For weeks you’d been coming to the large house hidden away behind the winding driveway, trees carefully lined its borders. Weeks and you had yet to met its owner. On your first day, instructions had been left in a letter beside a bottle of water. The list was typed out and terse. A roster of duties.

Every Sunday you drove up the carefully laid mosaic drive and lugged your bag with you, returning to your beat-up truck only to fetch the electric trimmers. Weeds, pruning, hedges, flowers… It was your typical work, the only difference was your still anonymous and unseen employer.

The same water bottle sat on the front step, the same list. You didn’t need to read it at this point. That always took much longer.

“The sunflowers are starting to droop,” The voice scared you and you spun in surprise to face the man who stood on the other side of the screen door. You hadn’t even heard it open. “My mother chose them, you see? I find them tacky. They stick out like a sore thumb.”

“Oh,” You blinked. He watched you dully as you set down the glass bottle. “I could… re-home them. As long as I can dig out the roots.”

“Burn ‘em for all I care,” He scoffed. His blue eyes looked you up and down. “You’re a lot more diligent than the last gardener.”

He leaned his elbow against the door frame as he peered through the screen. His dark blond hair was combed back neatly, his broad shoulders stretched the cotton henley. He looked like any trust funder you’d met. “I should get back to work.”

“Mmhmm,” He nodded and disappeared.

You turned slowly and grabbed your bag of tools. You wanted to look back but didn’t as you crossed to the hedges along the walkway. You knelt and began your careful pruning. You inched down the bushes, snip, snip, snip. The sun beat down as you reached the end and stood.

“She stole,” You winced as you were once more frightened by the man. “Can’t help but wonder why considering how much I’m paying to have leaves cut.”

“I’m sorry she did that,” You squinted as the sun seared your eyes. “Um…”

“Ransom Drysdale,” He introduced himself. “I have your card. I know your name.”

“Well, I was just about to do the back. I just need to… um, get there.” You bent and tucked your shears into your bag and lifted it.

“Looks good, so far,” He said as he followed you from the other side of the hedge. “I can get you some more water.”

“I’m almost done,” You assured him. “But thank you.”

“Alright,” He stopped and you carried on.

You felt him watched you as you disappeared around the back of the house. As you set up, you fought to focus on the work. The rose bushes were always the most obstinate. You took out your pruners and set to detaching the dying buds and stray branches.

As you moved from the white petals to the reds, you sensed something. You glanced over. The man, Ransom, was sat in one of the lawn chairs on the patio outside the tall glass doors. He was far but not so far away that you couldn’t tell he watched you. Well, if his last gardener had sticky fingers, how could you blame him?

You finished up and looked around one last time. You buckled up your large bag and slid the folded paper out of the side pocket, running down the list just to make sure. As you stood, bag slung over your shoulder, you found that your employer had gone as swiftly as he’d appeared.

You hauled it back around the house. The water bottle was gone. You went to your truck and dumped your bag in the bed. You climbed in the front and turned the engine. It kicked up but as you shifted into reverse, then puttered and died. You tried again. Odd. You’d just had it in for an oil change and they said it was in good shape.

You got out and walked around the pick-up. You checked out every inch then opened the hood. You didn’t really know what you were looking for. A shadow came up behind you and two large hands settled on the truck’s nose, a pair of thick arms blocking you in.

“Problem?” Ransom’s warm breath tickled your scalp. You went rigid, unsure of what to do. You didn’t know what to do.

“No.” You said. “Probably just overheated.”

You pushed against his arm but he didn’t move. You grabbed the other which proved just as immovable. You turned around in the tight space between him and the truck.

“What are you doing?”

“Just having a look,” He said coolly. “You think it’s the battery?”

“I don’t know.” You tried to sidestep him again but he still wouldn’t move. “Let me go.”

“You know, at first, I watched you because I was bored. Then it became almost a hobby. Something to look forward to.” He leaned in and you could smell his cologne. “Then I thought about you. After. And you just kept popping up in my head.”

Spanish Gold in Moscow

@hetaliamondaychallenge September 28: “Chaos isn’t meant to be understood”.

Category: Fanfic.

Pair: RusSpa (Russia x Spain).

Words: 2.073.

Genre: Historical, Drama, angst, shounen-ai.

Note(s): During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) the Sencond Spanish Republic was completely ignored by Europe, while the fascist that had rebealed were helped by some militar forces. Spain was basically used as a test game of the military armament and strategy before the 2WW. The only country that gave real help to the Republic was the USSR. To finance the war, the government spent all the Spanish gold.

1938

With an absolute ill look in his face, Spain, who still liked to considerate himself as the Second Spanish Republic, moved his gaze to the door that opened a few seconds before.

Nations could perceive other nations in a certain rate, so he wasn’t really surprised when the other entered the room; he had sensed him from far away, knowing he was leading to his position. Weary eyes without the so-called typical Spanish shine looked at the other, a little smile crossing his feverish face.

- Buenos días, Rusia.

Right in front of him, heavy, enormous and clearly powerful, the actual leader of the giant Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, Russia, stared back at him with his famous sweet smile. Spain didn’t have known him till a pair of centuries ago, but he knew about this certain characteristic even before personally meeting him. He heard from France, England, Prussia, Austria and even Denmark about this “gentle look monster” that was so big and terrifying in the east.

Anyway, Spain didn’t have really hated this guy even once; he was actually grateful for his performance during the Napoleonic wars, though. If it wouldn’t have been for the Russian forces, France’s troops wouldn’t have retired from his vital territory and he wouldn’t have regained his independence. He sighed, trying to get rid of the thoughts of the past.

He was now, currently, going to lose his independence against his own people, in the middle of the worst civil war he had ever have –and Spain was certainly a country that had endured quite some civil wars-.

A strong ache tortured his mind while he suffered a new wave of deaths. Every time his people died, his body would burn and a painful sensation split him in two. They were dying at that very moment, out there, in the valley of the Ebro, killing each other in a battle that had been going on for months. He nearly cried, but couldn’t afford doing it in front of the power that was standing over there, staring at him with a complicated look in his eyes.

After a few moments, Russia, still smiling even if Spain’s looks were terrible, spoke with a calmed voice. – How are your wounds? –he had asked.

A quick smile was formed in the Spaniard’s mouth, quite ironic.

- Well, my right arm has grown up again, so I can’t complain.

Russia stared at the renewed arm, where a few days ago only a stump could have been appreciated. They, nations, received wounds just like humans but their bodies weren’t actually the same. If they were cut, they would recover; if they lost blood, after resting for a while they’d be up again; if they were burn till ashes, they would start to be reborn just like a Fenix. If they were killed, they wouldn’t die.

Only another nation could kill one.

Even if Spain had lately started to question if a nation could kill itself, just like how he was feeling during these days in which he thought he was actually going to be destroyed by his own people.

Russia’s hand reached him and touched his back. He jumped for a moment, sored. He then relaxed, looking far away and not giving attention to the hands that touched his still bleeding injuries.

When a certain happening was so bad, so traumatic, that it gave the nations nearly-coma state, the injuries would still remain bleeding some time. Sometimes it lasted days, sometimes centuries. Those were produced by the bombing, the Biltz, in Guernica, and they still bleed after a year.

He trembled, just by remembering it. The hand in his back made him shiver in pain, but it was the most comforting thing he could afford to have those days, so he didn’t say anything.

Then, he gained composure and faced the other. - What are you doin’ here, anyway? I thought you were going back at your place for some bureaucracy stuff.

Russia remained silent.

That silence made Spain worry.

He didn’t hate Russia at all. He was nice to him, and every time they had met he could only see a true innocence behind the brute and scary dude everyone saw. He liked him quite a bit, and he lately, during his few peaceful years with a Republic, found out that he was such an intelligent and interesting chat partner. Thanks to the leftist ideology of his government the relations with the Soviet Union had been pretty good, so they had become nearly friends at this point.

He even had became the only nation helping him in this suicidal situation.

During civil wars Spain, normally, stayed apart and watched his people decide his fate. He disliked choosing between his beloved people, so que stayed aside.

This time, he couldn’t.

He had seen what happened with Italy after the Great War. The fascism grow up and ate Ita-chan and Romano completely. The brutality that came with it made Spain shiver from his position in the neighbour peninsula. He didn’t recognise his cute Italian brothers with those black shirts and that dark look in their face. Then it expanded to Germany and developed into the National Socialism, which happened to be even worse. A virus was expanding all over Europe and even reached his brother, Portugal.

Spain could have seen it coming. He even spoke with a few general of the army and old requetés, he tried to create a flexible government just to evade the incoming clash. But it was all in vain.

The military coup happened, and while it wasn’t effective, war broke out.

It may be pathetic coming from a country that used to be a world power but, this time, Spain feared his people. That’s why he stayed with the republicans. That’s why he suddenly started dying from the insides.

And while Spain was in that desperate situation, Europe didn’t mind at all and, trying to avoid a Second World War, signed a No Intervention Pact in which 27 countries swore not to intervene in his civil war. That had broken Spain’s heart, who found himself suddenly isolated and left apart, left to die alone. It was even worse when, even if knowing it, the United Kingdom looked away while the Nazi Germany and Mussolini’s Italy broke that pact and helped the rebels. He couldn’t believe England’s coward attitude.

But it was kinda worst when he watched his closest friends actually attack him, help the fascist rebels.

First, the Italian brothers; then, Germany, Austria and Prussia under the name of the Third Reich. Portugal also attacked the Republic by sending his Viriatos and even the American self-proclaimed Hero’s Ford Company sent help to destroy him. All his old friends were against him. He, on the other hand, only received some fusils from Mexico and a few airplanes from a very scared France, who refused to send more help. The only one who lent him it’s power was the Soviet Union, or preferably Russia.

He still remembered when he had met Romano in the site of Toledo. Romano had been excited, he spoke about autarchy, about having a great colonial empire, and about things such as war being the way through the future. His golden eyes sparkled when he had, for the first time in centuries, hugged Spain.

If you join us I promise we’ll bring this to an end. –he had whispered, while speaking about how great it was being a fascist country.

He had been then, suddenly, pulled apart by a giant body that happened to be his ally, Russia, who looked at Romano with electric violet cruel eyes. Spain could have said something to stop a conflict, but, when he looked at Roma, he couldn’t longer see his cute tomato-like crybaby. In the past Romano would have cried and call him to save him but, then, he held his gaze prideful, strong and dangerous in front of the terrible Russia.

A bombing had made them react and, when he came to himself, he was with the International Brigades heading to Madrid.

Remembering all of that made him feel sick and hided half of his face while looking at the floor with a tired smile.

He suddenly had an urge to vomit, but he managed to stay calm and recover a moment later. – Sorry, I beg you excuse me. My house is total chaos now, no, wait… EUROPE is a total chaos now, haha…! I don’t understand how or why, but it makes me think things a way too much.

- Chaos isn’t meant to be understood.

That statement made Spain stay quiet and, then, he looked with his nearly dead green eyes at the other.

- I’m going to ask again, Russia. –he said, this time, cautious-. Why are you here?

- You haven’t paid me to help you lately.

And if he had frozen before, this time Spain had lost all the blood of his veins.

He started sweating. He wanted to cry, but he couldn’t.

- Y-yeah, I-I know… It’s just that all the gold that I’ve been keeping in my reserves has been already taken to Moscow, so I-I…

Russia’s voice was sweet but cold as ice. – You’re not going to pay for my services.

The Spaniard’s eyes opened at his full.

- No! Don’t even think ‘bout that! I’ll pay, I swear it! It’s just that, right now, my people are starving, we don’t have armament and the industry it’s all stopped. I can’t now but, when we win, I’ll return what I owe! A-and I’ll even make it double…! I’ll work hard, I swear. But, now, with all my old gold gone, I…

- So you’re not paying.

The calmed voice made Spain feel like if he were to hyperventilate. He felt like crashing. Like glass about to break.

- I’m not. –he confirmed then.

The taller man stood up, and Spain followed him, clearly desperate.

- Y-you can’t leave me, Russia! If I don’t have your help I’m lost! –after hearing those words the Slavic turned around and faced him, with his so-typical smile in his face.

- So you’ll pay me?

The brunette looked away, clearly ashamed. – I have… nothing to pay you with. B-but I promise..!

- Нет. You can pay me. –response that took an ¿hah..? out of Spain. Russia laughed in a calmed way and then, explained. – Even if you don’t have anything you still possess your body, da?

And Spain’s eyes darkened.

Ah, true. Nation prostitution.

It had been a while.

It used to be so common in the past that he didn’t know why he felt so surprised when Russia suggested it. It may have been ‘cause Russia is fairly younger than himself, or ‘cause the times have changed. He had been so accustomed to it even when he was a child that it wasn’t so much of a surprise finding out that some new power wanted to take advantage of his position to appeal to this. Spain could easily remember when he was forced to be Rome’s or the Islamic Empire’s sex-boy, or even Turkey’s or France’s. Well, he had also been like that with some nations; but, well, let he who is without sin cast the first stone, and he was also a sinner after all.

He looked back at Russia and sighed. – Is this old damaged body worth all the gold I could have had afford to pay you weeks before? –and Russia’s aura became surprisingly pink, just like a happy kid’s.

- And much more! I’m happy so I’ll help you.

And leaned forward to kiss Spain’s forehead. Spain rised an eyebrow, but let him be, anyway. He needed help and Russia was eager to help him only receiving some affectionate touches here and there in return. There were worst things he could have had to do.

Another wave of pain drove him crazy sored and let himself drown in the straw bed he had been using before. He took a deep breath.

Then, when the fever started to be stable again, spoke directly to Russia.

- Well, then, how about a quickie? I have to go back to the battlefield in 30 minutes and I think I could come back quite worse than now, ha ha. –he had laughed, with his shiny –and now tiny- smile.

Russia smiled back, getting rid of his Soviet general military hat while getting closer to the sun-burned skinned nation. He sat, and grabbed the other’s cheeks with a gloved strong hand. That tranquil smile crossed his happy face.

- Let me tell you this is going to be a payment in instalments.

🌻 - there is a bug in the kitchen and I am now too scared to go in there.

🌻 - Harper is trying to protect me but she is frankly useless.

🌻 - The Omaha zoo has both the largest indoor desert as well as the largest indoor rainforest. The rainforest is my favorite.

🌻 - the Niobrara river is apparently really good for canoeing and has like 90 waterfalls.

🌻 - there is a park/reserve just outside Lincoln that has some bison in it. Do not fuck with bison. They will wreck your shit.

🌻 - I don't know if he is still alive but there used to be a bald eagle in the same park that only had one wing. (Actually I think he was missing half of one but still)

🌻 - the cottonwood tree is awful and on a bad year can look like a light snow if too many trees are nearby.

🌻 - the ashfall fossil beds are where you can go to see an active archeology site with the fossils of tons of animals killed by a volcano 12 million years ago.

🌻 - Nebraska has a unicameral. Which is basically instead of a state house and state senate we have one legislative body that is elected on a non-partisan ticket.

🌻 - it is illegal to fish whales in Nebraska. Once again we are completely land locked and there are no whales but.. its still illegal.

🌻 - Morrill Hall also has elephant hall which is the main hall right when you pass the entry desk. It has like 15 (?) fossils in it and apparently it's the largest collection of elephant fossils on display.

🌻 - I think the cranes in North Platte are lame.

🌻 - nebraska furniture mart in Omaha is apparently the largest in the country. Which I can believe. I went to the discount part and it was a giant warehouse. I don't know what the actual sale floor is like.

🌻 - Nebraska has a testicle festival. It's probably exactly what you think it is. Too many fried cow balls is what it is.

🌻 - there is a really cool church between Lincoln and omaha called the Holy Family Shrine. Its got massive arches and is mostly glass. Im not catholic so it's not really a religious thing but a bitch can appreciate some cool architecture.

🌻 - the Hall brothers who made Hallmark (card company) are from Nebraska.

🌻 - UNL's Love library has a Shakespeare Folio. Its in the Special Collections and Archives' vault. I want to see it so bad and one of the archivists told me she would show me it next time they opened the vault but then corona... :(

🌻 - the serial killer Charles Starkweather is buried in Wyuka in Lincoln.

🌻 - Kearney, NE is dead center geographically between Boston and San Francisco.

🌻 - 10 more. There is a roller skating museum in Lincoln. It's at 48th and South streets. Has largest collection of historical roller skates.

🌻 - Larry the Cable Guy I'd from Nebraska and he has recorded narrations for some exhibits in the Lincoln children's zoo. Or he used to it's been awhile.

🌻 - going back to UNL stuffs. Morrill Hall is a pretty cool museum and you should definitely go there. If only to say hi to Archie.

🌻 - the bronze Archie that is outside the museum is currently sporting a fashionable face mask set both over his trunk and his actual mouth.

🌻 - there are a couple dino fossils in that museum and if you step over the barrier and onto the decorative rocks an alarm will go off. And staff will be pissed because now they have to tell at you.

🌻 - said museum also has a lot of cool rocks on the third floor.

🌻 - and the bottom floor has like a hall of nebraska animals where you can hit buttons to listen to animal sounds.

🌻 - aaand a room with a plesiosaur embedded in the floor which is really cool.

🌻 - there is also a cool museum in Nebraska called the SAC. Which is the museum for Strategic Air Command. It has a lot of planes and some stuff from moon missions and air force stuff. When I was little some oil from the big plane in the entrance leaked onto a pillow I had when I was sleeping under it on a trip.

🌻 - nebraska is better than iowa but nebraska kinda sucks too so it's not like it matters truthfully.

🌻 - Nebraska has a lot of weather like giant hailstones and tornadoes but Lincoln doesn't get much because it is in a geographic dent so weather tends to weaken over the city. Which is lame. I want lots of snow.

GF - Beauty Within the Fallen ch.VII

Summary: Two misfit twins come across an enchanted castle, home of a mysterious beast, and slowly begin to form a strong bond that just might survive through anything. Even evil demons.

Dipper, Mabel, and Waddles hastily traveled through the forest. They may have a map leading them to Fiddleford and then to the village, but the wolves might still come. Dipper led the way with a lantern he had borrowed from the castle and the map Ford had given to them. Mabel looked ahead and screamed before running with Waddles at her heels. Dipper looked up from the map and nearly dropped it in shock.

He hurried to the tree Mabel was kneeling at and examined Fiddleford. He looked more dead than alive, his skin pale, almost blue, and heavy bags under his eyes. He must have been searching for them this whole time. Without a single word, much like how they helped Stan when he was hurt, the twins stood on either side of Fiddleford and helped carry him out of the woods. It was the middle of the night when they arrived home. It would have been comforting if the circumstances weren’t so dire. Fiddleford might be dying. The children quickly worked together, fixing medicine, building a fire, dressing their guardian warmly and putting him to bed, until they finally admitted defeat to sleep and curled up with Fiddleford in his bed. ~~~~~~~~~~ The first thing Fiddleford noticed was how warm he felt. And better, much better. Oh. No. No, no, no! Did he die?! Is he in heaven?! He can’t die yet! The children! He wanted to quickly jump up and act, but his body was weak and he ached. Oh. Okay, good. He was still alive. He forced his eyes open and though his vision was blurry, he smiled weakly to find the kids at his sides. Mabel and Dipper both beamed at him, perfectly safe and okay. Mabel was dressed in her blue peasant dress and cloth headband, Dipper in his navy-blue nest and hat with an orange shirt. He gave Fiddleford his glasses and he croaked, “Welcome back.” “Kids,” Fiddleford sat up and slipped on his glasses, then wrapped each child up in a tight hug, which they happily returned. “Oh, thank God. Thank God. I thought I’d never see y’all ‘gain.” “We missed you, too, Fidds.” Mabel cooed. “You’re finally awake…” “What on God’s green Earth happened t’y’all?” Fiddleford asked as he loosened his hold. “You wouldn’t believe it, Fidds!” Mabel cheered as she sat on her knees next to him. “There was this beast in a castle and a talking hammer and an axe and a teapot and all sorts of magic inside and a poor journal who couldn’t talk or eat or sleep and…” “But the beast and the journal - Stan and Ford - are our friends. They took care of us.” Dipper cut Mabel off. “Well, everyone in the castle did, but the guys are awesome! They’re twins, like us, and under a curse.” “And we have to help them!” Fiddleford blinked, completely and utterly confused, but then he smiled. “I believe ya.” The twins are a bit surprised, but then again, they were talking to one of the most open-minded people they knew. “You do?” They asked at the same time. “O’course.” Fiddleford said. “I always said this world’s gotta lotta thangs we don’t quite get. Some thangs are just different, like us. N’ I trust y’all enough to know ya wouldn’t lie ‘bout this. Now, y’all said they’re under a curse?” “Yeah, and to break it, Stan the beast has to fall in love with someone and they have to love him, too.” Mabel answered. “We were gonna try to help by finding a match for him, courtesy of the best matchmaker in the world!” “Hm, well, if…” Fiddleford stopped when he thought he heard yelling coming from outside. “Did y’all hear that?” “Yeah, what’s going on?” Dipper asked and they went outside to investigate. ~~~~~~~~~~ Stan sat on Abuelita the armchair, watching the sun set behind the woods. His mind was elsewhere. Ford, his journal closed, noticed this and wished to help or comfort him, but the beast, back in his normal attire of red cloak over a white shirt and dark pants, was too distracted to open a journal and read at the moment. The sun was now gone, all light but from candles lost, and Stan sighed. He needed to say something. He cautiously opened the journal and said, “I’m sorry, Stanford. I’m sorry I couldn’t set you free.” Stanley, was the only word for a while, but then Ford managed to write more. You were willing to let me go. Thank you. “No,” Stan shook his head. “It’s my fault you’re trapped.” Don’t blame yourself. I’m the one that summoned Bill in the first place. I fell for his easy flattery, but you saw him for the scam artist he is. “I didn’t exactly make this curse easier for you.” No, perhaps not. Ford admitted, but then quickly added, But your heart was in the right place. You’ll never admit this but you were afraid. I understand; when the curse was first brought upon us neither of us knew how to respond. Accidents happen, Stanley. “Yeah, and I’m chop full of ‘em.” Even still, I won’t lie to you. All those years you never opened me, kept me in that glass container, I nearly went insane. There were so many times I didn’t know if I existed anymore. That wasn’t even the worst of it. All I could do was listen and watch you suffer alone. “I know, I know!” Stan growled. “That was probably the dumbest thing I’ve ever done, and I’ve done some really stupid stuff, and I’m sorry.” It’s alright. I forgive you. I should have been a better brother to you. I should have seen your pain and done something about it years ago. “And now you’re gonna die like this.” Stan said darkly. As will you. “Who cares?” I do! And those children care, too! The tiniest of smiles flickered on the beast’s face. His memory brought back those kids for a moment, a beautiful, glorious moment. Dancing with them, reading stories, teaching Dipper how to fight and hugging Mabel close to his furry chest. You miss them, don’t you? Stan sighed, a tired old man. “Yeah. I love them.” I know you do. And because you love them, they will be with you, in your heart, for evermore. Stan, once again, cracked a small smile at that. He had no idea if they found Fiddlebucket or not, or if they ever made it home, but he hoped that they were safe and happy. Do you wish to see them? Ford asked. Look at my hand. You can see them whenever you want. Stan, excited, closed the journal and looked at the six-fingered hand. He grinned at the sight of the children, standing at a front door with an old man with a long beard and big nose. His smile dropped when the children looked scared and uncertain. He watched as echoes of voices grazed his large ears. “What’s going on?!” Dipper asked. “What are you all doing?!” “Dipper!” Lazy Susan gasped. “Mabel! You’re okay!” “But… how…” Blubs stuttered. “Gideon says you were kidnapped by some beast in a castle!” “What?!” Mabel gasped and shook her head wildly. “No, no! He saved us! He saved our lives! He’s our friend!” Stan beamed with pride. Lil’ Gideon paled. “I… I don’t understand. Y-You were t-t-trapped by a monster!” “He’s not a monster!” Dipper snapped. “Mabel’s telling the truth! The beast wouldn’t hurt anyone. He gave us a place to stay and took care of us.” “Yeah!” Mabel said as she and Dipper left the porch of their home to talk to the angry crowd. “He’s sweet and kind and gentle. You don’t have to be afraid of him. He’s a very good person. He even liked Waddles!” “No, I don’t!” Stan growled with a smile, unheard by everyone except for Abuelita and Ford. The old armchair rolled her eyes, knowing her boss was lying. Gideon’s face reddened, his chubby face curling inward in fury. “Of course! The beast has them under his spell! I’ve heard of dark magic like this, but never before seen it with my own eyes!” “What, no!” Mabel cried out. “Officers, you don’t believe him, do you? You won’t let this happen, will you?” “Sorry, kids, but we trust Gideon over a couple of odd-balls like you.” Blubs said coldly, arms crossed over his chest. “And nothing short of a miracle could ever change that.” “NO!” The kids shrieked and turned to Fiddleford. “Fiddleford, tell them!” Dipper called. “Tell them it’s not true!” The angry mob laughed. “You’d put your word on a loony old man?! The same guy that destroyed the town three times just this month?!” Durland cackled. “I done rebuilt it every time!” Fiddleford defended. Gideon stood on his dazzling white horse and called out to the townsfolk, “You see?! The spell spreads! Look at what the monster has done to our poor friends!” “He’s not a monster, Gideon,” Mabel snarled and pointed at the white-haired boy. “YOU ARE!” “ENOUGH!” Gideon hopped down and grabbed her wrist so tight she winced in pain. Stan growled dangerously. Dipper yelled and was about to act, but Ghost Eyes grabbed a hold of him. “Don’t worry, Mabel, once I kill the beast and the spell is broken, you shall finally be my queen! Keep them safe! Lock them away! We can’t have them gettin’ in our way!” “NO!” Mabel cried out as a big beefy man grabbed her and shoved her, Dipper, and Fiddleford into a cart and it was locked up. “HELP! HELP US!” Dipper rammed his body against the iron doors to try to escape, but it was useless. “The beast will come after us all! He’ll come after us in the night!” Gideon called out to the crowd, who cheered and yelled. “I say we kill it!” “YEAH!” “NO!” Mabel cried as tears ran down her face. “DON’T HURT HIM, PLEASE!” “We're not safe until he's dead!” Northwest concluded. “He'll come stalking us at night!” Mr. Valentino gasped. “Set to sacrifice our children to his monstrous appetite!” Manly Dan cried out, hugging his three sons so tight their faces turned blue. “He'll wreak havoc on our village if we let him wander free!” Lazy Susan feared. “So it's time to take some action, fellas!” Gideon called out. “It's time to follow me!” And the crowd began to gather guns, torches, pitchforks, and chanted “kill the beast” courageously into the night. Stan stood up quickly and left the armchair, throwing the door open. “Soos! Wendy! Get over here!” Soos and Wendy hopped over as quick as they could. “We’ve got a code Piertotum Locomotor! Man the boundaries! Protect the castle! Get ready for battle! Go, go, go!” And the beast left to organize the attack, all the while he couldn’t shake away the blossoming feeling that those kids were willing to risk their lives for him. Maybe he was worth it, after all. ~~~~~~~~~~ Even after the mob marched away, Dipper continued to throw himself against the doors, making loud bangs but no progress. “DIPPER, STOP!” Fiddleford grabbed him and rubbed his shoulders. “You’ll hurt yourself, calm down.” “We have to do something!” Dipper cried out. “This is all our fault! They’ll kill him! We have to help!” “Hush, boy, hush.” Fiddleford hugged him and rubbed circles into his back. “We’ll think o'somethang. We are three geniuses, after all.” Mabel looked out the window, though the bars, and tried to find something that could help. Her eyes dazzled at the sight of her pig as he ran up to the cart and oinked. “WADDLES! Waddles, we need your help! Go get us a pry bar! You can do it, Waddles, go find one! Good pig!” “Mabel,” Dipper scolded. “He’s just a pig! There’s no way he even knows what a pry bar is!” “C’mon, Dipper, have faith!” “No, no! YOU need to be realistic! I love Waddles, too, Mabel, not there’s no way he’s gonna…” The pig squealed with joy and the three humans peered down to find a ring of keys in his mouth. Mabel gave her brother a sassy look. “Well, it’s not a pry bar.” Dipper quipped. Waddles tossed the keys in the air and Fiddleford put his arm through the window and caught them. He pushed himself against the door and started to fiddle with the lock and the keys. “One of these gotta be it…” ~~~~~~~~~~ Manly Dan led the team to chop down a huge pine tree and cut it so they could use it as a battering ram. The mob hoisted it on it’s shoulders, following Gideon on his noble steed and Ghost Eyes marching beside him. “Take whatever booty you want, but the beast is mine!” He called out, using the map Gideon had woken up with in his fist to find their way. Gideon grinned to find the castle before them and they ran up to the giant doors. Miraculously, it only took one hit and the doors flew open, giving the invaders a false idea that this would be easy. They found the castle filled with items in the lobby, like a rich yard-sale. Gideon left his horse outside and led the crowd into the dark and quiet castle. Books, chairs, chests, dishes, nearly every type of item surrounded the unafraid villagers. Ghost Eyes leaned down to whisper to Lil’ Gideon. “Aren’t you worried this place might be haunted?” “Don’t lose your head, Ghost Eyes.” The bodyguard picked up an axe from a table and held it, ready to attack anything that may come his way. “NOW!” The axe cried out, and the castle lit up with life as the battle began. Drawers smacked people in the face. A coat-rack boxed with one of Manly Dan’s sons and won quickly. Pots fell on people's heads and clashed with metal spoons and pans, making their ears ring. A chest consumed people and dumped them back outside like dumping out trash. Grenda stood from the second floor and cried out, “GRENDA’S JOINING THE PARTY!” and she fell on top of Ghost Eyes. Gideon dodged out of the fight and went up the stairs. Three men were coming towards her to attack, but Grenda had cloth and material swarm around them and soon they were dressed in drag. Two of the boys screamed in horror and ran, but Tad Strange only stared ahead and said calmly, “This is fine.” Robbie was kicking tea cups and trying to squish them, but Candy hung from the above chandelier and spilt boiling hot tea on the crowd. Wendy was running away from Manly Dan’s own axe, but Soos came out of nowhere and hammered him in the face, knocking him out cold. Melody burst through the doors of the ballroom and shot her keys like bullets. Meanwhile, using Ford’s given map, Dipper, Mabel, Fiddleford, and Waddles were running up to the castle and gasped to find the battle before them. “Hurry!” Mabel cried out and they hurried up to the front door. Fiddleford used his banjo to swing at people’s heads. Waddles bit people’s ankles. Killbone was about to go after Fiddleford for helping the enemy, but Lazy Susan hit him over the head with her rolling in, knocking him out cold. “Susan?! But I thought…?” “I’m sorry, old friend, I just didn’t wanna be locked up.” Lazy Susan explained as she and Fiddleford fought back-to-back. “Claustrophobic. Plus I could’ve very well fight the bad guys locked away, could I?” “Ah, gotcha. Well then!” Fiddleford swung his banjo and hollered, “Fight like a hillbilly, woman!” Mabel and Dipper punched people and shoved them out of the way as they hurried up to the West Wing to make sure their friends were okay. ~~~~~~~~~~ Minutes prior, Gideon cautiously opened the door, a bow and arrow in his chubby hands. His eyes immediately landed on the handsome journal on the table. He noticed the six fingers on the golden hand and he hypothesized that this journal must have the answer to undoing the spell Mabel was under. No wonder it was so well cared for while everything else in the room was ruined beyond repair. Gideon walked into the room to take the journal, but the door slammed behind him and he spun around, arrow ready to shoot. His eyes widened at the huge gray beast before him, peering down at him with cold brown eyes and on all fours like an animal. “Last chance, kid.” The beast growled warningly. “Get out before things get ugly.” “You mean uglier than you, never!” Gideon declared and shot his arrow. Stan dodged it, but soon saw that it was a distraction so the little troll could run to Ford. The beast tried to get their first, but just a few feet shy and Gideon had the journal in his chubby hands. “I got it! I got it!” “Give it back.” Stan snarled. “Why?” Gideon asked coldly with a wicked smile. “Why’s it so important, monster?” “Just give it to me.” Stan was careful to sound firm, but he looked in no hurry to hurt a kid or his brother. Gideon opened the journal to find it blank. He flicked through the pages roughly, losing his temper, and when he concluded that the answers he was looking for were not here, he ripped a page out and yelled in fury. Stan grunted and sunk, like he was in pain. Gideon noticed this and grinned as an idea came to his twisted mind. This journal must be the source of his powers! Destroying it would free Mabel! Gideon ripped out another page, then another, and another. Stan growled on all fours and curled in on himself in overwhelming pain. He tried to shake his head and clear away the distraction, but he could practically hear Ford’s screaming in his ears, even if it was only his imagination, and it was maddening. “Stop it… stop it… STOP IT!” Stan gnarled at Gideon. “Or what, huh?” The child mocked. “What are you gonna do, huh? Huh?! Face it, foul creature, without this book you’re nothing!” He laughed and tore out another page. Gideon suddenly cried out in pain and dropped the journal. Stan huffed and puffed to try to compose himself. He looked up to see Dipper and Mabel standing in front of him, facing Gideon, both of them wearing scary looks and Dipper had his fists curled and ready to strike again. Gideon rubbed his pale chubby cheek. “Ow! What the… how did you…?” “Doesn’t matter.” Dipper snapped. “You’re leaving. Now.” “Oh, am I, boy?” And Gideon ran to him to punch him. While the boys punched each other and fought, Mabel hurried to Stan and petted his shoulder, trying to soothe him and help him feel better. “Stan? Are you okay? Are you hurt?” Hazy still, Stan weakly looked up at the girl and smiled. “Mabel… you came back.” “Of course we did.” She looked back at the fight and saw that Gideon was having a slight advantage. He shoved into Dipper and they both fell through and broke a window, toppling down the roof. Mabel and Stan yelled with worry and ran after them. The boys tumbled and rolled, punching and slapping each other. Dipper fell on a balcony and groaned with ache while Gideon squealed and kept on going. He fell on a slanted roof and staggeringly got up. Like a scrawny cat, he climbed up to Dipper and kicked him in the jaw. Dipper quickly rolled up on his feet and used the lessons Stan had taught him to fight. Mabel quickly slid down the slanted tile roof and jumped into the fight. She punched Gideon in the jaw and found that his stuck-up traditions made him not hit a girl. She and Dipper took advantage of this weakness and worked together to beat up their enemy until he fell and didn’t get up. He rubbed a swollen black eye and looked up at the angry pre-teens before him. The beast, he noticed, was over on the next roof and letting the twins handle their own battle with a huge smile. “Listen, Gideon,” Mabel said coldly. “It’s over. I will never ever be with you.” “Yeah!” Dipper backed up and Mabel kicked him in the head, just hard enough to knock him out cold. Stan hopped down behind the twins and had his hands on his hips. “Nice technique, pumpkin.” “Stan!” They both cried out with relief and ran up to him. Stan got on one knee and engulfed them in a hug. Mabel nuzzled her face into his fur and Dipper held him tightly. “We’re so sorry, we tried to stop them but they wouldn’t listen to us!” The boy said. “It’s okay, kid, it’s okay.” Stan soothed and rubbed his back as he purred. “I know.” “You know?” Mabel gasped with a huge grin. “Ford! He showed you, didn’t he?! You asked to see us, didn’t you?!” Stan shrugged and put the kids down to ruffle their hair. “What can I say, I missed you knuckleheads.” Mabel squeezed his paw. “We missed you, too, Stan.” Meanwhile, Gideon’s one unswollen eye opened yellow and slit, like a cat’s. He rose and flexed his fingers and arms, getting used to his body. Standing with his back to the happy reunion, he began to cackle evilly. A chill ran down Stan’s spine. His grip on the twins tightened. “I know that laugh.” Dipper’s jaw dropped. “No… it couldn’t be… it’s impossible...” Gideon turned around and they saw his eye. Stan growled protectively and hunched over the kids. “Bill Cipher.”

1) Are they woodier or leafier? Succulent, deciduous, evergreen?

honestly I've never thought about if much, but Ford's a weird sort of mid ground at the minute. Body wise he's more a softer leafier texture, but hair wise it's a toss up. His hair at the moment is mainly thorns but I’ve been imaging lately that if he grew it out it'd be more deciduousleaf that evergreen needle. So deciduousI guess

2) were they modeled after a specific plant?

If not, what was your inspiration? Ford was honestly based off of a cat, I've always loved chimeras and other mutations - especially in how they present!

The only sylvari I have that's actually based off of a plant is technically Alasthaine - who's based off of albino plants!

3) what kind of climate are they most comfortable in?

Ford's mostly comfortable when it's slightly warmer out, not blistering hot like the desert, but the general warmth of Caledon. Due to his dark and light patterning, extreme hot and cold occasionally flatten him a little more and it throws him off kilter

Muirghra will scream if you throw snow at him. He's not about that cold shit, give him desert or give him death

4) what kind of climate are they least comfortable in?

Accidentally answered Ford's in the question before! And Muirs.

If you put Gio in the cold, legend has it you'll learn new swears and see five invented and reinvented in two minutes!

5) what’s their relationship with gender?

(warnings, I'm dumb about gender and honestly still figuring out all of the cool ways to explore it! So if I say anything ignorant, my bad and please tell me so I can correct it!)

Ford identifies as non-binary, but largely uses male pronouns at present - he sees himself as a non-binary man, if that makes sense. (I actually wanted to explore intersexism with him due to the correlation that can be found between intersexism and chimeras, but was struggling to find resources, after chatting with some helpful folks, non-binary felt right, and it totally fits Ford to a T!)

6) what’s their relationship with the Pale Tree?

Ford believe his Mother has the sylvari races best interests at heart, but has emotionally cut herself off from her children for fear of them dying or turning. He understands her more as he grows, but occasionally doesn't agree with her methods or tone. He still behaves a bit like a child trying to get their parents attention around her though

7) how do they react to Mordremoth when they first hear him?

Ford felt dread since he knew all the information we know at the start of HoT. He was pushy and aggressive to be around and just, so scared that people would think he'd gone Mordrem or turn on his brothers and sisters, that'd he'd fail them

Albuinn genuinely thought it was just some weird intrusive thoughts at the beginning, so he just sorta, shrugged off a dragon

8) during what cycle were they born?

Ford had a big ol'crush. It started off in admiration for his big brother, and slowly as it crept more towards HoT, he caught serious feelings. He planned to confess once they got Trahearne out the jungle.

Giolladhe never met him, but always felt sorry for the Firstborn everyone had seemingly already buried

Loefell loves his partner dearly, and is surprisingly practical for his age. He might be young and head over heals for tall, dark and brooding, but he's not quite as stupid as people seem to think. He would go to the ends of the earth for him though

Ford saw Mordremoth, a white stag, and mainly his sister - they didn't react with much else till they merged and got yeeted out into a fight with the Court

15) favorite thing about playing your salad?

Ford is real dumb, and also very kind so it's a nice combo! The fact I can let the angst rip at any moment and have comedy the next also is just /chef kiss. In game I need to beef his ass up though, going all out burn wasn't my smartest idea! Albuinn is my old main, and boy do habits die hard! I can autopilot on him no problem! It feels nice to see his anxiety lessen and him grow character wise

Ford’s currently got a mix of Vigil, Tier 2 sylvari cultural, and Elonian - and a helmet that’s name escapes me

Essay/Ramblings/Theory on the play “Hand to God”

(This wasn’t that long ago so it’s less cringey. I still think that it was an amazing performance and I wish I could’ve seen it again. But I guess that’s what’s unique about plays, they’re limited and can’t really be seen again- unless it’s at a famous theater with famous people in it and they now they can sell copies if they record it. This is one of those plays that’s a lot better in person than in writing. Enjoy. )

To be honest, Hand to God by Robert Askins is a bit of a mess in writing. The characters use Southern words and phrases in one scene, then change to average American speech in the next, and one of the character’s declaration of love seems ridiculous and unnecessary. There are elements that make it intriguing and a good play, but for the most part, it was a lot to take in.

On stage, however, it is a different story. The dialogue is consistent and sharp, and all the characters’ weird announcements come across as hilarious or poignant. Everything that was done right in the script is magnified ten fold in the stage production to produce an absolutely stunning play.

Before I explain the absolute amazingness of the production, let me give you some background on the play itself. It’s set in a church basement in Texas, where a recent widow, Margery, has tried to start a puppet club. In the club is her son, Jason, a super shy, awkward kid with good intentions and a huge crush on Jessica. She, the only girl in the group, is kind of done with everything, but also is kind of intrigued by Jason. There’s also Timothy, a ‘bad boy’ who is forced to go to the puppet club by his alcoholic mother so she doesn’t have to look after him. And Pastor Greg comes in every now and then to remind Margery that he’s been very generous with the church’s space and she should really make a skit by Sunday’s service.

So Margery has to rally her troops made up of three disgruntled and awkward teenagers, and, Jason’s puppet, Tyrone, who has a very nasty and dirty mind of his own. It doesn’t help that he seems intent on helping Jason stand up for himself by rudely and disastrously intervening in his life.

Now, the production. Just walking through the doors was different. Instead of a single stage with rows of chairs in front of it, the space was set up like the basement of the church. God Loves You and Jesus is our Savior posters were plastered on the walls, and one of the stages had shelves of apostle puppets, craft supplies, a puppet stage, Bibles, and books full of Christian puppet skit ideas. The secondary stage was bare, but open and ready to use (they ended up using it for a car scene and an office scene- it was great). The concessions stand (which was used during the performance) had punch and cookies made by the ladies of the church, and a sign declaring all proceeds went to mission trips. The audience sat around tables with checkered churchy tablecloths and materials for making our own sock puppets. The stage manager welcomed us in with a greeting of “Welcome to Praise Church!” and the program/playbill was designed as a church newsletter.

So needless to say, I was impressed the moment I walked in.

And then the play started.

The lead actor, Liam Forde, balanced the incredibly different characters of Jason and Tyrone so amazingly it’s kind of hard to describe. He didn’t try to keep his mouth closed while he was talking as Tyrone, but that didn’t matter. The voices and inflections and body language and styles of speaking were so different and so well executed that I forgot Tyrone was a piece of fabric at the end of Forde’s arm.

Susan Rome played the role of Southern Christian suburban alcoholic newly widowed mom beautifully. It was in her tight and unwilling smiles; her weakness for the bad boy teenager, Timothy; her need for Jason to support her even though puppet club terrified him; and her eventual mental breakdown and partial healing.

Jessica, Timothy, and Pastor Greg as characters were mainly there to introduce and supplement the things Jason and his mother went through. They were also means of escape, though in Jason and Jessica’s case it was a bit healthier. Margery kind of leaped on Timothy when she got close to the breaking point, and Pastor Greg was mainly there to help her come to her senses about Timothy.

There a lot of other things I could talk about related to this production, but the main reason I started writing this is because I have a theory about Tyrone and Jason that I wanted to write about.

Near the end of the play, Tyrone goes a bit crazy and bites off part of Timothy’s ear and takes over one of the rooms in the basement with hellish graffiti and bloody stuffed animals hanging from the ceiling. Most of the characters seem to agree that Tyrone has been possessed by Satan and that they need to exorcise him. Jason’s kind of too scared to care what’s making Tyrone like that, he just wants him to go away.

I don’t think it’s Satan. I think it’s Jason’s darker side. I think that part of Jason needs to express himself, the parts that have come from his dad’s death and being made fun of, so it gets expressed through this puppet. But it’s unconscious, so Jason just thinks that Tyrone has become his own personality and entity somehow, when in reality he’s fighting the worst parts of himself.

There’s a couple reasons why I think this. It’s kind of because I don’t believe in Satan, and the exorcism Pastor Greg tried didn’t work. But mainly it’s because Jason is finally able to get rid of Tyrone when his mother finally really listens to him and lets him explain that he’s fucked up about his dad’s death just as much as she is. He’s able to let go of whatever dark parts came from his dad dying, so he can ‘defeat’ Tyrone, the physical embodiment of those dark parts.

So, yeah. Hand to God. Shout out to Taylor for telling me to write an essay about this. I know it’s not really an essay, more ramblings, so sorry about that.

New from Kevin Wozniak on Kevflix: Best Movies of 2019 – Best Movie Moments

Every year when I begin to look back at the movies of 2019 and begin to make my lists, this is always my favorite list to make. It is a tough list to make, but always an exciting and interesting list to make. I get to look back and look at my favorite moments of the year in movies. Whether it was a scene or a moment that scared me, thrilled me, caused an emotional reaction, or one of just pure entertainment, these are the ones that knocked me out in 2019. Here are my picks for the best movie moments of 2019.

10. LANDING ON NEPTUNE – AD ASTRA

The third act of James Gray’s brilliant sci-fi film is one of great filmmaking and visual effects. Astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) is on the tail end of his mission and goes to Neptune to find his father and this scene literally took my breath away. Just the sheer idea of traveling that far into space is unbelievable, but this also sets the movie up for its big emotional climax. It’s a gorgeous scene and the best part of James Gray’s stunning achievement.

9. SOCCER BALL PREGNANCY – GREENER GRASS

Greener Grass was one of the weirdest movies I saw in 2019, yet one that I grew to love the more I thought about it and the more I saw it. This is a twisted, hilarious, dark comedy that is full of bits and scenes of bizarre behavior. My favorite bit, and one that is making me laugh as I type this out, is a simple one and one you have to see to understand, as explaining it doesn’t do it justice. During a neighborhood soccer game, Lisa (pictured above, played by Dawn Luebbe) takes the soccer ball as it was kicked out of bounds, sticks under her dress, and from that point on is pregnant. This is a recurring bit throughout the movie, which included a baby shower, the child being born, and family pictures. Again, it’s strange stuff, but it is also the funniest running joke of 2019.

8. OPENING SHOT – CLIMAX

Gaspar Noé films are films that stick with you. He completely immerses you into them and makes you feel some kind of way when watching them, usually a feeling of discomfort or horror. The opening to his latest film, Climax, is no different. This five-minute, uncut introduction features over a dozen actors dancing their hearts out to techno music. It is an exhausting, hypnotic shot, filled with slick camera moves, stunning colors, and crazy dance movements that sets us up for what is to come in this horrifying, claustrophobic trip.

7. FINAL SHOT – PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE

Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of Lady on Fire is a movie that has stuck with me since I saw it back in October. It is a beautiful love story about two women who’s love grows stronger and deeper the more they observe each other, yet they know their relationship cannot last. The final shot of the film a master stroke from Sciamma and powerhouse acting from Adèle Haenel. Marianne (Noémie Merlant) and Héloïse’s (Haenel) relationship has ended when Héloïse was forced to get married. Having not seen each other since, Marianne sees Héloïse at a concert on the other side of theater. Vivaldi’s “Concerto No. 2”, a callback to an earlier scene, begins to play and we watch Héloïse go through a whirlwind of emotions. We watch as she remembers everything about her time with Marainne, the good times, the bad times, the times that they laughed, and the times they cried. Sciamma doesn’t cut from Haenel and we watch for a solid two minutes as the emotions rush through her. It’s a beautiful final shot in one of the most beautiful movies of the year.

6. “I AM IRON MAN” – AVENGERS: ENDGAME

“I am Iron Man.” These words shook the comic book movie landscape forever and kicked off one of the biggest franchises in cinematic history. Eleven years later, these words are more powerful than ever. When it seemed like Thanos had gotten the best of the Avengers once again, capturing all the infinity stones on the infinity gauntlet, he tries to snap everything in existence away, only to realize Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) has taken the stones and made his own gauntlet on his suit. Iron Man then utters the words, “I…am…Iron Man.”, then snaps Thanos and everything he brought away, saving the galaxy. These would be last words Tony Stark would ever say and it was the perfect end to a character arc, coming full circle from the time he said them at that press conference back in 2008 to his dying words in 2019.

5. “IT’S GONNA HAPPEN” – THE IRISHMAN

There were a number of scenes from Martin Scorsese’s three-and-a-half-hour gangster masterpiece that I could have chosen here. But this small scene really hit me hard. In a quiet dinning room on their way to a wedding, Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci) informs Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro) that he will be traveling to Detroit to kill his friend Jimmy Hoffa, all while eating cereal and drinking coffee. This is Pesci’s Oscar scene, as his calm, yet terrifying demeanor really puts Frank in a bind. De Niro doesn’t say much, but his eyes say everything. He is now torn between the man who brought him into this life and his friend. It’s a powerful scene and a sucker punch to the gut.

4. MEETING MR. ROGERS – A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

The opening of Marielle Heller’s wonderful film starts exactly how every Mr. Rogers episode started, with Mr. Rogers (Tom Hanks) walking into his home singing “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”. This is our first glimpse of Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers and it is the moment we fall in love with him. There was a lot of speculation around Hanks as Rogers, as he doesn’t look and sound anything like Rogers. But with the help of brilliant costume design, some small make-up, and Hanks hitting all the vocal notes, you immediately believe Hanks is Rogers. Ford v Ferrari is a great American sports movie. A movie about the underdog overcoming all obstacles to to rise to the top. One of the key aspects of a great sports movie is a great, inspirational speech, a la Miracle or Friday Night Lights. Ford v Ferrari has one and it is said by the wonderful Tracy Letts as Henry Ford II. Ford is giving a speech to Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) about the history of Ford Motors during time of war and how the company persevered through tough times, symbolic of how everything is going for Shelby in trying make a car that is capable of winning the 24 hour at Le Mans. Ford ends his speech by telling Shelby, “go to war” and it is a moment that might as well have come with a bald eagle screeching in background. A speech that represents everything red, white, and blue and makes you want to stand up and yell, “AMERICA!” while pumping your fist in the air.

2. THE FIGHT – MARRIAGE STORY

Two of the best performances of 2019 come from Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson in Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story. The two actors give arguably the best performances of their respective careers and commit to being a couple attempting to go through a divorce with as little stress as possible and as cordial as possible. However, that doesn’t happen and the two end up at each other’s throats, in an explosive scene of emotion and acting mastery. The entire film was building to this moment and it is as an absolute explosion of a scene. Johansson and Driver is incredible and Baumbach’s writing is top-tier. You feel everything they are saying. You feel the pain, the anger, and the sadness that comes with every word. It’s acting at its finest and if these two end up winning Oscars for their performances, this is the scene that got them those statues.

1. “AVENGERS! ASSEMBLE!” – AVENGERS: ENDGAME

As soon as I saw this scene, I knew it would be number one on this list and it wouldn’t be close. This scene is not only the definition of awesome, but it is epic on every scale. When all hope seems lost for Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and the remaining Avengers and it looks like Thanos’ army will take over the planet, we hear the static of Falcon’s (Anthony Mackie) voice in Captain America’s ear, followed by the appearance of T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) coming from a Doctor Strange portal. It is then an onslaught of everyone from the MCU appearing on screen, both those who disappeared in the snap and those who survived, all culminating in an attack on Thanos and his army with Captain America commanding, “AVENGERS! ASSEMBLE!”. Alan Silvestri’s epic score takes over and we watch as eleven years and over twenty movies come together on the screen at the same time. You can’t help but get emotional watching this. We have grown with the MCU and The Avengers and all of these characters and seeing them all on screen at the same time fighting for their lives and the galaxy is something we had been waiting for for over a decade. This is not only the best scene of 2019, but possibly the best scene of the decade, symbolizing so much of what cinema has become while also being the as big as anything that has ever been on the big screen.

‘He’s the king’: Remembering the unmistakable charisma and enduring legacy of Hayden Fry

IOWA CITY, Iowa — An icon. An innovator. A motivator. A legend.

College Football Hall of Fame coach Hayden Fry was all of these. Now, after losing a final battle with cancer at age 90, he belongs to the ages.

No single person wielded more influence at the University of Iowa or was more important to its history than Fry. From inventing the logo that still represents the Hawkeyes to breaking the Michigan-Ohio State 13-year Rose Bowl stranglehold to building one of the sport’s greatest coaching trees to shattering the Southwest Conference racial barrier at SMU, Fry’s influence on college football ranks among the most impactful in the sport’s history.

“Hayden Fry is a college football icon and an Iowa legend,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said in a statement. “His Hall of Fame career is well known, but personally, he will always be the man who took a chance on me at the start of my coaching career. I was proud to coach with him and honored to succeed him when he retired. He’s been a great mentor and a true friend. I am forever grateful to him.”

Fry was born in Eastland, Texas, and grew up in Odessa. His homespun, colloquial clichés were formed in his days as a West Texas youth. His common phrase “scratch where it itches” became his trademark Haydenism. Few, if any, coaches had a better psychological read on a team or a situation. Fry was folksy and funny but could be tough and stern. His military background as a captain in the Marines demanded discipline. He finished his 37-year coaching career with a 232-178-10 coaching record. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003.

With unmistakable charisma, Fry developed friendships as a youngster with Roy Orbison and President George H.W. Bush and later with John Wayne and Lee Iacocca, the Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Corp. CEO. Fry once said that Iacocca was so impressed with SMU’s hard-fought loss to Michigan that he named Ford’s muscle vehicle “the Mustang.”

Fry became Iowa’s coach in 1979 and ended a 19-year streak of non-winning seasons with a Rose Bowl appearance in 1981. It was the first time since 1967 that a team other than Michigan or Ohio State represented the league in Pasadena. Fry won Big Ten titles in 1981, 1985 and 1990 and guided the Hawkeyes to 14 bowl games over a 17-year period. His 96 wins in Big Ten play sit fifth in league annals.

Fry’s coaching tree ranks among the elite in college football history. His 1983 staff included Bill Snyder, Barry Alvarez, Kirk Ferentz, Dan McCarney and Bob Stoops, all of whom became the winningest head coaches at their respective schools. Others like Bret Bielema, Mike Stoops, Mark Stoops, Bo Pelini, Jim Leavitt, Jay Norvell and Bob Diaco started their coaching careers under Fry.

But of all his many accomplishments, Fry was most proud of giving Jerry LeVias a scholarship at SMU to integrate the Southwest Conference in 1965.

“That is the greatest thing I did in 47 years of coaching, from high school to the Marine Corps to college, is to give the first black player a scholarship in that part of the world because it opened up the door for all the other fine black players to at least have a choice of where they wanted to go to school,” Fry said. “Because at that time they had to go to the Big Ten or the Pac-10 or whatever.

“That was a very difficult thing to do. I’ve been told repeatedly by law enforcement, specifically by the FBI and CIA and other people I had to deal with, not to discuss it publicly because what it does is it triggers all the other people in the world that are sick or as I call the rednecks who are still fighting the Civil War and they do bad things. So you don’t discuss some of those things. But I can just tell you briefly I would say 95 percent of you present would not believe what Jerry LeVias went through, what I went through, what my coaching staff went through from examining our locker room on out-of-town trips, to checking the airplane that we flew on to see if there was a bomb on it, whatever. We even had a sniper in the stands at one of the games that was going to kill Jerry.

“We screened all of his mail, all of his telephone calls. But he had real problems on campus, from his own teammates, some of the faculty members. They just weren’t used to dealing with African-Americans and it was bad and to this day it was bad. A lot of it is not publicized. And I would never tell Jerry all of the things that were bad because it would have scared him to death. He was scared enough as it was.”

In a statement Tuesday night, LeVias said, “Coach Fry caught a lot of hell for doing what he did.”

Fry led SMU for 11 seasons. In 1966, he took the Mustangs to the Southwest Conference title and a Cotton Bowl berth. In his final season, SMU finished 7-4 but Fry was fired after a 49-66-1 overall record.

“I remember as a kid watching the Hayden Fry Show in Texas at SMU,” said longtime Iowa assistant Don Patterson, who was Fry’s offensive coordinator from 1989-98. “Anybody who knows anything about Texas football understands he’s a living legend in Texas. To this day he is. He can’t go anywhere in Texas without being noticed.”

After leaving SMU, Fry spent six years at North Texas and posted 10-1 and 9-2 records in his final two years, respectively. His Mean Green squad, however, was not invited to a bowl game either year and it frustrated him. In late 1978, he met with Iowa athletics director Bump Elliott to discuss the vacant Hawkeyes job. That meeting changed the course of Iowa and the Big Ten forever.

Picking Iowa

The Hawkeyes had become a college football wasteland. Iowa hadn’t posted a winning season since 1961, and from 1970-78, the Hawkeyes were 25-71-2. Yet with a strong fan base continuing to fill Kinnick Stadium, Elliott tapped the confident, loquacious Texan to reverse the generational decline.

Fry held a news conference on Dec. 10, 1978, and vowed to change the culture.

“We will be colorful, tough, and we will have exciting football,” Fry said that day, as reported by the Cedar Rapids Gazette. “I’ve always been a passing coach. We throw the football to open up the defense so we can do what we want to do — run the football.

“We may run the Statue of Liberty play out of the end zone; that’s my style of football. We are exciting, but we do this in order to win.”

In the Hawkeyes’ home opener, the Hawkeyes faithful gave Fry and his team a standing ovation as they shifted into multiple formations. Iowa blew a 26-3 lead in a 30-26 loss to Indiana, which was coached by Lee Corso. The following week, Iowa traveled to Oklahoma and competed against the mighty Sooners and Heisman Trophy-winning running back Billy Sims, but still lost 21-6.

In what initially seemed like a moral victory, Fry, a psychology major at Baylor, saw it differently.

“I just told my football team that’s what’s wrong with our ball club,” Fry said, as reported by the Cedar Rapids Gazette. “We get our asses kicked and we get complimented. If I see one guy with a smile on his face, I’m gonna bust him right in the mouth.”

Iowa finished 5-6 in his first year and 4-7 in 1980. Still, the vibe had changed around the program entering his third season.

“I think people sensed that Hayden was different, that the program he brought was different than what they had seen before,” said Alvarez, then the Iowa linebackers coach. “We were very competitive.”

Fry wanted to change the image of Iowa football as much as the on-field product. He gained permission from the Pittsburgh Steelers to pattern the Hawkeyes’ black-and-gold uniforms in a similar fashion. He opted for a different logo on the helmet, so he solicited ideas from fans and partnered with an advertising firm. After a weekend of sketches, Bill Colbert of Three Arts Advertising in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, designed the TigerHawk.

“From where I come from, it’s called selling the sizzle before the steak,” Fry said.

The players were instructed to enter and leave the playing field in a “Swarm” formation, which signifies both the team aspect and also was designed to prevent energy burnout.

Fry also had the Kinnick Stadium visiting locker room walls painted pink because he considered it a passive color. For 40 years, different teams have papered every inch of the locker room to try to alter its effects on their players. When Iowa faced a tough opponent, Fry was loose with his players and quarreled with media over trivial matters to deflect attention. When the Hawkeyes played an inferior opponent, Fry drilled his players like a taskmaster.

“He was a wonderful head coach,” said Phil Haddy, a member of Iowa’s sports information department from 1971-2011. “He was a wonderful administrator. At the same time, a huckster. He could sell tickets. He was good. Whenever he went to a press conference, I’d go up and visit with him first. He’d always be sour. ‘It’s not in my contract. I don’t have to do these things.’ When he’d walk into the room, every week, ‘How y’all doing?’ He’d be smiling. He’d be 110 percent professional.

“He was a dying breed. He did everything. He sold tickets. He coached. He got everybody interested in things. He did it all. Today, the coaches want to coach. Hayden would go to I-Clubs and he’d get there early and he’d stay late and shook every hand. Hayden was a one-of-a-kind. He’s the king.”

During the farming crisis in 1985, Fry had a sticker with the initials “ANF — America Needs Farmers” placed on Iowa’s helmets. He also sang and danced “The Hokey Pokey” in the locker room after victories and wore white pants and sunglasses on the sidelines.

“I’m not sure there’s another person alive who could come in and accomplish what he did in terms of turning things around, changing attitudes,” Ferentz said in a previous interview. “The impact he had, not just on the program, but the entire state was just unbelievable.”

Magical year

In 1981, Fry finally had a team that could match his marketing. With a defense that still sits among the best in school history, the Hawkeyes stopped No. 6 Nebraska 10-7 in the opener. Two weeks later, Iowa beat No. 6 UCLA 20-7.

“Gee whiz, how about that!” Fry said afterward. “We got two of the top 10. How sweet it is!”

With a 9-7 upset over defending Big Ten champion and No. 5-ranked Michigan and a 33-7 win against Purdue to stop a 20-game losing streak to the Boilermakers, Fry finally pushed Iowa to its elusive winning season.

“Waaa-hooo,” Fry yelled when he met with reporters. “Twenty cotton-picking years, and we finally did it. We had a great opportunity to fold our tent for the season after last week (a loss to Illinois) and we didn’t do it.”

Entering the regular-season finale, Iowa needed Ohio State to beat Michigan and then topple Michigan State to reach the Rose Bowl. By the third quarter, word of Ohio State’s victory reached Kinnick Stadium. The Hawkeyes crushed the Spartans 36-7 to claim a share of its first Big Ten title since 1958 and earn a trip to Pasadena.

“It was a group of young men that were very hungry, been kicked around, had a hard time,” Fry said on one of his final trips to Iowa City. “To see them win the Big Ten championship was one of the highlights of my career.

“They hadn’t had a winning season in 19 seasons and psychologically, I had a great advantage because they were easy to motivate. They were told they couldn’t win, and they were determined to show people that they could.”

Starting safety Bob Stoops, who later became a national championship-winning head coach at Oklahoma, said Fry’s motivation was what propelled the Hawkeyes to the Rose Bowl.

“He had swagger. He projected confidence,” Stoops said during an Iowa City appearance. “That’s what we needed at the time at Iowa. We’re like, ‘You know what, we can beat anyone.’ Hayden gave us that swagger and that attitude, and I’ve always remembered it.”

The Hawkeyes became a formidable Big Ten program for the rest of the decade. In 1985, Iowa was ranked No. 1 nationally for five consecutive weeks. In the first No. 1 vs. No. 2 game in Big Ten history, the Hawkeyes beat Michigan on a game-winning field goal on the game’s final play. The Hawkeyes won the Big Ten title outright and earned another trip to Pasadena. His quarterback, Chuck Long, was a two-time consensus All-American quarterback and finished second in Heisman Trophy voting that year.

“Hayden was disciplined, but he made it fun,” Long said. “There’s times you don’t want to even go to practice because it’s drudgery and it’s mundane. It was never mundane under Hayden Fry. Every day you’re like, ‘What he’s going to say next?’ You couldn’t wait to get to practice because it was so much fun. Now we worked hard. We worked extremely hard, but we always had fun. I think that’s a special trait.

“We ended with what we called a cheer. It was on the script. Cheer. C-h-e-e-r. So he gathered up the team, whether it was a good practice or a bad practice and said cheer. Led us with a story or a joke. Something funny and end on a good note every day. Regardless of how the practice went.”

In 1990, Fry took the Hawkeyes to the Rose Bowl for the final time. A year later, Iowa finished 10-1-1, the school’s best single-season record under the coach. Twice, Fry’s teams finished in the top 10 and placed in the top 25 eight other times. From 1981-91, only Michigan won more league and bowl games among Big Ten teams than Iowa.

Fry’s 143 wins were the most in school history until Ferentz passed him in 2018 and rank sixth all time among Big Ten coaches. Fry’s 96 league victories are fifth, one shy of Ferentz.

“Coach Fry probably doesn’t get enough credit for just the impact he had on this entire conference, let alone our program,” Ferentz said.

Legacy

Fry’s coaching tree is what defines him outside of Iowa. His first offensive coordinator was Snyder, the architect of the sport’s greatest turnaround at Kansas State. Alvarez, who achieved similar success at Wisconsin, coached the linebackers until 1986. Both are in the College Football Hall of Fame.

Joining them in the hall of fame one day will be Stoops, who was 190-48 in 18 seasons at Oklahoma with 10 Big 12 titles and a national championship in 2000. Ferentz coached Iowa’s offensive line and has 161 wins at Iowa. Defensive line coach Dan McCarney has the most victories in Iowa State history.

“Coach Fry would say, ‘If I had one particular skill, it was probably my ability to judge who to hire,’” said Patterson, who is one victory shy of becoming Western Illinois’ all-time wins leader. “He always famously said, ‘I won’t hire coaches who don’t have an interest in being head coaches.’ That wasn’t always true. (Defensive coordinator) Bill Brashier had opportunities to be a head coach and passed them up to stay at Iowa. I think it generally was true.”

In 2018, Mark Stoops guided Kentucky to a 10-win season for only the third time in school history. Bielema took Wisconsin to three consecutive Big Ten titles from 2010 through 2012.

“The day he retired, he came into my office and he sat and he said some really cool things,” Bielema said. “He wrote me a letter that I carry in my planner to this day and said ‘You’re a good coach, you’re going to be a head coach someday, make sure you’re prepared when you get there.’ I was crying my eyes out because the biggest mentor in my life was retiring.”

Fry’s legacy within Iowa encompasses all of his accomplishments. The football complex around Kinnick Stadium is named for Fry. In Coralville, First Avenue was renamed Hayden Fry Way. In 2009, FryFest debuted, which celebrates everything associated with Iowa athletics. In 2016, Fry’s bronze likeness was unveiled with a 6-foot statue. Fry, then 87, made his final public appearance and smiled, waved and spoke before a crowd of about 800. In typical Fry fashion, Fry offered up a quip before the statue was unveiled.
