that pnf poll you reblogged the other day…i haven’t watched the show in YEARS but i’ve been relistening to a couple of songs and i’ve forgotten how much they slap

(tying this to srmthg, “i’m me” is such a nova-coded song. also hot take krinkle is basically doofenshmirtz if he went off the deep end)

the songs are SO GOOD ikr???

i also think doof and krinkle are pretty emblematic of the theses of their two shows. weird ass essay infodump-type shit incoming.

krinkle comes from a background of cruelty. implied child neglect from his mom to the point where he had to build a new one. a dead end job where he can be fired on a whim by a boss who doesn't care.

for reasons that stem from, but are not directly caused by, krinkle's trauma, he is a horrific person. i've mentioned how krinkle is supposed to be a lesson in stranger danger to the little kids watching the show, but krinkle's behavior towards chiro is EERILY similar to how actual, real-world groomers interact with their victims. like, to the point where the more i think about it, the more justified i feel in thinking the team was in the right to effectively kill him on ranger 7. i could honestly write a whole other infodump post about how well krinkle works as an analogue to actual real-world abusers, but this was a funny silly post and i'm not going to go into that sort of detail on someone else's ask.

the reason i say all of this stuff about how horrible of a person krinkle is, is srmthfg is a show about the fundamental battle of good versus evil. chiro attempts to placate krinkle at first, being polite yet firm with the grown adult who could very easily be trying to hurt him. yet when krinkle actively causes chiro physical harm, the only thing to really do is fight back any way you can; because sometimes, against true evil, violence is the only answer.

phineas and ferb is a different show, though. there aren't any real villains, outside of i guess second dimension doofenshmirtz. every other bad guy is either shown to have redeemable qualities or is so benign that they don't even matter. doof's parents are horrible people, but they've stayed away from him in the show proper. monogram's kind of an asshole to his employees, but he's ultimately fighting on the side of good.

and doofenshmirtz? he's evil, sure, but that's a very petty sort of evil. hardly ever does he have a plan that will cause serious physical harm to anyone. he has a moral code. thematically relevant to this analysis, he is normal around children (and is a wonderful father to boot).

krinkle and doof both come from tragic pasts and work on evil science and engineering experiments in their free time. their differences come from the attitudes of their universes. krinkle is from a universe where evil can and does exist, and if it comes for you or your loved ones, sometimes you have to do anything it takes to stop it. doof is from a universe where true evil does not exist at all.

One thing about Regina is she started out as a fan of the hyperforce. Because she grew up sheltered she admired the Hyperforce for their bravery and being able to explore where they want. Later on she realizes that there's more at stake and grows into a genuine hero and treats the Hyperforce as people. Essentially making her a foil for Gyrus Crinkle.

Y'all mind if I gush for a minute?

There's a detail in Incident on Ranger Seven so miniscule yet pure and utter genius I have to bring it up.

I'm talking about the painting right at the very end of the episode.

Notice anything... off? Yeah sure Gyrus is there but besides him? Like, oh I don't know, Antauri's coloring for example? How he looks kinda... mismatched?

It may seem like a graphical error...

...until you realize Gyrus is the author of this painting...

...and the last time we saw him was back in Season 1.

What really sells this for me is the fact the episode's script doesn't address this at all.

Like, you can't tell me this guy, who is botherline obsessed with the Hyperforce, didn't immediately notice the sudden color shift when the monkeys first met him in the episode.

... Considering the aforementioned obsession... it's questionable how Gyrus isn't aware of Antauri's new colors already. The episode doesn't give us an explanation, or even a hint of an explanation. So it could be anything, him not being interested in keeping up as he's quite literally living in a fantasy, not having the option to keep up, or the team spent so little time on Shuggazoom between Antauri's resurrection and this episode (legit only staying home until they trained Jinmay to protect Shuggazoom, then yeeting themselves to outer space), very few citizens noticed or talked about the color shift. Whatever the reason, it doesn't change anything so MOVING ON-

When the monkeys confront him about Chiro's kidnapping, Gyrus, painting a random dog in an oriental costume, is all cool and innocent. Granted, he has to act like that because he indeed has Chiro locked up, so he doesn't get the chance to question the color change out loud... but heck, the writers could have just given us 2 seconds of Gyrus looking at Antauri confused or something among those lines to suggest Gyrus' unawareness, but no...

What we got instead is Nova gesturing towards Antauri while referring to him by name. Basically, she silently told Gyrus that yes, this is still Antauri, he just looks different now, while simultaneously not implying anything about Gyrus' unawareness to the audience.

As the Hyperforce goes off to investigate and Gyrus is left alone, still recharging his brain (... whatever the hell that means...), he has some time to spare.

We see throughout the episode that the majority of the dude's paintings are negative, usually featuring crying animals. Meaning this one happy painting of him with the Hyperforce is special to him. Upon realizing it's out of date, he picks it up again and begins painting over Antauri's black self, starting from the head, as any artist would.

But, given the rest of the episode, he doesn't get enough time to finish it, so he leaves the painting hanging there for later and goes do the stuff we witness on-screen.

And with whatever the heck happened to Gyrus in the end, this painting is left unfinished on the author's easel, for who knows how long.

Another really smart thing the show does is when we get the close-up of this self-insert painting, the camera zooms towards Gyrus. Nothing is dragging the viewer's eyes to Antauri. His mismatched body is right there in your face, and yet, the show ignores it, treating it as an insignificant background detail.

AND ONE MORE NOTEWORTHY THING-

The pictures of the monkeys in the painting are recycled from the very end of The Sun Riders episode, meaning that someone on the art team had to go through the extra trouble of recoloring Antauri, but only partially. Heck, that someone even lightened Antauri's body a little, implying that Gyrus was already on it when the episode's main script called.

Whoever's idea was this is a total madlad and all the kudos to them.

Gawd... the attention to detail in this show is one of the best things about it. This random little misshap that could be written off as an error has so much meaning behind it it's insane...

Varian is a descendant of Lord Demanitus on his father side and inheritor of his keyblade when it came after Be very Afraid

Hiro, Chiro and Varian hang out as a three person best friend group sometimes, even though Hiro and Varian are dating

The Monkey Team helped Demanitus, who was the teacher for the Alchemist on Shuggazoom, get a robot monkey body of his own so he can teach the team and bond with Varian

Gyrus returns to become a superhero he always dreamed to be as Diane was using him for revenge on Hiro

The Keyblade wielders, Big Hero 6, and Rapunzel’s gang think that Gyrus is a nut but Rapzunal feels bad for him and Varian and Hiro think they’ve found the perfect rival to match with brain wise

As the gang and Gyrus with Pete face off one Shuggazoom, they discovered Gyrus’ baby room and that Zhan Tiri and Lord Demanitus are his parents and Gyrus was half demon by Captain Creighton, who’s ancestors have been hunting for Gyrus for generations

Gyrus the finally embraces his demon side, causing him to grow a snake neck, claws and goat horns as cast his fake surname Krinkle and embraces his real one, Gyrus Tiri-Demanitus

When Varian confronts his father about this, Quirin points out that Demanitus never married Zhan Tiri, though they were lovers once or had a son with her as he pointed out their entire family history of all of Demanitus’ five children and Varian being a descendant of the first born, Solomon. No name of Gyrus was there as Demanitus’ son

But Lord Demanitus points out that it is not true, and that Gyrus was his first born, but lamenting on the loss of his children

They search through the archives of Demanitus and learned that after Lord Demanitus left and Zhan Tiri banished, the Keyblade masters of that time refuse to have Gyrus inherit the Keyblade, sent him away to another world with a robot and gave the keyblade to Gyrus’ half brother Solomon, who was Lord Demanitus’ son but held no blood of Zhan Tiri

Gyrus was able to stay alive for so long because of his bloodline to the demon

Gyrus learned this from his robot mother after hacking into her systems and seeing her memories

Maleficent told him that his mother wanted him but it was the Keyblade master’s fault and that an imposter wielder has his keyblade and that it was their fault that Rapunzel was able to kill his real mother, fueling a grudge against Keyblade Wielders and Varian

Maleficent gives him his mother’s Seeker Keyblade and Gyrus let’s the darkness in his heart

Gyrus seek the Dawnstone for vengeance

But Varian beat him to it as the stone merges with Varian, turning him into the embodiment of the Dawndrop
