s1 my beloved
transcript below the cut:
CASPAR: Anyway, this is Midnight Burger. I’m Caspar.
AVA (Outside): FUCK. YES.
CASPAR: That’s Ava, she’s always here.
AVA: (Outside) NICOTINE, GET IN ME.
CASPAR: And this is a... diner.
GLORIA: Are you sure?
--
CASPAR: The huge murder beast is having a coffee break
--
ZEBULON: For our marriage is made strong by a singular truth.
EFFIE: That divorce is an abomination.
ZEBULON: … And that we love each other very much.
EFFIE: Yes, also that.
--
THE EX: You can’t let that stand in the way of true love.
LEIF: Honey, you lay eggs.
THE EX: Why do you keep bringing that up?!
LEIF: It’s an important detail!
--
GLORIA: Do you ever feel like Leif is almost too relaxed? He goes with the flow no matter what, it’s weird.
AVA: Oh yeah? Watch this. Hey, Leif?
LEIF (In the kitchen): Yeah?
AVA: I’ve been thinking about it and, I don’t know, I still feel like a hot dog is a sandwich.
[POTS CRASHING.]
LEIF (In the kitchen): For fuck’s sake!
--
MARY: Can you help me?
CASPAR: What’s happening?
MARY: The officer outside, he’s been looking for me for days. I’ve managed to avoid him so far but now that’s him outside. Can you hide me somewhere? This desperate plea is brought to you by Arby’s. Arby’s, we have the meats.
---
LEIF: This Molotov Cocktail is brought to you by communism!
[BOTTLE SMASHING]
--
EFFIE: Yes, yes, of course. Our Lord is a God of peace.
ZEBULON: Indeed.
EFFIE: Unless you’re a merchant outside the temple, then look out for the chokehold of Jesus.
ZEBULON: Honey!
--
CASPAR: Ava, what are you doing?
AVA: I’m getting this jug of moonshine and going out in the parking lot to watch a fist fight. Suck on that, Stephen Hawking.
--
CASPAR: Oh, no. What are we going to do without all the essential work you do around here? Who will do the incredibly hard work of being an asshole to people?
AVA: That’s not work, that’s how I relax.
CASPAR: Well you must be really relaxed.
---
STEVE: We had come upon a binary star system. I looked upon these two stars rotating around their barycenter and my thoughts turned to my wife. We were like these two stars, locked into an eternal dance only due to chance and gravity, unable to recall a moment where we chose each other and unable to escape this rotation. Knowing that to move closer would obliterate us both.
CASPAR: This went from fun idea to Russian novel real fast.
--
STEVE: Hello, my friends. I am about to go on a date.
CASPAR: Yeah, we heard... uhhh nice work, buddy.
LEIF: Go get ‘em, tiger.
STEVE: I have no idea how to go on a date.
CASPAR: Oh.
LEIF: Shit, okay, uh...
CASPAR: Um... Ask her about her job.
LEIF: Yeah, her life in general.
CASPAR: Listen a lot.
LEIF: Don’t try and be funny.
CASPAR: Try sharing a secret with her.
LEIF: If she asks you to do something illegal, it may be a test.
CASPAR: What?
LEIF: Really gauge the situation at that point, is she kidding or does she actually want to do crimes?
CASPAR: What are you talking about?
LEIF: This is good advice.
CASPAR: Where, the Pirate Isle of Tortuga?
--
EFFIE: Caspar, thanks for being with us today.
CASPAR (Whispering): So great to be here, go fuck yourself.
--
CASPAR: Gloria, we’re going to have to go.
GLORIA: Oh, man. Okay. Guys, gather round.
[HEARTBREAKING MUSIC]
CASPAR: What the hell is that music?
[WOLVES WIMPERING]
GLORIA: V, Jungkook, Jimin, Suga, Jin, RM, J-Hope. I want you to know that I love you all very much. But I have my own pack, and I have to go run with them now.
EFFIE: (Fighting back tears) It’s... so hard to hear her say goodbye to the wolves.
ZEBULON (Also crying): I didn’t realize she named them after the members of BTS.
--
CASPAR: We should get one of those signs that says “This many days since an accident”.
LEIF: Yeah, except ours would say “This many days since your sentient radio quoted the Egyptian Book of the Dead, switched personalities, or steered you into a supermassive black hole.”
CASPAR: ...That’s way too long for a sign, Leif.
GLORIA: Yeah, Leif, that’s—
--
CASPAR: As a straight white male you know one thing about me: I’ve watched a lot of History Channel.
--
GLORIA: Okay, I’m thinking a chair, some rope, and I’ll pour hot coffee on her, let’s do some Guantanamo shit.
JANE (Overlapping): It’s no use, guys.
--
GLORIA: Did the doors to the diner just lock?
CASPAR: They did. Effie, what in the Amityville Horror is happening right now?
--
JANE: Does having you kidnapped maybe count as a romantic gesture at all?
--
CASPAR, narrating: In Ava’s defense, she was unilaterally putting everyone in danger... That doesn’t make it better, does it?
--
AVA: I am going to rip your balls off!
CASPAR: Oh, don’t threaten me with a good time.

DUMB IS A JOURNEY
You’re not going to transition from brainiac to himbotic overnight. It took work to fill your mind with what’s in there now. It will take time to drain that brain. You need to commit to this. Be motivated. You need to actively change things about yourself, your behaviour and your life. Change can be scary. As you change, people are going to treat you differently. Dumb people are laughed at. You’re the butt of every joke. You’ll be talked down to, marginalised, ignored. So what drives you to want to get more shallow, stupid and docile? Knowing your motivations will help you push through the doubt, embarrassment and hesitation. Write out “I want to be dumb, because…” 10 times. Then complete the sentences. 10 reasons. This is your motivation mantra. For some of you this will be about offering a Man a blank slate. For others, it will be about the relief of finally admitting you aren’t as smart as you pretend to be. Many just want to obey without thought or hesitation. Some might find the difference between an intelligent Dom and His dim-witted jock trophy the key to their dumbest desires. Knowing your motivation is important. Figure out why you want this. Why you need this.
ACTION POINT: Reply to this message with your 10 reasons. Read them to yourself while facing yourself in the mirror. Put a video or audio of you reading them aloud on your Tumblr. Share your motivation with the world.

Recap:
As the pack eats dinner, You can feel the heaviness from the stress of the day take a toll on you, causing your eyes to flutter. No matter the amount of training the lab or Eanses puts you through, when the body needs something it will either get it or break down.
And unfortunately for you, your eyes close.
And when they open, You see your target eye-to-eye with you.
Tumblr media
The sudden change in surroundings startles you as your eyes open to find yourself face-to-face with Min Yoongi. The realization hits you like a jolt of electricity, and a surge of panic courses through your veins. How did he find you? Did he sense your presence despite your efforts to remain hidden?
Your furry ears move a thousand miles a minute, searching for any audio clues. Your eyes search your surroundings, Only Min Yoongi is in the room. There is only one exit. Two if you count the window, but looking out the window, You are on the second floor. How did you even end up here? How did you not wake up while in transit?
Your eyes land back on Min Yoongi. His gaze on you intensifies. You can’t read his expression, His face is very blank. But as he is your target, the files that you’ve read about him, this was not surprising to you. As you focus back on Min Yoongi, his blank expression is disconcerting. Your training reminds you to stay composed, but the uncertainty of the circumstances tests your resolve.
For a moment, neither of you speaks. The air in the room hangs heavy with unspoken questions. Finally, Min Yoongi breaks the silence, his voice low and measured, "Who are you, and what are you doing here?" You think for a moment, whatever you say could lead to your demise. Whether by Min Yoongi’s hand or Eanses.
“I will not lie to you,” You start off, “I was sent here on a mission. But I am sure you were already aware of that. “He scoffs, “No shit.” You shrug, the shrug causing you to realize that you were tied down to the chair that you were sitting in. Min Yoongi smirks, “You’re tied.” Now you scoff, “No shit.” He rolls his eyes, “What the hell are you doing here? I haven’t done anything for the past five years. What the fuck do you want from me?” You sigh, looking down. Yes, you were trained to kill, But watching this pack for the past seven months has gotten you unfortunately attached to them.
“Sent to eliminate you.” You mutter out. As soon as you said that, Someone bursts through the door, “And you still want to be alone with her?” Alpha says, well more like yells.
The sudden intrusion startles both you and Min Yoongi. Alpha's commanding presence fills the room, and you can feel the tension escalate. Min Yoongi's expression shifts from annoyance to curiosity, and you're acutely aware of the precariousness of the situation.
Alpha's eyes narrow as he assesses the scene, taking in the tied-down figure before him. "Explain," he demands, his tone leaving no room for evasion.  You take a deep breath, considering your next words carefully.
"I was sent here to eliminate Min Yoongi," you repeat, meeting Alpha's gaze. The admission hangs in the air, and you brace yourself for their reactions.  Min Yoongi smirks again, seemingly unfazed by the revelation.
Alpha's eyes, however, narrow further, and the intensity of his gaze suggests that your presence poses a significant threat to the pack.  "You're tied because we can't afford to take chances," Alpha states, his voice firm. "Why should I believe anything you say?" Min Yoongi scoffs, “Why would she lie about that? Isn’t it obvious she’s telling the truth?”
Alpha's gaze shifts between you and Min Yoongi, considering the dynamics of the situation. The skepticism in his eyes persists, but Min Yoongi's endorsement of your truthfulness carries some weight. The atmosphere in the room remains charged with uncertainty.
"Truth or not, we can't ignore the fact that she's here to eliminate me," Min Yoongi says, his tone calm but with an underlying edge. "The question is, what do we do now?"
Alpha remains silent for a moment, contemplating the options. Finally, he issues a command, "Untie her, but keep a close eye on her. We need more answers before making any decisions." Min Yoongi bends down to untie your wrists, once letting them free you try to rub the marks away.
As you rub your wrists, Alpha warns, "Make a move, and you won't like the consequences. Now, start talking. Who sent you, and why are they after Yoongi?" You shrug, “Either way I am about to end up dead.” The two men’s gaze intensifies for a moment, “Look, we don’t care about what could or could not happen to you. We just want to know who fucking sent you.” Min Yoongi grumbles. You suppose that is fair, You are nothing to them. Looks like they have a lot in common with the humans from the lab.
You sigh, pulling down the collar of your shirt, to reveal the branding that Eanses gave you many years ago. The giant E that stretches across the skin of your neck cause your target to sharply inhale. The room falls silent as Min Yoongi and Alpha take in the sight of the branded "E" on your neck. Their expressions shift from suspicion to a mix of surprise and realization.
Min Yoongi's gaze narrows, and he demands, "Eanses? What's your connection to them?"
You take a moment to collect your thoughts, realizing that your mission has taken an unexpected turn. The dynamics of the situation have shifted, and you find yourself at a crossroads where the truth becomes your only ally. You tell the truth you die, you lie you die. There is no winning for you. Death is the only end deal here.
“I was created for Eanses.” You admit, your voice steady. “ They worked closely with a hybrid lab that tested on us. There was a group of us, I was the only one that lived, or well ‘passed the tests’.” You sigh, trying not to let the memories of the lab and the people make you crumble in front of your target and his pack, “Once Eanses got word of me passing, they took me. Trained to kill. Conditioned to follow commands without question. My official mission was to eliminate Min Yoongi and anyone in my way.”
Alpha and Min Yoongi exchange a glance, a silent communication passing between them. The room remains silent for a moment, the gravity of the situation palpable.  Alpha breaks the silence, his voice stern, "Why are you telling us this now? What changed?"  You meet Alpha's gaze, recognizing the need to explain your unexpected deviation from the mission. Your eyes widen, You have officially failed your mission.
“I… I’m not sure. Perhaps watching you all live so… freely? It’s quite a selfish thought of mine I suppose, But I knew there was no way I could fuck your lives up. Ending Min Yoongi’s life would most definitely fuck up the packmate’s lives. I was trained to not give a shit and yet I’m giving all of my shits for this random ass pack.” You angrily ramble, However you aren’t angry with the two men in front of you, no, you are angry with yourself.
The admission of your internal struggle echoes in the room, and your frustration with yourself is easily seen. The unexpected depth of your connection to the pack has thrown a wrench into the well-laid plans of Eanses. Alpha and Min Yoongi exchange another glance, this time with a hint of understanding.
Alpha's stern expression softens slightly as he observes your internal conflict. "You chose a different path," he states, his tone less accusatory and more contemplative. "We need time to consider the implications of your presence and the threat Eanses poses to us."
You nod, understanding the situation that the pack is in. However, You are unsure what this means for you though.
Min Yoongi, who has been mostly silent throughout, finally speaks, "If you're telling the truth, then your mission has obviously failed. And returning to Eanses would mean death. But trust is earned, not given. We'll be watching you closely, and with any sign of betrayal, I will kill you." You nod understanding.
Your frustration simmers as the weight of your actions sinks in. The pack's decision remains uncertain, and the reality of your failed mission looms heavily over you. “I’ll talk to the others. Explaining everything. I’ll see their reactions and then we will move on from there. You stay here with her. “
Alpha's command leaves you alone with Min Yoongi in the room, the air thick with tension. As you process the implications of your failed mission and the uncertain fate that awaits you, Min Yoongi studies you with a contemplative gaze.
The silence stretches, broken only by the distant sounds of the night. Min Yoongi finally speaks, his voice calm, "You've put yourself in quite a predicament. Trust is a rare thing here, it's not something easily earned."
You nod, acknowledging the truth in his words. The weight of your choices and the consequences they carry weigh heavily on your shoulders.
Min Yoongi leans back, crossing his arms, "You're not the only one with a troubled past. We all have our demons. What's your story, aside from being a tool for Eanses?"
As you contemplate how much to reveal, Min Yoongi's question forces you to confront your own history. The vulnerability in his eyes suggests a shared understanding of the complexities that shape a person.
“I don’t know what else to tell you really. I’ve already said all I needed to say.” You shrug. Min Yoongi studies you for a moment, his gaze searching for any signs of deception or hidden motives. The room remains quiet as he contemplates your words.
"You've said what you needed to say, but that doesn't mean your past is irrelevant," he replies, his voice measured. "If you want a chance with the pack, honesty is crucial. Tell me more about the lab, Eanses, and what they did to you."
You hesitate, considering how much to reveal. The vulnerability in Min Yoongi's eyes hints at a shared understanding of pain and struggle. Opening up might be a way to bridge the gap of distrust that currently separates you from the pack.
"Fine," you sigh, “The lab stole me. It was your typical hybrid lab, testing on hybrids Genetic manipulation, conditioning, and training, all that, I’m sure you’re aware. Eanses was already working with this particular lab, trying to create the perfect hitman. And if they were caught and killed oh well because they’re a hybrid. You know? There was a group of like fifteen people who were put through the testing and training for Eanses. They all died, but me. I was successful. Eanses took me as their perfect hitman. I’ve been doing missions since then. This is the only one I’ve failed.”
Min Yoongi listens attentively, and for a moment, there's a glimpse of empathy in his eyes. The bond between you and the pack may still be uncertain, but your willingness to reveal more about your painful past could be a step towards building understanding and trust.
Min Yoongi absorbs your words, and the weight of your history hangs in the air. The vulnerability you've shared opens a window into the dark chapters of your past, and the shared understanding of pain and struggle begins to bridge the gap between you and your target.
"I've had my fair share of struggles," Min Yoongi admits, his tone softer. "We all carry our demons, but it doesn't define who we are. The fact that you're here, willing to talk about it, suggests there's more to you than just being a tool for Eanses."
The acknowledgment of your shared struggles creates a subtle shift in the atmosphere. Min Yoongi's gaze reflects a mixture of empathy and contemplation, as if trying to decipher the complexities of you.
"What now?" he asks, breaking the momentary silence. "Even if the pack decides to let you stay, Eanses won't take kindly to your failure."
You look down, “Death is really my only option here. Sounds gruesome but I am nothing to them, just some spendable life.”
The conversation is interrupted by the door swinging open. It’s Alpha. “The pack wants to meet you.”

Why You Should Play Undertale Before Deltarune
youtube
New video! Fun Fact, I've had the idea for this video for way longer than my last two, but only finished it recently! Which is probably a good thing, bc the 'conclusion' I have at the end is different than It probably would've been (and also I probably wouldn't have my cute jackalope sona :3). The ending is kinda abrupt lol but I still think it turned out pretty good! Also, finally figuring out the basics of like image and audio transitions, though I'll probably still keep this pretty basic.

Miguel O'Hara
tags ! mafia au, shit talking Taco Bell
WC.975
Barbie's Note... Sooooo, we're not going to talk about how I went afk for like so long, and I'm not going to give y'all some wild Wattpad Author story. I'm just gonna drop this on yall and if yall want more, give it some love please bc ngl I have shit planned for this🙏
For once in his 13 years of running his father's mafia, is he glad to be running it. Yes, it’s pretty depressing to be doing something you don’t like for so long, but he knew what he was getting into the moment his father asked if he wanted to take over. Or more so told him he’d be taking over. Otherwise, the business would have been given to his half-brother Gabriel O’Hara and that was just a no in his father’s eyes. So Miguel had to throw away his aspirations of being an astronaut and take one for the team. But why bitch about it now when things are finally getting good and interesting?
He dims the lights in his study before logging into his computer. For a solid eight minutes and counting, he’s just clicking around, looking for the application that allows him access to his employee’s body cams. He’s on the verge of summoning his virtual assistant Lyla to explain something she already explained (which she loves to tease him for and he hates) when he eventually remembers that it’s not accessible on his homepage but through a locked website she whipped up. With his technical difficulties out of the way, he clicks on the ‘Miles Morales Body Cam’ link to see the advancement of their mission. Much to his disapproval, it looks like his team has made zero progress because they stopped by Taco Bell for simple, bland, and disgusting cheesy bean burritos that would have tasted better homemade with nacho fries and watered-down Baja Blast slushies. An absolutely overpriced and gut-wrenching meal made by, in his opinion, the worst fast food place in all of Nueva York. The site doesn’t make him as mad as it should, in fact, it only ruins his mood by ten percent.
He leans back in his Pu leather office chair, wristwatch coming to his lips as he converses with his virtual assistant. “Lyla, I’m sure you’re seeing what I’m seeing. Tell them to get to it.” He orders, his voice low and calm, but not without base to show that he’s serious. “Already on it!” The hologram says back, her voice chipper but adult-like, almost a complete contrast compared to Miguel.
The message is relayed, and he watches patiently as the group transitions from munching on mediocre slapped-together burritos to bagging up everything in sight the moment Lyla’s holographic form appears on Hobie’s wristwatch. “Hey, y’all! Hahaha, no need to be so scared, it’s only me.” They all sigh, “And Miguel…” They tense up again, “Yeah, he can see everything you’re doing right now, and let’s just say he is not too pleased. So can we maybe stop whatever this lunch date is and get on with the mission? Please and thank you. Oh yeah, and if you guys are going to do some sneaky stuff at least turn off your body cams. How else do you think he found out?” Lyla then disappears before static engulfs his screen once they figure out it’s Miles who forgot to turn his body cam off.
Miguel sits tired and unamused at his computer for what seems like forever until all four of the group’s body cams switch on and they’re trying to figure out a way into someone's house. Five valuable minutes fly by and they still haven’t found an open window, unlit chimney, or semi-clean crawl space. Only then does he realize the glowing red flashing icon on the bottom of Gwen’s frame, signaling that there is noise coming from her mic. He reaches into his locked desk for his recently charged earpiece and pushes it into his ear.
An audio chatline with Gwen Stacey/ Miguel O’Hara has been opened. It recites on both lines.
“Ah! Finally, you answered. Anyway, we’re having a bit of trouble finding a way in.” She voices out of breath, hands on the top of her head to up the intake of oxygen in her lungs. Miguel takes a fair look at their situation from all the cameras until brewing a solution and shares the private audio chat line with everyone else. “Make one.” Movement from all four cameras stops, mostly in confusion but some in exhaustion. “Make a way in.” He elaborates, “I didn’t send the youngest of team nine on a mission for shits and giggles. I know you guys can get creative with the tools in the trunk. That’s what they’re there for.” Seeming more like a pep talk than an order, they get to work with a crowbar, plunger, some flat-head screwdrivers, and a better attitude.
Miles and Pavitr give Gwen a leg up to a second-story window with Hobie standing a couple of feet behind in case she falls. “Screwdriver.” She says, her hand coming off of the window and down to retrieve her item. She begins wedging the flat head of the utensil under the bottom and wiggling it in. The window comes up easier than she expected until she realizes, it’s unlocked, but not pushed up far enough for her fingers to fit. She hands back the screwdriver and asks for the plunger, only then does she successfully get the window open after sticking it to the glass and pushing it up.
“Good, now-” Miguel starts but is abruptly stopped by the very familiar sound of metal clanking together, catching the attention of everyone.
The camera pans up when Gwen looks to where the noise is coming from, only to be met with the barrel of a gun pointed between her eyes held by one of the prettiest women she’s seen in her lifetime. (Even if that isn’t very long.) Everyone freezes in hopes that the woman doesn’t have a trigger-happy trigger finger otherwise, this might be the last time they see Gwen. She spits out,
“Who the fuck are you?”

“Sono Saki e” Promotion
Wakana visited the Tower Recrods Shibuya store to promote her newly released album! Tweet 1 | Tweet 2
Digital Album (Purchase/Stream): https://jvcmusic.lnk.to/wakana_sonosakie
Oricon Entry Position
“Sono Saki e” made it to #14 on its first day in the Daily Oricon Charts. That’s honestly lower than I expected, really not the best entry position (especially compared to Keiko who managed to reach #8 on the first day). This doesn’t bode well for the overall performance.

Interview with Real Sound
Source: https://realsound.jp/2023/05/post-1338130.html
We get another longer interview with some interesting insight regarding “Sono Saki e”. Here are some of the highlights┗(•ˇ_ˇ•)―→
With this album, Wakana wants to provide solace for people who are in a dark place right now. Music should always bring light into your world.
Both “Asu wo Yume Mite Utau” as well as “Flag” contain the image of looking towards the future and hoping for a brighter tomorrow. Even though those songs were written long before her and Takebe came up with the final album concept, they fit perfectly into it.
The album contains a transition between a strong sense of loneliness and slowly gaining hope, realising that you are not alone.
It was actually Takebe who suggested to add some darker elements to “Butterfly Dream”. It turned into a dark fantasy. Hidden withing the cute melody, there’s a muddy desire to possess something that is important to you. The point of view is quite delusional, borderline crazy
Wakana loves the “folk” and rock-ish sound of “Rapa Nui” and she had a blast singing in the language of Easter Island even though she wasn’t really sure how to pronounce most of the words. She tried to listen to more recent recordings of the language but it was still difficult to figure out the best way to sing those lines. The song is about facing your own weaknesses. It’s not always a bad thing to be by yourself. You can find strength in being alone.
“Shirushi” has a strong message of knowing that you always have someone by your side even if they are not physically there with you. Your very existence is proof that someone else has been there and touched your life. Just this thought can be reassurance enough.
“Kibou” and “Kara” are both about finding light and hope within a dark world. You can be sure that the sun will rise again no matter what.
Wakana would like us to compare “Tsubasa” and “Kara” since “Kara” is pretty much a sequel. It tell a story of how time has passed between those two songs. She talked with the lyricist about being afraid to trust people. The song is about having been betrayed and hurt in the past which makes you want to hide away and not interact with people anymore. You start to feel like you are completely alone but there comes a time when you realise that no, you are not in fact alone. You always have your friends and family by your side. With their support you have the strength to move forward.
“KEMONO” is about not being afraid to be different in today’s world and to live your truth with pride. Wakana enjoys the jazzy feel of the piano, she thinks her singing and the piano playing almost sounds like an elaborate game of ping-pong.
“Sono Saki e” actually has the same message as “Ato Hitotsu”, just a little more profound. Finding joy in the small things in our daily lives

OH BOY MUSIC PROCESS RAMBLES
Sorry for the long post, music making is one of those topics I ramble about a lot.
We can post multiple audio files now. Thought it might be fun to ramble about some of my process and show some clips of how different (and cursed) my music can sound when it's early in production, cause I do save samples along the way sometimes as sound tests. They then become relics and examples of why the first choices aren't always the best, but also that some ideas were worth keeping. My early production clips can actually sound really rough, fair warning, but I like looking back on them because they're still the beginnings of what eventually became a finished piece that sounds way better.
Shitty audio balancing/EQ ahead by the way, I generally don't balance my audio until I start getting to a stage where I have to start polishing my sound. That's kinda the standard for most composers though, I think. I don't know. I'm not formally trained and have no idea what I'm doing half the time.
Here's two super early versions of Ad Sidera Caeli (the Sableheart theme). You can tell this is the phase where I had the ideas, but I wasn't sure how to arrange them yet, and I wasn't entirely certain in the musical direction. I eventually fully decided I wanted the Sableheart music style to take a more symphonic rock direction, and dialed back some of the electronic sounds- though they are still present and part of the style, they're more subtle now. Other Sableheart tracks could be more electronic, but a lot of it didn't feel right for the main theme.
Here's two clips of an early version of Ex Tenebris (Arctos's theme) with some sounds I ended up not keeping. It was too dramatic for points that early in the song and I wanted to save those swelling sounds for peak moments in the track. It also has some melody differences near the end that I ended up changing. This was also before, again, I decided to dial back some of the electronic sounds and let them be in the background. Some of the pacing and transitions were off too. This track is also sort of a redo of his original theme, and you can hear that I was still coming out of some of the old sounds. Also, the early version of the track had too much energy for too long, so I ended up adding more "breaks" in the final track for the music to breathe. The early versions of this track were overwhelming for how few calm moments they had and it felt necessary.
(I still love the little descending note part near the beginning of the second clip that I ended up keeping in the final track. It's so simple but I feel like it tied that section up in a neat little bow. The final part of the finished track is one of my favorite sections I've composed in general.)
Here's a random bonus sound test where I just fucked around. I was mostly doing it to figure out some sounds and warm up. Maybe I'll pick pieces off of this one's corpse for future tracks though.
(Tumblr won't let me upload more, but that's okay. Five audio tracks in a post is a lot, and I guess that's the limit!)

For those who were confused by The Sandman: A Game of you
I recently found out some people got confused by the storyline of A Game of you so I’ll write it out, simplified here.
Barbie is the character who had been ironically married to a guy named Ken in The Doll's House. She’s divorced from him now.  Now she's living in a boarding house with a lesbian couple (Hazel and Foxglove AKA Donna), Larissa AKA Thessaly (secretly an immortal witch), and Wanda (a trans woman).
Barbie used to have a fantasy world she'd escape to called "The Land."  It's a bit like Wonderland, or Oz or The Labyrinth from Jim Henson's The Labyrinth if you're familiar with any of those. A "villain" named The Cuckoo has taken over this fantasy land.   One of Barbie’s friends from The Land, Martin Tenbones (A large, furry creature), comes to The Waking World to try to find Barbie. He hasn’t seen her in a long time and he wants to deliver her the Porpentine (actually the rose quartz dreamstone).  This jewel allows the wearer to control The Land, much like how Morpheus controls the majority of The Dreaming.
*This part is only revealed in The Sandman: Overture.  A long, long time ago Some Old Gods tried to take over The Dreaming and chained Morpheus in his own dungeon.  Morpheus called out to each of his siblings one at a time for help.  One by one they refused as they were much prouder and meaner back then. Delight was in the middle of “changing” into Delirium so she couldn’t help.  Finally Morpheus was forced to call on Desire who sent him a lover, Alianora.  Alianora had helped free Morpheus and kill The Old Ones.  From their bones Morpheus made his helm.  Over time Morpheus and Alianora fell out of love and Alianora had no where else to go so Morpheus gave her a skerry (a small island) out in the distant part of The Dreaming.  He also gave her the rose quartz dreamstone so she could govern it.*
Now it’s many centuries later and lots of women have used this Skerry as their fantasy land.       Martin Tenbones unfortunately gets killed just as he finds Barbie.
George (who also lived in the same building as Barbie, Hazel and Donna AKA Foxglove, Larissa AKA Thessaly, and Wanda) turns out to be a minion of the cuckoo and is not quite human anymore (if he ever truly was).  He sends terrible nightmares to all of the women to prey on their insecurities. For Hazel it’s because she’s pregnant from a one night stand and she doesn’t know how to tell Foxglove (Donna).  For Wanda the dream is about being forced to surgically transition because she’s not being accepted as a woman (the audio drama changes it to just fear of surgery, period).
Barbie is in some sort of coma.
Thessaly (being secretly a two-thousand-year-old witch) figures out that George isn’t what he seems and that he is causing their nightmares.  So she kills him, cuts off his face and nails it to the wall... as you do...   She then calls his soul back to the face to force him to tell them who he’s working for and why.
The group decide to rescue Barbie and use forbidden magick to open a way to physically enter The Dreaming- something you’re not supposed to be able to do.  In the original comic Thessaly claimed the Goddess of the moon would not accept Wanda because shes not a “Real” woman.  Some readers mistook this as fact, that it was Neil saying Wanda isn’t a real woman. In reality this was just Thessaly being what we’d today call a TERF. Remember, she’s really a very old woman and a bit of a bitch.
The thing about the moon not accepting Wanda is NOT in The Sandman audio drama at all.  In that version Wanda stays behind to watch Barbie because someone needs to guard her. Foxglove finds out about Hazel's pregnancy and the two decide to raise the baby together.
After Hazel, Foxglove, and Thessaly enter The Dreaming, a terrible storm hits the boarding house where they lived. Wanda sees a homeless woman who is mentally unwell (she has a serious fear of dogs) and who had previously been rude to Wanda.  But Wanda rescues her from the storm anyway and dies trying to save her.
Meanwhile in The Land The Cuckoo wants to make Barbie destroy the porpentine (dreamstone) because The Cuckoo accidentally got trapped in Baribe’s fantasy world as her villain.  She (the Cuckoo) cannot leave it until the stone is destroyed.  The Cuckoo spends most of the story in the form of Barbie as a little girl.   It should be noted that the characters in The Land refer to their God as "Murphy." This, of course, is actually Morpheus, but over several thousand years his name got distorted in The Land / The Skerry (island).
One of Barbie’s anthropomorphic muppet-like animal friends (a bird creature) betrays her other animal friends and even pretends to be the Cuckoo to slow down Barbie’s friends. The bird was in The Cuckoo’s thrall. Thessaly kills the bird.
Barbie does, indeed, destroy the dreamstone while under the influence of The Cuckoo.  This gets Morpheus’s attention.  Morpheus arrives and draws all the characters and settings of The Land back into himself and (though Thessaly REALLY wanted to kill the Cuckoo for what she did) Morpheus tells Thessaly to let her go.  The Cuckoo takes off and flies away.
While uncreating The Land Morpheus meets up with Alianora and they have a friendly conversation.  She may or may not be a ghost, it’s hard to tell.  But he clearly still has some feelings for her and calls her ”Old Love.”
Morpheus scolds Barbie’s human friends for entering The Dreaming unnaturally (physically) and implies he’ll leave them there forever but at the same time he tells Barbie that he owes her a boon. He is pretty much heavily hinting that she should use the boon to save her friends, which, of course she does.
One by one everyone wakes up / returns to The Waking World however behind the scenes Morpheus and Thessaly become lovers.
Barbie attends Wanda’s funeral where Wanda’s bigot family misgender her and deadname her the whole time, including on her tombstone and sadly this still happens with a lot of trans kids.  Barbie places a Weirdso comic on Wanda’s grave.  Weirdso (a stand-in for Bizzaro) was Wanda’s favorite character.  She also writes Wanda’s true name on the headstone in her favorite lipstick.
While dreaming Barbie is visited by Death and Wanda. Wanda is in a pretty dress and finally has the feminine features she always wanted, proving she was always and truly is a woman all along and that the bigots have always been wrong.
And that’s pretty much it.

The Story
This film contains 9 skits surrounded by Fritz getting a welfare check.
Unlike the skits from the previous film, these skits act smart, but they really aren't. They don't have the witty dialogue that the previous film had talking about the 60s. Instead, we have Fritz talking to these other animals that are not interesting or have anything meaningful to say. Making the entire film experience boring.
The humour of this film is terrible, the humour is so bad that the film decided to add burping and farting sound effects everywhere for no apparent reason.
The Characters
Do you remember the Fritz who used to take things too far, but had a caring heart. Well, the Fritz in this film is a bum who doesn't help raise his family, cheats on his wife and is a jerk to everyone.
Yes, the Fritz in the previous film wasn't perfect, but that's what made him so interesting and great to follow throughout the whole film. But this guy you just want to punch in the face! He is so obnoxious!
We know nothing else about the side characters because they are not consistent with which animal represents which group of people. Other than the crows, the creators of this film decided to throw in as many animals in as possible without thinking about how it would effect the rest of the film.
The Animation/Special Effects
The animation has definitely improved from the previous film, but it recycles more footage than the previous film did and the backgrounds are now hand drawn, which makes the film feel too cartoony compared to the gritty original.
Some of the animals I can't for the life of me figure out what animal they are. There's a character with a cross necklace at the beginning of the film who for the life of me I cannot figure what he is supposed to be. Is he a camel, weasel, an escaped experiment from Bagi: Monster of Mighty Nature? I don't know! And don't get me started on God (yes, he is in this film, unfortunately for him)!
One thing I can say that is good about this film is that the transitions between each skit is far better handled in this film and the audio quality is far superior compared to the original. Too bad the characters in this film talk nothing but bullshit throughout this entire film and it's the same animation we see in each transition change.
Final Thoughts
Overall, this film is really bad. The stories are boring, the characters are given no personality, and while the audio quality has improved, the animation is recycled beyond all reason and the characters just talk bull.
If you have seen the first one and enjoyed that film, don't for gods sake watch this film! And those who disliked the previous film, why are you dumb enough to read this review when you didn't like the first one?

That Moment of Silence Between
Tumblr media
Okay. I have decided to cancel my "True Confessions" series. That's my decision and there's not a rulebook by which anyone can call a penalty on that. I will tell you, however, that I still read the newspaper every morning. Yep, the real newspaper. Based on your age, world perspective, feelings about 5AM technology, etc.--you may be asking "What's a newspaper?" or "They still do that?" Yes, they do! I cannot even wake up early enough to see the paper-boy on his bicycle toss it over the Hell Bitch (that is still not quite fitting in the garage) and onto my sidewalk. But between 5:35 and 5:40AM every morning, I creep out my front door, pick up the paper, and scamper back into the house before joggers see me and my morning-hair.
I read all the paper. By "read" I mean that I generally parse headlines until I get to the comics. Then in the comics, there's this weird one I've started to read this year: "Judge Parker." In case you don't know--this is one of those "boring comics" that I'd never read until one day I did and never stopped. Judge Parker was a widower and a judget with two children, Randy and Ann. Later, Judge Parker married a younger woman, Kate. Initially he was a dashing figure who solved crimes and chased criminals, he kind of turned into a dull and serious judge who rarely strayed from his courtroom--and the strip began to transition away from the Judge and over to Sam Driver, a young attorney. I mean. I don't even know how Sam relates to Judge Parker. I couldn't tell you who Judge Parker was anymore. But anyway, there's a lot of drama. And today, Sam and Abbey are split up, their world is torn asunder and Abby says the above:
"...exist in that moment of silence between what was and what will be."
Silly Judge Parker. But not so silly today. What Abby said stuck with me as she described that place. That place between what was and what will be.
THAT PLACE BETWEEN WHAT IS AND WHAT WILL BE.
Tumblr media
Okay--now I'm switching over to Top Gun: Maverick for a few minutes. Too close for missles, so I'm switching to guns. Ha ha. Mayday, mayday, Mav's in trouble, he's in a flat spin, he's headed out to sea. That's what Iceman said into the radio when Mav's F-14 flew right through Ice's jetwash. And the thing is, it was just a freak accident. But Mav's RIO (radar intercept officer) Goose hit his head on the canopy when ejecting, and the rest, as they say, is history.
So. Top Gun. Yeah. Remember how I'm sure I said something about how my parents never let me see any movies growing up? Top Gun was different. I was 12. My little brother was 8. My dad had been in the Navy. Not sure of all the backstory, but my dad took my brother and I to the Los Alatos movie theatre in Albuquerque to see Top Gun. I mean. Wow. WOW. That open scene and where the Top Gun anthem and all the jets and the fog and how it explodes into Kenny Loggins' DANGER ZONE. WOW. I'd gone to 12-year old heaven. But then when the profanity started flying and the TAKE MY BREATH AWAY SO MUCH TONGUE--I was suer that I was going to full time hell, and kept glancing over at my dad to notice him totally geeking out over the NAVY JETS, and then checked over at my brother to make sure his head was on fire, I settled in and Top Gun became my thing. I eventually bought it on VHS and made an audio recording of it on cassette for my Walkman. While other kids were playing real music, I was jamming out to just listening to the audio of Top Gun. I had the whole thing memorized. I was going to be a Naval Aviator. I don't know. Then when I was 13 we moved from Albuquerque to Texas.
Anyway. When I heard that Top Gun: Maverick was coming out way back in 2019 for summer 2020--I made plans with my dad (and brother) to go and see the sequel. How amazing and lucky it was/is to get that chance. But then COVID delay 1. Then COVID delay 2. Then FINALLY in May 2022, it happened. We saw it together, all the families were there. The genius innovation of reserved seats made the same row possible. Left work early. Met everyone there. Finally. And it was truly as good and actually much better than I'd thought possible. I sat until the very last second of the credits. No one else was left in that place. Went out to the lobby, hugged my brother and dad. It was a moment, truly. Sometimes you win, 36 years later. Lucky, blessed, charmed, whatever--it was a moment.
I'd see it as many more times as I can without being too weird and I guess soon it'll be streaming. But that's not why I bring it up. I bring it up because a cool thing happened--in July, I had to do something called The Predictive Index thing with HR. The Predictive Index is one of those new tools that help give you insight into yourself as a HUMAN, as an EMPLOYEE, and as a MANAGER or TEAM MEMBER. I'm in the process of doing this myself--but then also asking my team to do it so I can just be better. Hey, any insight is good insight? I guess? But when insight isn't good, maybe it can just be GREAT! I took this tool--which you fill out to measure your cognitive abilities, personality traits, and behavioral tendancies--and it said that I am a:
Tumblr media
Right? Maybe this is the perfect tool. Or maybe I am. Whatever.
Tumblr media
I'm not quite sure yet whether or not this is just kind of like a horoscope yet, because I haven't looked at what other people might be. But LOOK--the tool said I AM MAVERICK, and kind of hit the nail on the head with a few things. Even a jet, the F14 original Top Gun style and not the new F18 style--so maybe that is because I am an OLD Maverick. We'll see.
Tumblr media
Maybe you probably won't be lucky enough to ever manage me, or manage anything for that matter, maybe you're a full-manager, maybe you're a freaking manager of managers, all you do is manage until you're blue in the face, but you should totaly take your PI and see if it somehow relates to your favorite movie or life or when you were 12.
Right now my favorite part of Top Gun: Maverick has to do with the character of Phoenix (pictured below). She is a badass and in one scene she has my favorite line of the whole movie. SPOILER ALERT--it happens when essentially Maverick has to STEAL A JET because he's just been fired so that he can prove to his mean John Hamm Admiral Boss that he is the best of the best and it really can be done--well he STEALS A JET and proves that miracles can happen--while he is doing it, right before he does it, they cut to Phoenix who says in the coolest voice ever, "Nice."
Tumblr media
That's my point.
There's what happens in that moment between what has happened and what will happen. Sometimes I feel like I'm stuck right there where anything is possible. Like the Lottery. Like when the missle that's going to blow your jet smithereens is fired and when it hits. Like the space between jump and gravity and impact--or flight. Like that little blink between laughter and tears. There's that moment.
"Nice."
Worth the price of admission, even 36 years later.

Audiovision Blog Post week 7
1. Research (technical, academic, creative practice)
My technical research this week was understanding how to implement audio into a 360 degree environment. As Ableton is my DAW of choice I began researching on ableton specific implementation and found 'Envelop tools for Live'. This is a Ableton specific set of plugins and devices through the 'max4live' system that allow better integration between 360 video and audio.
As general panning options offer limited variation, these plugins allow for a wide range of 360 panning parameters that let you map sounds to where you want them to be in the environment.
Hong Kong-based independent creative publication, media company and brand 'Maekan' has developed and curated a 'soundwalk' page on their website. Their series 'Sounds of' takes the listener on a journey throughout Hong Kong using sonic spatial audio paired with still images to help contextualize the space. As I want the environment I create to be as authentic as possible, this page was great inspiration towards the variety of sounds and elements that I want to use. As I was previously going directly based off of what I was seeing in the animatic, this made my overall mix quite dull and flat.
From this video, specifically the one within a Hong Kong city building, I quickly built a list of various sounds that I will layer into the backing environment.
I began adding various sounds such as street traffic, construction work, and even chatter below the building and in neighbouring houses. This has resulted in instantly improving the overall immersion and authenticity of the videos envorinment and space.

2. Reflection
The talk about time management and working effectively made it clear that my current study regimen is quite ineffective regarding productivity. I have always been bad at time management and organisation when it comes to the optimisation of my workload as I always leave everything until the last minute. I wanted to make a change to how I work as I know in the future, this will not work out in an industry position. In the coming weeks I will aim to incorporate aspects of the chunking and Pomodoro techniques by planning and setting out clear goals and milestones to reach in my production. This will ultimately result in improved motivation and discipline in my work, as well as a higher quality of work as I have time to step away and reflect on my decisions.
I will also take into account some of the collaborative tips, such as working out exactly what they want and work out what you are prepared to do. By doing this it allows for better clarity of objectives, as well as set expectations of work quality and delivery. In the past I have not asked these simple questions, leading to partners completing their work incorrectly or to a lower standard.
Finally I will use some of the various study 'hacks'. These include the use of useful research tools Research Rabbit, Chat PDF and Endnote. I tend to find the research portion of my work to be unmotivating and tedious due to the amount of vague information and repeated content in general web pages and readings. By incorporating these tools I will better my referencing skills, along with find more interesting work to research and better my work through. On top of this I will also begin planning my work better as I generally just go with the flow and try and figure everything out as I go, generally leading to roadblocks and unseen troubles that decrease motivation.
3. Progress
As I am still waiting on a new animatic to be completed I am still yet to begin recording any of my sounds. I have been tirelessly working on one of my other classes big projects this week, so I spent most of my time layering and deepening the environment. I want to make my sound design quite unique inspiring wonder and intrigue so I have begun devising some interesting ways of transitioning audio and mood.
Within the second half of the video, there is a transition from a flashback scene into the present. The mood is quite joyful and nostalgic, but jumps back with the mood changing back to sorrowful and depressing. I have used the music playing in the scene as a motif that is connected with the past memories of the grandpa. This music then fades and worsens in quality as he regains consciousness. The music that shifts into a bad radio quality playback in one of the neighbouring rooms. This technique is similar to the one used in the monsters Inc short animation however in reverse. The non diegetic main track then becomes diegetic noise in the background as the new score for the sad scene enters.
I have also been experimenting with a range of automation and modulation to the audio. I want to use sonic symbolism to illustrate to the audience a more realistic experience. I have started adding subtle details like slight muffling to audio beyond a certain distance, as well as white noise and low cutting high frequencies. This is done to reflect possible illness symptoms that arise around that age.
These problems will be resolved when in the flashback sequences to make it clearer to the audience the direct time shift into the past.
Current version of the video:
youtube
The only real problem I am currently having with this project is my own personal time management as I have always been bad at maintaining a steady and healthy study schedule. Following this week I will aim to progress at a more steady rate as I usually leave everything until the last minute. By incorporating some of the tips from mondays lecture I will hopefully be able to be more consistent and therefore effective in the future.

distortion affects
just various effects i've done and how !
Tumblr media
Layering 4 clips at varying speeds, with divide, hard mix and difference blending modes.
cutting the footage to match with when sound appears
duplicating audio and video to create a glitching / tape stuck effect
duplicating video on darken blending mode to create a time delay effect
Tumblr media
stacking clips above eachother
using cuts and strobe at an expenentially increasing rate, I like the sense of rhythm / speed this creates
using one clip and changing the speed of the clip continuously
stacking clips against their reversed selves for a morphing effect
using after effects to interpolate frames
Tumblr media
mosaic effect
Tumblr media
flashing ai-recognition-esque boxes and labels
Tumblr media
using default "bad" transition effects in quick succession
Tumblr media
blinders transition effect
Tumblr media
blur effect
Tumblr media
inverted
and more i couldn't really name. The whole process just involves me fucking around. I am however paying attention to execute the distortion in a way where it is entirely focussed on the image itself rather than taking attention away from it. For all distortion to be based on the poor image and its material qualities - the speed of its movement, the jitter of the bad animation. Also having in mind of the distortion increasing parallel to the deterioration of the audio.
About 2:30 minutes in now!
Also figured out that the final installation (next tuesday) will be in the assembly hall. I'm happy about the space as it's about as big and grand as you can get. THANKS HARRY!

Finding your feet in the internship: induction, and completing initial tasks.
Tumblr media
At Sports Entertainment Network, my initial role was as a digital content and video assistant. These roles stemmed from anything editing in video, but I also had the opportunity to complete other tasks such as writing articles. In my first few shifts, I was taught the task of clipping up radio segments and discussions into shorter videos for sharing on all social media platforms. For example, I would get in at 9am and go through the SEN Breakfast producer notes and clip up any important conversations that I believed were of note and cut them into short 2min clips.
At first, I had to learn the editing procedure that was required, and with the help of Jack I was able to get a hold of it fairly quickly. Most of the tools and ways in which they wanted it to be done was already set up in Premiere Pro, so all I had to do was drag in the vision and audio and find the in and out points of the conversation. The next step was to do it as quickly as possible, so the number of clips that could be posted was increased and able to be scheduled throughout the day. My biggest learning curve with that task was actually determining what was a comment or conversation worth clipping up. Over the period of a 3 hour show for instance, there is a lot of things that say Kane Cornes or Nathan Buckley would talk about, and figuring out the best things to clip that would likely get a lot of traction on social media was what I needed to figure out.
I was also asked to broaden my skillset and have a go at writing a small piece for publishing on their website. This is something that I know I can always improve, as I haven’t practiced it as much as my editing skills over the years. I gave it a go and wrote a small article about a contentious decision in a match from the previous night between Collingwood and Geelong. Knowing it was about Collingwood and Brayden Maynard, it gained quite a lot of traction on socials, and it was cool to see something I wrote about be so topical with the fans. This was a good experience for me to further my writing skills for the future.
At Tennis Victoria, my initial task was to take over the videoing and editing of their weekly State Grade Show. As Steph – who was previously responsible – was going on leave, it was a great opportunity for me to step right in to the deep end and put my current skills into practice. Every Tuesday we would go find a location for filming, then I would come back and edit the final product for it to be posted later that day. It was fun learning and experiencing what was close to a full producer type role.
This wouldn't have been possible without the preparation that was given to us by Holmesglen before the internships took place. The unit "Transition into Professional Practice" taught by Sharon was greatly beneficial to me and all students. "Students and supervisors would benefit from more formal preparation or training prior to the start of an internship." (Zehr and Korte, 2020).

Follow up post
This is a follow-up post aiming to mention some additional information regarding the key steps that were taken during the production stage.
It was during our feedback session on Wednesday the 31st of January that we presented our final idea to Ian and Neil. We had previously explained to them that we wanted to create abstract environments/spaces with the main goal of creating deep immersion through audio-visual effects. To begin, we showed the instructors some of the reference images and videos we were using as inspiration as well as the concept sketches done by Eric. We then presented our methodology and the workflow we chose to adopt, which was later approved by them. During our discussion with Neil, it came to our attention that we had to use royalty-free music for our soundtrack, which made us realise that the music tracks we were thinking of using were no longer convenient as they had copyright properties. After the session, we had a team meeting where we agreed that as a start, Talha, Abhinav, and I will be working on creating around 40 seconds of footage in our own software of choice, which will be later rendered as panoramic images. Talha began by creating transitions for our scenes, I started by experimenting with abstract particle systems, and Abhinav learned how to create animated jellyfish that we could potentially use later on.
On Wednesday 7th of February, we already had some rendered 360 videos to show to Ian and get his insight. We had many doubts regarding the initial structure and technology of the dome projection so we made sure to raise these concerns during our session. It turned out that the angular positioning of people experiencing the projection would be arbitrary, and the only thing that we can be sure of is that people will be lying on the floor looking towards the top of the dome. For this reason, we decided to have all scenes symmetrical on the x and y axes, that way no matter which side the person is on, they will be having the same experience as others. Following the previous questions, we had regarding the shape of the dome; we did our own research online and looked at dome technologies posted on the websites of 360 projection companies. Ian later helped us confirm that the dome is indeed semi-spherical with the projection stretching from the top all the way to the bottom edge touching the floor. This meant that we had to focus on creating visuals for the top 75% of the interior surface of the dome instead of things closer to the ground as they won't really be seen by viewers. It was also advised to us that we do not put any main elements at the center of the dome top as there's a possibility they will get warped due to the low resolution of the projection in that area.
Our personal team meeting that followed helped us figure out how we'd like to continue working on our own separate scenes while keeping in mind the importance of seamless transitions between them.

01/30/24 - Your master has betrayed you
Has anyone else noticed technology being all wonky lately?
I went to the library the other day to print a few things. I send my images to myself via e-mail, and I forgot my little password notebook so I couldn’t log into my email. However, I had my iPad with me in case I took a last look before printing and caught something that needed to be fixed, so I figured I could just make a new temporary email and send them with that. Simple fix, no problem.
I try making a Microsoft account. They have a series of “tests” to prove you’re a human. The visual test is a seemingly random string of letters and numbers and a picture of a robot, with absolutely NO instruction as to what you’re supposed to do with them. Is it a code? Am I supposed to drag something somewhere (no, unless the dragging thing wasn’t working in my browser). So there’s an audio test. Which of three audio samples changes instruments half way through? I don’t have my headphones with me, but I’m hidden in the back of the library away from everyone anyway, I figure if I keep it on the lowest setting right up to my ear, it should be fine.
I get through the first test fine. Then it informs me there are three more to go! I don’t hear a single sample that changes instruments in the second test. I listen to it again. A woman comes in and sits at the other end of the table to work on a puzzle. I’m sitting there listening to these stupid audio samples over and over because NONE OF THEM have any instrument changes. Now I feel like an asshole because I’m not alone anymore, listening to music in a library without headphones. RUDE. And I’m getting frustrated because I’ve listened to these samples how many times, and none of them are right. So I start guessing. I make two guesses, fail both, I get to start the tests all over.
Fine, fuck Microsoft anyway.
I can’t use Yahoo, because I’ve tried it for this exact purpose and I think they might have a daily upload limit? I have three fairly large images to upload, so that’s not an option. I try AOL. I didn’t even know AOL was still a thing. Every time I try to check if the email I want is available it tells me there’s an error, try again in a few minutes.
I go to Google, search best free email providers. The first option it gives me isn’t free. The second one says it sent me a validation text. I never got the text, so I press resend, still no text.
I give up at this point. It shouldn’t take more than two minutes to make a new email, if that, and I’ve been through three different options with no success, it SHOULD NOT be this hard. I finally decide to just go home and come back the next day.
And this isn’t even like a one time thing. It’s been happening a lot lately. Very simple things just NOT WORKING. Either technology has specifically singled me out to stop working properly, or there is some kind of universal devolution of technology going on. Too many people using it and it’s starting to malfunction maybe?
Honestly, I’d be okay with that after a while, I think. There would definitely be an extraordinarily bumpy transition period, sure, but I think I would survive just fine. Take us back to the “dark ages” where technology didn’t poison everything it touches.

Sound Design: Resonance – HOME
I’ve decided to go with Resonance by Home, the song that got me hooked on Schyguyy and, in turn, this whole aesthetic. The song I said I’d use before was Memory Reboot but now I feel like that track is too in your face and exciting; I like how neutral Resonance is, it makes the vibe less attributable to one emotion, the uncertain, the unclear, and the undefinable is the essence of liminality.

I’ve used Reaper to essentially do what time remapping does in Premiere Pro for video, but for audio. Pressed alt T to bring up the tempo envelope, and made 3 BPM keyframes (90, 100, and 120, 120 being the song’s normal tempo) with the second transitioning to the third linearly. I did this because I couldn’t choose between the different popular versions of Resonance, sometimes I like Resonance slowed (.9x) + reverb, other times I like super slowed (.75x), but most often I like the original.
Sidenote: I believe many people who’ve listened to this song and songs like it feel the same; remixes of songs being as popular or more popular than the original appears to be positively correlated with Phonk’s popularity (my personal observation).
I looked for ages trying to find out how to remap the time of an audio clip, something that I thought should be simple as it is for video. I asked google, YouTube, chatgpt, nothing. Finally through clicking different “audio item timebase” options I found a solution that no one else on the internet recommended.

“Beats (auto-stretch at tempo changes)”
Before setting this, Reaper was playing the whole track at the BPM of the last keyframe (120BPM, the track’s original tempo) despite the tempo envelope’s time remapping between 90, 100, and 120. All sorted now.
I’m still fiddling around with reverb, thinking I might even try to keyframe particular parameters so that the sound either starts out sounding far away and low clarity and becomes encapsulating and clear, or vice versa.

Zuckerman Interview video on genetic basis of sensation-seeking.
“Well, this is determined from twin studies called Biometrics of Behavior Genetics actually. Using these twin studies we initially found that roughly 60% inheritability. In heritability is the proportion of the variance in a trait that is determined by genetics. We discovered there was 60% -- which is very high for a personality trait which generally runs between 30% and 50%. So, 60% is high for a personality trait.” (Zuckerman 2009).
He goes on to talk about a particular dopamine receptor gene having existed in our species for, not all evolution, but around 50,000 – 100,000 years. He says that because analogues of sensation seeking expressions or approaches to novelty in other species linked to the same biological indicators that humans have, this is more than just an analogy, it indicates it has evolutionary history.
So, I could potentially have some visuals that come up displaying evolution as a potential cause of this ability to have a dulled fear response that gives the individual the rewarding satisfaction of completing a dangerous task.

Looking some examples of good Reverb and how it started out. King Tubby was a prominent figure in the Jamaican soundsystem culture of the 50s. His sound engineering work was pivotal to the creation of reggae and dub in the 60s & 70s; apparently, he’s known for basically creating the concept of remixing!
His modest use of reverb is present on the snare, it’s very noticeable.
“One of Meek’s most famous techniques was using different reverberant spaces in his studio and house for recording instruments with natural room sound—like under his staircase or in his bathroom.
Listen to the different kinds of spaces he creates with various reverbs, especially the uniquely spacey reverb on the backup vocal line: ‘I Hear a New World.’” (Trandafir, 2022).

What’s the mood or style?
Reminds me of JDM car core, where people show off their cars at night time in minimal lighting.
When you see this kind of video where it looks lonely or only has one subject, do you find it creepy?
In the context of how you’ve edited the video, no. But you could, the space itself is not inherently dangerous or creepy, so the space alone isn’t creepy. More aesthetic than uncanny. And the music is not creepy, sort of peaceful almost.

What’s the mood or style?
Quite moody, feel like that song is often used in tiktoks with beauty in them or representing something emotionally motivated or trigger emotions. So that sort of paired with the color grading and the style of the video, creates this real almost reflective feeling.
2.When you see this kind of video where it looks lonely or only has one subject, do you find it creepy?
Nah, more of a feeling of beauty. It’s like the “are you lonely I can’t fix that” blade runner moment, soft. I can’t explain it really, I’d have to think about it for a moment. It’s like standing in the rain but you're not cold and your mind is clear and you’re just there. I can’t put it into words, not static not uncomfortable not creepy not warm it’s just yeah. It’s like a version of the sublime.

I like the composition; I like how all the yous overlap.
What’s the mood, style, or emotion provoked?
Feels busy, there a lot more going on; busier. Makes me feel relaxed. Really like how it’s layed out, it’s very satisfying. Feels quiet even though there’s music. I like how the pole is in in the right third. However, you running at the camera right at the end, is a large contrast to the vibe before that; the mood and seriousness kind of changes. Really liked the environment, you leaning against that pole alone makes you acknowledge the empty environment. These environments are really interesting cuz it doesn’t look like how I imagine Australia looking.
2. When you see this kind of video where it looks lonely or only has one subject, do you find it creepy?
Perhaps the setting itself is more uncanny. If it was just one you leaning against the poll and no rotos it’d probably be creepier and uncannier. So having all those rotos there takes that potential creepiness away.

What’s the mood or style?
Crazy how much sound design affects the vibe cuz that one feels way more stranger things. 80s vibes. I feel like that fits in with the aesthetic. Quite a similar feeling until the end running part that parts quite different adds this urgency to it where the whole rest of the video doesn’t. Totally changed the overall feeling. That running was pretty violent, I don’t think it suits at all, even is slowed down (slowmo) further.
2. When you see this kind of video where it looks lonely or only has one subject, do you find it creepy?
No. I feel like it’s like same sort of video as a guy sitting out the front of a 711 smoking a cigarette and listening to music at like 1am feeling content; It’s an in-between, beauty of the in-between of the suburban lifestyle. Kid that has to wait for a train for an hour cuz the next train doesn’t come for an hour and you’re just sat there waiting, not in a rush cuz you can’t make it come any faster.
Takeaways:
More human presence appears to take away that creepy/uncanny potential
Off centre positioning of large/noticeable objects may be an effective technique, satisfying. e.g., when there’s just me leaning against a large electricity pole in the right third of the frame, and nothing else to see except the environment.
Peaceful
A feeling that is hard to articulate, "reflective feeling" "version of the sublime" "Your mind is clear and you're just there"
The running rotoscope of me breaks the immersion and the feeling; I will not be doing this again.
(McLean, 2023) (Horta, 2023).
I want to make the point that with just a slight change of the human presence and music, the video could become creepy and uncanny; this reminds me of how exhilaration works, it often straddles the threshold of excitement and fear. Essentially, everything ties in as this description of exhilaration is liminal in itself, i.e., occupying a position at or on both sides of a boundary or threshold (being the boundary of excitement and fear).
