ourselves a hard time when we don't write or don't write as much as we wanted. So, just do the best you can and congratulate yourself on small victories. Find ways to make writing fun and relaxing rather than stressful and like a chore.

My Little Pony Tales (1992) Infection AU! Part 1 (CW: BODY HORROR)

Hi all, thank you for your overwhelming support of my infection AU. I really hope you enjoy it. I decided to go for something a little different than the usual infection AUs and put my own little spin on it. This AU is based on G1.5! If you have any questions about it or you'd like to see more, please let me know! With that out of the way, here's my Infection AU art.

Bon Bon

Status: Uninfected

Sanity: 80%

Health: 95%

Bon Bon wants to find a cure for the Crystallovirus, despite Flapjack Fiesta telling her it's impossible. She's willing to develop a vaccine before the infection spreads by any means necessary.

Items: Medical supplies, diary, kitchen knife (self defence)

Starlight

Status: Infected (Stage 3)

Sanity: 2%

Health: 10%

Starlight was infected by an unknown pony before being admitted to Redheart Hospital. Once she reached stage 3, she was too powerful for the staff to control so she escaped into the woods with the other zombies.

Items: Ice cream shop name tag, hospital IV, the crystal (plenty to go around...)

Clover

Status: Uninfected (amputated infected limbs)

Sanity: 78%

Health: 80%

Clover was infected by Starlight after she bit her legs. As a result, she had to get them amputated to control the spread, which works as a temporary solution against the Crystallovirus. Her disability makes her an easy target for zombies, so she prefers to be in the company of other safe ponies rather than bring alone.

Items: Flask of tea, pocket knife, seed pods

Ms. Hackney

Status: Infected (Stage 2)

Sanity: 50%

Health: 50%

Ms. Hackney is being treated at Readheart Hospital. She's currently experiencing the worst stage of the virus, where pain increases and memory begins to fade. She is highly supportive of Bon Bon's goal and hopes she can cure her before she reaches stage 3. She has aggressive outbursts regularly.

Items: Balloon (from the girls), pills (for pain), mask

Flapjack Fiesta

Status: Immune

Sanity: 85%

Health: 99%

Flapjack Fiesta is the girls' substitute teacher, who took over from Ms. Hackney after she got infected. He was born in Unicornia to two unicorn parents, causing him to be immune to the virus as it only effects earth ponies. Bon Bon is using him as a case study. He's also now the girls' primary caregiver as they were separated from their parents.

Items: Maths compass (for self defence. He's surprisingly good at using it for this purpose), textbooks, "mobile" phone (BRICK)

Dr. Hooves

Status: Uninfected (Possible immunity?)

Sanity: 90%

Health: 100%

Dr. Hooves is one of Bon Bon's biggest supporters in developing a vaccine. Because of his name. She things he has a medical licence, but he doesn't realise this. He spends a lot of time caring for his sick companion, whom he is very protective of. He believes it is possible that timelords are immune to the virus, however, he still wants to protect himself just in case.

Items: Umbrella, Nitro-9, psychic paper

Scrub-a-Dub

Status: Infected (Stage 1)

Sanity: 60%

Health: 65%

Scrub-a-Dub is a crime scene cleaner for Coltville Decon who contracted the virus from the blood of an infected pony while she was at work. She is the doctor's companion and has been quarantined in the TARDIS since she was diagnosed. The epidemic has had a major impact on her mental and physical health.

Items: Kitty (emotional support), Swiss army knife, keepsake locket

Sweetheart

Status: Uninfected

Sanity: 99%

Health: 100%

Sweetheart seems to be the least effected by the stress of the epidemic and acts the way she always did. This, along with her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse, has helped her to take on a 'medic' role of sorts. Her bag is always filled with non-perishable foods - like her favourite chocolate - just in case of an emergency.

Items: Chocolate, torch, portable radio

Bright Eyes

Status: Uninfected

Sanity: 90%

Health: 90%

Bright Eyes is Bon Bon's lab partner and the brains of the operation. Unlike Bon Bon, she's much more level-headed and utilises her critical thinking skills to help her stay sane when under pressure. Though she isn't very skilled with weaponry, she makes up for it with her high intelligence. She is one of the most valued member of the team.

Items: Portable lab kit (give to her by Flapjack), rope, notebook and pen

Melody

Status: Uninfected

Sanity: 69%

Health: 83%

Melody has been traumatised after losing her twin sisters, Jing-a-Ling and Ting-a-Ling. Her house has been taken over by zombies so she no longer has access to her belongings, including her bass. For this reason, she's turned to poetry rather than music as a source of comfort. She isn't afraid to get her hooves dirty and is skilled with a blade.

Items: Surgical blade (stolen from her mother before they were separated), poetry book (from library), music player

- Instant Dad Mode (said as if he's not in Dad Mode 99% of the time-)

- Doesn't always know what to do, but he tires his best

- Would ask what was wrong or if anything happened

- He honestly (almost) takes the most time out of anyone here to make sure you're ok [not that the others don't take time], this man is thorough

- He gives great bone crushing hugs, the type of hugs you'd never forget (in a good way)

- Gives the Dad Pep Talk (TM) to you (the good one, not the "What's 6 × 3" angry pep talk)

Kwazii

- Doesn't really know how to approach at first

- Ends up going in calm before going more energetic

- Always asks if your up to do anything to distract you from whatever may have happened

- Would 100% tell you stories about Calico Jack or some things they've done before joining the Octonauts

- Wraps their tail around your arm/hand/wrist in comfort (if you're ok with that)

- You have a high chance of getting softly tackles and purred on by Kwazii. As well as getting biscuits made on you

Peso

- I'm 90% sure he's the oldest (if not one of the middle-older) of like, 50- most are cousins but they are basically siblings in a Spanish family (- from a Spanish person)

- The first time he's a little nervous, but after that they find things that will work for you ^^

- Would build a pillow fort, no questions asked. They are the 2nd best in the Octopod when it comes to pillow forts

- Probably pulls out a sticker sheet and gives you some, ESPECIALLY if they have puns

- Movie night, you guys just vibe in a pillow fort watching some good movies with some snacks. Maybe the Vegimals will join you guys

Dashi

- No hesitation, grabs your hand (or asks you to follow her if you don't like touch) and plans something fun to do

- One of the first questions out if their mouth is if you want/need to vent

- Hypes you up no matter what. Got in an argument? Get it, you stood firm and held your ground. Someone left you? You're going to get better, you're doing amazing now.

- She'll show you her photo album/vidoes, especially photos of funny moments she managed to capture

- They'd 100% pull out a box of horror movies that are so bad they are funny, and spend the night watching them with you

Tweak

- It takes a bit for Tweak to fully notice, but when they do, it's game over

- Pillow Fort. You can't tell me that they aren't the best at making pillow forts

- Yes, they are working on something while you're talking (if you are OK with talking) but she is paying attention and holding on to every detail while planning on what to say

- After a while (especially if it's late) they will have their video game console ready to go with another controller ready for use (if you want to play)

- Probably plays some more chill and calming games, like Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing, or Uno

- That or more high energy games, like Splatoon, Bioshock, or Overwatch (those games do a good job at taking your mind off of things)

Shellington

- Gestures for you to give them your hand

- Guess what? You now own a very cool looking piece of coral

- After that they lead you to their lab and starts setting up a little blanket fort (different from a pillow fort)/nest for you guys to vibe in

- The Vegimals join after a little while and will just lay on you guys

- Shellington would read to you, no questions asked

- That, or set up a projector they have and watch some movies (probably Disney or Pixar, maybe a history movie or two)

Professor Inkling

- Looks at you for a bit to get a good read on you, similar to Shellington

- After a while he'll approach you and ask for you to follow him to the Library

- There, there's already tea and other things ready for you guys

- Doesn't pressure you to talk to him about anything, just grabs a book and starts reading (out loud if you ask)

- Give some of the BEST advice. He's pretty old, and is seen as a grandfather by anyone he works with. This dude has wisdom and knows how to give it to you in a nice manner

Vegimals

- Will either bake something for you, or get you to help them bake for others (and yourself, depends on what you like)

- You get to see the chaos unfold around you as flour rains down around you

- That, or they will take you to the Garden Pod to do some gardening with them (this normally ties in with baking/cooking tho, they need to get ingredients)

- I headcanon that they can purr, and they pur LOUD

- One would just climb on your back and start purring (probably Salepeño, Barrot, or Codish)

Tracker

- Gives you their jacket, and no, they won't take no for am answer here

- Also makes you some hot coco/coffee/tea

- Lets you talk when you want to, it's your choice

- Likes to show you cool things they found to take your mind off of things

- At some point they'll break the (likely) silence with a flurry of encouragement and affection, "You're doing amazing", "I know things are rough, but you'll be able to pull through", "You should be proud of yourself, you're doing well" and other other things

Professor Natquik

- He knows. That's it. He knows

- Doesn't even question it that much, he kinda just... takes you???

- Think about the thing cat's do with their kittens, that

- Makes you a nice drink, sits you down, and just talks with you. You don't have to respond if you don't want to, he'll gladly ramble on about his work and support for you

- Tells some really funny stories (such as how he met Barnacles by hitting him in the face with a snowball) [headcanon]

- You'll probably end up falling asleep by mistake, but he's happy. Brings out a fluffy blanket and drapes it over you. Get some rest, you deserve it ^^

Bianca

- Orson and Ursa are already on you asking questions, but they only want to cheer you up and help you feel better

- Bianca probably sends them off to play for a bit while she stays with you

- Instant hug (if you're ok with it), just as strong as Barnacles

- She gives amazing advice, and is always willing to help (and throw hands, just in case)

- Ursa and Orson come back after a while with little snow bunnies they made

Ranger Marsh

- Would ask what was wrong but walk away before you could answer

- Then he'd have a baby alligator in his arms and just hand it to you/put it on your lap

- Congratulations, you now have a therapy alligator

- He would also hand you a packet of crackers and some water. Don't think when you're dehydrated/hungry, there's a fair chance that your brain and body is being pissy. He's a walking Snickers ad in a way

- Also does the (good) Dad Pep Talk (TM) at the end

- How they respond depends on where you are, so for this I'll just say your guys are in the Amazon-

- Congratulations, you are now in a Capybara cuddle pile with Calico Jack laughing (but in a nice way, like "aww, cuddle pile")

- He does the same thing as Kwazii, wraps their tail around your arm/hand/wrist (if you're ok with it) and does the purr

- Like Grandfather like Grandspawn

- Would 100% make a fake treasure hunt for you to take your mind off of things

Paani

- I don't know much about Panni, but I feel like he'd offer you a nice rock

- If you guys are outside he'd try to take you to a place with a good view and have a little picnic with you (that they TOTALLY didn't make last minute /s [he made it last minute] )

- Just vibes with you watching the sky and clouds. Also probably looked at the sun by mistakes at least once no I'm not projecting

- Will try to get you to talk about it, but will back off if you don't want to. He's glad to fill the silence with things he's done

his interest in kink came first when he was younger, thru the elf equivalent of his teens as he tried to figure out sex acts that interested him beyond the abstract of touch-dick-feel-good, then the inkling of hmmm maybe there's something physically wrong with me as he got a little older and it stopped being excusable that he was a bit of a klutz, but he became active in the scene as an adult around the same time he was getting official diagnoses in his late 90s, early 100s

Who exactly would Essek have mentored under????

good question! honestly, he probably hasn't (hadn't??) with the exception of/until zehra because before his guides he hadn't really spent too long in relationships, kink or otherwise. he attended plenty of workshops when he was starting out and has done scenes with several others in the community like, casually, but he is probably not as experienced as readers (or caleb) would assume

it was the other way around actually! kink is not precisely taboo in rosohna, not the same way it is irl or even in the empire; it's generally expected that most folks, particularly those in noble circles ESPECIALLY if they're a longer lived race, have dabbled at least a little. rather, its hush-hush to like, allow those same nobles the freedom to operate outside the expectations of their circles. like there can be repercussions, but its mostly just private business is private. caleb, however, is very observant and there was like, a kink equivalent of the "i like your shoelaces" deal, which absolutely delighted testament

Is Frumpkin an ordinary cat in this fic or a familiar?

he is a familiar! i've fudged some things from cannon/dnd raw because fuck you its fanfic i can do what i want, but frumpkin is still a familiar, still a fae creature, still telepathically linked to caleb, and still able to be summoned and banished as needed. its absolutely impossible to show given how 99% of the fic is from essek's pov, but caleb very politely bribes frumpkin with mlem sticks to please leave him and his guest alone until such and such time when his guest will leave so caleb can fuck in peace (per yasha's suggestion given that cats are not common in rosohna, so it follows that essek has not much interacted with them (he has not) and may be uncomfortable with the staring (he would be))

(further fun frumpkin fact, caleb had to get a special permit to have his familiar's default form be "cat" because they are a non-native species lmao)

How did Beau and Yasha meet??? What brought them to Xhorhas?

they met through caleb and molly respectively; after molly's "death", yasha had a hard time staying in rexxentrum without feeling overwhelmed, so when beau got the opportunity to be part of the souls efforts to set up a library in rosohna, they got shotgun married and went somewhere new

How did Essek meet his Guides?

the tl;dr of it is basically lapin walked up at some event and was basically like my wife girlfriend and i saw you across the bar and we really like your vibe lmao. essek was mildly put off because he only likes men and zehra was basically like well thats fine because im a lesbian and you're obviously not a woman but that doesn't mean things cant be interesting, queue lapin being like yeah you dont have to fuck to have fun!! and essek was so baffled he agreed to get to know them and then somehow it was two years later and he was in their wedding party with friendship nipple piercings

absolutely feel free to ask questions even if you think they'll be answered in fic!! i don't mind fielding them because like, tbh, i am not THAT good of a writer so its entirely possible i wont think to really explain xyz thing because its obvious to me (there have definitely been SEVERAL things ive had to last minute edit into following chapters to explain a thing previously because people commented like wait what is this??? because i just... knew what it was so obviously everyone else would lmao). worse case scenario i'll pull a neil and go wait and see

Ok first of all to get That out of the way uhh the whole star Allies Susie desc got mistranslated(classic star allies!) basically it’s supposed to be like “helping other planets with technology” and the whole exterminate thing is supposed to be just crushing bad people okay are we clear did we get that good (also I’m gonna be putting my Suzy kaomoji between points because I Said So(It might act b me favorite ?? I’m reely happy w how it turned out 😙my magolor kaomoji ᴑ /₍⸌╷╷⸍₎\ ᴑ is close but I think it’s mostly bc I felt proud as hell after figuring out how to put the ears on one line)

Ok first off her lore basically blah blah Suzy was Exposed To The Internet At A Young Age

Fun(?????????) fact😋 as it makes no sense for Max to have done those experiments with star dream with his only daughter in close proximity so it’s highly likely that Suzy disobeyed her fathers warnings and prohibition and technically caused her own disappearance (why am I mentioning dis??😏ermm aheu heu you’ll c)

Suzy returns after seeing the Horrors and now works for Max

Come to think of it idk if Suzy even knew of max’s real goal like ik the novel made it so he openly misses her but ?? The novel also made him live at the end so No Im not counting that data in my

Anyway blah blah Suzy feels resentment for max and how either A)simple minded his goal of “unlimited money” is or B) that he doesn’t even recognize her

Notably this is prevalent in the Japanese version as shown which means he intentionally tried to forget his feelings (in other words what makes a human=human) and then started forgetting them more after more usage but didn’t see a problem with it (why are the haltmanns Like That)

Anyway time for the main story events

It’s been established that this is after Susie clawed her way out of hell(???) (before magolor made it cool) at like idk 11 years old so that’s slightly less impressive than the average Kirby adventure

Also that max has now lost abt 90% of his self (willingly??? Idk don’t ask me) and appears to focus entirely on money

Mr maxx pulls a questionable rant out at Kirby and tries to obliterate this 9 year olds entire world after losing a single battle but Suzy takes the helmet right after it touches his head(a tiny bit too late to enact the action?? A tiny bit too early???? Is this the worst outcome????Could he have survived and been reasoned with after defeat ???? I still don’t know STOP ASKING ME) and she enacts her famous line

She was so real for that she yippyd before it was cool oh anyway she then comes out(WOOOO GOOD FOR HER💥💥💥💥💥) as someone who’s been Against max all this time (in other words…disobeying her father…..😏😏😏I can’t believe Suzy made a Suzy reference)

However her calculated plan backfires and as the helmet touched his head but he didn’t have the helmet he gets 99% of his entire self destroyed and now the cold calculated machine decides to destroy the universe (erm…WHOOPS!😂😂😂 susie is so losercoded I can’t believe everyone calls her the Normal Person how do you screw up a plan this bad like seriously oh my god marx and magolor enacted their plan perfectly and taranza managed to technically bring the heros of the lower worlds to sectonia but Susie completely screwed up they should start calling her Losie)

However when learning of this susie doesn’t react in a normal way like there’s no sulking or sad face she gets up and immediately thinks of a plan to defeat star dream (giving Kirby the gimmick that notably cannot fly for very long without certain abilities and has quite short ranged attacks) then meta knight shows up n gives a much better plan by using his cool ship

As you can see her body language is all formal and cool and she’s all commanding and stuff (her autistic stare has captivated my soul) HOWEVER😏😏😏😏😂😏ohhh babyyyy I was dying after realizing this

As soon as they fly off screen susie immediately establishes a more desperate pose and language (in like. Every other version I think this is the American version even Europe got it better Suzy uses a formal name for Kirby instead of pinky)

In other words Suzy refuses to show her weakness in front of people(LOSIE THEORY CONFIRMED??????) then at the end she immediately leaves pop star instead of like lingering around to celebrate with Kirby like taranza did or the end of rtdl with Kirby’s chums (u can probably use ur imagination for the possible reasons she chooses to be alone😙😙😙)

ok robobot events over wooo anyway I Wasnt Sure How To Title This

Robobot is known for having a similar lore story to Taranza where villian that dies actually lost their self prior to the events of the game and the villian who gets redeemed had a persona connection with them

When we later see Suzy in Allies she appears Completely Normal And Fine compared to taranza

However I really doubt that she’s just FINE I mean you saw during the cutscenes I bet offscreen she’s tormented by thinking abt what her dad could have been and how he ended up and how she caused his fate (ok I changed my mind I don’t want losie theory to be confirmed take it back)

yes!! i love the confirmation that usopp is the crew's stylist and makes their clothes. actually, i think oda might have mentioned something about usopp making t-shirts but i've also been re-reading saint young men so my wires are getting crossed, probably.

audience surrogate jinbe is great and helpful ngl. he's the only one asking the right questions and i love him for it. also?? they did just a fantastic job seamlessly adding him to the crew here. he had so many cool scenes i am so happy for him. 😭

i wanna say the most out of focus character in the movie was,,, zoro? he was. there. like he did a lot of cool things, but he didn't do a whole lot. which is fine bc i think characters like brook and usopp have been out of focus in the manga so giving them some time to shine isn't a bad thing. i honestly think the only thing zoro got out of the movie was free booze, he's happy. i'm happy.

"oh no not another movie about a new character from a main character's childhood who we never met until now" actually i felt like uta's addition to the movie was a lot less contrived than sabo surviving a ship explosion, and tbf luffy is not really one to talk about his past all that much so it works for me.

most of the side characters were well intergrated into the movie with the exception of kalifa, i wish she'd done more but i guess there were already a lot of characters to organize.

What kinda technology do people use to listen to music in the locality space setting? Is it the same as irl or is there cool sci-fi technology for it, or both? Is it different for pajiir and delphonus?

This is such a good question, Kendrick, and it helped me iron out some worldbuilding thoughts about warps. I'm guessing this came from my ask answer about Pat's old stuff, which got me kind of stuck to start - the reason he has old music stuff is because in Old Canon he was the music guy, king of the radio. The canon was weird back then, with Spinder's whole family being faeries living on Earth. I believe canonically Spinder was born in 1958, so radio and record players were a big part of his childhood. But factoring in all of the locality space worldbuilding, and keeping my timeline straight, I think it's a little more complicated.

The space era that they live in, with relatively easy access to space and permawarps, came to be about 90-100 years ago, which means that's about when there started to be a major shift in music delivery, because you could then receive music via warp from just about anywhere. I think there was already essentially a galaxy-sized Napster network, because warp witches and also starships existed before the launch era, but in terms of radio/streaming formats that's when things really took off. The only problem was you needed a warp receiver, and at first the only stable mechanical warps were those generated by enchanted machine song, which meant that all of your music was delivered with extra noise, something like how CRT TVs make high-pitched whining noises. Not ideal, but extremely popular. Then someone figured out how to besmallen the technology used for warp gates, and true hi-fi warp radio was born. Which is a long-winded way of saying by the time Pat was born 40 years ago this was a solved problem. The thing is, I always imagined him having vintage stuff because it's stuff from when he grew up, not because he's a collector (though he could be that too). So what makes his music paraphernalia outdated?

Partly it's that it still relies on midsize receivers, which are still small enough to fit in a stereo, but fill a very different niche than the much smaller receivers that became available when he was a teenager and that he probably still owns instances of. I also think he's kind of a nerd about music stuff and was into amateur radio, warp and otherwise, for a while, so he has that stuff too. Also, despite the fact that magic allows most ship environments to be fairly planet-like, oh boy is it easy to market a music storage format to planetsiders based on the fact that it could work in zero g. Don't ask me how it works in zero g, but it does, somehow. Maybe not even well, because that's not the point - 99% of buyers are going to be using it in an environment with gravity. But in general formats did get hardier. I think it would be extremely funny if current music storage formats are just like. cuboids. and you put them in the player slot and its suspension-laser-refraction array can read a shit ton of data out of it, sort of like encoding things in diamonds. I'm not totally sure about that one but making the jump from "space CD" to "music cube" or something similar would make a lot of stuff outdated. So I guess to answer your second question it's kind of the same, especially for planetsiders (radio waves never became obsolete &c.) but there's some weird scifi stuff in there somewhere beyond warp receivers, which are pretty everyday.

Now for Pajiir and Delphonus I do actually have a more solid answer, which is: it's mostly the same as real life, with some 1920s-30s flavoring, though a lot of technology is circuit mycelium on the inside, and the internet has been around a whole lot longer so the concept of streaming/digital files/internet radio is even more established. That said, there is one fictional format that actually is integral to the whole plot of Icepith: the twist. (I swear I had a cooler name for it but this works.) The basic concept is that pieces of music tracks are recorded on metal wires and twisted together as essentially an industrial cable segment. A player can play them all in tandem, but importantly, you can untwist the twist and replace parts of it, which makes remixing easy and has led to a huge remixing culture among imbrath (the underground bat people, like Rolf), and by extension nswl. This is the basis of Snap and Rolf's doomed music career, and of Oruga's pirating. Rolf's friends/lovers who supply Oruga are wire producers.

i hope i dont sound like i am immediately picking apart what you said because i basically agree with 99% of it i just wanted to add a couple of thoughts i had (this got so much longer than i intended i am so sorry)

I don’t like how he said to be mindful about the intentions of people who raised the question, because a lot of them had genuine concern about it being a possibility and this could have been a very serious and dangerous thing if it had been true.

i fully agree with what you said here - however i feel like the death threats/harassment he was getting kinda justifies what he was saying to an extent. in his position, i doubt he is looking at each and every account to figure out whether the individual was coming from a place of concern or was adding onto the harassment. i don't think outright dismissing things like this is a good idea so to speak, but to me it does make sense, from his pov, to tell people to be mindful. many of those people were coming from a place of concern, but i can see how some of it could have came off as less than such in addition to the threats he was getting even though they were mostly separate situations. if this hadn't been the case it would have rubbed me more in the wrong way, but i can understand why he would say it in this scenario even if its like :/.

however this is something i would encourage of everyone - he is not wrong to basically be saying check the source of where you are getting your information from. i would say 90% of the people talking about it were acting in good faith, but that is not always the case, and people acting in bad faith can still have good points that should be taken seriously. it is just something that i think everyone should take note of - in any situation everyone is going to have bias and if you're going to take someones words as fact you should recognize that. that goes for quackity's words too. he is obviously biased in one way in this situation which doesnt mean he is lying in every word he says, but take that into account when looking at what he says. same goes for the admins who speak out you know?

And great that he’s saying that there has been some restructuring made within the team, and hopefully these changes will only leave the studios with competent people who are good intentioned towards everyone involved. I won’t like though, I fail to see how asking for everyone’s feedback and taking it into account to make these changes wasn’t an option. Also the fact that this restructuring ended up causing them to massively letting go of all the twitter teams as well as some other admins is still an issue.

this is a double edged sword imo - im gonna take it in two parts. he says that the restructuring is good and full of people who are good intentioned, but there really is no way to know that? i am under the assumption that he thought the first set of people were good and they weren't, and im not saying we can't trust these people/his judgement, but there truly is no way to know until things progress. id like to trust that the new management is good, but im wary just because of everything and it is hard to put trust into the new managment without seeing anything come out of it. i know these things take time, but its hard to blindly trust that these guys are good when there is nothing to prove it.

on the twitter admins/other admins, as much as i do not agree with it, it does make sense. it sucks and i hate that it happened, but it was pretty clear that financially keeping the same amount of admins on the team wasn't going to work. removing the twitter admins seems like a logical choice (i loved what they did. i wish they weren't removed. but in the grand scheme of things it does make sense to let them go first because even if it sucks the life and some of the fun out of it, their jobs were not essential to keeping the server running) but the way it was gone about was so... not it. the way they were all informed of how they were fired was just not good. point blank not good. i dont know if there was a way to keep them on while being able to pay them, im inclined to believe at the moment he probably wasn't lying and there wasn't, but it doesnt change the fact that that situation was not handled well. they could have let them go with more communication to the situation. thats what bothers me the most.

Meanwhile people will discuss these topics that are so far removed from the main issue and focus less on what the admins went through.

THIS!!! i do understand why people have brought talks about lore and stuff into this conversation - it highlights what the admins went through using tangible examples lol, but part of me wishes they hadn't because exactly as you said. people focus on these issues and not the other ones! it happened at the start of this too, where people focus on the lore/story related problems (which isn't a wrong thing to point out) but in doing so kinda push away the other issues even if that isnt the intent. sharing these stories was not to complain about pushing x creators lore to the front and holding y creator's back but to highlight some of the conditions and i wish that didn't get misconstrued as much as i feel like it has.

Will never forget when the union released their first statement and I saw people either saying that they were a fake account trying to smear the reputation project or that quackity was going to jail, I was like « oh my, we are cooked » 😭

“I can’t believe we’re having cherry pie at midnight.” Beatrice says, her legs resting on top of his thighs as the two sit on the couch, “And watching Peaky Blinders.” the gunshot that echoed from the tv didn’t even phase them, “And you got me flowers.”

“It’s been a while since I got you some.” he smirks, chewing his forkful as he rubs her calf, “How’s it though? Good?”

Beatrice stares at him as if he asked the dumbest question ever, “Good?You know, when you told me you could bake I thought ‘wow,he’s husband material alright.’.” she finishes her sentence with a giggle, moving her calf back and forth on his hold because she was so relaxed.

“And I am,aren’t I?”

“Of course you are.” she pokes his side with her foot, squeaking when he just grabs her ankle and traps her there, “You are the best husband that ever existed.”

Rooster’s cheeks flushed a soft red and he scratched the bridge of his nose sheepishly, avoiding her eyes for a second, “Anyway,” he says as he clears his throat, ‘How was work? Did Evelyn stay long?”

‘Honestly,” she gestures with her fork, looking at the ceiling, “It was so crazy, like, the amount of people,Roos. It’s like it tripled in a matter of months! It really was wild because me,Shells and Jessie had to switch spots every now and again while Penny stayed behind the counter! But it was really fun…oh! And Ev stayed for about…half an hour? Maybe, she didn’t plan on staying long to be honest, she just wanted to see everyone because she missed us…and to tell Jake she was fine, he kept messaging her.”

“Honestly that’s how I felt when I was away.” he murmured, rubbing her calf again, “I worried so much,gorgeous.”

Beatrice’s eyes softened as she looked at him, placing the empty plate on the coffee table - far enough from Jolene so she wouldn’t snatch a bite - and pushing herself to her knees. He already knew what was going after, so he set his plate aside as well and leaned back so she could sit on his lap, his sigh of relief once she does makes her smile, “You like me sitting on your lap?”

“Or on my face.” she gasps in shock, cheeks turning red, “Both are great for me.”

“Rooster.”

“Bea.”

They stare at each other for a few seconds, eventually breaking into quiet laughter before their foreheads met, “...I know you worry about me.” she whispered, “And that you were even more worried because you were far away from me.” her hands gently cup his cheeks and brush her thumbs over his cheekbones, “I admit I was really nervous, I really was…but at least you came back soon and saw Nikki’s birth.”

His smile widens, “I did. It was the most magical thing ever.” he pauses “And the most terrifying one, seeing you passed out…was fucking scary, but at least everything went well.”

“And you were with me as Nikki grew into a healthy six months old baby.” she says, “...she’s six months old,Roos. Can you believe it? She’ll be one year old next year. Like…in a matter of months!”

“And I’ll be thirty nine.” he frowns a bit, “...Jesus.”

“You look great for a thirty nine years old man.” she counters, gently brushing her fingers on his temples, “You still look handsome as the first time I saw you…and you’ll get even better as you get older.” he huffs out a disbelieved laugh, but Beatrice is serious, “I swear, Roos you are so handsome. And you look at least in your early thirties.”

“Watch until I get my first gray hairs.”

‘You’ll be a silver fox.” she grins when he laughs, unabashedly and loud, his hands caressing her hips and down her thighs, “You know that. You know you’ll be absolutely handsome when you get older.”

Bradley’s smile softened because his wife was so incredibly sweet without even trying to. He leans up to meet her lips in a lazy kiss, one that was sweet and full of promise at the same time, “Thank you,gorgeous.” he smirks, “You’ll look even better too.”

Beatrice giggles, nuzzling his neck and letting him hug her waist, both of them going quiet after a while, the silence only breaking because of the gentle sound of rain coming from the outside. Beatrice loved this serenity and calmness whenever they were together, it was one of her favorite moments: just enjoying each other, with or without Nikki present, was amazing.

Whenever Nicole was around, their daughter liked to be almost sandwiched between them, gurgling giggles and wriggling against them, loving the attention from both of her parents. “...you know,Evelyn will be three months pregnant.” she muttered, “She might do a baby shower.”

Rooster blinked in surprise, “Evelyn? A baby shower? Really?”

“I know I couldn’t believe myself.” she laughs, “But it has something to do with her family coming over, especially both of her grandmas. She said it’ll be fun…she hopes.” Beatrice drops her head on his shoulder as his hand moves up and down her spine, following the line that went up to her neck then back down to her tailbone with the tips of his finger, “We didn’t do one for Nicole,did we?”

He arches his eyebrows with his eyes still on the tv, “We didn’t have to, people just gave us things without us even asking.”

“True.” she turns to watch the tv as well, seeing Tommy Shelby scream at someone who she couldn’t identify, “Would you want something like that?”

“Hm?”

“For our future kids? Like…a baby shower?” Beatrice’s question was hesitant, so much that Rooster tilted his head to look at her, arching his brow, “Well…we talked about having more.” and she felt stupid for thinking he’d be upset, or he’d tell her to ‘not think about that now’

It was Rooster for god’s sake.

“Do you want to? I mean,” he laughs softly, scratching his jaw, ‘Considering how everything went with Nicole, do we even need to?” 

“Well,good point.” she laughs, dropping her head on his chest as thunder rumbled above them, the rain gaining more force outside, “Maybe not,huh?”

“Think about it,” he begins while still rubbing her back, “We can use some of Nicole’s old clothes to the new kids.” he shrugs, “Recycling, reusing, I mean most of her clothes are gender neutral too, we don’t have to worry about that.”

Beatrice’s smile widened as she looked at his chest, her body feeling so light because of his words. Rooster was an incredible partner, almost unreal sometimes, and she felt he was feeling that more and more as time went by. Maybe he stopped blaming himself so much - finally- maybe he noticed he deserves to have the good things in his life without fearing the worst.

“I like that.” she murmurs, smelling his cologne as she buries her face into his shirt, “I really like that.”

“Are you sleepy?”

Was she? The yawn she tried to hold back was enough of an answer, making her laughter appear distorted when she managed to giggle at him, “A little.” she whispers, “I’m full and happy and warm…and I don’t really want to move.”

“Wanna sleep on the couch?” he suggests and she has to look at him to see if he was serious, “It could fit both of us. Back pain be damned.” Beatrice laughs, still holding onto him only to prop her chin onto his pectorals.

“Hmmm…tempting,but I do like our bed.” she says, “And I want to take a shower before we go…and,” another yawn and a shake of her head, “And I’m getting too tired to form sentences,Roos.”

“Well,” he turns on the tv, “You know what that means,” she hears him placing the plate on top of the other, “I gotta carry you upstairs.”

‘You don’t have to-!” she squeaked because of course he’d just ignore her and pick her up like she weighed less than Nicole. Beatrice laughs, dropping her face on his neck as he walks up the stairs with Jojo following them.

“I’m sorry,” he grins, “Did you say something?” and he adjusts her body in his grasp by bouncing her up, cupping her ass cheeks perfectly as he walks into their bedroom, only setting her down after kissing her forehead and humming against her skin, ‘Because I couldn’t hear it.”

Beatrice smiles, meeting his lips in a sweet kiss, breaking away with a gentle smack with her eyes soft and sleepy, “I didn’t say anything.” she grins, kissing the three scars on his chin before she steps away from him, “I’m going to take a quick shower, okay? Won’t take too long.” she’s already kicking off her shoes and unbuttoning her pants, walking her sock covered feet to the bathroom and disappearing from his view.

Rooster just smiles hearing her soft yawn coming from the bathroom, “I’ll clean everything downstairs.” he says, “Won’t take too long either.”

Beatrice let out a positive hum, probably because she was brushing her teeth and he took that as his cue to leave. He pet Jolene in the hallway, whistling so she’d follow him back downstairs just to keep him some company. 

He gathered the plates and the pie - after eating another part of the crust and closing his eyes because good God he was so good at this - placing the now room temperature dessert inside the fridge, closing the door with his elbow and licking his fingers clean, ‘I’m a great baker.” he turns to Jolene who’s now sitting patiently next to him as he approaches the sink, “I might bake something for you guys, you know? It’d be pretty good, something safe for dogs.”

The pittie whines in her throat, tapping her paws excitedly on the tiled floor “You’d like that,huh?” he asks while washing the plates and then putting them in the cabinets once they were dry. He pauses for a second, his hand resting on the lower side of the cabinet as he notices how domestic their life was.

He remembers when he was younger, just starting in the Navy, how some of his friends couldn’t imagine domesticity. A partner? Yes, but some - if not most - dreaded the idea of domesticity because it sounded so boring. Rooster didn’t hate it, in fact he wanted domesticity but couldn’t imagine himself getting it so soon in his life.

Most of his days were spent alone but he imagined what it’d be like…what it’d be like to have someone to come home to. He didn’t have anyone, so in reality the idea of coming back to his small apartment back then was almost dreadful, but what could he do? So now, these little things - baking for his wife, washing dishes, spending time with Nicole - were so important to him.

As important as his job was if he was honest.

This downtime that some officers didn’t seem to like, not all of them thankfully, but some of them. Amazingly the same ones who always complained about their wives and how they couldn’t wait to be deployed again.

Shit people they were.

“Hey.” he looks up when he hears her voice, her hair just a bit damp because of the steam and the long shirt - another one that belonged to him, this one simply had SIERRA NEVADA on it - that touched her thighs and hugged on her hips, feet bare, “I was going to help you clean up.”

He smiles, dropping his head a bit, “Ah,gorgeous, you don’t have to.” he says, “I thought you were going to wait for me in bed.”

Beatrice hummed, the soft ‘tap tap’ of her soles hitting the cold tiles only signaled she was approaching him, eventually standing on his side and hugging his muddle. Her ear was right on top of his heart and his arm wrapped around her shoulders, “Not the same without you.” 

He clenched his eyes with a pained smile because she kept being too cute for his own good. Beatrice snuggles close to him, her legs moving happily as he carries her up to their bedroom once more, this time gently setting her on the bed. His laugh when she immediately burrows herself under the covers, leaving only the upper part of her head and her hair out was adorable, “I’m a mole.” he hears her say, watching her face disappear under the covers, “I live in the darkness.”

His smile turns fond, “Yep, yep you do.” she peeks from under the covers at him, then pulls half of the blanket they kept on the edge up to her shoulder, “Baby, are you really that cold?”

He left the bathroom to see Beatrice’s eyes following him, more specifically the way his hips moved - and in turn the elastic got a liiitle bit lower every time, exposing his Adonis lines and the happy trail that was darker than his hair - slowly climbing into the bed, under the covers and opening his arms, “C’mere.’ she just scoots over, wrapping herself around him like a spider monkey.

He smiles when her body relaxes and her cheek is pressed to his chest, “Comfortable?”

They stay quiet for a few seconds and Rooster knows she’s about to ask something because of how he feels her wriggling a bit, “What’s happening,gorgeous?”

How to abandon kpop ships and throw yourself into the water of sanity

First things first, i used to ship a few idols to the point of utter obsession and i wasn't liking the toxicity. I used to thrive on their interactions and crumbs but then i was never ever satisfied cause let's face it, they were just normal things or conversations anyone would do to someone in their group or band.

So I've been trying to get out of these inescapable ships cause i personally believe its toxic and misguiding especially to young fans, trust me, they take it very seriously. I mean, that's only my opinion and if you guys are shipping only for funsies, that's tooooootally fine. Please don't come at me, folks. (｡╯︵╰｡)

SO i found a way to stop obsessing over these strangers on the internet :

Pressure from Companies : Their companies 70% of the time force them to have these interactions. I'm sure some are genuine, obviously ლ(•ω •ლ) but i think some of this are deliberately captured in a way that attracts shippers. I mean, the companies know about the shipping and I've heard that(from undisclosable resources) most idols are very uncomfortable with shipping.

Korea is a (90%)homophobic country : Again, i'm not saying everyone is homophobic but in reality most Koreans are in fact homophobic and that includes some or most of the idols as well. Some of them may be an ally but they may not be homosexual themselves. Even if they are by any chance, they will never disclose it.

Focus on their music/work/art and then go home : If you are into kpop, then only view them as music artists and nothing more than that. That is, unless you don't want to remain sane. DON'T view their content that's got nothing to do with their work/music cause at the end of the day, they're really music artists and that's all we should really focus on. I know some of you can disagree with me and that's okay. I mean they are just regular people (albeit attractive ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ) like us who are doing their job. Tbh, I'm not into pop music much and i like very few artists and am choosy over the songs that i listen to. By no means, do i think pop music is inferior. Infact its great and i do like a few pop artists but generally listen to other genres. These days, kpop has also evolved to fit in many other genres which is noice SO getting back to the story, i was watching all their content (vlives, yadayada) for no reason at all. I mean some are entertaining, no lie, but honestly we don't have to watch all their content cause one, its time consuming and two, why. This may differ for everyone and that's okay. You do you.

Idols are different off screen and are not innocent : most (90%) idols generally have idol persona and are completely different off screen. I heard (questionable resources so take this with a grain of salt (￢‿￢ )) that most idols, especially bg idols are not what you think they are. They tend to be womanizers/playboys and sympathise with trash dastards like ykw big bang guy seungsrice, the other guy , i don't know his name and don't want to know it either. I could be wrong but i heard that senior bg idols have chat groups for the sole purpose of ogling and objectifying female idols (by posting inappropriate content) and these seniors add the junior idols to those groups as well. Being disrespectful to women or anyone for that matter is immoral (atleast to me) and I'm sorry, i don't get the men will be men trope. Men/everyone can be respectful. It's not that hard. So basically these idols are not saints and can be utter assholes just like the rest of the world. I also heard some really young bg idols around their early twenties, i won't say who, go to clubs for ons and tend to like sleeping with a lot of girls so 99% of the homosexual ships are not real.

Self-love sista : i know it can be hard to break up with a ship so take your time. Start focusing on yourself and view their work only as a source of entertainment. Its not offensive cause that's what they are. They are people doing a job. They also only view you as a collective, just a fan, so what's the use of knowing them or their personality in-depth. Its irrelevant. When you start viewing them as employees, the obsession towards them should reduce and they also would get the privacy they've always wanted. So i think its a win-win.

Seriously though when you read the book Rowling wants so hard to create that kind of "what's gonna happen, we don't know what else could be tomorrow morning" tension, but it. Just doesn't work. This is why people laser-focus on Ron's departure. Because it lasted. It went on for four fucking chapters. 1. What common traits do you share with your oc? What about them is the least like you?

we're both kind, queer, and we both admire our mothers. however heather is very close to her religion because she admires her parents so much who are devout. she's a little more modern with her beliefs tho. but even still, im definitely not religious at all so i cant rly relate to her in that sense haha

5. What is your oc’s patience like? When waiting for something, are they able to sit still or do they fidget? How do they fidget?

she's sooo patient. she's actually a pacifist so its hard for her to get into the "fighting" scene when she becomes apart of the group magically, but once she realizes she's mainly there for defense and assist she warms up to the battles. she doesnt fidget very much, if she's waiting for an appointment or on someone, she'll simply pull out a book from her bag and start reading. if she doesnt have a book she'll start thinking of her schedule for the next week and planning everything in her planner, or maybe even just reading wiki articles on her phone or playing bejeweled on her phone lol

7. Does your oc collect anything? What about of knowledge or facts? How big is their collection?

ive never really thought about this before, but i can see her collecting plants. she's one of those people that cherishes them and names them, talks to them, takes amazing care of them and can bring a dead plant back to life. it brings her peace knowing she's surrounded by breathing life and it makes her feel a little less lonely. she'd definitely know a lot about lots of different species of flora and various plant life out there. her room is definitely filled to the brim with greenery haha

if its super bad out i can see her tanning a bit, but she never burns. mostly she's unaffected. her hijab rly helps keep her face cool haha

heather is 100% a pacifist as ive said previously, so she's generally the one always trying to keep the peace. she and csilla would be the ones avoiding personal conflict the most, but in battle csilla is more aggressive while heather is more docile and not willing to harm anyone because of her personal values and morals. she's a healer and the team shield, she's here to protect her friends and comrades. However, if it was for someone like elise, sinie, or daren, then heather would be more willing to face conflict head on. and honestly, the fact that she's a pacifist magical girl is such a fun concept to play with when you think about it because at some point, she's going to have to fight in some way. so finding the way she would "fight" is gonna be fun

heather is very docile and doesnt get angry often, however when she is she doesnt even need to tell you because all she needs to do is give you That Look. which is rly just a look of sadness and disappointment and u dont want that from heather. like personally, if heather ever told me she was disappointed in me i'd cry lmao

67. How many people does your oc prefer to be around? A crowd, a few friends, or all on their own?

heather is good in a crowd, but she does prefer to be around her own personal circle. her circle is definitely going to grow when csilla, agitha, urania, and eventually everett are added to the mix, which is something she's going to have to come to terms with that her personal circle is kind of a crowd. but she'll be content because its a crowd of people she cares about and fights for/with.

74. How would your oc act when drunk? What about when really, really tired?

oh man she'd be sooo lovey dovey with elise. texting elise like "where'd you go my love?" and elise is like babe im right next to you. heather has had way too much to drink but is always in when its time to take another shot. take a shot, choose ur chaser, kiss ur girlfriend. that is what heather would be like drunk haha

heather's laugh in my head sounds like a little melodic giggle. like...a soft hum or something. heather's voice is very soft and a little higher pitched, but her words are carried with grace and when she laughs its like a river. she laughs often too so its like music when she's around.

idk if this counts, but her hijab maybe? like its soo important to her by this point in her life, but its not rly so much of an object...so im rly not sure haha but i cant rly think of any family heirlooms at the moment!

Can superhero film series work?

This is not clickbait. At least, mostly not.

Overly Sarcastic Productions recently-ish released two videos about Superman. (The first is from July and is ~99 minutes long; the second is from Friday and is ~61 minutes long.) The second video is more relevant to this post; its thesis is, essentially, that superheroes need to rescue people instead of just fighting villains, a thesis I agree to with some caveats (not all of which were explicitly stated in the video, sadly).

A comment on that video got me to thinking about pacing and structure, and made me wonder whether superhero film series can work.

Now for the bit where I question whether my one-clause title was, in fact, clickbait.

Caveat #1: What's a superhero?

Not all "superheroes" need to fit in the model Red describes. Heroes in superhero media ranging from Dreadnought to Megamind to Hancock to One Punch Man to Worm are rarely seen rescuing people, and that works with how those sorts of stories conceptualize superheroes. But most superheroes aren't trying to be Worm, which is a good thing.

So for the purpose of this post, when I say "superhero" I mean "classic superheroes," who I categorize by that famed biologist's method. You'll see classic superheroes in the general memespace occupied by most big Marvel/DC heroes, The Incredibles, My Hero Academia('s main cast), Invincible*, Ben 10, Sentinels of the Multiverse, Spinnerette, that one terrible Disney movie most notable for a video essay about it, etc.

*Say what you will about Omni-Man, his son's trying to be Superman.

Caveat #2: What's a film series?

I'm focusing here on three related types of media—standalone movies, film series, and TV-style serials—because I think this problem only exists with one of them. (Which is, sadly, the dominant way superhero stories are being distributed these days.) For the purpose of this post:

Movies are single-installment narratives, generally 90-120 minutes in length, created without intending to follow them up with anything. The Incredibles are probably the clearest example, though plenty of pre-MCU superhero film trilogies started out this way. If I say "movie," I'm referring to standalone movies.

A film series is a bunch of movies meant to tie together, each with their own internal narrative, but also building into a larger narrative. Individual film series are released sporadically, months or years apart. By far the most obvious and successful example would be the MCU. For brevity, I'll use "film" to refer to this kind of film series.

A TV-style serial releases batches of much shorter episodes (usually 20-30 minutes each, sometimes 50-60 or some other length), sometimes all at once but more often weekly for a few months at a time. These batches are called "seasons," and usually last 10-15 or 20-30 episodes. Each episode has its own more or less self-contained plot, seasons usually have some kind of character and/or plot arc tying them together, and a series as a whole probably has something linking different seasons together beyond character names. This format was designed for TV, but these days lots of serials are produced for streaming platforms, and might not get any broadcast release. For brevity, I'm calling these "serials," even though that technically applies to film series and a bunch of other serial media.

TL;DR: The Incredibles is a movie, the MCU is films, Invincible is a serial.

I realize there's a lot of gray areas. The MCU includes a lot of serials in addition to the films, the DC universe has a bunch of loosely-linked animated movies, and I've mentioned more superhero stories with installments/versions in non-audiovisual mediums than ones which have only seen movies, films, and serials (as defined above).

But I'm not talking about all superhero stories, every way they can be structured, in every format. I'm talking about film series, and I'm using movies and serials as points of contrast.

Caveat #3: Let's not question OSP

To summarize OSP's thesis: Superheroes (as defined in caveat 1) need scenes where they save people from mundane peril to feel heroic. Superheroes are supposed to exist to save people, not just to fight villains.

If you disagree with these premises, if you think it's dumb for superpowered people to waste their time saving people from fires or industrial accidents or whatever, I'm not gonna argue. That's an argument about the philosophical nature of superheroism, which boils down to an argument over how "superhero" should be defined. I don't want to get involved in that kind of debate.

Instead: Starting with these caveats, let me get onto...

The Point

Story Structure

I'll be brief.

Stories have structure, and often recognizable structures. There are two big forces which drive stories to have the structures we recognize, or at least two I'll be discussing: The need for stories to tell a complete story, and time constraints.

Stories need to tell a complete story. The reason a lot of MCU knockoffs flopped as hard as they did is the amount of time they wasted on setups for future movies. MCU movies were reasonably restrained; each movie (or at least the movies I saw) did a pretty good job of telling a self-contained story, even as it built up to future movies. MCU knockoffs wanted to play catch-up, wanted to release their Avengers with as few introductory movies as possible.

But stories only have so much time to tell a story, and that time is very restricted in the mediums being analyzed here. Distributors don't really like movies and films more than 120-150 minutes long, because they either can't play as many times, require the theater to stay open longer, or both. And of course, serials have their episode lengths limited by broadcast schedules. In theory, streaming should give more runtime flexibility, but not many people have taken advantage of those possibilities so far.

In movies, the need to tell a complete story and the fairly strict runtime limitations have lead to a fairly strict structure known as the three-act formula; it's so ubiquitous that most films which try to avoid it end up reconstructing a form of the three-act structure, just to tell their whole story in one go.

Of course, films and serials operate on two different structural levels. Each film or episode needs to feel like a satisfying self-contained story, or at least a satisfying story fragment which went somewhere. An installment where it feels like nothing happened is often derisively called "padding" or "filler," because it is perceived to have added little to the series except runtime. You do not want your series to have filler if you can avoid it.

TL;DR: Every story, and every portion of a story released individually, needs to be structured in such a way that it tells its own story.

Where do we put the flood?

Consider the above point, and Caveat #3. Stories need to have structure, superheroes need to save people, and superhero stories only have so much time.

There's a well-established formula for movies. You put the disasters, petty crimes, and so forth late in act 1 or early in act 2, or maybe early in act 1 if your protagonist is an established superhero. This lets your hero earn their "superhero cred," and in the likely event that your protagonist isn't an established superhero, gives them a chance to establish themselves.

Movies don't need much. If you have around 100 minutes of movie, one 12-minute sequence where your hero discovers a burning building, finds people inside, and saves them is roughly an eighth of the movie. That's significant!

But that sequence won't cut it for a longer narrative. For a 12-episode serial with 22-minute episodes, the above sequence is less than 5% of the serial's runtime. Luckily, however, the serial structure makes it easy to work in multiple places where the superhero saves people, largely unrelated to the overarching seasonal plot.

You can have entire episodes focused on individual character conflicts, like the Hero and the Lancer having a pissing contest, or the Big Guy having a crisis of faith, or romantic bullshit, or whatever. At least some of these character-driven episodes should advance the overarching plot, but you can also have a couple which focus on more day-to-day heroism without losing too much—you just need the character conflict to go somewhere, and that can be the complete story you so desperately need.

Film series can't really do either.

The Problem with Superhero Film Series

Films are isolated in a way serial episodes aren't. It's easy to convince an audience to watch the first half of a two-part story if the second part is coming next week! It's hard to convince them to do the same if the parts are separated by a year. It worked for Infinity War/Endgame, but A. the end of Avengers: Infinity War was pretty definitive for a "part 1" and B. it's the culmination of a decade of genre-defining films.

And the year-long turnaround time is fairly short for film series. The MCU has been producing about three films per year, but I doubt anyone would argue that Avengers: Age of Ultron is the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy just because they're next to each other in Wikipedia's list of MCU films. The sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy is Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, which released ~2.5 years later. 2-3 years seems like the typical game between releases within MCU sub-series, and the DCEU seems to have a similar rhythm.

Anyways, whether one year or three, each film has immense pressure to tell the best self-contained story it can. (Assuming the studio heads are applying sensible pressures and not trying to do an Any% Cinematic Universe Speedrun.) That means it's easy to replace "filler" scenes where your hero stops a bank robbery or rescues people from a...volcano or something (I'm running out of natural disasters) with something relevant to the plot of this story.

From the perspective of the individual film, this is a good thing! Spending a full sequence on, essentially, just reminding the audience that Superman is a superhero is a waste of your limited time. At the very least, you should tie that rescue into the plot somehow; maybe the bank robbers have information on the Big Bad, or the volcano is part of their evil scheme. It would probably be less contrived if you just throw out the rescue angle entirely, though.

From the perspective of the film series, this is a disaster! The net effect is that superheroes in these film series only rescue people from non-supervillain-related situations when they still need to earn "superhero cred," generally when they're fresh and inexperienced. This is exactly what Red meant when she said heroes "graduate" from saving people to fighting villains. Saving people stops being the point of superheroism, and instead becomes its final exam.

Maybe I'm being pessimistic, but I don't see a solution within the "film series" model. As long as film series are big individual segments, with each segment being released months or years after the last, those segments need to stand on their own. As long as films are being optimized for their standalone quality, there'll be incentives to cut the ordinary rescues from most films. As long as such incentives are there, superheroes will focus on the spectacular supervillain brawls at the expense of heroism.

In Summary

Stories are shaped by their structure, structures are shaped by medium and release format. Superhero stories these days are often lacking in "mundane" heroics like stopping muggers, rescuing trapped miners, and destroying meteors before they hit the Earth. In film series like the All-Consuming MCU, the release format discourages writers from including those scenes.

I'm obviously not saying superheroes can't work, or even that superhero movies can't work. Heck, even "superhero" film series can work, if they're not trying to be classical superheroes. But the MCU (and most other big-budget superhero films) are trying to be classical superheroes, and because they're film series, they're discouraged from letting their superheroes be heroes.

Now, this problem isn't unique to superhero films. The Teen Titans (2003) were more likely to frame their character-development episodes around petty one-shot supervillains (or fighting, say, Plasmus again) than rescuing people from a natural disaster. But on a fundamental level, nothing about Teen Titans (2003) would need to change if they fought fire instead of Fang.

I'm not sure there's any such solution for film series, without structuring them more like standalone movies or TV serials.

Boy, do I have a story for you, Nonny ...

So, Elio and his wife Linda run Westeros.Org which, I believe, was the first fansite for ASoIaF - dedicated to keeping the lore. It was basically a Wiki for ASoIaF before Wiki was invented.

Eventually, GRRM was having trouble keeping all the lore straight in his head, so he basically hired Elio and Linda to keep track of it for him in the late-90's, I think. He would get somewhere in the book and he would call or e-mail them with a question and they'd look it up for him.

Eventually Westeros.Org became the unoffical site for the entire series. And ... Elio and Linda started acting more and more like not only gate keepers, but police, of the fandom, believing what they say and decree is law in fan spaces, and that anything outside of it is not true fandom. They were the judges of what was "Legitimate". Sort of like those "The Tolkien Society" cock-suckers for the Tolkien fandom.

When I joined the fandom in late 2009, they weren't very popular with fans of the books - pre-tv show. The place to be if you were a GRRM fan was the forums of Ice and Fire which was run by Elio & Linda and they constantly micro-managed and looked over the shoulders of everyone and everything going on there.

An example:

So someone starts a thread with a fan theory. It's outlandish but fun. People start adding to it, giving evidence, restructuring it so that it fit better. Then Elio or Linda - usually Linda - would come in and dump a big ice water bucket on everyone's fun, because, she thinks that the theory is ridiculous and not in the spirit of the series or the lore. People tell her that she's wrong and usually and successfully tell her to pound dirt - cause Linda couldn't debate worth shit.

That's when Elio comes along. Now, for context, go back to that Reddit post and read his response to the post they put up of my ask. Elio would find one inconstancy or mistake of lore in the theory and hyper focus on it. His stance being that because the people crafting the theory got one thing wrong that the entire thing was illegitimate. It didn't matter if everything else fit or that the people arguing with him was 99% right about every thing. He would take that one flaw and build an entire strawman argument around it while constantly claiming "Well, George said this!" Or "George told me this" ... shit that no one could quantify.

So, basically, the people on the theory thread was like "Whatever the fuck, dude, we're just having fun. Go away."

And that's when usually Linda locked or deleted the thread.

So, book readers started getting fucking tired of the teacher's pet, prefect, mentality of them.

However, when "Game of Thrones" started to hit big, they increased their standing as sort of the "Keepers of the Flame" of the fandom. Suddenly they were on podcasts and doing interviews for major publications. They also became gate keepers of knowledge for casual fans and new readers. Everyone fascinated with this Trans-Atlantic couple and their story about how they started off with this little fansite in the mid-late 90's and now were lore keepers for a world wide phenomenon!

Then, they flushed it all down the toilet.

So, around the time that "Game of Thrones" is hitting, fanfiction for the series is fucking everywhere. I think GOT fanfiction at one point over took "Harry Potter" in popularity. So, Linda writes an essay that gets picked by a publication basically saying that Fanfiction isn't just terrible for story telling, but that its basically fucking evil. I believe she refers to it as "Painting over the Mona Lisa" and is just really vitriolic toward all fanfiction writers in general. Of course, as everyone knows, GRRM hates fanfiction, especially fanfiction of his own characters.

There was a huge black lash to Linda's article/essay from not only fans but from other authors. Neil Gaiman then pens a counter/response to Linda's essay stating that not only is fanfiction important to Western Literature, but its is the very bedrock of human storytelling. That creation comes from imitation. And he defends fanfiction writers and their right to create new stories from the genius of other's creativity because that's what humans have always done.

Now, Elio and Linda look like douche bags in front of the entire world.

Then, the final nail in the coffin, comes when they race swapped Xaro Xhoan Daxos with Nonso Anozie - Which is a great character actor that I love in almost everything he's in. She basically condemned it, said that D&D were pissing on GRRM's legacy and she basically got catty with a bunch of blue haired wildebeests. And because she and Elio elevated themselves so highly in the public eye, they got cancelled before getting cancelled was a thing. They basically got labeled racists and got knocked off their pedestal.

Which is a shame, cause, in general, I agree with her about race swaps being inherently racist tokenism. But if they were gonna be cancelled, there is better shit to get them on than the usual leftist trash accusations.

So, GRRM, quietly, retired them from the spotlight - and public association. And by that point the fandom for ASoIaF/GOT was so massive that they couldn't control it, even if they wanted too. And they both kind of faded away.

However, recently, they tried to make a come back with "Rise of the Dragon" which was an art book that told an illustrated history of the "Conquest" and "Dance" that was supposed to tie into "House of the Dragon".

However, they were immediately met with hostility from everyone for either the Daxos incident, or their years of unpleasantness as gate keepers. Also, "Rise of the Dragon" was incredibly inconsistent and conflicting with "Fire & Blood" and the art for it was absolutely abysmal. It and them were panned endlessly. And there was no great rush to buy it and the book came and went with very little fanfare.

Now, my boy, Elio is patroling ASoIaf Reddit groups cause I'm guessing "A Forum of Ice and Fire" is pretty dead. And he's still trying to police the fandom, even now.

The lesson hear, Cats, is to have fun and a sense of humor with the stuff you like ... and don't be a fucking Percy prefect about fan stuff.
