I think the reason why the early relationships and interactions Damian had with people who weren't Batman and co/a lot of his friends are good and fun for me is because they were not afraid of biting back as well as not look down on him? they still treat him like equal

I can't explain that well but Damian's early interactions with batman co wasn't pleasant because they bite back BUT they're all doing it out of resentment/judgement and something personal, even saw him as something of a lost cause

the people who he interacted with that weren't batman co knew he was an assshole and a brat but never really held it against him, some were willing to see him as something more and thought of him as someone capable

(I'm including steph as she's one of the interactions that went well and enjoyable)

ofc that is not to say it's only Batman co who beefed with him cause a lot of people definitely disliked him (he was a jerk, mostly), and not to say the batfam are evil and abusive and they fought 24/7 or whatever

TL;DR: batman and family/people who associated with them are more likely to form a biased opinion on Damian in contrast to someone who just knew him

Making that reading guide has got me thinking of the ideal place I'd like to see Talia occupy in the DC Universe, which is a businesswoman/fixer/second in command to whichever villains require her services, who none of the heroes trust even though ones like Batman know that she's probably working on her own agenda to take the villains down using their own resources. Utterly unpredictable to the heroes, predictable to the villains right up until they're left at rock bottom with the vague notion that she may have had something to do with it. No solid proof of course, because above all else Talia is competent at this sort of dirty work. If she takes you down, you probably had it coming by letting the cracks in your villainous organization show. She keeps getting hired because game recognizes game.

The exception to all of this is Damian. He can always tell if she's acting the part or not thanks to a very simple routine.

Damian: Hello Mother. This vat of chemicals seems like it's going to be used for evil purposes.

Talia: That is what Vandal Savage wants to use it for, yes. And it's my job to make sure that happens.

Damian: And if I were to throw myself into it, as protest against such an evil act?

Talia: Damian Thomas Hafid Wayne don't you dare take one more step towards that vat!

Damian, dangling over the vat of toxic chemicals: Playing the long game, not brainwashed and evil. Good to know.
