Henry felt the blood rushing up to his cheeks as he took on the full sight of the man in front of him, which was pretty much... there, since he was wearing next to nothing to cover himself much. “Oh God, no. I hardly think that would’ve been wise at all, love” he said with a soft chuckle, then blushed even harder when the man making the announcement referred to the redhair man as his ‘toy to play with’. As much as that line sent a brand new of blood rushing down to his groin, it also made him a bit nervous. What if he screwed up all the fun to begin with? From all apparences, the other man looked like someone who knew what he was doing, and the last thing Henry wanted was to be a poor experience to him.

Licking his lips slightly, Henry stepped closer to the other man. “I think we’d be much more comfortable room. The door hasn’t been painted on yet, but maybe it will be a matter of time before it does” he said, throwing in a playful wink at him, then took his own jacket off and placed it on top of the other man’s shoulders. “Is that better? Come on then.” He took his hand and they walked out of the room, surrounded by a chorus of wolf whistling. Henry kept quiet all the way up to his room, where Chuck, his personal bodyguard stood at the door. With a little nod, he gave the larger man know he had to give them some privacy, to which he simply went to stand on the floor below, at the foot of the stairs. Once they were inside his room, he turned around and smiled at the other. “Much better. Now...” He offered his hand out to him. “I’m Henry. What’s your name? Apollo? Mars? Whatever other Greek god I can think of?” he said, chuckling softly.

This is maybe an odd question, but do we know what the people then sounded like? They're always portrayed with posh British accents, but surely Richard III must have sounded northern, Henry VII french, etc?

Hi, anon! There's a video exemplifying how Richard III's Middle English pronunciation would have sounded here. As to regional accents, I'm not sure how they would have worked. I'm not very familiar with Richard III's childhood and formal education—I know he stayed in Middleham (in the North) from age 13 to 16, but I don't know where he was staying before or after that period. Childhood aside he spent a lot of time in the North still as a young man in his twenties up until he was 30. He might have developed an accent but I'm really not a specialist to tell.

Henry VII's accent is even more confusing to tell. He grew up in Wales from his birth up to age 13—it's reasonable to say he'd have a Welsh accent as a boy/young teenager but we also know Henry had Oxford-trained tutors that specifically trained him in grammar so would they have influenced his accent? Did people even care about regional accents at that time for his tutors to pay attention to it? He went over to Brittany as a 14-year-old so let's consider that he spoke French regularly for the following decade: how much did speaking a different language influence his way of speaking his own native tongue? It probably impacted it in some way.

From personal experience, having to speak another language for years messes up your native grammar/syntax and it influences the pronunciation of certain punctual words but not so much the overall flow/cadence of speaking. However, other people have had different experiences from mine. Another thing to bear in mind is that Henry would be speaking English solely with his uncle Jasper and Jasper had grown up in a convent in London before being brought up at court—he would have had a 'royal' (posh?) accent most likely or whatever was closest to that at the time. I think that hearing English from one (1) person for so long would have impacted Henry and his pronunciation as well. In the end, Henry VII probably had a mix of different accents by 1485.

In terms of media portrayals, I agree it would be interesting to have them speak in different regional accents. All I can think of is the most recent Sky docuseries where Henry VII had a thick French accent and Jasper for once didn't have a Welsh one (like he had in The Shadow of the Tower for example). I'm not sure Henry VII would have had such a strong French accent because of the reasons I cited above (original Welsh accent, conversation with his posh uncle for years, etc) but it's better to hear some different accent than none and have everyone speaking in the same RP accent 🌹x

A short summary of ‘British’ accents in tsc, for anyone confused

I decided to make this post some time ago after it was said kit will be moving to Devon, because I could just see the “OMG kits got a sexy British accent” posts on the horizon. In fact, the British Accent is a theme I see often on tumblr, and the misunderstanding surrounding it is quite frustrating. But it’s also made me realise that a lot of people don’t seem to know much about the UK? So I thought this would be a cute idea.

So here we are! This is an English class folks.

Let’s start with the most important point — the ‘British Accent’ isn’t real, because the phrase ‘British’ would imply everyone in England, Scotland and Wales speaks like that. Accents change literally from town to town in some cases, so this is definitely not true. I know many like to believe because the UK is small we all sound the same and drink tea with the queen, but that’s not the case.

What you mean by ‘British Accent’ is likely actually something called Recieved Pronunciation, or RP for short. RP was first developed for BBC broadcasting years ago and is designed to sound posh and clear so those listening could make sense of it, as well as giving the radio station a uniform sound as all workers were taught to speak RP (some schools taught it also, many also calling it Queen’s English). So the only people who sound like the Queen are the upper class, because they were really the only ones to care about RP and it’s kinda stuck.

The other equivalent to the “British Accent” is probably a posher Southern English accent, like Tom Hiddleston or Benedict Cumberbatch. Again, that’s not a regular occurrence, and is definitely another example of RP filtering into higher society. In fact, I’ve never heard someone irl speak like that.

So what are the more likely accents of British tsc characters, if they don’t all sound like the Queen?

We’ll go through in bullet points, shall we?

Will — he’s Welsh. I don’t know much about Welsh accents since I’ve never been there (if any welsh people wanna jump in here go ahead) but I’ve met enough people from Wales to tell you that they also do not sound like the Queen. Will’s accent might have changed a little with him living in London for almost a decade, but probably not much, and Cecily will likely have quite a thick Welsh accent since she grew up there.

Charlotte, Henry, the tid Lightwoods etc — I don’t remember if it is said they were from different areas or all born and raised in London, but if that’s the case then the accent comes down to where they lived in London (again, I can’t remember). From their status among the Shadowhunters and therefore the city, I’d say they are the most likely to sound like the posh “British Accent” although RP wasn’t well known until later and they aren’t upper class mundanes, so even that’s iffy.

The Starkweathers — the Starkweathers we see in tid are from York. York is in the North of England, and so off the bat their accent is very different to the Southern characters. The Yorkshire accent itself is interesting and I don’t really know how to explain it other than glottal stops are a thing and some letters just don’t exist anymore in verbal communication. But I can say it is definitely not posh lmao. We don’t talk posh up north. **EDIT: I literally just remembered game of thrones is a thing wow listen to Jon Snow speak, or even better that ginger lass he hangs with in one of the earlier seasons**

Annabel and her family, possibly Malcolm also — Annabel is from Cornwall. I can’t remember where Malcolm is from but I know he lived with her there, so he likely picked up on parts of the accent too. Again, I’ve never been that end of the country, but Cornwall is also in the West Country, just below Devon. I imagine there are slight differences in the accent as there is everywhere, but that it is still mainly the same (I live in the north east, so while my accent is mainly the same as everyone else in the north east there are still small differences in my accent and the accent of the towns like half an hour from me). I went into more detail about the West Country accent below, so I’ll leave it there. But in summary, still not RP.

Finally, Kit. Obviously Kit isn’t from England, but I’ve seen a lot of speculation that the move to Devon will give him a ~Sexy British AccentTM~ and that is really what sparked this post. For a start, although Kit will possibly pick up some slang or a slight accent, I personally doubt his accent will change much in the few years he’s there before twp. But for those who like to think it will: Devon is in the West Country, the very South West of England. They have quite a specific accent, and some might say it sounds a little pirate-like as @kit-herondale-blackthorn said, although this is mainly down to the curled ‘r’ sound (they don’t actually sound exactly like stereotypical pirates). Again, that accent is absolutely nothing like RP, so if Kit is to develop a “British Accent” it will be the Devon accent, not the Queen’s or Benedict Cumberbatch’s.

I think that’s everyone? I didn’t mention Jem because although I imagine he has a slight English twang he was of course raised in Shanghai so I don’t know how those two accents would mix.

ever since his true brother, alexander, was legitimised by the pope, richard has been constantly asking why such a thing hasn’t happened to himself. is he not good enough? is alexander simply better suited to the role? richard can’t answer it for himself, and so goes to florence with his family to find his answers and to find allies who may help him, in turn, to become legitimised - though, in reality, he’d probably prefer being kept as a bastard to the king and queen of england.  is well versed in music and spends his time with his lute when alone after a day of playing the king’s bastard. behind such loud and obnoxious behaviour, he can be rather soft and finds himself writing poetry rather than practising warfare.  richard fitzroy fathered a child a mere two weeks ago! the babe is healthy and though richard knew of the pregnancy he will only find out about the birth once he enters the RP aka once the announcement arrives via a letter - “edmund fitzrichard-howard was born by mary howard, an english daughter of the earl of somerset and richard fitzroy, the son of the king” something like that.  he has serious commitment issues, can’t understand why anyone would want to miss out on the various types of people in the world, and at the sprightly age of twenty-three clearly has developed a taste for violence and booze.  is a lover of finer things instead, and proudly boasts of his parentage to his peers.  likes to play at warfare but if he were to truly take his stance on the frontline of a war he would shriek with terror - for a boy born into the english court is barely ever exposed to such labour and has a little understanding of the true lives lived by englishmen in the grit and mud.  born to parents who were always very much in love richard should’ve been brought up to respect the true power of love and what it may do to a boy like himself; but love never entered the equation for richard, named after his maternal grandfather! he threw love affairs away, seeing romantic choices as playthings

🤕 🏰 + Any other magical lore bits you’d like to share: what other types of magical beings live in the universe you’ve built?

🤕 = Has your character obtained any unique or important injuries/scars, what are they and what are they from?Elwyn has a lot of scars and injury stories. But easily his most prominent? The ‘legs’.When Elwyn was younger, his brother Bedwyr and him were playing by the lake - a joke led to the younger tumbling into the water. Elwyn, ever the worrier, dived in after his brother, only to become ensnared in the enchanted weeds of the lake, designed to kill those who ventured into murky waters. He struggled violently, and to this day has red tinged marks wrapped around both legs, a lasting residue from what was essentially a magic burn. They move, very much a part of his body with free will - sometimes gathering close to his ankles, others curling around his arms and licking his neck. For a long time, they were a memory of his brothers death in those cold waters, of watching him die before his parents managed to pull the children out. Now, however, he is fond of the curling scars - they’re almost like pets, and very reflective of his mood.(He also has two small scars on his neck from a vampire bite that bonded him with his familiar, and Elwyn can often be seen idly touching the rough skin when deep in thought or talking to Guinevere.)

🏰 = Does your character feel any connection with the land/country they were born in, what sort of connection?

YES. Elwyn’s home village of Laugharne, located deep in the Welsh countryside, is special to him and his family. Years before, during the witch trials, a select 13 from the family offered themselves as sacrifice, dying at the hands of the witch-hunters: it was with their dying breaths the group placed a spell of protection on the others in the family, and for them to find a land of safety that was protected from those who wished them harm.

Those escaping family members ran across Wales with the hunters in pursuit. Eventually, they stumbled across a stunningly large fairy ring, approximately ½ a mile wide. On a whim, and with the families ‘curse’ to protect them, they settled in the ring - and with this location came both immense power from those who died and the rings energy, allowing the village to become a safe haven that, to this day, is impossible to find to those who mean harm. Elwyn adores the story and heavily prays to those witches who saved his family, and his magic stems almost entirely from this and the grounds. 

On a smaller level? He feels connected to it simply because it’s home. His family live there, his shop, miles of forest and a little cliff edge and beach - it’s perfect for someone like him.

Any other magical lore bits you’d like to share: what other types of magical beings live in the universe you’ve built?

Oh, I could write forever on the lore of the world: but I’ll try my best not to ramble! 

As to what types of magical beings live there: Almost any. I try hard to include a range of different takes on creatures and stories from a lot of different parts of the world, and run on the thesis almost anything is possible - for brevity, I’m going to focus on a few from the book’s main (Ish) characters.

Firstly, witches. I write there as being several different types of witches - White witches as with the Gwyn family, Human witches as in humans with no power who attempt the potions (Often, they have unknown distant magical blood), Voodoo as seen with New Orleans born Voodoo mother Zoe Le Bonne, Dark magic/witches as with Henry too. I want to note that ‘dark’ magic is not, in fact, evil magic - simply one that taps in to stronger urges and requires more sacrifice such as witching blood. It can be used for as much good as bad, as with all magic types. There’s more, but those are the first to mind!

Then, obviously, vampires. Non-aging, burns in sunlight, slight fangs - they take notes from traditional vampirism. Pale and drinking human blood, the main vampires in the book are the Cruor twins: an ‘identical’ brother and sister. They look human, and their vampire attributes are treated in a far more humanoid sense: garlic, onions, and other ‘non-vampiric’ things are akin to allergies, and sun is based on exposure. A few minutes? Fine, maybe 15 with thick sunscreen and long sleeves. Essentially, they develop a human sunburn, but it’s onset is much faster than a person. Some tights and sleeves with a parasol and sunscreen are more than enough to allow them to walk even on summer days for a while. The fangs are slightly longer incisor teeth, milk white skin, and normal eyes - no fancy colour changes. 

I’ll stop my descriptions there, but other creatures with their character I RP include: Forest sprites (Kester Driscoll), Changelings (Molly-Sage Elwood), Gargoyle’s (Clemente Donatelli), kalman väki/Finnish Death Elf (Kyösti Aalto/Driscoll), Warlocks (Distant blood in Ira Patel), Mami Wata/African Mermaid (Jessica Okoro), Ghosts (Hollie DeReign) and ‘children of the land’ - this is essentially a one in a generation child born with a connection to the protected land, able to sense threats and danger coming their way once they learn to decipher the visions and feelings (Newton Prince). Or course, plenty of other things exist, these are just the first to mind since these are all characters who get their chapter moments. 

Oh, and of course humans! Lot’s of those!

Team Work || Henlex (August 16)

After almost a month since classes started, Henry found himself going into a nice, comfortable sense of healthy routine, that reminded him a lot to his days at St. Andrews, which were ones of the most enjoyable he had in his life, so far. He liked putting his most on every class he got to attend, to keep his work updated, and what makes him the happiest was that, in that place, he was just another student, and that relaxed him a great deal, to be considered like a regular, annonymous person, even if, the moment he stepped outside the campus gates, he went back to being this public person, whose home, Kensington Palace, was always surrounded by papparazzi, always hungry to get some news on him, or anyone from the Royal Family.

On the other hand, his interaction with Alex had reduced to basic greetings whenever they happened to run into each other at some point, and when they did, he could feel the dislike pouring from his eyes when he looked at him, as if he was this awful person, who had done him the greatest harm. Many times did Henry feel the urge to grab Alex by the shoulder and ask him what the hell was his problem with him, but he feared he would only make things worst. So he let it be. Day in, day out.

On that day, they had History of Politics class, and it was one of Henry's favorite units. He had devoured every book of history he had back home, and now it was time to make the most of that. The professor in charge of that unit entered the classroom and went straight to his desk. "Good morning, students. Today, we're doing class a little bit different. You will all be paired up with a fellow classmate, and you will be spending the next hour planning what will become your essay for the end of the term. The subject will be based on the politics that surrounded the time of World War II. We will be drawing your names, which are written on these pieces of papers, and luck will decide who will be your partner for this project."
