Top Ten Hawks Moments of 2023
For Keigo's Birthday and for the end of this year, I have decided to make my top ten Hawks moments for all the chapters published this year.
10. "Hawks" gets torn into shreds by AFO
we had a lot of near-deaths for Hawks this year, but I think this was the most memorable as it happened, giving a very needed burst of humor to the AFO vs Hawks and the Heroes fight. Tokoyami's reaction was particularity heartbreaking.
Tumblr media
9. Whatever Level of Gay was Achieved Here
Tumblr media
This entire chapter was framed in a way that constantly put Hawks and AFO contrasting and melding and there are panels where their thoughts connect. I thought it was a very good way for Hori to make their dynamic fighting each other stand out. Also, the fight was ridiculously homoerotic.
8. Hawks Reminds Us It's About Connections, Stupid.
Tumblr media
A theme for the post-Jaku part of this manga has always been heroes needing to bridge that gap and see if they can connect with the villains. It's interesting that Hawks has been the canon mouthpiece among the adults for that view when he so utterly failed his own narrative-assigned connection. I know there was so much pushback in this moment because Keigo again thought of Endeavor, but it stood out to me in repeating this allegory of OFA linking everyone as the solution to the conflict in the first place.
7. Realizing They All Have the Power to Make Their Own Narrative
Tumblr media
Against a villain like One For All who wants to believe he's in his own light-novel, Keigo's own issues distinguishing reality and fantasies managed to settle down. He's always resigned himself to being a caged bird and a martyr, so being pitted against a villain so into life being a foregone conclusion helped Keigo remember they all have more agency than they give them credit for.
6. I think all of Keigo's Rizz was in Fierce Wings
Tumblr media
Seriously, this is his normal fake hero persona on STEROIDS? It's fascinating how naturally this stuff comes to him. Like damn, he even has his tongue out, mocking All For One as he gets hoisted by his own petard, and has an arm around a vestige lady who looks suspiciously like All For One's mom, which I am accepting as canon until told otherwise. Say what you want about Hawks, for all his failures and paradoxes, the dude has serious BDE. I'd rate this higher but he had a lot of good moments.
5. Nothing beside remains, round the decay
Tumblr media
Probably one of the most striking panels this year, seeing a defeated, quirkless Keigo struggle to get up and meet the horde of encroaching Toga-Twice clones, holding the last remaining feather in a landscape of complete destruction made me think heavily of the Ozymandias poem. Keigo, who has always represented the hero system with his whole diamond-insignia carrying chest, seeing all the consequences of his actions and the futility of his actions in stopping the very future he'd allowed himself to commit murder to prevent. I wonder if it struck him how little it all meant as he faced his "presumed" doom.
4. Farewell, Fierce Wings!
Tumblr media
we bid goodbye to the quirk that continued to fight even as it was stolen into the eldritchian amalgamation that is All For One! The look in the vestige's face is so resigned and bitter-sweet as he decays away. Keigo isn't his quirk, but it's remarkable how willing to face death both of them are.
3. What he really wants
Tumblr media
The interesting thing is the narration implies that either Keigo was telling Naomasa that the aging made AFO stronger as the battle happened, or still had enough control over his emotional state after being left in the dirt to tell him what he observed. The latter is, well, not that surprising when it comes to Keigo, who won't let being quirkless or maimed or delimbed get in the way of being at his job, but that's not what Hori shows us.
No, Hori doesn't show us Keigo standing up or sitting up, no he shows us a Keigo clinging to Tokoyami, a complete break in the many masks he wears to show actual devastation and need for comfort.
There's no Keigo pretending he's okay. There's just one panel showing us a young man embracing his unconscious student after probably one of the most horrific experiences in his life. Keigo, who has been mentioned to be a person who puts so much distance himself and other people, is the one the one clinging to Fumikage.
2. He really was, wasn't he?
Tumblr media
As the Twice clones disappear, we see a melting Toga-Twice on the brink of killing Keigo, who makes no move to stop her as she slices him open. No, he seems almost penitent as he accepts death, only pausing to tell her he knows why she's killing him. Make no mistake, the moment he saw Twice back, he knew what this was all about; killing Jin. In this moment, he doesn't hold himself back with saying killing Jin was necessary - the future Jin's murder was meant to prevent came about anyway, no, this is just Keigo being honest that he really liked Jin, anyway. This panel might show the first real regret we've gotten from him, which is likely why he was so open about not fighting back. Because Keigo knows that he does "deserve" this.
Tumblr media
1. Haven’t you already done your best, Hawks?
Tumblr media
Chapter 185, this panel introduces us to Hawks.
Tumblr media
Two hundred chapters later and we finally see Hawks, for all intents and purposes, resoundingly defeated. His quirk is gone. The army he had as back up, defeated. His student lying defenseless beside him. His hero-partner having left to fight his own battles.
Tumblr media
And yet, despite it all, despite losing his quirk, despite every sign of failure around him, especially as he now has to reckon with his own moral event horizon, Keigo's capable of saying one thing:

Love!!!! I've 🍃🍃 and I just had the best idea for a Bokuto story! Imagine you are dating sweet himbo bokuto and after about 6 months you confess to him that you're a masochist (like Hori in Horimiya). You ask him to degrade you in public and he just can't because of how much he loves you and respects you. You keep encouraging him and eventually when you're being extra bratty during his MSBY practice, he calls you an attention craving slut or something infront of the team and drags you off home "you're going to regret asking me to degrade you". 😍😍😍😍😍
I LOVE YOUR MIND SO MUCH!!!!! I will give u a consensual smooch in the brain if you’d let me!!!
18+ content!!! MINORS DO NOT INTERACT (pls)
timeskip! bokuto x reader
warnings: degradation, jealousy, spit kink
Tumblr media
Bokuto loves you so much, more than anything or anyone else in the world, so when you told him that you wanted to be degraded by him in public, it through him for a loop. This boy does nothing but praise you so he’s lowkey questioning whether or not you actually liked it when he praised you in bed huhuhu poor baby boy just doesn’t know what to do with himself.
He’s so shy whenever you mention it, too, always so timid and blushy whenever you bring it up, especially when you beg for him to do it while you guys are in public.
but bokuto has his limits, and you were going to make sure to push every single one of his buttons until you got your way<33
usually you’d be a little quiet during his practices, giving him a little whoop here and there for motivation. but this time? you wanted to be an absolute menace. you’d say hi to him and his teammates, but this time you went so far as to giving them all a big hug, except for bokuto who only got a kiss on the cheek from you >:0 mans is fuming silently as you pay more attention to the other MSBY jackals rather than him, despite his silence, his serves and spikes are hard enough to take out someone’s hand as he slowly gets more frustrated.
he finally hit the tipping point when all of them were finally done with practice, you approached sakusa with such an innocent smile on your face, the man totally unaware of your devious plan to make your significant other jealous.
“hi kiyoomi!” you beamed, holding up your hand ina small wave, to which he responded with a wave back, only for you to take his hand and measure it out against yours. “wow, your hands are so big! good job on your serves today, I see you’ve really improved—“
“is that how it is, (name)? you wanna act like an attention seeking slut while your boyfriend’s around? hm?” bokuto all but yells out, causing the rest of the people within the vicinity to jump, and you take your hand away from sakusa’s almost immediately.
bokuto grabs you by your wrist as he drags you towards the locker room. kiyoomi winces as he sees the death glare bokuto gives you.
as soon as you’re inside, he basically slams you against one of the lockers, wrists held tightly in his hands as he pins them above your head, leaving you a cowering, vulnerable mess. in spite of his rough treatment, you feel your legs quiver in anticipation, a wet spot forming in your panties as you feel his hot breath against your cheek as he leans in closer to whisper in your ear.
“you’re gonna fucking regret asking me to degrade you, because from now on, you only get to respond to names like slut, whore, and cumdump? are we clear?”
you couldn’t have nodded your head faster at his words, he presses closer to you, grabbing you by your thighs which tell you one thing: jump. and you do, wrapping your legs around his torso as he ruts into you, mouth on yours in a heated kiss, you can’t help but moan as he bites your lower lip. feeling how hard he is through his shorts, you pull him to you closer, wrap your legs around his waist tighter, wanting nothing more but friction between your aching cunt and his thick cock.
suddenly, you feel yourself being dropped onto the floor, wincing as you feel the cold tile hit your knees. bokuto pulls out his cock from his shorts, slapping up against his abdomen, already leaking beads of precum along his tip. you can’t help but drool at the sight of him. noticing your stare, he smirks, grabbing you by your hair, using his other hand to open your mouth with his thumb pressed upon your lower lip.
“fucking cock hungry slut,” he spits into your mouth, and your swallow it happily. “‘m gonna make such a fucking mess of this pretty face.”

The only good thing about that chapter is the fact it means this horrible and disastrous arc will be finally and thankfully over and the manga will most likely end soon. Im really glad that Im not that invested in mha anymore otherwise I would be way more pissed off. Unbelievable how you can fuck up an final arc so bad and do your own characters so dirty.
Izuku deserved better.
Tomura deserved better.
Mr compress literally sacreficed his own ass for nothing. He deserved better.
Every single other lov member deserved better.
The ua students deserved better.
The ofa vestiges deserved better.
Afo deserved better.
The ONLY character hori paid attention to and cared about was that horrible written, ugly and screaming waste of space, who he calls his favorite character.
Listen, I get that the job of a mangaka is stressful and can have bad effects on your health. But that doesnt justify you should rush the end of the story and dissapoint your readers like that. That an author cant make everyone of his readers happy is logical, but with this chapter it feels like hori deliberately planned to piss off almost the whole fanbase and Im not sure he can turn this around again even with a twist in the next chapters.
Im a big dfo believer and I still think its canon. I believe hori will keep his promise when he said "you wont be dissapointed" when hisashi will finally be "revealed". But even if he confirms it at the very end, the rest of this manga was sadly still a huge dissapointment and waste of my time. Dont make one of your main themes "villains are humans too and deserve to be saved" if in the end they die anyway all alone and miserable or will end up in prison. Yes, they should face consequences for their crimes, but they cant become better people again, if they are DEAD! Dont choose a theme for your story if in the end you go against it!

Shigaraki Tomura, Izuku Midoriya, and their past selves in Horikoshi's other works, an Analysis.
How their archetypes can be traced back all the way to Hori's oldest works!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today I finally felt with the energy to write this analysis I've been cooking in my head for some months!
I'll be pulling apart the core elements of each of Hori's past work's protagonist duo and how they are essential to everything Hero Academia has became
It will be long.
First things first, let's start with Horikoshi's first work ever!
1. Tenko One Shot.
This tale tells us the story of two main characters, Hana and obviously, Tenko!
Hana is a woman aspiring to be a samurai, she is hopeful and stubborn, but is shunned down by most and ridiculed by other samurais for being, well, a woman wanting to be something only men can be.
But just like Izuku, she is VERY stubborn, and won't give up her dreams at all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
( You can read the full thing here btw! https://imgur.com/a/v7oBkfx )
Our second protagonist, and main tittle of the story, is a little boy called Tenko, who she meets when he literally attacked her lol
Like Tomura, he has the power to decay anything he touches, and is in seek of revenge, his goal is to destroy all swords after his mother was cruelly killed by a samurai.
Despite all the hatred the feels, he is still a kid, suffering and crying in seek of relief for his grief.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He is known as a vandal, and is being wanted dead or alive by the authorities for interfering in battles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hana, gentle and caring, notices the pain in Tenko and takes him with her, to take care of him, after all, he is just a child.
But after being found by an official, believes she has the chance to be recognized as a samurai if she give Tenko to the authorities, and well- it obviously goes terribly wrong- as she is attacked by them instead.
Suddenly realizing how cruel they truly are, she takes her own sword and fight them to defend Tenko, making Tenko also realize, swords can be used to protect and save.
In the end, they end up to saving each other, Hana saving Tenko's heart, making him realize his hatred will never lead anywhere, and lift the weight of his chest by winning a friend, and Tenko making Hana realize war is more than what she thought.
Tenko obviously, is literally Tomura's first prototype, the decay power, the white hair, the hatred, guilt and grieve are all there.
Tumblr media
But what if I told you Hana is also, pretty similar to Izuku? Both have a dream that is deemed impossible to reach, due to something they lack, and are a joke to most people, but despite it all they never give up, and manage to reach their goals. They are also strong but gentle and caring ( ngl Izuku might even be more soft than Hana ajhdka)
Tumblr media
2. Oumagadoki Zoo
Tumblr media
This one, guess what, also have a female protagonist, yes also called Hana.
Aoi Hana is a bubbly, awkward and stubborn girl with her head in the clouds, but teased by everyone, known as "good for nothing" and useless.
She then decides to get a job during summer break, to prove she is more than capable of helping.
As an animal lover, she gets a job at the local Zoo as a cleaner, but she discover that the Zoon principal is a literal bunny person.
Tumblr media
Shiina, the other protagonist of the story, is a man-child dude, he was cursed as a kid for being mean to a bunny, turned into a rabbit until he learned to be kind and help animals. Much like Tomura, he is short tempered, a gremlin, a little bitch!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He created the zoo to try to break the curse, and now counts with Hana's help to do so. The zoo, by the way, is also full of cursed half human half animal people!
The manga was canceled, so Hori had to rush the end, it has only 5 volumes, but I believe it would end with Hana finally breaking Shiina's curse.
Well, the similarities to Tomura? Once again through the roof, he is literally Tomura without depression (and scars and wrinkles)! He is a brat, selfish, intelligent and powerful, but incredibly dumb, he even refers to the other zoo people as "comrades" the exact same word Tomura refers the League of Villains as! They even sit down the same, careless way! Bad posture kings 🦐
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, I think you noticed that Hana's story is also familiar? Yes! IZUKU
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both are deemed useless, are clumsy and awkward, and have pretty much low self esteem, but are kind, gentle and loving, and have an altruistic heart!
Just like in Tenko, Hana is key to saving Shiina's heart, and both learn a lot with each other, as Shiina sees the worth in Hana, and Hana sees the kindness in Shiina, evolving each other to the better.
3. Shinka Rhapsody One shot
Tumblr media
This one is pretty much lost media, very few people know about it, but i found a thread about it
(thread here https://twitter.com/HeroFletch/status/1273054822162456578 )
It is literally MHA but the quirks work in a different way
This time the first protag is the man and the girl is the second, but it doesn't matter lol
The story happens in a world similar to the one of the raise of quirks in MHA, criminal rate is all time up.
The protagonist Magari/Masashi(idk) is, again, a guy with strong personality, seeking for revenge and power, as his family was murdered by a serial killer
He got a power similar to Kirishima's, but oh boy his face and personality is just Tomura all over again, Hori's favorite OC
Tumblr media
And guess what??? Ohh he also has a female companion helping him???? YES HE DOES!
Her name is Aoi, yes, like Aoi Hana from the zoo one, yes guess what, yes, bubbly awkward, yes.
Tumblr media
She is an aspiring detective and has the habit of asking people if they like Katsudon, her favorite food.
Wait... Katsudon? As favorite food... Where I saw this before-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Boku no Hero One shot.
Tumblr media
here if u wanna read https://yesmangas1.com/manga/boku-no-hero-ym23733/one-shot#1
This one is a break to the pattern, no Shigaraki look alike, no Aoi Hana, but, someone who is pretty similar to her in personality:
Jack Midoriya
Jack Midoriya is a quirkless man in a super society, his job is to sell support items, but he is too awkward, clumsy and stubborn, causing more problems than helping, he has an impossible dream of becoming a hero, so he tries to become the first quirkless hero! (it goes wrong)
There is a girl in this story too, i guess she is this Izuku's Uraraka, they are both literally the same in personality, so i guess hori Split Hana in two for this one.
5. Barrage or Sensei no Bulge
(the second tittle is so funny lmao)
This time hori completly threw everything out and said: fuck the pattern, fuck Hana, fuck Tenko wanabe!
It has literally nothing to do with anything he did previously. Astro, can be similar to Izuku, but hmmm not fit the mold, so i'll just skip lmao, it also was canceled, ending in 2 volumes anyways.
SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION
So far, we can conclude a very recurrent pattern in every work Horikoshi publicized (except barrage lolz)
Protagonist 1:
Is a gentle, caring, stubborn, clumsy and awkward person, they have a heart of a hero, but are often seen as weak, useless, and stupid for dreaming too high. They can be strong when they want to, but feminine and loving too, they are altruistic, loyal, and focused. Their role in the story is to find their own self worth, as well as help the 2nd protagonist break free from a torment.
Protag 2:
A selfish, childish, mean and also stubborn boy, who's heart is filled with hatred, hurt and grief, they are cursed somehow, and besides having a rough exterior, deep inside they are still just a child who seeks relief. Their role in the story, is to after Protag 1 advances, open up and allow themselves to be saved in heart and mind.
Of course, due to the past series length of few pages to only a few volumes, they open up to each other and befriend rather quickly, but MHA is well- 40 volumes long by now, ofc course P.2 will give much more trouble to open up, it's not that easy to cure someone's bitterness and guilt!
Which leads to Horikoshi's last work, My Hero Academia.
The story of protagonist 1 incarnated as a mix of every character Hori wrote before as Izuku Midoriya, a quirkless boy who feels useless, but has a big dream, a kind heart and the desire to save.
And also the story of MHA's society's biggest victim, a childish man who has been hurt in every possible way, by every person he dared to trust, be it his own family or his "sensei", Tomura Shigaraki is nothing but a child at heart, crying onto his puppy, waiting for the one who will save him.
This is undeniable, I was already sure with everything I've read in MHA that Tomura is getting saved, Izuku yelled it himself, and the narrative is walking towards that.
But after analyzing Hori's part works, and see how wholesome and hopeful his stories are, how he desires to transmit the message that everyone deserves a second chance, i have no doubt.
Tomura is DESTINED to be not only saved, redeemed or live, but to have a happy ending and finally have a friend to trust.
Tumblr media
As every story so far ended with the kind one befriending and becoming a pillar to the hurt one.
Izuku and Tomura are more than the heart of My hero Academia, but also the heart of everything Horikoshi wants to tell to the world.
They are fated to end the same way every time, in every universe.
BESTIES ARC IS COMING.

MHA CH 421 rambles
Ok so this was a chapter ok. Iam personally not a fan of what happend here but you do you.
I hated AFO's little monologue. introspection thingy and to be honest sukuna does it better. Look Iam critical of both jjk and MHA as they fail in their own aspects on certain things but dam I couldn't care less for AFO and his monologue I seriously couldn't. Yoichi as already dead and if AFO's goal was to be a supervillain from a comic and to reunite with yoichi then why not just idk get the doctor to do it for him or just die to reunite with AFO 🤷‍♀️. His whole thing about tragedy making people stronger or him not feeling anything didn't even hit well because his development sucks and him coming back feels repetitive anyway
Tumblr media
Sero getting to respond to the things about tragedy felt so underwhelming I didn't like it. Sero throughout the whole and entire series lacked any screentime and development for him to be getting a big moment that should be given to another character feels like a horrible move. We seriously don't know of anything that has affected sero aka hurt him directly in the manga (aka something just him) so it all feels underwhelming and disappointing. Unironically, I feel like sero should of been one of those characters who left the story or just stayed as a minor character because hori is trying to develop and give him importance way too late into the story.
Tumblr media
Where is inko?!?!?! So we see everyone heck we see the civilians, gran Torino, Kota and Eri all comment and hope for izuku to do something but inko his own mother isn't present. Now this probably means something bad is happening or will happen to inko but if nothing happens and she isn't present then dam classic neglectful inko strikes again ig or if they make it a gag that she fainted out of stress i will just hate it even more
Tumblr media
I hate that this is something out of the endgame and if hori was trying to be like gege by making everyone join it felt rubbish. Iam not a fan and I mean it I HATE the whole everyone joining in to fight AFO together type thing and I just do. To me it's Izuku's time to shine and people take down villains and do their jobs in other areas at this point everyone is doing more damage to AFO than Izuku who hasn't even landed a hit on izuku. Also why is it that character like Todorokis who have had their big moments here?!?!? It seems like this is a fight where hori is trying to make everyone have a moment before Izuku lands the final hit which doesn't sit right with me. Like there are characters here who have already had their moments like jirou, camie, yuuga, asui, mina and way more but they're here to ... Assist in the fight have another big moment and make AFO more of a potato character then a proper scary villain
Tumblr media
present mic is back which I love. One of the good things is that present mic is alive, it's good to have confirmation of that
Tumblr media
Even though I think erasers writing is heavily flawed at least someone is holding Izuku. At least izuku is getting something , some comfort out here at least someone is holding him but dam this seems like a disservice all of this seems like a disservice to izuku. Like I wonder do the civilians feel guilty does anyone feel sad or guilty for having this 16 year old child fight something way bigger than him in the name of peace and other peoples safety?
Tumblr media
I think the whole thing with Izuku getting that guy's shirt is rubbish and underwhelming. It just doesn't sit right with me, that guy's shirt would of probably been dirty as hell considering it's the only thing we have seen him wearing. Like @mikeellee told me it would of been more impactful if the shirt was given to izuku and that guy had a healing quirk or helped izuku more directly. Now I get that this is supposed to make the guy more likable and show that he ahs developed which we can see and dam hori can actually give some decent development when he wants to but it all falls flat and doesn't do much for me. Also I have seen someone say that izuku wearing this shirt and it covering his upper half is showing how he is losing his ability to be a hero and dam that breaks me.
Tumblr media
I can't with the Izuku running to the battlefield and the parallels kill me (we haven't really developed/moved on from chapter one considering the story just loops around itself). Izuku running towards danger quirkless thinking that it's his job because people who were supposed to help and protect him failed. Izuku now quirkless with only the tiny and fading embers of OFA thinning trying to defeat OFA with the damage of kudos quirk still effecting him. All of this to protect others to help them something he never got during the past. This fight will probably parallel all might but all of this happening and I feel nothing all of it falls flat and I feel bad for izuku that's it.
Tumblr media
It was a chapter and considering how I hated previous writing decisions I was also gonna hate on the developed/expanded writing decisions either way

To the young student who said they would steal my eye, you're very funny, and did quite a good job at it.
Might I have it back with a phone number with it?

For how much Class 1B constantly outperforms Class 1A, not once has Super Genius Peincipal Nedzu ever adressed this with Aizawa.
You'd think someone as smart as him would see this glaring problem and pull Aizawa into a meeting to see what the hell is going on, but that's apparently asking too much.
Because Hori's gone so out of his way to paint Aizawa as a good teacher that having Nezdu acknowledge this fact would be retconning that.
You actually just brought this to my attention, but 1B outperforming 1A is supposed to pin blame entirely on the students. As much as 1A's failings aren't attributed to Aizawa, 1B's successes aren't attributed to Vlad King either. It's implied that it's the students and the students alone who make the difference, Aizawa and Vlad are often depicted as bystanders who simply observe and make comments here and there. They're not held responsible for their students' progress or lack thereof (Aizawa all but confirms this during the Sorts Festival).
And yeah, in case of the provisional licensing exam that's kind of true. All Bakugou had to do was not be a dick for like ten minutes. As awful of a teacher as Aizawa is, that is something he shouldn't have to teach especially considering that Bakugou's job at the time didn't require nearly as much effort as almost everyone else's.
(Todoroki's a little different as I've said before he only failed because Bakugou did and Hori couldn't have his golden boy be the only one to fail)
But the final exam is a completely different story. His decision to pair up Kaminari and Ashido was terrible. Neither one of them are very bright and they were going up against (possibly) the smartest creature on Earth. They were set up to fail. Why not pair one of them up with a classmate they could learn from and vice versa? Especially since that was the intent with pairing Izuku and Bakugou up, right? To have Bakugou learn from Izuku (and make Izuku do his job for him). Why did this only apply to them while almost all the other matchups were the complete opposite?
(Not to mention a lot of these issues could have easily been resolved earlier if Aizawa had just made the effort. Ashido and Kaminari can't think strategically? Give them exercises to help them. Yaoyorozu's struggling with self-esteem? Help her regain her confidence. Bakugou can't work with others? Attempt to rectify that instead of making it another student's problem to deal with. Instead he waited until an exam worth a good chunk of their grade)
We don't know how 1B was paired up, but I assume it was because Vlad saw their strengths and weaknesses and matched them accordingly while also taking the time to work with them beforehand. And that's why only one 1B student failed as opposed to 1A's five. Because Vlad took the time to improve them instead of just relying on kids being attacked by villains and logical ruses.
1B improves at a steadier rate because Vlad actually acts like a teacher and puts in the effort with them. Aizawa does neither

Another mini-rant:
So whenever a character is criticized, something I constantly see is someone claiming that the critic “doesn’t understand the character”. Now, a good chunk of the time, this is true. Sometimes people lack a fundamental understanding of a character. However, someone’s dislike of a character and their writing isn’t always because of a lack of understanding. It’s common for a critic to understand the narrative purpose of a character, their personality, motives, etc. while also having issue with how that character is actually written.
I wanna use Katsuki and Shota as examples.
Katsuki’s story is that he was born with a flashy and powerful quirk. Combine that with a “natural aptitude” for combat, and the boy’s developed a superiority complex that constantly shouts at him that he’s going to be the next top hero. He admires All Might for his unwavering strength. However, his superiority complex turns into an inferiority complex whenever his fragile ego is threatened. Izuku, as someone without a quirk, shouldn’t dare to offer him help as the perceived difference between the two in terms of physical strength is too great, hence why he gets offended whenever Izuku offers him help. Izuku’s mental fortitude is also a direct contradiction to what Katsuki believes, seeing as despite being physically weak, he still wants to be a hero. According to one of the Light Novels, Katsuki also doesn’t understand genuine kindness as he sees kindness simply as a tool to get whatever you want. In U.A, his confidence wavers seeing as he’s no longer as dominant as he once was, and it shatters when he gets kidnapped by the LoV. This is meant to be a turning point for him, to help him figure out what it truly means to be a hero.
This is pretty much what Katsuki’s character is supposed to be as designed by Hori. What causes me to criticize him so harshly though is how his journey’s actually written. I’ve got many posts on why I think Katsuki’s a terrible character, but in short, he faces no direct consequences for his actions that are meaningful and he hasn’t fulfilled his purpose as a character meant to grow (his moments of growth come out of nowhere rather than occur naturally).
Shota’s character revolves around trauma and hard work. He was bullied for a bit while at U.A and his quirk lacks offensive prowess meaning that he had to become a master H2H combatant. The crux of his character is how he reacts to the death of his friend Oboro. He becomes an isolated individual who takes his hero job extremely seriously. Becoming a teacher at U.A, he wishes to not have anyone experience what he has and his teaching style involves showing his students the field of heroics without rose tinted glasses. The problem comes in the form of his unhealthy habits not being called out. His expulsion game and “logical ruses” simply teach his students that they can’t trust him, his expulsions are a permanent stain on his students records (even if they are suspensions) which is almost a death sentence in Japan, his characterization’s wonky (keeping the abusive egotist and perverted gremlin around but immediately threatening expulsion to everyone else), and he displays hypocritical behavior (harping on All Might for having faves when he clearly has his faves too). The effects that his destructive tendencies have on others isn’t explored nor is it even touched upon. Instead, the narrative frames it as a positive thing.
In conclusion, one can criticize and dislike a character while also understanding the purpose of such characters. Bad writing can’t be excused because of the intentions of the author.

A brief write up MHA and Subverting Expectations:
So something MHA has a reputation for is “subverting expectations”. I put that in quotes because honestly I don’t see much of this. Yeah, there are some examples such as Ochako putting her dreams above her love life, but MHA is your pretty standard Shonan anime in terms of construction. However, that doesn’t stop Katsuki Stans from using this excuse to defend Katsuki. Apparently him not having his ass whopped, him not being called out, and him not being hated by any meaningful character is Hori simply “subverting expectations”.
Again, this would be fine if the development surrounding him was any good, but it’s not. The main thing lacking is the incentive TO change. Sure, Katsuki seeing how Izuku was chosen to have OFA was upsetting, but how does that really provide a catalyst for him to change? His goal’s the exact same, which is to be the number one hero, and that’s being jeopardized by Izuku’s newfound power. So where does him learning empathy come from? You know, save to win and win to save? As of right now, it seems Katsuki’s only saving to win to be at the top, whereas Izuku wishes to save to, well, save. He doesn’t suddenly develop basic empathy, it’s just that he found a new way to “win”. It comes off as weak.
Now I know a lot of antis want Katsuki to be brutally attacked to kickstart his development, but as much as I despise this lil shit, I don’t 100% agree with this sentiment. He definitely needs to be humbled in a fight, which could’ve been done during the Sports Festival with Shoto or have him fight Mirio, but most importantly he needs to have a “the reason you suck” speech delivered to him. He needs to have all his flaws blatantly pointed out and criticized. Izuku could give a much needed cathartic speech, Shota could actually do his job for once and detail all the ways in which his flaws would get him killed, and/or All Might could tell him his heart’s not in the right place. This’ll incentivize him to actually wanna develop instead of him seeing saving as another means of wining. Rather than having Katsuki act OOC only to revert back to his old self shortly after and retconing some of the reasons why Katsuki, Hori could’ve easily done this, but that would mean removing some of Katsuki’s plot armor and apparently that’s not allowed, writing be damned.

The thing about AFO is that I like his character for how petty he can be and how unwillingly human he is because he's fun in that way but also he's literally a predator and I hate him
For the record I think this is one of the things that makes Hori a good writer. If an author can make you like the supervillain while at the same time want to strangle them to death, "love to hate him, hate to love him" etc, it's a sign that they've wrote an interesting character and so they've done their job, imo

Horimiya doesn’t really focus on everyone’s career paths like usual hs manga does so here’s what I think everyone would do:
Miyamura: obviously inherit his parents shop
Hori: I feel like she’d just continue with her academics as long as she could since she’s good at studying. I could see her going into research or becoming a college professor.
Yuki: shes canonically not good at studying so it’s difficult. She’ll probably study something easy enough she could pass and get an easy office job.
Tooru: Whatever career his parents are in to get them that rich. Tbh he probably shoulders a lot of responsibility and expectation but he doesn’t like to show it. At least his relationship with his parents seem to be decent? From the wallet ep he at least looks up to his dad?
Sakura: she’d go for something difficult like medicine or engineering
Iura: he lives in a traditional style house so some career along those lines?
Yanagi: it’s difficult because we don’t know a lot about him, but I’d say he’d bounce around a lot of majors at first and feel uncertain even when he does settle on one
Remi: Entomology like her parents!!! (Ty @willsonlmt)
Sengoku: again, good at studying. He’ll probably follow in his dads footsteps (and try to go to the same college as Remi but she won’t be able to get in)

In your opinion in regards to the Sports Festival, which arc would you say had the most disappointing/ abysmal conclusion or just ?
Looking back through them, in my opinion, I personally do think the Sports Festival takes the cake imo.
It started out strongly enough. Yes, so many readers have brought to attention the flaws the whole concept of the Sports Festival, but it also was a good starting point to introduce us more of Izuku’s classmates and flesh them out.
We see a setup for Todoroki and we get to know more about him and his story, as well as setting up for a rivalry between him and Midoriya.
We get to see more of Uraraka, such as what drives her (having a sustainable job to help her parents back), and showcasing it’s great to rely on friends, but sometimes there’s battles you’ll have to learn to fight on your own.
We are introduced to interesting characters like Kendo, Testsutestsu, Monoma, and the rest of 1-B.
We also see more moments of the rest of 1-A like Ashido, Yaoyorozu, Iida, Ojiro, and of course Tokoyami, who seems to be the new, mysterious powerhouse.
We also see Midoriya on his absolute A-Game, relying on his wits alone to get through the obstacle courses! This was peak Midoriya in my opinion. Not just in him being successful in the festival, but him being human to the other competitors, particularly with Shinsou and Todoroki.
SO many characters with great potential and plot points to consider, and it got me to thinking, “Who’s actually going to win this?”
Oh, and Bakugou is just acting like an absolute dip**** throughout the arc, but who cares about that, right?
Well, apparently HORIKOSHI cared.
Bakugou had no impactful or actual significance to the story, just kept insisting“I’m gonna win! I’m gonna win!” And all of a sudden he wins the entire thing. All the while being an asshole to everyone around him. So the childish idiot gets his way instead of letting other more interesting characters to shine and Bakugou instead learns something from LOSING to someone other than Deku.
And I recall the first I got finished watching the arc, I thought, “…really? That’s how we’re finishing this? All these characters to focus or benefit from being in the spotlight or at least winning the tournament, and Hori decides to reward HIM? That’s pathetic.”
Anyway, back to my question, do you have an arc where you felt like this the most?
Hi @khonaker 👋,
The most disappointing arc to me was of course the Izuku Solo arc concluding with 1A vs Izuku and Bakugou's apology.
The solo arc seemed to be taking a tonal shift, seemed to be perfect opportunity to focus on Izuku again, seemed to be building up AFO again as an actual threat via Nagant explosion and hinting at DFO in places ("It's your turn," and "This path you have chosen is a thorny one.")
Then 1A vs Izuku, Bkg's joke of an apology and taking him back to U.A crapped all over it. I feel like I haven't gotten as excited over MHA since. Most of the recent arcs are a bunch of empty hype then a huge let down.
I'd also like to give my opinion on the Sports Festival arc specifically since you mentioned this one.
I also found it a huge let down with how it concluded by the very notes of how Shoto's quirk works he should have been able to stomp Bkg with just his ice. ❄️ But I'm getting ahead of myself.
Like you mentioned it fleshed out Izuku's classmates well. It set up a rival class in Class 1B and introduced Shinsou (personally I'd change a few things about him such as have him train prior to Aizawa's mentorship, have him actually be bullied in his backstory and narrowly miss out on entering the hero course by a couple of points.)
I'd change a few things with the one on one battles too because I feel like the Sports Festival would work better with a few shake ups.
Round One
First, Bakugou vs Shinsou and have Shinsou win. This would be Bakugou's pride getting the best of him because he would refuse advice from an 'extra' like Ojiro and pay the price for it.
I'd have Aoyama vs Midoriya. With Midoriya winning. This is to hint at the traitor reveal earlier, to build their bond earlier with their similar self harming quirks.
I'd have Mina vs Momo, just because I feel like they'd be an interesting match up. Momo is versatile and intelligent and Mina is, quite frankly an under used powerhouse and has a quirk that would counter creation. I feel like Momo should win and show off her smarts by creating something to counter Mina's acid. Plus it would build their friendship earlier.
I'd keep Kiri vs Tetsutetsu as it was in canon just because I liked that battle and their friendship that came from it. 🤣
I'd have Tokoyami vs Ibraha and have Tokoyami win.
And I'd keep Mei vs Iida as canon because I found that fight funny.
Then Sero vs Uraraka because that could also link into her growth with wanting to learn to fight hand to hand through failing to win against a more nimble Sero and a poor quirk match up. So Sero would win this.
I'd have Kaminari vs Todoroki with Todoroki winning because I feel like they would be an interesting match up. And Todoroki could similarly stomp him with his ice just like he did with Sero.
Round Two
Shinsou vs Midoriya with Midoriya winning, like how Midoriya's canon first battle went but in round 2 this time so it's more realistic that Shinsou impressed Aizawa and Midoriya being BAMF more - yes please.
Momo vs Sero with Momo winning, I feel like Momo would have to make lots and quickly against someone like Sero who is able to quickly restrain her. It would make for a good battle.
Todoroki vs Iida like canon, Iida gets far into the battle but loses against Todoroki.
Tokoyami vs Kirishima with Tokoyami winning and Kirishima being manly about it. I can see Dark Shadow and Kiri getting along and this would be a good opportunity for them to meet.
Round 3
Midoriya vs Todoroki and the famous "It's your power" moment, I'd have happen here. Along with Midoriya losing, and Todoroki winning
Momo vs Tokoyami, here I would build the foundation for Momo's confidence issues despite her intelligence. I'd have the battle be harder than canon for Tokoyami, but have her make a 'flash bomb' then falter under the pressure of the crowds watching her (maybe insecurity about the amount of skin she had to show, discomfort from the crowds leers) which enables Tokoyami to take her out of the ring. Here Tokoyami would win.
Final round.
I'd have Tokoyami vs Todoroki. Here, this would make sense to have Todoroki lose to a powerhouse like Tokoyami with his weakness being light - not cold. Here it would be realistic that Todoroki's hesitancy to use his fire - to create that light that Tokoyami is weak to - would cost him the match. Plus Tokoyami and Dark I could see being much more concerned for Todoroki than Bakugou was when he passed out.
Therefore in this version of events, Tokoyami (and Dark Shadow) accepting the gold medal with pride, Todoroki being pensive with silver and re-evaulating himself (he can't win every battle with just his mum's ice) and Momo being third (Midoriya breaking himself too much to fight her for third place.)
Let me know what you think of my thoughts and shake up in pairings :)
