Hey Tolkien people and history buffs of Tumblr, I'm in need of your assistance. Does anybody know if there was an actual historical inspiration (or many) to the narrow, no rails, stone bridge of Khazad-dûm?

For context, I'm trying to use it as an example in my theoretical physics dissertation on the dynamics of pedestrians moving in a single line, but I've already met with some resistance from advisors with No Taste. All my google searches have conducted to analyses of the effectiveness of the Khazad-dûm scene in the book & movie, instead of an analysis of the actual "physical" bridge.

I know I could use other modern examples from construction scaffolds or bus and plane boarding/exiting schemes for single-line movement, but that's boring. Uninspired. Everyone does it. What I want is a badass illustration from The Lord of the Rings, and a JRR Tolkien quote on my very theoretical, so abstract that is basically useless, physics dissertation.

Person 1: does the thing

Person 2: "Don't do that"

1: "I don't understand how to not do that"

2: "just don't do it"

1: "I don't want to do the thing. It makes me unhappy to do the thing. But I don't understand how to not do the thing. Please tell me how to not do the thing."

2: "You just... don't do it"

1: does the thing again and then cries or is angry because in addition to all the reasons they already had to not want to do the thing, they know they're disappointing/angering/damaging the relationship/look like an idiot to 2

2: "You're continuing to do it on purpose, because you don't care or intentionally want to hurt others."

Sometimes in the depths of their frenzy of panic and fear and stress and being willing to do literally anything up to suicide to avoid doing the thing again, 1 Finally figures out how to not do it. It's obvious at this point that, "just don't do it" is actually a perfectly reasonable instruction, just 1 is stupid, distracted, exhausted, or really bad with some essential part of the process that others don't struggle with.

Added bonus step: 1 just pulls back emotionally from others in general because interacting with others seems to unavoidably involve hurting them inadvertently and experiencing the emotional discomfort of this interaction pattern.

How do you avoid this situation, from either side, ideally from both sides?

So, I finished reading Masters of Death by Olivie Blake and was saddened to see that there was only one fanfiction in all of ao3 under the fandom—which led me to thinking; how can a book so incredible not have a bigger fandom? It has everything a queer reader could possibly ask for—inclusivity, a sexually fluid main character, heartbreak, angst, beautifully diverse and colourful side characters, delightfully delicious sexual and romantic tension between characters, an engaging yet simple plot that’s easy to follow and fun to read, and an ending that tied up all loose ends cleanly was SATISFYING. And not to mention the absolute artistry of Olivie Blake’s writing style and the artwork included in the chapters as well as the beginning/end pages. Stunning!

Which kinda leads me to where I’m at now—I had a specific, rated E (NOT for everyone, to clarify; for Explicit), scene stuck in my head after finishing this book, and chose to write it all down! If anyone within the fandom would like to read it, I’m looking for a Beta to read through it and give some critiques and suggestions before I decide to post it to ao3. It’ll be my first fic, and I’m moderately nervous about it if I’m being honest! I only ever write stories and novels about my own characters, and am always nervous about being in character, or maybe a certain scene isn’t how the author envisioned them acting out, or perhaps I got a detail wrong—so on and so forth.

This is, quite honestly, one of the most breathtaking books I have ever read.

okay more experienced tumblr users, i need help with two questions:

why is it that certain tags don't come up as auto-complete options even if i've used it before multiple times? i made a little tag for my asks "katz questions" and it doesn't come up when i'm typing until after i've used it once already on that day. it doesn't show up otherwise, as if it's never been used despite me having used it a dozen times already. is there a reason for that, or just a bug?

what is the purpose of tagging "queue" (or some variation) on reblogs that you add to your queue? i see this literally everywhere and i genuinely don't know what the purpose of it is. is it just a "heads up" to the op that it was in your queue? or for your followers to know it was queued?

i know my way around tumbr now, but i am not a veteran who has been actively participating and posting since 2012 or anything. there's certain things, like the queue tag, that are like, understood parts of the website i've never found an explanation for. i figured out a bunch of stuff on my own, like what queuing was in the first place, but i need some advise for these if you have any answers for me!
