“Is the Berserk 2016 animé really as bad as they say?”
Now, I was totally unfamiliar with any of the story beyond The Golden Age arc so this was my first exposure to new Berserk territory. I just want to make sure you know that before we press on.
Back when I did my piece on the infamous EX-ARM, what was wrong with it was so extremely obvious and thus, I barely had anything interesting or pertinent to say about it. It was just an incredibly boring, ill thought-out, ugly mess of a televesion product. The 2016 iteration of Berserk is different though and probably the only thing that they share in common is that they both heavily incorporate 3D animation. The reason I bring it up though is that I’ve been debating which is worse because I’ve not been exposed to any show that is as poor as both of them. Before I get into what I hated about this series, I’ll start off with a handful of small pros about the Berserk of 2016.
The story is obviously very compelling because of the late Kentaro Miura’s source material and the world that it paints is accurately horrid - even though it doesn’t really look as much - so you’re immersed in the horror on a conceptual level. I know it does sound like I’m giving the animé points for not failing at something but they easily could’ve messed that up when you think that EX-ARM struggles to portray the world at all or communicate the story. Think of that as a disguised insult that I can only compare a Berserk property to something like that but honestly, I’ve not seen a lot of work that is as bad at doing what you think might be simple as this animé so I’m not left with a lot of contemporaries.
The first of few times where I ever felt something other than disgust or contempt for the series was whenever the new villain was on screen. Lord Mozgus is so superbly evil and so intensely unlikeable that I have to admire the way they portrayed him here. You have to remember that i’ve never been exposed to the manga so this is all I have to go on. The animé has to be given it’s props for portraying a good villain because none of the other characters have really gotten on my good side as of yet apart from Rickert who’s motivations are easily relatable. You understand what Rickert is all about immediately when Guts returns back to the house. Well done.
That’s the end of the good stuff.
The first five episodes are particularly awful - although it does pick up slightly towards the end - everything that is bad about the show is seen plain as day in those first few glances. The most egregious factor of them all is the sound design which is an issue so glaring that I have to get it out of the way first. Now clearly, I can’t play you anything through this article to give you an example of what I’m talking about so you just have to take my word for it. I’m not even an expert on sound either but Guts’ sword sounds like someone banging a lead pipe as hard as they can on a boat in the middle of nowhere. That sound plays every time as well, even when Guts is forcing his sword through a creature’s fat eyeball, it sounds like someone doing bad plumbing. The sounds of the monsters and the demons is far from convincing and a lot of stuff sounds recycled. I know recycling sounds is commonplace but it’s always bad when you are able to notice it so easily as in here.
The music is also extremely grating and it sounds like it’s made by someone who has no idea what they’re doing. I can’t imagine what sort of thing that this music would actually suit to begin with. For some reason, they continue to opt for obnoxiously high, shrieking violin sounds in moments that don’t even fit the horror violin sound, never mind the violin actually fitting anything at all. Sometimes, it would just be Guts talking to himself and you would find yourself distracted by loud notes that suggest absolutely nothing at all about the scene.
I don’t really think the power metal in the opening theme is particularly very Berserk either.
I have a great deal of hate for the dialogue in this. It has come to my attention that Guts is more snarky and snappy in the manga after The Eclipse but it isn’t really this bad. His James Bond/Leon Kennedy punny quips in this are absolutely unbearable and makes me want to switch it off. They are weirdly focused on trying to maximise some kind of comedy value that it has no right in having whilst fighting to uphold this dark fantasy world and it just does not work. I find Guts’ personality loathsome. I find Puck to be irritating, over-included and a pain-stakingly transparent pandering opportunity for merchandise and commercialization. Isidro is exactly the kind of character that I simply do not want and I’ll say no more about that. All the little pauses in between the dialogue to suggest that the makers of this show have such exquisite comic timing is just painful. I could go on and on about this but it’s actually making me angry writing about it.
All the while I spent watching this, I was always thinking that it would be so much better if it was just made like a traditional 2D animé. The visuals are wickedly bad at points and there are some scenes where you have absolutely no idea what is even going on with the combination of 3D models, the weird pencil-shading effect that appears sometimes and the frame rate compensation. Every so often, you’ll see a bit of animation in shadows on characters where you’ll see fake manga shading that is supposed to be like a charming homage to the manga itself but instead, it comes off as annoying and pretentious. In “fast-paced” fighting scenes, the animation is beyond disorientating because the 3D animation can only render so fast that it seems to tank the FPS and that is just a problem you should not have to deal with when watching a television show
I’m not the type to have regular pops at Funimation for their dubs because I am generally largely indifferent about the shows they’ve happened to have dubbed. I also don’t know if it’s really their fault directly that the dub for this was so bad. The script isn’t exactly stupendous either and I don’t think I’ve known such bad expository dialogue when the plot and the themes of the story are so obvious to the viewer. Constantly, a characters’ internal monologue will interject and pause the tension in the scene to overtly explain the thing that is happening and stuff like that just drives me up the wall. Bad voice-acting and bad animation is one thing but bad dialogue can absolutely kill a product in my eyes.
To be fair to the show, it did actually get quite good towards the end of the series but ultimately the quality is capped by all the problems that I’ve just mentioned. The pacing of the massive fight scene at the end between Mozgus and Guts is compromised by the awkward 3D animation and the sound design making the moments unintelligible. The constant comeback on the comic relief characters of Puck and Isidro pissed me off without fail every time they were on screen. Why they thought a story like Berserk needs a comic relief aspect anyway is beyond me. It’s obvious to me that the producers of this show thought they could make bank on the pairing but even if you like that sort of thing, you have to agree that all the chatter is unnecessary in a beast like Berserk. If you liked Ryuji Sakamato and Morgana in Persona 5, i’d love to know what you thought of them in this. I would love to know your thoughts and feelings on Puck and Isidro in this particular animé - not the manga.
Anyway, I’m just about done talking about this because I need to steam off. I might do a follow-up post on the second series of Berserk from this studio but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Venus Mecha and her pilots by mairithetree
Here some designs I’ve worked on in the past months :o <3 I wanted to try to design my own mecha but it’s very hard to create mechanical parts and all that. I really want to make a final version of this but with colors in the future :3 For the Venus mecha, I was inspired by the painting La nascita di Venere by Botticelli, medieval armors and Venus figurines (Upper Palaeolithic statuettes).
The pilots on the top pilot the mecha in two different zones : the first one pilots inside the head and the other one at the level of the belly. It’s based on the researches about enteric nervous system also called the second brain :3 So each pilot has to control one “brain” of the mecha so it can be functionnal. If one of the brains derail, the mecha is impossible to control.
On a side note, the first time I imagined this mecha was because I listened to the song Venus by Lady Gaga XD
Have a good night, folks <3

Okay so apparently one way they handle the very fun but potentially "childhood-destroying" vore in the 'Trolls de Troy' cartoon adaptation in a, let's say, more family friendly way, is that they make a point to have human characters appear in multiple epsiodes even though they usually get eaten whenever we meet them.
So several not necessarily mutually exclusive possibilities:
a) Maybe it's that they were just happy having a couple of stock characters and don't expect the audience to really pay attention to continuity.
b) The repeatedly shown humans have somehow mastered the skill of escaping from troll stomachs, not sure I wanna learn how.
c) My favorite: Multiverse theory. As in every cartoon that does things like kill off its main cast for a quick joke in every other episode, I'd say it's all canon, but the show is set in multiple alternate timelines. So you can eat a guy in one episode and have the next episode set in an alternate timeline where he hasn't been eaten (yet).
