i think a lot of people in the fandom have a bad habit of acting as if aziraphale should know everything we, the audience, know about crowley, and that he should therefore be more sympathetic to feelings that aziraphale literally doesn't even know crowley has, because crowley hasn't told him.

#good omens #not to mention how aziraphale is autistic coded and as an autistic person i have been made to feel bad for not reading others' feelings #and acting accordingly when i literally could not and did not read them.#people expect you to “read between the lines” when you literally CAN'T #and put the onus on you to do that because they don't want to make the effort to communicate effectively with an autistic person #so you teach yourself to walk on eggshells around everyone and take notice of every little emotion they may or may not be showing #just to minimize the chances of upsetting anyone #sound familiar? congrats you may be autistic ❤️

I love Michael Sheen so much that man is an acting genius and so talented. The things he does with micro-expressions are especially beautiful and he shines in every role I’ve ever seen him in. He is, in my opinion, the blueprint of an acting chameleon, he completely transform into roles and obviously cares so much for his characters. I hope it turns out that Maggie is "just" a human. I hope it turns out that there is absolutely nothing supernatural or occult or celestial or whatnot about her, fuck, I hope it turns out it's NINA instead.

Fuck, I'm trying very hard not to be frustrated and upset, but I am. I am because it's been over a month and people are still taking Maggie's clearly neurodivergent, and more specifically autistic, behaviour and twist it into "oh look no normal human is like this she's so creepy she must be a demon or an angel" like are you LISTENING to yourselves?

YES she talks differently sometimes, yes she's emotional, yes she did ONE FUCKING SPELLING MISTAKE while she was literally sobbing her eyes out. People are like that, you know. People that don't drink and that didn't go to parties and don't socialize well exist. I'm that person.

I had absolutely ZERO thoughts about Maggie being a celestial because to me, she isn't weird. There is nothing off about her. She's like me, I felt SEEN, I felt recognized and acknowledged.

The worst part is that people LOVE headcanoning Muriel or Aziraphale or Crowley as autistic but as soon as it's not something people can either infantilize or twist into something else, they hate it. Muriel gets praised for the same traits that have people calling Maggie a villain.

Can we stop doing that? Can we stop taking people who are weird or visibly disabled or different and shoving them into the non-human box? Do you have any idea how dehumanizing that is for people who are like those characters?

We had canonically non-binary characters this season that are human, so why, and please fucking tell me WHY, is it impossible in your minds to have disabled humans around? Why does anyone slightly weird have to be a supernatural being?

Just because Maggie's behaviour isn't played off as a joke? Because she is allowed to be a middle-aged, lesbian autistic woman? Because you cannot infantilize her like you can with Muriel?

Please tell me because I don't fucking know.

Once again, I sit here in absolute awe of David Tennant and Michael Sheen's acting. (And also the writing for this show.)

Let's talk about S1 E6 of Good Omens, shall we? (spoilers incoming, *in Crowley's mocking tone* obviously.)

Something that absolutely went over my head the first time I watched this episode was how masterfully they fooled us about the body swap. It's a wonderful surprise the first time around, but when you re-watch the episode, certain things makes you question why Crowley acted the way he did at the trial, and same with Azirophale in Heaven. Something seemed off the whole time. And during my first watch, I took it as "oh, they're probably both nervous about what's to come." But noooo, I was dead wrong.

Here's some amazing hints that conveyed, in the most subtle way, that maybe these two supernatural beings were not in their usual bodies.

The Ice Cream Stand

From the moment they go to the ice cream stand, Aziraphale's face looks rather stressed and serious. It's rather out of the ordinary for Aziraphale, there's always a sense of emotional vulnerability in his eyes, but in this scene, there's none of that. He looks around and scans the surrounding, the way Crowley always does. He walks around Crowley, the way Crowley always does around Aziraphale.

In fact, what would be expected of the real Aziraphale would be a stiff stand and some kind of nervous smile, and at least a bit of anticipation for eating ice cream. But who do we smiling instead? "Crowley". (Putting the quotations there because of course they have switched bodies before going to the ice cream stand.) And look at how David smiles here. It's a tight smile after receiving the ice cream cone, the kind that Aziraphale would give in appreciation if he was interacting with the ice cream person (which, he technically is, in Crowley's body.) If David was acting as the real Crowley, we would have had more of grin and maybe a slight tilt of the head even.

It's such a subtle thing but my god does it makes such a big difference and shows how much David and Michael know about each other's characters and I can't even-

Reaction to Gabriel Entering the Scene

Firstly, we have a close up of Aziraphale's hand and Crowley still adjusting to how the angel's body moves and functions (which can be easily taken as adjusting to the tight grip of the rope. Honestly, it's probably a bit of both).

Then Gabriel enters and what we would naturally expect is Aziraphale losing his shit by adjusting in his seat nervously, checking to make sure he looks okay, and loads of anxiety in his voice. But we get none of that. He doesn't even nervously laugh at Gabriel's joke, just gives the slightest little twitch, the kind Crowley would give when he's stressed. There's not a hint of nervousness in his eyes, as if his emotions are tucked away, something Crowley is quite good at.

Holy Water/ Eternal Fire

When Eric shows up from Hell with the eternal fire, the real Aziraphale would've been utterly surprised, but the one sitting down just watches Eric come in as if he was expecting the demon. In fact, if you look closely, everyone reacts to the fire EXCEPT Eric and "Aziraphale".

And when Michael looks at the fire in his subtle (and brilliant) way, the look can be read as both our angel looking reflectively at the very thing that could destroy him AND as our demon in the angel's body holding back the anger that he feels when he sees that this is what they were going to do to his best friend had they not switched bodies.

And can't forget the iconic scene of the roar with the fire spitting out. That is such a Crowley move and so out of character for Aziraphale!!

And we can see the sheer joy as his eyes glow in a shade of yellow awfully similar to Crowley's. I mean that grin is also literally Crowley?!

Lastly, we have the moment where Gabriel says "shut up and die already" and rewatching the show with context of how angry Crowley was at this statement, I can literally feel Crowley's anger in Aziraphale's body here. Michael how do you this? My two brain cells are literally going brrr.

Meanwhile, in Hell, when Archangel Michael enters the scene with the holy water, Crowley looks back and is genuinely surprised, but really it's Azirophale, in Crowley's body, who's like "wait a minute, Michael?!" The real Crowley wouldn't have been surprised even one bit. He'd probably make a snarky remark in fact about something like how Heaven and Hell are not that different after all.

Tone of Voice & Dialogue

It's just all so perfect. I remember reading on Neil's Tumblr that Aziraphale generally speaks with every word in every sentence pronounced perfectly and in an almost bookish way. Crowley, on the other hand, mumbles a lot of his words. They role off the tongue very quickly. There's a peculiar snake-like vibe to the way he speaks.

But during the trial? Crowley doesn't make a single super snarky remark or mumble his words. He stands quite straight (no putting his weight on one knee or slithering around) and the way he speaks is awfully similar to Aziraphale.

"Well, yes, um..." (87.5% of Aziraphale's sentences start like this lol)

"I don't suppose in the nine circles of Hell, there's such a thing as a rubber duck?" (Crowley level snarky yes but Crowley already knows that it doesn't exist, so he would've framed it differently if it was really him speaking. This is very much peak "unexpectedly funny" Aziraphale humor.)

Also, I think the very first hint we have about the body swap, as far as dialogue goes, is when "Crowley" is knocked to the ground and says "It's not a problem. It's a tickety-boo." Just cracks me up cause again, that's something our southern pansy Aziraphale would say.

And then there's the whole scene at the park after the fact, but this post is already long enough as is lol.

I hope I'm not repeating something that another person has already mentioned. I'm just mesmerized by David and Michael's acting and Neil's writing is all. Honestly, there so many other micro moments I didn't cover. And my 2 am brain doesn't have energy for making GIFs, I hope the still images will do. Alt Text will be added soon as well.

aziraphale’s eyes in this scene utterly destroy me but let me draw your attention to his mouth

i noticed before that michael has a tiny dimple in the right corner of his mouth when he smiles. if you look closely you can see its shadow here. it’s a flash, blink and you’ll miss it moment but i can’t unsee it

so while he’s upset and devastated, there is the tiniest inkling of a smile almost as if his subconsciousness is jumping for joy over the kiss and realization that crowley loves him!

the very next thing he does is touch his lips in a way acknowledging this powerful wave of conflicting emotions…

it's been more than a month yet thinking about how Neil said season 2 is a bridge to what was supposed to be in the book sequel still keeps me awake at night 'cause the math isn't mathing for me

you see, i can’t see how it was supposed to work, taking into consideration Aziraphale's book personality. i mean, Aziraphale's final s2 decision, in my humble opinion, wouldn’t at all work for his book!version (and radio!version, obviously. I'm still not really sure if it works for me even in terms of his show!version), since book!Aziraphale, how do i put it? yeah, i doubt he’d give a single fuck about the idea of reforming heaven and making it better and stuff. like under no circumstances whatsoever

because — though I might be wrong — I always thought the point of Aziraphale's character is that he doesn’t believe in heaven being right. it's evident from this part of the book when he interferes in a TV program while on a search for a body. he calls heaven propagandistic here and says it doesn't matter who wins, hell or heaven, because humanity loses either way

and it's not, in fact, the first time Aziraphale shows disapproval of heaven and its methods. he has already said himself that hell and heaven are practically the same before here, while discussing their head offices with Crowley

so he knows for a fact that heaven is just as thirsty for blood and cruel as hell. they are not the side of the light. he knows it from the start, and the fact that heaven wants war just as much as hell does is not an insight for him. it just reassures him of what he's known before. and he's quite strong in his beliefs, too

and i just keep trying to figure out how we were supposed to get to book!Aziraphale not only going back there but also taking up an archangel position — and if we ever were, really

i honestly can’t find an answer to this in my head, so i thought i might share it here. i can’t be the only one thinking about this on repeat, and maybe someone else has found an answer or a loophole they’ll want to share so i can find peace again

MITSKI TIME MOTHERFUCKERS!! this one will have a lot of like theorizing adjacent stuff

“There's nobody better than you

It took me a while 'til I knew” despite being a demon crowley has better morals than most angels ngl, but azi would be blinded by the fact that he’s a DEMON and probably didn’t realize that fact until the apocawasn’t happened

“But you knew from the start it was us, didn't you?” crowley was in love with azi from the start and he knew it, too. azi was also probably in love with crowley from the start, but he didn’t realize it until 1941. he probably realized crowley had known all along during the s2 finale

“Now I lay as I study a blank wall

Would you spare me your voice if I call?” aziraphale is probably drowning in guilt in heaven, constantly thinking about crowley and how he wants to go back to earth, but he ALSO knows (thinks) that crowley would be livid with him and it scares him

“'Cause you waited and watered my heart 'til it grew” crowley waited the whole time for azi to get to a place where he was comfortable, i firmly believe crowley knew the entire time azi loved him back, he was just waiting for azi to realize it as well, and he just never knew that he already had realized it.

“So, I don't blame you

If you want to bury me in your memory” well this one’s pretty self-explanatory no? azi knows (thinks) crowley would be furious at him and he understands why

“I'm not the girl I ought to be, but” i always interpret this line as “i’m not the angel i ought to be” and well that’s pretty self-explanatory too. azi has never been a perfect angel, and maybe he thinks if he was he wouldn’t be in so much pain

“You can tell them what you saw in me

And not how I turned out to be” azi’s first impression on crowley was that he was an angel that cared so much about humanity he’d go against god’s orders for them. but as they’ve gotten to know each other, crowley’s also learned that azi is selfish. he almost gets discorporated because he wants crepes, he gets convinced to thwart armageddon because crowley brings up his books and restaurants. but he still wants crowley to remember him with the best parts of him, the parts that were in some little part selfless. he wants crowley to have good memories of him, even though he doesn’t (HE DOES) deserve it.

“There's some kind of burning inside me” this is wild wild theorizing but i think azi should’ve fallen by now, crowley was thrown out just for asking questions which azi has done many many times. but maybe god is biding her time, giving him a different punishment? maybe he’ll fall very, very slowly, he won’t even notice

“It's kept me from falling apart

And I'm sure that you've seen what it's done to my heart

But it's kept me from falling apart” and maybe azi knows this too, but he thinks it’s just crowley rubbing off on him, but he loves crowley, so why would he care?

“Now here I lay as I wonder about you

Would you just tell me what I'm meant to do?” remember he wanted crowley to lead with him. crowley and azi have always been a team, so leading by himself must be so stressful, and he def wishes he could just turn and ask crowley what he thinks they should do, before he remembers he didn’t come.

“'Cause I've waited and watered my heart 'til it grew

You can see how it's blossomed for you” in azi’s perspective, he was offering crowley comfort and safety. and crowley rejected that. i won’t pretend to know how azi took that, but he’s def hurt and feels betrayed. what happened to running away to alpha centauri? is this not the same? he took a risk, he asked crowley to run away with him just like crowley had many times before, so why would he reject him?

“You can tell them what you saw in me

And not the way I am” azi wants to be seen as good and heavenly and a pure angel even though he’s not, at least to most people. he didn’t care with crowley but he wishes he’ll at least keep up his good nice angel reputation (he probably will even though he’s heartbroken)

“You can tell them what you saw in me

And not the way I used to be” but maybe, just maybe, azi wants to be remembered as human. purely, unabashedly, human, with his flaws and his strengths, not as if he was some pure angelic force. he tells himself he wants to be a pure good nice angel and that’s why he wants crowley to tell people such. he wants to pretend he’s just the same as before he met crowley, but he’s not. and maybe he likes that. maybe he wants to be human. he wants to be flawed yet still good. but he isn’t. (he is.)

“'Cause there is nobody better than you” crowley is. (so is aziraphale.)
