Really wild how Paradox manages to create games that look so complex with a million different mechanics, but once you look past the convoluted UI you realize that all their games are actually just shallow map painting simulators. Even Crusader Kings, the game that's supposed to be a sort of medieval sims roleplaying your ruler is still all about building a big army and conquering everything around you. This is especially wild considering how shit and boring wars are in literally every one of their games. In every one of them you are either weaker than your enemy, in which case you just abuse the shitty AI to slowly kill them with attrition and win, or you are stronger and then you don't even have to fight because the enemy will just run away and let you siege all their castles/cities/planets. And somehow Paradox manages to absolutely dominate the grand strategy market.

The one thing that I will always love about Hearts of Iron IV is the modding. I can play as the closeted gay tsar of Bulgaria and commit crimes against humanity against my fellow Balkan brethren. Nowhere else can I fulfill my dreams and also do so as a gay autocrat.

There is something about the "The New Order"-mod for Hearts of Iron 4 that I cannot put my finger on. It is gruesome, and filled with an oppressive feeling, but there is also hope in there - but it is mostly known for the dark alternate-history scenario presented within.

A mod based on a gameplay of a previous entry in the series - WW2 grand strategy - in which the Allies lost. And the modders have this new alternate timeline, starting in 1964, were German has Europe under control, Italy has the middle east and northern Africa with Spanish assistance to stand against German aggression - and with a brutally imperial Japan having broken off ties with the Axis powers... and America stands as the only major player fighting for democracy.

And the Soviet Union? It collapsed. The Red Army held out for almost 20 years until it collapses in a catastrophic invasion, trying to reclaim Moscow and the lost western part of Russia... and what was left collapsed into a collection of bickering states, divided into bandit kingdoms, military juntas, and ideological extremists, and the few hopeful optimists holding on for their lives.

And then there is the ultra-nationalistic Siberian Black League, otherwise known as Omsk. They run on revenge. They want to kick out the vile German from sacred Russian lands, and they practice hatred. They breathe it, they live it - and they know that one day there will get a chance to act on it. They call it... the Great Trial.

Bear in mind, these guys are arguably not the worst faction in Russia.

They should add like a 1/1000 chance in Hoi4 for it to just brick your computer, forcing you off of the internet, and outside. I think that this would improve the state of affairs on history forums, and the internet as a whole.

I keep hearing about this debate about Japan getting nuked on WW2 and I'm like, what's the point. You got people who insist nuclear weapons should have never been used, and then you got people who insist it was acceptable because that made the war end quicker and save more lives in the long run.

I for one disagree. I think Japan should have been nuked more! Screw Godzilla, turn the entire island into a Kaiju Battle Royale. And then move onto nazi germany, the soviet union, whatever. But nooo we live in the timeline where everyone had restraint and didn't bother to do anything interesting before deterrence became the norm. I'm just tired of this shit why won't history be interesting past the hearts of iron timeline.
