Siri, Play Unholy by Sam Smith!!!
This is just a little snippet of a fic doing, AU!Henry being a Greek God! Little Game I want you guys to play though, Which God is he exactly?!
Hint: He is one of Zeus’ infidelity children
Aurelia rolled her eyes after he stood up straight once again. ‘Are you gonna—‘ then the sound of metal crunching and bending disturbed her.
‘What the fuck?!’
She looked up to see that he’d began to pull the metal roof off of the car. He did it like it was nothing! Like peeling off a sticker! Then he tossed it to the side like a frisbee!
Aurelia’s brown eyes followed the flying piece of metal. ‘Remarkable!’ She said to herself. He then walked to the passenger’s side and appeared to analyze the spot. Even for a suv as big as this one, he would be very uncomfortable.
‘Hmmm.’
He hummed and opened the back door and hopped in. The car sunk with his weight. Damn, how big was he?!
Aurelia swallowed her spit and pulled her seat belt over her abdomen and clipped it in. ‘Alright, seatbelt please? Safety first.’ She turned around half way and he just stared at her with his head falling to the side a little.
He looked… confused…perplexed..
She looked down at his lap; noticing that his thighs had almost occupied the whole entire back seat.
A seatbelt couldn’t protect him if it wanted.
‘Allllright then. Nevermind.’ She murmured and put the car in drive. ‘Let’s go then.’

Does Apollo have alternate parentage? You know like how Dionysus has demeter nd Persephone as his mother in some versions.
Yes, but they come from concepts that greatly deviate from what we consider mainstream myths. One of them is him being the son of Zeus and Hera, according to the Egyptians:
Tumblr media
Diodorus Siculus, Library 1.13. (trans. Charles Henry Oldfather)
Obviously this account is based on the strong syncretism between Greek and Egyptian deities. Another account given by Cicero is based on the concept that there are multiple deities of the same name:
Tumblr media
Cicero, Nature of the gods (trans. Charles Duke Yonge)
This was apparently believed among people who thought gods were defied mortals. So every now and then a mortal got defied into a particular god. Cicero has also recorded different parentages for other deities, like Artemis, Athena, Hephaestus and so on. (On a different note, there's a similar concept in Hinduism too where the names of the gods are actually titles that any deserving human can attain. For ex: Indra is the king of the gods. But anyone can be Indra as long as they fulfill certain criteria. To see such a practice/belief in the worship of Greek deities is very interesting.)

My Genderbent Percy Jackson Names ideas!
Hold on tight cause this could get long
Percy Jackson —> Penelope Jackson
Ive seen a lot of takes where persephone is used and while i could see sally or Poseidon naming him that as a way to appease hades and try and avoid his wrath, i like Sally choosing the name of someone who got a happy ending. Penelope in greek mythology faces a lot of hardships but in the end she did get her happy ending. I also feel like Penelope being married to one of Athena’s favourite champions goes well with Penny Jackson falling for one of Athena‘s favourite sons. Also this Penelope choosing to follow her boyfriend on his perilous journey (ie. Falling into Tartartus with him) than being separated from him like the original Penelope was.
Jason Grace —> Helen Grace
Doesn’t start with the same letter but i wanted a name relating to greek mythology that i could think of reasons for. Ican see multiple ways Helen would end up with her name
1. Beryl Grace names her that out of pride. She seduces the king of gods and now she has a daughter just as beautiful as the original Helen.
2. Helen Grace does actually look a lot like Helen of Troy and was named by zeus/Jupiter for the resemblance
3. Hera, the goddess of marriage and women, maybe not being as hateful of Helen of Troy because she’s one of Zeus’ demigod daughters and not a demigod son. Also the original Helen having tumultuous marriages (depending on which version you go by) just like Hera who’s husband is about as unfaithful as you get. I could see Helen becoming one of her fave demigods and wanting to honour her by naming this new child after her. Or again Zeus naming her for that reason.
4. Helen of Troy was used in an insult against Hera so Hera being like ‘fuck you this is the new Helen, she’s gonna turn out much better than the original and she’s all mine’.
Also Helen Grace ending up in a kind of forced relationship with a son of Aphrodite.
Nico Di Angelo —> Viviana Di angelo or Mirabella Di Angelo or Rosa Di angelo
This one I’m not as decisive on, but i tried to find some italian/latin names that could be shortened to a nick name
Viviana means lively. Can be shortened to Viv. I could see this as a sort of contrast to her being the daughter of god of the dead but also Nico going through a lot of shit but surviving.
Mirabella means wonderous beauty and admiral which i think Nico is. Could be shortened to Mira or Bella.
Rosa is just a name that was popular in 1930s italy.
Also Benedetto for Bianca
Annabeth Chase —> Anthony Chase
The chase family tends to go with long posh sounding names so i thought this went well. Means praise worthy. I could also see Alexander after Alexander the Great but i don’t like giving deep meanings to every single name.
Piper McClean —> Presley McClean
Chose this because it was one of the only male P names that i liked to be honest, but Piper’s dad is famous and famous people tend to give their kids stand outish, meaningful names so maybe Presley was named after Elvis or something like that.
Frank Zhang —> Freya Zhang
Also just liked this one. Could be Francesca (no clue if i spelled that name right lol).
Leo Valdez —> Leah Valdez
Closest name to Leo i could think of.
Hazel Levesque —> Henry Levesque
Just a popular 1920s boy name starting with H.
Thalia Grace —> Hector Grace
I chose Hector because Hector of Troy was the greatest warrior for Troy and i think Zeus would want his son named after a great warrior. Before you say ‘but Hector was defeated by Achilles so shouldn’t he be named after Achilles’ I think even Zeus might think twice about naming the possible child of the prophecy after someone that had to be shot down because he was getting out of control. I don’t know if it rolls of the tongue as easily as Thalia Grace but i also thought it went nicely with Helen.

WHAT I THINK THE M&I CAST ARE IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY:
Allison: Athena ( Goddess of: Wisdom, warfare, strategist.)
Thomas: Hephaestus ( God of: Fire, forge, invention and master of craftsmen)
Sammy: Apollo ( God of: Music, light, poetry, etc.)
Doc: Nemesis ( Goddess of: Vengeance and retribution)
Wally: Gelos (God of: laughter)
Grant: COEUS ( Titan god of : Intelligence and curiosity)
Susie: Aphrodite (Goddess of: love, desire and beauty)
Johnny: Astraea ( Goddess of: Innocence and Justice)
Norman: Irene/Eirene ( Goddess of: Peace and patience)
Henry: Eleos ( God of: mercy, clemency, compassion and pity)
Lacie: Artemis ( Goddess: Midwifery, protector of young children, childbirth, etc)
Tayln: Could not think of one..:")
Nelly: Persephone ..or Adonis.. ( Goddess of: Reincarnation and ghosts)
Jamie: Eusebeia ( God of : loyalty, duty ,etc)
Valeria: Could not think of one here either
Kameela: Kratos ( God of: authority)
Aminata: Calliope ( Goddess of: singing. Name meaning beautiful voiced )
Wilson: Zeus ( God of : wrath, anger, etc)
Nathan: Hades ( god of: evil ,etc)
I know for some..aka ALOT.. there were some gods/godesses that didn't fit the characters gender ..REALLY SORRY.
Hope you liked it even though it was probably messed up XD
I would actually switch Wilson to Hades and Nathan to Zeus OR Poseidon just because they're absolute DICKS. I think I drew my Joey as a greek god at some point (Dolos, god of Lies) and surprisingly he's the only one you didn't mention LOL
I'd make Doc Asclepius (God of Medicine). He used to be a human or rather a demi-god because he's the son of Apollo and a mortal woman Koronis (or Coronis), princess of Tricca in Thessaly. When he died, he was resurrected as a God! Also he brought a little bit too many people from the dead lol.
Then I'd make Talyn Thanatos (God/Personification of Death) because I'm quirky like that
and Valeria can be Psyche (the Goddess of the Soul, more known as Eros' wife. She's portrayed with butterfly wings hehe uvu)
I imagine Nelly to "Pomegranate Lips" by Derivakat a lot, so YES, SHE'S PERSEPHONE
Also Nightmare Joey is Erebus (God/Personification of Darkness), that's it.
UPD: I JUST NOTICED THAT YOU ONLY MENTIONED THAT HADES IS THE GOD OF "EVIL" WHEN HE IS ABSOLUTELY NOT!
God, I really don't like when people associate him with evil. Mostly because people associate him with the Devil, coz they both rule "The Underworld". BUT HADES IS SO MUCH MORE! He welcomes and homes the dead, they're all equal in his kingdom. He's also the only one of the 3 ruling gods (him, zeus and poseidon) who isn't an absolute asshole to his wife. He was always passive and never portrayed negatively (except abduction of Persephone, but that was Zeus' idea + being angry at people trying to resurrect the dead or cheat death ((Orpheus almost got away with it because Persephone is nice)).
TL;DR MY BOY HADES IS GOOD AND IS NOT AND WAS NEVER MENTIONED TO BE THE GOD OF EVIL.
UPD2: AND ZEUS ISN'T THE GOD OF WRATH/ANGER. He may be a dick, but it was never mentioned that he's a god of Wrath and/or Anger. That's Ares, also known as the God of War. Please, check your sources!

Perseus Starting from the Cave of the Gorgons
c. 1816
Artist:
Attributed to Henry Fuseli
Swiss, active in England, 1741-1825
Fuseli’s unfinished painting depicts the ancient Greek hero Perseus, son of Zeus, a demigod who slew Medusa, the snake-haired Gorgon whose glance turned men to stone. On the ground lies the decapitated body of Medusa, above which the airborne Perseus flees with her head, which retained its deadly power. Medusa’s two sisters, at right, unsuccessfully attempt to stop Perseus.
The painting’s source was the ancient Greek poet Hesiod’s the Shield of Heracles (translated into English in 1815), an imagined description in verse of the scenes found on Heracles’s beautifully crafted shield, including Perseus slaying Medusa.

Okay so let's talk about the picture of Dorian gray and it's links with Greek stuff specifically with Narcissus
The story of Narcissus has technically three parts the first being the story of when Narcissus's mother went to Tiresias and he told told Leiriope (Narcissus's mother) that her son would enjoy a long life as long as he never knew himself or saw his reflection. The second part is the more famous one of Narcissus and Echo and the story is fairly simple Echo is in love with the very beautiful Narcissus who only really loves himself (Shocker Ik) but even though she can form a lovely confession to him he still rejects her leaving her to hide in caves and forests. The second part is the story of Narcissus and Ameinias and just like Echo, Ameinias a young man falls in love with Narcissus and confessed but Narcissus yk being himself rejected him in the worst possible way ever by sending him a sword and tells him to yk kill himself which he does whilst invoking Nemesis aka the goddess of revenge or divine retribution however it works and she sees what has happened to everyone who has confessed to him so one day while Narcissus is hunting he sees a spring and happens to catch a glimpse of himself and falls in love with it and never leaves to spring simply watching himself in the water (Now this is just one version there are others but this is my favorite) but soon enough Narcissus’ despair over his self-love and his belief that he suffered justly for his harsh treatment of Ameinias leads him to kill himself and his blood causes a flower to sprout appropriately being the Narcissus.
Now I skipped over a few things 1 being character traits I mean come on with that summary anyone would be justified in thinking Narcissus was in the right.
Let's start with Narcissus.
Narcissus: throughout both story's he is well a narcissist he is self-absorbed and egotistical
Echo: rather helpful to Zeus and clever considering how she pieced together lies for Zeus and sentences for Narcissus
And finally Ameinias: we don't have much on him as he was a recent discovery but we can assume he was a rather determined but more fragile character overall.
Now as for The picture of Dorian gray
The picture of Dorian gray is one of my favorite books ever (in fact I just got a copy I have been waiting for)
The book is a novel by Oscar Wilde, about a young man named Dorian Gray who has his portrait painted by a friend. The portrait becomes cursed, so that as Dorian ages, the portrait retains his youthful beauty. Dorian leads a life of pleasure and debauchery, through out the book he becomes increasingly selfish and irresponsible, committing various vices such as gambling and womanizing. Meanwhile, his portrait becomes more and more hideous as it ages, but Dorian remains forever young. The painting is eventually destroyed and Dorian is left to face the consequences of his actions.
Now on to the characters obliviously there are more characters in this book then the story's about Narcissus's
Here's a short summary of the main characters in "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and their basic characteristics:
Dorian Gray: he is young and handsome and although at first somewhat innocent becomes increasingly selfish and well narcissistic
Basil Hallward: A painter who is also one of Dorian's closest friends, Basil is the one who paints Dorian's portrait. He becomes increasingly horrified by Dorian's lifestyle (he is also totally in love him Dorian)
Lord Henry Wottount: A debauched aristocrat who is a bad influence on Dorian, Lord Henry encourages him to pursue a life of hedonism and excess.
Sybil Vane: Dorian's first girlfriend, a poor but talented actor, Sybil is initially appalled by Dorian's superficiality.
Alan Campbell: A rival of Dorian's for Sybil's affection
James Vane: Sybil's estranged husband and Alan's brother, and I won't give anymore spoliers
As you can see there are more then a few similarities between the two
And for the TLDR- In ancient Greek mythology, Narcissus was a young man who became so enamored with his own reflection in a pool of water that he fell in love with it and eventually wasted away. Similarly, in "The Picture of Dorian Gray," Dorian Gray's youthful beauty is preserved on a painting that he becomes obsessed with, leading him to a life of hedonism and sin. This obsessive love of his own image eventually results in his downfall, much as Narcissus's infatuation with his own reflection led to his death. Both stories serve as cautionary tales about the dangers of self-obsessions and focusing too much on one's own appearance and beauty.

BIO
(cult mention, abuse mention)
Elias was born during a devastating storm, the skies had been ablaze, the winds had been so quick on their feet they'd taken no prisoners in their path of destruction. His mother, a prisoner of sorts in a life she didn't choose and yet accepted, because she was born into it and didn't know better. Her parents' parents had already lived in these lands and had been proud members of a rather small and yet, incredibly radical cult that believed in witchcraft and the influence of the moon on the mind.
The circumstances of Elias' birth ended life for the newborn before it began. He was found a bad omen, a lost child and declared enemy of the 'new religious movement' of the Dark Rose. Usually, children like him would be discarded, but his family was part of the group of the founders of their community, so when Elias' mother begged for her son's life, they granted him ....that. But only that. Not more. And a lot less. As to not spread misfortune on the others, he was held separate from the other newborn, in a room far off.
As he grew older and began to escape from his crib, the leaders sat down to talk about his fate once more. His mother hadn't seen him in months and yet, she - again, pleaded for his life. So, the toddler was put in a cage in the dog shed. He was fed and he was groomed with the dogs, but he was alive. Some time later, a collar and shackles were added to ensure he couldn't escape the shed when they let out the dogs. Elias grew up without a name, without purpose, without a guardian in his life to show him the way. At best, he thought he was a dog and he'd never be more than that. Even the dogs had names..
He never was taught proper speech, only enough to understand basic commands, though he did pick up bits and pieces of the spoken word, but ... it made only little sense to the boy. Full moon nights and storms were the triggers Elias had to endure, because every single storm - or even bad weather was blamed on him and the full moon - they said, would have the demon within him at its strongest. For those nights, he was bound to a tree out in the forest for the entire night with only the cold and the full moon to keep him company.
During a police raid after several complaints from neighbors and anonymous calls hinting the big farm was used for drug trafficking, they found a ten year old boy with bright blue eyes and beautiful locks held in a kennel with other dogs.
They were shocked to see a boy of ten or eleven years held like a dog. He was taken to the youth welfare services in Manchester and ended up in the system for difficult to place kids due to his age and ...deficits. Adoption came with a price, therapy and responsibility to re-socialize him - his temporary name was Lukas.
Newspapers spoke about the wolf boy and an American family currently in town for business read about him. Their reputation was good, they were wealthy and pledged to pay for the extensive care the unnamed boy would need to find his way back into life. They stayed for a few months, but eventually returned home to the United States after paperwork on all ends was done.
The boy was named Elias Matthew Benjamin Hawkins.
The Hawkins owned an area by Toluca Lake - in the sunny Los Angeles. They already had a thirteen year old daughter when they invited Elias into their home. Mona Marie was hesitant at first, unwilling to share her parents with a strange boy, but she soon became protective of him, like the big sister he never had. The first year wasn't easy on anybody, but the Hawkins' were loving and gentle with the boy, they spent a little fortune on his therapy, his education and everything else he could have wished for and he worked hard, grateful for this life they offered.
A few years later, they had another daugther Sarah-Jane Louise to complete the family. (They have a thing for impressive names apparently.) That was around the time, Elias found out he .. wasn't normal. His parents handled it naturally and after a lot of wondering and then finally meeting his biological father, Elias was granted summers in Camp Halfblood - if only to learn how to control his powers.
Elias found his passion in computers, their software and hardware and went to college after graduating (only a year later than ordinary) from high school. His parents, of course, had no qualms about him striving to come far in life - build something of his own. He did.
Before he chose to follow the Call, Elias lived in his own house, not too far from home - in Venice Beach with a loft in Downtown LA as well to be closer to ihs workplace during the week. Putting work before everything else was Elias' standard setting, his ambition a constant driving force going hand in hand with his perfectionism. He never quite made it past the mental mindset that he owed his parents perfection. Success. All to repay the debt that could never be repaid.
Elias followed the call and relocated to Camp Halfblood, but instead of giving up everything he knew and loved (his work), he chose to bring it with. Surely there's wifi at Camp?

this is gonna be long-ish but a couple of days ago i saw a post by @voidstilesplease (which i now cannot find) about alex and henry's plausible godly parents, and it got me thinking. a lot. and this is what came out of it—!
▍ HENRY is pretty simple to me. in the book, alex makes a comparison between him and apollo and overall it's just too fitting to pass on. so i say he's a child of apollo.
now usually, while they are fairly powerful, most children of apollo's abilities tend to be specialized in one direction rather than consisting in a general set like other demigods. in henry's case, i imagine he'd excel in the arts (like all of his siblings) and have powers linked to speech/poetry/writing. so, like, he can curse others to only speak in rhyming couplets, but can also heal people by singing a hymn to his father (or through storytelling; that's something he worked hard on). aside from this, like any other child of apollo, he's good at physical contests and games and anything involving throwing or shooting stuff. so while archery or hoops etc. are not his main skill he's good enough if need be. also, fun fact: in very rare cases a child of apollo can possess some form of photokinesis, and i just know in my heart that alex was so peeved by henry at first that he thought that was the case and that he had this kind of rare power but was hiding it or something (untrue. alex was just crushing hard and i want my northern star reference).
another thing alex suspects and used to go off about is henry being a legacy of aphrodite. i can neither confirm nor deny this, personally, but wouldn't be opposed at the idea.
Tumblr media
▍ ALEX is way more tricky to me. my first guess was athena, but my issue with that is that nora is too much of an athena child herself and, well, we all know they dated briefly. even aside from that though, there's just something off to me. so, i bring options !
firstly, legacies. in my mind, both ellen and oscar are either demigods themselves or children of at least one demigod. this makes alex (and june) a legacy through ellen and possibly oscar! my reasoning for that is:
zeus: ellen claremont is so daughter/legacy of zeus coded it's insane. we know it's rare and that children of zeus hardly grow into adults without getting killed first. regardless, they are all naturally good leaders, as well as very ambitious and goal-oriented, and generally, they just have a very strong presence and a willful attitude.
mercury: oscar could be a child of mercury and one reason i like this a lot is alex's middle name. gabriel comes from his mexican heritage and was chosen in honor of the archangel gabriel, patron saint of diplomats, whose counterpart in roman mythology is mercury (or hermes, but mercury fits better imo). his children are usually cunning and nimble and very versatile in any skill, so basically “jacks-of-all-trades”. they excel in athletics as well as business (and, in hermes' case, thievery). they're fast and stealthy, and good with money. and of course, they can be very persuasive, thus making good spies and influencers. there's a great deal of charisma there.
so here's the deal. i can see two possibilities !
a) alex is ellen and oscar's biological son, thus a dual legacy.
as there is no fixed rule when it comes to demigods' children and how they inherit one, both, or neither parent's divine side (could be anything, according to riordan even a horse lol), i can see alex being mixed. he's so chaotic and lively and smart and charismatic and larger-than-life, he could embody traits from both zeus and mercury. it may be a bit less intense than if he was a first-generation demigod abilities-wise, but nothing to scoff at. it could also be interesting as legacies aren't usually treated the same as regular demigods, and the nature of their heritage and abilities is basically a game of chance when they are born, so i could see alex being a notorious, skilled, and passionate exponent of this minority.
b) alex is ellen's biological child (thus a legacy of zeus/jupiter, but with greatly reduced abilities derived from it in this case! it'd mostly just be his presence, really), his middle name is a nod to oscar's side of the family, but he was conceived with a god. as for which one, i'd suggest hephaestus.
hear me out! children of hephaestus are skilled builders and talented engineers. they can instinctively detect, identify, and operate any piece of machinery or metal. and in rare cases, they are blessed with the ability to create and control fire, or possibly even lava and volcanoes. in the book, june tells alex that he's got a fire under his ass, and he is shown to be clever, charismatic, restless and resourceful, as well as intense, headstrong, sometimes impulsive, and overall ablaze, in a way. to the point of burnout, if he goes on a tangent and is not careful. now, hephaestus blesses his children with this every few centuries, but i could see it here: the ability to create and control fire, in general, which is an extremely chaotic power that could burn anything near it no matter the intention, and the more fire is summoned and controlled, the more energy is drained. but i think it fits alex, he'd be careful and good with it. aside from the rest, that is.
Tumblr media
TL;DR. henry: son of apollo, possible legacy of aphrodite. alex: either active legacy of mercury and zeus or son of hephaestus and legacy of zeus/jupiter.

closed starter for: @alarickratoslocation: big house pool
being in the water proved to be a lot easier than flying in the sky. or in henry's case, trying to. maybe he should have been a son of poseidon instead. swimming was a far more enjoyable activity in his opinion. the blond kicked up and allowed his body to float for a bit, gaze set on the gray heavens above. after a minute or two, he found himself lost in thought about what to do next. camp was an entirely different world. a stark contrast to the one he was born and raised in. henry let out a sigh, unsure even where to start figuring out how to rescue a kidnapped deity. zeus has been anything but helpful lately, but perhaps liberating the king of the gods from his current predicament might result in a favorable outcome for the both of them.
only when he heard an all too familiar voice did henry snap back into reality. he was quick to swim over to the edge of the pool and greet his visitor. "don't tell me the great alaric fitzgerald is afraid of a little water," the english royal teased with a cheeky grin. "aren't you going to join me?"

The Snake Symbol via @galadrieljones, Part 1
@frangipanilove:
I’d love to hear more about your thoughts on the snake symbolism. I personally don’t feel like I have a good grasp at exactly what it means, and I’m certainly open to other interpretations.
I agree that it likely is tied to evil somehow, after all that’s how snakes are often represented in religion, literature and pop culture. There seems to be more to the snake symbolism in TWD though.
Tumblr media
We usually see them in very significant scenes around Daryl and Beth or Daryl and Beth proxies. Once he stabbed one through the head with his knife (Still), another time he shot his arrow through one iirc, in Stradivarius, and cut off its head and put it in his pocket. I initially thought perhaps the decapitated snake in Stradivarius was a foreshadow of Henry’s head on the stake, and I still think it could be but yeah, I still don’t feel like I know enough.
Then there’s the ouroboro on Morgan’s book and the infinity snake on Alpha’s belt buckle. I’ve wondered if snakes and earthworms are synonymous, but I’m not confident about it. Thoughts?
@galadrieljones:
I don't know that I have any coherent or overarching theory for snakes and how they function in the show, but I can try and throw some things out there. I think your basic associations of the snake with evil and the Garden of Eden, and then the snake with the ouroboros are pretty much the best starting points.
My two favorite pieces of western literature, Lonesome Dove and True Grit both feature snakes, Lonesome Dove at the beginning, like in the very first scene which shows a couple of hungry hogs fighting over a snake, and True Grit at the end, when Mattie falls into an old mine and breaks her leg, and a rattle snake slithers out the belly of a corpse and bites her on the hand.
In both instances they seem to signal Naturalistic undertones, like, the unstoppable forces of nature, and how they seem uncaring in the face of human plans and infrastructure. Especially in True Grit, the snake bite happens so close to the end, like right after Mattie achieves her ultimate goal. So, like it seems like the story should already be over, but there's one more trial to contend with, and that's nature itself.
Naturalism is obviously a big theme in TWD, especially considering all the references to Jack London, wolves, etc. So, the snake could be a dark omen related to interference from the natural world, which in TWDU can mean zombies, drought, storms, predators, etc. But that's just kind of general literary analysis.
Tumblr media
In the show, snakes often appear around Daryl, who kills and eats them. Daryl is like a king of the natural world, has always sort of been its ambassador, as the first character to teach both the audience and the other characters that the only way to kill walkers is by destroying the head.
He also masters the chupacabra, the Huldra/Hecate, is a master hunter, walks out of the fire, etc. etc. The snake-killing thing makes me think of Perseus, a Greek Hero and son of Zeus, who slayed Medusa with help from Athena's mirrored shield, Hades' Helm of Darkness (an invisibility helmet), and the winged sandals of Hermes.
Tumblr media
I don't know that we've ever discussed Leah as Medusa? Sort of interesting, as it is not inaccurate to describe Daryl as a "man of stone" for a long, long time. Perseus marries Andromeda, whose own father, the king, tried to sacrifice her to Poseidon for affronting the beauty of his sea nymphs.
Her father tied her to a rock, sacrificing her to a great sea serpent (snake), which, once again, Perseus slayed and then claimed Andromeda as his wife. Their story is regarded as a tragedy, and after her death, Athena placed Andromeda in the sky near the constellations Cassiopeia (her mother) and Perseus (her husband). Lots of parallels there, with snakes, serpents, the naked Beth walker tied to the tree, and the stars.
The ouroboros is also an interesting symbol, as it's the mythical embodiment of the mantra "the end is the beginning." It feels somewhat disparate, all the places we see it: the book "The Art of Peace," Teddy's box that contains the clue to the missing girl, and Alpha's belt buckle. You could also connect it to prominent instances of "the end is the beginning," ie: Abraham's speech about "Alpha to omega, battlefield to beach" and also Teddy's cults' graffiti, which we see in "Alaska."
Tumblr media
Teddy is therefore heavily associated with the ouroboros, as it seems to fascinate him. Nick is looking at the book "The Art of Peace" when he is shot and killed, and he then "wakes up" in the flowers, suggesting a metaphorical resurrection. This seems linked to the mantra "No one's gone until they're gone," which seems redundant but also suggests that life, in some sense, is eternal, and the choices we make in this life will affect our choices in the next life, etc. etc.
The fact that Daryl eats snakes, especially in Still, in which he stabs the snake in the head, is perhaps an oblique reference to the ouroboros. Daryl seems to be continuously reliving his old traumas, unable to escape the vicious cycle of loss/grief/madness initiated by his loss of Beth. All the "recycling" you've been taking us through, @wdway, is a manifestation of that cycle and how he relives his grief over and over again. The end is the beginning is the end, etc. etc.
Tumblr media
The lost girl in "Cindy Hawkins" is linked to the ouroboros. John Dorie, Sr. cannot escape the girl he lost decades back. It continues to haunt him until he finds her corpse, but even then, we learn that Cindy was mostly a way of deflecting the true trauma that haunts him, which is the fact that he left his son, and then his son died before he ever got to make amends. We see how this haunts him in season 7, per the return of his alcoholism, and his death, which involves sacrificing his life for a child.
In a parallel scenario, Daryl is haunted by a lost girl until he "finds" her, or the "dead" version of her, ie: Leah. Leah, a corpse by the end. It will seem as though something has been solved inside of Daryl after finally ending that cycle; however, I believe we'll learn that it was merely another deflection from the truth, which is that he is still haunted by what happened to Beth, ie: he left her and then she "died" before he got to truly tell her how he felt. Some sort of catharsis has to take place here. There's been too much Beth build-up for this to not be the case.
That was a long probably confusing ramble lol. Just a way of saying, the missing girl as related to the ouroboros seems like an important key to understanding Daryl's cycle of grief. The fact he eats snakes isn't coincidence here.
Tumblr media
(None of that really explains why Alpha is wearing the ouroboros; however, she is a serious symbol in and of herself, part of the Naturalist theme. She's beheaded by Negan, again, not unlike Medusa who is beheaded by Perseus. The Whisperers sort of represent the realm where life meets death, as we have living humans acting like walkers to survive. She preaches basically that the new world belongs to the dead, so we must become the dead to live in it. Life literally becomes death, talk about a snake eating its own tail. Idk.)
Anyway that was a lot of snake business. I hope any of it makes sense!
@wdway:
I believe the snakes are tie to the rule of 3. We saw a snake that was featured, that the writers truly wanted us to focus on s4e12 Still. This is the Alpha of Daryl and Beth story. This was the episode that have only two living humans, one male, Daryl and one female, Beth. I remember one of the show's producers said something to the effect that it was as if they (Daryl and Beth) were the only two people left alive in the world. Which would in essence make them a type of proxy Adam and Eve. The snake helps to emphasize that these last two people have been exiled from their Garden of Eden.
This is the beginning of Daryl's and Beth's transformation from cell neighbors within the prison group community to trusted friends and at the end of the episode a possibility of something much more. This is a relationship unlike any before for Daryl and it changed him for the rest of his life.
Tumblr media
The second snake was in s9e7 Stradivarius. Daryl shot an arrow and pins the snake to a tree. A reminder that in the Garden of Eden there were 2 trees, the tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil, the other tree was the Tree of Life. Christ was nailed to a tree. This second snake Daryl cut the head off and keeps it.
I believe this was Daryl's middle story. It had been 6 years since losing Rick and a few years since his time with Leah. Carol helps to bring him back from his self-imposed exile.
I just went and checked out the snake in e16, this could be the Omega or the beginning of the end, not only to the series but of Daryl time of believing Beth is dead.
Tumblr media
Just the fact that the third snake we see is in an episode called Acts of God, make me believe this is the 3rd and last snake we will see with any type of focus. It is also the only snake that Daryl doesn't kill. Daryl didn't even have any direct contact with it. It was merely focused on a yellow bus near where Daryl, Aaron and Father Gabriel, who were fighting for their life in a car junkyard full of Beth symbolism.
I believe these 3 snakes are important to the Daryl and Beth's timeline and part of the rule of 3. 3 focused snakes and we have 3 men, Daryl, Aaron, the person who brought the good news when the music box played, and Father Galadriel the Sirius symbol. These 3 are fighting in a car junkyard near a large fallen tree surrounded with cars with open doors and trunks. 2 yellow buses, a black and white prison bus, a red flatbed truck and I believe a Cherokee hatchback.
There is a license tag that is seen just barely. NG 4355. Series number 43 was s4e8 To Far Gone. The episode where TF lost the prison. The episode where Daryl and Beth escapes together. Series number 55 was s5e4 Slabtown.
Could this be a Cherokee hatchback?
Tumblr media
@galadrieljones:
I forgot about that third snake, Ann. Another snake around Daryl. I need to look into these three serpents and what they could portend. Also, that could definitely be a Cherokee Hatchback, per my pov. It could also be an old Jeep Wagoneer. Hard to tell.
Didn’t Lori drive a Wagoneer? I can’t remember. There’s a flashback. I’ll try to go back and see.
@wdway:
Before I moved on with more scene comparing there's a couple of things I want to say about the snake. I do realize that there is at least one other snake for Daryl and that one was in s2 when a snake frightened Daryl's horse and through him. He's landed in a riverbed. Later in that episode, he hallucinated his brother. I don't want to downplay that episode or that snake but for the rule of 3 I want to group it from the point of the snake representing a part of Daryl and Beth’s story.
@galadrieljones, I have to say that I'm really hoping it's Cherokee because of the connection with the Cherokee Rose that Daryl placed on Carol's empty grave. There was also a Cherokee on the bridge when Daryl and his brother when they fought walkers after leaving TF. On that vehicle the license tag was the same as the vehicle that Beth was taken away in. The same license tag on a Chevy truck when he spent the night in the garage with the Claimers, the same tag that was on the white bus that overturned with Eugene and team DC, the same tag that was on the police vehicle at Grady in Crossed. So see, I'm hoping for a vehicle that connection to Beth.
@galadrieljones:
You know I just went back to rewatch that scene, when Daryl gives Carol the Cherokee Rose. I feel there's a lot of seeds in Daryl's old stories. He used to tell them all the time. This particular story has new weight now. Here's what he says:
Tumblr media
"It's a Cherokee Rose. The story is that when American soldiers were moving Indians off their land on the Trail of Tears, the Cherokee mothers were grieving and crying so much because they were losing their little ones along the way, from exposure and disease and starvation. A lot of them just disappeared. So, the elders, they said a prayer; asked for a sign to uplift the mothers' spirits, give them strength and hope. The next day, this rose started to grow right where the mothers' tears fell." Sounds a lot like what's going on in Fear.
I mean, "A lot of them JUST DISAPPEARED." It's interesting.
@twdmusicboxmystery:
Hey Gals! Just wanted to pop in and say I’ve really enjoyed reading your discussion the past few days. I had a few thoughts on some of what he said. Nothing too groundbreaking.
@frangipanilove, I really loved your discussion about tying Carol's death fake out to Leah a few days ago. You talked about her red headscarf being kind of synonymous with Leah's red hair. I hadn't really thought of it like that before. And that made me think of something else.
No idea if this is the thing, but I was wondering if the red items, on top of everything else we've discussed, could mean…deception? Not sure that's exactly the right word. But I was thinking that, as you said, Daryl finding the red headscarf signaled him thinking Carol was dead. So, he was kind of deceived about that. And we have Leah with her red hair, and during that time she was with Daryl, we know she was deceiving him a lot.
Tumblr media
I tried to think of other examples. The red garment in Beth’s cell could represent a similar thing to Carol's red headscarf. Just people believing she was dead, when she really wasn't. And of course we can't prove this yet, but I think we all believe her “disappearance” might been something Grady or the CRM purposely orchestrated to make TF believe she was dead. There is even the red umbrella we saw in S8 that they used to hold the gate shut. In that episode, we found out Jadis had been deceiving Rick, and she betrayed and turned on TF.
Maybe “misconception” is a better word. It represents a misguided belief on TF's part. Again, not sure that's the thing. Just something I thought of while I was reading your words.
Tumblr media
I also love the snake discussion. Like you, @galadrieljones, it's a symbol I feel like I've never been able to nail down entirely. That's mostly because, as you said, pretty much every culture in the world has some sort of snake lore. So, it’s just impossible to know which one the writers are going with. And they might be pulling from several. But I really like everything you gals have laid out here. It makes perfect sense and I agree.
I wanted to touch on the question of Alpha for a minute. I hadn't thought about it quite like this before either, but I do think a snake was a major symbol of her. As you said, there's the belt buckle. But reading what you wrote the other day, it reminded me of a particular scene. Remember when she met TF at the border and told them she knew they crossed into her land three times. (I wanna say that was 10x01?) This is when Carol tries to kill Alpha, but Daryl and Michonne stop her.
Tumblr media
Michonne apologizes for Carol and says that she’s still in the throes of grief over her son's death. Alpha then looks at Carol and says she's forgiven, mother to mother. But when she does that, she does this weird serpentine thing with her upper body and torso. I remember them specifically pointing it out on TTD. I think most people just assumed it was Samantha Morton doing her best to make Alpha a creepier villain. (And, you know, mission accomplished.) But I honestly think she was trying to be snake-like there.
I hadn't thought of her as Medusa, but with what you pointed out about Negan cutting off her head, it wouldn't surprise me at all if they were using Medusa as a template for her. So, anyway. Nothing groundbreaking. I just thought this was really interesting discussion and you all made some excellent points.
As to the three snakes, I don't have a whole lot of insight. But I do think you're right. I was thinking that perhaps the three snakes, much as you said @wdway, represent three things Daryl needs to overcome on his way back to Beth. I was thinking that the snake might represent the devil in any given storyline. And by that, I mean a villain, yes, but also just whatever antagonistic force they're up against in that particular storyline.
Tumblr media
So, the one he saw with Beth would represent her getting shot and their separation. Or maybe Grady/the CRM at large. It foreshadowed the biggest thing (villain/antagonistic force) Daryl would deal with throughout that arc. As you said @galadrieljones, we pretty much saw him being quiet and stony about it for several seasons. It took a long time for us to realize it, but that stoniness culminated in the Leah storyline. (Which was not shown to the audience chronologically).
He didn’t come out of it until Carol came to get him to watch over Henry. So that was all one big arc for Daryl and him dealing with that particular snake, which was losing Beth and Rick.
At the beginning of the next arc, when Carol and Henry showed up and he came out of his stoniness, he became a parent, and more or less became the de facto leader of the community, we saw another snake. But as you said, he cut the second snake’s head off.
Tumblr media
If Alpha was that particular snake, well, they cut her head off too. No, Daryl didn't do it himself, but because he was the leader, he kind of presided over the beheading of that snake, if you will. And then there's the fact that even though Negan did it, Carol orchestrated it. And she was in the with the snake as well.
In fact, now that I'm saying that, maybe the people in the scene represent the ones who will overcome the snake the most directly. I'll come back to that.
If that arc ended with the Whisper war, the new arc after that would be the one in which they come across the Commonwealth. So, we have this third snake with Daryl, Gabriel, and Aaron in the junkyard.
This is the only snake of the three that we didn't see die in the scene. I don't know why that is. Maybe because it simply hasn't happened yet. If the CW feeds into the CRM, then maybe you really won't see the snake "die" in this arc. But it feels to me like Daryl, Aaron, and Gabriel will be the most direct people to help take down the Commonwealth from the outside, while others like Connie and Zeke work on taking it down from the inside.
Similarly, with Beth and Daryl seeing the snake together back in Still, I kind of think (also due to what we see in the intro flash of Beth) that the two of them are going to be the ones who most directly take out the CRM in the long run.
Tumblr media
This next part is me just waxing Christian, but I was thinking about this junkyard again while reading about the three snakes the other day. It almost feels like the junkyard is a representation of their world. Just sort of a sh*tshow of junk and obstacles they have to navigate, while being besieged by enemies (both Commonwealth soldiers and the dead). Meanwhile, there's snake slithering around (the devil) keeping an eye on things.
Tumblr media
It also made me think a little bit about school bus symbol. The school bus, much like the snake, is one that I'm not sure I have nailed down in terms of what it actually means or how they use it functionally in the symbolism. Obviously, we've seen a lot. But I was thinking that it only comes around when really negative things happen. Such as, losing a community (the school bus in S4 after the prison went down), a war (the one at Hilltop during AOW), a major crash or obstacle (the short bus in 5×05), or even someone disappearing or being separated from TF (in Rick's old man coda, which I think foreshadowed him going into the CRM, they played the song, "Another One Rides the Bus").
Anyway. Mostly just some musings on my part. Great job with all the discussions. I'm still really loving all of the Daryl/Leah/Beth/Carol parallels. I think they're very clear and I love all the digging you're doing!
Oh, one more totally random thought I had the other day. I said a few weeks ago that I thought originally they may have been planning to show us Beth in 11x01, much like they did with Morgan in 5x01, and then follow a similar template, just showing her a few times over the season, but not having her reunite with TF right away.
But between CoVid and MMB backing out of the spinoff, they had to re-shuffle and do things a little differently. I still think there’s a good chance that’s the case, but we’ll probably never get confirmation on it either way.
But I was thinking that, if they’d done it that way, there’s a good chance the entire Leah storyline would have played out after the audience had already seen Beth. Wouldn’t that have been interesting? It would have put a whole different spin on things for the audience to know Beth was out there. It also would have been a LOT more obvious that Leah and Beth are duality couple. Anyway, no way to prove any of that, of course. Just something I was musing over.
@wdway:
Your above comments were wonderful, and I agree with all your points. Your thoughts on the color red possibly sometimes meaning deception or misconception was very interesting.
In mentioning Beth at Grady my mind went straight to Beth's soft cast. When we first saw it, it was white and this would have been the first time Beth would have also have seen it, waking up with it. I'm thinking for her and us as viewers the purpose for it being a hurt arm was accepted easily there was no reason not to.
Tumblr media
As time went on the cast took on shades of red, if you are correct in the idea of red being deception or misconception then that's what they're telling us with the white to shades of red cast, that its purpose was not what they originally lead us to believe it was for.
Galadriel replied to you
@twdmusicboxmystery, love all the contributions here and the idea of Alpha seeming sort of snake like is quite intriguing. With her bald head especially and her odd affectations in that one scene you mentioned, I think it’s a great observation.
The notion of the snake in the orchard or the snake in the grass is really ever present in TWD as major problems often begin as insidious nothing problems, or are veiled by other lesser problems, red herrings if you will.
So, like in season 4, the bleeding eye sickness was the red herring that lead to the surprise attack by the Governor, which sneaks up on TF as a snake. The Claimers are an insidious danger, as is the situation at Grady, seeing as Beth and Daryl, in their constant need to escape from large quantities of walkers are then blindsided by the evil of humans, who kidnap Beth. Who could have seen that coming?
Tumblr media
The Wolves are a red herring in some ways, veiling the larger danger or snake in the grass—Negan, whose brutality seems to take all of TF by surprise. Then the Whisperers are like literally hiding in plain sight, striking stealthily and introducing their malice by killing Jesus.
The CW has many hidden dangers w Lance being the most insidious. For a while I thought Lance was the red herring but now, I’m not entirely sure—is the entirety of the CW just a major red herring to the coming introduction of the CRM? Time will tell. So basically, snakes as insidious and hidden dangers is an interesting association.
The idea of Daryl mastering these creatures also makes sense, as he is the now hero of the story. Perseus with his wings and his cloak, ready to go.
Tumblr media
I also love the red = deception, as I feel connected to the idea through my study of Daryl’s arrows and how red can sometimes function in the environment. I’ve viewed red more generally as like a stop light, ie: do not proceed, or, danger ahead, while green is a sign of a “clear” path.
I also agree it would have been super interesting if we had known something about Beth in hindsight while watching 11a. It would have kicked the doors wide open for the GA, too, in terms of understanding what’s going on w Daryl.
Now I wonder if they would do something similar just in reverse, ie: leaving us hanging on Leah’s mysterious Beth appearance and associations and then later revealing Beth to us so that we go OH THATS WHAT WAS GOING ON. I hope that makes sense lol.

i think i asked this question before but if The Mafia boys (excluding Mafia 3 bc i havent played it yet) were demigods who do you think their godly parent would be based off of their personalities? tbh i think:
Sam: son of Zeus (i know its stereotypical but Hades could work as well)
Paulie: son of Dionysus, could also see Hermes
Tommy: son of Nemesis
Vito: son of Athena
Joe: son of Ares (Mars would work as well)
Henry: son of Zeus. 100%.
anyone can disagree with me and chip in but these are just my takes :3c
i don’t think you have asked before (and tbh, it’s been a while since i was really into greek mythology so a lot of this is going over my head) but i’m inclined to agree with these.  especially henry, he certainly does have “hera is trying to kill me” energy.
vito is the one i’d maybe dispute, just because, iirc, didn’t athena tend to help her kids?  he gets fucked over an awful lot.  though you did say you’re going off personality, so i suppose that makes a difference.
