When the twins were around 11 years old, Min-Ki was killed in an accident that tore the family apart. Their mother fell into a depression, numbing the pain of losing her youngest with alcohol and frequent visits to opium dens leaving Min-ah to care for Min-ho. When Min-ah turned 21, she was engaged to Kim Woojin, a wealthy aristocrat from a prestigious family and long time friend. Her father, as an engagement and birthday gift, gave Min-ah a flower shop.

Short Bio: Min-ho was born 5 years after Min-ah was adopted, though he doesn’t know she isn’t his biological sister. He and his younger twin, Min-ki, enjoyed a fairly spoiled and sheltered upbringing. He always felt a little left out as his mother clearly favored Min-ki. After his brother’s death, Min-ah stepped up to take care of Min-ho. He sees her as more of a mother figure as a result. He is much more untrusting of people and doesn’t believe firmly in authority. He thinks his sister is far too trusting, seeing only the good in people. When he turned 19, his father appointed him a branch manager at one of the banks he had spent time working in during his youth. Min-ho spends his free time reading and admiring Miss Amelia S. Woodward, the local librarian and historian.

Short Bio: Min-ki was the twin brother of Min-ho and younger brother of Min-ah. He was the youngest sibling. When he was 11 years old, he was in a horrific accident and died tragically, an event that left his brother heavily scarred. In reality, Min-ki faked his own death to escape his abusive mother. His brother and sister have no idea what he went through and he never contacted them, until years later, he has a run in with Min-ah and recognizes her immediately.

Short Bio: Min-hyuk comes from a long line of successful businessmen. He owns and operates several successful businesses, all passed to him by his father, including a mine on the surface. When he was in his early 20’s, Min-hyuk married a much older woman, against his father’s wishes and nearly got himself disowned. He was married for only three years before his wife died suddenly, leaving everything to him. For an entire year, Min-hyuk was the prime suspect of her murder but no evidence was found against him. After spending two decades growing his father’s businesses, which were now his, Min-hyuk met Gong Hye-kyo, then in her early 20’s. He became infatuated with her and despite her lack of status or wealth, he asked for her hand in marriage. The first three years of marriage were wonderful except for difficulties conceiving. So they made the decision to adopt baby Kang Mo Yeon and renamed her Bang Min-ah. Five years later, Hye-kyo gave birth to twin boys Min-ho and Min-ki.

Short Bio: Hye-kyo was born into poverty in Arcadia. Though she came from nothing, she was incredibly smart, cunning, and as time went on, she grew into a very beautiful woman. She used her smarts and beauty to her advantage to get what she wanted. To make herself more appealing to future suitors she perfecting her cooking, sewing, and cleaning skills, while also studying in secret topics that women were not allowed to study. When she was in her early 20’s, Hye-kyo met Bang Min-hyuk and she knew immediately he was smitten with her. Although she didn’t match his affection for her, she said yes when he proposed to her, knowing he was an extremely rich man. In the beginning, they had a hard time conceiving a child but this was due to Hye-kyo purposely avoiding pregnancy with tonics and other serums. Five years after the couple adopted Min-ah, Hye-kyo fell pregnant by accident. Unbeknownst to her husband, she attempted to end the pregnancy and make it look like a miscarriage but failed and ultimately gave birth to twin boys, Min-ho and Min-ki. Although she loved all three of her children, it was clear she favored Min-ki and as such, was utterly devastated when he died and refused to take care of Min-ho. She became dependent on alcohol and opium to numb the pain of her loss.

Under a new name, he learned everything from law to combat. He trained for years as a sailor and soldier. He took over his Master’s estate when he passed on and is now known as the Benefactor. A businessman and sometimes lawyer for pirates. The Horizon, now under the control of Kim Hongjoong and a new crew, answers to him.

Backstory: Mippy’s birth family abandoned her at birth, a rich family with no children took her in as their own. The mother of the house thought that Mippy, due to her small stature, was too weak to be showed to the outside world. Do to that she grew up with little to no interaction with other furries. Eventually, at age 10 Mippy’s adoptive parents left for a business trip. She was left in the care of the maid, a tiger looking girl that, while Mippy’s parents were absent, the maid taught Mippy things her adoptive parents had never bothered too, and took her outside. Her first interaction was a rude lizard who pushed Mippy into a mud puddle, calling her some names that made the Maid extremely angry. The maid proceeded to yell at the lizard. During the commotion Mippy had run off crying, by the time the Maid had calmed down enough to look around, Mippy was nowhere to be seen. Mippy was lost in the town she had been sheltered from. Not knowing anything about social interaction Mippy hid away until she was found. A storm started up, scaring Mippy once more, she decided hiding wasn’t going to help anyone, so she tried to find her way back. Eventually she had made her way home, and everything was fine, she was petrified, but fine.

Due to the fear that had been implanted into Mippy when she was 10, Mippy refused to go outside anymore. So the maid taught her about the outside world, and other things inside what Mippy called ‘the safe place where mom hugs me sometimes’. It was just the basement, but it had no windows, and was sealed off from the rest of the world so for Mippy it was a safe haven. When Mippy was 15 the maid had her reading college level books, and doing anything a normal teenager could do. Her parents found out about her intelligence ate age 18 and decided something that made Mippy to scared to even breath. They wanted to send to a public college, both Mippy and the maid refused the idea. But the parents weren’t the types to take no for an answer, so Mippy was shipped off the college.

At college the only times Mippy was seen outside her dorm, rocking in a corner was for classes, and getting new books. She only ate whatever her roommate bought, which was usually pizza and chips. She graduated at age 21, earlier than her parents expected, so she couldn’t go home until she was 28. So she was stuck in a city, with no home, surrounded by people for 7 years.

Hi there! I'll be handling Mippy's critique. Since you didn't mention whether you had any specific questions, this is going to be more of a general review, but you can always send me a message later and tell me if there's something you wanted to know that I missed.

Let's cover Mippy's basic data first. You've got a lot of lists here in her personality, fears, likes, and dislikes. Those make a fine basis for a character, but they're not great in terms of actually communicating what your specific character is like. For example, you state that Mippy is "introverted, shy, [and] scared of anything and everything" - okay, but who IS she? Those are qualities lots of different people can have in lots of different ways, and they don't tell us a whole lot about who Mippy is as a person, which is what we want to know in this section. That's just three different qualities, and people are usually much more multifaceted than that. You need to really dig into Mippy's personality and figure out who she is in order to make sure she's a well-rounded character that readers will want to read about. Right now, she's pretty flat and one-dimensional, so it's a good idea to work more on developing her.

As far as her appearance goes, this is fine, but it would have been nice for some details about your world to be included above the profile. Are "bunny-cats" common? I noticed in the backstory that you mentioned her maid is a "tiger-looking girl", so maybe people with animal characteristics are totally normal in this world. Are there also humans with no animal characteristics? How do the different types of people get along? That's something that will affect Mippy all her life.

Mippy's backstory contains too many aspects that are just, well, too much, if I'm being honest, and most of those aspects combine to give you that flat personality I mentioned above. Abandoned at birth, adopted by wealthy parents who then apparently neglected her and left her upbringing to a maid; an experience with a bully that led to Mippy being severely traumatized; above-average intelligence that caused her to be shoved out of the home early - and then the refusal of her parents to allow her to return? This backstory makes her adoptive parents sound emotionally abusive, and I'm not sure that's your intent, but if it is, you need to ask yourself why. Why are the only things that have ever happened to Mippy bad, scary, traumatic things? Why hasn't anything nice ever happened to her? A tragic backstory doesn't automatically make a solid character.

Last, while we don't require it, a section about Mippy's relationships would certainly be of benefit here. How does she feel about her adoptive parents? How does she feel about the maid, who, despite having such a role in her backstory, doesn't have a name? How does she feel about her roommate? What are her relationships with these people like? Digging into these things can help you learn more about who Mippy is as a person. On that note, if I were Mippy's roommate and my only interaction with her was that she ate the food I bought, even though she's got wealthy parents and can undoubtedly feed herself, I'd be pretty mad about it. The interactions Mippy has with these people have consequences, and you should keep those in mind too.

I think you have some good ideas here, but you need to tone down all the angst in Mippy's backstory and flesh out her personality a lot more. Short Bio: Bang Chan, also called Chris sometimes, is the captain of the Double Knot. He is the illegitimate son of Bang Min-hyuk and his mistress, making him the half brother of Min-ah and Min-ho, a relation he is aware of. He came to be the captain of his ship when he got lucky and bought her for an extremely low price. He then enlisted the help of his best friend Felix to fix the ship and restore her. Once the ship was in working condition, Chan and Felix searched for a crew, finding Changbin and Jeongin together and brought them aboard. Chan met Han in Chalcedony during school but got to know him in an underground fight club.

Short Bio: Felix was born in Leadporte, the son of a foreman. His father died when he was a child leaving him and his mother alone in the city. His mother remarried after some time and his step father was a miner but a much better man than his birth father. He worked hard to make sure Felix would have a better life than his current one. Felix left Leadporte to attend school in the capital where he met Han and, by extension, Christopher Bang. Felix befriended the older man, despite their 5 year age gap. The three were inseparable, hanging outside of school together. When Chris bought the Double Knot, the three of them chose to abandon school and start a pirate crew.

After his sister was married off to an old count and she moved to Arcadia, Jisung decided he didn’t want to live the aristocratic lifestyle anymore. He and the friends he made in school (Bang Chan and Felix) decided to drop out of school and become pirates. Going by his family name, Han, he started to gain notoriety in the underground fight clubs in various cities where people began to learn his name and the reputation that followed it. After travelling with the Double Knot for a few years, he ended up in Arcadia where he ran into his sister, now an extremely wealthy widow. She welcomed him into her home, also welcoming his friends and the rest of the crew. He knows about his sister’s intimate relations with his friend and Captain and he encourages it.

Short Bio: Minho was born and raised in Emberton. His father, a sky sailor, died when he was a child and his mother, a well known seamstress, raised him and his infant brother. Falling in love with the night sky, Minho started teaching his little brother everything he knew about the stars. Having saved up enough money, Minho’s mother sent him to the capital to attend university. It was there he met the others and Chan, taken with Minho and his love for the stars and flight, asked him to join his crew. Initially Minho said no but Chan countered with an offer he couldn’t refuse, although no one knows what that offer was exactly, Minho won’t spill the secret deal between him and the Captain.

Personality: reserved and serious in front of strangers, relaxed and silly with the crew, a bit shy as well

Skills/Talents: knowledgeable about mechanics, can fix almost anything, helped rebuild and restore the Double Knot with the help of his apprentice, Jeongin.

Likes: his mother, Jeongin, the rest of the crew, freedom, adventure

Dislikes: drinking, drunkenness, Han and Felix’s antics when they drink, people picking on Jeongin

Goals/Ambitions: to save enough money for his mother to retire comfortably and not worry about taking care of other people’s children.

Strengths: mechanical work, hand to hand combat, surprisingly good with a sword but prefers to use a wrench instead

Weaknesses: the crew, his mother, Jeongin

Fears: losing his mother or the crew. He doesn’t really care what happens to him as long as the others are out of harm’s way.

Occupation: mechanic

Short Bio: Changbin was born in Ravenmoor and lived with his mother, who ran the orphanage. As he got older, he started to focus on mechanics and how things worked. He taught himself everything. He landed a job as a mechanic of skyships, bringing income to his mother. It was at the orphanage that he met Yang Jeongin, who was dropped off when he was five years old, allowing the two to grow up together. Jeongin shadowed Changbin’s every move and pleaded with the older boy to let him be his apprentice. Changbin relented after his mother saw the benefit of the brotherly relationship. The two have been together ever since. Changbin also grew up in the orphanage with Yunho and San.

Short Bio: Jeongin was born in Copperdrift to a pirate father and his on and off again lover. After his mother died, his father took him in, keeping him on board his ship until he was around five years old. Finding it difficult to continue rearing the child, his father dropped him off at the orphanage in Ravenmoor where Changbin’s mother raised him alongside 20 other children, including Yunho and San, the latter who was particularly drawn towards the younger boy and was always sneaking him snacks. Jeongin doesn’t remember when it started, but soon after arriving at the orphanage, he began following Changbin around, seeing him as his older brother. When they were in their teens, Jeongin begged Changbin to teach him mechanics, wanting to follow in his footsteps. When Changbin met Bang Chan, Jeongin was afraid Changbin would use the opportunity to leave him behind but Changbin refused to take the position on the Double Knot unless Jeongin was with him.

Dislikes: adventure, the crew complaining about not wanting to eat something specific, the crew, specifically Han and Felix, picking on Jeongin.

Goals/Ambitions: he just wants to live a full life, free from authority or control

Strengths: cooking, using various cooking utensils as weapons, catching the others trying to sneak food (they claim he has eyes in the back of his head, which he doesn’t deny but encourages).

Weaknesses: physical weakness, doesn’t know much about hand to hand combat but will use a cast iron skillet and metal spoon as a weapon if need be.

Fears: losing the crew and only family he has.

Occupation: cook

Short Bio: Seungmin was born to a pair of bakers in Voxstead. He is the brother of Emily (Yeosang’s late wife), who was adopted by his parents. When Emily took her own life and Yeosang left, Seungmin saw no reason to stay in Voxstead. His parents, saddened by the death of their daughter and granddaughter, died a few years after Seungmin left Voxstead. At some point, Seungmin came into contact with Han after he beat him in a game of cards. Han and Felix were about to take back their losses when Chan stopped them and offered Seungmin a place on the Double Knot.

Short Bio: Born and raised in Fort Blackburg, Hyunjin is the son of a high ranking official in the military and a part of the aristocratic class. He attended the best schools and went to attend university in the capital where he eventually met Chan who found his inventor’s spirit a viable asset and asked him to join his crew. After meeting Changbin, Hyunjin helped to improve the inner workings of the Double Knot to make her the fastest skyship in the air. Hyunjin and Chan don’t always see eye to eye and Hyunjin knows better than to cross Chan because he’s seen what the older man is capable of.
