Hi! How are you doing? I wanted to get your opinion on another drama in the fandom after The Winchesters finale. All I get from it is facepalm. I don't remember reading it here or elsewhere, but it was saying that after the spn finale, we're in for a deliberate campaign to break the bond between J2 in the public eye. And they clearly succeeded. It's like many fans have gone crazy and can't stop saying for years that J2 were never friends or about friendship breakdown and betrayal. And this is despite the fact that J2 are still close and dear to each other. They still want to work together and will definitely restart spn one day. Not to mention them as a strong couple who have been through a lot. And I think this kind of drama is even good for them. J2 tinhat not much left and not as much attention and emphasis on them anymore. Even just j2 fans are hard to find. There are only individual aggressive fans of each of the J2 and crazy Hellers. At times I think it's even better that way. They can be together without worrying so much about damage control.

I’ve started and restarted this answer so many times, because I feel like it’s such a delicate topic but also something that definitely does need to be addressed.

And I thank you for taking the time to write it out so eloquently!

I guess I’ll start by saying that I absolutely have noticed the number of people jumping onto the anti-‘J2-togetherness’ train, to the point where I’ve been trying to figure out for a while now what factors could be contributing to it.

Mainly because the actual reality of the Js on a day-to-day basis does not match up with what’s been said (with what’s being said), and yes, there definitely have always been those who have projected their own discomforts/disappointments/opposing views etc. onto the Js. Of course we all know that, but you’re certainly right about the fact that it’s become much more prevalent in recent months (I kind of feel like it’s been happening ever since the sequel debacle, really).

And on that note, I do think the issues surrounding the sequel undeniably planted seeds of resentment/negative feelings in probably a pretty big percentage of at least the individuals who were once pro-J2 and who are now anti-J2, and I’m not about to pass judgment on anyone or try to claim that anyone’s feelings/opinions are wrong or bad, because that’s never been what I’m about here.

What I have always said about the prequel drama is essentially this-

The strength of the 15+ year relationship between Jared and Jensen allowed them to heal from all of that, and even in the midst of it, I never doubted they would…and they absolutely, 100% have.

That’s honestly what genuinely matters, at least as it pertains to our discussion about the closeness/trust/love between the two of them, and I guess I would just say…or I would hope…that anyone holding onto their own disappointments might at least be able to distinguish between their own feelings and how the Js have stated and shown they feel.

But again, to each their own.

The other element to mention, I think, is the glaringly obvious one, and something I’ve touched on a few times since the wrapping up of SPN.

It was always going to be really difficult for us, on the outside looking in, to no longer (for now, anyway) get to experience that amazingly personal and constant view of Jared and Jensen’s relationship to the degree we’d all become so accustomed to throughout the decade and a half of SPN, and I think some people lost sight of the fact that just because we’re not able to witness as much of their time together/hear about as much of their relationship/etc. doesn’t mean it isn’t still happening.

And yes, it’s common sense. But I think for some, probably those who weren’t as heavily invested in the first place (although that’s just speculation), the shift was misinterpreted as being linked to a decline in the Js intimacy instead of simply a decline in the amount of that intimacy we get to see.

As for a more formal ‘set-up’ of these rumors and speculations, that’s not something I’ve been privy to or heard anything about, although I’ll absolutely agree with you on the fact that whether there was any staging or simply just the natural progressions one would expect, the dimmed spotlight on the nature of Jared and Jensen’s relationship has certainly allowed them some more freedom and peace, which of course is a good thing.

And it’s not anything we didn’t all realize would happen, those of us who’ve been around for this for as long as we have been. We’ve been talking it over since the start of SPN’s final season.

Digging into these anti-J2 posts, I can tell you that what I personally found is that the vast majority of them, as has always been the case, are originating from hellers, with a small (although, yes, increased) percentage of them seemingly coming from previously pro-J2 folks.

In the end, I guess I’d really love to hear from others and get any additional opinions on this, so please, if you have something to add, let me know!

Edit: as far as J2 tinhats disappearing, I don’t think that’s actually necessarily the case. I know that I tend to vanish for sometimes quite long periods of time, but that’s always been the case, and I see the same group of us (not entirely, but the bulk of us) still wearing our hats and enjoying the Js here on Tumblr. 😊 So definitely hang in there, my friend!

I feel like it really WAS supposed to be a hiatus. They stepped away from the gaming channel and joint content bc Dan had a lot of projects he wanted to work on (the more serious content like big, the YouTube show, maybe even the solo tour) just to stretch his creative limbs and bc they needed to sort out the house/move, and uploading through all of that would be stressful. They were probably thinking 2-3 years tops. And then the world blew up and half of Dan's plans blew up with it

I feel like this return is GENUINE, like they've wanted to do it and just haven't been able to yet because Dan wasn't done with his stuff

i see that you have good points. it was very convenient to not have a gaming channel when they ended up living in a filming apartment with 0 space. but Dan constantly saying (through Phil sometimes) that he doesn't want to make that type of content anymore and doesn't want the gaming channel to return... it was very telling. only Phil was saying "maybe" because he was the only one actually wanting and needing it. that "maybe" was saved in case everything else went down. like a safety blanket that they always could pull out. which they did.

i understand Dan wanting a hiatus of sorts. he was burnt out. 2018 was a crazy year! it's just.. the vibes we started getting right after were very final. "Dan doesn't want it" was a final statement. and maybe he didn't want it because of other projects. he basically killed DanandPhil brand at some point, it was very apparent that he wanted to get out of that label. that he wanted a name outside a very successful duo they built throughout almost a decade. and it was fucking hard for him, you know. i understand that. the 1st project was ruined by youtube and covid. the company that he gave 10 years of his life let him down. it's a rough fucking start for a name building.

i'm simplifying a lot here, bear with me :))

i think the wad tour opened Dan's eyes a little bit. and i will take it as a win in the end of the day. it was starting very well and promising. the concept and 1st promo materials were well done. but then everything started wobbling and neither Dan nor his team was ready to deal with problems fast enough. and in contrary to how fuckups didn't really make a difference during ii NOW they made a difference. Dan couldn't make a name between 2019 and 2022, so he started going back and forth with his content. sometimes it wasn't clear who was the main target for videos, announcements and promos. i still don't know who initially was the target audience for his book. it can't be us! we know everything he wrote there. but marketing was so non-existent, it's scary how it could flop if he didn't have an audience based on DanandPhil™. his tour had somewhat of an audience also only because of the branding he was so determined to escape. although, there was a moment when he tried to advertise it for a wider audience, wasn't it? especially in the UK, where they had actual posters in the cities outside the venues. i remember having questions about why marketing shifted throughout the tour (while the script stayed the same! loser). i can't say that dystopia daily even had a target audience in mind rfbhfjekeeo

what i'm trying to say is, something changed in Dan's mind. there was a series of events that made him realise that coming back to dnpgames wasn't actually a bad idea. the European leg of his tour was the biggest mess i've ever seen. the fact that Dan explicitly threw shade on people he worked with only confirmed how bad things were. the search for a new management team, constant postponing of wad dvd, Phil's recycling content, and god knows what else – maybe it made him realise that a familiar content on a channel that everyone loves so much and will give views (and money) is what's best right now. new projects are always a risk. dnpgames isn't. and he still can work on something alongside. especially if he finally has new managers who will fight for his interests and property communicate with people they happened to work with. (allegedly. we don't know if he actually got new representatives).

if he actually had a 2-3 years plan (even 5 years plan, idc), the communicative language should have been different. but the only vibe i was getting from him right till yesterday was "i don't what to do what y'all are suggesting. period." and then he is talking about hope on twitter?! bro, as if it wasn't in your hands all this time 😭 i love him and i wish him all the best, and i'm rooting for his career more than for my own. but damn, does he not make it easy 😂

i’m fucking livid over the cancellation of ofmd3.

it doesn’t even make sense for them to cancel it. ofmd broke streaming records for HBO max. it was one of the top shows of 2023 despite coming out in october. there was official merchandise and a huge advertising campaign (which i remember VERY vividly because i was sick before it came out and i was passed out on the couch for a solid week, waking up several times a day to “no, we’re on a break”).

it’s obvious what’s happening. this is what happens when writers don’t queerbait; the studios do it. they love our money and viewership, but they hate US as people. david jenkins and the rest of the team behind ofmd gave us an unashamedly queer story, and now that we’ve lined HBO’s pockets, it’s getting kicked to the curb.

the ending of season two was a “just in case” ending, which was appreciated, but i feel like everyone thought it was a given for there to be a season three. sure, season two wasn’t as good as the first one, but most of that was a pacing issue that wouldn’t have been there if HBO Max didn’t cut the budget and season length. already looks pretty sabotagey to me. not to be tinhatting about this, but that’s hella fuckin suspicious. trying to tank the ratings so they’d have an excuse to cancel the show.

but after years of sherlock levels of queerbait, we were fine with it. ofmd2 was good even with all the cuts and restrictions. of course it could’ve been better, but we all know why it wasn’t, and now we all know why we won’t have an ending.

i was scared for the finale to come out. i thought they were gonna massacre half the characters, rocky horror style. a whole “this is what happens when you’re queer” hayes code era twist. but of course that didn’t happen, the writers love us and their show too much for that. i always have seen that people like us don’t get happy endings, but for a moment, we did. and then we didn’t.

doesn’t that make you viscerally ill? we were given a show that treats queerness as a given, not as some tragic odd-one-out character development thing, depicts relationship dynamics we never thought we’d see on tv, and celebrates all of us. we were profited off of, which is okay as long as that profit is going toward the people who made this for us, and a lot of it did. then, the executives who platformed the show to get into our untapped consumer market rip it all away. they have our stats and subscription, that’s all they wanted.

the thing is, they could’ve had more. they could’ve just let us be and profited even further off of a third season, but something about us is just too much for them. it’s sick. it’s bigoted. it’s infuriating.

this keeps happening. remember when I’m Not Okay With This got canceled on a cliffhanger? and for what? the show got great viewership, an active fanbase, and people willing to stay subscribed to netflix for another season. it wasn’t even corporate greed of not wanting to cough up the production costs. they would’ve made a whole bunch of money if it was renewed. their bigotry was stronger than their corporate greed.

they hate us that much. enough to manufacture a tragic ending. enough to not rake in more profits just to get us off of their roster. i may be a bit dramatic about this but god DAMN it sure does feel intentional.

I feel like I've said this already but they just didn't make Dean the way fanfic authors do—and in the context of destiel, it's him trying to work through the anger, it's finding peace within himself and killing the storm always raging in his veins, it's reciprocating Cas' soft touch outside of him dying on Dean. It is Cas readily forgiving most of Dean's mistakes and Dean doing his damnedest to be worthy anyways. Because listen.

I am one half a Deangirl I will gladly spend my last days tinhatting and nerding out about the nuances of his character—but come on, he has crimes that should not have been skimmed over (ahem S9 Steve arc ahem S15 divorce arc ahem Mary's death ahem) that I know within my soul he would feel absolutely shitty about, post Cas confession. He may have done everything for love but he was also an asshole for a lot of it and they should ‼️ be‼️ able‼️ to‼️ work on that‼️‼️‼️‼️

And I'm not talking about Dean coddling Cas or whatever, I'm talking about Dean working past his issues to let himself have soft things and fully connect with someone. Healthy communication, healthy relationships, health coping mechanisms—that shivering wet cat of a man deserved therapy (news flash: they all did) and that kind of healing.

And that's something fanfic authors just understand better than the big name execs or whoever deemed it climactic to end Dean's story by dying.

I feel like the real problem with the shourtney isn't the weirdo (affectionate) tumblr side but stuff like tiktok. Bc with almost every other ship it is only weirdo tumblr kind of people that treat it as ficition but with shourtney there are so many normies that are doing truther shit.

Tiktok is so so so so bad. There is a tiktok with half million views analyzing courtney and shayne selfies and account of their family to "prove" that they are a couple.

They scare me.

I am not part of either group but if you a weirdo tumblr shourtney shipper just know that when people complain about shourtney "shippers" they are talking about the second group of people mostly.

okay so to start off - totally agree with you that it's not really tumblr that's the problem. i will say i don't go into the sh/ourtney tag (bc. not my monkeys not my circus) but at least as far as the mutuals i have that do ship sh/ourtney, they're super chill about it! as we do, they treat the dynamic as purely fiction, they don't ya know. harass anyone.

i (and i say this thankfully) am not REALLY on smoshtok. i get the occasional smosh men or angela thirst edits and that is About it. but i will say this: you all know i am totally against tinhatting in all senses of the word. i try to stay as far away from those sides of every social media platform. so i'm with you, that shit is nasty.

but even after all that - i saw that tiktok. multiple friends sent me that tiktok. i didn't like it or anything or engage with it on purpose but i saw it. and then i found out later that they were both tagged in it, as was the official smosh account. my brother in christ i truly wish i'd never seen it. i think its one thing to look at a picture and be like 'omg they're so cute here' but another thing to compile it as evidence and throw it back in their faces. at that point, it feels like forcibly outing an aspect of their life that they clearly either do not want to or cannot discuss. they are still people with a right to privacy. rpf is just that - fiction. this is something different and i hope they one day have the clarity to see that.

tbh i really appreciate your input; you worded it much better than i did!! this is what i was talking about when i said that this epidemic isn't a huge thing here on tumblr, and i think a lot of that is in part bc the cast isn't here for us to interact with. the official smosh blog has been dead for years and as far as i know (?) none of the cast uses tumblr anymore. i was thinking more of the instagram, tiktok, and some twitter fans. (twitter is a mixed bag though and i won't get into that here. ever.) 9 times out of 10 i am Not talking about tumblr fans when i critique shipping at large. (that is to say not always. we can always work on ourselves and grow as a community. i, myself, am always learning and growing.)

anyway! i wanted to publish this ask, because i think it's very succinct and touches on a subject that i think was very valuable to this discussion (re: tinhatting). this ask is totally fine and did not cross a line in any way and i genuinely appreciate the thought you put into sending it!! that being said - this is probably the last ask i will publish on the subject. though i adore you all and i want you to feel free to speak your piece, frankly, i would also like to maintain my peace knnfnfk i do think that these discussions are important and worthwhile but that being said. i am just one lil guy.

Idk, I feel like RPF is more respectful when the person is dead like everyone's been dead for years or centuries, it's fine.

a) There's plenty of fiction out there now about real people who are not dead, actually - just off the top of my head, The Crown, House of Gucci, and I, Tonya are pretty big-deal recent works of fiction that use living people as characters, and none of them got any significant backlash from the apparently more-than-half of Tumblr that thinks it's immoral to write fiction about real people.

b) TBH, I've said nothing about respectfulness, because I don't think RPF is that respectful! But lots of what fandom does is not respectful. Fandom turns lusting for a celebrity into a public activity. People hold actors/musicians to very high standards and then excoriate them when they fail. It's all too common for actors' SOs, especially male actors' wives, to be talked about nastily by fandom. And then there's the tinhatting of people like the SPN guys and the leads from Outlander. A lot of this could be considered even less respectful than quite a lot of RPF out there. A desire to be respectful can definitely be a guide to which activities you personally choose to engage in, but none of these others seem to get the same level of excoriation as RPF.

Cait should have a stronger word for shippers like this one who snooped the event in London looking for her. This was a private event for Sinéad not a red carpet show. Cait thanked @anniemacmanus and her friend @WeeMissBea for the invite but this stupid shipper saw a couple of general photos and because she didn't see Cait among all the attendees, assumes she didn't go but sent her "assistant". Cait posted thanks for being there, but this crazy took it as a trick to fool her and her cohorts, because in reality she's over the pond with Rolando. Karma is real though and she found a photo of a guy who looks like Tony. As for Cait, she dyed her hair blonde for The Cut which makes it harder to spot. Sucks to be this shipper! 🤦

Last Thursday evening, The London Irish Centre organized a two-hour celebration of Sinéad O'Connor's life and legacy, which was attended by C, if we trust both her carefully worded post and her stans' fawning all over Twitter.

For an event of such amplitude it got fully booked in less than six hours from its announcement, there is surprisingly little available content on socials. Bear in mind I even did check their IG.

C is nowhere to be seen, either on stage or in attendance and I highly doubt they wouldn't have included her somehow. And I really paid attention, looked and ogled and took off my glasses and almost pulled my laptop screen near the tip of my nose. To no avail.

On such short notice, the Embassy/Centre would include anyone of note available and in attendance, by the way: I know very well how it's done. These happen on the regular, in my world, and I am often asked to help. LOL.

However, in all fairness, I also spotted this (sorry for the very crude/non-existent editing skills and the very ugly red arrow: it's almost half past four in the morning, here):

It’s hard to have an opinion when there’s no picture of her. One thing is sure they know how to play fans it reminds me when she was in Houston? With Maryl and said her husband was in the crowd somewhere but no picture again… easy to say thing they’re good at that too good. Only my opinion after being for awhile.

The most annoying part to me about people ignoring not only what you're saying, but Jensen and the others... This fandom 'joked' for MONTHS about his silence because he was mad. Now that there is undeniable proof that was true, half of them are ignoring are pretending they didn't see it. Outside of when asked by others a question that man didn't talk about the series until The Winchesters was announced but again people ignore it.

You want the truth? The same reason people are unstable as fuck in what they do on things like that is the same reason I catch so much horse shit, all around.

Very few people in this fandom are genuine. In what they say, believe. Some think they're genuine, many don't care to bother. The same person that'll say Misha was Teh Debil for running back in the closet or whatever will turn around like 2 days later and wail BUT WHAT IF WE DON'T GET MISHA GREETS. Logic source: Some shit they made in their own head that makes ZERO sense.

A lot of it has to do with trying to moralize fandom for control, rather than moralize themselves for honesty. But if they can, they turn everything into a perceived spin of righteousness. This goes as deep as even the j2 tinhats, where they've built themselves worlds where they can disregard anything they don't like as "PR" under the imagination of Being True Fans That Know The Truth. It positions them morally above other fans (due to delusion) and warrants excessive, often attention seeking behaviors.

The average panic-- whatever the chicken little bullshit of the day is-- ratings, cancellations, plots, who will or won't show up, who is or isn't satan, the Horrific What If of the day--is about giving the person themselves attention, rather than if that person critically inspected that belief or has any meaningful, stable, or continuous morals guiding it.

Then you get the congoers that forget they're just consumers because they've earned recognition. They forget this and start taking up all the air in the M&G room, which annoys other people, who then ask HOW those people get THOSE experiences, They Must Be Special. Begrudgingly. Rather than them just being overconfident while others are shy, and sucking all the air out of the room.

Many of them KNOW they're twisting or warping takes, many of them KNOW they are overglorifying their placement in things. Many of them hide behind civility culture games. Very few have confidence in what they say, as much as twist things they hear to try to convince THEMSELVES of something.

So with all of that, I'm blunt as fuck, I'm efficient as fuck, I've always managed to run circles around this exact same group of numpties since day one, they've gotten saltier and banded together into groups of failed numpties. It isn't even about being right anymore to them, it's about Trying To Make Me Wrong. Or leave. Or whatever. HOW COULD AARON HAVE POSSIBLY KNOWN ALL THIS EVEN BETTER THAN JARED THE WHOLE TIME THATS IMPORRRRSIBLE!!!! No, it's fuckin not.

But they all lie and exaggerate and jump moral bars all the time. In fact look at how many failboats those big ITK people had in years past, WHY they're so angry. They've always exaggerated what they've known so they HAVE to project I'm doing the same, because they literally *do not understand* that *they can not pay pass to what I do.*

But it's that. So people that formerly saw SexySilence FUNNY, are suddenly like. Nono, protecting my viewpoints, both my victim mindset, my lack of culpability in being a dick to creatives, etc--protecting this ego and denying it is more important right now.

Flip, flop, flip, flop.

It's no one side. It's that this fandom is infested with people with attention seeking personalities and, frankly, other cluster B traits. And sure those can be managed, but they don't. They don't manage. They just get into a Cluster of Cluster B and lob their shit at everyone.

Doesn't matter to them how True something is, really. They think if they say it enough, it'll make it true. In their heads, seems to be what I'm doing--I talk, something comes true. But that's because, you know, I've actually spoken with these creatives outside of transactional relationships and have paid attention and listened for years. So yeah, I talk, something comes true. You can't just. Replicate that off of pure stubborn bullshit. You can't just Project your headcanon of the universe into reality.

Consumers found a property full of other entitled consumers building psychosocial bubbles of nonreality in the internet where everyone patted them on the head and told them it was as okay to get as hysterical and ridiculous and embarassing as they want Cuz Feelings. Then they just. Assume everyone else is being as fake.

So yeah. All you're seeing is the shit I've been telling the genuine people that WANT to listen and WANT the truth for years: the people that often made the biggest hysterical noises over the years, or even are right now, don't even care about the actual result of the hysterics, they just care about the attention they get in the time between.

I saw a weird comment made on one of Anson's posts where Gen called Shelby a babe and Anson said "✂️ 🤣" and Shelby said "it never stops 🤦‍♀️ 🤣" or something like that. Is it possible she's not straight but is bi or even a closet lesbian?

I want to be careful how I say this because I don’t think that assuming sexuality based on clothing choice is fair. And I’m not sure how that shower video or flaunting supposed sex with her husband would suggest anything other than heterosexuality.

Nevertheless, her sexuality has been debated for some time in certain circles. (The Campbell Ritchie AKA “Soup” Era is long gone, but not forgotten.)

What you’re describing is someone who is trying very, very hard to cosplay a happy het marriage. Almost like there’s something in it for her…but there are some cracks showing when you look for them. And with that, you’re so close to Tinhat Territory, but I’m not sure if that’s where you want to be.

Or the fact that the espada were even drinking the tea even though they're arrancars (arrancars are not supposed to eat nor drink, right? Like it doesn't make any sense or does it?)?

Having learned a lot about Hueco Mundo today, tbh I’m more curious about where the heck Aizen got the tea for his tea. I’m now imagining him as a tinhat prepper who, for the last century, has been slowly stockpiling luxury goods from the Seireitei in his Hueco Mundo bunker. He's the ultimate doomsday prepper, because he’s both the prepper and the doomsday.

(The false sky over Las Noches is the first half of a terraforming project, because high-quality tea has a shelf-life and regrettably Aizen has become accustomed to this embodied vice. But plants need sunlight, not the illusion of it. Future historians of the Winter War period will boldly trace Aizen’s defeat back to this fact.)

Anyway, about this tea party and the origins of its water! I feel like there are a few key avenues for speculation--and these are speculations--that arise here:

What is Hueco Mundo's environment like?

What life can this environment sustain, and how does it persist?

Where is the water?

Why is the water important?

What's with the tea party?

1. What is Hueco Mundo's environment like?

What is Hueco Mundo really? It’s a space between the Living World and Soul Society, which Ichigo admits he initially imagined as a dead world. But he immediately reverses this opinion once he sees this cute lil’ guy:

Though they are often maligned as empty wastelands, deserts are on Earth can be quite biodiverse. This isn’t to say deserts in Hueco Mundo have to be the same, given that Hollows are, well, hollow. Emptiness incarnate. But I love the possibility that Hueco Mundo bucks the narrative, and love even more that Ichigo is immediately on board with this. What does he care what the narrative says these things are supposed to be—shinigami do this, Hollows are innately that, blah blah.

Of course, at first blush, Hueco Mundo does seem a bit static, environmentally. It’s always nighttime, which suggests the temperature stays pretty much the same, and photosynthetic life would be a rough life. It doesn’t even have crepuscular flora, because all the plants are rocks:

Hueco Mundo apparently does have lunar phases (which are opposite those in the Living World, according to the Bleach Wiki), though truth be told I’m not sure what lunar phases get them--besides a calendar and the potential for a vibrant Arrancar astrology culture. I entertained the idea that Hueco Mundo’s moon(s?) might pull Hueco Mundo’s sands like ocean tides, but apparently tidal forces strong enough to make sand act like water would also be powerful enough to simply tear the planet apart.

ON THE OTHER HAND, that’s assuming Living World physics. I feel like Hueco Mundo would be entirely capable of persisting under a force that, mathematically, should rip it apart. (Maybe that’s part of why it’s so much more reishi-dense than the other realms?!) That sounds absolutely on brand for the Arrancar and definitely sounds like something that would stand out to Aizen as prime headquarters material as he browsed Zillow.

2. What life can this environment sustain, and how does it persist?

I think even if Hueco Mundo doesn’t get to be cool and have sand tides, the shapes of its dunes suggest that it does have winds. Without plant life, its sands have no anchors and are therefore free to move quite far. Random Hollow bacteria in one part of Hueco Mundo could easily start an independently mutating colony in some other part. The miracle of life. 😊

Imagining Hueco Mundo as a dead place also assumes a particular definition of what life is. The Living World is where living things live. But here we are, in an entire realm with other types of beings that are clearly quite animate. And why would that stop at sapient or sentient life? Are we going to obey DESCARTES ("I think, therefore I am") in Hueco Mundo??? Why??

In Animacies, for instance, cultural theorist Mel Y. Chen "examine[s] how matter that is considered insensate, immobile, or deathly animates cultural lives. Toward that end, Chen investigates the blurry division between the living and the dead, or that which is beyond the human or animal." Especially in a place like Hueco Mundo, who are we to assume the rocks have no animacy of their own? (What is Hueco Mundo if not deeply existential space lol. Just ask Ulquiorra.)

Setting aside life's great existential questions, though, how would life persist here? Because I think this is important to think about before we get to why water would be a vital part of that persistence.

From a purely biological standpoint, ignoring all spiritual/metaphorical components of Hollows and their hunger, there is not a lot of food in Hueco Mundo. It would behoove Hollows to be small. That way they wouldn’t need to expend gratuitous amounts of energy to simply exist. But most of the Hollows we see are freaking huge so, LOL. Maybe they are large because only the smart ones are smart enough to not expend gratuitous amounts of energy being large. Regardless, whether they are large or small-but-very powerful Arrancar, I imagine that their lifestyles are a lot like lions and other large predators: A whole lot of lying around (trickle-charging on ambient reishi), punctuated by very brief, high-energy hunting behaviors. I feel like this tracks with the way the Winter War and the assault on Hueco Mundo function in general. When we think of human war, these tend to be wars of attrition. They last forever and are often won or lost in places other than the literal battlefield. The Winter War lasts like, what, a couple hours? The Espada all go in expecting a punctuation and all the shinigami do too, because they’re not all that different, with their bankai and their 1v1 close-combat fighting and whatnot.

I also wonder if the more outwardly animalistic features of the Arrancar has something to do with the nature of Hueco Mundo, in addition to Hollows just innately being bestial for metaphysical reasons. You lose heat through non-glabrous skin, and if you live in a desert of endless night it would be nice to be hairy. Heat is energy and if you want to be energy-efficient because food is at a premium, you can’t be losing it willy-nilly!

But this ask is about TEA, where Aizen got the water for TEA and why the Arrancar are drinking TEA!

3. Where is the water?

We only see clear skies in Hueco Mundo, but just as it rains in Earth deserts, it could well rain in Hueco Mundo, too. Quick, erratic storms that you can see the entirety of in the distance, your view unobstructed. Given that there is no vegetation, these sudden storms could cause flash floods. If they don’t drown you, it might make it easier to set up water capture in areas prone to flooding. (On the other hand, given how easily the dunes could shift in Hueco Mundo, maybe trying to do this would just be annoying.)

There are many forms of water-capture in arid climates that rely on capturing condensation. It’s easier to collect condensation when there are plants around, but many civilizations have done it with rocks, too. And since it’s always nighttime (and, since Ishida says mirages are impossible in Hueco Mundo, I assume that means it’s cold), there’s probably a dew point out there that Hueco Mundo could hit.

Personally, I think the most effective form of water capture in Hueco Mundo is probably the Forest of Menos, which I learned today is 1) underground, and 2) a petrified forest. It is rocks.

Given that it’s underground and cave-like, the potential for condensation would be at a premium. That’s probably why there are so many Menos there, too. Water is life! Or at least, water is reishi.

4. Why is the water important?

Thanks to Ishida, one of the things we canonically know about Hueco Mundo is that its atmosphere is more reishi-dense than that of the Living World—but also more reishi-dense than Soul Society, too. If everything in Soul Society is reishi at the end of the day, I’m willing to assume that everything in Hueco Mundo is also reishi. Let’s roll with that.

Ishida guesses that Hueco Mundo's atmosphere might be reishi-dense enough that small, weak Hollows can persist on ambient reishi:

We also know that souls need (or enjoy?) water—to the extent that it’s a commercial item:

If RenRuki et al can steal water, then it must have value to Joe Soul. I mean, the fine and upstanding citizens of Inuzuri probably don’t take the time to harvest all this water on the off-chance some shinigami hoofs it out to the 78th. Maybe souls without spiritual power use it to stay supple. (As they say, Reishi don’t raisin!)

My point is, water is reishi, and if you had to, you could probably subsist on water alone for a fair amount of time. Shinigami usually eat food to replenish their reiryoku, but I feel like that’s because it’s more reishi-dense than water, which is more reishi-dense than air:

Would a Hollow prefer to eat human souls? Probably. But hey, maybe sometimes they just eat rocks. Metabolizing rocks seems hard, though, so maybe the water is the most convenient after all. Whether the Arrancar actually need to eat or drinks themselves, idk, but there’s some precedent for memory of this need, and Aizen seems to have brought his own cultural expectations about these things.

5. What's with the tea party?

After we know where the water was from and why the Arrancar would benefit from drinking it, why did Aizen host this soiree in the first place? With tea?

Tea is a colonial good that Aizen has brought to this desert to demonstrate the elevated culture he aims to bring to this place, wedding his vision to their resources in order to surpass the fatherland. I mean, the guy ~made a castle~ with a ~fake daylight sky~ in a place that explicitly is meant to be empty space under an endless night. Of course he brought tea.

Tea functions as a gesture of both hospitality and control. Through this tea party, Aizen insinuates that he will allow the Espada ("his" Espada) light refreshments, but he has not yet allowed them to “eat.”

Emphasizing this fact is the whole point of the meeting, after all. We see what happens when Grimmjow fails to behave accordingly:

Aizen brings Grimmjow to his knees with a glance (and, one assumes, the pressure of a fuckton of reiatsu).

If Chapter 245 is Aizen’s equivalent to Scar’s "Be Prepared" number in The Lion King:

So, I just watched the first episode of Season 4 with my family, and the characterization just feels really off. Like, John cheating could maybe make some sense if you twisted it the right way, but him yelling at Sherlock?? Absolutely uncalled for.

Also, Mary was also out of character? Like she was almost too in love with John?

UGGGGHHHH TELL ME ABOUT IT. S4 is SO fucky and it's SO frustrating. Nothing about it feels right, and it constantly feels like Mofftiss gave no shits about it anymore. I feel bad for literally almost everyone else because they all did the best with what they had to work with, but S4 just feels like Mofftiss was annoyed the fandom "figured out" the endgame and instead went with non-sensical twists that were dumb. It shouldn't have happened at all.

They ruined Mary who was being built up to be a kickass villain. They ruined the budding relationship between Molly and Lestrade. On that same note, they made Lestrade this weird dumb-fuck and Molly reverted back to ASiP Molly. They dumbified John and Mycroft (why Gatiss fucked up his own character is beyond me). They introduced a stupid baby that was only there for filler. They introduced a weird magical unknown sister. They made Sherlock stupid as fuck, and Mary suddenly more clever than everyone else. Every actor is half-assing the script because they know it's shit. The whole season has a tonne of inconsistencies and fuckery.

I have my own VERY salty theories about what really was going on in real life, but I'll keep that to myself... the TINHAT part of me believes it was intentional given the VERY HARD TO MISS fourth wall breaks and in turn I believe it's actually an Unreliable Narrator situation, and it's John's Alibi that John or Sherlock wrote on their blog is actually what we're watching and not the true events of the show. Especially given how everyone pretends John doesn't have a blog in T6T, which is really bizarre, it FEELS very fake.

Check out my "something's fucky" tag for some more interesting shit happening in S4. But yeah, Just... S4 should have been great. The only way it could redeem itself at this point is if S5 (if it ever happens) is what most of us are hoping it to be: confirming S4 was fake, and S5 is really what happened during the events of S4 (the "Twin Series Theory").
