"Like what ya see, Yeager?" Ymir and Hitch did a full spin to show off their dresses.
"Don't get any ideas now. I only belong to my baby." Eren offered Ymir a brittle smile. Yup! Shadis will be losing his remaining hair tonight.
Jean groaned when Ymir dragged Hitch back to their hotel room because Historia needed help with her gown.
By the time they arrived at the ballroom, Bertholdt was already trashed and was talking nonsense.
"What does he have that I don't have?"
"Nothing!"
"I know right?!"
"Chicks are weird like that!"
Reiner thinks he's the best for making sure Bertholdt's glass is always full, it is a terrible idea, considering they're not even halfway done the whole night.
Where are they?
'We're on our way.' is the only text he got.
"¡Maldita sea, que buena esta!"
Eren turned around to see what warranted Connie's Spanish.
Annie is a dead ringer for Elsa in her fitted light blue dress. Armin and Annie are too busy eyefucking each other to notice that they got the room.
Then comes the third wheel… For a second Eren almost didn't recognize Mikasa who's wearing a strapless pink dress. Though not as revealing as the other dresses, it gives him a sense of unease seeing his friend in it.
Armin looked like a downright casanova with Annie holding on to his right arm and Mikasa holding his left. They slowly descended through the grand staircase with the spotlight following them. What the fuck?
Didn't those two hate each other? Eren is perplexed seeing Mikasa and Annie talking amicably while his best friend presumably went to get drinks.
So far, everyone is having a good time except for Bert and well… him.
"Want my jacket?" he whispered. He didn't want their friends to hear him ask for the nth time. Mikasa never really disappoints, she always knows what he needs. Despite the noise and all this distraction, she still hears him. She turned around with her usual expression of 'what do you need, Eren?' written all over her face.
"Do you want me to hold it for you?" He looked good in his blazer but if Eren's not comfortable, Mikasa will gladly take it off his hands.
He facepalmed knowing that she misunderstood but instead of explaining he surprised himself "Want to get out of here?"
Eren never fully understood but he can see how truly selfish he is. She didn't even ask why and just nodded at him.
He took a hold of her wrist and pulled her away… just like when they were kids.
What he didn't know and something that Mikasa will never admit is that she felt just as selfish as he did. She knows he's going to win prom king with Historia as his prom queen. And while she's been resigned to her fate of seeing Eren with some other girl, when Eren asked her, the sleeping fire in her heart took over. There was nothing she could do but let the flames devour her.
He holds her wrist and pulls her away like when they were kids, Mikasa felt like a princess that she reads in her storybooks long before she met Eren Yeager. Perhaps the most important part is, he is Mikasa's prince… I want to be just the two of us, for a little while longer. Just tonight.
As soon as they entered a nearby diner, Eren saw a group of college boys eyeing Mikasa like a piece of meat. He cursed under his breath.
Eren put an arm around her and ordered. Mikasa didn't question his arm on her shoulder nor his decision to not eat at the diner. Her face brightened up when he handed her a strawberry milkshake. "Don't drink it all at once. You'll have a brain freeze." she smiled at him and nodded.
They were laughing and halfway through the fries when they arrived at Eren's hotel room.
"Bertholdt is a bit drunk… I'm worried about Armin." Mikasa doesn't want to go back but she also doesn't want anything bad to happen to her friend.
"Armin can surely take Bert!" they laughed as they cheered for their blonde friend's romantic endeavor.
"Did you know that Annie thought that Armin has a crush on me?"
"Armin, you dog!"
“I can imagine Armin getting an aneurism if his dear mother-” Eren not so subtly points at Mikasa “didn’t approve of the girl he is pining for!”
“Really?” It's been an ongoing joke about how Mikasa is Armin’s mother. “This comes out from a guy who refuses to go home unless I drop him off at Armin's house because he insists on kissing him goodnight!”
“Shut up! I was drunk!”
Their sides are splitting because of laughing too much.
"hahahaha!"
"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
"Is that why the two of you had this intense rivalry? To think you accuse me of being dramatic by calling Jean my mortal enemy!"

Shingeki no Kyojin Headcanons: 104th training corps (College AU - Outfits pt II)
Part I | College AU HCs
Part II of the outfits/aesthetics headcanons - College AU that would (kinda) be included in the oneshot I'm working on.
IMPORTANT: I do not own Shingeki no Kyojin nor the trend of this outfits-displays, only this HCs belong to me. // Contains spoilers (for the icons that I used in some characters) // English is not my first language, so I ask for your patience and understanding.
Tumblr media
Historia Reiss
She has a huge wardrobe and so well organized by color, textures, and sizes. From halter tops to maxi dresses, our queen really dresses like one.
Forever in love with skirts and dresses with patterns and/or pastel colors. But don’t get confused, girl has range.
So, one could see her wearing monochromatic ensembles one day and the other, she’s all dressed up with some bright color pieces matching a patterned shirt.
Also owns a vast collection of jewelry and accessories both original and classy. And let’s not forget the shoes: sneakers, heels, boots, sandals and cute little anklets to match. I swear she can make crocs look boujee.
Contrary to what people think, she doesn’t support fast fashion industry. Aware of her privilege, she knows she has the money and time to buy from small businesses and keep herself trendy.
Last but not least, and kind of clothing related: Historia loves taking Ymir to thrift shopping dates and later go eating at some indie cafeteria. The lifestyle is also part of the outfit, alright?
Tumblr media
Ymir
Her wardrobe consists in comfortable clothes and not giving a fuck. All her clothes give Rockstar lesbian vibes (stan this queen). Her designated color palette is based on dark shades, so it’s a real contrast between her outfits and Historia’s.
Loves combat boots and her wasted Converse TM, although her favorite pieces from her apparel are bomber jackets, coats, sweaters, and hoodies.
Ymir also wears a fair amount of stainless-steel accessories, mostly chunky rings and chains. Moreover, is common to find her listening to music, therefore, earphones are a fashion statement really.
Speaking about must-wear, this girl likes to paint her nails black but due her anxiety she tends to scratch the painting off so it gives this grunge look (don’t romanticize this fellas).
Historia would suggest her some trends or give her advice about color, but being honest, Ymir has a very well-defined style at this point.
Now, about her dress style: She won’t dress like a metalhead nor grunge (at least not intentionally). And she wouldn’t define her style as dark, it’s just what it is.
Tumblr media
Reiner Braun
He wears lots of denim in jackets and jeans but also owns a couple of dress pants that combines with beanies or simple caps. Also, has plenty of plain simple shirts that fit his strong body.
Reiner usually wears opaque shades of all colors. Another fact, he’s not a big fan of patterns unless we’re talking about sweaters. He also wears jackets yet avoids cardigans and hoodies.
A very important thing to know, Reiner has a lot of gym clothes, he works out daily so don’t be surprised.
Most of those clothes are joggers, pants, shorts, and t-shirts that look as if he ripped them off or something.
Actually, a lot of his clothes look like they’re about to be ripped apart due his huge ass pectorals (please, Reiner, let me rest gently on your pecs). Just kidding, his whole wardrobe fits him perfectly.
Finally, if Reiner had to define his style in a sentence, he’d probably acknowledge that he gives the impression of a rich a-hole, but really, Rei just likes to be comfortable and presentable at all times. So, rich white guy it is for now.
Tumblr media
Bertolt Hoover
Bertie is that one friend that always carries a cardigan or sweater just in case, also because he tends to lend his clothes if a friend of his is in need. So thoughtful, our big baby.
His wardrobe is amazingly well organized, and its color palette is unmatched. Lots of blue, brown, beige, white and black.
We know he’s tall enough to call everybody’s attention every time he enters a room. And being as shy as he can be, he avoids brilliant colors or striking pieces. Instead, he chooses simpler outfits.
Bertolt follows this formula every time: pants, shirt, sweater. Everything clean and discrete.
Now if we must talk about his shoes, Berts prefers some white sneakers or modest dress shoes. He wouldn’t say he owns a vast collection, rather, he keeps a fair amount for different occasions.
No tattoos nor piercings. Speaking of which, it’s so rare to see him wearing any accessories at all. Maybe he'll carry with him an analogical clock, and that's it. Although if someone gave him a friendship bracelet you can be sure he'll wear it all-the-time.
Tumblr media
Annie Leonhart
Lots of denim for her jackets and jeans. Hoodies, bands merch and graphic t-shirts.
Her clothes’ color palette has range but nothing too pastel or colorful. Instead, she gets all the opaque version of the pieces she likes.
Not that Annie hates dresses or skirts, it’s just unusual for her to even think about wearing them. She prioritizes being comfortable, and tight/short clothes can’t provide her that feeling.
Hates slim clothes unless it’s a tank top or something similar. She just prefers oversized hoodies and mom jeans. Also, if Annie can avoid skinny pants, you can be sure she will.
Owns a fair amount of gym clothes because she also likes to train but most of the times, you’ll see her running around campus, really. She’s a simple woman with simple pleasures.
Annie is the personification of ‘looks like she could kill you, is an actual cinnamon roll’, from her attitude to her clothes. So beware, for she’s the queen of looking rude with her chains around her belt, and her ring to match but don't let her fool- holy shit, that thing can actually stab someone. As I was mentioning, such a sweet gal, isn’t she?
Tumblr media
Hitch Dreyse
She can make it boujee with so little effort (and money), lemme tell you. Wears her clothes with such an attitude and class. Hitch's an actual wine-mom, or aunt maybe? she gives those vibes.
People have the impression from her style, that her parents are rich, but nothing could be further from the truth. It’s just that Hitch knows how to dress. (Also, we know that for a fact sis has a scholarship, okay?) ANYWAYS,
Miss here is forever in love with white and baby blue. Owns plenty of jeans but also dress pants and culottes that wears with blazers or shirts that make her look like a princess with a diversity of fabrics such as satin, silk-alike texture, and cotton.
Hitch is the queen of heels. Although she hates very high ones, she rocks shorter heels and walks in them with little to no effort. Or at least looks like it. All of her shoes are classy yet unique.
Now, let’s talk about her collection of accessories. Hitch likes her jewels in gold and only buys signature pieces: rings, earrings (for her four lobe perforations, two in each ear) and necklaces, of course. Yes, it is gold but in modest designs. Sounds fair, right?
Tumblr media
Marlowe Freudenberg
Our big boy in here thinks that he should look presentable at all times since he’s the Chief Editor of the History student’s academic journal at Paradis’ Uni. Not that he cares a lot of his appearance, really.
And that’s actually cute because he puts effort into his outfits. Marlowe would be one of those straight guys that are hygienic and know how to dress and has no fragile masculinity.
Cologne is a must and part of his attire just like handkerchiefs are, because at the same time, he was raised to be the classic gentleman TM.
Marlowe dresses in all colors; he can’t choose a favorite one or a never-changing palette. He’s aware of season colors too and plays that at his wardrobe favor.
Yet for his outfits he’d follow few simple rules: oxfords (cleaned), dress pants (somewhere between slim fit and straight leg), some polo/dress shirt/cotton thing-y for top and a sweater / cardigan / blazer if season demands it.
Finally, our favorite student-editor spends some time of his routine shaving his face and styling his hair, albeit wouldn’t consider himself a vain guy nor full of himself. Lowkey expects Hitch to notice his appearance. Such a sweetheart.

First batch of Pride 2021 HC doodles! More info under the cut!
Yelepokopiku
💙 Yelena - Intersex/Agender queer who mainly uses She/her! I know in canon Yelena’s beard was fake, but I really like HCing that she Can actually grow a beard, and a very fine one at that ;3c 💙 Porco - Bi trans guy who uses He/him! I don’t remember what exactly led me to HCing him as trans, but it’s a HC I’m very fond of, and seeing other people HC him as trans too makes me really happy! Anyways I did consider making him all tsundere-ish and flustered about his partners loving on him, but I figured it’d be sweeter if he was visibly happy about it, so that’s what I went with instead :] 💙 Pieck - Bi apagender gal who uses She/her! Originally I HCed her as a cis woman but I think she could care less about gender as a whole, so she’s apagender/gender apathetic now x3
Reibert
💙 Bertholdt - Nonbinary pan who uses any pronouns! Idk what else to say they’re a sweaty anxious beanpole who has a big bara husband (who is very much a softie despite his exterior!!) and 6 kids with said bara, she’s living life babey! 💙 Reiner - Cis gay guy who uses He/him! While in canon Reiner kinda sorta has a weird thing for women (namely Historia), ever since his discussion with Ymir where they practically called each other gay Reiner has been solidified as a gay guy in my eyes. Some of his prominent exes include Porco, Jean and probably even Connie and Eren at some point, and he is very much in love with his partner Bert and the family they’ve made for themselves :’]
Colgel
💙 Flegel - Trans pan guy who uses He/him! Boss of the Reeves Company, donates money to charity and works with Historia’s orphanage to employ LGBTQ+ youth who have been kicked out of their homes. His headquarters also doubles as a safe space for anyone who needs it; he loves his community and does what he can to give back. I think he told his dad he was trans when he was still alive, and although he wasn’t sure what to think at first, he was very supportive (as was his mother and sister) and Flegel was able to get on puberty blockers and then eventually transition. He adores his husband and their son Sullivan (who is also a trans man, which is something they bond over) 💙 Colt - Trans gay guy who uses He/him! - As the eldest of the batch of Warrior cadets he was a part of, Udo, Zofia, Gabi and Falco regarded him as a role model. He had been out as a trans guy for a few years at that point, which led to a bond between himself and Gabi Braun, who had come out to her cousin Reiner when they were younger that she was a trans girl. Even now they’re still very close, as are their children. His family was very supportive, and when Falco called him “brother” for the first time he probably bawled like a baby. He’s very family-oriented, and when he isn’t busy with work or coaching baseball he’s a mentor for LGBTQ+ kids at the Reeves Company support group :]
Concosha
💙 Niccolo - Trans demisexual/pan guy who uses He/him! A well-renowned Marleyan chef, the husband of the village idiots of the 104th, and a father to numerous children. I’m not entirely sure what Niccolo's backstory should be, but perhaps his family wasn’t as supportive as they should've been, so he left home and found a new one in the cooking industry. Fell in love with Sasha first but after being a part of her family with Connie as their boyfriend, he fell for both. Has grown softer with age, and probably helps tutor other young and upcoming chefs :] Has yet to reconnect with his parents, but little does he know that they’ve kept newspaper clippings of their son’s successes and, while too ashamed to reach out, are so incredibly proud of him 💙 Connie - Polyamorous cis pan dude who uses He/him! Still a goofball even into adulthood, lover of practical jokes and his family. He and Sasha have entertained various partners over the years prior to Niccolo (a notable example being Jean and Marco, the five of them, now including Niccolo, still get together every so often), but something about Niccolo just...fit right with them. He’s very fond of standing on top of stools or grabbing his husband down by his jacket to smooch him, as well as sneak-tasting new recipes and getting chased out of the kitchen with a spatula 💙 Sasha - Polyamorous trans bi woman who uses She/her! I know in the first timeskip Connie is taller than Sasha but I’m very fond of Sasha being taller than him, and Connie being a lil manlet is funny to me so IT IS LAW. A chubby archer who is very affectionate with her husbands, Sasha has a lot of love in her heart. Two of her most notable crushes include Ymir and Mikasa. She’s a wonderful mother to her children, and she’s incredibly grateful that her parents were so supportive of her. Adopted Kaya when she rescued her and the two bond over being trans ladies

Music for Films, Vol. II: Chick Habit
Tumblr media
For good and for ill, Quentin Tarantino’s movies have been strongly associated with postmodern pop culture — particularly by folks whose reactions to the word “postmodern” tend toward pursed lips and school-marmishly wagged fingers. There for a while, reading David Denby on Tarantino was similar to reading Michiko Kakutani on Thomas Pynchon: almost always the same review, the same complaints about characters lacking “psychological depth,” the same handwringing over an ostensible moral insipidness. Truth be told, Tarantino’s pranksome delight with flashy surfaces and stylistic flourishes that are ends in themselves gives tentative credence to some of the caviling. Critics have raised related concerns over the superficiality of Tarantino’s tendency toward stunt casting, especially his resurrections of aging actors relegated to the film industry’s commercial margins: John Travolta, Pam Grier, Robert Forster, David Carradine, Darryl Hannah, Don Johnson and so on. There might be a measure of cynicism in the accompanying cinematic nudging and winking, but it’s also the case that a number of the performances have been terrific.
The writer-director brings a similar sensibility to his sound-tracking choices, demonstrating the cooler-than-thou, deep-catalog knowledge of an obsessive crate-digger. Tarantino thematized that knowledge in his break-through feature, Reservoir Dogs (1992). Throughout the film, the characters tune in to Steven Wright deadpanning as the deejay of “K-Billy’s Super Sounds of the Seventies”; like the characters, the viewer transforms into a listener, treated to such fare as the George Baker Selection’s “Little Green Bag” (1970) and Harry Nilsson’s “Coconut” (1971). As with the above-mentioned actors, Tarantino has sifted pop culture’s castoffs and detritus, unearthing songs and delivering experiences of renewed value — and thereby proving the keenness of his instincts and aesthetic wit. “Listen to (or look at) this!” he seems to say, with his cockeyed, faux-incredulous grin. “Can you believe you were just going to throw this out?” And mostly, it works. If the Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling” (1974) has become a sort of semi-ironized accompaniment to hipsterish good times, that resonance has a lot more to do with Tim Roth, Harvey Keitel and Co. cruising L.A. in a hulking American sedan than with the Disney Co.’s Guardians of the Galaxy (2014).
In Death Proof (2007), Tarantino’s seventh film and unaccountably his least favorite, soundtrack and screen are both full to bursting with the flotsam and jetsam of “entertainment” conceived as an industry.
youtube
In just the opening minutes, we see outmoded moviehouse announcements, complete with cigarette-burn cue dots; big posters of Brigitte Bardot from Les Bijoutiers du claire de lune (1958) and of Ralph Nelson’s Soldier Blue (1970) bedecking the apartment of Jungle Julia (Sydney Tamiia Poitier); the tee shirt worn by Shanna (Jordan Ladd), which bears the image of Tura Satana; and strutting under all of it are the brassy cadences of Jack Nitzsche’s “The Last Race,” taken from his soundtrack for the teensploitation flick Village of the Giants (1965). Bibs and bobs, bits and pieces of low- and middle-brow cinema are cut up and reconstructed into a fulsome swirl of signs. And there’s an unpleasant edge to it; the cuts are echoed by the action of the camera, which has been busily cleaving the bodies of the women on screen into fragments and parts. First the feet of Arlene (Vanessa Ferlito), propped up on a dashboard; then Julia, all ass and gams; then Arlene’s lower half again, chopped into slices by the stairs she dashes up (“I gotta take the world’s biggest fucking piss!”) and by the close-up that settles on her belly and pelvis, her hand shoved awkwardly into her crotch.
As often happens in Tarantino’s movies, furiously busy meta-discursive play collapses the images’ problematic content under multiple levels of reference and pastiche. The film is one half of Grindhouse (2007), Tarantino’s collaboration with his buddy Robert Rodriguez, an old-fashioned double-feature comprising the men’s love letters to the exploitation cinema of the 1960s and 1970s. In those thousands of movies — mondo, beach-cutie, nudie-cutie, women in prison, early slasher, rape-revenge, biker gang, chop-socky, Spaghetti Western and muscle-car-worship flicks (and we could add more subgenres to the list) — symbolic violence inflicted on women’s bodies was de rigueur, and frequently the principal draw. Tarantino shot Death Proof himself, so he is (more than usually) directly responsible for all the framing and focusing — and he’s far too canny a filmmaker not to know precisely what he’s doing with and to those bodies. The excessive, camera-mediated gashing and trimming is a knowing, perhaps deprecating nod to all that previous, gratuitous T&A. His sound-tracking choice of “The Last Race” metaphorically underscores the point: in Bert I. Gordon’s Village of the Giants, bikini-clad teens find and consume an experimental growth serum, which causes them to expand to massive proportions. Really big boobs, actual acres of ass. Get it?
Of course, all the implied japing and judging is deeply embedded in the film’s matrix of esoteric references and fleeting allusions. You’d have to be very well versed in the history of exploitation cinema to pick up on the indirect homage to Gordon’s goofy movie. But as in Reservoir Dogs, Tarantino doesn’t just gesture, he dramatizes, folding an authoritative geekdom into the action of Death Proof. In the set-up to Death Proof’s notorious car crash scene, Julia is on the phone, instructing one of her fellow deejays to play “Hold Tight!” (1966) by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich. Don’t recognize the names? “For your information,” Julia snorts, Pete Townsend briefly considered abandoning the Who, and he thought about joining the now-obscure beat band, to make it “Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick, Tich & Pete. And if you ask me, he should have.”
youtube
It’s among the most gruesomely violent sequences in Tarantino’s films (which do not run short on graphic bloodshed), and Julia receives its most spectacular punishment. Those legs and that rump, upon which the camera has lavished so much attention, are torn apart. Her right leg flips, flies and slaps the pavement, a hunk of suddenly flaccid meat. Again, Tarantino proves himself an adept arranger of image, sign and significance. Want to accuse him of fetishizing Julia’s legs? He’ll materialize the move, reducing the limb to a manipulable fragment, and he’ll invest the moment with all of the intrinsic violence of the fetish. He’ll even do you one better — he’ll make that violence visible. Want to watch? You better buckle up and hold tight.
Hold on a second. “Hold Tight”? The soundtrack has passed over from intertextual in-joke to cruel punchline. It doesn’t help that the song is so much fun, and that it’s fun watching the girls groove along to it, just before Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) obliterates them, again and again and again. The awful insistence of the repetition is another set-up, establishing the film’s narrative logic: the repeated pattern and libidinal charge-and-release of Stuntman Mike’s vehicular predations. It is, indeed, “a sex thing,” as Sheriff Earl McGraw (Michael Parks) informs us in his cartoonish, redneck lawman’s drawl. Soon the sexually charged repetitions pile up: see Abernathy’s (Rosario Dawson) feet hanging out of Kim’s (Tracie Thom) 1972 Mustang, in a visual echo of Arlene’s, and of Julia’s. Then listen to Lee (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) belt out some of Smith’s cover of “Baby It’s You” (1969), which we most recently heard 44 minutes before, as Julia danced ecstatically by the Texas Chili Bar’s jukebox. Then watch Abernathy as she sees Stuntman Mike’s tricked-out ’71 Nova, a vibrating hunk of metallic machismo — just like Arlene saw it, idling menacingly back in Austin, with another snatch of “Baby It’s You” wisping through that moment’s portent.
For a certain kind of viewer, the Nova’s low-slung, growling charms are hard to resist, as is the sleazy snarl of Willy DeVille’s “It’s So Easy” (1980; and we might note that Jack Nitzsche produced a couple of Mink DeVille’s early records, connecting another couple strands in the web) on the Nova’s car stereo. Those prospective pleasures raise the question of just who the film is for. That may seem obvious: the same folks — dudes, mostly — who find pleasure in exploitation movies like Vanishing Point (1971), Satan’s Sadists (1969) or The Big Doll House (1971). But there are a few other things to account for, like how Death Proof repeatedly passes the Bechdel Test, and how long those scenes of conversation among women go on, and on. Most notable is the eight-minute diner scene, a single take featuring Abernathy, Kim, Lee and Zoë (Zoë Bell, doing a cinematic rendition of her fabulous self, an instance of stunt casting that literalizes the “stunt” part). Among other things, the women discuss their careers in film, the merits of gun ownership and Kim and Zoë’s love of (you guessed it) car chase movies like Vanishing Point. One could read that as a liberatory move, a suggestion that cinema of all kinds is open to all comers. All that’s required is a willingness to watch. But watching the diner scene becomes increasing claustrophobic. The camera circles the women’s table incessantly, and on the periphery of the shot, sitting at the diner’s counter, is Stuntman Mike. The circling becomes predatory, the threat seems pervasive.
If you’ve seen the film, you know how that plays out: Zoë and Kim play “ship’s mast” on a white 1970 Dodge Challenger (the Vanishing Point car); Stuntman Mike shows up and terrorizes them mercilessly; but then Abernathy, Zoë and Kim chase him down and beat the living shit out of him, likely fatally. In another sharply conceived cinematic maneuver, Tarantino executes a climactic sequence that inverts the diner scene: the women surround Stuntman Mike, abject and pleading, and punch and kick him as he bounces from one of them to another. The camera zips from vantage to vantage within the circle, deliriously tracking the action. All the jump cuts intensify the violence, and they provide another contrast to the diner’s scene’s silky, unbroken shot. The sounds and the impact of the blows verge on slapstick, and our identification with the women makes it a giddily gross good time.
youtube
So, an inversion seeks to undo repetition. Certainly, Stuntman Mike’s intent to repeat the car-crash-kill-thrill is undone, and predator becomes prey. But, as is inevitable with Tarantino’s cinema, there are complications, other echoes and patterns to suss out. For instance: as the women stride toward the wrecked Nova, while Stuntman Mike pathetically wails, the camera zooms in on their asses. Bad asses? Nice asses? What’s the right nomenclature? To make sure we can put the shot together with Julia’s first appearance in the film, Abernathy has hiked up her skirt, revealing a lot of leg. Repetition reasserts itself. In an exacerbating circumstance, Harvey Weinstein’s grubby fingerprints are smeared onto the film. Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios is credited with production of Grindhouse, but Dimension Films, a Weinstein Brothers company, handled distribution.
When the film cuts to its end titles, we hear April March’s “Chick Habit” (1995), with its spot-on lyric: “Hang up the chick habit / Hang it up, daddy / Or you’ll never get another fix.” And so on. Even here, where the girl-power vibe feels strongest (cue Abernathy burying a bootheel in Stuntman Mike’s face), there are echoes, patterns. Note how the striding bassline of “Chick Habit” strongly recalls the pulse beating through Nitzsche’s “The Last Race.” Note that March’s song is a cover, of “Laisse tomber les filles,” originally recorded by yé-yé girl France Gall. The song was penned by Serge Gainsbourg, pop provocateur and notorious womanizer. The two collaborated again, releasing “Les Sucettes,” a tune about a teeny-bopper who really likes sucking on lollipops, when Gall was barely 18; the accompanying scandal nearly torpedoed her career. Gall refused to ever sing another song by Gainsbourg, and disavowed her hits.
Again, that’s all deeply embedded, somewhere in the film’s complicated play of pop irony and double-entendre and the sudden explosions of delight and disgust that intermittently reveal and conceal. Again, you’d have to know your pop history really well to catch up with the complications, and Death Proof moves so fast that there’s always another reference or allusion demanding your attention as the cars growl and the blood spurts. Too many signs to track, too many signals to decipher — that’s the postmodern. But perhaps we have become too glib, assuming that all signs are somehow equivalent. Death Proof insists otherwise. Much has been made of the film’s strange relation to digital filmmaking, of the sort that Rodriguez has made a career out of. Part of Grindhouse’s shtick is its goofball applications of CGI, all the scratches and skips and flaws that the filmmakers lovingly applied. They are digital effects, masquerading as damaged celluloid. Tarantino cut back against that grain, filming as much of the car chase’s maniacal stuntwork in meatspace as he safely could. Purposeful practical filmmaking, for a digitally enhanced cinematic experience, attempting to mimic the ways real film interacts with the physical environment and its manifold histories. Is that clever, or just more cultural clutter?
Amid all the clutter that crowds the characters onscreen, and their conversations in the film’s field of sound, it can be easy to lose track of the distinctions between appearances and the traces of the real bodies that worked to bring Death Proof to life. Which is why Tarantino’s inclusion of Bell is so crucial. She provides another inversion: Instead of masking her individual presence, doing stunts for other actresses in their clothes and hair (for Lucy Lawless in Xena: Warrior Princess, or for Uma Thurman in Tarantino’s Kill Bill films), Bell is herself, doing what she does best, projecting the technical elements of filmmaking — usually meant to bleed seamlessly into illusion — right onto the surface of the screen. And instead of allowing one group of girls to slip into a repeated pattern, bodies easily exchanged for other bodies, Bell’s presence and its implicit insistence on her particularity (who else can move like she does?) breaks up the superficial logic of cinema’s market for the feminine. She disrupts its chick habit. There’s only one woman like her.

She attends university in 1996 and the ending is taking place in the summer of 1998. We don’t see all of the guys in this part, but they will be making more appearances as the story goes on! A big thank you to @sexgodashton for going over this with a fine tooth comb and to @spicycal and @softbabiestan for being my cheerleaders.                When Michelle Morgan left the small town of Charming at the age of eighteen to pursue her dream career, she knew she was leaving behind more than her parents and baby brother, Matty. She was leaving behind a group who she’d grown up with. Many said that her childhood sweetheart would leave her in the dust, break her heart whilst she was in the big city, studying her chosen profession. But those many knew nothing about her hometown life.
Growing up with the Irwin’s had been something of a blessing for her. The Morgan’s took it as the sign that it was, because nobody in Charming messed with the Irwin’s. Although her father had never joined SAMCRO—the known biker gang who ran many things off the books as well as their mechanics business—he fully supported them, helping out with transport when they needed it.
Her friendship with Ashton—the only son of Anne-Marie and Bert Irwin—only formed because she’d been cornered by the playground bullies at the age of five, and her vicious kicks to their shins followed by Ashton pulling them away from her had the two kids as thick as thieves since.
They’d been childhood sweethearts from the get go, and with the rest of SAMCRO being an influence in her life, her father knew that she was going to be involved somehow. Her mother  first mentioned being Ashton’s “Old Lady” when they were sixteen—celebrating her sixteenth birthday no less—causing both teens to blush furiously at her words. The other club members had laughed, and despite her bright red face, she scoffed.
“Don’t like the idea of that, lil’ lady?” Bert teased her, the nickname filled with nothing but the affection that he and Anne both had for Michelle.
“Someone is gonna have to pull your sorry asses outta the fire when your plans go to shit. That’s gonna be me. I’m gonna study and get into those bigshot firms. And I’m gonna come back and keep the lotta you out of trouble.” She missed Ashton’s look of awe, but the other club members hadn’t.
But her words had hit home for them, and so they toasted her luck on her sixteenth birthday.
That night, when the two were hidden away in their den—despite what their parents assumed when Ashton pulled her away—they were lay on the various throws and pillows that lived on the floor, cuddled up as he played with her fingers, gently bringing her knuckles up to his lips.
“Did you mean that Micha? You really gonna go away for however long it takes to be a big shot lawyer?” When it was just the two of them, he never hid from her. The fear was laid out for her to see.
“It’s gonna be seven years of school at least. Maybe a couple more to work with the big firms and get cases under my belt.”
The silence that followed wasn’t uncomfortable. Silence for them never had been since he’d confessed that he loved her when they were fourteen and had loved her since they were six.
“Ten years is a long time, sweetheart.” She turned in his arms to face him, her eyes searching his face. She could see the fear sitting there, plain as day for her.
“It is. But I’m not letting you go, Irwin. We’ve got ten years of love on our side, with another two before I’d have to go to University. Surely we can make it through another ten? I know your dad won’t put you on any of the runs, not till you turn twenty one. Which means we got four years of unfiltered time for you coming to visit, right?”
“Of course.” He whispered, his lips brushing against hers softly. “Reckon you’ll let me into your pants before you leave?” And she giggled, his own face lighting up in joy.
“Reckon you can wait till I’ve gotta leave. I know you’re not gonna complain when my lips can be put to better use for the next two years.” He rolled over with a playful growl, pinning her down which earned a small giggle as he playfully nipped at her neck.
“I reckon I can do that. But, I’ve gotta treat my birthday girl tonight.” His lips met hers and she didn’t argue.
When she was accepted into University, the club had celebrated with her, watching in anticipation for her acceptance. She’d studied so hard for her entrance exams and had already imparted some knowledge to Bert to keep him out of trouble.
Her first year had been daunting. Ashton visited her once a month at most thanks to the cost of gas, but it was enough for them.
That was when people began to tell her that they’d never last.
Men in her class would tell her that she’d be better off with them, but Michelle held her own. They didn’t like that. They tried to get vicious with her in the mock court sessions and various debates, but she had a secret weapon.
She’d grown up with SAMCRO, and in the words of Chibs, “she’s got balls of diamond that one”. Ashton had laughed at his words, and she’d thrown the drinks mat at his face, making the other club members laugh.
When she’d come home for the holidays, Bert had heard enough from Ashton to track her down and ask her if she wanted a second layer of protection.
“I can’t give you Ashton, I need him here unfortunately. Him and Hood get into enough trouble.” This made her grin.
“Throw in Hemmings and Clifford, and that’s going to be a disaster when they start doing runs.” Bert had snorted at her words.
“Either it’ll be crazy enough that it’ll work or a disaster.” He muttered before pulling the two of them back on track. “Instead of Ash, I figured it was about time that Chibs and I taught you how to shoot a gun, don’t you think?”
“I know how to shoot a gun,” came back the retort, and Bert smiled.
“Ah, but from a moving vehicle? And what about awareness of your surroundings, lil’ lady?” Michelle paused before reluctantly shaking her head at his questions.
“I guess not.” She finally muttered and he grinned.
“Chibs and I will start you tomorrow. Ash can come as well. Maybe get him to rope Hood, Hemmings and Clifford into it. The four of them are gonna be a force to reckon with when he takes over.”
“Oh no bet on that one. Cal will be his VP. You need to make sure that Bobby doesn’t murder them when they prank him because you know he’s gonna be their easy target.”
The two of them made their way back into the Irwin household. Michelle laughed as her little brother rushed to greet her. It had definitely been strange being away from Matty for so long.“You’re not wrong. C’mon lil’ lady. You’ve been missed by a lot of people.”
He’d guided her into the main dining and sitting room to find nearly all of the club there along with what was considered the next generation of club members. All of the younger members kept away from the free flowing alcohol, knowing that the following day was going to be daunting as it was. Michelle was happy enough to stay sober to talk to her parents and sit with Matty on her lap, listening to him going on about all the things he’d done in the months that she’d been away.
Ashton barely left her side.
The following morning felt like it was straight out of the movies. But she knew that this was the reality for the club members who did the various runs.
Unsurprisingly, Ashton helped both Bert and Chibs. Michelle hadn’t expected anything less from her boyfriend, but even then, it still stunned her the trust that he had in her not to hit him with a bullet when it came to being aware of club members versus rivals.
“Am I gonna really need to know this kinda stuff?” The complaint had been good natured, but the elder Irwin understood her hesitation. He hadn’t risen to her complaint, making her go through their course again. It was late afternoon before Chibs finally called to a halt, and they began to pack down, making sure nothing was left behind.
Once they were ready to go, Bert motioned for the other two to head off. Ashton scowled for a moment before his dad sighed.
“I just need to talk with your girl. I’ve got intel on her uni, and you need to go meet with Hood. the Harris’ have payments due.” With a quick kiss to his girlfriend, Ashton handed Michelle her helmet and then he was gone with Chibs.
“C’mon lil’ lady.” She didn’t hesitate to climb on the back of Bert’s bike. It was a level of freedom that she understood and part of her wanted her own to travel back to uni with, to show those men who thought she was easy that no one messed with her.
The drive wasn’t too far out of Charming. It was mostly desert, but there was a little spot that gave a nice view of the town.
When the bike was parked up, Michelle was off first, heading to a small bench that had been left there by a previous resident.
“Ashton’s gonna be Club Prez one day. You and I both know this.” Michelle did know this. Both her and Ashton had known since they were kids. Ashton had always so desperately wanted to follow in his dad’s footsteps.
“What time frame?” She finally asked, turning her head to the man who had turned into a second father for her.
“Maybe by the time he’s twenty five. I’ve been CP for nearly forty years, and it’s time to retire for me.” This shocked Michelle, her eyes going wide.
“But, Ash thought he wouldn’t be Prez til he was in his late thirties at least?” The surprise that coloured Michelle’s tone made Bert laugh as he threw his arm around her shoulders, squeezing her gently as he kissed her temple.
“I’m glad that you both have faith in this old man. But unlike the others, I wanna be able to spoil my grandchildren when they come. I’m surprised that my boy hasn’t made an honest woman outta you.”
Michelle blushed, making him laugh. “Shove off old man.” She groaned, pushing away from him, making him laugh even more.
“I just wanna know, what’s gonna happen. That’s all.” He raised his hands in surrender, and she sighed.
“We talked about it before I left in September. I want to finish school. He knows I’m already planning to spend maybe a couple of years in the big city in a firm so I have a few cases under my belt. He also knows that I want him. I never really wanted anyone else.”
“And I know that, lil’ lady. That’s why I want to help you protect yourself. When Ashton becomes Club Prez, you know we’ve got problems that he’ll inherit. The second they find out you’re a lawyer? That’s a pretty lookin’ red target painted on your forehead.”
Michelle nodded. “That’s why you had me take out the opposition vs our own.”
Bert nodded. “I don’t anticipate you being part of the club like that. But if you get into a situation, I’ll be relieved to know that one of my girls can get away safely. You know we’d be devastated if we lost you, Anne-Marie especially.” Michelle felt her heart swell for this man and his wife.
Her parents were good to her, and she knew that. And so were the Irwin’s. But knowing that they valued her like a daughter already made her appreciate just what she had in her life.
“At least by the time I’m finished with school, I’ll be there to haul his ass out of the fire coals.” Her murmured words made Bert laugh before patting her knee.
“And he’d be lucky to have you hauling his ass from the fires. C’mon lil’ lady. Let's get back before he goes off at me. I know you’re only here for a few more weeks, and he wants to spend as much time with you as possible.”
When the two of them returned, Ashton didn’t hesitate to almost drag Michelle out to the den that they’d built as teenagers, making Bert laugh at her exasperated eye roll. But once the two of them were secluded away from the world, she happily nestled against him, their clothes long gone as she traced his tattoos.
“What was dad after?” His fingers ran up and down her spine, her body melting against him as she fought to keep her eyes open.
“Told me why he was doing that today, why he wanted me to know how to at least fight back.” She murmured and his lips pressed against the top of her head.
“And why would that be, sweetheart?” Her head tilted up so that her chin could rest on his chest, her eyes catching his.
“You’re gonna be Prez eventually, Ash. Everyone and their mother know about us. He’s worried that when you take over, you’ll be inheriting problems he’s been dealing with for years. Just being associated with you paints a target on my back. When they find out that we’re together? That target moves to my forehead.” There was no way to paint it nicely, but Ashton understood, even if there was crease between his brows at her words.
“Hopefully being in the big city takes it away, you’re out of town for too long.” She smiled sadly at him before letting the subject drop.
“He also asked why you haven’t made an honest woman out of me. I think he forgets we’re only eighteen, and I’ve barely been away for six months.” Ashton laughed, and the mood changed drastically as she shifted, straddling his hips.
“Trust me sweetheart, when I’ve saved up, I’ll be making an honest woman outta you. Those big shots can get fucked when they see a nice, shiny diamond on your finger.”
“Oh there better be a shiny diamond eventually, Irwin.” He laughed as she leaned down to kiss him.
Time passed by for them. Whilst he was saving up the money he earned from helping the club and working with Bobby in the garage, Michelle worked her ass off.
Despite repeatedly telling men that she was taken, none really believed it. However, when she landed a few punches after one of them got too handsy with her, they quickly realised that it didn’t matter what they believed.
She could fight back, and she could put them down quicker than they’d ever be able to step away from.
When Ashton had found out, he’d taken a month away, despite Bert half-heartedly arguing, he realised that if anything, it would keep her safer if they saw what kind of boyfriend she had.
She was surprised when he turned up after her lecture to pick her up. The roar of the bike engine was so familiar that it sounded out of place in the big city.
Michelle had been chatting with Jennifer, as they’d left, deliberately ignoring the few guys that seemed to invite themselves along. When Jen had spotted her ride, she hesitated, unwilling to leave Michelle with the guys from their course, circling around her like vultures.
“I can see if Jack could drop you off, save you from these creeps?” They shared a giggle.
“Thanks but I need to head to the bar. Old Jerry wants me to stop by soon to try his new cocktails...” The roar of the engine made her pause, her eyes immediately searching out the sound.
“Chelle?” Jen had prodded her to get her attention, but once Michelle spotted the bike, her face lit up in undisguised glee.
“I don’t need to worry about getting a ride, mine just arrived.” The guys that had been lingering, scoffed.
“Really Morgan? You’re going after a lowlife, probably with no stable job and an arrest record?” She wasn’t sure of his name, Mike or Marc, but his words triggered her anger. As the bike pulled up, she spun around, ready to punch him before remembering where she was.
“If I wasn’t so determined to become a lawyer, I’d have decked you with no hesitation. However, that apparent lowlife has been my best friend since we were kids. Add in the fact he’s literally the love of my life, and you get the picture. No arrest record, his dad runs and owns a garage that he’s set to inherit one day and not to mention, I like my men a little rough around the edges. How about you go fuck the blow up doll your buddies got you for Christmas and get off my fucking ass.” She snapped and she watched as he glanced behind her.
“He gonna come in and save you then?” This time, she smirked.
“When you run around with men that look like they could kill you, you get taught how to defend yourself from creepy assholes. Try it and see where this will get you. Not to mention that I’m a scholarship student. Why would I jeopardize this chance for a career?” Her voice had turned innocent, sweet. But the dare was laid for all to hear.
“You’re an ugly bitch anyway.” He finally muttered before turning on his heel and leaving. She shared a look with Jen before they both started laughing. Michelle hugged her friend goodbye before running to where Ashton was standing, leaning against his bike.
The hindrance of her skirt meant that he could only pick her up and swing her around, but she was finally in the safest place.
“It’s been a minute.” She finally breathed when their lips pulled away, his smile only having grown wider.
“I know, but there are reasons. However, you’ve got me for a good chunk of time, doll.” This made her light up in excitement.
“How much time?” His smile was impossibly wide at this point as he dipped his head to kiss her once more.
“At least a month.” His voice was low, setting the fire off in her belly, but even that couldn’t squelch the joy that surged through her as she kissed him.
“Lets head back to mine then, handsome. I’ve got some new things for you to enjoy.” He had to swallow his reply as she got herself sat on the bike, a laugh escaping at the put-out look on her face.
“Sorry doll, but it looks so strange to see you dressed like that on my bike.”
“Yeah, yeah. Laugh it up. I haven’t got much of a choice. Dumb dress codes.” Ashton ignored her dar mutter as he placed her helmet on for her before climbing on and kicking the bike into life.
She’d missed the feeling of the bike underneath her. The way the engine rumbled was a reassurance, something that had come with years of riding around with Ashton and being taught to ride by Bert. It was a level of freedom that she never felt in the city, so enclosed and overrun with either pedestrians or cas. Bikes were around, but not ones like these, they were more what Bobby would call flashy toys, built for speed but would never survive one of the runs they did.
When Ashton pulled up to Michelle’s place, there were nosey neighbours who peered from their windows to see what the noise was about. She outright ignored them as she took Ashton’s hand and led him up the stone steps to the house she was renting, the door barely closed before he had her pressed against the wall with his lips on hers.
This was another thing she missed as she sighed into the kiss, the soft moan escaping as hands pushed up her skirt, and he began to tease.
“Do you think you’ll get complaints about any noise?” He murmured as his lips moved to her neck and she moaned at the sensations.
“Don’t care.”
She didn’t hold back and neither did he.
When they were nestled up in her bed, having gotten their welcome home out of their systems, Michelle was dozing off against his chest when he leaned over to the floor, rummaging through his jacket pockets.
“What are you doing? I had a comfy pillow.” She muttered indignantly. He chuckled.
“I had a whole thing planned out, but being with you like this? Honestly it's the best moment I think.”
This had her confused as he resumed his previous position but this time, she tilted her head so that it was resting on his chest, staring at him.
“And what moment would that be, Irwin?” He gave her the softest smile, one which she knew was reserved just for her.
“The moment to tell you that I’ve loved you for nearly my entire life, and I don’t want a life without you in it. Michelle Morgan, will you marry me?” he had the ring in his hands, and she couldn’t stop the gasp as she sat up, staring at him in shock.
“Ashton, this better not be a joke.” The tears threatened to fall and there was the soft smile again as he leaned forward to kiss her.
“I would never joke about this. You’re too important to me, Micha.”
The first tear fell as she moved her trembling left hand, offering it to Ashton.
“Yes. Yes I will marry you.” The joy on his face in that moment sealed it for Michelle. As he slid the ring on her finger, he kissed it before his lips found hers once more.
“My sun, my moon, my stars.” He whispered.
When she went into her class on Monday, Jen was the first to notice the very shiny diamond ring on her finger.
“Oh my god, really?” Her friend gasped excitedly before pulling her into a hug. Michelle laughed.
“Really! He had this whole elaborate plan set out but ditched it because it didn’t feel like us. He wants to celebrate, but since he’s staying for the month, his brothers are going to travel up for celebrations next week. Ash wants to meet you and Jack and have a quiet double date before his brothers show up.”
There were a few mutters from the men around them, but the two girls paid them no attention like they’d done from day one when the two realised they were the only females in the class.
“The only reason she’s getting married is because he probably knocked her up.” Mike-she was certain now after hearing his name called out on the register-muttered.
This time, she wasn’t going to let him slander her name like that. Those kinds of rumours not only fuelled fire but could potentially cost Michelle her career, and she wasn’t about to have any of it.
Turning in her seat whilst they waited for the lecturer to start, she scowled at him.
“Kindly refrain from making assumptions and starting rumours that you can’t back up with facts, O’Riley.” She kept her voice levelled, albeit slightly condescending. He scowled at her in return.
“What, scared that I’m right?” The taunt was a clear bait, determined to show she shouldn't be there. Both her and Jen had suffered from them.
The class had fallen silent at this, and Michelle smirked.
“How about I give you the facts first since you’ve spent the entirety of first year trying to make a point that neither Jennifer or I belong. I’ve known my fiance since we were children. Five years old to be precise. Whilst I’m at school, he works for the garage that his dad owns and will one day take over. He tries his hardest to visit once a month but sometimes he can’t because of obligations to the company means that sometimes the garage comes first.” She could see a few of the guys take on board her words.
Jen was smirking.
“If he were to have knocked me up, the last time I saw him was two and a half months ago. Notice how I haven’t swapped to any kinds of baggy clothing? Had I actually been pregnant, I’d have taken a leave of absence for a week so that I could go home and tell him as well as our families. Getting the picture yet?” His cheeks were burning as she so easily put him in his place.
“You have a go at the two of us, saying we don’t belong because we can’t be doing our studies right, we can’t be learning the same things as men. But if I look objectively at the situation, you’ve repeatedly tried to bait Chelle into an argument and lost every time. Most facts she’s been quite open about, and the others seemed to have put two and two together, but you can’t let go of the fact that she rejected you. So you hound her for anything. I hope that if you actually get into Law School after the undergrad program that you have to face her in the courts, because she’s clearly better than you.” Jennifer had spoken up in defence of her friend, and it had fallen silent before the lecturer began to clap.
Michelle hadn’t even realised that they’d eaten into the class time.
“Miss Morgan is correct, Mr O’Riley. Report to my office after class.”
Unsurprisingly, O’Riley left her alone, and before Michelle knew it, the end of the year was upon them and she was back home with her family.
She hadn’t had a chance to really pass the news and had forced Calum, Luke and Michael to stay quiet about it. Ashton knew better than to ruin this surprise for her, even though her family had been waiting for the day to happen ever since he’d asked her father’s permission the day after she’d left.
To say they were excited was understatement of the century. Both of them had winced at the high pitched squeal from her mother and her father was laughing at the scene before him.
They welcomed Ashton into their family when he was a child, but this was a different kind of welcome, one that really made him feel lucky to have the parents he had.
Unlike some of the weddings they’d seen from the club members, Ashton had been adamant. The wedding would be how Michelle wanted it, and if anyone had a problem then they could work at the garage instead.
Bert had surprisingly backed his son up.
“She’s practically been my daughter since he brought her home with a skinned knee and tear tracks down her face. This is her day just as much as his, and if Ash wants it to be how she wants it, then no one will say a fucking word.”
The prospects had eyed the father/son duo warily before nodding in acceptance. Ashton had already made it clear to them that they’d be around for security rather than the ceremony.
They’d watched one of their previous comrades learn the hard way not to insult Michelle Morgan around any of them. The last prospect who did that not only lost his chance to be in the club but also ended up in the hospital with broken arms and a bullet to the knee.
The warning rang loud and clear for them so they weren’t bothered by the fact they’d been relegated to security.
Despite the endless ribbing that Ashton had received from his best friends, he helped Michelle with ideas for what she wanted. They’d decided to plan and book it for the following summer, to let her get through her second year of university without worrying.
“I’m going to defer a year after we get married.” Ashton stared at her in shock. She’d told him that the career was important to her, and he couldn’t wrap his head around why she would do that.
He’d pulled her so that she was straddling his lap, the two of them sat on the sofa at his parents’. They were out for the weekend. He knew his dad was preparing for a patchover and his mom wanted as much time as possible with him without the two of them underfoot.
“And why are you deferring a year, doll?”
“So that I can steal you away for a year. Our honeymoon is going to be much longer than two weeks.” The grin on her lips was almost predatory, and he felt the corner of his own twitch up in response.
“Oh is it, Miss Morgan?” Her arms were resting on his shoulders as she leaned forwards, nibbling at the skin of his neck, her hips slowly rocking into his.
He was struggling to stay focused.
“A full year of us travelling. Motels, fancy hotels or hostels. Travel America and then maybe fly out and travel Europe. A whole year. I’m sure you wouldn’t be adverse to having sex in every state and then as much of Europe as possible.” Her teeth tugged at his earlobe, and he had her pinned on the couch, the look of shock amusing as his lips met hers.
“What my lady wants, my lady gets.”
Later when they’d redressed themselves and were looking at various places, Ashton let out a sigh. “You realise that it means I’ll definitely be doing more runs. And maybe a few hits?”
She squeezed his hand gently. “That’s why pops is planning on offering to pay for half of the trip. He knows what your dad does, they’re best friends. He knows what you do. He also knows that you’d protect me and move heaven and earth if you could. I wasn’t supposed to tell you this, so act surprised when he offers it.” This made him laugh as he kissed her temple.
“Secret is safe with me, doll. So July or August for the wedding date?”
True to his word, Ashton did act surprised when her dad made the offer, however, he didn’t have to fake his shock at the amount that he was offering.
“That’s, surely that would cover the entire trip?” Ashton barely breathed. Marcus Morgan laughed as he slapped Ashton on the shoulder.
“Son, I’ve been saving for this ever since she brought you home to us to introduce us to her newest best friend. At first it was small amounts which I was prepared to make her college fund, and then you two got together and her mother told me to start saving properly.” Ashton stared at his soon to be father-in-law, stunned.
He could do nothing but hug Marcus tightly in gratitude, in amazement, in awe. He wasn’t entirely sure. But he loved this man just as much as he loved his own dad.
Marcus understood the unspoken words and held onto Ashton just as tightly, giving him a moment to take in the significance of the offer.
“You realise that the second Michelle finds out, she’ll flip?” Ashton finally asked as he pulled back, and Marcus laughed loudly.
“Like I’d expect anything else from that girl. She’s her mother’s daughter through and through. I can only count my blessings that she found you early on to temper her impulses.” Ashton tried and failed to hide his smirk as his soon-to-be in-law rolled his eyes before they were drawn into a discussion about the newest modifications he’d made to his bike.
They still continued to plan, even when Michelle was back at University. Mercifully, after her verbal slapdown of O’Riley, both her and Jen had earned the grudging respect from their classmates.
That respect was a big help when it came to the appointments for her dress fittings and bridesmaid dresses. If Jen hadn’t been one of her bridesmaids, she knew her friend would’ve handed her any and all the notes she needed for missed classes however, both of them relied on the notes from their classmates and the occasional meeting with their tutors.
It was a much quieter year for both her and Ashton, despite all the appointments and meetings for the venues and vendors. It dawned on them how much work it took to pull off the wedding that they were planning, on top of their respective school work and jobs.
It was exhausting, but they pulled it off, she’d finished top of the class, with Jen close behind her and the business side for the Irwin’s had been thriving.
Before she really knew it, she was standing in the foyer of the church, gripping her dad’s arm to stop the butterflies causing havoc through her entire body, let alone her stomach.
“You nervous sweet girl?” Her dad's tone was reassurance of all these new exciting feelings. She let out a small breath of air as she finally let it sink in that it was just Ashton waiting for her.
She was marrying her best friend.
“Excited. I still can’t believe he agreed to let you practically pay for our entire trip.” It had been a constant disagreement until her mother had sat her down and told her why her dad was doing this.
“Call it payback for you actually telling him before I could.” And she felt her jaw drop. She knew that Ashton hadn’t told him, or at least they’d suspected she’d gotten away with her slip up.
Marcus chuckled as he gently tapped under her chin, her jaw shutting with an audible snap.
“Why didn’t you say anything?” She hissed dangerously, and he grinned in return, his eyes suspiciously bright as his hand lifted, the backs of his fingers tracing down her face. She relaxed into the comforting touch almost immediately.
“You’re my child. I’ve raised you and I know you. Ashton is also mine, even though your mother didn’t bring him into the world. The two of you grew up with your mom and I as well as his parents. You might be able to fool the world sweetheart, but you can never fool your parents.”
It was another sigh before she let out a snort of laughter.
“Figures.” The key changed in the music, and the butterflies were back with reckless abandon.
“Time to get the show on the road, sweet girl. I love you and I’m proud of you.” His lips touched her forehead, and it was almost like magic that her entire body relaxed. The butterflies finally settled as they began the walk down to her future husband.

RNM 3x01
Howdy partners! It's finally happened. Roswell New Mexico has come back from the war! Last night was super exciting. I agree with everyone that said it was like a brand new pilot episode. I have slowly but surely gotten more excited over the last year, ever since she who should not be named got the boot. And it looks like things can only go up from here.
If you're new to my blog, I try to do a review of each episode just giving my opinions and speculating on what's to come. It's a long read because I really dived into almost every aspect this time, so I'll put the rest under the cut.
So without further ado, let's dive right in!!!
Mopey Max is mopey.
I know he was reverting back to his old way of doing things in not telling Michael and Isobel about dying, but I have to believe that he did it to have good memories for himself as well as for his siblings. I don’t know. Maybe I’m being generous, but I’m willing to give him a little grace this season. It’s a new beginning, so maybe we’ll get some growth from him this season.
Not gonna lie, Heath is a hottie. I can see what Liz sees in him. He’s kinda like if Max and Kyle had a baby. I hate her boss though.
Love the pod squad hanging out together. They were very funny and very much like real siblings when they were in the mindscape. And Isobel digging on Michael about Alex was so good! Also, how has no one noticed that Max is shooting up acetone like heroine.?
I’m gonna surprise some folks, but I ain’t mad about Delmanes. I think Greg has chemistry with everyone and they established that Maria and Alex are still in contact (I’ll get to that in a minute.) So I don’t think he’s going to have a problem with them. Frankly, I think they are going to sweep the thing we all hate under the rug and never bring it up again. And I am a-okay with that! Y’all, I want to love Maria so badly! She was my absolute favorite character from the OG and if they have to forget about questionable things that we all know were a product of CAM self inserting, then I am ok with it. Besides, she’s cute and he’s cute and they can just be cute together. I also don’t think she was dragging Michael when they were talking. She made a comment about Michael’s bad boy demeanor. Something that he has been cultivating for over a decade now. And her saying that some things aren’t meant to be…… I mean are we going to argue that point or something? I could have told her that last season.
Also, I want to try some of Bert’s mead.
Kyliz!!! I love their friendship so much! Few people challenge Liz the way Kyle does. He treats her with so much respect, but doesn’t hesitate to call her out when she’s being stubborn. Go Team Liz!!!!!
Michael Guerin stopping to fix his hair before he welcomes Alex Manes back just about broke me y’all.😭😭😭😭😭😭 My sweet son! I love him so much!! And I am so proud of him. I think the old Michael would have walked right up and made some sarcastic comment. But this Michael is respecting Alex’s choices and being a real friend. I am truly sad we didn’t get any one-on-one Malex content, but I know that this is just setting us up for an amazing journey for our boys.
It was also gut-wrenching to see Alex stepping off that bus and being confronted with Jesse’s statue. But it was nice to see him smile when Forrest came to meet him. I am nowhere near a Forlex shipper, but it was good to see Alex happy for once. And Michael’s face when he saw them.😭😭😭😭😭😭My baby boy. I just want to hug him so badly!!
Kyle trying to help everyone was so wonderful to see. He’s the best person on that show. If only folks would listen to him!!! But I am intrigued by this vision.
Damn Tyler Blackburn is ripped! Good lord son. You are killing me!
So here’s where we come back to Maria. It’s kind of a throwaway line, but Alex checks his phone and says it’s his brother and Maria making sure he got in ok. (Followed by that super cringy did you get in ok line from Forrest.) (No wonder they weren’t exclusive after a year!) This shows me that Alex still considers Maria to be his best friend. There’s no flinch. No negative reaction. He just starts returning texts before Forrest starts revealing that he’s in Deep Sky.
Wyatt Long is such a douche.
HAHAHAHA!!!! Forrest is nothing more than a low-level henchman! I love it! And I can’t blame him for falling for Alex. Who could? But let me tell ya bud, keeping secrets like that is no way to ingratiate yourself to one Alex Manes. You could see the wheels turning in Alex’s head. How much does Deep Sky know? Is Michael in danger? What lengths will he have to go to to protect him? I’m finding Deep Sky to be quite fascinating.
Max’s brain manifesting Liz when her song comes on the radio was so sad. He loves her so much, but is just so bad at being a good partner. You know he just wants to see her one last time before he dies. And once again, bravo to everyone’s hero Dr. Kyle. He’s tired of Max keeping this a secret. I just love them together. They hate, yet respect each other. It makes for a very interesting dynamic.
I’m like Liz and Heath. They had fun shenanigans! I enjoy shenanigans. And of course she would leak their patent to keep it from becoming a wrinkle cream. Like a boss!
“It’s a cactus! There’s a flower on that testicle!” Wyatt, you are an idiot. But why would anyone think that tacking Linda on the end of Rosa would be all that they need to do to integrate Rosa back into society. She looks the same! At least give her a new hairdo. And Wyatt was right on the money when he pointed out she writes on her shoes just like she did before. They really shouldn’t have given up on the makeover from last year. She definitely needs a new style.
Michael’s speech about being happy the last year was so good. He was so happy to have his family back. So was Isobel. They are totally right to be angry with Max. He always makes the decisions and never asks them. Their heartbreak hearing that Max’s body was rejecting the heart just made me want to cry.
I also didn’t hate Michael’s interaction with Maria. It’s rough having to be friendly with an ex. But they did care very much for each other. It makes perfect sense that he would want to let her know about Max to keep her from trying to force more visions. And she would of course want to comfort him when he tells her. He’s losing his brother. I would react the same way if that were happening to any of my exes. Because that’s how normal people react. And there was nothing even remotely romantic about that scene. Her teasing him about Alex didn’t bother me because it was just an awkward attempt to get back to their previous banter-filled friendship. Will they ever get there? Who knows. (Well, I’m sure Chris does.)
KYBEL!!!!!!! I had forgotten how much I shipped them in s1. I am all for them getting together. I have had a big suspension that smelling rain was an indication of a cosmic connection. It’s been confirmed so far with Liz and Alex. And Kyle did say that Max smelled like rain last season. He just needs to get some alone time with Isobel when she doesn’t have on the undoubtedly expensive perfume that she wears. I just know he’s the one for her.
Max listening to Liz’s tape was so sad and beautiful.
Kylex! (Has anyone else noticed that all of the really great scenes featured Kyle?) He’s so great at being the voice of reason. And I love that they are friends. If anyone other than Michael can convince Alex to not join Deep Sky, it’s Kyle.
So here’s my theory on Wyatt. Of course he’s going to forget that he’s a racist piece of crap after being injected with Byterical(?). I think Rosa’s going to try to help him be a better person and maybe come to terms with Kate’s death. But I don’t think it’ll end well. They’ve already talked about how the mayor’s racist son is going to factor into things this season. I think he’s going to end up trying to re-corrupt Wyatt. Either he will succeed or Wyatt will end up sacrificing himself to save Rosa. It’s not ideal, but as long as there isn’t any kind of romance there, I can endure. (Also, that was Maria’s necklace not Rosa’s, dumbass Wyatt.)
I don’t trust Max’s one night stand. I know in the sneek peaks she’s shown to be a reporter, but I think she’s more than just that. Maybe it’s because I remember how horrible a character she played on Teen Wolf, but I just don’t trust her. She’s after something besides a story.
Sorry, Forrest. You messed up and let’s be honest. You never could compare to Michael. Alex’s reaction was so bittersweet. He trusted him. But he knows what he has to do now to protect the people he truly loves. And that’s exactly what he’s going to do. So buh-bye Forrest. It’s been real.
I think that the alien mask guys that attack Maria are going to be part of some kind of racist gang.
I’m veering away from thinking it’s Michael that’s going to die. Alex was pissed, not distraught.
Why does Jones look like he’s a bad yogi? The shirt and the rings? Aren’t you supposed to be naed in the pod? Did Michael and Isobel put those clothes on him? Howdy partner indeed!
So that’s my take this time around. It’s been a hell of a wait for this episode. But all in all I think it delivered!. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season. I think we’re going to have a blast this year! Till next time1 my lovelies!!!!

Yes, I still love Eren
Ok, I didn't want to write this whole post because I don't like to discuss with other people and I always try to be patient, be quiet and just ignore this kind of stuff and keep moving foward with my life, but this is getting on my nerves.
Sometimes I wonder if some people on this fandom are a bunch of kids or teenagers who never have read/watch cruel and complex fiction stories before, like Berserk, Game of thrones, Evangelion, The last of us, etc, or just people so dumb they can't differ ficction from reality...
Repeat with me: people can love villains, people can love drama and horror in ficction and that doesn't mean those people are bad :)
It's frustating being an Eren's fan, because some people just can't understand that you can love villains and characters who are assasins or a bad person IN FICTION without being pro genocide in real life. Seriously, people SHOULD know the difference between fiction and reallity.
I love Eren Jaeger, because he's complex, well written and one of the most interesting MC I've seen in my life. I love the "hero-to-villain" arcs (like Anakin Skywalker). I love a lot of characters who are not good people because of their complex backstories, personnality or conflicted development. Ex: Joel of TLOU murdered a lot of innocent people at the ending only to save ONE person, but you can understand why he's doing that, despite you don't like his actions.
Besides, you know what? "White and perfect" heroes are boring.
A lot of people is saying now "I hate Eren, uuuhhh, you're a bad person if you love him uhhhh, Eren is the worst, he's the baddest of all the characters, the members of Alliance are the only good ones, Eren must die" only because in the last chapter we've seen the collosals trampling babies... seriously?? Yeah, I was shocked too and I feel sick and sad the first time I read it, but I can deal with it because SnK was ALWAYS cruel.
I guess people just conveniently decided to forget a lot of details of the first arcs and seasons.
Heeey, remember when Annie killed a lot of soldiers, all the Levi's squad and a lot of innocent people in the Central district while she was fighting agains Eren and the Survey Corps? She even played to yo-yo with one the the soldiers hahah :D Do you remember that Eren DIDN'T want to fight agains her and only did it because his comrades Armin Mikasa, Jean, Connie, Levi and others FORCED HIM to fight? oh, and innocent children suffered and died too in the middle of that fight. But of course, people just don't talk about it, because now Annie is now one of the cute wifeys of the "group of good heroes" :) (I love Annie and aruani, btw, but I just hate when some people are so hypocrytes to love Annie, Reiner and Bert, and also the members of Alliance and just sentence Eren for do something he was obligated to do to save his people, same as the Warriors tried to do to before to save people of Marley)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eren tried to find a pacific way to resolves the problems during 4 years. He infiltrated in Marley alone, cutted his leg and hurt his eye, and talked with Reiner, only to try to understand his actions. But while he was forgiving his enemy and old comrade, he was listening a lot of people of the world clapping and smiling when Willy Tybur declared the war and extermination of Paradis. And in that moment Eren got a sad expression on his face, because he understood the entire world was their enemy so he was forced to become in a mass murdered and the devil of the world to save his people.
Tumblr media
People of this fandom no longer talk about all the innocent people who were eaten by the titans that Marley dumped on the island. They don't talk of the number of Eldians that nations elsewhere have locked up in concentration camps, who are tortured and humiliated every day, simply for being Eldians, just like Jews in WWII, as we saw in Zeke's and Grisha's flashbacks. People forget Erwin, Carla, Armin's granpa, thousands of innocent people who lived inside wall Maria, and hundreds of soldiers died without even know the real reason why.
People in this fandom don't talk enough about Armin was the one who told Eren "to defeat your enemies, you have to become a monster", that Levi was the one who told Eren that he will have to take difficult choices if he wanted to survive, and that other people might die but he should be prepared to deal with it. That it was Mikasa who fought without hesitation against Annie and urged Eren to fight vs their enemies, along with Armin, Jean and Connie. That Hange and Levi tortured, killed and manipulated other soldiers in season three to archieve their purposes, that Reiner admitted in front of Eren that he destroyed the wall not because they forced him, but because he wanted to be a hero, so his parents could be together and be proud of him.
Tumblr media
No. Because it's much easy only to throw shit at Eren because he's killing babies of background characters who were totally fine with the idea to exterminate the eldians of Paradise, and yes, that includes inocent eldian children, Historia's baby and all the kids she saved at the orphanage. But I guess people is not ready to talk about this.
People don't talk about the fact Armin, Jean, Connie and the rest of the cast admited in ch 133 that they are sinners too. That they forced Eren to do this, that despite they wanted to stop him, they couldn't give him a realistic and a good alternative solution. That the Alliance killed their own comrades and ignored Eren's depression for four years. Now they regret ir but it's too late.
Btw, Armin is my favourite character of snk, and I LOVE Jean with all my heart and I like the rest of the cast. But all these things are true. Eren is the one who is commiting a global genocide, but the rest of the cast are not heroes, they're guilty about this as well. So stop picture them as heroes and Eren as the only villain of the world. This story is much more complex than that.
If you can't deal with characters with complex moratily and cruel actions, perhaps you should go to read Fairy Tail, Bleach or Naruto, where things are solved because the perfect and heroic main character is a saint who can solves all the problems of the world with the power of friendship and/or is able to change the mind of everybody just using the "talk-no-jutsu". And I'm not saying this like a bad thing, Naruto is one of my faves mangas and I like B and FT too.
and about the ending, I see a lot of people expecting some kind of cliché and easy ending, like the typicals about heroes-vs-villains stories of most Marvel's movies and mainstream animes, despite of Isayama himself has said in lot of interviews he wanted to hurt his readers and he loves controversial stories of murderers and monsters.
I don't know how Isayama will finish this. I wish it could be a peaceafull ending where eldians and humans can solve all their problems, but snk was never so positive. If Alliance wins and kills Eren and Isayama still is able to do a realistic and logical ending, giving the world convincent reasons to forgive the eldians of Paradis after that, I will be satisficed. But if Eren wins and kill all the people of the world because that's really the only way to save eldians... I won't blame Isayama. I love bittersweet, different and controversial endings.
I don't want the Alliance to die, specially my babies Armin and Jean, I love them too much, but  whatever if is either Eren who wins or either the Alliance, I would like to see an ending where Eren's survives, because I think that would be very interesting, to see him dealing with the guilt of his crimes during the rest of his life, with some kind of PTSD and trying to keep moving foward with his life despite of that. That would be a million times more interesting than "just kill him because he's bad". No, he deserves to suffers the burden of his actions, same as Reiner did after he back to Marley. The scene when Reiner tried to suicided but didn't it because Falco and Gabi were his reasons to keep living made me felt a lot of emotions, I know a lot of people considered that scene like a meme now, but the emotional impact was amazing. So, if I could choose, I prefer to see a scene of Eren like that, instead ot just being murdered.

Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears Review
Spoilers under the cut (obviously)
WHAT I LIKED:
The costuming, as always, was fabulous. Especially loved Jack’s coat with the orange lining making a comeback
The opening scene was really fun and exciting!
References to the show--Phryne’s beret, the picture in Jack’s wallet, Dot’s monologue about all the things Phryne has saved her from
Aunt Prudence!!!
The Phrack banter--these two are just the best
Major props to Nathan Page for his performance in the car on the way to Phryne’s memorial
Phryne interrupting said memorial in the most extra fashion
Set dressing is, as usual, gorgeous
The London police being unusually competent
The professor secretly repatriating stolen artifacts to their countries of origin was a nice touch
Dot being pregnant with Hugh’s baby!!!
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE:
I hated how little screen time the supporting cast had--I get that scheduling issues were probably the deciding factor for this, but it just felt incomplete without their involvement. The fact that Phryne didn’t even ask about Dot really made me sad, considering the plot point about Dot’s fears over not being able to help her solve mysteries after marriage in the show. I believe there were ways to incorporate them into the storyline even without putting them onscreen: Phryne making a comment about Dot mending her laddered stocking or about sending a gift for the baby; Jack phoning Hugh to tell him to watch over his cases for a few weeks while he’s chasing Phryne around, maybe him telling Hugh on said phone call that Phryne isn’t dead and Hugh saying they knew but couldn’t reach him by telephone before the memorial, sending a letter to Mr. Butler asking for his expertise about British v Palestinian politics, something about Bert & Cec escorting Aunt Prudence to London for the whole debut party thing, or Mac being the point of contact for the Professor???? I wanted WAY more then a thirty second group cameo.  Phone calls, letters, or just throwaway commentary would have been such an easy way to include them if they really couldn’t have been there (although of course in a perfect world, everyone would have been there to help solve the mystery in person).
The “bad guy” was predictable. I picked out Cribbins as the guy’s real dad the second they mentioned the second son’s “beautiful mother”, so once people started dying I knew he was the culprit.
The quicksand thing was cheesy and I’m pretty sure inaccurate, regular quicksand requires some kind of moisture and with dry quicksand you typically only sink to your waist. I appreciate the attempt to give us a shirtless Nathan Page scene, but ehhhh
The storyline made absolutely no sense. I prefer my mysteries to be more based in human behavior rather than curses. Also why were they acting like the guy killed Shirin’s mom on accident when clearly he stabbed her on purpose?
How short that Phrack scene at the end was. We’ve see Phryne in so many sexy situations with other men during the show, and while this was absolutely sexy, it definitely was NOT. ENOUGH.
WHAT WAS IN THE EULOGY????
The pacing slowed way down after the strong beginning--I found myself getting bored easily. I feel like parts of the script could have been cut and/or the editing tightened up a bit to allow more time for more important things (like the ending Phrack scene).

do you have any tips on writing ace/aro characters, so that they come off as natural n not forced?
I'm gonna assume you're coming at this from a non-ace/aro perspective, so like, lemme give a super simple quick-and-dirty trick, and then I'll give you a couple of caveats to it. Also every time I say ace/aro in this post I mean "ace&aro OR ace OR aro." The example I'm using for this trick is more ace-oriented but like, apply the same mental exercise to romance. Here we go, here's the trick:
Pretend you're writing inside the mind of an adult character in a series aimed at little kids.
On the surface that sounds terrible I know, but bear with me while I explain it.
If you're watching, like, Sesame Street? There are adult characters running around. Various humans, Oscar the Grouch, Bert and Ernie, etc.
None of these characters think about fucking.
Like, ever.
I know, this concept is jarring, because Oscar is clearly a freak, and we all have headcanons about Bert and Ernie—but like, realistically speaking, they live inside a show aimed at preschoolers, and therefore they never think about fucking. They think about taxes, they think about repairing broken home appliances, they think about the state of the environment, they think about great works of art, but they don't think about fucking. You can examine the thoughts inside their heads at any time and fucking never crosses their minds.
Now, this doesn't mean they're childish/immature/naive. I specified "adult characters" for a reason. (Which is why, say, Elmo can't count for this example; the reason Elmo doesn't think about sex is because he's a baby.) Oscar is the wisest person on the planet. Bert and Ernie are out there living adult lives—and Ernie's a bit of a dork, but he's clearly an adult with some goofy thoughts, not an adult with the mind of a child. The human characters on the show are all normal humans, and the only trait they have in common is that they all get along with kids or else they wouldn't be on the show. You could write any of these characters into serious adult plots, just age up the vocab a bit, and they'd work just fine.
These adults are also all living in a real-ish world, and all have adult educations and knowledge bases. If you removed these characters from the setting of Sesame Street to ensure there are no preschoolers around and like, asked them if they know what sex is, they'd be like, yeah. Sure. Obviously. They wouldn't be naive. They are probably all reasonably knowledgeable about sex, to whatever extent we can expect out of muppets.
But none of them think about it. None of them care about it. They don't not know about it, they just don't think about it. If a guest singer comes on with a low-cut top, none of them will even notice that you can see almost all of her cleavage. If someone shows up who they personally consider extremely good looking by whatever their respective standards are, they will admire that person's looks but not once think about that person naked. On Valentine's Day they will think about handing out chocolates to their friends, and not think about the state of their sex lives. Due to the fact that they're not naive, if SOMEBODY ELSE goes "got a date for valentine's!! Hope we'll be up late. ;)" they might go "oh congrats, gonna see a late movie? ...... oh no wait, I figured out what you mean, haha good luck."
They aren't clueless. But the nature of the reality they live in precludes sex from naturally occurring to them or appealing to them.
You can do ace characters like that. You can also do aro characters like that—this specific example is focused on ace because like, even toddler shows will show romance in the form of A Mommy And A Daddy Who Are Married or whatever, and I couldn't think of an easy broadly-recognizable example for romance-free settings. But you can apply the same "knows about it, doesn't think about it, doesn't care about it" logic to aro characters.
The advantage of taking that approach is this: you never have to focus on I wonder what it's like to never think about sex/romance? because it is, at least in my opinion, VERY easy to imagine the aforementioned characters never thinking about sex/romance. You don't have to stop and try to figure out how they interact with the world, because they just DO interact with the world, never thinking about the things they don't feel the need to think about.
A lot of times I see ace/aro characters written as somehow preoccupied with their own absence of XYZ feelings, or else mentally explaining/justifying why they dislike XYZ activities as if their orientations are something they thoughtfully reasoned out rather than something innate/unconscious; and in both cases I think that's a reflection of allo writers being preoccupied with the absent feelings or trying to come up with an explanation that makes sense to THEM for why someone would "decide" to have this orientation the writers themselves don't have an internal instinctive understanding of.
But the same writers would probably have no problem writing Oscar without sexual thoughts because it probably never occurred to them to give Oscar sexual thoughts in the first place. It's not something they need to think about and justify. They can just do it.
Now, here are the caveats:
- Of course you don't want to LITERALLY write ace/aro characters like ACTUAL characters from shows aimed at preschoolers. You can AND SHOULD have them be gritty and intelligent and willing to go commit murders or whatever, and can AND SHOULD have them demonstrate all the depth and complexity of a character in a Victor Hugo novel. This example isn't given as a suggestion for a basis of characterization, but just as a thought exercise to help someone I'm presuming is allo get into the mindset of what it's like to have a character who simply never thinks about sex or romance. "How to have a character not be thinking about sex" is all you should take from this. Please don't write ace/aro characters like you're writing to a five-year-old audience.
- Of course, ace/aro folks are all different. Some of them think about sex or romance a lot. Some of them find romance fascinating to think and write about specifically because they don't have an internal sensation of it—hi there, yours truly. Some of them are demi or gray and do feel sexual or romantic attraction once in a blue moon. Some of them aren't merely neutral to the topics, but actively repulsed, uncomfortable, hostile, etc, whether that's because of just an instinctive Ew Yuck reaction or because they live in a society where the topics (and sometimes the activities) are forced on people all the time and they got sick of it. Some of them are actively sad/wistful that they don't experience those desires. Some are very pleased with how they are but still spend a lot of time comparing/contrasting their experience of the world with other people's. "Completely oblivious and completely disinterested and completely neutral" is a real possibility, but only one possibility out of many, and it would suck if that's the only sort of ace/aro rep we get.
But—BUT—if you're new at writing ace/aro characters, particularly if you're still figuring out the very basics of how to write about them in a way that sounds natural, I still recommend this thought experiment as a way to wrap your mind around the very basic root level experience of what it's like to have a character that doesn't feel attraction. Everything else can be piled on top of that foundation later.
Because if you hop straight on to something complicated like "smut scene with a character who's ace but sex positive and into doing kinky shit," what you might actually end up writing is "character with a token line included about how they don't desire sex but think it's fun and then they spend the rest of the scene having extremely allo-sounding thoughts/reactions," whereas if you've already had some experience/practice putting yourself into the head of a, like, basic tutorial level ace character, it's easier to extrapolate from that and do things like go "well, this character is into kinky sex, BUT I probably shouldn't have them get aroused at the thought of seeing their partner naked, since their source of fun is from the act itself and not from a physical attraction to that person..." or whatever.
- If you want an example of a character who is definitely ace but who also definitely has weird sex, it's Oscar the Grouch. I will not be accepting criticism. You know it's true.

RECENT NEWS, RESOURCES & STUDIES, December 2019
Welcome to my latest summary of recent news, resources & studies including search, analytics, content marketing, social media & ecommerce! This covers articles I came across since the October report, although some may be older than that.
I am also missing a lot here, but pared it down somewhat to make more readable. The lead up to the holiday shopping season was a lot crazier than I expected 🙃
Given the time of year, please do not expect another report until January. However, I will do brief posts of important news/blog posts in the interim as needed.
There are going to be big changes to this report coming in 2020. Have any suggestions or feedback?  Leave a comment below, email me through my website, or send me a message on Twitter.
TOP NEWS & ARTICLES
You are going to need to add Etsy’s tax ID to customs forms on New Zealand orders as of Dec. 1. Etsy’s ID is: 122-669-18.
FTC issues huge fines for selling fake likes & followers on social media, and for posting fake reviews online. “The [likes and followers] case could pave the way for further legal action on the same grounds, using the Devumi case as precedent. Indeed, shortly after the initial finding by the NY Attorney General, Facebook announced that it was moving ahead with legal action against several providers which it had found to be dealing in fake social media engagement.”
Everyone should read this article, if only to learn what not to do: Using “priming” to convert more buyers/users is a crucial marketing tactic.”Priming works by using associations made in our subconscious, and are almost always unnoticeable to the subject.” Example: “During a study, researchers approached customers in an electronics store, who’d entered to buy a new laptop.Half of the customers were asked what their memory needs were, and the other half were asked what their processor needs were...The group who were asked about memory, bought computers with higher memory and the group who were asked about processor speed, bought computers with much higher processor speeds.”
Etsy removed the word “Bugs” from the Bugs forum, & admits they will only will be monitoring it from 9-5 Etsy time (ET) Monday to Friday. They won’t be replying, but expect “hundreds of sellers” to do that job for them, unpaid. If you have an issue, you will now need to email through the Contact page, use the new 24 hour live chat, or phone them. [Note the parts they aren’t mentioning - Support is taking over a week to reply to emails right now, live chat will only be able to help with the simplest of questions (e.g., how do I change my email address?) & it is possible to spend over an hour on hold when you phone. You could spend quite a bit of money on long distance fees, especially if you are in a country that doesn’t have its own phone number, all for something you used to be able to get for free in the forum, sometimes on the same day. This is Etsy’s definition of “major improvements”.]
Check out this proposed US legislation, which wants large internet companies [yes, Etsy fits their definition] to reveal their algorithms & offer visitors a version with no “filter bubble.” You might not like Etsy search now, but I can guarantee it would become impossible if they removed all of the algorithm factors. [This editorial is a bit over the top, but does cover some of the key questions.]
ETSY NEWS
Items have been disappearing from a small number of Etsy searches since July, & Etsy still won’t tell us what is going on. If you discover you are affected, please let me know.
There have been a few threads on Etsy sending threatening emails about shops being below Etsy’s customer service expectations, often for just a few bad feedbacks or cases, which has shocked many long time sellers (even though they have been sending them for years; it appears they have decreased the number of “problems” you need to have to get an email.) Without announcing anything, Etsy released a page of “seller service level standards” that can help explain what they are looking for, namely cases & 1-2 star reviews, as well as the exact formula they use. I started a discussion thread here, & in case Etsy deletes comments in the thread, here is the dashboard showing your score. (Some people cannot make that link work; Etsy says only shops that received a warning can see it.) My blog post is here.
I summarized the 3rd quarter report here, and Etsy summarized it here. The stock market is not happy with management at the moment, with Morgan Stanley this past week stating that they expected Etsy’s 4th quarter to be worse than originally predicted, due to state sales tax laws and Etsy’s reduction in its Google Shopping ad buying. Note Etsy removed the “priority placement” for US free shipping about a week after the 3rd Q report, without any announcement, probably due to the blowback about it reducing first page conversions. (They didn’t announce anything; it just disappeared.)
Cyber Week traffic on Etsy was more than double what they saw on the average summer day.
They did a Q & A thread on the new stats, which wasn’t particularly useful. They admitted they intentionally removed the keyword & other data prior to November 2017 because “older data periods are less comparable to current stats”. [I believe that is code for “we’re too cheap to pay for the storage; investors need their payouts.”] They did finally add YOY comparisons back in a few weeks ago.
Etsy has again changed a few category & attribute options, including more baby stuff.
They did a holiday gift shopping promotion where people could call Etsy & get suggestions for gifts on Nov. 5. All gifts shipped free, so non-free shipping shops were not included. “It could also be a case study for personalization efforts to come from the long-running handmade marketplace.”
You’ve probably already noticed that Convos are now called Messages, but here is the announcement with the details just in case.
Etsy ran an Etsy search critique thread on November 13; the thread wasn't particularly useful, as almost all the staff who do the critiques aren’t experts in search. Basically, they say to use all of your tags, avoid repeating words in tags & titles, have 3-4 short phrases in your title, use commas in your titles (”Buyer research shows that using commas instead of dashes helps titles appear more clean and readable”), offer free shipping, and use all of your photos. The big takeaway for me was - they think we all have unlimited photography budgets, models, and time to do different modelled photos for every listing (including at the beach! LOL), photos of each of our different pieces in progress, photos of us working, & photos of each type of packaging. Needless to say, none of those things are bad if you have gobs of time or the money to pay someone to do all of that. But if you are like me and are a one-person business, live in a small condo, don’t have the strength to take photos all day, don’t have an abundance of people to model when I am taking photos (i.e., people I know have real jobs & aren’t around when I work on photos), and don’t have anyone to take photos of me making things, then this is pretty laughable. I wouldn't even consider doing all of this for my 5 best selling listings, never mind all 430+. YMMV. [The repeated mentions of process photos makes me worry they will be requiring those for everyone at some point …but I am sure I am just being paranoid.] One notable error was telling someone to use “color” (the US spelling) instead of “colour” (the proper English spelling) because the shop’s language settings were US English - Etsy currently treats these both the same, so there is no issue at the moment. Are they trying to give us a hint about something?
SEO: GOOGLE & OTHER SEARCH ENGINES
Introducing BERT: Google’s new technology to help organic search process natural language better. This isn’t likely a change you can optimize for, but it should help searchers get more relevant results for complicated queries. “Here is an example of Google showing a more relevant featured snippet for the query “Parking on a hill with no curb”. In the past, a query like this would confuse Google’s systems. Google said, “We placed too much importance on the word “curb” and ignored the word “no”, not understanding how critical that word was to appropriately responding to this query. So we’d return results for parking on a hill with a curb.” Moz’s Whiteborad Friday covered the basics. [warning - some bits are advanced. Just skip those if you need to.] A study said BERT still isn’t very good at understanding “not” and other negatives. The NY Times may be one of the sites that is affected.
If you were disappointed when keyword research tool Keywords Everywhere became a paid tool, a new alternative has been released. Note that Keyword Surfer is still in beta. I’m going to try it for a bit and write up a short report if I think it is worth using. (The traffic estimates are way off, as in almost 10 times too low, for the sites I have info on.)  If you try it, let me know what you think!
While we are on the topic, here’s 13 keyword research errors you don’t want to make. Short takeaways - not every high volume keyword phrase will work for your specific product, don't ignore long tail, and make sure you look at the search results for any keyword before you decide to use it.
Here’s another keyword and topic research tool that compiles questions people search along with a relationship tree so you can see how ideas are connected.
More common SEO problems with ecommerce sites.
If you code your own website, check out the new Google instructions on writing your organic search snippets. Note this is supposedly only about display & not about ranking.
Improve your Instagram traffic with 8 SEO tips for your profile and posts.
Which is better for SEO - Squarespace or WordPress? The results are likely skewed by the fact that “platforms like Wix and Squarespace tend to attract less SEO-savvy people than WordPress.” They agree with what I have been saying for a while: if you know what you're doing, Squarespace sites can rank just fine.
Excellent tips on how good SEO also helps you comply with US disability access laws.
The latest on Google updates - there was apparently one around November 7. This one may have hit affiliate websites more than other types.
The Wall Street Journal wrote an article claiming Google manipulated search results to favour its interests & those of its advertisers, including eBay. [The original article is behind a paywall; the link is in that news coverage.] However, many in the SEO community - most of whom are not usually reluctant to criticize Google when they are behaving poorly - feel the article is way off base, & demonstrates a fundamental lack of knowledge of how Google works. Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Land & Search Engine Roundtable even did interviews with t WSJ staff for the article, and was amazed at how much they got wrong. “Even a basic understanding of the difference between organic listings (the free search results) and the paid listings (the ads in the search results) eluded them…[Glenn] Gabe told us that not only were his conversations with the paper off-the-record but also that he was misquoted”
CONTENT MARKETING & SOCIAL MEDIA (includes blogging & emails)
Here’s something I don’t see discussed much: using templates (& other consistent branding) in your social media, blog and website posts.
Content hubs are a very useful way to increase your search engine traffic for a core topic while providing a landing page for social media, ads etc.
Good primer here for beginning social media marketing for your business. You’ll need to do more research depending on your target market and what platform/s you choose, but it is definitely a good overview of getting started.
If you think influencer marketing is right for your business, here are 10 places you can find influencers to work with.
Your email subject lines can change the open rates; here are 19 tips to make them more clickable.
Instagram started testing hiding “likes” on posts in the US as of November 11th, & then announced plans to try it out globally. A study on previous tests showed that there may be some effect on influencer engagement.
Facebook has introduced its own payment system, currently in the US only, for limited situations only at the moment.
Reddit is an often overlooked social media platform to use for business but the traffic is strong, so check out these tips on asking it work for your business. [infographic]
ONLINE ADVERTISING (SEARCH ENGINES, SOCIAL MEDIA, & OTHERS)
Pay for online ads (outside of Etsy) but don’t know what negative keywords are? Here’s how to use them with Google.
Hubspot continues their massive rush of “ultimate guides” with everything you wanted to know about Amazon ads.
Facebook now allows you to have different text in the same ads, which can be adjusted for different groups of users.
Amazon is predicted to continue cutting into Google’s online ad dominance through 2021; Google currently has 73% of money spent on online ads in the US.
If you are interested in long term brand building in your advertising, you might be interested in this article, where Adidas admits it was ignoring brand ads & pushing instant returns for too long.
Just in time for the holidays, Google Merchant Center rolled out a bunch of upgrades.
Buying TV ad time is losing popularity; it will be less than 25% of all advertising spend in just a few years, while digital spending is now over 50%.
STATS, DATA, OTHER TRACKING
Facebook changed how they count page impressions.
Everything you want to know about the Google Search Console. Oh, and also everything you want to know about the Google Search Console. Which one do you like best? [If you have your own website or freestanding blog and are not using the Console, you probably should be reading both of those. Seriously, just set the darn thing up, then learn how to use it later.]
Also, the Console now features a speed report, and has changed how they send you messages.
ECOMMERCE NEWS, IDEAS, TRENDS
Trend alert: many struggling or failed retailers sell clothing. “This sector is saturated with supply and is arguably over-stored.” … “For younger shoppers, as they choose which apparel brands do get their attention, sustainability and other cultural issues are often at the forefront.”
US sellers can now get discounted UPS rates through Shippo.
A bug is keeping suspended Amazon sellers from being reinstated.
BUSINESS & CONSUMER STUDIES, STATS & REPORTS; SOCIOLOGY & PSYCHOLOGY, CUSTOMER SERVICE
Don’t use these common customer service lines. ...“there are studies that support the use of positive language in customer service. Instead of focusing on what you can’t do for a customer, focus on what you can do. No one likes to be told no.”
Another article on the psychology of colour; beware that some of this is a bit simplistic, as there are always exceptions.
Holiday shopping will push further into December this year, with half starting around Cyber Monday (Dec. 2). 62% of “high spenders” (over $2100 spent on the holidays) will shop on their smart phones. 25% of respondents to this survey said they already started shopping in September. It turns out most people want gift cards, among other stats. Nearly half of US shoppers are more likely to shop with companies that are socially responsible. Mobile shopping is expected to beat desktop shopping for the first time this season. And yes, most Americans expect to add to their credit card debt before January, men more than women.
US retail sales fell 0.3% in September; online sales fell the same amount.
MISCELLANEOUS (including humour)
Trend alert - apparently Generation Z is not big on makeup, and it is affecting large companies’ profits.
Google’s co-founders hand the parent company Alphabet over to the current CEO. They still work for Google and will focus most of their time there.
Google Webmaster spokesperson John Mueller tackles the controversial question - is a hot dog a sandwich? [humour]

The Naming of Names
Characters are something like children. They have personalities. They can be stubborn, willful and inclined to go their own way. They don’t like to listen. They, also like children, have to be named.
I’ve always been fascinated with the meanings of names. In high school, one of the few things I bought outside of Star Wars expanded universe novels was a baby name book. I did get teased about whether or not there was something everyone else should know quite a bit. That book also made the rounds of my class at least once a month. I took highlighter to the different name origins. The pages are falling out and yellowing and I still have that book and use it.
Some writing advice people say to just name a character, the meaning or type of name doesn’t matter. Anyone who has read a Mary Sue story with an overly long, purple prose name would say differently. I disagree with this. Names are important. Your parent doesn’t just slap a name on you. My name has family meaning. It’s been in my family several generations. Naming a character who is important to your story and the story revolves around can carry the same weight. (While I don’t view my characters as my children/babies, I know some writers do. They’re more like my friends who live in my head with me.)
Naming a character can one of the easiest or one of the hardest aspects of character creation. It is one of the first steps of individuality. It gets them beyond just being male or female with a check mark of what type of character they’re supposed to be. They are no longer he or she, but they are “name.” And hopefully, as a writer, you really like that name, because you’re probably going to end up typing it a lot.
I like to say naming a character is somewhat instinctual. Usually, there is something about a name that draws to me as I’m looking through names and goes “that’s this person.” And sometimes, it truly is that easy and I don’t think about why I like that name until later. In fact, one name of my novels I was using as a placeholder, went to find another name and realized no other name fit as well as the placeholder did. Not to say there aren’t reasons for choosing names.
Sometimes, I choose a name simply because the name is pretty. I like the sound of it. Cultural context, what it means, or character background doesn’t matter, because the name is pretty and I like it. So there.
Other times, it is a lot easier to go by the meaning of the name. This is usually important if the name of the character is supposed to have some sort of significance in the story. The meaning of the name could give some clue into the personality of the character, a like or dislike. For instance, Mariel of Redwall is a young female mouse with warlike tendencies. One of the possible meanings of her name is ‘rebellious.’ Or, sometimes it is just easier to name a red head something that means “red haired.”
There is nothing wrong with using a name to fit in with a ‘culture.’ This could be using a name that is distinctly French, German, Arabic or Hebrew and so on. The hippies of the sixties created their own culture of words as names, such as Apple and Sunshine. Christians are part of a ‘church’ or ‘biblical’ culture. They are more often going to use bible names. There are certain names that are often associated with upper crust Southern families like Montrose or Cameron.
Or you can choose the name to contrast with the predominate culture of the book. This is a good way to show that the character might not ‘belong’ or ‘fit in.’ Or they had really odd parents who didn’t fit in. So, the character may love or hate their name depending on whether or not they want to be part of the culture in the book.
Sometimes, you have to consider the type of character you’re naming. If they are the everyday type of character that you want the reader to relate to, then you need to choose an everyday type of name. These are your Tom, Dick and Harry’s. Dave, Bill, Sal, Ted, Bert, Jack, John, Bob and Ed are also common ‘everyday’ type of names. These are the type of names that you’d run into in every walk of life and every income bracket. Some of these names do vary more by region. Jethro, Jeb and Cody might be more southern or ‘western’ names.
Or sometimes, if I’m really stumped for names. I take the name book I’ve had from high school, close my eyes, flip through it, stop and go through the alphabetical section I landed on. Sometimes this takes a few tries, but it almost always works.
However you end up naming your characters. As long as the name fits and feels right to you, that is what is the most important.

[ kaya scodelario, twenty-seven, cis female, she/her ] ━ hey, I just saw [ willow mendes ] walking down the streets of crownsville. they’ve lived in town for [ six months ], and you can catch them around town working as a [ tattoo artist ]. I hear they’re known to be [ courageous & kind hearted ] and [ secretive & self deprecating ]. if asked, they would say their aesthetic would be [ coffee stains, sea salty hair, intricate dotwork tattoos, restless hands, smudged eyeliner, lipstick on a plastic fork, paint ridden fingertips, whispered secrets, and beaming smiles ].
Tumblr media
in the wise words of our lord & saviour, kuzco... boom baby ! guess who’s back ! 6+ months later than planned ! me ! so, hi ! i’m m ! you may remember me from such roles as, believe it or not, this ol’ worm if you’ve been around a hot minute ( but with a different name ! there’s already a hazel so i switched it to her alt whoops ! ) and from helping v out on the main a few weeks ago ( mena massoud ? mena massoud ! ) if you’re new-er ! i was here Before from the Beginning for like... ages, and then a lot of personal shit cropped up and i had to Yeet but guess who’s back,,, back again,,, me !
so lowkey coming back was like,, an impulsive thing,, lmao. like, i’d planned to sort some shit out and then come back in a couple of weeks and then that did Not work out, but then i was tempted on and off for months, and then babysitting the main for v again made me so much more tempted and then v was the best influence and here i am ! i went back and forth with characters and faces and things, and was tempted by loads of the wc’s ( y’all are creative as shit ! there’s so much good stuff on there omg ! ) and idk me and v were talking about it and,, i couldn’t help it, so i brought ma girl back. revamped a little, and taking her back to her Roots and when i originally played her like ,,, two years ago or something #Wild like that, so have some bullet points about this absolute goblin !
trigger warnings: alcoholism, death.
( also quickly before i go into shit, i’m gonna be a little spotty for a few days but by like,, wednesday i should be Here, Queer, and ready to Partie. however, wills’ bio and stats and shit needs updating name wise and idk if after getting this up i’ll have time, so if you could just bare with me, that’d be greatly appreciated )
oh god okay this is gonna be a mess
but first off: girlie has stats !! tasty !!
she was born in crownsville to two young but loving parents, who hadn’t exactly planned for her but were willing to devote their lives to her once she arrived. for the first few years of her life, everything was perfect, and her parents got by no matter what challenges life threw at them, as at least they always had eachother and their little girl.
everything was hunky dory ( or, it was from willow’s child-pov ) until willow was eight, when her dad died unexpectedly. after that, her mother was never the same, and she struggled to raise wills alone. willow did her best to make their lives as decent as possible, but it wasn’t easy, and her mother certainly didn’t help that.
she stayed in crownsville until the age of eighteen. she eventually went off to new york after she had a pretty, uh, Eventful year ( it’s kind of A Lot and i don’t really wanna go into it too Deep here but i have a full bio for her if you want it ! all the trigger warnings are clearly labelled ) but first, after battling an increasingly severe drinking problem for a few years, at eighteen she went to atlanta to get sober and sort her life out a little. once she did, she took an apprenticeship opportunity in new york and headed out there to start Afresh ( maybe moving to an entirely different state while freshly sober wasn’t a good idea but listen...........that’s the way she rolls, baby )
she loved ny, and did all the Struggling Artist shite while trying to #FindHerself, and got herself a tiny matchbox of an apartment to Thrive in. she started over, grateful for the opportunity to have a second chance at life now her perspective had been shifted, and get the fuck on with her life.
so before she moved back in january, she hadn’t lived in crownsvillle since she was eighteen, and although she claims she came back ‘because of work’ that actually translates, in willow, to ‘because i missed it’
she got what she needed from new york after living there for five years, and another change was necessary. however, she didn’t want to keep running, and hopping from place to place and state to state every time something bad happened, as her parents were ‘free spirits’ and floated around to wherever the wind blew them until willow came into their lives, and she really doesn’t want to become either of them, so when her boss at her tattoo parlour in new york mentioned something about wanting to open another shop ( ‘maybe boston, or atlanta...’ ) willow, after just getting out of a Less Than Loving relationship, suggested a lil’ place just outside of atlanta that y’all may have heard of, and offered to keep an eye on the place. so she packed up her shit and moved back home, completely unrecognisable from the mess that left all those years ago, and she now lives in the apartment above the shop ! she hates it !! but she lives there nonetheless !! with her two beloved goldfish, ernie and bert !!
after her last relationship ( f i n a l l y ) came to an end, and a few years of confusion and inaccurate labels, she ( F I N A L L Y !! ) accepted that she’s a flaming lesbian and started identifying as such. after coming back to crownsville she might’ve been a little hesitant to reveal that information to anybody who knew her before, just because she felt like it might be a bit of a Shock considering the shit she used to get up to when she was last in town ( as a teen, she was dealing with enough already and wouldn’t even let herself think it; in her eyes, the last thing she needed was an identity crisis piled on top of everything else ) but now it’s been a little while it’s more well Known. new people in her life, though, are faaaar more likely to be in the know, it ain’t no secret. plus she can be a bit of a hoe so like.............. the fellow wlw in town also probably know lmao
her life has made her a little bit Messy as a person, but she’ll be a complete dumpster fire while giving you a smile and doing her dang best. she adores her job ( and is, if i may say, pretty dang good at it. she trained up & became a fully qualified tattoo artist, specialising in dotwork, while in new york ) and she’s also pretty dang good at the people side of her job, too & and she’s trying her best to be a good person. like,,, she’s done some shit she’s not proud of that make her think she’s a bad person, so she’s like Actively Trying to be a better person despite the fact that she’s lowkey got a heart of gold. her morals are just a lil askew, y’know ? she’s Trying
honestly i never know what to say in intros lmao, especially with wills since i’ve written so many for her, but if you want more info feel free to read other intros i’ve whipped up for her before: boop, boop, & boop.
so i can settle back into playin willy and being back, i’m gonna say willow’s been away for a couple of weeks and only recently Come Back within the last couple of days or something like that ??
also some shit about me to finish: honestly, i love small/medium gifs. i know, i’m awful. but for the Aesthetic and so things match i usually use gif icons ?? but tbh if you use bigger gifs, i’ll whack mine out happily. but i also love rp icons and have a bunch of ‘em that i love to use so you’ll see those Bad Boiz too. i also use small text but feel free to make it bigger when you reply if that’s the way the good lord made ya, i don’t mind in the slightest. i’m not the plottiest of people tbh ( or like,, pre-plotting ? ) so tbh u don’t have to message me to plot just bc u feel obliged to, but if you have ideas feel free to hmu ! i will, ofc, do the same ! and if a thread gets going and ideas spark, i’m all for that !!

Impression now: a lovely, brave young woman! 10/10 would hold her hand
Favorite moment: that time she just flew right into a burning building to save Fred. that was pretty awesome. also just... her in the second book.. just all parts with her in the second book.
Idea for a story: like a fanfic? maybe... all the young magicians gotta go off on a mission on their own, or something like that. or a story from when she was a valkyrie (in the Archipelago... before things went downhill). i really just want Laura Glue to go on a rescue mission or something. i want to see her save people.
Unpopular opinion: i don’t know if i have any, honestly. sorry!
Favorite relationship: her and Edmund... Cuties...
Favorite headcanon: of mine? well i don’t have A Lot but.. all I know is that this girl is Bi.
Fred!

Favorite moment: at the end of Here, There Be Dragons. when he gives people their shadows back. that was amazing.
Idea for a story: honestly, i think reading (or.. maybe writing if i was better) an Inklings meeting could be really fun? i’d want to read it. or: jack gets sick/really hurt and his friends have to take care of him. Or... Rescue Mission... these are like bare-bones ideas I’m Sorry.
Unpopular opinion: as much as i love and appreciate Jack, he isn’t my favorite. he’s very very VERY close!! please do not think that i don’t love and adore Jack, because i do! also i know Mr. James A. Owen wrote in one of the books that Jack was technically the main character but i still see John as the main character.
Favorite relationship: his relationship(s) with John, Charles, and Bert
Favorite headcanon: well, i draw him with curly blond hair, and he’s pretty short, so i guess that counts. also jack will wear anything. literally anything he finds he just throws on.
Rose Dyson!
First impression: cool character, seems like a cute kid, i like that she’s Hugo’s “niece”, but she doesn’t seem super interesting, i guess.
Impression now: i love Rose! she’s so brave and intelligent. but most of all just kind, just incredibly loving. she cares about her uncles and friends so much. she’s also become really funny, and cuter.

Favorite moment: i have a lot!!! one of them is when he’s talking with May Chang and he promises to protect her clan.. that scene was really sweet!! GOsh i love Ling Yao so much. 10/10 would smooch
Idea for a story: Boy i ain’t got no clue. sorry. ok maybe self-insert stuff but other than that... Also! consider: Greed Lives AU
Unpopular opinion: what are the popular opinions i don’t even know. maybe... maybe him and ed should have smooched idk. also i would have really liked to see Al and Ling interact more.

Hapo Reads Calgary History pt 2. 1896-1939
Some MORE biased Edmontonian notes from ME
- Johnny Mac’s policy was (white) anglo saxon protestants from the british isles as settlers in the west, while Clifford Sifton threw the doors wide open to “The Scum of Europe” (both groups of whom are my ancestors lol). This book completely fails to mention several times re: immigration, suffrage etc that it was whites only so... there’s that
- “Calgary has been said to be more American in style than, say, Edmonton” see I read everything regarding Edmonton as throwing shade in this book and yet, how is it shade to be called less American? please, Calgary. (also “than, say, Edmonton” as if you had to think of Other Points of Comparison Other than US, your Eternal Rivals for All Eternity)
- “business and burlesque” in response to edmonton becoming the capital B)
- the big stink aka chinooks dont mean you DONT HAVE TO WORK
- Its time for the Calgary Dominion Exhibition aka ‘is calgary world class yet’ (no). There was a wild west show, automobiles, and a dirigible (which like all dirigibles caught fire and exploded)
- “WHHHHHY DOES MEDICINE HAT GET TO HAVE ALL HELL FOR A BASEMENT AND NOT MEEEEEEE WAAAHH” aka a bunch of entrepreneurs scrambling all over themselves trying to be The First to get Calgary natural gas power
- “oh my god that one wild west show we booked was So good... what if we had a week long rodeo............... but just once thats enough”
- 1912 ALL THE COWBOYS AND COWGIRLS EVER ALL THE WAY FROM MEXICO AND THE STATES CONVERGE ON CALGARY AND HAVE A GOOD TIME but we don’t need to do that again we’re good
- “um... should natives compete against non natives :/” [Tom Three Persons from the Blood Reserve is the Only Canadian to win any of the events] “OKAY NEVER MIND
- modern cal looks back on the first stampede like ‘there were no time limits back then you just... watched the rodeo until they stopped bucking... how did we manage”
- THAT WAS SO FUN LETS HAVE ANOTHER- oh its WWI
- Hey what if we redesigned Calgary to look like VENICE ON THE PRAIRIES- oh wait its WWI
- OK NOW WE DEFINITELY WANT ANOTHER - HEy WHy IS WinnIPEG GetTING THE StAMPEdE ITS OuRS
- Finally the Exhibition is Back and Fred McCall and Wop May are doing crazy air stunts that they did as pilots in the war for our entertainmen- oh my god Fred’s going down he’s landed on the merry-go-round its..... everyones fine but the plane impaled on the merry-go-round looks like some kind of... Metaphor for wanting to forget The War
- Finally, the Exhibition and Stampede are UNITED AS ONE and nobody came because no one could afford the ticket prices.
- Nellie McClung and Bob Edwards FIGHT in the leg and then Bob Edwards dies unrelatedly
- we need to have MORE PARTIES... what about... A WINTER SPORTS FESTIVAL WE WILL... PUT A SKI JUMP ON TOP OF A ROOF... ON TOP OF A HILL. YES.
- this book keeps waxing poetic Every Chapter about “this event foreshadowed the 1988 WINTER OLYMPICS WOW AMAZING” and i realize this book was published less than a decade after said olympics but considering i live in a world where Calgary is STILL TRYING TO RECAPTURE THE 1988 OLYMPICS PRESTIGE even though the Olympics have been Proven EVIL and there is no financial benefit... it’s mostly just Sad
- seriously calgary you dont need the olympics when you have NAHEED NENSHI...
- Sunday Morning pasttimes in 1920s calgary: Listening to Back to the Bible Hour with William “Bible Bill” Aberhart on the radio, driving out with a picnic to Turner Valley to watch them light gas on fire
- 1920s calgary, arms full of bogus certificates and shares he bought off a vendor on the street due to the natural gas strike, “I’m an adult!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!1!”
- 1930s calgary, crying in the street surrounded by bogus shares and also The Depression “WHY ISNT LIFE FAIR TO ME”
- The climate was still better than Sask so crops kept growing which was nice but it was still bad enough that Cal decided to invent a little party of angry farmers and workers called the CCF... which you may have heard of as the NDP B)
- Ed: Finally something Good and Useful comes out of Calgary Cal: nah i give up on socialism what about... WE JUST PRINT OUR OWN MONEY AND STOP PAYING DEBTS.
- Bert: here is your allowance of funny money- I mean, uh, your Prosperity Certificate Cal: sweet can I give this to you to pay back taxes Bert: No Cal: can I use it in stores Bert: Yes Cal: SWEET HEY ED CAN I BUY- Ed: [polishing the counter of the HBC] [flips sign from open to closed and locks the door] Cal: ok i will go to the bank and take out a LOAN of REAL MONEY Cal: ... WHAT DO YOU MEAN I CANT TAKE MONEY OUT OF BANKS WHEN I DONT PAY OFF MY DEBTS????
- Cal: wait all that gas that was impossible to cap wAS ON TOP OF AN OIL RESERVE THAT WE SHOULD HAVE LEFT ALONE TO RECOVER PROPERLY
- Conclusion: Calgary continues to be a spoiled baby who doesn’t understand how money works

COULD VICTOLERO BE A GREAT COACH?
by Bert A. Ramirez / January 15, 2019
Tumblr media
I was talking to Monchito Mossesgeld, a good friend since our Ayala days, while meeting him on one of my visits at a part-time engagement in Makati, and the former Purefoods team manager, who oversaw the team before the franchise was sold by the Ayala Group (mistakenly I would say) to San Miguel Corporation in 2001, assessed with me current Magnolia coach Chito Victolero, who won his first title of any kind after the Hotshots closed out the Alaska Aces in six games last December 19 to capture the 2018 Governors’ Cup championship.
I told Monchito that I hoped Victolero would improve his craft further, trying to ferret out his view of the man who steered the franchise to the first title it has won since Tim Cone was suddenly pulled out of the team’s bench to steer the Giñebra Gin Kings, then on an eight-year title drought, before the 2015-16 season.  Mossesgeld, after all, was in a good position to offer his thoughts, having seen Chot Reyes and Eric Altamirano lead the then-Purefoods club to a championship in the very first conferences they coached, one of three Purefoods coaches to achieve that exclusive feat (the third, Ryan Gregorio, came after the franchise has been sold to the SMC Group).
Overall, Monchito and I were in agreement that Victolero was a good coach.  But just as i thought, Monchito also felt the Hotshots headman was not able to maximize the talent at his disposal.  Case in point: Aldrech Ramos and P.J. Simon.
This was carried in the remark that Monchito made: “Ano na ang nangyari kay Ramos?”  Ramos, with the exception of the Game 3 blowout where Alaska gave the Hotshots one of their worst beatings 100-71 in franchise history, never got off the bench in the Governors’ Cup finals, making many wonder what has happened to what was once one of the best stretch power forwards in the league who averaged 13.3 points and 5.7 rebounds for Kia before he was traded to Magnolia prior to the 2016-17 season.
Ramos’ rare usage was such that when he got those now-occasional calls, he seemed to have lost what used to be a sharp eye and was no longer effective from the offensive end, his primary value as a player. This demonstrates the deterioration that anybody would undergo if he wastes on the bench during actual games no matter if he regularly puts in those practices.  What is ironic is that Ramos played under Victolero when he had that career year with Kia, and though his relegation is supposed to have been an offshoot of Chito’s defense-first approach, it still doesn’t fully make sense to see the 6-foot-7 frontliner become a virtually forgotten man on the bench.
Also a source of puzzlement is the erratic use by Victolero of Simon, one of the most efficient scorers in franchise history and still perhaps the best creator among the Hotshots’ current players.  But P.J., despite those credentials and having shown enough spunk when given the chance even at 38, has also suffered the fate of Ramos, albeit to a lesser extent.  This continues to puzzle the team’s followers particularly when Magnolia finds it hard to generate offense and the shots from the team’s main weapons are not falling.
And what about Robbie Herndon, the rookie for whom the Hotshots traded three big-man prospects, Lervin Flores, Joseph Gabayni and Julian Sargent, to GlobalPort during the 2017 draft? Herndon, for all that package given up by the Hotshots, hardly got off the bench himself. Only when he got those occasional calls, particularly in the last playoffs, was he able to show flashes of his game – a good outside shot and offensive game plus passable defense – making observers wonder why he hasn’t gotten into the regular rotation of Victolero.  In Game 1 of the Governors’ Cup finals, for example, Herndon was a surprise starter and delivered a conference-high nine points, making all his three floor attempts, including two triples.
The truth is that there are people who think the 6-3 Herndon would have been farther along in his development and would have been a solid contributor in the mold of higher-ranked fellow rookies Jason Perkins, Jeron Teng, and, yes, Christian Standhardinger had he been given more opportunities by his coach.
One other area where Victolero can stand improvement is in in-game adjustments.  Mossesgeld didn’t get to touch on this aspect but it’s obvious that the current Hotshots mentor still gets flustered particularly when pitted against seasoned coaches like Tim Cone and Leo Austria or confronted with adverse situations where his team seems outplayed.  This was obvious in the games where Alaska blew out Magnolia as Victolero failed to stem the tide when the Aces got hot and applied fullcourt pressure defense against the Hotshots’ ballhandlers, something Victolero and his staff should have found an antidote for but seemed unable to solve.  And remember those Manila Clasico games against Giñebra, where the Hotshots lost seven straight games at one point with Victolero calling the shots in the last four?  Until the Hotshots finally broke Giñebra’s spell during the Governors’ Cup semifinals, Chito fell short every time he matched wits with the highly-esteemed Cone, who some consider the greatest coach in PBA history.
So this is one major trait that Victolero has to fully develop to get to the level of greatness.  Unless he is able to adjust on the fly in order to find the antidote or to neutralize the opposing squad’s ploys, he’ll never fully graduate into a great coach the way Cone, Baby Dalupan, Chot Reyes or Ryan Gregorio has in his lifetime.
Perhaps it’s unfair to expect the Magnolia tactician to blossom into that man quickly as some of his predecessors in the franchise did.  But the ability to make in-game adjustments is unmistakably one quality that will finally stamp greatness on his resume.
Chito already has that one quality that is a prerequisite to any coach who aspires to be successful – excellent interpersonal skills. From the time he took over the helm from an overmatched Jason Webb in 2016, he’s made it a point to cultivate a good interpersonal relationship with his players with his players-first approach.  And he has succeeded as he has obviously drawn positive response from the Hotshots.
“Ako, naging player ako, so alam ko kung ano ang gusto ng player, ano yung ayaw ng player,” the 43-year-old Victolero, who played with Sta. Lucia and FedEx for three years, said.  “Ang sa akin lang, give and take.  I think they know me ngayon and kilala ko na rin sila, so pinapakita lang namin sa isa’s-isa yung respeto.  Yun naman yung importante eh.  Ako naman, player’s coach ako eh, so titingnan ko muna ano ang makakabuti sa player, then after that, the Xs and Os will come.  If they’re properly motivated, they will play.”
“He’s not the dude (at) the top of the tower just watching down and giving rules.  He’s the one actually working as well,” former player Leo de Vera said. “Even in his work ethic, he’s usually the first here also out of all the coaches.  He’s jogging, he does work, too.  I’m pretty sure that’s not the only thing he does – he’s got his businesses, he’s got his own family to handle, so it’s really inspiring.”
Records-wise, Victolero’s first two years at the Hotshots helm is comparable to that of the last great coach of the franchise he has followed, and hopefully tail into greatness, too.  He has compiled a 36-21 overall record in the season that he just topped off with a championship.  The previous season that served as his first year on the hot seat, he had a not-too-shabby 32-20 mark that he punctuated with three semifinal appearances.
Cone, on the other hand, put together season records of 38-24, 38-26 and 41-30 in his first three campaigns with the franchise, and had a so-so 25-20 log during his last year that was uncharacteristically a struggle for a Cone-coached ballclub.
So numbers-wise, Victolero has got it made. But as everyone knows, it’s not the number of games alone that one wins which determines a coach’s niche; it’s more of the kind of games he does, and how many championships he ends up with in winning those games.
Victolero should do even better if he improves on the weaknesses we pointed out, and could very well end up as one of the Purefoods franchise’s, and the PBA’s coaching greats if he does.
