B-17G Flying Fortress

One of the most well known bombers of all time, the B-17 Flying Fortress became famous for the long daylight bombing raids over Europe in WWII. While it lacked the range and bomb load of its contemporary B-24 Liberator, the B-17 became the more famous of the two due to the many tales of B-17s bringing their crews back home despite heavy damage. With up to thirteen machine guns, the B-17 seemed to be genuine flying “fortress in the sky.” However, bomber losses reached the unacceptable point in 1943 in the face of stiff German opposition, and the B-17s welcomed the introduction of long-range fighter escort before they could continue their war against the Reich.

Okay, I'm done being subtle about this.

I keep mentioning in my tags and in a post recently that World War II was allowed to happen because Hitler started conquering Germany's neighbors.

The world didn't interfere at the time due to 1) not wanting to start another war so soon after WWI, and 2) The Great Depression was nearing its end, but still happening.

Hitler's excuse at the time was to "reunite Germany" since part of the treaty of WWI was taking all of Germany's military away and splitting the country. They brought it to its knees as much as possible. So when Germany started taking that back, when they started rebuilding their army, it was illegal to do so because of the treaty, but no one stopped them.

Things only escalated to a full-on war when Hitler invaded Poland, after being threatened not to do so by several other countries. He did it anyway.

This is what we are currently seeing in Palestine right now.

What Israel is doing is, by international law, illegal. The people who have the power to stop them are not doing so. Israel is operating under an excuse ("self-defense," and religious zionists support them because they are "taking back the Holy land and fulfilling God's promise" or whatever), and Israel is now attacking Lebanon and Yemen.

They're just going to keep going.

I've been hesitant to call Israel a Nazi state due to the sheer amount of baggage that comes with that, but there is no denying it at this point. They're neo-nazi fascists who are following in their own oppressors footsteps, spreading hatred and violence to other parts of the world while no one in power stops them. Hell, even worse, this time around, the people in power are fucking funding it.

If you think this "war" won't affect you, think again.

If you ask me, looking back on history, if we don't put a stop to this in its tracks soon, then I fear this is only the beginning.

Know your history. Stand with Palestine. Ceasefire NOW.

Fieldwork here on Rota is well underway, with about half of our mist-netting lanes and trails marked and prepped for next month's bird banding. But along the way, we find all kinds of incredible landscapes and hidden treasures.

Top left: A WWII Japanese artillery gun sunk into a manmade cave in a limestone wall. The old gun is being overtaken by the jungle and has ferns and moss growing all over the barrel.

Top right: An old wrecked boat inside the lagoon on Rota's northwestern shore, with brilliant blue sky above and turquoise water below.

Bottom left: Guam Coenogyne, a rare endangered orchid found only on Rota and Guam. This white flower with a red center emerges from a swirl of large bulbs with leaves that cling to the bark of a mossy tree.

If you don't follow the 100th Bomb Group Foundation on Facebook then you are missing out on some great historical information associated with Masters of the Air. The one post of theirs that really hit close for me was this one:

"Sammy, better known as Sam Hurry, played by Alfie Tempest. Sam Hurry grew up near Thorpe Abbotts and was a frequent visitor to the 351st Bomb Squadron. “On the base, I was unofficially adopted by the American servicemen who welcomed me,” he wrote. “They shared a variety of experiences and insights broader than the small village school could provide.” Sam was also allowed to assist with various jobs on base including washing down dispersal points after an aircraft left for a mission. “The hardstand was covered with 100-octane aviation fuel,” Sam recalled, “and we would be given a lighted rag to throw onto the concrete which immediately burst into flames, burning all the oil and grease off and leaving the area clean and ready for the aircraft to return.” The time after the Hundredth departed in 1945 was hard for Sam. “The silence was unnerving,” he wrote, “the atmosphere was ghostly.” It was the most difficult period of our young lives to adjust to an emptiness that was not of our making.” As an adult, Sam never forgot the veterans that he came to know during the war. “Thorpe Abbotts had etched itself into my heart,” he wrote, and when he found that local people had started an effort to restore the Control Tower as a 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum, he joined them.

In 1979, the 100th Bomb Group Association elected Sam an honorary member and he attended five reunions in the US. Sam Hurry passed away in 2014, and his story lives on. (Photos courtesy of Apple TV+ and Malcolm Finnis)
