Hunting for Gems
episode 5 part 2
ash island x reader
prev |
When Ash Island is forced to participate as a producer for the latest season of Show Me the Money, he knows it won’t be easy. But when his partner is you, a rising producer from H1GHR, maybe it won’t be as bad as he thought.
--------------------------
Show Me the Money X Episode 5 - Producer Live Performances
The moment you've all been waiting for! Our producers have been rehearsing non-stop for their live performances.
This is their last chance to appeal to the contestants before team selections begin. Since our producers are usually the ones doing the judging, tonight they will be the judged! Before leaving tonight, all audience members will rank the producers from best to worst performance. Higher ranking producer teams will receive a special advantage in the next round!
What are your expectations coming into this round?
Saf: Honestly, they're not high. I'm not too well-known as a producer yet, so I'm not sure we'll be getting many votes. The other producers are legends, household names. I'd probably vote for them, too. But we're not too worried about our placement.
Ash Island: If our team is good, they should be able to win with or without any advantages. What matters is we're performing and putting out music that we like.
Saf: Yeah, we're really excited for everyone to see what we've been working on.
-----
As you and Ash take your spots on the darkened stage, you take a deep breath. This is your first time singing for such a large crowd. And it's going to air on national television. No big deal.
You close your eyes and calm your shaky hands. This is what you've been working toward for weeks. It's just you and these songs you know inside and out.
You open your eyes, and the music starts playing.
-----
Changmo, Hash Swan, and Leellamarz all sit in slack-jawed silence as the final notes play.
"I know," Ash says with a smug smile. "She's good right?"
"This was her first time singing?" Leella asks in bewilderment.
"Yeah, you would not believe how hard I had to work to convince her to do this," Ash tells him.
"And you've been hiding her from me this whole time?" Changmo exclaims. "She would've been perfect for my last single!"
Ash frowns, not liking the thought of your first song being with Changmo instead him. "She would've-"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa," Hash Swan interrupts, leaning toward the screen. "What is that?"
-----
Still on the adrenaline rush from performing, you stretch your arms out to Ash for a hug as the crowd continues to cheer all around you.
Wrapping his arms around you, he leans his head in to whisper in your ear, struggling to be heard over the crowd.
When you throw your head back in laughter, you notice his arms tighten around you, not letting you get away from him just yet.
-----
"You ever see him smile like that before?"
"Nope."
"Definitely not when he hugs me during a concert, that's for sure."
Ash just stares at them doubtfully as they talk about him like he's not even there. Until your laughter on screen catches his attention.
"Oh, yeah. He's got it bad."
-----
What did you say to Saf at the end of the performance?
Ash Island: I told her she did a great job, of course.
Saf: He also said maybe one day I'll be as good as him. Please, which one of us was getting all nervous when they put their arm around me during that last chorus?
-----
Thank you to all the producer teams for putting together such phenomenal performances! The results are in, and we will now reveal how the audience ranked our teams.
Ash Island: We don't really care about how we ranked against the other teams. We're satisfied with our own performance, and that's enough for me.
Saf: He says that but then secretly hopes to win. He'll go home and pout about it later.
"In fourth place, ranked last by our audience with a total of 52 points, we have..."
You close your eyes, bracing yourself to hear your team called.
Your eyes go wide as another team is called, and you look to Ash with surprise.
He scoffs, "Please, have some self-respect. You did way too good for us to rank fourth."
Your heart warms at his words. His face is all confidence as he reassures you.
The MC starts up again. "And in third, gathering 127 points, we have..."
You're not even nervous this time, since you're almost certain your name will be called.
And your jaw drops when it isn't. "We're in the top two?" you ask Ash in shock. You honestly can't believe it. You grasp his hand in yours as you wait for the next announcement.
"We will now reveal the second place team. Receiving 239 points, we have..."
You close your eyes and give Ash's hand a squeeze.
Contestant 1: It was almost unfair, letting Saf sing. I don't think anyone was expecting it.
Contestant 2: Ash Island was too good. His performance, his gestures, diction, flow just exude hip hop.
Contestant 3: That was a new song they performed wasn't it? I really liked it. I think the appeal of their team would be being able to make music like that with them.
-----
You allow yourself another leap of joy as you and Ash exit the Mnet building for the day. "I can't believe we won!"
"We didn't win," Ash reminds you. "We got second."
"We were in the top 2! That's a win to me," you defend.
Ash lets out a sigh but can't stop the smile from creeping into his expression. "Okay, you're right. Let's go eat to celebrate. On me," he offers.
Your eyebrows raise, "Right now?" Filming had run pretty long so it was already late at night.
"Yes, we've been on set all day. I'm starving. And you only performed to appease my begging, so it's my treat."
It had been a long day, and you should eat before heading home. "Alright, let's go," you agree.
Ash has a big grin on his face as he puts his arm around you and leads the way.

Rough.
Tumblr media
Liking someone can be rough. Especially when you don’t know where you stand with them.
As a successful idol, you know that dating is off the table. You, when you signed that contract, made a deal with yourself that you wouldn’t date anyone until you were a household name and as hard as that was, you did it. It took years of practise and grafting but you’re here almost a decade later as one of the most successful solo artists. And of course, with fame, comes loneliness. You’re twenty-five – never gone on a real date, haven’t kissed a man in so long and been pretty much devoid of all male attention. You were okay with this when you were busy promoting, busy selling out arenas, busy on tv-shows. But now . . . now, you’re not okay with the emptiness in your apartment.
All your friends were happy in relationships, married or with kids. And you with your dozens and dozens of awards. It’s not quite the same. You’ve never quite had enough time to like anyone, to go on dates, to even have sex. Quite frankly, you’re very much devoid of all male attention.
And then you get the opportunity to work with your favourite rapper.
“How did that sound?” You stare at Deokkwang through the glass, speaking into the microphone. “I think I could’ve pronounced the last few words better, you know?” You’re nervous. You’ve worked with rappers before like Simon Dominic, Jay Park, Loco – even Drunken Tiger JK. But you’ve never worked with someone like Deokkwang who you happen to have the biggest crush on.
It was your manager that set this all up – you knew you were collaborating with someone but when you walked into the studio months and months ago, you didn’t think it would’ve been Deokkwang.
“You sounded great, y/n.” Deokkwang says back and you feel yourself smiling at the praise. You can’t but think about how this process has gone so quickly – it felt like only yesterday you greeted him at the studio. Now, almost two months later, the song was ready to be mixed down and reviewed by the big bosses. You wouldn’t say you both were friends, but you can’t deny the fond feelings you have for him. “I don’t think we’ve could’ve done better if we even tried.”
You come out of the booth, a bittersweet feeling flowing through you. You sit across from Deokkwang and he listens to the entire mix with you. It sounds good – you’re a pop idol while Deokkwang is a fast-paced rapper and it’s a good mix. You can feel yourself bopping along and in the corner of your eye, Deokkwang looks at you before looking away. You’re not shy but around him, you curl into yourself.
“I really like this.” You say, excitedly once the song ends, turning to Deokkwang. “I can’t wait to release it.” You reach for the water that sits between you and so does Deokkwang. Your fingers brush together and you find yourself getting embarrassed. You quickly retract your hand and let out a small laugh.
“It sounds really good – your voice is really nice. We’re a good mix together.” Deokkwang lets out a laugh as well. You didn’t want this to end. Would it be too forward to tell him you wanted to maybe see him again? “We should do this again.” And your eyes meet. Properly. You liked people before, from afar, never up close like this. Deokkwang is exactly how you’d imagine him – funny, bashful, full of never ending conversation. But then, he can be shy. Soft and sweet. It feels like the moment, you know, the moment when you realise that you want to see this person again and again.
“Deokkwang,” You should tell him. Months of awkward moment when you’d catch his eye when he’d think you’re not looking. You feel yourself moving forward on the chair and you can see Deokkwang doing the same. Was this it? was this the moment you’ve been waiting for? You’re both pulled out by the sound of your phone ringing with your managers number plastered across. He’s probably waiting downstairs for you. Leaning back with a cough, you grab your phone declining the call.
“You don’t want to keep your manager waiting, right?” Deokkwang turns away from you, cheeks red. “Should I walk you out?”
“No, stay.” You insist. You don’t think you can stand in an elevator with Deokkwang without doing something like trying to kiss him. Instead you pack up and it’s quiet. “I guess this is it.” You say instead, grabbing your bag from the floor. You awkwardly linger around the chair, biting your lip. You didn’t want this to be over so quickly. “Hopefully we work together again, Deokkwang . . . you’re really great and I’d like to, uh, do this again. With you.” You shyly say. You don’t know what you expect.
“Yeah, totally.” But certainly not that half-hearted response. “Next time.” Definitely not the how he extends his hand for a firm handshake. You look at his hand and back at him. Really? A handshake? You’ve written a song about love and first meetings and this is how it ends? Irony at its finest.
You try not to look incredibly disappointed, but it shows. You take his hand, shake it and leave with that horrible deflating feeling inside of your body.
You leave the building, feeling colder than Seoul as you hop into the car. You don’t even acknowledge your manager properly. You keep quiet during the ride back to your apartment. You don’t know what you expected, maybe to be friends. Maybe to even go out for coffee or dinner. Just not a handshake.
‘song go ok?’ your best friend texts you. You groan, turning the screen off on your phone. Your manager gives you a sympathetic look through the mirror.
By the time you get home and get undressed, you’re still reeling about todays events. You shuffle around your bedroom, staring at your phone. Maybe you should text him? You might as well. You’re deliberating it enough. Before you can touch any buttons on your phone, your doorbell goes off and you frown. Who was coming to your apartment this late? It goes off again and you groan.
Shuffling towards the door, you look through the screen to see Deokkwang standing outside. Your heart lurches and you can feel yourself sweating.
“Deokkwang?” You say through the intercom. He looks up to the camera with a lopsided smile and you hold yourself back from cooing.
“Hey.” You can hear how nervous he is. “Sorry it’s late y/n but, uh, could we talk?”
“Yes!” You say too quickly. You press the buzzer and immediately through yourself to your room, grabbing your dressing gown and looking at yourself in the mirror. Not too bad. You hear the door click open, spray yourself down before almost slipping onto the floor to look as causal as possible. You stand against the wall, hearing the door unlock and you feel your stomach fill with butterflies. Deokkwang walks in nervously with a bag and you smile.
“Deokkwang, this is such a surprise.” You try and keep the excitement out of your body. “If I knew you were coming I would’ve . . .” you trailed off to your pyjamas. You can’t help but giggle.
“You left your jacket earlier.” Your smile drops at Deokkwangs voice. Right. Why would he be here for any other reason? All you did was work on a song together, barely even became friends. “I just wanted to drop it over.”
“Oh.” You say, sighing, curling into yourself. “You could’ve just told my manager, he would’ve collected it tomorrow.” You try not to sound disappointed. He places the bag by your feet. “Thank you.” You say. You can’t even fake a smile. Deokkwang nods, an awkward smile placing itself on his face. you both stand there for a minute before Deokkwang looks around, hands tapping against his side.
“Nice place, by the way.” He compliments.
“Thanks.” You can’t stop from feeling bitter. You can’t fake happiness now. You’ve never felt more rejected than you have right now. You’ve never wanted someone to like you so much than you have in this moment. “It’s late and I’m tired.” You state, annoyed. Deokkwang agrees with a silent nod.
“Well,” Deokkwang points to the hallway. “I’ll let myself out.” You don’t say anything but nod and watch how he leaves quietly.
You weren’t one to pretend that you don’t have feelings for someone. You’re not one to stand around idly. If you want something, you’ll get it, no matter what. Your feet carry you to the door, catching Deokkwangs’ wrist as he opens the handle.
“Wait.” You say, slightly breathless. “Did you really come here to just drop off my jacket? There was no other reason? You just wanted to be nice? Not anything else?” Deokkwang swallows, shrugging.
“I just – yeah. I wanted to be nice.” You let go of his wrist. “Is that a problem?” He sounds confused.
“Yes.” You say, suddenly feeling angry. You can’t stop the narrowing of your eyebrows as you hold his wrist. “It is a problem actually.”
“Oh?” Deokkwang blinks at you. You retract your hand, folding your arms together. “I thought . . . it’s cold and it’s a nice jacket.” He explains and it’s stupid. Stupid and cute and you hate how Deokkwang looks like he just got a cold bucket of water poured down himself. “It’s winter, y/n.”
“Don’t come here again.” You say, upset. “I don’t want to see you, Deokkwang. Once promotions are over, we shouldn’t see each other again.” You watch his face to see his expression. Deokkwang stares at you blankly, eyes unblinking. You sigh. “I like you.” You say, with as much confidence as possible. You find yourself suddenly not able to meet his eyes. “I like you a lot, Deokkwang. And I just – it makes me just –,” you shake your head.
“You like me?” Deokkwang says before gesturing to himself. “Me?”
“I said I wanted to see you again!” You exclaim, throwing your hands up. “Our hands always touched, and I would get so embarrassed and – and the first time I met, I told you that you happen to be my favourite rapper.” You don’t even want to think about the first time you met and how you were buzzing with excitement about seeing Deokkwang in person. “I told you I wanted to do this again with you and all you said was ‘yeah okay.’”
“Y/n . . . “ Deokkwang trails off, blinking.
“I get it. I’m not your type or whatever.” You mumble.
“No,” Deokkwang says, shaking his head. “I just . . . you think I’m attractive? Y/L/N Y/N? The nations daughter? You think that I’m . . . your type?” You blink. What? “I thought that – god, I thought I was making it up. You’re so nice and I thought you were just being nice.”
“I was being nice.” You counter back. “But I . . .  I wanted to be extra nice to you.” Deokkwang lets out a loud laugh before looking at you with a smile.
“I came here because I wanted to ask you out, y/n. But I didn’t know how, and I thought bringing your jacket would be a good idea but as soon as I saw you – god, I couldn’t do it.” You heart skips a beat. Deokkwang wanted to ask you out? “But I guess you’ve beat me too it, huh?” This . . . this was unexpected. Deokkwang having the same feelings for you? Deokkwang having the same feelings for you this whole time? Deokkwang thinking he wasn’t good enough for you?
“I like you, Deokkwang.” You admit, sheepishly. “I think you’re great.”
“I think you’re great.” He says back, an embarrassed smile on his face.
“And I think that you’re the most attractive guy I’ve ever seen.” You say. His face goes red. “And I want to get to know you more . . . if that’s okay?” You tack on at the end and he nods rapidly.
“If that’s the case,” Deokkwang draws out, hand reaching out to take yours, which you gladly accept and let your fingers tangle with his. “Y/n, can I take you out for coffee tomorrow?”
“I’d love that.”

Moderato
Bakugou x fem!reader
Tumblr media
Loosely inspired by Moderato by Wheein and Hash Swan. Enjoy :)
. . .
You let out a tired puff of air, tucking loosing strands of air behind your ears as you sorted all your unneeded textbooks into your locker.
Music blasted in your ears, and you nodded your head to the addicting beat. Just as you closed the door, a figure, who's greetings had gone unheard, bumped into your side.
You turned to face the adorably grumpy expression of your childhood best friend. You noticed with a cheeky grin how he frowned at your earbuds.
"Hey Katsuki." You smiled, plucking out a side to hear him better.
"What's taking you so long?"
You gestured at your locker, before raising an eyebrow at him. "Why do you never just wait at the entrance like we agreed?"
"Cause you are too damn slow." He growled, starting to walk away. You rolled your eyes, speedwalking to catch up.
"Maybe you just can't wait to see me~" You teased, laughing at the way his scowl deepened.
"In your dreams." He huffed.
"Yeah, yeah." You giggled, rolling the earbud in your fingers for a moment before reaching up and sticking it into his ear. Even if he would never admit it, you knew he enjoyed your music.
His scowl lessened until his lips were merely a thin line. He let out a quiet sigh, shoving one hand deep into his pants pocket. With his other arm, he reached around your shoulders and tugged you towards him so that the two of you could walk closer side by side.
"The wires are gonna get tangled." You worried, pulling at the headphones that were already snagging on his buttons.
"Whatever." He grumbled, squeezing your shoulder. You couldn't help but smile at him.
. . .
The two of you were deep into homework, or at least Katsuki was. The thoughts occupying your mind demanded your attention and everytime you glanced at Katsuki they only came back stronger.
"Katsuki, should I find a boyfriend?"
"Hm?" He glanced up at you, an eyebrow raised in skepticism. "Why? Do you want one?"
"No, I just... urg nevermind."
You looked down in an attempt to concentrate on the work in front of you, but when you looked back up moments later he was still frowning at you.
You turned a bit pink, suddenly embarrassed for even asking. Scrunching up your nose and hiding your eyes with your hands, you grumbled at him to stop staring.
"Why're you asking me anyways?" He pressed.
"Okay okay fine I'll explain, it's just kinda embarrassing..." you said, uncovering your face and feeling the burn on your cheeks.
"I wanna try dating sometime in highschool and I guess... well I guess I wanted your opinion."
He grunted but said nothing. Upon hearing his silence you continued on.
"And like, no one's ever asked me out..." you said shyly, looking down to avoid eye contact.
"And some people like Yaomomo seem to get asked out every other day..." you bit your lip, trying to push down jealous feelings. "But that doesn't happen to me..."
"So maybe," you could already feel yourself starting to ramble, "maybe I should be the one asking people out instead if I want to date?"
Katsuki raised his eyebrows at you, a tiny smirk on his face. He knew for a fact that it wasn't your fault that no one ever flirted with you. It was quite cute how dense you were sometimes. Could he help wanting to scare off any boys that tried to approach you? You already had him after all, who would you need anyone else?
"I don't think you need to date." He said, adjusting some papers on his desk. "Any random dude you pick is nothing more than some stupid extra anyways."
"What- I thought you would support me here!" You pouted, grumpy that you aired out all your woes only for him to shut you down.
"But what if I wa-"
You suddenly stopped talking, and Katsuki looked up to see you wide eyed, mouth open in comical realization. All you needed was a lightbulb above your head.
"Oh my god... it's because of you!"
Hm. Maybe you weren't as dense as he thought.
"I'm always with you and you probably scare everyone off! And everyone probably thinks we're dating!"
You couldn't believe that in the many years that you've known him, how the thought only occurred to you now. You caught the growing smirk on his face, which only riled you up more.
"Katsuki!! Stop smirking darn it! This is a serious issue!" You whined, throwing an eraser in his general direction, which he swatted out of the air. His smirk had turned into a full on evil grin. "How will I ever find a boyfriend with you around?"
"Hmph. As if it's me. I think it's just that no one is interested in you."
"Oh m- do you want to die?!" You yelled, cheeks flushed, before launching yourself at him.
. . .
Some time later, you found yourself in his room, thinking back on the conversation.
"Hey Katsuki, do you want a girlfriend?" You asked curiously.
"Why're we still talking 'bout this?"
"Cause I wanna know!" You laughed.
"No."
"Huh?"
"No I don't want one."
"Oh." You tilted a head to the side in confusion. "That was fast. Why don't you? You're pretty popular so it's not like you'll get rejected."
He ignored your question and continued scrolling on his phone. You got off from his desk chair and sat down next to him, peeking at the random heros and faces in his feed.
"So... you're gonna tell me?"
"Shut up."
"Tell me whyyyyy." You pouted, shaking his shoulder. He didn't even look up.
"You're being annoying." He grumbled. You started to shake his wrist too, and at that point he couldn't read his phone anymore. Well it wasn't like he was paying attention to it to begin with.
"C'mon I told you all my reasons... so you too. Please?" You begged, engaging you best puppy dog eyes. It always worked. You knew it, and when Katsuki saw your adorable face, he knew it too.
"Fine. Get off me." He grumbled, pushing you away. He cursed at how cute you look when you sat back with a bounce and looked at him expectantly. "It's cause I already have one little brat following me around all the time. I don't need another one."
It took you a moment to catch on, and you didn't know whether to be touched or offended. But you assumed that it was just Katsuki being Katsuki and that his intent wasn't to hurt you.
"I... do you mean that... do you think of me as..." you were starting to turn red, and a blush was creeping onto Katsuki's face as well. He didn't mean it that way, but then again that was how he felt so maybe he did mean it that way.
"Shut up. Whatever." He stuttered out, and you felt him starting to close up.
"Wait wait no Katsuki let's talk about this!"
"What's there to talk about?" He grumbled, ears turning pink.
"I... I don't know. You like me, d-don't you?" You questioned softly.
He froze, suddenly unsure what to say. Sure, he had thought of this moment before, thought of every smooth and flirty reply, but every suave answer he could have said completely evaded him.
"Cause friends aren't as... touchy as we are... and friends don't avoid dating for each other... right?" His uncharacteristic quietness made you nervous but you kept talking.
"And this whole time I've been wanting a boyfriend but you're always here so we're pretty much... um..." you couldn't bring yourself to say the words.
He pressed his lips together seriously. "What do you want me to do, confess to you?"
You flushed with embarrassment and stuttered something unintelligible.
"No! Well- yes? I don't know Katsuki this is weird okay!?" You covered your eyes, feeling your skin burn under your palms.
"I like you, Katsuki. I think you like me too... in that way... but I don't want things to get awkward..." you sighed. "Do you think we should just stay friends?"
You the bed dip underneath you as he shifted closer. The pads of his thumbs brushed against your knuckles before settling on your forearms.
"Well if we like each other what's the point in staying friends." He grumbled. You let out a sigh.
"If I kiss you, right now, you have to promise nothing will change. Okay?" He said lowly, gentler than normal now that you were so close. A kiss?? You had asked the question innocently and somehow, so quickly, things had taken a romantic turn. He tugged at your arm to pull your hands away from your face.
"I p-promise." You tried not to stutter but he was just so close.
And with that, he closed his eyes, leaning in and pressing a warm peck onto your lips.
After a second, the two of you parted. You stared at him in awe. You never really noticed how handsome he was before. When you see someone everyday you become so used to them...
"S-stop staring you brat." He muttered angrily, pulling you tighter into his chest so that you wouldn't have to see how soft you made him.
"It's a little strange..." you admitted, voice muffled by his shirt. "But I'm happy that you're my first..."
"I'd better be your last too."
You peeked up at him.
"What?"
His nose scrunched up as his heart welled with affection. It felt so right to hold you here in his arms, as a lover, not merely as a friend. He leaned in and captured your lips into another kiss.

808s & heartbreak | chapter one

It was an honest mistake.
That’s what they said anyway. But it wasn't really that honest.
After you had submitted all of your materials, you found the detail that probably should have stopped you from submitting. ‘Male. Born 1998 and after.’ Some could claim that you saw it, didn’t care, and submitted anyways. But you submitted under the songwriting category and your singing of the song wasn’t a red flag at all. Could have been your sister, a friend, anyone.
But it was you.
And when you showed up to your second round audition with nothing but a microphone, your looper, and a cascade of messy hair under a beanie--your best one you would say, you weren’t an animal--you were looked at in confusion. Everyone was too shocked to say anything as you quickly got into your song, clearly intrigued with your set up. Laying down a few quick vocal beats and harmonies over one another, you launched into the lyrics. Music was usually the one thing that didn’t provoke a stream of anxiety and apprehension.
It wasn’t hard for you to get taken away by your own music. It was only a verse and a hook but you made it feel like it lasted forever. At least, it had felt like that long to you.
‘Magical mystery nights, fairy lights. You looked at me like I was one of the sights. I always think of your soju-breath that night, And how you said our love was worth the fight.’
It was easy to pour the emotion into the song as you sang, even though you’d rather die than consider yourself a performer. Singing one of your more intimate, personal original songs was always a risk but hopefully it was one that would pay off. The moment made you think of a quote your sister would often recite to you, one by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich.
“Well-behaved women rarely make history.”
You always took that quote to mean in a male dominated industry, playing it safe would never get you noticed. This moment in time could either change your life or set you back a few steps. When you finished, you used your toe to turn down the sound and turn off the looper. You couldn’t hear anything but your own breath among the silence. You were sure they would dismiss you because you were a girl and not a boy. It was a blessing and a curse that your parents gave you a unisex name.
An older man with glasses sat at the table next to a younger woman probably in her late thirties. They looked at you in silence while glancing down at the papers in front of them.
“Y/L/N Y/F/N,” the man says with a chuckle, peering over his glasses at page, presumably with your submitted information on it.
He said something into the woman next to him’s ear and she nodded before taking a few notes in her own notebook. You couldn’t hear what they said but you know what was coming. You held the microphone that connected to your looper tightly in your hand.
You took the risk...but it wasn’t paying off.
“I take it that it was you singing on your first audition tape, then?” he asked. You looked for a sign that didn’t lead to disappointment but you couldn’t read his face. You knew exactly what he was digging for.
“Yes, it was,” you said simply and honestly. You could feel yourself pressing the balls of your feet into the wooden floor below you. Another rejection under your belt, you could feel it coming. You’d auditioned for one or two other small companies, ones that were geared more towards hip hop but they went in other directions. BigHit was the only other company you really wanted to work with. You could feel your eyes prickle at the nervous anticipation buzzing through you right now
“You know the audition notice said we were looking for males, right?” he asked, the woman next to him interlocking her fingers in front of her on the table. Your hand started to sweat around the microphone while your your free hand reached up to untangle a knot at the ends of your long hair.
“I did...after it was too late,” you said, laughing at yourself, trying to smooth over the situation, “I’m obviously not very good at reading directions.” It was true. The moment you pressed send, you then realized they were only looking for males. They were obviously looking for more guys for whatever group they were trying to put together. You’d heard they were holding additional auditions just in case, even though they already had a lineup they were working with. You were in fact not male and you were born in 1996, two years old than what they were looking for. You couldn’t stand the silence from both of them, so you continued against your mind’s better judgment. “I didn’t expect to even hear back,” you said, “So when I did...I thought, why not?”
“Hmmm,” was all the man said. It was the woman’s turn to whisper something to the older man. He sighed and shuffled all his papers together.
“Despite the minor deceit, it’s obviously that you are talented. We’d love to have you meet with some of our producers and if that goes well, possibly the talent we think you’d be a great fit working with,” he said. You didn’t know if you heard had correctly but when the woman smiled at you, your stomached settled slightly and you couldn’t help but smile.
“Thank you. Thank you so much!” you say, bowing to both the man and woman.
“We will email you to set up a meeting with part of our producer team. It was really refreshing to see a talented young woman such as yourself come in,” the woman said, speaking for the first time. You couldn’t help but smile back at her. There was something in the woman’s eye that you could grasp. Pride? A common acknowledgment between women in the music industry?
You hoped it was all the above.
Tumblr media
Your meeting with the producing team happened two weeks later. It was at 4pm on a Tuesday and you had loaded up as USB drive, your iPad, your laptop with everything you could think of bringing. You overprepared, putting all of your devices into your bulky, plain backpack. You had the ugly thing since high school and couldn’t bear to part with it. It probably had a few cough drops at the bottom from your last year of high school, maybe a granola bar hidden one of the million of pockets. But that was fine because you had everything you needed. Hopefully you’d be able to provide that to the people you’d be meeting with.
Before leaving your apartment, you looked in the mirror. You wore a royal blue sweatshirt, dark black jeans, some sleek boots with cutouts on the side. With your signature beanie--the one you wore to your audition--you knew that this was as good as you were going to get. You weren’t very girly and sometimes, you felt self-conscious about it. But you felt at your most comfortable and at ease when you were in jeans and a crew neck sweatshirt. You felt cozy and you could feel your anxiety quickly slipping away. But you hated to admit that you didn’t even own a dress. You thought to yourself, though, because wasn’t like you were going to wear one or a suit of any kind to this meeting. You were meeting with music producers, for God’s sake. You still wanted to impress, though. This could be your chance to work with one of the most buzzed about music companies in the country, one that you actually admired.
And you were lucky when they didn’t kick you out at the audition for not reading directions.
You easily arrived at the Big Hit offices. When you checked in, you were given a water bottle and asked to wait. Two minutes past four, you were ushered into a conference room with six people already sitting at a sleek, modern conference table. Everyone at the table got up to shake your hand and you reciprocated, bowing in respect as you did so. After taking a seat, the woman who was in your audition came in, shut the door, and sat at the head of the table. Everyone quickly settled in for the meeting.
“Everyone, this is Y/L/N Y/F/N, the one we found through the open audition,” the woman said, smiling. A bit of excitement shifted through the group. You smiled at the group, gripping the hem of your sweatshirt tightly, needing something to hold on to in order to not just internally combust.
“Oh she’s the one that couldn’t read the audition notice?” one of the producers asks. He looks nice enough, wears glasses, and looks like he hasn’t ever worn a suit in his entire life. You try not to look embarrassed but it’s hard not to when a handful of the other producers laugh.
“Yes, she is.” the woman says, “but it’s hard to ignore talent. I know some of you have seen the tape but we’ll play it again as a quick refresher.” You wait until the lights go out and the video is pulled up to hide your face in your fingers. You hated watching yourself on tape and listening to your singing voice. The tape started up, showing you almost tripping over the cord of your looper mic.
You heard the lyrics come through the conference room speakers and you wanted to disappear. Seeing other people react to a video of you projected onto a big screen, singing a rather personal song, made your stomach clench and the breath catch in your throat. You’d hoped that someone would whisper or talk to the person next to them while the video was playing to ease the tension in your head and in your heart but everyone remained silent until the lights came back up.
“Wow,” said a voice. You saw a woman, probably the only other female producer at Big Hit. The one who went by ADORA. She definitely had been one of your inspirations to audition. The only female staff producer at Big Hit.
All  the producers were starting to talk amongst one another, and you couldn’t help but feel a bit of sweat appearing. You looked from the female executive from your audition to the rest of the group, letting your eyes wander around the room, too embarrassed to keep your vision in one place. Why were you like this? Couldn’t even confidently take a compliment.
“I’m glad that you all could meet with Y/N today. I wanted to get everyone together to get to know her. I also asked her to bring some of her other work. I know we are about to gear up on some big projects and I thought she might be a good addition to the production team,” she continued.
A tall man sitting towards the middle raised his hand to speak, “Why don’t you play some of your work. Maybe the full length version from your audition song and maybe one of your favorites?”
“Sure,” you said, trying not to fumble with the backpack between your legs. You push yourself out to get into the bag. You grabbed your laptop, trying not to make a bunch of noise while doing so but failing, and pulled up the full length file of your audition song. Testing the volume, it’s definitely loud enough for all the producers in the room to hear it. With a quick breath, you press play. While your looper played a part in the recording, there are other instruments--guitar and piano specifically--and all the producers at the table quiet to listen.
It’s the longest two and a half minutes of your life as they listen. Your fingers drum against your thighs as the song soars to it’s climax, your nails digging a bit into them as well, palms sweaty. This song is is raw for you but that’s something you don’t want to let on.
It ends and everyone sounds and looks pleased as you look around.
It was then that you realized there was someone sitting in an armchair on the far side of the room. Arms folded over one another, bucket hat low over their eyes. But your attention is pulled away when someone else at the table speaks up.
The producer eagerly says, “What else do you have?”
You quickly sift through your media player list before stopping on a song titled “It Carries.” Your heart stops for a moment. This song is one of your favorites but it also is a painful reminder. Not just about a past you’d like to forget but a humiliation that your best friend Seoyun would tell you was not your fault. You didn’t realize that you just sat there quietly for a beat too long.
“Y/N?” the lady executive asks.
“Sorry,” you say quickly, shaking it off, “Was stuck between two…Hm, this one is called ‘It Carries.’ I actually wrote it for...an old friend. He’s the one rapping, but I wrote everything.”
Throwing your nerves into the wind, you press play, letting the 808-filled beat fill the conference room. Again the room goes silent, that that makes you nervous. Beginning vocals finish and the rap begins, you notice the person in the back of the room lean forward, elbows on their knees. It doesn’t help that you can’t see their face. They’re probably another one of the producers.
The party that wrenches your heart the most comes up and you have to remind yourself to breathe. You take a deep breath but it’s shakier than you were planning on it to be.
‘But you say “it’s fine, it’s fine, it’s fine Words aren’t always necessary” My heart squeezes in love and in thanks And I don’t feel as broken as before’
As it finishes, you let out a breath you didn’t realize that you were holding. There is some applause but you aren’t really paying attention. The tall producer raises his hand to quiet everyone again. “That was really amazing. You wrote those raps?” he asked.
“Yes... I wrote them,” you said, which was all you could manage. Your nerves were still bubbling.
“The flow is amazing. The rapping is good but the lyrics…” he trailed off.
“The rapper had an exceptional songwriter to help him out,” said a deep, slightly scratchy voice. It came from the person in the back, the one whose face you couldn’t see in the dimmed light of the conference room. You looked as closely from where you sat and when he raised his head, you tried not outwardly gasp.
Your complimenter was none other than Min Yoongi, Suga of BTS, one of the most well-known and spoken-about young producers in the industry. But...why was he sulking in the back of a preliminary producer meeting? Didn’t he have songs to write, press to do, anything else but sit in on your meeting? Why in the heck was he here? And he listened to some rather personal songs of yours too. Your face had never felt so hot.
“You’re absolutely right,” the female executive said, making no comment as to why the idol was sitting in the back of this meeting.
The tall producer came back around. “You’ve got an interesting point of view and I’d love to see what you can do. I work with BTS but am also overseeing the new boy group who are working towards their debut.”
You perked up a bit, your attention finally at least partly restored after having been trying really hard not to start at the international superstar just sulking in the corner of the room.
“Really?” you asked, a smile forming on your lips, your eyes moving to bulge just slightly out of your head. Was this all really happening?
“Really,” he said, smiling, “You won’t be exclusive to any team but I think you’d be a great use to many of the projects currently in the words at BigHit.” Everyone looked to be in agreement but your eyes couldn’t help but go back to Min Yoongi in the back. His arms still crossed, he didn’t have much of a reaction...despite what he said to you earlier; to be more specific, what he said about you.
The meeting started to die down and everyone was getting out of their chairs and talking. You took a sip out of your water bottle as two of the younger producers--whose names you recognized from the long list of BTS credits--included you into conversation, asking you about your influences. The rest of the time was spent talking to the two of them, as well as the other producers.
They both gave you their numbers as they mentioned they’d also be working on most of the current projects in production and that you’d be spending a lot of time together so getting to know one another would be beneficial. You wholeheartedly agreed and found them easy to talk to, quickly relaxing into the conversation. Getting to know them was like some sort of...weird reality.
You felt as if you might have to pinch yourself any second.
You were talking to one of the younger producers when they beckoned someone over. You looked over your shoulder to see Suga of BTS--Min Yoongi, if you were to be more correct in this situation--holding a soda can between his fingers. You hadn’t seen him talk to anyone until now besides the female executive from earlier.
“Hey, hyung,” one of the guys said to him, “Ready to go back to the studio?”
He turned his gaze from his drink to the producer and you could finally really see his face, even if it was still partly hidden under his hat. The first thing that definitely struck you was his eyes. Dark and intense, not that you didn’t already know that. You’d seen pictures of him, seen his performances at all the music award and variety shows. But cameras and televisions rarely captured the true reality. They were truly stunning.
It was then. It was then that it really hit you that Min Yoongi was standing a mere four feet away from you. He was perhaps one of the biggest inspirations for auditioning for Big Hit in the first place. You never really considered yourself ARMY but you respected the group and their interest in being involved in the creation of their work. Especially the rap line as they also were considered the main contributors. You admired what they and BigHit doing, what they stood for.
And you had a feeling that you were going to get to be part of it.
You tried not to visibly vibrate with excitement right in front of him. Why would you be calm and collected around him? You’d never met any idols or famous actors, singers, etc. in your entire life. It was jarring to realize that he was just hanging out in the back of the conference room while you showed some of your personal work with the producing team. You rarely shared your music with your family, let alone your friends. Seoyun, was the only one who could pry the work out of you...but usually under force or threat.
But she of all people knew what these two songs meant to you. And having a famous idol hear your work before you even knew he was in the room...it scattered your brain just a bit. You still kind of felt like an idiot, though.
“Yeah, sure,” Yoongi said in a low and tired-sounding timbre.
Part of you was curious as to what they are working on and part of you kind of wanted to ask if you can tag along. But the realist side of you laughed at the idea. You haven’t been in the building more than two hours and you were already itching to know more, do more, see more. But you keep quiet because you knew it was just your excitement. Nothing like this had ever happened in your life and you’re still not even sure if it’s even real. You could wake up at any moment. It’s a dream, right?, you keep asking yourself.
It’s not. It’s the start of the rest of your life.
“Cool,” the other producer said, shoving their hands into their pockets. The water bottled crinkled a little in your hands. “It was really great meeting you, Y/N. Work calls but we’ll see you soon, yeah? I think the plan is to get into get things set up in the next week,” he continued.
“Sounds great,” you replied genuinely. The two producers turned towards Yoongi and the three of them started to leave but before they could make head way out of the conference room, the man in question turned back towards you with a hand raised in a non-moving wave.
“See you around,” he said.
“You too,” you managed to respond, returning the small wave but dropping that hand to wrap around your other wrist in front of you. You couldn’t help the smile that appeared on your face. Your first two words to Min Yoongi. They could have been worse...or more embarrassing.
Seriously, you needed someone to slap you back to reality.
He turned around and left with the two producers. One was Shin Donghyuk--also known as Surpeme Boi--and the other was Kim Yunseo, a newer addition to the BigHit team, but you had been familiar with some of his independent work before he joined. They were going to be heavily involved in the work for the upcoming projects, both BTS’ comeback and the new boy group debut.
Tossing your finished water bottle in the appropriate bin, the female executive who rooted for you, Lee Hayoon, approached you. She had a stern yet friendly smile as she came towards you, with the producer known as ADORA in tow.
“I hope you are enjoying yourself. I see you you already met Donghyuk-ssi and Yunseo-ssi. That’s great because you’ll be working with them a lot,” she said, “We considered hiring a new slew of producers for the new group but Donghyuk insisted on working both albums. Yunseo is, after you, the newest producer. Glad to have you on the team, Y/N.”
The woman you knew to be known as ADORA smiled. “My name is Moon Eun-hye,” she said, making a small bow, “It’s so nice to have another woman on the team finally. Your work is stunning for how young you are.” You beam just a bit as you really respect her work as ADORA.
“Thank you so much. I really admired your work on the last album,” you said returning the bow, trying not to gush. Eun-hye seemed so low-key and dresses casually, much like how you usually dress. What you were currently wearing was you dressing up to impress. This girl made sweats and a ripped t-shirt look cool.
“Aw, thanks,” she said, “Seriously...I can’t wait to work with you. Us girls definitely have to stick together.” She gave you her number and the three of you talked about what was next. Hayoon said that you’d be looped in with the studio/recording coordinator to get updated on the current schedule. They’d be doing a few team dinners for the various projects that were coming up, coinciding with whatever you got placed on. Whether it was primarily the BTS comeback or the boy group debut. Hayoon assured that you’d have time to learn about the group once and if you started working with them, if that was the decision that would go first.
The get together finally died down and you said your goodbyes, only a few hours later getting various calendar invites. You’d be officially signing your contract the next time you came to BigHit. You were having your brother-in-law--a lawyer--look it over before you signed.
Those technicalities and small things were the last things on your mind. You were making your dreams come true and you were doing it on your own.
You also couldn’t wait to tell the people who loved and supported you the most.
Tumblr media
An important event was coming up so the dance, studio, and overall rehearsal schedule was in full swing. Not only did the guys have to share a company with a new group, the company was flocking with new people and faces due to obvious and needed expansion. While they all thought that they knew everyone, there was always someone new popping out from the woodwork.
“Hey, hyung,” Jimin shouted over towards Namjoon while sitting on the floor stretching, “Did you hear about the new producer they just hired?” Both Jimin and Jungkook were fanned out on the floor, getting ready for a dance practice. Hoseok was already in front of the mirror, lightly going through the steps as usual.
“I did,” Namjoon said, rubbing the back of his neck, “I don’t know anything other than that the producer is a girl.”
Jimin and Jungkook both looked at one another. Eun-hye-noona was the only other female producer so this was an interesting development. You’d be the second female staff producer so of course you were of interest. The way you got hired, too, was definitely something that triggered a lot of attention as well.
“What’s going on?” Taehyung asked as he walked over and sat down to join the rest of the youngers.
“The new producer they just hired is a girl,” Jungkook said excitedly. The four of them were talking amongst themselves while Hoseok was still working in front of the mirror, Jin was sitting on a rolling chair playing a game on his phone and Yoongi was getting some water. Shaken from his thoughts, he heard Jimin over his shoulder.
“Yoongi-hyung, do you know anything about the new girl producer?” Jimin asked, Jungkook and Taehyung hanging onto the question.
“She’s good,” he said casually, turning back to his water bottle. Exclamations erupted.
“You heard her work????” Taehyung asked, breaking the commotion.
Yoongi put the bottle down, turned around, and walked over to the four guys. They were all awash with excitement and moved in towards him as well.
“What do you mean?” Jungkook asked. Jimin followed, leaning his hands and arms over Jungkook’s shoulder in expectation.
“I was at the studio and Hayoon-noona asked me to sit in on a meeting,” Yoongi said, crossing his arms, looking up at towards the brim of the baseball cap on his head.
“So, she’s actually good?” Namjoon asked, looking Yoongi over in question, “I’m surprised they even met with her a second time after all that confusion.”
Yoongi whipped out his phone, deciding to pull up the song he asked Hayoon to send over to him. “She brought a looper in with her for her audition. You can’t really ignore that. It’s creative”
Namjoon’s eyes widened. “Wow, that’s actually really cool,” he said, watching Yoongi pull up the song. Namjoon called out for Jin and Hobi to come over.
“I asked Hayoon-noona to send me the song she played for us in the meeting,” Yoongi added, moving to press play.
“What is this-” Jin said before Jimin cut him off with a ‘Shhhh’
A hip hop tone with a bit of electronic and tropical flowed through the horrible iPhone speakers, filling the studio. Hobi and Jungkook immediately started moving their head and shoulders while the others listened intently.
It was the “It Carries” song that you had played the group in your meeting.
The vocals and rap line move seamlessly on top of the melody and production. Namjoon’s chin sits in his hands as he moves it along, deep in though. Yoongi doesn’t move or sway but he’s super intent on listening to the song, something he done a number of times since asking Hayoon-noona to send it to him.
“Who’s rapping?” Jimin asks. By this time, he’s moving his fingers to the beat.
“Don’t know,” Yoongi said, “He’s okay, I guess, but what’s more interesting is that she wrote all the rap and lyrics in addition to producing the song.” Namjoon and Hoseok were intrigued. “She’s only a year older than Kookie,” he said as the song came to its end. Everyone was surprised by that. Once again, they all erupted into conversation.
“Take notes, Kookie,” he said, pocketing his phone and looking pointedly at the maknae, “If you want to continue producing music…”
“Don’t come for me, Yoongi-hyung,” Jungkook said defiantly. The others laughed at the exchange. “Regardless....you seem to know a lot about her,” Jungkook teases. The others join in and it takes Yoongi what’s left of his energy to not say something back.
After practice ended, he ended up spending the majority of the night at the studio after Hoseok and Yunseo left. The three of them were working on a song but Yoongi wanted to to stay behind after they left.
He had been working on some tweaks for a collaboration with a huge western artist but all of a sudden, a thought came to him. A rush of inspiration had led him to his piano and he laid down a melody line. It was one of the first things he was truly proud of and something that wasn’t spurred by necessity. It was something just for him in that moment, something that brought a wide smile to his face as he reached for the soggy iced Americano on his desk.
Maybe it would be something he’d save for the next mixtape. Maybe...just maybe he wouldn’t have to wait that long.

Your family was so proud.
They had been apprehensive of you pursuing music because of the question of stability but in the end, they just wanted you to be happy. You went to university to please them, but majored in music production. They felt more secure in that choice. Sound engineers were always in demand, at least. That’s how they thought anyway. You couldn’t blame them and you did want to make them proud. But there were moments when you were sure that you knew yourself. You knew that you could never do a job that you weren’t passionate about.
You’d always been sensitive and pursuing medicine or an office job...you had a feeling ity would essentially destroy you.
You had lovely friends in university, most of whom you are still close to, but well into your second year, you met and started dating another music production major. Even thinking or saying his name was still painful, though. It had been months since you broke up and you’d begun to heal. Your heart was finally mending and your friends and music were your saving graces. You don’t know where you would be without Seoyun’s pushy behavior or your sister’s quote-laden pep talks over skype or the cave that was your music studio set up in your small studio apartment. The tail end of your relationship had caused a lot of rifts in your heart and life. While you didn’t rearrange your whole life, there were a lot of things you changed after your break up.
After appearing on a famous reality rap show and making it to the end...the funny, charming, aspiring rapper you called your boyfriend and best friend dumped you over text message.
You had relied on your family and friends a lot in the past several months. So seeing you happy about something again made them happy. You really hated being a burden to your friends and family. The idea that they worried so much about you did a number on your anxiety. All you wanted was for your parents and friends to be proud of the artist and person you were. Working for one of the most talked-about music companies in the industry was only something you’d dreamed about. Music had been your life since you were little, ever since you had begged for piano and guitar lessons. Practicing piano for hours a day was a hassle to most of your friends but to you, those lessons were the best part of your week. Guitar quickly became a second love, too.
Before this opportunity, you had seriously considered moving back with your parents, the small cafe job you had up until now barely even helping you make rent. But you knew that you’d soon be getting a paycheck from one of the most profitable companies in music. You deleted that email draft to your landlord, stating that you’d be leaving at the end of your lease.
Things were looking up in more ways than one.
In celebration, your best friend in the world, Park Seoyun, had convinced you to go out the Saturday before your first day officially at BigHit.
She was a social butterfly and had a lot of cool and influential friends. Sometimes you weren’t sure whiy she still kept you around but she did. While she was also the fun friend, she was also the mom friend. Always nagging you and making sure you were taking care of yourself, not just while you were both in university. She actually worked at one of the big companies in a coordinator position and she knew where anyone who was anything would be. Dominoing into tonight, she knew someone who could get the two of you through the VIP entrance to one of the hottest clubs in Seoul.
Clubs were never one of your things but once in a while, letting loose didn’t sound like a horrible idea. However, she’d dressed you up. You weren’t a super fashionable person. You liked a more athletic look in contrast to Seoyun’s sexy, feminine fashion sense. In your signature black, she squeezed you into a short turtleneck bodycon dress and some of her more stable, platformed boots. Heels had always been your enemy and you threw anything that had a stiletto back her way. She had to concede.
As she promised, getting in was a breeze. You were able to slink right in, of course pissing off all the people in the line that wrapped around the block. You couldn’t help but smile a little as the two of you tripped over your own feet into the club.
Your friend insisted on taking a photo before entering the VIP section, where cameras were not allowed. You did your classic peace sign near your face in front of the neon light display. You assesed yourself in a mirror nearby. You looked cute, you guessed. Cute was the most you could muster. Sexy? Don’t even try, you’d tell yourself. Seoyun had a claim on that territory already. But you were fine with being cute. Sexy wasn’t something you actively tried to achieve. After touching up, you two made your way over to the VIP section. Seoyun made flirty small talk with the bouncer and the two of you were in there in seconds.
Yeah, there were definitely celebrities littering the area. Seoyun even walked right up to some actor that you recognized but couldn’t name….and they knew one another. You weren’t surprised as you took the hand the tall, handsome actor offered when greeting you. “Y/L/N, Y/N?”
“Uh, hi. How did you know my name?” you asked., honestly a little incredulous.
“Honestly Y/N, he went to school with us,” she said. Your eyes widened because you didn’t remember him. “It’s fine, you didn’t go out a lot. You may not know him.”
You rolled your eyes at her and apologized to him but you still smile a little because it was true. You had been too busy with your music and...your boyfriend. Maybe if you took your social life a little more seriously while in university, you’d have been friends with the actor too. Seoyun was your first year roommate and despite the two of you being soul twins, you both really were so different. Jisoo had been kind enough to get the three of you drinks so for a moment, he disappeared.
Seoyun stiffened and it caught you off-guard. What was she looking at? “Don’t look over your right shoulder are your new neighbors,” You scrunch your nose in confusion but quickly look, trying to mask it as a scratch.
“I said don’t look!” your friend screamed through her teeth and you quickly whip your head back in her direction in response to her order.
“Calm down,” you said, “Who’s there?” You were surprised any of them were there. They were notoriously absent from the party scene. At least, that’s what Seoyun said. Then again, so were you. At least you had that in common.
“Them. I think all of them,” she said but not sounding so sure, just as the actor--Lee Jisoo, whose name you just remembered--came back with three drinks. You definitely did see that drama with him in it. You had definitely watched the whole thing, too. He smiled at both of you as you clink your glasses together.
“Who’s here?” Jisoo asks after taking a sip. You suddenly feel awkward but Seoyun is quick to gab.
“BTS,” she said. Jisoo looked over and nodded with a thoughtful pout.
“I rarely see them out. Surprised, staff is loosening the reins,” he said. However, it didn’t look like they were being bothered by anyone. It was probably nice for them, you thought, that the could go out and blow off some steam without being harassed once in while.
“It just so happens that Y/N here is getting signed to BigHit,” she says after taking a large gulp of her drink. You gave her a look. Your contract wasn’t even signed yet and you didn’t want anything risking it but you let it go because on the other hand, your socially connected best friend was proud as hell of you.
“I’ll be working on various projects as a producer,” you say, keeping it that, just in case. You didn’t want anything to harm the signing of your contract. But you were proud. You were very excited. Jisoo congratulated you, said that he knew a few of the boys, and then laughed at something else Seoyun said. Sometimes you were jealous of her since she had such an easy way with people. You were the opposite most of the time. You were really shy until you eased yourself into the situation and got more comfortable. You had never been the type to just go up to people you didn’t know but you adapted quickly once you slotted in and often fed off the energy of others.
Continuing to talk, the three of you had managed to shift your standing positions so that the group was now at the edge of your peripheral. You didn’t want to go over and disturb them. Besides, you had only ever been introduced to Yoongi and that was only for a millisecond. You couldn’t even see Yoongi at the moment but what if he was there and he saw you and you saw him and he thought it was rude that you didn’t come over? You were used to overthinking things so you were hoping that even the smallest of sips would help ease the anxiety settling into the pit of your stomach like squishy rocks.
Why were you like this? Ugh.
You continued to flit in and out of the conversation with Seoyun and Jisoo and the feeling of them within your peripheral. Something unexpected happened instead. Two of members approached the three of you. Mid-sip you tried not to choke on the large gulp you just took.
“It’s Y/L/N, Y/N, right?” says the shorter of the two who approached. You were almost 100% certain that was Kim Taehyung. A large, wide smile and impeccable style. The taller, you knew, was Kim Namjoon, the leader of the group. You knew that for sure. But wait a minute, how---? How did they knew you were you? You looked around for a moment but still didn’t see Yoongi.
“Yes,” you said, your glass still held tightly between your fingers, “Hi.” You were glad that you managed at least those two words. He smiled at you and there was something about him that eased whatever nerves you had before. It was true. He didn’t look human in real life. You smile and make yourself take a deep breath. You’d likely be working with the group soon on their upcoming album. In a way, they were kind of your co-workers? Being nervous around them wasn’t going to make anything easier.
“It’s nice to actually meet you. We’ve heard a bit about you,” Namjoon chimes in, shaking your hand, followed by Tae. The two of them also introduce themselves to Seoyun and Jisoo, though Taehyung knew Jisoo as an acquaintance through mutual friends. The five of you fell into conversation and it wasn’t long before Jimin came and joined, introducing himself to you and your group.
“We loved your song, by the way,” Jimin said enthusiastically, “That hook…” Your eyes widened a little as you subconsciously pulled your lips in between your teeth, a small smile tearing at the corners. Some of the most celebrated artists in the industry loved your work. Sometimes, this kind of validation could be enough to drag you out of your shy comfort zone.
“Oh, thank you so much,” you said, “Which song?” You were doing all you could to not visibly shake. Park Jimin had the voice of an angel and if you were lucky enough to keep impressing BigHit, he might end up singing your work.
“I think it was “It Carries”?” Jimin said, calling over your shoulder, “Yoongi-hyung, Y/N’s song you played for us...it was “It Carries,” right?” You turned over your shoulder a little too quickly, hitting Jisoo in the face with your hair. You muttered a quick sorry to him. They’d passed around your song. God, your face couldn’t be any warmer, right?
“Yeah,” he said, expressionless, holding three drinks, “that’s the one.” You forced yourself to breathe again. That song had been hard enough to show to the group as it was personal. The fact that the whole group had heard it caused your heart to palpitate. You knew that Hayoon had a copy of it but the idea that someone you didn’t know might have it on their computer or on their phone or in their texts...it was still a little unnerving. A compliment, likely, but still unnerving.
Yoongi moved to hand the three of his group members drinks, which they accepted. “Nice to see you again,” he said to you, shaking his bangs out of his face. There were his eyes again. Soft despite his monotone. He sounded sincere but not overzealous or as if he was saying it to be polite. He was dressed nicely in a simple black blazer, black t-shirt and black jeans. Simple. Unlike what they usually wore for press, concerts, etc.
“You too,” you say in response, feeling yourself ease a little, taking another sip. He seemed perfectly relaxed, as if playing your song for everyone was just the most casual thing he could do...while across from him, your stomach was in knots. However, part of you felt at ease because he took it so casually, as if this whole thing wasn’t changing your life. As if all of this was natural. It was a paradox you couldn’t quite keep away from.
Seoyun who was having a good time, raised her glass. “Just want to make a quick toast to Y/N’s first day on Monday. I have a very hard-working, tireless, and multi-talented best friend,” she said, smiling and leaning into Jisoo just a bit. Your best friend was sweet but a bit of a lightweight, “Cheers to Y/N!!!” Everyone in the circle smiled and joined in.
The rest of the night flew by in a fun frenzy and the three of you ended up joining the group at their booth. You met Hoseok, Jin, and Jungkook shortly after, the three of them working their way through the fancy handle of Grey Goose vodka among their assorted bottle service. Hoseok was definitely the most tipsy and when a song he loved came on, he even pulled Seoyun and yourself in to dance. He was twirling you both around playfully and jokingly, but still managing to dance with more grace than anyone you personally knew.
When Hoseok released the two of you for a break, you found yourself deep in conversation with Namjoon and Yoongi while Seoyun managed to find herself flirting with both Jin and Jisoo. Namjoon and Yoongi both seemed interested in your music taste. They asked you about your musical influences and you found it really nice that they were just as nerdy about music as you were. For a moment, you could have gone to high school with them, as if they might have been in orchestra with you or jazz band.
“Epik High, Missy Elliott, Lady Sovereign, Beyoncé, CL....hands down of all time,” you said and as you took another sip of your drink, it finally made that awful slurping noise. You’d hit ice. Both Yoongi and Namjoon enthusiastically said that Epik High was one of their biggest inspirations to be rappers.
“Do you rap?” Namjoon asked and you couldn’t help be shake your head no. Performing was not in your wheelhouse. God, your audition was nerve wracking enough. Performing in front of hundreds of people? No thank you.
“No, not at all,” you said, “But I like to write them.”
“Like your song,” Yoongi said,, “That was a beautiful rap. You definitely could, if you wanted to.” You softened at the words coming out of his mouth and then some more when Namjoon agreed.
“Yu obviously have amazing musicality. Just like this one here,” Namjoon said, motioning at Yoongi. Yoongi just raised his shoulders the tiniest bit in response. An acknowledgment rather than an agreement.
Namjoon then asked you what you were currently listening to but you were interrupted for a second as Yoongi took the drink from you, leaning down towards the large low table, presumably to top you off.
You quickly snapped back to what Namjoon was saying. “Oh, lately I’ve been listening to WOODZ, Jvcki Wai, and I love Robyn’s newest album,” you say.
“I like Jvcki’s lyrics. Very aggressive flow, too,” Namjoon says enthusiastically and you nod in agreement.
“She doesn’t take prisoners. I think what she is doing is really cool,” you add, “Especially as a woman in hip hop.” You think of her song ‘Anti-’ All your friends really liked music but you were so excited to be working at a company where everyone had the same passion.
“People think she uses a lot of autotune but that’s actually usually just her voice,” you say with a laugh. Both Namjoon and Yoongi smile at your comment, the second handing you a newly made drink.
“Thanks,” you say, taking the tumbler from his hands. A small smile appeared on Yoongi’s lips as he finished making himself another drink. “Lady Sovereign, though?” he asked and you know he’s making fun of you.
“What can I say? My ten year old self was obsessed,” you say, smiling and thinking about the time you dressed up as her for a costume party in elementary school. The few small braids, the side ponytail, and tracksuit were still a look. Taking another gulp of your drink, you were trying to remember which number you were on. You could feel the alcohol in your cheeks at this point. You were tall for a girl and usually you weren’t much of a lightweight. You could handle your liquor but you’d always feel it in your face two drinks in. The feeling was comfortable but the thought of looking drunker than you were was not.
“I was curious, though,” Namjoon said all of a sudden, “Who was the rapper on your track?” You froze for a second for responding just a little too quickly. “An old friend,” you said, perhaps a little colder than you meant. You were trying to convince yourself that your reaction was due to the alcohol, but your face gave away everything.
“Oh, he sounds kind of familiar. That’s the only reason I ask,” Namjoon said and if he caught on to your demeanor change, he didn’t let on. It wouldn’t be surprising if Namjoon had heard of your boyfriend. He did win a huge rap reality show.
As you took another sip, Seoyun came over, dragging Jisoo and Jin with her. Jin was very drunk and leaning onto Seoyun, earning him an annoyed look from Jisoo. “So, I think the plan is for us to ditch and go get yangnyeom tongdak in say...five minutes?” he said, looking at his watch, a fancy digital contraption that flashed 1:00 AM. Wow, you didn’t realize how much time flew by.
Yoongi was the first to reply, as if relieved. “Sounds great to me,” he said, taking the happiest sip of alcohol you thought you’d ever seen. He then drained the whole thing, practically slamming it onto the table, and wiped his mouth with the side of thumb. “Ready!!” He exclaimed, smile on his face. You looked at him in the eye and there was a silent agreement when both of your eyes met.
Food > Clubbing.
Jin, despite how drunk he was, managed to coral all seven boys plus the three of you into the van waiting for you at the back of the club. Everyone toppled in with Seoyun strung out across Jisoo, Jin, and Jungkook in the back. Yoongi shuffled in, helping you up, Taehyung, Hoseok, and Jimin pulling in the rear. The four of them squeezed together and grabbed you to lay out similarly to Seoyun. Taehyung and Hoseok held onto your torso while your head ended up awkwardly pressed against Yoongi’s armpit. You laughed as they hoisted you up, making sure you were comfortable.
The buzz was hanging high in your head and you could hear Seoyun, Hoseok, and Jungkook singing to “thank u, next” as it started on the van speakers. You didn’t sing but every time “next” was said, you punched the air above you with your palms. Minutes and several songs later, the van stopped and both Seoyun and you were hoisted out of the car. Yoongi and Hoseok gave you a hand out, and then lead you through the dark back entrance of the chicken place. All of you stumbled into a large room in the back, not completely closed off from the main restaurant but private enough where no one would know they were back there unless they went looking.
Sliding along the modern wooden bench in your dress proved difficult, Seoyun and Jisoo fumbling in next to you while Yoongi slid his legs through the opening between the table and bench, managing it without making too much of a ruckus. Jin and Yoongi ended up across from one another, both excitedly together. They ordered what seems like a feast for 25 people--not the ten actually there--and as they went through a list that included sweet and spicy chicken, honey garlic chicken, bulgogi flavored chicken, french fries, pickled raddish, and tteokbokki, you finally hear your stomach growling. It didn’t evade Yoongi and Jin’s ears. “Wow that was loud,” you say, trying to laugh it off, a little too drunk to be completely embarrassed. Jin immediately said to their waitress to make it fast as “the lady is hungry.”
Beer and soju arrive and despite the fact you don’t think you can fit any more alcohol in your body. Jin and Jimin challenge everyone to shots of soju and you managed to find more space in your stomach. Not the heaviest of drinkers, you quickly get more comfortable in your surroundings and you finally get the up the courage to pry. You turn to Yoongi and straight up ask him, “What were you working on with Donghyuk-sunbae and Yunseo-sunbae?” Yoongi finished his shot of soju, putting the glass back down on the table with a loud click, then crossed his arms on the ledge of the table.
“Group number for the new album,” he answered, his voice low and a bit slurred, “Trying to decide if we should do something nostalgic or something different. The concept is a lot...dirtier this time? I guess that’s the best way to describe it?” You mimic his arm position without realizing it, leaning onto the edge of the table in front of you. “Why not both?”
Your question makes him laugh. “How would we do that?” he asked, split between confused and curious. You could feel the gears in your brain start to turn. Figuring out the feel of songs you wanted to work on was one of the best parts in your opinion; thinking about what you wanted to convey was a rush. You had an idea of what you were trying to say but fuck it if he laughed it.
“Just think about it, okay,” you say, weirdly proud of yourself, “Do You Think It Makes Sense? meets ‘Tear.’ Maybe really bring out that R&B feel. Hmmmm...there is this really good sample from ‘Gossip Fools’ by Missy Elliott featuring Ludacris, actually.”
“You really dug into the library on that first song,” he said with a smirk. You can’t help but smile. It was true and you had done some refreshing on the BTS library in the last few weeks. Of course, you’d always been familiar with them but the song was a few years old. He looked at you for a moment, contemplating something. It wasn’t a lie that he made you nervous, but the alcohol was helping….for the both of you apparently. “Play the sample,” he said, looking pointedly at your phone.
“What?” you ask, as in...really, dude? But you’re reaching for you phone. You pull up your library and he takes his phone from you and clips the song, which is now playing on full volume. A few of the guys stop talking and look over. Immediately Hoseok starts moving to it and shouts, “MIIIIIIISSSY!!!”
“But slowed down a bit, I think?” you added, and you look at Yoongi’s face and a few gears of his appear to be turning. He turns down the speed to 0.75 instead of normal. Soon enough, they all seem interested in what’s going on. “Definitely more dirty if you slow it down,” you say, without really thinking what you’re saying and a little louder than you mean to.
The guys burst into laughter and it takes everything in you to not just sink into a puddle beneath the table. You’re could feel all  the blood rush to your face. “Just an idea,” you say smally, putting your arms back in your lap. Hoseok starts rapping along to it and after a moment, you can’t help but lightly join. You loved Missy.
Everyone eventually went back to their conversations while Yoongi and you ended up pouring over your music library, smirking at a few embarrassing entries. He even convinced you to play some some random things you’d been working on, including a few piano ramblings. You also mentioned that you also had played guitar since childhood. Piano was your favorite though, you admitted, and he smiled warmly at that and agreed. It was a little off-putting, his smile. It didn’t fit his preapproved aura but it looked so nice among his features. After ribbing you for having “The Shape of My Heart” by the Backstreet Boys on your Spotify’s “Most Recent,” you two eventually looked up to see that food had arrived and everyone was eating. The both of you were quick to pile your plates with chicken and tteokbokki.
You’d never met anyone as passionate about music as you and even though you were sure it was the liquid courage talking, you felt comfortable talking to the rapper. Despite what public decreed his personality to be, it didn’t feel like that when the two of you gushed over the use of vintage 808s. With a mouth full of sweet and spicy chicken, no less. Maybe it was because you could relate and not just on a musical level. You weren’t as outgoing as Seoyun, who was currently threatening to throw a rice cake at Jin, her personality counterpart. You felt at home in your own head and maybe that made you shy in regards to others’ standards. But...sometimes it was moments like these that you felt free enough to talk to someone you admired without getting nervous, without letting your nerves completely immobilize your ability to communicate.
Fuck, you ate too quickly. Part of you just wanted to lay down on your own plate, but there you were...taking another bite of rice cake, trying as you might to fit two whole ones in your mouth. After a moment, Yoongi’s low voice and shoulder jolted you out of your food and beer trance. “Yeah?” you said, mouth full of rice cake.
“Would you want to work on something?” he asked, straight-faced.
A chunk of rice cake might just have fallen out of your mouth at his question. You tried not to look too mortified when he couldn’t contain his laughter. God, you were hopeless. “Um, work on something?” you asked, sure that you couldn’t have heard right.
“With me, yeah. No thoughts on what but...even for fun? Just in general?” he said, rubbing the back of his neck with his free, ringed hand, both of which were turning red due to alcohol. Not that you were clued in enough to notice. Your eyes weren’t even focusing anywhere because you might still have been in shock. But you felt the heat in your face and a fluttering in your heart. There was part of you that couldn’t help but stare. This was was more conversation than you would have expected between the two of you.
“Y-Yeah,” you say, scrambling with a napkin to pick up the rice cake that had hit the table in a bright red splat. You wrapped it up and set it to the side. Did you really hear correctly? Did you just say yes, too? Everything was a little buzzy and raw in your head right at that moment. This whole experience...getting hired by BigHit had sent everything into hyperdrive.
Were your dreams really coming true?
“I would love that,” you couldn’t help by say. You went for another rice cake, careful to keep it from dropping from your chopsticks. Stuffing it into your mouth without caring what you looked like, you sighed. Late night drunk eating was the best. “Almost as much as this rice cake,” you add, grabbing another with and sliding the bowl closer to Yoongi, so he didn’t have to reach over.
“I’ll be honest. I’m honored,” he said, smiling, “This place has the best tteokbokki.” He dug in for some as well and the two continued to chat mostly about what you two were listening to at the moment, even joining in with the group on other topics that were a-buzz at the moment. Jungkook even hopped up to take a group photo of everyone and then a long selfie shot of the group. You leaned over the table to get past Seoyun, Yoongi leaning even farther but his face still ended up getting partially cut off by your head.
It was getting really late and while Yoongi told you the guys didn’t have a schedule tomorrow, they all had things that they probably should get done. They insisted on dropping Seoyun, Jisoo, and yourself off at your place before getting on their way. From there, you left Seoyun and Jisoo at the door to go their separate ways as you made your way up to your studio apartment. Your heart was beating really quickly but you weren’t sure if it was from the several flights of stairs you ascended or the adrenaline that was currently keeping you awake.
Everything felt fumbly as you made your way around your apartment to get ready for bed. You could have just passed out cold in your going-out clothes, crossbody still strapped to your body. However, you managed to peel everything off and throw it on the floor before you threw on the PJ’s you laid out on your bed in preparation. Quickly, you could feel a headache trying to form so you grabbed a large bottle of water from your fridge and placed it on your nightstand. You knew that if you chugged a bunch you’d be fine in the morning.  After getting part of your nighttime routine in, you practically swan dived under the covers, and cocooned yourself in the large down comforter.
Maybe all of tonight was a dream and you had just been in your bed for the last several hours. You didn’t fall asleep for at least an hour because you couldn’t help but stare at the ceiling, trying to put all your thoughts together. You were getting to do what you loved for a living. A trailblazing company took a chance on you after you failed to read instructions on a songwriting submission. But...you would wake up the next day to the text Yoongi sent to you so that you would have his number.
Yeah, that wasn’t a dream at all.

“...Stays Together.”
Requested by an anon. Cutie Changmo.
Tumblr media
Changmo X Female Reader (ft. Everyone’s Favorite Hash Swan and Illionaire and Ambition) Request: Where you and Changmo are sleeping and cuddling and the rest of the crew are fanboying over you two and posting pictures and videos of you guys on social media.
“Stop! You guys are so annoying! I’m too tired for this right now.” Changmo whined at them.
“We’re sorry but you guys are adorable! Everyone’s favorite OTP!” Deok Kwang said before snapping a couple of more pictures.
“Who the hell taught you that?” Changmo asked.
“The internet.”
You and Changmo were close friends as children. You couldn’t be separated no matter what happened between the two of you. Even if you’d fight, he’d buy you lunch and an I’m sorry card. Your family loved Changmo like another child. They invited him to a lot of family events.
Changmo was there for you through everything. If you needed him, he was there. Even if you didn’t need him, he was there. It unexpected, but the two of you were falling for each other. Neither one of you wanted to speak up first. It took your mother confessing to him for you, he returned your feelings and confessed as well.
It wasn’t long before the two of you began dating. In the very beginning, the two of you were trying to get used to being in relationship but a lot of the time you didn’t know if you were doing too much or too little, so you were often shy around him, even if he was your best friend. Months past and the two of you get more comfortable with each other.
You and Changmo had been in a relationship for three years now. He was finally getting recognized and you were proud of him. You were his number one supporter and no one could take your spot.
Fans didn’t even try. You and Changmo made the decision to tell the public about your relationship and it went well. Everyone loved the two of you together. You were an upcoming model and actress. You drew in a lot of attention because of your out of the ordinary looks. You were different but you knew you could make it far.
Though your relationship was public, neither of you really took pictures or posted about each others. You had many interviews, and all of them asked about Changmo at least once. The public wanted to know but you weren’t that open.
Changmo had just finished recording a new song and the boys were bothering him about you.
“Call Y/N! I want to see her.” Deok Kwang whined to Changmo.
“You’re the last person she wants to see right now.” Changmo added.
“Yeah. You spilt wine all over that dress that Changmo bought her for their third year anniversary. Do you really think she wants to see you right now?” Hyo Eun questioned.
“She’s probably over it. She doesn’t hold grudges, right Changmo?” Deok Kwang asked before softly hitting Changmo’s shoulder. Changmo shrugged his shoulders. His phone vibrated with a text from you.
‘I just got done recording an episode. Can I come see you now? I’ll bring all of you food.’ You texted.
‘Of course you Babe. Bring me food, they already ate.’ He replied.
‘Great! I love you.’
‘I love you too.’
You had just got down recording an episode for your upcoming drama. This was the third drama you would be in. At first Changmo was upset because this was a romance drama. Which meant, someone else was going to get to kiss you. But he got over it.
Finally you had made it to Illionaire with food for him. You walked in and greeted the receptionist.
“Changmo is in his studio.” She added.
“Thank you.”
You had made your way to his studio and knocked on the door.
“Come in!” Your heard Changmo’s voice.
You opened the door and bowed.
“Y/N! You’re here!” Deok Kwang smiled.
“Yah! You’re the last person I want to see right now.”
“What did I say?” Hyo Eun questioned.
Deok Kwang punched him in the shoulder.
“Your baby hands don’t hurt, Deok Kwang.”
“I don’t have baby hands!” Deok Kwang shouted, earning a giggle from you.
“Babe, come here. I haven’t see you all day.” Changmo called out to you from his chair.
You walked over and handed him his food.
“Your favorite.” You added before turning around.
He grabbed you by your waist from behind and pulled you onto the chair with him. “Finally! You’re in my arms again.”
“We saw each other just around three hours ago.” You giggled.
“That was three hours too long.” He whined softly in your ear.
“We’ll leave the two of you alone. Have fun, and use protection.” Hyo Eun smirked walking out of the room.
You only rolled your eyes before sighing and rubbing your eyes.
“Are you tired?” He asked.
You only nodded.
“You can sleep on the sofa right there. I still have a little bit of work to do.”
“NO! I want to cuddle.” You whined to him.
“Babe, get some rest. You still have filming tomorrow as well. I don’t need-”
“I’m not doing anything until you promise you’ll cuddle with me.” You pouted folding your arms.
“Since when do you act cute? Fine, go laid down and I’ll be over in a sec, okay?”
She smiled again and let out a soft, “Yay!”
You climbed out of his lap and laid down on the soft waiting for him to come over. He had this in because of the late nights he stays working on his music. He even had a blanket. You waited for him, he was taking way too long.
“Changmo.” You called out.
“Yes?” He said.
“Changmo.” You called out again.
“Yes?” He repeated.
“Changmo.”
“Baby, yes?”
“Changmo.”
“Yes?” He said getting more and more irritated.
You smirked. You knew how close he was to snapping. “Changmo.”
“WHAT?!” He screamed snapping his head back to you.
“Come here!” You shouted back at him.
He sighed before getting out from his desk and walking over to you. You smiled knowing you had won. He had climbed on the sofa with you. You rested your head on his chest. He kissed your forehead.
“Better?” He asked.
“No.” You answered before grabbing the blanket and turning off the light. You handed the blanket to him and got back on the sofa with him. He covered the both of you.
“Now is that better?” He asked.
“Much better.” You smiled while putting your head into his chest as you drifted off to sleep, as did he.
Hours later, Hyo Eun knocked on the door of the studio. “Guys? Hello?”
“Maybe they want more alone time.” Deok Kwang added.
“Get your phone out.” Joon Kyung said.
Hyo Eun slowly opened the door and turned on the light. He turned back to them and put a finger over his lip. “They are asleep.”
“Really?” Deok Kwang whispered.
Hyo Eun nodded and walked in. The four of them walked into the studio, with their phones out. They tiptoed over to the two of you and began to take videos and pictures of you two and put them all over their social medias.
“My OTP is sailing.” Hyo Eun added, snapping a couple of pictures of your sleeping faces.
“Can you believe my OTP is this cute?” Deok Kwang added.
“Do you even know what an OTP is?” Dong Gab asked.
“One True Pairing, duh. The literal definition of Y/N and Changmo.” Deok Kwang answered causing Dong Gab to roll his eyes.
“Hyo Eun, go live! Go live!” Joon Kyung whispered.
He nodded and went to his Instagram and went live. As the fans flooded in, the comments began to fill up with heartfelt comments, greetings and hellos from other countries.
‘Where are you?’ A fan questioned.
“We are all in Changmo’s studio. I’m with the crew.” Hyo Eun said, showing the fans all of them.
‘Where’s Changmo?’ Another fan asked.
“He’s asleep and cuddling with his girlfriend, Y/N. Look!”
He panned the camera over to them. “Aren’t they adorable? We have to be quiet, though.”
Fangirls and fanboys began to fill up the comments with ‘I Love You’ and ‘Awws’.
“My OTP is better than yours.” Joon Kyung teased.
“They are so cute!” Deok Kwang whispered loudly.
Changmo was awoken by the sound of Deok Kwang’s loud whispering, which was no better than his normal voice. Changmo opened his eyes but then closed them again upon seeing them.
“You guys! Stop! Y/N beat all of you into next year.” Changmo added covering his face with his free hand while his other hand was wrapped around you.
“You’re threatening us by using your girlfriend, that’s so cute.” Joon Kyung added, continuing to record.
‘Wake Y/N up!’ A fan commented.
“I would but Y/N gets cranky when she is woken up.” Hyo Eun replied.
“The internet.” Deok Kwang replied with a small smile.
All of the noise, woke you up and you opened your eyes to see the sudden flash on Deok Kwang’s camera from his phone.
“What’s going on?” You questioned, rubbing your eyes.
You looked up to see Hyo Eun, Deok Kwang, Joon Kyung, and Dong Gab holding their phones.
“What are you guys doing?” You asked.
“Nothing.” Hyo Eun answered.
“ARE YOU GUYS TAKING PICTURES?!” You screamed.
“Maybe. Hyo Eun is live” Joon Kyung whispered.
Your eyes widened. You quickly covered your face. “No! I don’t want to be recorded right now. I just woke up.” You whined.
“Well you look as beautiful as you are awake.” Hyo Eun added.
Changmo cleared his throat and glared at Hyo Eun, who raised one of his hands up in defeat.
“I’m going to beat all of you into next week!” You threatened.
“I told you guys.” Changmo added.
“I couldn’t help it, you guys are so cute.” Deok Kwang replied.
“I’m going back to sleep.” You huffed and laid your head back on Changmo’s covered chest.
“Come on, guys we should leave them alone. We don’t want to them getting comfortable, now do we?” Dong Gab said teasingly.
“Yeah, we don’t want to see what they do when we aren’t here. We’ll go.” Joon Kyung teased dragging Hyo Eun and Deok Kwang out of the room.
“Use protection!” Deok Kwang shouted back into the room.
You took off your shoe as well as Changmo and the two of you threw it at him.
“OUCH! What was that for?”
“A couple who does stuff together, stays together.” Changmo smirked.

Hunting for Gems
episode 5 part 1
ash island x reader
prev | next
When Ash Island is forced to participate as a producer for the latest season of Show Me the Money, he knows it won’t be easy. But when his partner is you, a rising producer from H1GHR, maybe it won’t be as bad as he thought.
--------------------------
“Come on.”
“No way,” you refute.
You and Ash have been holed up in his studio all night. The 1-on-1 battles are wrapping up, and the crew battles will be next. And after that will be the producers' stages, so you and Ash have been spending a lot of time preparing.
“It would just be one song! Out of the four that I’m doing! What’s the big deal?” For the past ten minutes, Ash has been trying to convince you to sing for your shared stage with him.
"I just don't see why I'd need to! Plenty of other producer-artist duos have come on the show, and the producer was deejay for the artist's performance. Why can't we do the same?" you argue back.
You've never sung in front of a live audience before, and this is going to be a pretty big stage. You don't want to mess it up for Ash.
Ash isn't having any of it, though. "Because that's what everyone will be expecting. Think about how surprised they'll be when they hear you sing for the first time," he reasons.
"Have you considered how shocked they'll be when they realize I'm terrible?"
"Is that what this is about?" he turns the questions back onto you. "You're worried you'll mess up?" You give him a look, you thought that would have been obvious by now. Of course you're scared of ruining his performance.
"You're a good singer!" he tells you. "Come on, it'll be fun." You highly disagree with that statement.
"Fun would be maybe performing in a club, for less than a hundred people. This would be a crowd of 1,000 people, who, I might add, are going to rank me, and it'll be broadcasted on national television!" You can feel the nerves just from imagining it.
"Look," Ash tries to calm you down, "it's not that big a deal." Easy for him to say, he's performed for crowds of thousands.
He continues on, "I'll be there the whole time backing you up, and you'd just have to sing a couple lines, maybe the bridge. And we're literally writing the song, so you have full control over what you end up singing."
He's making a pretty compelling argument for himself. You're having a hard time turning him down seeing how much he seems to want this to happen.
After a couple more seconds of hesitation, you budge. "Fine! I'll do it."
"Yes!" Ash goes as far as doing a fist pump into the air.
You let out a big sigh but can't help sharing a bit of his excitement. "Let's start writing."
-----
Round 4: Crew Battles
Crew battles are back! Due to explosive responses to it in prior seasons, the low-stakes round of rap battles returns, but with a twist.
After much negotiation between the judges and the production team: this year there will be no eliminations from the crew battles.
Saf: We're really happy that the production team went through with our request. The constant competition and fighting for your spot can get so stressful.
Ash: Having been on one of these shows myself, I agree. This'll allow them to have some fun on stage, and we can scout everyone out ahead of the upcoming team selections.
-----
After an exciting round full of surprises, the producers give their feedback to the contestants.
Saf starts out by giving a compliment to Caylo, one of the more well-known rappers expected to win the show. "Every time I think 'is he really that good? Is he worth all that hype he's getting?' your performances always prove to me: yes, you are worth the hype. Your bars were so sick today."
Caylo gives a bashful smile and thanks her. Then Ash Island moves on to give his own thoughts.
"One of the people who stood out most to me today was Lee Gunho," Gunho looks up in shock at hearing his name mentioned. "Nice job today."
He thanks Ash in a daze.
-----
"In all my years of knowing him," Hash Swan starts dramatically, "I've hardly ever heard Ash compliment anyone, much less another rapper."
He turns to Changmo as Ash rolls his eyes, "You ever hear him say anything like that before?"
"Nope," Changmo quips. "And he just did it for that kid two episodes in a row!"
Leella approaches Ash with a cheshire grin. "Aw, someone must want Gunho on their team real bad."
"And we know that someone sure isn't Ash," Hash Swan adds. Cackles ensue.
Ash is quick to defend himself, "Hey, as partners in this show, it is both my job and Saf's to help each other reach the goals we want for our team. One of her goals is to get Gunho, and I'm just doing my part to make it happen."
The boys don't believe a word of it, though.
"Whatever you say, man," Changmo says with a patronizing smile.
Ash begrudgingly hits play, and sounds of the show fill the room.
-----
"You agreed to sing a song with Ash and not me?" Rohan asks in utter disbelief. "I've been asking you to do a featuring for me for years!"
"I think we're both aware of the different positions you and Ash hold in my life," you deadpan.
"Fine, that's true," Rohan agrees. "And just to be clear, I am very happy with my position in your life. The thought of dating you gives me chills."
"Right back at ya, buddy."
-----
"Wait!" you pause in the middle of the recording session. "What if I do super bad and then we're ranked last by everyone?"
Ash stops the music outside the booth.
"Dude!" he exclaims in exasperation. This might be the twentieth time you've stopped.
He continues, "I could not possibly care less about those rankings. It's just you, me, and this song we've spent over 100 hours on. Nothing else matters- Scratch that." He could tell you were nearly ready to interrupt him again, so he takes a moment to think over his next words.
"For you, the only thing that matters is you. If you're proud of yourself and enjoy what you're doing, that's enough. Okay? Leave all the worrying up to me," he finishes.
"But you never worry about anything," you refute.
He shrugs, "So this will be good practice."
And you, finally, let out a smile and continue working on that song.
"Wait, did you just call me dude?"

When Ash Island is forced to participate as a producer for the latest season of Show Me the Money, he knows it won't be easy. But when his partner is you, a rising producer from H1GHR, maybe it won't be as bad as he thought.
Show Me the Money X Episode 3 - Round 2: 60 Second Rap Evaluation
Round 2 continues! With so many rappers passing, recording time gets longer and longer. Many producers are stifling yawns, some don't even bother trying to hide it.
Saf is slumped in her seat next to Ash. Eyes half-closed, she leans her head on his shoulder. "Why did we pass so many rappers in the first round? Can we just fail the rest of them?" she mutters wearily.
Ash chuckles. "Wow, you're much better at rejecting people when you're tired. Don't worry, it'll be over soon." And if he said this with a faint red tint to his cheeks, Saf was too tired to notice.
-----
Unfortunately for Ash however, the Ambition boys were not. In fact, they were quite awake, judging from their obnoxious laughter and how hard Changmo pinched Ash's cheek.
-----
For the first time, you weren't feeling that nervous as you entered the Ambition building. You've been there a few times to work with Ash now, so going up to his studio just feels like another part of your routine.
Of course, that would be the first time your routine is tossed firmly out the window.
"Saf!" Changmo greets. He's seated very comfortably in Ash's studio with Ash himself, Leellamarz, and Hash Swan.
"Hello," you reply a bit timidly. All these times you've been to Ambition, you've only interacted with the front desk people and Ash. You didn't know the rest of the boys very well, and they were all a bit older, making you very awkward.
Ash stands up when you enter. "Sorry, I've been trying to kick them out," he says to you while glaring at the other boys.
"But," Hash interjects, "he made the mistake of mentioning you were coming."
"And we wanted to meet Korean Hip Hop's upcoming star!" Leella finishes.
"Me?" you ask, a bit baffled. "I'm not-"
"What's with all the noise coming from this room? If you guys are gonna be so loud at least close th-"
"Y/N?"
"Hyoeun!" you exclaim, pulling the oldest Ambition artist into a hug as he enters the room.
"What are you doing here?" he asks, a smile on his face as he hugs you. "And why are you with these losers?" He eyes the boys behind your back in suspicion.
As you two release from the hug you reply, "Ash and I are a producer team on Show Me, so we've been working together the past few weeks.
"You're telling me you don't scour the internet for articles on me everyday?" you ask with fake hurt.
Hyoeun rolls his eyes with a scoff. "Oh, please. You hate being talked about. Whenever I even mention something I saw about you, you look like you want to throw up. Something about 'I don't like people knowing things about me that I didn't share with them.' Newsflash: you're a celebrity. People will spread everything they can about you."
You open your mouth to reply but Ash cuts you off. "You two know each other?" he asks, mildly confused.
"Oh yeah, we go way back," Hyoeun says with a smirk. He wraps an arm around your shoulder.
"We grew up together," you explain. "Our parents were friends, so we were basically forced to spend time with each other."
"Practically my little sister," Hyoeun says, shooting Ash a meaningful look. Ash hears the unspoken half of his sentence loud and clear, so if you hurt her you're dead.
-----
Round 3: 1 on 1 Battles
With the closing of another round, 52 rappers remain, and in this round, half of them will be eliminated. It’s the classic 1v1 showdown that can’t be missed in SMTM! Rappers will choose their opponents, going in order from highest to lowest fight money.
Who are you looking most forward to this round?
Saf: Definitely Lee Gunho. I even convinced Ash to give him more money in the last round.
Ash Island: Yeah, that was the only person she was willing to spend a lot of money on.
Saf: He was so good! When he first walked up for the 60 second rap, he didn’t look that impressive. However, once he started rapping I was really surprised. It almost seemed like words couldn’t contain his entire self, so he expressed it through music. And that’s what music is all about to me.
Ash Island: (smugly) I was the one who passed him in the first round.
Saf: Do you think that means he likes you then? Do you think he’ll pick our team later on?
Ash Island: Be careful. If you get too attached, you’re probably going to end up crying if he gets eliminated.
Saf: Funny of you to assume I don’t get attached to every person whose music I like.
-----
“Does Ash know you’re like almost creepily obsessed with his music?” Rohan asks you.
“I really hope not.”
-----
After you and Hyoeun left, the remaining Ambition boys sat down in Ash’s studio again.
Ash turned to the boys. “You guys didn’t think to give me a heads up on Hyoeun?”
“We thought you knew!” Leella defended. “Whenever Hyoeun actually shows up to parties they always hang out. Kinda hard not to notice.”
“Well, seeing as I generally try to avoid looking at Hyoeun when he’s not with you guys, I didn’t,” Ash said flatly.
He’d always felt a bit uncomfortable around the older male. The two were just fine when they were with the other guys, but they would never spend time together one on one. He just seemed so hard to approach, and Hyoeun definitely wasn’t going to be the one to reach out and alleviate the awkwardness.
Now that Hyoeun was sending light death threats his way before Ash had even done anything further than talk to you, Ash knew his relationship with Hyoeun wasn’t going to see improvement anytime soon.

When Ash Island is forced to participate as a producer for the latest season of Show Me the Money, he knows it won't be easy. But when his partner is you, a rising producer from H1GHR, maybe it won't be as bad as he thought.
Show Me the Money X Episode 2 – Round 1: Rapper Selection
Picking up from the previous episode, Round 1 auditions continue. After quite a few contestants, Ash Island still has yet to pass anyone to the next round.
You seemed to be very picky with your choice in rappers. What sort of criteria are you judging them on?
Ash Island: Well it’s not like I have a rubric or checklist or anything like that. But the first thing they need is confidence, because if you don’t think you’re good, why should anyone else? And second, they need to have the skills to back up that confidence. You have to show that you’re the real deal, not just some fake. Hip hop isn’t a place for insincerity, you need to be comfortable showing other people who you are.
Saf: Man... I think we all wish we could be as cool as you, Ash.
-----
"Dude, are you blushing?" Changmo puts his face to the screen in an attempt to inspect Ash's face, while Leella throws his head back in laughter.
Hash Swan looks up at Ash, the real one not the one on their screen, "Oh look, he's even redder in real life." This starts up even more laughter. If there ever were a moment Ash considered resigning from Ambition, it would be right now.
"Can you just hit play?" Ash mutters. Thankfully, the boys decide to have mercy on him, and the show continues.
-----
Round 2: 60 Second Rap Evaluation
And the competition continues! All of the rappers who passed the first round were asked to prepare a 60 second rap that they will perform in front of all the producers.
If the producers don't like them, they will hit the Fail button, otherwise their status remains Pass. A rapper needs only one Pass to make it through to the next round.
This season will be using a Fight Money system like from season 7. Each producing team is given a theoretical 30 million won. For every rapper they pass, they must give them a minimum of 100,000 won to a maximum of 5 million won.
The producing teams are all sat in front of a stage. Each team has their own two-person couch. Chatter can be heard throughout the room as the producers wait to begin.
"Did you find anyone good?" Saf asks Ash quietly. The intimacy of their conversation doesn't go unnoticed by Ash.
"Yeah, there was this one kid who was so good, we have to bring her to our team later on," Ash says.
Their quiet conversation continues until the show starts.
-----
"What do you think of him?" Saf leans toward Ash as she asks the question during one of the 60 second performances.
"He's alright, not that great," Ash says.
"Yeah, do you wanna hit the button then?"
"Sure," Ash says.
Ash Island: That kept happening. Our recording is probably a compilation of her asking my opinion when she didn't like someone, then making me hit the fail button.
Saf: I feel bad! Their music reflects who they are, and it's like saying I don't like who they are.
Ash Island: You're the one who brings it up first when you don't like someone! Anyway, that's the whole point of putting your music out there, so people can have an opinion on it. If they're brave enough to share their music, they should be strong enough to handle rejection. This is how they'll get better.
"Do you like her?" Saf asks once again about the current performer.
"I think she's mediocre, but we're not failing her unless you hit the button," Ash replies.
"But you don't like her either," Saf retorts.
"But you need to practice saying no to people. Is this why you do so many collabs? You say yes to everyone who asks?"
"But-"
"Clock's ticking down," Ash interrupts her. "Her rap is almost done."
Ash Island: I found Saf's weakness.
Saf: (scoffs) What is it?
Ash Island: The one thing she hates more than rejecting people: wasting money. If we pass someone, we have to give them at least 100,000 won, and she barely wanted to spend a lot on the good people. She definitely wouldn't wanna spend any on someone she doesn't like.
Saf: We never know who's going to come out next! What if we needed it for the next person?
Ash Island: It's fake money! Why are you thinking so hard about it?
Saf: Whatever.
In the end, she pressed the fail button for that girl.
-----
"You know he has a point," Rohan says to Saf.
"Shut up."

Hunting for Gems
season preview

When Ash Island is forced to participate as a producer for the latest season of Show Me the Money, he knows it won't be easy. But when his partner is you, a rising producer from H1GHR, maybe it won't be as bad as he thought.
2k words
As you stand before the door to the waiting room, heart thudding loudly in your chest, you think back to when the KIFF boys were in your studio eating cake a week ago.
“What am I supposed to do?” you slap Rohan’s arm vigorously as you panic. “How am I supposed to act around him?” The rest of the boys had already left, allowing you to freak out in relative privacy.
You’ve been an avid fan of Ash Island since his days on High School Rapper 2. Once he started releasing music, your infatuation with him only increased. When Jay informed you that you’d be working with him for the entire season of Show Me the Money, your brain immediately worked itself into a frenzy. On one hand, you were excited to meet someone whose music you loved. On the other, how were you expected to function properly next to him with the entire world watching through a camera?
“Okay, first thing you need to do,” Rohan starts, “is stop hitting me! You may be weak, but if you hit me enough it starts to sting okay? And second, just be normal? Act how you usually do.” He makes it sound so easy, as if you won’t die on the spot the moment the two of you make eye contact.
“That is under the assumption that I am able to think with him sitting next to me. And alright, let’s say I am actually capable of saying more than two words in his presence, what if he doesn’t like me? What if he thinks I’m weird or annoying?” You’ll be crushed if this person that you’ve admired for so long decides he doesnt like you.
“Then he’d be a good judge of character?” You hit Rohan even harder. “Ow! Relax, I was just kidding. Look, I’ve known the guy for a couple years now, and he has no right to call someone else weird. Plus, he’s one of the chillest guys I know. You’ll be fine. From what I’ve seen recently, the only time you need to be worried is when the cameras are on.”
“What do you mean?”
-----
While you stood outside the door, Ash is inside, staring nervously at the production crew setting up the cameras. Unlike you, he is not nervous about the two of you meeting. He’s worked with countless artists, featured on so many songs, he is used to interacting with people he didn’t know. What actually scares him is having to be a functioning human being in front of all these cameras.
He’s never done a such a big production like this, never seen so many cameras all pointed at him, capturing his every move. Thinking about all the eyes that will be watching him through that lens gives him anxiety. Normally, he’d be drinking right now to take off a bit of the edge. However, he doesn't think that would help with this cold bad boy image he is already starting to have. On top of being a jerk, the public will then think he was an alcoholic.
Just when he thinks he'll burst from nerves, you decide to walk through the door, a welcome distraction from all the thoughts running through his head.
-----
The first thing you see as you walk in is the production crew. All you are filming today are some short interviews to introduce the producer teams. They’ll be airing it as a teaser for the new season. You bow your head in greeting to the staff as you head to your seat. And that’s when you see him.
The two of you make eye contact, both looking up at the same time. And then you freeze; your brain short-circuits and for a second, all you can do is stare. Ash Island, the guy whose songs take up a good chunk of your playlist, is sitting there, right in front of you.
You break out of your stupor when you hear his voice. “Hey, what’s up?” he says casually. And you realize you’re being incredibly rude to someone who is older and a senior in the industry.
“Hello! I’m Saf. I’m a producer for H1GHR Music,” you introduce yourself officially.
He chuckles a bit. “Yeah, I know. We’ve seen each other at the H1GHR-Ambition parties.”
“Right,” you say nervously. And you guys had met before, but you didn’t think he’d remember. He was always across the room or on the opposite end of the table, so you two never really interacted. In fact, this is the first time you’ve heard his voice, and not through a song on your phone.
“So did you want to sit down?” he asks. You’ve just been standing in front of him for a while.
“Oh!” you immediately take a seat. Now what are you supposed to say? Thankfully, he decides to fill the silence.
“You're friends with Rohan right?” he asks. Not really who you’re thinking about at the moment, but you'll take it.
“Yeah, I am. We're in the same crew,” you explain. “Why, did he say something about me?” you ask, feigning nonchalance. If Rohan said anything remotely embarrassing about you to Ash Island, you were ready to kill him.
“Oh no, I just remembered him drunk-dialing me last night to wish me luck on the show.” You laughed, making a comment about how dumb Rohan was sometimes. And that’s how the rest of your conversation went until you started shooting, sharing dumb stories about your mutual friend.
-----
SHOW ME THE MONEY SEASON X
Team ASH ISLAND x SAF Q&A
The two are seated side-by-side in front of the camera. Ash Island is looking quite stiff and uncomfortable, while Saf has an easy smile on her face.
Please introduce yourselves.
After a glance at Ash Island, Saf begins her introduction with a bow.
Saf: Hello, everyone. My name is Saf, I’m a producer for H1GHR Music.
Following her lead, it seems Ash Island takes his first breath since the camera started rolling.
Ash Island: Hi, guys. I’m Ash Island from Ambition Musik.
Did you two know each other before the show?
Saf: Well, of course I don’t think there’s anyone interested in Korean hip hop right now that doesn’t know Ash Island. But we’ve also seen each other in passing at events and parties and such. This is my first time really talking to him though.
As she talks, Ash Island appears to loosen up just the slightest. He directs his gaze to Saf when he speaks.
Ash Island: [to Saf] You… can just call me Ash.
Saf looks at him in surprise, her cheeks just the slightest shade darker, undetectable to most.

“WHY DID THEY EDIT IT LIKE THAT?” Rohan’s obnoxious laughter in the background is only furthering your agitation.
“Come on,” Rohan lets out between spurts of laughter. “That had nothing to do with the editing. Don’t tell me that wasn’t exactly how it felt when he looked at you.”
Unable to refute his claim, all you say is “Whatever.”
“Did they have to put in the romantic background music and CGI cherry blossoms though?” you complain.
Ignoring your best friend’s following fit of laughter, you begrudgingly hit play once again.
-----
“Duuuuude I didn’t realize you were so smooth!”
“Our Bition Baby is all grown up!”
“You can just call me Ash,” Changmo repeats in a sickeningly sweet voice.
“What are you guys talking about?” Ash asks, only slightly annoyed that his labelmates had interrupted his studio time. He wasn’t making much progress today anyway.
“Did you not watch the Show Me previews last night?” Hash Swan asks.
“No, I thought I’d avoid the embarrassment of seeing myself on national TV,” Ash replies. He was there when it happened, he didn’t need reminders of how awkward he was on camera.
“Alright, you have to watch this,” Leellamarz says, pulling up the reposted video on Youtube.

You guys are the youngest producer team in the history of the show. Do you feel pressured by this fact?
Saf: [to Ash] Do you want me to answer this one?
He looks at her and nods wordlessly. She smiles at him in return before addressing the camera.
Saf: Of course, working next to such big names and artists can be quite intimidating. But I think as long as we put out work that we can be proud of, I will be satisfied.
Saf: But I would appreciate it if the viewers would look kindly upon us as it is our first time on this show. I’m kind of a wimp; I think I’d be pretty hurt if I saw we were receiving hate comments.
Saf’s smile indicates she’s only joking, and the production team can be heard laughing behind camera.
Ash: I doubt anyone in their right mind would send you hate.
Saf: Why not?
Ash: All you do is sit and smile and release music. What could anyone possibly say about you?
Saf: …I’ll take that as a compliment.
Ash: It was one.

“I hope you know that if you break her heart,” Changmo starts, “I’m petitioning to kick you out of the company. I am NOT risking losing an invite to AOMG-H1GHR parties because of you.”
Ash rolls his eyes. “Thanks for the vote of confidence, dude. Glad to know you have so much faith in me. But also, chill out. I haven’t even done anything yet.”
“Yet? So you are planning on making a move?” Hash Swan questions. Ash sighs. Why are these guys reading so much into everything he says?
“No, I am not making a move, I barely know her,” Ash refutes. “She’s just a producer that I will be working with for the next couple months.” That day was the first time he’d ever talked to you. There is no reason to get excited about anything just yet, even if he does think you have a nice smile.
“Come on, Ash. She’s not just a producer,” Leellamarz points out. Ash is a bit wary of where he’s going with this-
“She’s a very cute producer.” -and rightfully so. Ash really can’t catch a break with these guys. They all burst out laughing, and Changmo gives Leella a high-five.
“Whatever,” Ash mutters. “Why the sudden interest in my love life anyway?”
“Wow, you’re not even gonna try and deny that you think she’s cute?” Hash asks. This guy is way too observant.
“I have eyes. How am I supposed to not think she’s cute?” Ash says bluntly.
“You know, contrary to what you may believe, not everybody has to find her cute,” Changmo says, mostly just to tease him. “Maybe she’s just not my type,” he shrugs.
“Yeah, that’s because she’s actually nice,” Ash retorts. “And we all know that isn’t your type.”
“That’s never been your type either, Ash, so why the sudden change of heart?” Leella asks.
“Maybe I’m looking for a change of pace,” Ash says with a noncommittal shrug. This is all hypothetical anyway. It’s not like he’s planning on asking you out or anything. He just thinks you’re cute, there is no reason for the guys to make such a big deal out of it.
“Yeah, well be careful. You’re going to make some very scary people mad if you mess around with her,” Changmo warns.
“Please, the H1GHR guys are like literally the nicest guys on the planet. I think I’m safe,” Ash says.
“That’s not who I’d be worried about if I were you.”
