Character Flaws vs Writing Flaws:
While catching up on some of the stuff people have commented/sent to me, I noticed someone mention how Katsuki being a bully is a flaw of his and that not every character needs to be a good person.
First of all, when did I ever say that a character has to be morally correct to be a good character? Some of my favorite characters are villains who’ve done worse things than Katsuki.
So what’s the difference between them and Katsuki?
Well, the villains have a reason for existing. Joker is meant to serve as a parallel to Batman, challenging his morals while also showing what an unhinged Batman could look like.
On a much lesser scale, despite his extremely limited screen time, Moonfish’s bloodlust, lack of sanity, and cannibalism serve two purposes in MHA: to showcase Fumikage’s power and to give the readers an example of what the heroes of this world have to deal with.
Katsuki’s flaws are meant to show the flaws of a world that values raw power over morals, but he fails at this. The reason why? His flaws are never allowed to be flaws.
Katsuki’s aggressive and hostile nature should have him struggling to make friends, yet he has the two pillars of 1-A, that being Ejiro and Denkias described by Hori, immediately befriend him with no issues. His inability to empathize with others should have people wanting to steer away from him, but his instead 1-A loves him, Eri loves him despite being the last person who would, and anyone who doesn’t love him is seen as being in the wrong.
Katsuki is meant to be a big fish in a little pond, someone whose ego isn’t challenged until a certain point, and the Battle Trials were meant to show this. While yes, Katsuki has a mini-breakdown over the fact that he’s no longer in a class of people with weaker quirks, he has no issue claiming a spot as a Top Dog and he still continues to demean the people around him.
Katsuki’s aggressiveness is meant to be both a flaw and an asset. His aggressive nature is what motivates him to defeat the villain, but it’s supposed to cause him to have a one track mind when it comes to hero work. Rescue, teamwork, all of that is ignored by him to fight the big bad. His ego caused everyone to have a tougher time during the USJ, but is that ever touched upon? Nope. It’s just ignored. When Katsuki saved Kyouka, there was no buildup to it. It just happens. We never see him struggle with teamwork because everyone else follows him like a lost puppy.
Meanwhile, Izuku is meant to be Katsuki’s parallel in this department. He’s meant to showcase why too much selflessness isn’t good while also showing that a hero is more than just their raw power. Problem is, Izuku gets completely shat on no matter what he does. He goes after a villain to protect U.A? Gets criticized. Does his best to work with Katsuki? Gets blamed despite it solely being an issue on Katsuki’s end. Does everything perfectly? Nope, still not enough. Compared to Izuku, who always seems to be in the wrong, Katsuki’s placed as this paragon of heroic virtues despite the fact both characters are supposed to be two halves of a whole. They’re supposed to learn from one another. Problem is, Katsuki’s flaws are always ignored while Izuku’s positive traits are demeaned.
Finally, Katsuki being a bully is supposed to serve as a starting point for his character. He’s meant to grow and develop as a human being. Again, he doesn’t, or at least he doesn’t do so in an organic way. He never suffers consequences for his behavior, he’s constantly propped up and coddled instead of criticized, and he’s given some heroic moments despite there being no buildup to them. In the span of a month he goes from nearly killing Izuku to risking his life for him. Where the hell did that come from? Honestly, I wouldn’t care if Katsuki being a bully is his sole purpose for existing, but he’s meant to be more than that. This is supposed to be a well developed and fully fleshed out character who grows from his selfishness and is meant to show that anyone can be a hero, no matter their starting point. But when the development is crap and he hardly changes outside of some OOC moments, then his flaws cease to be flaws that he’s meant to overcome. Instead MHA treats it as him being quirky and misunderstood.
In conclusion, you just can’t present something as a character flaw and expect it to serve as an excuse as to why a character exhibits said flaw. You have to think of the following: what purpose does this flaw serve? Is it meant to be used to teach a lesson? Does it set something in motion, whether it be the development of this character, another character, or does the flaw cause the character’s downfall? The only thing Katsuki’s flaws does right is that they set up Izuku’s story, which again would be fine if that’s Katsuki’s purpose, but it’s not. Him being a bully isn’t something that he overcomes in a natural way. His redemption story is the equivalent of filling things out of a checklist without being fleshed out. Every time he screws up, it’s never treated as a screw-up. Oh he failed the hero license exam? Well so did Shoto so he’s not unique there, and the proctors suck hid dick even while he’s “failing”. Him being the reason for 13’s injuries? Never brought up.
Katsuki’s flaws don’t piss me off because they are flaws, but because the writing of his character IS so deeply flawed despite being a centralized character in the story.
Oh, and as always, someone can dislike a character for whatever reason they might have. If people don’t like Katsuki because he’s a bully, then they have every right to. What I wrote is a response as to why I think Katsuki’s a shit character and how it’s not because of his flaws themselves, but how Hori goes about writing these flaws.

Ok, so I was thinking to myself and I realized that Mezou Shoji is such an unsung hero in 1-A. Bro’s single-handedly kept the class alive at several points in the story and really deserves more credit.
Here’s a list of things of some of the things he’s done:
1. Snagged half his classmates in the USJ. If it weren’t for him, 1-A couldn’t have destroyed the door and Tenya wouldn’t never gotten to U.A in time
2. Saved Izuku from Himiko.
3. Helped calm down Dark Shadow by carrying Izuku to them.
4. Held out the longest against Nine which allowed Katsuki and Izuku to advance and used his body to shield the two children.
5. Managed to calm down a group of mutant protesters with the power of empathy alone.
Mezou needs more love. Dude’s such a great guy and an interesting character.

Ok, so I know I wasn’t tagged but I wanna add my own ideas to this thread:
So I really like Overhaul. He’s a huge scumbag, but the perfect level of evil that makes him menacing to watch onscreen. He’s my third favorite MHA villain behind Twice and Moonfish, is in my Top 10 favorite MHA characters list, and is one my Top 10 favorite villains of all time. However, there are some things that I’d change about him to truly make him shine
1. Show off his intelligence more: people don’t realize this, but via feats, Overhaul is one of the smartest characters in MHA, easily being Top Two. This is the man that is largely responsible for keeping the Yakuza alive, the man that managed to manipulate people into his cause, and is a solid strategist. What really pushes him towards the top though is that he’s managed to do something only one other person has done before via science (Dr. Garaki); successfully enter the field of quirk genetics. Not only was he able to extract Eri’s quirk factor from her blood alone, but he’s able to go further beyond that and make it so that it was bestowed upon non-living objects. Not only THAT, but he was able to alter the way the quirk works. Normally rewind rewinds everything about its target. Overhaul managed to biologically engineer the quirk to the point where it specifically only targeted someone’s quirk factor. AFO, the guy with a 6/6 S+ intelligence, didn’t know how to alter the properties of rewind or the rest of his quirks. At best he was able to combine them. Dr Garaki, the only other person besides AFO with an intelligence stat of 6/6 S+ and the only other person who is experienced with quirk genetics, hasn’t shown the ability to imbue inanimate objects with quirks or alter how a quirk works. Overhaul is a genius and should’ve taken the place of the MLA as Japan’s biggest threat.
2. Change his motives: Overhaul’s motive is to remove quirks so the Yakuza can come into power. That’s a basic, but solid motive for someone like him. However, the rest of his motives suck. He sees quirks as a disease…despite having arguably one of the strongest quirks in the series. Instead of having him go “quirks are cooties” and all, just keep it as him wanting to eliminate everyone else’s quirks so that no one can challenge him. It makes far more sense for a guy like him.
3. Involve him in the story more: honestly, this is where I begin to steer far away from canon. If it were up to me, Dr. Garaki would’ve been the main villain with Overhaul being the second villain. These are two men who are made all the more dangerous due to their incredible minds. They would parallel Izuku fantastically as just like him, their biggest assets are their minds. This is especially true for Garaki as the man can’t even walk. All his quirk does is halve his aging. Everything else he’s done, such as create Nomu, is solely because of his unrivaled intellect. In a similar vein, while Overhaul’s quirk does make him a threat, it’s his mind that makes him so much more dangerous. Blowing someone up with a matter manipulation quirk is pretty standard. Rebuilding someone is more complicated, especially when he’s somehow also able to bring them back from the dead too. However, assimilating yourself with someone else while managing to copy their powers too takes some real brain power. What was stopping Overhaul from pulling a AFO and yoinking quirks? He even has the advantage of not having to kill anyone/remove someone’s quirk. He could steal a strand of hair and copy someone’s quirk if he’s interested in snagging one without raising suspicion. If written right, he could’ve been a far better antagonist than AFO.
At the end of the day, Overhaul has some immense potential that could let writers make him into a far more dangerous villain than AFO and Tomura ever were in, but sadly canon kinda made him a one off character.
Also, unrelated, but I’m sure Overhaul can copy OFA by altering his DNA to match one of the users or he could just yoink the individual quirks from the main quirk and power them up via other ways to mimic the properties OFA would bestow upon the individual quirks and himself in general. He might be able to cheat the system.
Alot of you guys here are working on your own MHA rewrite. So here's my question
How would you guys rewrite Overhaul in your story and also, would you guys still include Eri or completely remove her from the narrative. It's impossible to have Overhaul without Eri. Would he still be imprisoned and if so, after the prison break arc in S6 of MHA how would you guys go about handling him.
Overhaul is a hideous, diabolical and a greedy monster with zero moral compass. A true villain that MHA never deserved. Heck, shigaraki should've taken down notes on how to create fear, terror and rule with an iron hand from Overhaul.

If you had the opportunity to have another character besides Shoto (fuck Bakugou, he wasn’t a rival) as a rival for the series, who would you choose and how would you go about with it? Another character that has been talked about as a potential good rival for Izuku or an unconventional choice? Cause I have mine, but I have to work some details out before making it work for my story.
Either Neito or Tenya for sure, leaning more towards Neito. The symbolism’s already there. I guess I’d have Neito lose to Izuku in the Sports Festival, replacing Hitoshi’s round with this. Neito tries to copy Izuku’s quirk, but freaks out mentally when he can’t. With Izuku not wanting to use his quirk or else he’d break fingers for no reason, the fight would be a quirkless one. Izuku wins, and Neito asks him why he didn’t use his quirk. Izuku mentions how his quirk breaks his body and how he needs to rely on other methods of victory until he can get it under control. You’d think Neito would get upset, but he doesn’t, mentioning how he himself can’t rely solely on his quirk either due to the fact he has to touch someone to use it and he only has five minutes with whatever quirk he has. Once the fight’s over, Neito tells Izuku that the next time they fight it’ll be to test how far they’ve grown.

Ngl, this is actually very cute. This comes from the comedic MHA spin-off series “SMASH”. What I like about this is that Momo clearly admires Izuku and is genuinely curious as to why he’s so stressed out. When he hears his answer, it helps humanize him in her eyes, and not in a bad way. Her admitting that an insecure mind is troublesome is her relating to Izuku, and her being happy reads like a “you get me” sorta thing. She’s not alone in her struggles. I really wish we would’ve seen them interact more in the main series.

You know, as much as I wish Hori developed a lot of characters better, one good thing that comes out of it is that people can make head-canons about them and they can’t be refuted.
For example: We’ve never seen the limits of Yui Kodai’s quirk. All we know is that it doesn’t affect living creatures and that to use it on an object, she has to have touched it at one point. I could say that she could chuck a moon-sized rock at someone and no one can tell me I’m wrong 😂.

Jesus Christ, the Pro's twiddling their thumbs and sitting on their asses while Izuku runs himself ragged makes me so mad everytime I think about it.
They see this literal child pulling himself out of school, working through injuries, and going without sleep and food... and don't bother objecting or lifting a finger to stop him.
Then they have the nerve to tell him to rest ONLY because he's their best shot in stopping AFO and Shigaraki. Like I get what they're saying, but pressuring him like this is only going to make him push himself harder.
And then on top of all of that, a fucking bath and nap are what cures Izuku 😂. It's so bad.
PS: And then Midnight and Aizawa sit on their asses and twiddle their thumbs as Blackwhip goes on a rampage. Ochako puts herself in danger trying to help Izuku, and she gets praised for this. If it were Izuku, I guarantee you he would have gotten in trouble.
Now, I do think the bath thing is a cultural thing. Baths in Japan are often seen as a means of relaxation, so I can see what Hori was going for.
However, everything else is spot on. These pro heroes were watching a child utterly destroy himself without offering any sort of aid.

I will say one good thing about the PLF War arc is that Aizawa FINALLY realizes how much of an asshole he was to Izuku after hearing him stick up for him.
I was like damn, so you KNEW how unfair you were being to Izuku up until this point?
Bro that makes him even worse cause how has he not apologized yet 💀

Alright, I’m bored again so I’m going to rank all of the arcs from best to worst:
Great:
1. Hero Killer Arc: This arc and number 2 on this list proves that MHA had such potential. Watching Izuku grow and his efforts/impact on other people being acknowledged was great to see. We’ve got fantastic growth for the three main characters and a very good antagonist(despite some issues I have with Stain’s goal). Best of all, no Katsuki.
2. Shie Hissaki Arc: another great arc with a lot of great fights and characters. Watching Izuku vs Overhaul was thrilling and being introduced to The Big 3 and some cool pro heroes was a treat. There are some issues I have with this arc, such as how Overhaul’s motivations suck (he sees quirks as cooties when he literally has the best quirk in Japan) and that some characters could’ve been developed more (I would’ve loved to see more from the Eight Bullets and Nejire), but it was overall a good experience. And again, no Katsuki.
3. USJ Arc: Other than Katsuki’s dumbass endangering everyone and not getting called out for it, I had a blast with this arc. Solid character interactions all around and a fantastic fight to end it all off.
4. U.A Festival Arc: Gentle was a breath of fresh air in terms of villains and I really enjoyed his fight with Izuku. This would’ve been number 3 if not for the fact Izuku gets yelled at for doing his job and Katsuki gets another point added to him being a Gary Stu by revealing yet another talent he has that he shouldn’t.
Good:
5. Entrance Exam Arc: It was a solid setup for getting to know Izuku, All Might, and the world of MHA. It was one of the few times that the narrative wasn’t sucking on Katsuki’s dick too.
6. Forest Training Arc: The final arc that I’d consider good. We’ve got some solid moments here. Fumikage going berserk, Mezou carrying everyone to safety being introduced to the main LoV members, Izuku vs Muscular, and the character of Kota were nice additions to the series. We even got to see some of 1-B, even if it wasn’t much.
Alright:
7: Meta Liberation Arc: Now we’re in the area where these arcs aren’t bad, but they clearly exist just to set things up. This is an arc that would’ve been fantastic if it wasn’t for the fact it led nowhere. Yes, a good chunk of the LoV received fantastic development but the MLA were so lame, and by that, I mean they’re introduced here only to serve as canon fodder in the next arc.
8. Pro Hero Arc: I don’t really have any complaints about this arc nor do I have anything to say outside the fact Endeavor’s fight with the High End was pretty neat.
9. Hideout Raid Arc: only reason this isn’t in the “good” or “great “ category is cause it was centered around Katsuki. All Might vs AFO was a fantastic conclusion to the first saga of MHA and I liked seeing the rescue squad in action… even though Katsuki made it a pain to be rescued.
10. U.A traitor Arc: I don’t really care about this arc for two reasons, one is that the foreshadowing leading up to this moment sucked and that we never really got to spend enough time with Yuuga to care much about the reveal.
Bad:
11. Endeavor Agency Arc: Now we’re at the part where I dislike all of these arcs. This is an arc that Katsuki ruins due to him being a shitty character. Him yelling at a trauma victim to stop talking about her trauma in her own damn house was obnoxious. Katsuki didn’t need to be in this arc whatsoever. Remove him and this arc would’ve had a much higher rating for actually tackling Endeavor’s character and relationship with his family in a solid manner.
12. Sports Festival Arc: The Sports Festival Arc would’ve been fantastic it is weren’t for certain points. First off, this is where the Katsuki dick sucking really began. Shota acts like a mouthpiece for Katsuki even though the people booing him were right in the fact that he could’ve ended the fight easily. He also wasn’t taking Ochako seriously at all, literally announcing “it’s time to get serious” once her strat failed. He should’ve lost against Shoto too seeing as Shoto’s ice is a direct counter to his quirk. Finally, Katsuki had no right listening in on Shoto and Izuku’s conversation and demanding anything from Shoto, a point that’s never addressed. Secondly, all the Gen Ed kids were assholes for no reason. Who in their right mind sees 1-A going through a traumatic experience as them seeing themselves better than everyone else? Yeah, Katsuki gave off a bad impression but he’s just one guy. Finally, this was the arc that introduced Hitoshi, a failed attempt by Hori at tackling the idea of prejudice. Instead of someone bitter at the world for being screwed by society, we got an entitled bitch.
13. Remedial Course Arc: as much as I love Gang Orca, this arc served no purpose. Katsuki gives off a line that feels undeserved seeing as he’d go off undermining people afterwards but this arc’s biggest flaw was that it really didn’t have to exist.
Crap:
14. Battle Trial Arc: Now we’re in the really bad arcs. The Battle Trial Arc is once again ruined by Katsuki. Despite being told by All Might not to fire that explosion, he still does. Yes, he aimed it in a way that it wouldn’t kill Izuku, but the fact that All Might was worried that it could’ve killed Izuku meant that firing that thing in a narrow hallway could’ve seriously injured him. Katsuki suddenly switching up his fighting style despite having no formal training’s the first instance of his plot armor showing up, with the second being that he wasn’t disqualified. Katsuki being afraid of 1-A’s potential went nowhere cause he ended up winning the Sports Festival and would undermine 1-A constantly. Finally, Izuku telling Katsuki about his “borrowed power” was dumb. Everything else was fine though, but not enough to make up for Katsuki’s flaws.
15. Paranormal Liberation Arc: Would’ve been much higher but there are several glaring flaws. Izuku defending Endeavor’s character was one of those moments where I audibly groaned. Katsuki’s plot armor kicks it up into turbo gear by having him have a quirk awakening, surviving an attack that should’ve destroyed his stomach with zero consequences, and giving him an unearned “my body moved on its own” moment.
16. Quirk Apprehension Exam: This arc introduces Shota… and makes all of his flaws known to the audience. I have several posts going over why he sucks and this is the episode that shows it all off. Only thing keeping this from being ranked lower is cause we were also introduced to 1-A.
Shit:
17. Star and Stripe Arc: We’re close to the bottom of the barrel now. Hori introduces a character he never foreshadowed once despite Star and Stripe being the top pro hero of another country and immediately kills her. It does nothing to the plot either. “Oh but it nerfed Tomura” that’s what Hori tells us. Do we actually see what quirks Tomura lost? In fact, after this, his quirk evolves to counter Eraserhead’s. At best all this arc did was stall for time.
18. Dark Hero Arc: what a waste of potential. This would’ve been ranked lower if it wasn’t for Ochako’s speech, Izuku vs Muscular 2, and Izuku helping that fox lady. What makes it shit though? First off, Izuku suddenly unlocks the rest of his quirks. Secondly, 1-A thinks that the best way to get Izuku back is to show up, beat him up, and then kidnap him back to U.A. Third, the pros were offering Izuku no support. He was hungry, tired, and dirty, yet not once did any of them think “hey, if we’re using him as bait to draw AFO out, maybe we should keep him healthy so he can help us once we ambush AFO”. Fourth, Katsuki’s role in this arc. He demeans Izuku in front of his friends, daring to compare Izuku’s desire to protect everyone to him having an ego, and then gives an absolutely poorly timed and terrible apology. God this arc sucks.
19. Joint Training Arc: Oh look, another Katsuki dick sucking session. Sorry, but 1-B does not redeem how awful this arc is. Katsuki’s praised to the moon and back, insults his classmates and the former OFA users with no repercussions, and earns yet another victory. “But he saved Kyouka” but not out of being a good person. He only wanted the victory. Maybe this could’ve been a good step if Katsuki’s arc wasn’t Hori’s attempt at speedrunning a character arc. Yui getting beat by Ochako so effortlessly will forever bother me as one of Yui’s 5 fans (this girl has a 5/6 A+ skill stat, which is higher than Ochako’s). Also, Hitoshi’s here, but he’s actually tolerable here so I’m not going to rant about him.
Super Shit:
20. Provisional License Arc: This is going to be a short write cause there’s not much to be said. It’s yet another Katsuki dick sucking session where the narrative wanks him off. Then there’s Kacchan vs Deku 2, which if you’ve read any of my blogs, you know that this was once my least favorite moment of the series. If you wanna know why this moment was so crap, I have dozens of posts about why it does. And yes, I said it was once my least favorite moment. What’s to come somehow managed to beat it in terms of sheer crap.
I can’t think of any singular phrase to describe how terrible this arc is:
21. Final War Arc: How ironic that the end of the series is also at the end of this list. Where do I even begin? Well, there’s Miruko being the subject of someone’s gore fetish for the third time, AFO overstaying his welcome, Izuku hardly even doing anything, Tomura getting BS power ups up the wazoo, AFO and Izuku never meeting, the mutant portion being handled poorly, Dabi somehow gaining a power up that ultimately served no purpose, and Ochako and Himiko’s portion also being wrapped up poorly. However, what really makes this arc the bottom of the barrel is the dick sucking. Somehow, Katsuki’s able to last the longest against Tomura. Somehow Katsuki manages to score a hit just because he scared Tomura. Somehow Katsuki managed to survive having his heart, arm, and chest blown out via amateur surgery with absolutely no injuries despite being dead for like 5 min without a damn heart and heart surgery not being an answer for a broken arm. And finally, Katsuki gets yet another quirk power up and is now able to compete with AFO. This is THE arc where it’s clear Hori wanted Katsuki to be the protagonist and god damn I will argue that The Room and My Immortal is better than this clusterfuck of an arc.

Ok, so I made an error. He does have a stat of 5/6 A+, which does put him ahead of most of 1-A. However, this ties him with Shota, Tenya, and Minoru. Shota’s a dumbass as I’ve explained in numerous posts, and while both Tenya and Minoru are smart, they’re nowhere near Overhaul’s level. Overhaul successfully ran a massive underground empire powerful enough that even AFO had to recognize his abilities and he somehow figured out how to duplicate quirks by using someone’s DNA. Not only that, but he ALSO figured out how to infuse inanimate objects with quirks and figured out how to alter a quirk in such a way that its properties were changed. He somehow found a way to make rewind ONLY target quirk factors rather than the entire object hit by the bullets he made. That should put him up to the level of Garaki, the only other person shown to be knowledgeable enough to alter and copy quirks only using the power of science.
Also, he only has a power stat of 3/6 C. The guy who can manipulate matter has a lower power rating than Stain (whose quirk gives him no boosts to his offense), Katsuki (whose quirk struggled with Ejiro’s hardening form while a bullet managed to chip him), Ejiro (whose quirk doesn’t come near the power of overhaul in terms of power), and is tied with Shota (who also doesn’t have a quirk that boosts his offenses).
If my last post about the stat ratings didn’t convince you that Hori had no idea what he was doing when he was assigning them, then hopefully this post does.
Can we talk about how Overhaul, the guy with the intelligence to not only know how to harvest someone’s quirk from their DNA but also is capable of infusing non-organic materials with quirks, is ranked lower in intelligence than a good chunk of 1-A?

I want whatever Hori was on when he thought up of those stats, because they make absolutely no sense with his characterization.
Izuku's 1/5 in nearly everything despite being built like a brick house, being 1A's defacto field leader, and having OFA.
Mic has 5/5 intelligence and All Might breaks the damn scale at 6/5, but they're relegated to being the village idiots of the story.
Overhaul MD engineered Quirk erasing bullets and is somehow less smarter than most of 1A.
I'm pretty sure Bakugou has high stats across the board because of fucking course he would 🙄
The stats are complete BS. I have a post that goes deep into why they suck.
Sadly you are right about Katsuki. He has a 5/5 A in everything except technique which is a 5/5 A+. IMO the only stats of his that should be an A level are his power and speed. He hasn’t shown that he deserves to have such a high intelligence and skill stat.

Can you do a text post about jurou having arguably the strongest quirk
Sure 😊. Kyouka’s in my top three favorite MHA characters so this is something that’s been spiraling in my head for the longest time 😂.
Now, I wouldn’t say it is THE strongest quirk out there, but if written well, Kyouka would make for one of the most terrifying ambush fighters that could take out threats that people like Katsuki couldn’t.
As written, Kyouka uses her quirk in two ways during combat: to scout and to fire shockwaves from her support gear. Her requesting support gear that allows her to turn a short ranged quirk into a long ranged one is a genius move on her end as it covers her biggest weakness. However, unless she’s away from her support gear, she always fights at a range. Again, this is smart when going up against opponents that would normally outrange her, but I believe that she’s at her best in close quarters combat.
Right off the bat, let me say that there seemingly is no limit in regards to what Kyouka can plug her jacks into. She’s plugged them into flesh, concrete, stone, steel, etc. Canon has yet to show her failing to stick her jacks into something.
Secondly, the plug part of her jacks are exactly the same size as the jacks from a regular earphone. I’m sure if you’ve all seen what an earphone jack looks like in real life, so imagine getting stabbed by those things. For most people, those things would puncture through a lot of flesh and muscle to reach some vital areas, such as bone, organ, and vein/artery systems. Keep this in mind as you continue reading cause it’s important.
Now, let’s talk about how a concussion’s made. When someone receives a concussion, it’s because their brain’s received a jolt, bump, or blow that causes it to rattle inside the skull. The impact doesn’t even need to be strong enough to break/damage bone, as long as that brain’s rattled enough, you’re getting a concussion. When it comes to being dealt damage, the entire body functions in a similar way. If a vital organ/system receives enough of a jolt, they’ll collapse and stop working. What protects us are our bone and muscle, but what if someone can bypass all of that protection and deliver a small shock to the body? This is where Kyouka’s quirk truly begins to showcase its strength.
Katsuki has failed to immediately knock out people with even his strongest explosions. Why? Because that person usually has a strong enough defense system to absorb the impact, whether it be a strength enhancing quirk or a hardening quirk. Kyouka has knocked out people without any effort just by stabbing them with her jacks and sending a small shock through them. Sure, it was done as a gag, but in terms of feats, this still counts. She’s been able to knock people unconscious without even trying, so now let’s imagine what would happen if she unleashed her full power into someone’s body. Without the aid of her support gear and just by plugging her jacks into the ground, she’s been shown to be able to crack cement, push back Nine (a guy who was near Tomura’s power level for a while), and send both debris and people flying. If a small jolt is enough for her to knock someone unconscious, then by amping her output by a slight amount, she could send someone into a coma and/or cause several of the person’s internal organs to fail. If she was to unleash a jolt using all of her power, she’d blow them up from the inside.
The only way TO counter her quirk once she’s got her jacks in you would be to have a body capable of withstanding such great force from within. So far, we’ve seen almost no one who can claim such a feat. Ejiro, the representative of what a hardening quirk can do, would drop like a fly to Kyouka. Even in “unbreakable” form, her jacks can pierce him. His quirk also only hardens his skin and some of his muscles, not the rest of the body. The fact he can still feel pain and bleed is proof of this. He may be able to tank an assault from her if she uses her support gear to fire a shockwave, but if she fires one inside his body, he’s done. She can also potentially knock out someone who’d otherwise resist her attacks by aiming her jacks at a more vulnerable area such as the heart or the head.
Now, Kyouka does have some weaknesses. First, she would have to inject her jacks into someone in order to quickly dispose of them. If someone could prevent her from tagging them with her jacks, Kyouka’s going to have a tougher time with swiftly taking them out. In addition, her jacks aren’t invincible, as shown by how AFO managed to take one out during his fight against her. However, between having her support gear and being able to cause massive earthquakes without them, she could knock a person around until she can close the distance. She can also take a page from Shota’s book and rely on ambush tactics. With her super hearing, she’s able to hear people’s heartbeats. Give her some proper training and she’ll be able to use that to determine if a target has spotted her or when they’ve relaxed to the point that they’ll be slower to react.
If Hori wanted to write her as such, Kyouka could be one of the most deadly assassins in the entire series, being able to take out even those who can withstand numerous explosions to the face by Katsuki. She’d a force to be reckoned with if she was allowed to use her abilities to their fullest potential. Sadly, as a side character, she’s shoved to the backseat so we’ll never get to see what a beast this girl can truly be.

MHA and Hori’s Stat Rankings
Ok, so if there’s any post of mine that someone can call nitpicky, it’ll be this one cause what I’m about to talk about doesn’t really affect the story of MHA in any meaningful way. Rather, it’s just going over some supplemental information that really makes no sense.
So hardcore MHA fans and/or frequent visitors of the MHA wiki know of the Ultra Archive Book and the Ultra Analysis Book. In these books, various characters are given rankings based on several stats: power, speed, technique, and intelligence/wits being the stats shared between the two books. Cooperation, the final stat in the Archive Book, was replaced in the Analysis Book by each character having a humorous stat that tells the reader a bit about them. Denki’s signature stat is Friend (6/6 S), Izuku’s is Presence (1/6 E), etc. In addition, the Analysis Book is slightly more in depth when ranking stats. Each letter has their own tiers, either being positive, neutral, or negative. For example, Izuku has a power score of 5/6 A+ while Ejiro has a power score of 5/6 A- and Mezou has flat score of 5/6 A.
The way the stats are written are easy to understand. However, when you compare the stats of some characters to one another and what we’re actually shown them being capable of doing, a lot of it doesn’t add up. Here’s I’ll be breaking down some examples of what I mean.
Power:
Perhaps the biggest examples of this area being bullshit are Shota, Hitoshi, Stain, and Tooru’s strength rankings. Throughout both books, all four characters have had a consistent power ranking, with only Stain’s really changing from a 3/6 C to a 4/5 B and Hitoshi changing from a 1/6 E to a 2/6 D. Meanwhile, Tooru has a power ranking of 2/6 D and Shota’s is 3/5 C. However, keep in mind that neither character has any sort of offensive abilities granted to them by their quirks. Stain’s is a paralysis quirk, Tooru’s makes her invisible, Hitoshi brainwashes people, and Shota’s shuts down quirks. You can make an argument for Tooru being able to refract/reflect light based quirks, but that’s something she learned later on, so keep that in mind. Meanwhile, Izuku in the Ultra Archive Book, has a power stat of 1/6 E. Now, it is basing his strength off the fact that he’s unable to properly use OFA without breaking himself, but there is absolutely no way he should be weaker than Shota, Stain, and Tooru in the power department. Izuku is at peak human strength. You can definitely say that both Shota and Stain are as well, but Tooru isn’t, struggling to do a pull-up. Despite that, she’s a tier higher than him. Speaking of Stain and Shota, you can argue that their weapons are also accounted for when Hori gave them their ratings, but that makes no sense in Shota’s case cause his capture scarf can be cut by a knife. As for Stain, his blades haven’t been shown to have any special properties, so how the hell do his blades alone allow him to beat Mina’s 3/6 C+ power. Mina’s acid melts through stone and steel with ease. Stain’s swords have nothing on that. Speaking of Mina, her power stat’s somehow lower than Mashirao’s. Sure Mashirao’s tail is pretty strong, but his best feat in the strength department is cracking concrete while Mina’s disintegrated steel with no effort. Himiko Toga also gets screwed over in terms of a power stat, being a 1/6 E in both books. Despite not having an offensive quirk at the time of her ranking, she has shown off superior strength than Tooru and Hitoshi by pining Izuku. Sure, a successful pin does involve technique, but a twig isn’t going to be able to pin a peak level human without some sort of strength. Another character who’s rated lower than they should be is Tsuyu in the Ultra Archive Book, also being a 1/6 E despite her quirk granting her enhanced strength. This was rectified in the Ultra Analysis Book with her getting bumped up to a 3/6 C, but there’s still no way Shota, a man with no superhuman abilities, should have an equal power ranking to Tsuyu, who could probably shatter a skull with a kick. Finally, there’s Dabi, who’s always thrown in the 4/6 B category. While he might not be able to use his quirk for extended periods of time, the fact that his flames are confirmed to be hotter than Endeavor’s means he deserves to be ranked higher. There’s no way you’re telling me Katsuki’s explosions are stronger than Dabi’s flames. I can also ramble about how Kyouka’s quirk is arguably one of the strongest quirks in the series but that’s for another time. To conclude, the power rankings are wonky. Peak human characters are either ranked lower than characters they should realistically beat in terms of power or are ranked higher than they should be, and characters who should be ranked higher like Mina and Dabi aren’t.
Speed:
Arguably the most consistent stat in this series is speed. There’s really only one example I wanna talk about and that’s Mezou. Mezou has a low speed ranking of 2/6 D in both books despite having some of the best performances when it comes to raw speed. He was able to save several of his classmates at the USJ before Kurogiri could warp them all away, he easily intercepted and backhanded Himiko (someone who both Shota and Izuku struggled to keep up with even when the latter was using 5% of OFA), he ran away from a full powered Dark Shadow, and he successfully countered a full barrage of Pony’s horn missiles with only his fists. Despite this, his speed stat is lower than everyone else I’ve mentioned when it should be higher.
Technique:
Easily the most flawed stat here. For starters, Hitoshi in the Ultra Archive Book has an equal technique stat to Izuku, the guy who is able to counter people by reading their body moments, and Shoto, who has been trained by the number two hero. Mind you, all we’ve seen Hitoshi do is mind control people and flail pathetically against Izuku during the Sports Festival. Katsuki, who has a 5/6 A and 5/6 A+ stat in technique, has not received any form of training and has only fought people weaker than him prior to U.A, so he also shouldn’t have a higher skill stat than the son of the number 2 pro hero. Dabi, the guy who managed to mimic the special move Shoto had to take time to learn and has the ability to mimic all of Endeavor’s moves, only has a technique stat of 2/6 D. Mezou and Jurota, the characters Hori said were the strongest characters of the first years when it came to fighting without quirks, both possess lower technique stats than Katsuki. Yui Kodai, the girl with 5/6 A+ technique, somehow got easily defeated by Ochako, who is a tier lower than her in technique. Yes, she got a surprise attack on Reiko, but Yui should’ve been able to jump her after Reiko went down. Mashirao and Itsuka are both martial artists but they both only have technique stats in the B ranks, which is lower than most of their classmates. Pretty much Hori’s rankings when it comes to technique is either constantly ignored and/or makes absolutely no sense.
Intelligence/wits:
For this section, I wanna mainly focus on Minoru. Minoru’s intelligence stat is currently ranked at 5/6 A+. Now, I’m not saying Minoru’s not smart, because we’ve seen that he is smart, but his intelligence stat’s a bit too high. For starters, Kyouka scored higher than him on the midterms despite only having a maximum intelligence score of 4/5 B. In addition, he’s ranked above Tenya, who had the second highest score on the midterms. He’s also tied with Mei, someone who Power Loader described as a “one of a kind genius”. Now, some of you might be saying that Minoru might be better at working on his feet, hence his higher intelligence stat, but Izuku’s able to accurately read an entire battlefield and scored fourth on the midterms, blowing Minoru out of the water in these instances. Moving away from Minoru, Power Loader, the head of the Support department, only has his intellect at a 2/6 D according to the Ultra Analysis book. That’s lower than the majority of 1-A and 1-B’s intelligence stats. How is the head of the support department going to have such a poor intelligence rating? Dabi, who once again is a prodigy, was the only one who had suspicions about Hawks’ loyalty, and is capable of instantly mimicking moves that Shoto and Endeavor had to take time to develop, only has an intellect of 3/6 C, which is crazy to me. Hori really has no idea what he’s doing with regards to these stats.
TL;DR: Hori’s stat assignments are bullshit and need to be drastically reworked.

One thing that I absolutely love is how in those god awful light novels, the other characters tell other people how Bakugou's totally the best even though he could go kick rocks.
"Forgiving was just a small deed for Midoriya." Kirishima, after being explicitly told that Izuku was a victim of Quirk related bullying at the hands of Bakugou. Then right after, Bakugou's behavior gets them kicked out of where they're studying... and Bakugou blames Izuku for this.
"Katsuki isn't Katsuki without his bad words." Uraraka, after a kid tells her that the way Bakugou treated her at the Sports Festival was wrong. She says he was taking her seriously, even though he clearly and explicitly wasn't.
*Also, Bakugou literally referred to people helping others solely out of kindness as "sickening", and explicitly compares his relationship with Izuku to Shoto and Endeavor's relationship... so take that however you want.
Oh god, the light novels and OVAs somehow make MHA worse. Remember how Shota paired Eri, a trauma victim, with Katsuki so that Katsuki could learn how to behave around kids? Or how about when Shota threw an entire building on his students as one of his ‘logical ruses’? Or maybe you remember that one Drama CD where some perverted dude takes control of four minors and has them sexually assault one another? There’s also that one time where Miruko called Izuku useless and praised Katsuki for his aggressive behavior…
Simply put, a lot of the bonus content for MHA really doesn’t make canon look any better. In fact, I’d say it makes things far worse.
Somehow Vigilantes made it out relatively fine though. In fact, I’d say it’s well written and enjoyable. If you want a series that treats its MC and side characters with respect, has a quirkless vigilante who’s tough as hell (bro kept up with Shota and one-shot Stain), and neat villain ideas, then I’d recommend picking up Vigilantes.

Know who deserved better? The reporters. They're painted as cruel as vultures for righteous calling out heroes for the hippocrise, like Bakugo violent behavior, Endeavor being abusive and responsible for the villain Dabinajd the school's incapability of keeping their children safe.
As someone who studied journalism in college this pissed me off. Now, there are a lot of journalists out there who want to push an agenda and will act like vultures to do so, but there are also journalists who wish to uncover the truth and challenge the parts about society that they feel need to be challenged. The journalists in MHA fall under the second category but Hori frames them as being in the first. The journalists are right that U.A, the nation’s biggest and greatest hero school known for producing heroes such as All Might and whose Sports Festivals rival the Olympics in terms of popularity, has utterly failed in protecting its students multiple times. They are also right in that Katsuki, someone who has clear anger issues and lacks the empathy needed to be a hero, shouldn’t be at U.A. Yet somehow, despite this and with Shota’s god awful reasonings as to why Katsuki deserves to be a hero, we’re supposed to see the journalists as the bad guys for questioning U.A.
