Tumblr media
You’re running down the street for as long as your feet carry you. You don’t have a specific goal in mind - all you know is you have to get as far away from home as possible.
Keeping your gaze fixated on your sneakers going in and out of your view so nobody would see the tears still streaming down your face, your legs eventually take a few turns to lead you back onto an all too familiar path. You don’t register it yet, but the houses around you that you’ve passed by a thousand times are slowly causing you to calm down a bit, and when you’re finally out of breath and you come to a halt, one look at your surroundings is enough to know where you are.
“Oh…” you sigh to yourself, starting to walk towards that one house at the far end of the street. The image of his face flashes by your inner eye, and you suddenly feel like he’s the only person you’d want around you right now. So you make your way to his place, and when you arrive, you ring the doorbell without hesitation. It takes him a few moments, but sure enough he soon opens the door for you, a surprised expression on his face.
“Y/N!” Bomin calls out your name. “What are you doing here?"
"I…” You’re not sure what to tell him, but when he notices the tear stains on your face and concern reflects in his gaze, you blurt out the truth. “I didn’t know where else to go.”
“Come in first of all,” he says, inviting you with a motion of his hand, and he leads you towards the couch in the living room. “I’m alone right now,” he informs you, so you would know that you could talk freely and wouldn’t have to worry about his parents overhearing your conversation. Sitting down next to him, you fidget with the sleeves on your shirt, but you’re not sure what you should say to him.
“Do you wanna talk?” your best friend asks carefully as he leans in to get a closer look at your face, and eventually you shake your head.
“It’s just… the usual,” you mutter, and you lift your head to make eye contact with him.
“Ah…” He furrows his eyebrows, a mixture of complicated feelings hiding underneath, but he keeps calm nonetheless. He knows that getting angry about the situation would do nothing to help you, and so he returns his focus back to you. Bomin puts an arm around your shoulders, and he continues, “Then… what about some food? We can order whatever you like, I’ll treat you.” His offer causes you to smile, along with the way just being near him makes you feel protected.
“Actually…” you say, and now you’re feeling shy all of a sudden. “I was thinking… maybe… a hug?” Your best friend raises his eyebrows at you, and for a moment you think you can see him blush. But then he nods, and he wraps his arms around you in an embrace that feels warm and sincere. Closing your eyes as he holds you, you eventually return the hug, wishing you could stay like this forever. And in feeling safe with him, you also notice another emotion that’s been growing deep in your heart, mixing in with the comfort he brings.
“Better now?” His voice is surprisingly soft when he speaks, and he brings some distance between the two of you. You nod, mustering a thankful smile, and when you see his relieved face right in front of you, you know you wouldn’t want to be anywhere else right now.

one.
It was the end of June, and your mom said a trip to Long Island —you’d never heard of that place before— would be the greatest gift she could offer you for your twelfth birthday. You didn’t believe her after she gifted you an agate necklace, your favorite stone.
It was the end of June, and your mom said a trip to Long Island —you’d never heard of that place before— would be the greatest gift she could offer you for your twelfth birthday. You didn’t believe her after she gifted you an agate necklace, your favorite stone.
Unfortunately, it had nothing to do with the trip you’d imagined.
After getting to Montauk, and spending a few hours on the beach, she drove north. You then walked up what you thought was a random hill. When you were almost on top, you turned towards your mom to tell her you wanted to go back, that you’d rather go home and watch a movie. She was sobbing. It took you aback and broke your heart to see her that way. You wanted to hug her so badly.
She grabbed the backpack she had over her shoulders and put the handle in your hands.
“You must go further north, alright? You’ll find someone who can help you,” she instructed as she kneeled in front of you, stroking your face affectionately.
“What are you talking about, mom? I don’t want to go anywhere without you.”
“It’s going to be alright, sweetheart. You have to trust me. You’re so special, you don’t realize how much. You must go on your own path now. It’s time.” Her voice cracked a little. “Go, you’ll be safe there.”
“This doesn’t make any sense…” you mumbled and stood your ground.
“Maybe because your mommy failed to mention why you’re here,” an icy voice said, making you flinch. Your mom quickly got up and put a protective hand on your shoulder, “and why you’re both going to die today.”
“You’re too late. My daughter will live.”
A light yet threatening laugh left the woman’s throat. She was extremely beautiful, but there was something wrong with her. Not physically, it was more of a feeling.
“We’ll see about that.”
As the woman charged, your mom pushed you out of the way.
“Run!” she yelled as she shielded you with her whole body, turning her back on the woman. You didn’t want to leave her but what could you do? You ran as fast as you could to the top of the hill, still being able to hear what was happening behind you.
“I’m Keahi,” the woman said as she grasped your mom’s arm and forced her to spin so that they faced each other. “Might as well know my name, since I’m the last person you’ll ever see, mortal. You’re going to die knowing it was for nothing.”
You only turned around when you heard a sharp gasp.
You watched helplessly as your mom’s limp body fell to the ground with a loud thud. The woman had blood dripping from her hand— no, her claws. It dawned on you that she had murdered your mom and you were next. You turned around and resumed your sprint. Due to your fear and teary eyes, you realized too late that now that you were at the top, you’ll be going down.
You braced yourself as you could for the fall. Your body got scratches from a few low branches and brambles. When you arrived at the bottom of the hill, you looked up to see if the woman had followed.
It wasn’t the beautiful woman you saw earlier anymore, she had flaming hair, white skin and glowing red eyes. You could only see her head, but it was enough to get nightmares. She bared her fangs and turned around, like she couldn’t get to you anymore.
You tried to breathe but it came out ragged, hands shaking and lips trembling. The sun was heating up your skin. The birds were chirping happily while the despair you were feeling was starting to become unbearable as you clutched at your sides. Tears were streaming down your face, blurring your vision. Not that you had much to look at, anyway, except trees.
You closed your eyes and before you could register what was going on, a paradise appeared before them. There was grass, trees, farm animals, a waterfall and sky in different rainbow colors, plus a rainbow in the background. It obviously wasn’t real, but for some reason the colors perfectly matched. It made you feel at ease. A drastic change from the state you were in mere seconds ago. It momentarily made you forget about it, the sight filling you up with warmth and peace. It only lasted a couple minutes, although by now you breathed normally again, tears dried up.
When you opened your eyes and turned around, you could see a huge amphitheater in the distance, a volleyball court and… were these strawberry fields? Off the corner of your eye, you caught sight of a boy smiling sheepishly, seated a few meters away from you. Blinking a few times, you let out a long sigh.
“Are you okay?” the boy asked in a raspy voice.
It doesn’t match his angelic face, you thought.
He had freckles, a fair and soft skin, short blond hair and brown eyes. He was wearing an orange t-shirt, shorts and sneakers.
You nodded, getting up painfully. Your limbs felt sore, the cuts on your face and arms started to ache.
“I can bring you to the infirmary if you want.”
Maybe you shouldn’t have trusted him right away. Maybe he was with the monster. But he didn’t look evil. He didn’t feel evil, either. So, you followed.
“I hope my illusion helped you feel a tad better.”
“What I saw when I closed my eyes, you did this?”
“Yeah. I’ve been practicing.”
He had a peaceful aura that calmed you down instantly. He was so sweet with you, but all you could think of was: what did you do to deserve this kindness? You had just abandoned your mom to her death.
“Why?” You were trembling, and your voice was just above a whisper.
“Why what?”
“Why did you create this illusion?”
“Oh. You looked like you needed a cheer up.”
A surge of gratefulness engulfed you and you smiled.
“Thank you.”
“I heard voices over the hill and when I came, I saw you falling down. There was a monster at the top.”
Your smile disappeared. “I— she killed my mom.”
Eyes widening, the blond boy internally slapped himself for making you sad all over again after all his efforts to make you feel better. “I’m sorry.”
You arrived at the infirmary after a few minutes of awkward silence, and quiet amazement on your part at the amphitheater you could see more clearly, the pavilion full of white tables, more than twenty houses differently decorated and a hearth in the center, even an arena, with kids and teens from different ages all around.
A brown haired guy was tending to a sleeping kid around your age, bruises, cuts and burns all around their face and arms. They were wearing jean overalls with an orange t-shirt, all covered in soot from head to toe.
“Jisung!” the boy next to you called as soon as he spotted him.
“One sec,” he replied without looking up. He brought the teen’s head up with one hand and poured some amber liquid down their throat with the other. He rested their head back delicately on the mattress, got up and turned around to greet the newcomers.
“Hi F— Wow, hey there! Sit here,” he motioned toward an empty bed, “I’ll be right back.” He left through a door made of white sheets.
“Do I really look that bad?”
The blond boy chuckled, slowly shaking his head. “By the way, I didn’t give you my name. I’m Felix.”
You looked up at him, managing a side smile. “I’m Y/N.”
“Nice to meet you, Y/N.”
You didn’t have time to answer that Jisung was back with medicine. He cautiously cleaned your wounds with the same yellowish liquid he used to treat the other kid. It felt like he was treating you like porcelain.
Then, he brought a golden cube up to your mouth.
“What is this?”
“A bit of ambrosia. It heals demigods, but too much can have bad side effects.”
Demigods??
“Eat it, you’ll feel better.”
Whatever.
With newfound trust in strangers, you chewed on the sweet food. It tasted like the mac’n’cheese your mom would make on rainy days. The memory comforted you, but also induced some pain within. Your wounds started to fade until they were completely healed.
“Thank you,” you murmured, in awe at the product. You definitely needed this stuff.
“Of course, it’s my job,” he beamed. “So, Felix,” he turned to his friend, “where did you find this stray kid? Tell me you didn’t go on a little quest on your own—”
“I found Y/N near the border, she’s new,” he interrupted him.
You were thankful he let out the details of your encounter.
“Oh, my bad! I guess you have to take her to the Big House, then.”
He nodded, extending his hand your way. You stared at it, then at the freckled boy, then back at it. Taking it slowly, he walked you to the Big House, which lived up to its name. You choked when you saw a centaur —an actual centaur?!— walking out of the front door.
“Greetings, Chiron!”
Chiron? From the legends??
“Felix. Welcome to the camp half-blood, young lady. I’m Chiron, activities director. Have you been claimed already?”
“Huh…”
“I didn’t see anything,” Felix answered. “I see. Perhaps we’ll know tonight at the campfire. Can you show our new recruit around? I’m off to archery class.”
“Sure.”
He thanked Felix, sent a smile your way and galloped away to the west. The realization you were still holding the boy’s hand made you blush, but before you could retract it, he pulled you with him to different places.
He explained the purpose of the strawberry fields and the society name —Delphi Strawberry Service— covering the camp. He showed you the climbing wall with lava, the dining pavilion, the forge full of Hephaestus kids, the armory —he tried to make you choose a weapon but you refused—, the Pegasus stables —with actual pegasi!—, the arena where demigods trained, the archery field where Chiron was teaching, the camp store —you could buy an orange t-shirt there later—, the arts & crafts center —you saw a beautiful black-haired boy painting there among other kids—, the canoe lake, the forest— you weren’t keen on entering after Felix told you what was in it. You finished the tour next to the hearth in the center of the houses you saw earlier. You could swear you saw a woman in the fire, but when you looked more closely, she was gone.
He explained everything except the reason why you were here in the first place. “This is all charming and interesting, but why am I here?”
“I was getting to that. These are the cabins of the major Greek gods and some of the minor ones. Here,” he gestured to the most colorful cabin out of the bunch, “is my mom’s, Iris, goddess of rainbows.”
It explained the illusion. The cabin looked like a huge trailer with a platform on the front and a little rainbow as antenna. It looked chill and welcoming.
Felix gave you the names of all the gods and goddesses’ cabins present on this camp, making hypotheses on who your dad might be.
“Do you like mechanics? Are you good at poetry or archery? Or swords? Do you enjoy grape juice? Maybe you’re a trickster? Do you enjoy sleeping? I mean, do you spend most of your time sleeping? Can you control light? If none of those… Maybe you’re a child of one of the Big Three.”
“Who are the Big Three?”
“Zeus —god of the sky—, Poseidon —god of the sea— and Hades —god of the dead and king of the Underworld.”
You pondered. “This is a dream. I’m gonna wake up.”
He chuckled —an endearing sound— and shook his head. “I think I’d know if it was one. No, you’re a demigod, Y/N. For real.”
When you didn’t respond, he glanced at you. You were lost in thought, wondering who your father could be, why you’ve never seen him before and why he never came to see you.
“Come on, there’s one more thing I’d like you to see.” He tugged at your hand and dragged you towards the beach.
The sun was setting. You sat on the sand, looking at the horizon. It was really pretty. But you couldn’t avoid reality for too long. A tear fell down your face thinking about how your mom would’ve loved coming here, looking at this scenery with an arm around your frame.
She was gone.
From this moment, you swore to yourself that, when you were ready, you would find the monster and avenge your mom, no matter what. Felix saw your determined eyes staring in the distance. It gave him an idea on who your father might be.
At the campfire, you realized a lot more campers than you initially thought were here. You’ve seen a bunch during the tour, but right now, when the whole camp was gathered around the fire, it felt like you were a couple hundred.
Some had musical instruments and were preparing for what you guessed was a concert. A dozen, more or less, were looking all dressed up and pretty, a few were playing with balls of energy —magic?—, others were dozing off wherever, from another kid’s shoulder to the floor. The rest looked somewhat normal, apart from the kids with hands partially tainted with soot. Might be tough to get rid of it when they spend so much time in the forges.
Some kids greeted Felix and welcomed you into the camp, which felt nice. Although you couldn’t remember every name, you were grateful for their kind words.
It seemed that the Apollo cabin was actually preparing for a singalong. Everyone sang, cheered and overall had a good time. Felix nudged you from time to time to check up on you and offer you bright smiles. So bright, in fact, that they were almost blinding. But you didn’t mind. His sole presence was enough to give you peace of mind. Maybe because looking at him reminded you of the illusion he created for you.
The campers were asking for an encore, when silence abruptly fell and every pair of eyes were on you. Or above you, to be precise, but it felt the same to you.
Exposed, vulnerable and embarrassed.
You glanced at Felix, who was looking up too. He lowered his gaze, locked eyes with you and motioned for you to look up as well. It was a glowing golden helm hologram suspended above your head.
“The bloodline is determined. Hades, king of the Underworld. Hail Y/N L/N, daughter of the dead and riches.”
Every camper kneeled, including Chiron and Felix, and you wanted to disappear from the Earth. Was it just because you ended up being a child of the Big Three? Or did every camper have the privilege of experiencing such a stressful moment?
At last, they all got up and resumed the singalong for a well-deserved encore.
An older guy walked to you from a corner. He was tall, had dark eyes and a harsh resting face. You recoiled in your seat, scared of what he might do. But then he showed a toothy smile with dimples and extended his hand for you to shake.
When you did, he said: “Welcome home, sis.”
Once alone in your bunk —you had slipped away before the end of the campfire— you sobbed, hugging the backpack your mom put in your hands earlier that day.
It smelled like her.
Calming down a bit, curiosity took over and you opened it. There was a pocket knife, pepper spray, a pack of matches, a flashlight, tissues, a sleeping bag, a water bottle and food.
It struck you. She knew what you were long before you did.
Tumblr media
two.
Felix shouldn’t have laughed.
The whole scene was just so ridiculously funny, he had to.
You were training at the climbing wall like every other day, except today, someone had the good idea to change the mode from normal to full lava-and-earthquake while you were on it. Needless to say it took you by surprise. You fell to the bottom, earning smoking holes in your t-shirt and singed arms' hair.
Felix helped you get out of the lava floor, miserably trying to suppress his giggles. “Are you okay?”
“Who turned the climbing wall into a frenzy? I just wanna talk!”
Your eyes showed you were being serious, although a little smile appeared after looking at your best friend’s face.
Turns out it was a Hermes kid, obviously.
To get back at him, you created a hole under his feet. He screamed as he sank up to his ankles. He lost balance and fell on his butt. A few kids that fell off the climbing wall with you clapped their hands and laughed.
Oh yeah, my bad. I forgot to tell you you could do that, among other things.
Being at Camp Half-Blood year round was actually a great thing. Undeniably, between that and being with your mom, the choice was clear, but since she was gone… All you could do was train to be able to protect mortals like you should’ve protected your mom and avenge her as well.
I know what some may think. It wasn’t your fault (and it wasn’t. really.) but you couldn’t make peace with it just yet. Guilt still ate you up at night.
After understanding what it meant to be a kid of Hades, you tried to find and talk to your mom. A ghost appeared instead of her. It looked like a staff member, with greek armor and a formal look. He told you your mom was in Elysium, that ‘she wanted you to follow your own path’ and that ‘she didn’t want to see you until you were old and had a full life’. It felt so unfair. You tried to argue but the ghost didn’t stay to hear your complaints, leaving you in your grief.
You ended up entering the armory. Even if you were against violence, you came to terms with the fact that you couldn’t protect others by solely making holes on the ground. Felix showed you all the best pieces of celestial bronze weapons. He made you try on several, making you swing swords, throw knives, shoot arrows… It was unsure what would suit you best.
At last, your eyes caught sight of a dusty black metal in a corner, behind javelins. Dusting off the sword a bit, you felt like it belonged in your hand. It wasn’t too heavy, nor too light. It just felt right.
“It’s stygian iron,” Felix explained, “Hades’ own sword is made of it.”
Did you resent him? Probably… yeah. If he had been there, two years ago, he could’ve saved your mom. But you never saw him, ever. You often wondered if you were even worthy of his presence.
“Y/N?”
Your head shot up, “yeah?”
“You looked out of it. Are you okay? We can stop looking for weapons if you want.”
“No, I’m good. I’ll take this one.” It hasn’t left your side ever since.
Felix proposed to train together. It was fun, both of you ending up at the infirmary more often than not. Jisung was always there to treat your wounds while cracking jokes.
Dawon, the Hades’ cabin’s head counselor that scared you on your first night, was actually really cool. He showed you around the cabin, welcomed you like a true sibling. You enjoyed eating with your siblings at the dining pavilion, talking strategies and kicking ass during capture-the-flag and chariot races, chatting before bed and getting ready together in the mornings.
Other than that, you didn’t spend a lot of time with them. No, Felix was practically attached to your hip at this point. He has been a huge pillar to your recovery. If it wasn’t for him and his bright aura, you would’ve been morose and sad. He probably knew that too.
When you passed by the arts & crafts building, you often saw the pretty boy. The sun would often reflect on his face, making his skin glow. His stance was elegant, his features soft and flawless. He had sunlight in his shoulder-length black hair and his long fingers seemed to be working effortlessly against the canvas. In a way, watching him paint for a while was relaxing. Curiosity always got the best of you as you wanted to see his next art piece.
All you knew about him was that he was a child of Aphrodite and an amazing painter.
Tumblr media
three.
“I did not sign up for this!” you grunted, slashing your sword across monsters left and right.
“You didn’t sign anything,” Jisung recalled, twirling to avoid a clawed hand and slaying the monster with an arrow in its chest.
“It feels like, no matter how much we kill, there’s always more,” Felix puffed.
Hopefully he was pretty good with a sword, because he couldn’t rely on his mom’s powers in the darkness. After what felt like an eternity, the last monster was slayed by your sword.
“Alright, enough practice. Let’s head back before more monsters arrive,” you offered. They didn’t protest.
You were all worn out, sweating and breathing hard. The trip in the forest left very few monsters left to slay. Whoever took care of that would have some work to do.
“We managed pretty well, didn’t we?” Jisung grinned, eyes half closed. You nodded while Felix agreed.
It was practically nightfall. At seventeen, you were more trained than ever and felt ready to face the world.
The next day, there was an emergency meeting with Chiron and the head counselors. Everyone saw them hastily leave the dining pavilion during breakfast after Argus came running to them.
A few dozen minutes later, you were summoned to the Big House. You entered the meeting room and sat next to Dawon around the ping-pong table. Chiron didn’t waste any time and recited the unprompted prophecy they had heard by the current Oracle.
Child of Underworld must retrieve their father’s accessory
Magnificent Mile holds a piece of the way back in its last breath
The King’s circle’s won by defeating an old vampire enemy
The last challenge in Yellowstone ends in half-blood death
Vampire. It was about an empousa. It was enough for you to want to come, even if the last sentence worried you a bit. You were about to speak up when Chiron raised his hand.
“The sole reason you’re here is because we think it’s about you.”
“Indeed, you’re the only one I know that has an empousa as an enemy,” added Dawon as he nudged you with a smile.
Yeah, the details of your arrival ended up being known around camp. It was apparently common to arrive while chased by a monster, but not every parent died at the same time.
“Oh.”
“If you need anything for the quest, we’re here to help,” proposed Bomin, head counselor of Poseidon’s cabin.
“To make sense of the prophecy, for example,” said Doyoung, the Athena cabin’s head.
“Do you know who you’re going to ask to join you?” Chiron asked.
The only thing you knew for sure was that you were going to get your revenge. And you only needed two friends for this.
“Yeah. All I need to know now is where to begin.”
Doyoung coughed and rearranged the glasses on his nose. “Well, my friend Johnny is from Chicago and last time we spoke about his hometown, he mentioned the Magnificent Mile. He said it was the most famous avenue. Now, I don’t know if the prophecy refers to the city globally or this place precisely… But, either way, I think you need to go there.”
“Thank you for your insight. Do I have a deadline?” you inquired, turning to Chiron.
“You have until the end of the month.”
It sounded like a lot of time, then you remembered the date. “We’re the 29th.”
“Indeed. You have three days, starting now.”
Tumblr media
four.
And so began your journey. You had a backpack each, filled with medicine, spare clothes, food, water and money —drachmas and dollars.
Argus was driving you to New York on board the Delphi Strawberry Service van. Jisung kept fidgeting with the beads on his necklace.
“You’re thinking about them, aren’t you?” He squirmed uneasily. “You’ll get back alive, I promise you.”
A promise he knew you couldn’t keep, but it did reassure him a bit. He knew you were going to do everything you could so that you’ll all get back to camp alive.
Felix took your hand in his, squeezing it gently. The sudden contact brought warmth to both yours and Felix’s face and ears. Jisung chuckled at the exchange until he realized he was going to third wheel the whole trip. Then, his face dropped, a groan leaving his lips.
Before Felix could ask what was wrong, Argus pulled up in the train station’s parking. You thanked the camp’s chauffeur and entered the Pennsylvania station.
“I found a direct train,” you told them after talking with an employee, “it’ll take around nineteen hours and thirty minutes. Shall we?”
When you talked to them about the prophecy, they didn’t waste any time and said they’ll come with you. Trying to talk them out of it was useless.
As comfortably installed as possible, Felix and you in the direction of travel, Jisung in the opposite direction, the brown haired boy thought the prophecy over, again.
“Child of Underworld —that’s you, Y/N— must retrieve their father’s —Hades, obviously— accessory. What can it be? What are the known accessories he owns?”
You shrugged while the freckled boy answered his friend’s question.
“There is his bident, or staff, his sword, his helm of darkness, Cerberus, which we cannot call an accessory per say and his golden keys.”
“Is there anything more?”
“Yes, but those are the main attributes he possesses.”
“It can’t be Cerberus or the golden keys, because it’s specifically an accessory, singular,” you commented.
Felix nodded. Jisung continued, “so it’s either the staff, the sword or the helm. OK. Next line is ‘Magnificent Mile holds a piece of the way back in its last breath’. The only thing we know is that Magnificent Mile is an avenue in Chicago. I don’t like the sound of anyone’s last breath, honestly.”
“It’s probably a beast,” you proposed. “It says ‘its’.”
“That’s the most logical option we got,” Felix agreed.
“It better be. ‘The King’s circle’s won by defeating an old vampire enemy’.”
“‘Vampire’ means empousa. I guess we need whatever the King’s circle is for the rest of the quest,” you noted, “do you guys have any idea?”
They shook their heads in unison. “No, but we’ll get back to it. ‘The last challenge in Yellowstone ends in half-blood death’. Not gonna lie, I hate this one the most.”
“Yellowstone… If it’s a place, I don’t know it,” Felix said, thinking about it.
“There’s a Yellowstone national park in Wyoming, but I can’t tell for sure if it’s gonna be there,” you shared.
“It might be,” Jisung voiced and bit his lips, “but it’ll also be the last challenge, and, in case any of you forgot, it’ll end in death. Possibly one of ours.”
He was right. However, dwelling on it so soon would not help anyone.
“Let’s think about that part later, OK? Let’s focus on getting to Chicago safely.”
After four stops, the train passed over the Broadway bridge in Albany. The train weirdly shook.
“Of course,” you muttered, “this couldn’t be a nice, eventless trip.”
People started walking in our direction from the end of the train. They didn’t look particularly alarmed, like it was natural to change wagons while the train was in motion.
Felix looked up through the window and frowned. “I don’t see any—”
The train’s wheels shrieked against the rails, abruptly stopping it. Felix and you fell forward on Jisung, who grunted, obviously not enjoying the voyage so far. Then the sound of metal being crushed like a soda can filled the air. The brown haired boy looked at his friends and gulped loudly.
“Remind me why I was so eager to come?”
You tried to open the doors but they wouldn’t budge. You got closer to a window and unsheathed your sword.
“Get back.” The boys did as told, stepping back to the empty opposite seats.
You hit the glass with the pommel of your sword. It shattered, but before you could step over the wall, a glowing orange eye appeared, surrounded by glistening dark green flesh and a gigantic triangular red maw.
“What’s that smell?” Jisung gagged, closely followed by Felix.
You held your breath and stabbed the monster in the eye. It screeched in pain as it released the hold it had on the train, although not completely. Despite that, you all knew you had a few seconds before the beast would attack.
“I think I know what it is,” Felix said, “help me get on the train.”
“You already are,” Jisung retorted.
“I meant on the roof.”
“It’s too dangerous,” you cut in.
“Y/N, you were about to do it.”
“Yes, but—”
“Do you trust me?”
“Of course, b—”
“We don’t have time.”
True enough, the serpent’s mouth flew inside the wagon, missing Felix’s head by a centimeter. You used this opportunity to pierce its other eye. It flew out of the train’s window in a cry. If it wasn’t trying to kill everyone, you would’ve felt bad for it. Although now it was blind and very, very angry.
Felix finally got to the roof with Jisung’s help while you covered them. The snake was so long —around thirty six meters— it wrapped itself around the train at least four times. It had flatten it with its strong hold. Felix wondered how the bridge hadn’t fallen into the river by now.
He silently prayed to his mom and concentrated on creating a rainbow. The sunny afternoon and the river’s reverberation helped greatly. When the serpent’s head was in front of him, he generated multicolored flames from the rainbow to destroy the monster. He felt dumb when he realized it didn’t do anything, its skin extinguishing the flames on contact.
How could he expect to kill a sea snake with fire?
Scolding himself could wait. He rolled over when the monster tried to swallow him up. He unleashed blasts of multicolored energy, penetrating and burning the monster’s skin in the process. Jisung was shooting arrows from the open window, while you were slashing at the monster’s body everywhere you had access to it through the broken windows.
Finally, with one last blast of energy on the serpent’s head, it disintegrated, leaving a damaged train and exhausted demigods. Felix was wondering if the train could get powered up again and carry them all the way to Chicago, but before he could finish his thought, he collapsed on the roof.

five.
Obviously it wouldn’t be a dreamless sleep.
Felix was at a train station. A sign read “Chicago”. He felt relieved. It probably meant they’d make it there.
His consolation was short-lived, however, as he saw a huge lion a few meters away. It seemed to be patiently waiting for them, laying down on the nearest park. The worst part was the 2,50 meters tall giants behind him. They were playing rock paper scissors and one of them didn’t like to lose. He stamped his foot on the ground so hard it felt like an earthquake.
The dream changed. He was outside in the dark, perhaps on a mountain. He could tell by the chilling breeze and the glowing stars. Felix saw a woman not too far, chanting in a language he wasn’t familiar with in front of a large cauldron. He found her beautiful and delicate until he caught a glimpse of the rest of her body. From her waist down was a serpentine body, which oddly resembled the Carthaginian serpent he killed earlier.
He shuddered. When she finished chanting, she turned to Felix, boring her glowing green eyes into his.
“Oh dear, I didn’t mean for you to see me like this,” she said in a seductive way.
She snapped her fingers and the snake part of her body disappeared, replaced by a regular woman's body, wearing a thin black dress.
“There. Better, isn’t it?”
Mist, he thought.
“If you survive your little journey, I’ll be glad to feed on your flesh, even if you’re not quite a child anymore.”
If Felix wasn’t terrified before, he surely was now. He tried to speak, but no sound would come out.
She walked over to him, whispering in his ear, “I’ll drink the Apollo’s kid’s blood and eat his flesh. Once I’m done with him, I’ll deal with you. I’ll take my sweet time. And then, precious Y/N will finally feel my wrath, and eventually die.”
His blood boiled, anger and fear filling his body to the brim. He couldn’t let that happen. Before the woman could sink her crocodile teeth into his neck, Felix woke up in a cold sweat, a few minutes before the Cleveland stop.
It was night, Jisung and you were munching on homemade sandwiches. You had retrieved Felix from the roof together and laid him on two seats in an empty wagon with windows intact. Jisung had fed Felix some nectar and let him sleep for about eight hours.
No matter what the mortals saw, they succeeded in making the train move again and the passengers were seated at the front of the convoy. There was a constant shrill metallic sound coming from the bottom of the train. It was low, but definitely annoying.
“Felix,” you called, “how are you feeling?”
“Like I’ve drained myself to the point of collapsing,” he groaned, sitting up.
“Do you need more nectar?” Jisung asked.
“No, thanks. Besides, we should keep our supplies for as long as possible.”
“Take that sandwich, then.” The brown haired boy tossed him a sandwich and they ate in silence, until Felix told both of you about his dream.
“So, the good news is we’re gonna make it to Chicago,” you said.
Jisung continued, “the bad news is, we’re gonna die in Chicago.”
“I have a few hours to think about a plan while you two sleep.”
You tried to protest but Jisung’s loud yawn put an end to the debate before it even started.
Your dreams were filled with nightmares, like every demigod ever.
It started like every other night. Your mom smiling down at you, her hand stroking your hair, then her being stabbed to death by Keahi. This time the woman smirked and whispered, “I’ll enjoy killing you more than I did your mother.” You were about to curse her when the dream changed.
It was night and in the open space, although a bonfire brightened Felix’s liveless body lying on the ground and Jisung’s limp corpse against a rock a few meters away. You wanted to scream, tears running down your cheeks. A triumphant laugh came from everywhere around you, cutting through the dead of night.
The next dream was so different, it shocked you. You were back on Half Blood Hill, except there was no sign of your mom or the empousa. Instead, there was a tall, shoulder length black haired man with fairly white skin and intense black eyes standing around ten meters away from you. What surprised you the most was the black flowing robes he was wearing, filled with evil souls threaded into it.
Despite his morbid appearance, he was looking at you with unexpected tenderness. You were wondering who this man might be when he spoke up.
“Y/N,” he called, “I’m sorry it took me so long to appear.”
Then it clicked. Of course. This intimidating man was Hades, your dad. A surge of hatred ran through your body beyond your control.
“Where were you? All this time, when I got kicked out of school every other year, when I was made fun of, when mom died? Where were you? Did you even love her?”
His eyes flared with purple fire for a second, his face hardening, but you were too furious to be afraid of the consequences. Just as fast, he calmed himself.
“I did love her, yes. But I couldn’t do anything, to protect you and because I can’t meddle with my children’s lives. You had to forge your own path for it to mean anything. You still do.”
You scoffed. “Bet you say that to all your kids.” The uneasy look he gave you proved you were right. “Gods, you do have a healthy way with kids, huh?”
“I understand your rage. But right now, you must focus on your quest.”
“Easy for you to say,” you muttered.
“You must not fall into a blind rage when you see her. You must control your thirst for revenge.”
“You sure love to tell me what to do for someone I just met.”
“Y/N… If you don’t control your powers, bad things could happen. Your friends might pay the price.”
“Oh so now you’re threatening my friends!”
He sighed, visibly tired. His form began to fade. “I have to go. Remember my words when you face the empousa.”
Before you could make a snarky remark, he vanished. You woke up feeling so angry your friends could practically see it.
“Usually we wake up confused, terrified, or determined, but as angry as you are, I’m afraid to ask about what you saw,” Jisung started joking, but then recoiled in his seat in front of you.
Felix gave you a worried look.
“I’m okay.” You were still fuming but they knew better than to push it.
When you sat up, the blond boy sat next to you and took your hand in his. It calmed you down more efficiently than you’d care to admit.
“We’re almost there. And I have a plan.”

six.
The Great Hall was majestic, with columns all around and a barrel-vaulted skylight bathing the room in soft light. It was giving Greek revival vibes, which comforted you if only for a moment.
You were firmly holding the grip of your sword, mentally preparing for the fight ahead. The lion was waiting for you three outside the station, but there was no giant in sight.
The fact that Felix had a plan didn’t ease your nerves that much, because plans rarely unfolded as expected. But he knew stuff about monsters and Greek mythology as a whole, so it was helping.
“He’s not that big,” Jisung shrugged, “just the size of a pick-up truck. We can totally get him.”
He nocked his arrow as the Iris kid and you unsheathed your swords.
Not two minutes into the fight, you realized that Felix was right. The lion’s pelt was deflecting all your weapons. It was pointless to attack from behind and by surprise. You tried to keep him occupied until Felix could find an opening.
“Guys, I’m no Hercules, so don’t expect me to asphyxiate him with my bare hands!” Jisung shouted. He tried to shoot an arrow into the lion’s eye, but he somehow saw it coming and protected himself.
“It would’ve been easier with a cornucopia but…” Felix threw his backpack into the lion’s maw. As he bellowed in disgust, your friend shouted, “now!”
Jisung fired arrows into his open mouth. He dissolved except for his pelt. “Great. I’ve always wanted to resemble a caveman.” The Apollo kid’s wry comment made you smile.
He somehow succeeded in putting it away in his bag, at the same moment the three giants decided to show up. They were coming from the park, their iron clubs laying low.
“Where is the lion? There was a lion, right?” one of them asked.
“Already defeated, useless scamp! And guess what? You’re next!” Jisung raised his arms wide, like he was waiting for a group hug. Then, he gestured to the giants with one hand. “What kind of ogres are you, anyway?”
Felix nudged him. “They’re Laistrygonian giants, dude. Muscular tattooed man eaters.”
“You look awfully smug for our next lunch, half-blood,” the tallest of the giants said.
“In your dreams, you witless gollumpus!” He didn’t waste any more time and shot arrows at them. They deflected the projectiles with ease except for the smallest giant, who apparently wasn’t paying much attention. He crumbled into dust.
The other two roared in outrage and sprinted your way, brandishing their clubs high above their heads. Felix sidestepped when the giant swung his arm, rolled between his legs and stabbed him in the back.
Two down, one to go.
“You’ll pay for that, demigods!” the tallest giant bellowed before laying his arm down on Jisung.
You cut off his arm with a swirl of your sword. He yelled, turned and tried to crush your throat with his remaining hand. He was circling your neck with his huge fingers, but Felix thrusted his celestial bronze sword into his side. He disintegrated.
“Thank you,” you breathed with difficulty, locking eyes with Felix.
He dropped his blade and enveloped you in a comforting hug that lasted more than the average.
“Are you okay?” he inquired, cupping your face with his hands. He searched your face for any sign of hurt, sadness, fear… But there was only relief and tiredness. You nodded.
“You fought bravely.”
You turned, raising an eyebrow at the sight of a beautiful woman with black eyes and blond hair. She was wearing a black gown and carrying two old-fashioned reed torches. She was surrounded by green light and Mist was everywhere around her.
Felix let go of your face and unconsciously grabbed your hand instead. He studied the goddess, picking up on the details that showed who she might be. Unfortunately, he wasn’t sure you could trust her.
“Why, thank you mysterious woman! So, which one are you?” Jisung questioned, a bit wary.
“Hecate,” Felix murmured.
“Well done, Iris kid. Before you ask, I’m here to offer guidance. You’re about to—”
“Sorry, but, um… You’re the goddess of magic, you created empousai. Why would you help us?” you asked. It didn’t make sense to you, knowing the prophecy, which you were sure she knew about too.
“As I was saying, daughter of Hades,” she continued with a neutral voice, “you’re about to face great danger.”
“What, more than the usual death threats? What a bummer,” Jisung snorted, crossing his arms.
“Your insolence isn’t helping your case, Apollo kid. My children —or creations, whatever— don’t always follow my orders. We’re not obliged to share the same faith. They’re free. Like my children back at camp half-blood.” You waited for her to continue.
“Jisung, joking around helps you hide your scars, but you need to embrace them to properly move forward. Sharing your burden might do the trick. You’re also worth more than you think.”
She then turned to your freckled friend. “Felix, you need to stop putting everyone before yourself. You cannot control everyone’s happiness. You’ll soon have to prove you can keep your distance, for your own sake.”
Finally, she set her eyes on you. “Y/N, I know you think you’re not worth being here, going on this journey. You feel helpless, because you haven’t slayed any monster yet. But do not worry, your time will come soon enough, and with that, your greatest challenge. You have so much more power within than you might believe. This power needs to be used wisely.”
A wave of uneasiness washed over the three of you, Hecate’s words touching some nerves. Her words echoed your father’s. You regretted your outburst in your latest dream because you could have used this opportunity to ask which one of his attributes was missing. That would have made one less question unanswered.
“Well.” She clapped her hands. “I should probably tell you, now that there’s no more ground means of transport to Wyoming —I mean, you’re not going to steal a car, are you?— you’ll need to use aerial transportation.”
“But how—” Felix started, but got cut off.
“Off I go. Remember, you have two days left to get back to camp safely. Good luck on your quest, demigods. I hope Tyche can lend you some.”
She disappeared in a cloud of Mist.
“If I didn’t feel good then, I definitely do now!” Jisung sarcastically smiled.
For the first time since you’ve known him, you realized Hecate was right about the guy. Behind all the jokes and smiles, he had a sadness in him that was hard to decipher. But you were aware now. Felix was visibly concentrating, eyes closed and face facing the sky.
“Do you want to talk about what Hecate said?” you suggested. “About sharing your—”
“Well, I’d love to, trust me, but I’m fine. But hey, it seems you were right. Yellowstone is a national park.”
Deciding prying wasn’t gonna help, you nodded and turned your head towards the sky. You noticed a faint dark form in the horizon. Squinting your eyes in an attempt to identify what was coming for you this time, Felix left out a relieved sigh, then a chuckle. You spotted the sweat on his forehead. A few seconds later, you recognized winged horses.
Three of them.
“Did you summon them?” you questioned Felix, who was grinning.
“One of my mom’s powers. I’m glad it worked.”
Two of them were white and one was brown. They came to a stop in front of you, the brown pegasus neighing, gently nuzzling Felix.
“Thank you for coming, guys,” he said as he scratched the horse’s head. He turned to Jisung and you. “Are you ready for a ride?”
After a few hours flying high in the sky, you could finally make out the mountain you had to go to. You were about fifty kilometers away from the destination when you heard screeching from behind.
Jisung whined. “Come on!”
“Dozens of Gryphons! We’ll have to fight!” Felix yelled.
He brandished his sword, turned around and lashed out at them. You followed, while Jisung kept his distance, shooting arrows at the dozens of enemies. Dusk was only a few minutes away. The sky’s colors —blue, purple, red, orange, yellow— looked peaceful and pretty compared to the fight that was breaking out under it.
Four monsters succumbed to your blade before another one planted its talons in your pegasus’ thigh as you slashed its right wing. You cursed under your breath when the winged horse squealed, pitching up while flapping his wings frantically. He was bleeding.
You almost fell, but managed to hang on his mane and kill the gryphon. Unfortunately, another one immediately took its place and pecked your mounting’s neck with its sharp beak. He was losing too much blood, the liquid staining his beautiful white coat.
As he was dropping altitude, you were slowly and painfully losing your grip on his mane. You were falling to your death together. But not without taking the monster with you.
You squeezed the pegasus’ flanks to keep balance and brought down your sword on the gryphon’s neck. It disintegrated. You thanked and apologized to your companion for a few hours, hugging his neck in an attempt to stop the bleeding and preparing yourself for the impact. However, he crumbled into dust a few hundred meters above the ground, leaving you free falling on your own.
Felix swooped your way on his brown pegasus and caught your waist. Your arms immediately wrapped around his torso. Jisung took down the last gryphon in your peripheral view. You started to smile, but the brown haired boy’s eyes widened. He shouted: “Look out!”
The actual last monster seized the pegasus’ gaskins with its claws and pulled them, making him go upside down. Felix and you fell face first off the winged horse, holding each other tightly. You couldn’t even see the gryphon butchering its prey. Jisung slayed the monster with a well-aimed arrow and sped up to catch you both.
He wasn’t quick enough. You were swallowed by the shadows, leaving the Apollo kid behind with a pegasus as confused and worried as he was.

seven.
Felix woke up in a cave with low light coming from torches dispersed on the walls. You were passed out on the floor but didn’t look injured, which was good.
He scanned his surroundings. It was a rectangular room with a door on the far left. It seemed like there was no one else with you. He sat on his legs, put down his sword and brought your head on his lap. He poured a little amount of nectar into your parted lips.
He felt a presence behind him, but was too late to act. The invisible form dragged him away from you, your head hitting the ground with a soft thud. He tried to fight back but got tossed head first in the dirt. With a grunt, he got on his knees and looked around, but there was no one. As he got up, he felt claws scratch his chest, ripping his orange shirt in the process. He yelped, took a knife out of his belt and aimlessly sliced through the air all around him.
He saw your body move. Thinking you were waking up, he let down his guard and ran to you. He tripped on something metallic and fell down. Looking behind him, there was just the muddy floor.
“Get on your knees,” a feminine voice ordered, her words resonating dangerously across the room. “Don’t move.”
He was now on his knees, facing you with a blank expression as if he wasn’t in control of his body anymore.
The first punch he received in the gut hurt like hell, but his face and body remained motionless like a doll. Then, he received blows on his ribs, his cheeks, his jawline. It was enough for him to faint. The pain was blinding him but he kept his eyes open. He watched, helpless, as you slowly stood up, glaring his way. No, you were looking somewhere above him.
“Show yourself, blood sucker, so I can make you pay,” your voice was calm yet threatening.
Keahi laughed, moving Felix’s face so you could see all the bruises she gave him. It was a bad idea on her part because you were now fully pissed. Seeing him like this… After what she did to your mom, you wanted to end her life so badly.
The ground blackened around you and the air dropped to freezing. A black flood of anger, pain, guilt and grief poured out of you in waves, hitting the monster and Felix. The latter experienced your worst memories. The pain, guilt and grief from the death of your mom, your hardships, the anger —no, hatred— you felt towards the empousa that made your life miserable.
“Stop this!” she taunted.
It seemed to get Felix out of his trance.
“Y/N…” he murmured and hit the floor.
All the pain he received in the last minutes knocked him out. This scene made you more furious, if that was even possible at this point. The waves became thicker and stronger, making Keahi loudly hit the nearest wall.
“You’re just a kid! You might be powerful, but not powerful enough to destroy me and my sister.” Desperation was evident in her voice. “If you keep going, you’ll kill the boy too.”
You went at it for several more seconds. It was hard to stop, you wanted her dead and your emotions took over your judgment. Although, one look at Felix’s limp body was enough for you to snap out of it.
You reached for your sword and threw it in her direction like a javelin. It planted itself in the wall. The empousa disintegrated and a golden ring fell on the floor. The waves stopped and the flood slowly dissipated. Before you could take a step towards Felix, you passed out again.
Jisung was patrolling from the air, alert for any movement on the mountain, without being certain you were even there. Several minutes later, he saw black smoke coming from a strange rectangle on the ground. Getting closer, he realized it was a hatch.
The pegasus landed on the floor next to it. Jisung dismounted and opened the hatch to a dark corridor. He waited for the dark Underworld stuff —meaning you were probably there— to disappear completely before venturing inside, his bow ready.
At the end of the damp corridor was a single door. He entered and found his friends’ bodies on the floor, a hand extended to each other’s direction. He flew to Felix’s side, poured nectar into his mouth, winced when he caught sight of his bruises and chest, then gave you the same treatment, relieved to see there weren't many physical injuries.
He didn’t want to leave any of you alone and he couldn’t move both of you at the same time. He was about to sit down when he spotted your sword in the wall. He grabbed the hilt and pulled it out with much effort. Something golden was on the floor so he picked it up. It was a golden ring.
Spoil of War? It didn’t seem like it, but how could he know? He wasn’t there. He put it in his pocket anyway. Felix opened his eyes and immediately went to your side. He reached for his backpack.
“I already gave her nectar.”
Felix’s head turned so fast his neck cracked. “You scared me!”
“Sorry.” Jisung walked over. “Let’s go, this place is creepy.”
The Iris kid was sending worried looks your way the whole time they spent carrying you outside. He related his version of the facts. How he was manipulated and hit by an invisible woman, experienced your pain, and passed out once the charmspeak wore off.
“It’s been a hell of a couple days, huh?”
“Tell me about it.” Fresh air and sunlight did Felix some good.
“Let’s sleep a bit before facing death again, shall we?” Jisung offered.
They took sleeping bags out of their backpack, Jisung with a bit more difficulty due to the lion’s pelt taking up most space. Both enveloped you in yours, then they argued on who should take first watch.
The brown haired boy won. He wasn’t injured and Felix visibly needed rest. He changed into a new t-shirt and insisted on being woken up a few hours later, though.
He dreamed he was in the same dark place again. The fire was cackling, lightening up the monster’s face and body. He was definitely terrified of her.
It felt like she was waiting for him. “Tomorrow we meet, demigod. Tomorrow, you die.”
He wanted to yell: “We’ll defeat you, like we did all our enemies until now.” but no sound could leave his lips.
“Oh, but they’re nothing compared to me,” she exclaimed like she heard his thoughts somehow. “Fighting me will make everything you endured so far feel like a walk in the park.”
That didn’t make him feel any better about the whole quest and their chance of survival. He was scared for his friends, for himself.
Hecate’s words replayed in his mind. “You’ll soon have to prove you can keep your distance, for your own sake.” Even if he thought his encounter with the empousa was a proof in itself, he felt dread. Something even worse was about to happen, he could feel it.
Felix woke up alert, but it was night.
“Jisung!” he complained, but he found him fast asleep next to him.
You, on the other hand, were awake, preparing a snack and humming an old song. You were so pretty with the sun lighting your hair and skin.
“Hello, Rainbow Boy. Here, eat this.”
You handed him toasts of cheese and an apple cut into quarters, but he just stared at you instead of taking them.
“Y/N,” he murmured like a whisper, a relieved sigh.
He engulfed you in a bone crushing hug, his nose buried in your neck. You hugged him back like you could, the food still in your hands.
“Are you okay? I was so scared.”
“I would be better if I could breathe,” you joked.
He apologized and let you go but stayed close, thanking you for the food.
“What happened back there? Do you know what monster it was?”
Your smile turned into a hard look. “None other than my mom’s murderer, Keahi.”
He reached for your hand, drawing smoothing circles on the knuckles with his thumb.
“I wonder how she made herself invisible. It’s not an empousa power,” he wondered.
“There was a ring.”
“A ring that makes its wearer invisible… Sounds familiar.”
“I have no clue where it is, though. Perhaps still in that cave.”
“Wait. King’s circle? Gyges was a king who found a golden ring in a cave. ‘Circle’ could mean the ring. Was it golden?” You nodded. “Then we need to get it back. It could help us on our next step.”
“No need,” Jisung yawned as he stretched, “I have it right here. Call me Bilbo Baggins.” He took the ring out of his pocket and gave it to you.
“You’re a lifesaver, I hope you know that,” you thanked him.
He smirked, “I do know, but being acknowledged is always appreciated.”
“So… If, hypothetically, I put this on…” you said, doing so. “I’ll become invisible.”
“You literally are, right now.” Felix tried to touch your shoulder but you weren’t there anymore.
You sneaked behind them and pressed a finger on their sides, watching them squirm and whine.
“OK, OK, sorry.” You took out the ring and threw it in Felix’s direction. “You should keep it.”
He had great reflexes, so he caught it easily. “Why me?”
“I already got the lion’s pelt and it’s taking way too much space, so a ring would be too much,” Jisung answered, shrugging innocently.
Rolling your eyes, you elbowed him. “You’re the best choice. You’re the most selfless out of us. I trust you.”
He wanted to argue but decided against it.
He trusted you too.

eight.
Jisung took a few minutes to say goodbye to his pegasus. He thanked him, stroked his mane and gave him a treat. Felix apologized for his companions, for which the winged horse nudged him and bowed before flying away.
“Before we go, I think I need to tell you guys something,” the brown haired boy mumbled.
Felix and you exchanged glances and offered him sympathetic smiles.
“Let’s sit,” he continued. Once you were, he took a deep breath and got into it right away.
He talked about his past. How, when he was seven, he lost his half brother in a car accident. How he ran away to the park near his house after an argument with his step dad, how his little brother went to look for him then. How he was busy pitying himself when he heard the crash. How he blamed himself for the whole thing. How he swore to never run off again because he didn’t want his mom to end up this way too. How he decided to bury his feelings and never speak of this, ever.
“Jisung… None of it was your fault,” you assured. “You were so young… I’m so sorry.”
“Ji, thank you for sharing this with us. We’re here for you. It wasn’t your fault.”
“Thanks guys… I had to tell someone before we went to our ultimate death.”
“No way you’re dying today, I won’t allow it. You’ll get back to your crush.”
“OK, chill Y/N, I don’t have a crush.”
“The redness on your face says otherwise, buddy,” Felix laughed softly.
Jisung had lessened his burden like Hecate had suggested, and it worked. He felt better, ready to move forward.
The sun was rising. You had to get to the mountain next to the one you were currently on. The only way now was by foot. And you had to be back by the end of the day.
Easy enough. No, it was definitely not easy.
But you had to try.
On your way to the monster, you explained the plan you fashioned to the boys while they were asleep. After a lot of complaining and no’s, they finally accepted it (mostly because they didn’t have better ideas). Although Felix refused to use the ring.
Three hours later, the boys and you finally set foot in the clearing. All around were old trees and, in the center, was a large cauldron on top of a bonfire. Next to it was a block of stone with a bronze helmet on top of it. So it was the helm. The monster was there, chanting in a language that resembled latin.
“Lamia,” Felix whispered, swallowing loudly.
“Ah! Children, at last,” Lamia exclaimed with a charming yet dark smile.
“We came for my father’s helm.”
“The same dad that abandoned you?”
It was true, you still resented him, but bringing everyone back safely was a priority.
“Yeah, I guess. It’s that one I presume?” you asked as you pointed to it.
“Busted,” Lamia laughed falsely before putting it on her head.
She became invisible and the fear emanating from the helm paralyzed the three of you.
It was unsure what exactly happened. Was it your survival instinct or were you more powerful than the helm itself? Whatever it was, you were able to parry the attack with your sword. There was no time wondering how you could manage that.
Without being able to see or hear where she was, you warded off every attack she threw. You were about to get the upper hand when she grabbed Felix’s mortified body. You could see it in his eyes.
“Your sister tried that and regretted it,” you spat.
Lamia reappeared when she took off the helmet, keeping it under her unused arm.
“She’s weak. I’ll make sure to let her know when she’s back.”
Of course monsters will always be back, no matter how much we slay them.
“You know,” she resumed, “your dad thinks he’s all mighty and powerful because he rules the Underworld. Yet his precious helm was too easy to steal. And he sends his beloved daughter to death for this?”
Her claws enveloping Felix’s neck and Jisung’s shattered breath gave you a hard time thinking about your next move. You couldn’t be reckless again.
You had to save them.
“Leave them alone. Let’s do this one on one.”
“Why would I accept your proposition when I have the upperhand, sweetie?”
You scoffed. “Come on now. Are you scared to face a kid? You’re acting all-powerful and invincible, but fighting me is too much?”
Her expression hardened. Pride touched.
Bingo.
Lamia shoved Felix on the floor, a vicious glare throwing daggers at you. You had to restrain yourself from jumping her right this instant.
Distancing her from your friends was vital. She put the helmet back on as you were moving around to cause her back to face them. Not wasting any time attacking, you slashed your sword here and there, not letting her ripost. However, you were getting tired. She took advantage and ripped your arm with her claws. You stumbled and closed your eyes, groaning.
“Already down? You’re making this too easy,” she mused after taking the helm off again.
Felix and Jisung regained their senses away from her. They were ready to fight. Jisung was bow ready and Felix was summoning light.
When you opened your eyes and got to your feet, you realized they were waiting for a sign. From you.
The pressure of leading was growing but you tried to bury it inside. You couldn’t deal with more anxiety at the moment. You focused on Lamia, who was grinning from a false feeling of victory, and shouted, “NOW!”
The three of you gave your all and hit her at the same time. As Felix struck her with blinding light, Jisung shot her in the back and you pierced her heart. You enjoyed her look of surprise when she disintegrated in a shrill scream. All that was left was the helm of darkness falling to the ground with a clang.
Clenching your arm, you fell on your knees. Felix engulfed you into a tight hug.
“This is gonna sound controversial, but I think that went well,” Jisung said as he picked up the helm.
“You must all be fools if you think you can take me down that easily,” a feminine voice taunted.
She was at the other side of the open space, Mist slowly dispersing around her. How did she do that? The marks on your arm were real, so when did she create the Mist? How could you not have seen it coming?
Realizing he actually didn’t have anything in his hands, Jisung quickly shot arrows her way but she managed to dodge them and put on the helmet. Felix couldn’t get up, fear keeping him grounded.
You witnessed, helpless, Jisung’s body being thrown across the clearing. Anger building up inside you, you got to your feet and charged.
Certainly you couldn’t hear or see her, but you could feel her. Probably due to your connection to the underground. But despite your best efforts, you couldn’t seem to have enough to wound her. It was almost as if she didn’t need the helm at all, like she could end you all with or without it. Like she only used it for extra fun.
Your limbs started to ache. Panting, you planted your sword on the ground. You could feel Lamia laugh triumphally.
Concentrating, you opened a crevasse that allowed skeletons to rise and surround the monster. They closed in on her, and eventually started attacking all at once. She effortlessly took them down one by one in an elegant dance.
There was only one thing left to do but your friends were here and the least thing you wanted was to hurt them.
“I have a question. Does your mom know what you’re doing? Aren’t you scared of retaliation?”
It was interesting enough for her to take the helmet off. “What are you talking about, mortal? Hecate does not care about whether you live or die today.”
Felix joined Jisung at the far end of the open space. It was now or never.
“I wouldn’t be so sure. She came to see us yesterday, you know. She might punish you later when I’m done with you.”
“I do not care about Hecate!” Her voice was trembling, though. “You’re irritating. I’ll deal with you first.”
“I wouldn’t have it any other way,” you whispered to yourself.
As she put the helmet back on for the nth time, the floor blackened. You let the flood of black smoke leave your body while the temperature dropped. It wasn’t as strong as when you faced Keahi, but anger and pain were still present. It affected her, but not enough to end her.
Felix analyzed the situation and summoned light, except he didn’t know where to hit. You tried your best to show him by sinking Lamia into the floor to her calves. The movement caught his eye. Rainbow sparks shot from the sky into her skin. You felt her scream in pain.
It still wasn’t sufficient. She was getting restless and you were getting desperate. What more could you do? It seemed to have worked the first time but it wasn’t real, how could you be sure it would work this time?
The flood was getting thicker, your hand tightening around the tilt of your sword. Of course, you could just try it again and if it didn’t work… then you would have tried until the end.
Breathing heavily, you walked up to her. Raising your sword, you whispered a “good bye” before slowly but surely pressing the blade into her heart.
Lamia didn’t just sit back. She yelled, sinking her claws into your chest and arms at the same time. You endured the pain but gasped when an arrow pierced through her neck and passed you by a few centimeters to finish its course in the nearest tree. Multicolored flames burned her too, until the helm of darkness fell to the ground in front of you.
“Y/N!” Felix ran to you. “No, no, no…”
Blood was dripping from the multiple claw marks. He caught you when your knees gave out, helping you down and maintaining your head on his hand.
“Jisung,” he desperately called, “you need to do something.”
“Already on it…”
Felix pressured on your shoulder wound with his free hand while the brown haired boy roamed through his backpack. Blood ran through his fingers.
“Stay with me, Y/N, please.”
You smiled faintly. “We won this time, right? That’s— that’s good.”
He brought you closer to him. “Yeah, thanks to you.”
“Move, loverboy,” Jisung ordered.
The Iris kid did as told but kept pressuring your wound. “You’re gonna be okay, I promise.”
These were the last words you heard before fainting.
Tumblr media
nine.
You woke up to a moving vehicle, your chest and arms tingling with every bump it rolled over. Jisung was talking to someone you couldn’t see, and Felix’s hand was intertwined with yours. More than that, you were seated next to each other, your head comfortably laid on his shoulder.
Jisung looked behind him and gave you a gummy smile. “Sleeping beauty’s awake at last!”
“Are you okay?” the boy next to you asked as you sat up straight.
You nodded and realized you were in a minibus. Unless you were mistaken, there was no vehicle whatsoever on the mountain last time you checked.
“Indeed! You needed a drive home. That’s where I came in,” a man said joyfully.
You blinked when you saw Apollo driving and waving you hello through the rear-view mirror.
“I had the brilliant idea to offer the lion’s pelt and the ring of Gyges to my dad and hoped he would grant us a little help to get back to Olympus safely and quickly,” he explained with a satisfied face.
It was exceptionally brilliant that he accepted.
During the rest of the road trip, Apollo was relating some of his adventures to whoever listened. The return was smoother than the outward, allowing you to rest a bit. The blonde boy had a worried face whenever he laid his eyes on you.
On Mount Olympus, Hades was here with the Olympian Gods, on his seldom used throne. His proud stare was weird to witness, especially when it was directed towards you. You gave him back his helm under Apollo’s loud praise for his ‘son and his companions’ bravery on this perilous odyssey’. The Gods thanked the three of you and got on with their immortal lives.
Iris winked at her kid, mouthing “I’m proud of you.” and they all left the palace.
You did the same, the boys walking to the elevator while Hades, who was following you, asked for a chat. You agreed, staying back to hear what he had to say.
“I know that blessing you with this much power made you a target. Honestly, I can’t take them back. But I know you’ll use them well. You proved during your journey that you were mature and strong enough. You’ve made me proud.”
Hearing these words filled you with a warm feeling, which you despised. It was too soon for you to warm up to him.
“I didn’t do it for you. I did it for mom.”
He nodded in understanding. “She’s in Elysium you know? She wants you to live a long, fulfilled life before seeing her again.''
You were about to tell him you’ve known for years, but he turned around and left.
You thought about your mom, and how at peace she was right now. At that moment, you decided to let go of the negative thoughts obscuring your judgment and decisions. Your mom was waiting for you, and you intended to make her proud of you.
Jogging to your friends, you smiled, happy that was finally over. Obviously you knew more danger was coming, but you’d be okay as long as your friends were there with you.

ten.
Back at camp, the three of you were acclaimed, the respective head counselors of your cabins personally greeting each of you. They looked particularly proud. The fervor of the return having dissipated, you sat in the Big House with Chiron before dinner time, to relate your journey.
“So yeah, it turned out we had to get the helm of darkness back from Lamia,” you said.
“The piece of the way back was the lion’s pelt and the last challenge was in the Yellowstone national park in Wyoming,” added Jisung.
“The King’s circle was Gyges’ invisible ring,” Felix divulged.
“I’m glad you’re all back safely,” Chiron smiled.
“I have a question, though,” Jisung raised his hand. “Half-blood death. Did it not come through?”
“It did. Lamia was a demigod, daughter of Hecate and Queen of Libya,” Chiron explained, “she was turned into a monster by Hera.”
“Explains a lot,” you muttered.
Jisung returned to his crush friend from the Hephaestus cabin while Felix and you walked together to your cabins. During your little walk, the Aphrodite kid, AKA the pretty painter, came to see you. It shocked you to see him in front of you, and it shocked you even further to see the two greet each other like old friends.
“I’m glad you’re back, Felix,” he said, a genuine smile on his face.
“Thanks Hyunjin. I’m happy to be back.”
“Hello Y/N.”
He knows my name!! How does he know my name??
“Huh, hi…”
“Felix talks about you a—”
“That’s great,” the blond boy cut him off, ears reddening, “but we have stuff to do before dinner. Bye Hyunjin, see you around!”
“Lix,” you called as he rushed you to the cabins, “how do you know him?”
“We came to camp together. Why?”
Realizing he was ‘just’ a pretty painter for you and that you were more interested in Felix than him, you smiled sheepishly.
“Nothing, I never asked how or when you came to camp.”
“Oh, well, we were seven kids on the run after monsters attacked our school, and satyrs finally found us and brought us here. We were between six and ten.”
He stopped in his tracks when he realized you weren’t following anymore. When he turned around to face you, you hugged him, burying your face in his neck. He stroked your back affectionately.
“It must’ve been hard. I’m sorry.”
“Hey, it’s okay, we made it without too many problems.”
After a good dinner and a wholehearted singalong, you ended up on the beach, eyes fixed on the stars. Hearing footsteps approaching, you only looked over when he sat next to you.
“Pretty cloudless sky, huh?”
“Yeah,” you agreed, “but the stars are prettier on your face.”
It was unknown which one of you was blushing more.
“Sorry—”
“Y/N—”
“You first,” you offered, hiding your face into your cold hands. Or was it your face that was hot?
“I came to a conclusion while on that awful quest,” Felix announced, folding his arms on top of his knees. He looked at the horizon. “I can’t bear the thought of losing you. Seeing you hurting tears me apart, and I think what Hecate meant by ‘my own sake’ wasn’t my safety, but rather my heart after seeing you suffer.” He sighed. “I guess what I’m trying to say is that… I love you, Y/N,” he finished, daring to turn your way.
He was met with you facing him and staring at him intently, tears forming in your eyes. “Felix… There are not enough words to express how much you mean to me. I literally cannot live without you. I love you so much.”
The embrace you two shared was worth a thousand words.
As you let go of each other, his eyes trailed on your collarbone, where a mark was visible above your orange t-shirt. You followed his gaze and touched your bruised skin. You locked eyes with him and smiled softly.
“These will make badass scars.”

a heart that still beats
Tumblr media
— when in the midst of despair, do you lose all hope?
synopsis: the year is 2080. in a world destroyed by climate change, there is only one hope left for safety, and of course it is one exploited by the rich and famous—make it to the airships that are fueled by oxygen on earth. unfortunately, you are neither, but you are a skilled mechanic who is separated from your companion by yet another flood.
lonely, bitter and lost, you eventually find a purpose in being the mechanic for 10 boys that have an ambitious plan to shut off the machines that fuel the cities above the earth, being welcomed as one of their own.
but this mission is their most crucial one, one that could cost them their lives. and as you think about your leader, daeyeol, you're inspired by his courage, but very nervous for the upcoming events to transpire.
cast: gn mechanic!reader x daeyeol ft. golden child members and mentions of sf9's youngbin
genre: sci-fi, dystopian!au, end of the world!au, loosely based on golden child’s ra pam pam mv, angst with comfort if you squint
wc: 6.6k (6,674)
warnings: mentions of death, gunshots, blood, flames, pollution, lots of cursing, reader cracks maybe one dirty joke (which is only dirty if you understand it), we get pretty existential here. lmk if i missed anything
a/n: reader has habit of calling everyone older hyung as that's what they've decided they're comfortable with (just y and daeyeol here), ignore the fact that it’s y on the banner LOL this is for aesthetic purposes. there's a few perspective switches near the end, and of course i always end up making the relationship ambiguous. also why is the plot so messy.. ugh i just want to get this fic out. yes this is the second time sf9 youngbin makes a cameo in my fics. i think daeyeol said he had no same age friends and i’m like oh wait who else is a 93 liner? so yeah, enjoy, because this took way too long to do.

[d-7]
you watched and gave a small nod of approval as your rc car (which jangjun had decided to name damdadi for some reason) wheeled across the tiled floor of the hideout. bomin and sungyoon were examining the oxygen tanks, but your main focus was on your tech.
ah, good. it works. and it's quiet too.
damdadi, like your other projects, was carefully crafted, because god knows you couldn’t afford to make any mistakes with your mechanical work—not that you liked to make mistakes with anything anyways. everything you did got a quality check at least twice.
nevertheless, you were nervous about whether the oddly-named damdadi would be able to complete its task of surveillance or not and with the lives of friends on the line, you certainly had no time to lose.
to the side, you picked up yet another rc car (bomin decided he'd name that one genie) and checked if it was in working order, because as a dear friend named youngbin had reminded you long ago, “it’s best to have backup plans in case any bullshit happens.”
"and bullshit will always happen," you finished the phrase easily.
as the phrase came into your mind, you wondered what had happened to him after a flood separated the both of you about a year ago—the occurrence of natural disasters was not uncommon, but that didn't mean it was any less devastating each time one occurred.
god, you remembered it so well. he had gone on a mission to gather supplies for your camp when the flood occurred. from the wreckage, you had emerged confused, tossed around like a ship lost at sea.
then, it turned into denial that he was gone, anger at circumstances you couldn’t have controlled, and then reluctant acceptance that you couldn’t find him. it wasn't like you couldn't survive on your own, but without someone to ground you, you'd be talking into a void of nothingness. still, you didn’t know if anything could fill the even deeper void in your heart.
youngbin said once to you, “loss is inevitable. remember jaeyoon? you know i would have done anything to save him, but i can’t control the fact that the soldier shot him in the damn chest, but i tried my best, and yet the feeling of not being able to save everyone fucking hurts. losing someone you love… ah, fuck. sorry if this was depressing. but if there’s anything i’d prepare you for, it’s that."
inevitable.
that word alone carried so much weight to it.
and from then on, you reminded yourself that nothing is permanent, not even the companionship of a friend. it’s the only way you got yourself through your separation.
after the flood, you were on your own for a while, trying to find youngbin. however, an annoying little shit named jangjun found you after you stole some supplies from a soldiers’ base. apparently he had the same idea.
after this incident, he took you back to meet the other 9 members of the crew you were part of now. although initially reluctant to trust them, you found their company to be likable enough. you assumed the role you always did, finding spare parts that could be repurposed as you always used to do with youngbin.
you knew youngbin and daeyeol were two separate people, but you couldn’t help but see one in the other and think that they might get along. thinking about the two of them together made things so much harder.
thinking about those days, you sighed. you couldn't believe a trip down memory lane could randomly be triggered by one glance at an rc car, but it would be unwise to stay there for too long. of course, you allowed yourself those brief moments of distraction in your memories, and then focused on the task at hand again. it was a reasonable way to live.
yes, you did miss those you had lost, but now was definitely not the time for that.
don't get too distracted. you have work to do. you have to keep going.
despite the gravity of the situation you were in, you couldn’t help but crack a joke in your mind about being good with your fingers as you fiddled with some more machinery. some things never changed, like your less-than-appropriate humor that either got you lighthearted scolding (from sungyoon and daeyeol, and of course, youngbin) or laughs from people who liked your occasional jokes (mostly jangjun, and surprisingly bomin too).
while examining a control panel, you felt a soft tap on your shoulder, which could only possibly belong to one person out of the group you currently lived with—lee daeyeol. he spoke with a gentle tone but it had a sense of authority. “could i talk to you for a second?”
mentally, you prepared for hell because whenever he used that familiar tone, he was being nice but definitely meant business and may the gods help whoever tried to get in his way. “of course, what did you want?”
he placed folded diagrams on the table. "i just wanted to check on your progress on that rc car, although knowing how fast you work i’m guessing you’re almost done. we've finalized a plan about how to shut off the machines.”
ah yes, he was talking about the machines of project aether, or better yet, a way for those with enough money and power to save themselves and leave the poor and helpless to rot. the act of using the oxygen on earth for airships to create a "paradise in the sky" for some while damaging the atmosphere down below made you scratch your head at the backwards logic.
it was starting to get a little sweaty in the room, and you fanned yourself with an old newspaper. "things are going well, dae. this rover should be ready in a few minutes for jaehyun and jibeom to take when they need it. better early than late. you ready to do this?"
he glanced at you, and let out a deep sigh, one filled with what you interpreted to be as deliberation. "it doesn't matter how i feel. this needs to happen soon."
as the leader of the group, daeyeol was required to handle many burdens and although you and the boys were usually with him, no one could never completely understand what was going through his mind. there was a special spark that was required to lead.
sometimes, you wondered how tired he really was, but he didn't like to show that side of him, always wanting to be the helper instead of the helped.
and of course, that reminded you of youngbin, which wasn't such a great path to take your mind to. so you'd put it upon yourself to move on from him, which you had done semi-successfully.
of course, he still had a designated space in your mind, no matter how hard you tried not to think about him.
you put down what you were working on to focus on daeyeol's words, knowing it wouldn't be good for your mind to go off on more tangents today. "alright then, let's go over the plan once more. i figure you want to run through it again. i just need to hear it too."
he nodded and opened one diagram, which you recognized as it was labeled project : aether (floor plan), with a picture of the air machine itself. you remembered researching machinery for that. he pointed to the spot where it said passcode entry point.
"because of you, seungmin and donghyun, we were able to get the password that controls the fuel source of the cities. as you know, we need to enter the password at that location in order to shut the machine off. but we're unsure of the exact situation with guards and their patrol routes, so we're going to send the rovers with the camera attached in order to assess it. the last thing we need is for there to be surprises we didn’t expect.”
he probably hadn't changed any aspects to the plan, but you asked for confirmation. "it's just you going, right?"
"yes. the rest of the group looked uncomfortable with the idea and as concerning as the idea of going alone is, i can't risk anyone else's life.” his lips set in a thin line. "and there's a limited supply of oxygen tanks, anyways."
you let out a humorless chuckle, knowing just how brutal it was out there. "dae, we're clearly not as selfless as you. no one asks to potentially get shot at by assholes in hazmat suits.”
not being able to hide your true thoughts, you quietly added, “and honestly, i’m probably the most selfish of you guys.”
out of the corner of your eye, you saw him frown. "now don’t say that, you help in your own way. you've been invaluable in developing the technology for this mission. remember, nothing goes unnoticed by me."
you still did get a little flustered whenever people mentioned your skill, and you brushed his words off with the lazy swipe of a hand. "oh, i can't take all the credit for this stuff. seungmin helped me a lot." the mentioned guy was currently fiddling with the screen on the wall to make sure it actually worked.
yeah, you knew you were decent at what you did, but it's not like you wanted the spotlight for it, preferring to remain behind the scenes most of the time. to put it simply, you liked working in the shadows and only showing up when necessary to report something.
"you sell yourself short, y/n," he said with an amused grin on his face.
"do i, dae? if you want, i could just start bragging about myself all the time."
he laughed, and oh, how you took the sound in like nourishment. true laughter was hard to come across nowadays, as a lot of things were. "now let's not jump between extremes, okay?"
you made a salute as if you were on some pirate ship. “aye-aye, captain!” damdadi was still turned on, and you maneuvered it next to daeyeol, just to demonstrate the functionality, before turning the power off.
“god, imagine being pirates. we’d be the worst pirate crew ever. imagine trying to wake up bomin and get him to do anything but sleep prettily!”
daeyeol shrugged. "well, i could probably use captain privileges to boss him around, anyways."
"as if! he listens to no one, especially you."
the two of you grinned, sharing a moment. there were times when you forgot that the air was polluted, the rich were assholes and food was hard to find—now was one of those times. it was nice to not think about that for a bit. you were aware however, that the cold reality waited around the corner like a gunman waiting to fire.
you rested your head on his shoulder, an action you had grown more comfortable with gradually after he told you it was okay to do it. it seemed to say a message without words, i don’t know what the future holds, but at least i’m here with you.
daeyeol closed his eyes and spoke his next sentence quietly. “hey, i know i told you guys i’d be prepared for anything and we're aware of how this might end. it might go badly. if i’m honest, it’s been very nerve-wracking to prepare for this. i just wanted to say that i will protect you guys. whatever it takes. i think we have a chance to end this once and for all.”
won't you protect yourself? won't you be selfish too for once? that's all i need. you thought, but didn't say aloud.
you, who never thought you'd shed a tear since getting separated from youngbin, who didn't like getting very sentimental in front of others, embraced daeyeol. "hyung, sometimes i wonder how people like you can exist, so full of hope and all that optimistic stuff. shit, i promise i don't mean it in a bad way, but...” you trailed off.
"it's hard to have hope, right?"
"you could say that."
from the moment you had met him, he had struck you as someone who wouldn’t give up. all of the group did, but especially him. to keep fighting, one had to think that things would get better someday. one needed hope.
he rested one hand on your shoulder, as if he were transferring his wisdom over to you merely by touch. “until the moment i die, i won’t stop having it. it’s the only way we’ll be able to keep pushing through. call me optimistic, but if there seems to be no hope, we have to create it for ourselves. i don't want live hopelessly knowing that i could have tried to make a better future."
you played with a screw in your jacket pocket. "hope's short in supply sometimes, i admit.”
“it is. but all you need is a bit of it to survive.”
you felt your chest rise and fall, acutely aware of your breath. if you really thought about it, it was dangerous to risk it all on one mission, a singular chance to get this right before the soldiers could wipe you all out.
but you thought of the boys you had come to know over months of time, and everything became clearer.
joochan deserved a chance to sing in air that was truly clean. donghyun would get to dance outside without fear of being shot. jibeom and jaehyun could simply mess around with the rc cars you and seungmin made instead of just sending them out into the dangerous world outside their base. most of all, daeyeol would be able to breathe easily (quite literally and metaphorically), after the mission was over.
and of course, you wanted to take that first breath of air with each and every one of them.
hope brought a world of possibilities to think about, so close and yet so far away. it would fuel you, so long as you believed it still existed—and although you didn't really consider yourself as much of an idealist as daeyeol, you needed to be, especially now.
you brought up your hands to your head, which happened to hurt a little, and his voice brought you back to the present.
“hey, y/n, you seem like you’re lost in thought. all good?”
as expected, he can tell what goes on with you.
“just thinking about our upcoming mission. can't help but stay awake...”
he frowned. “it's late, take a rest too. i can't let everyone else in the team deprive themselves of sleep. don't overwork yourself, y/n.”
and before you had known it, he left and came back with a bit of water he had saved. water was difficult to come across but the group was fortunate to have some, so you savored every drop you got to taste. “thank you, daeyeol.”
“always.”
although you continued working, you knew these coming days would be difficult, and later you finally decided to take daeyeol’s advice, eventually letting yourself slip into a dreamlike state on the smooth metal beds.
(you wouldn't have known anyways, but daeyeol glanced at you several times while you were asleep.
you'd be alright, he knew. still, it was nice for him to make sure. he smiled, and got back to work.)

[d-3]
the main room, with all 11 of the crew, wasn’t outwardly panicking, but it contained a nervous energy that simmered and quietly stirred everyone's feelings of anxiety. the crew always worked hard, but this particular week needed everyone's dedication, whether it was finding spare parts, to looking over diagrams, to last minute research.
despite these demands, you were impressed with everyone's resilience.
youngtaek shrugged his shoulders in an attempt to relieve tension. he turned on the medium-sized screen that was inside the hideout, which currently was connected to a phone you and seungmin had built together. "the camera works fine, i see the footage from it showing up.”
you sighed in relief. it was good to know that something worked.
"ow, my feet," jibeom interjected, as damdadi rolled over them.
"alright, thanks youngtaek!" jaehyun grabbed the phone from him and affixed it onto damdadi. he then gestured to jibeom. “come on, let’s go send the rc car to survey the terrain, before y/n does that annoying thing where they yell at us for using their tech all wrong.”
“okay well, you can't just use damdadi to run over jibeom's feet, we got a mission!” you yelled from across the room, where you were working on a drone.
jaehyun smiled innocently at you. "yeah, well it'll be fine and we'll get it done. i think we're very capable. or at least, i am—"
"hey, take that back!" jibeom glared at jaehyun. “i hate you."
the two continued to bicker like children. "okay. jibeom, just so you know, if the guards come and you run too slow, i will be leaving your ass behind!"
these two argue so much, it's almost as if i'm watching a tv sitcom.
"just go already, guys," you said, amused by their antics. "and don't die, of course."
“have a little faith,” jibeom whined. jaehyun laughed at him again, and with the turn of a knob, damdadi rolled to the door with them.
after they left, you went to talk to daeyeol, showing him a few of the drones you had made with seungmin. “i was thinking that i can use these to divert the soldiers' attention so that they're less likely to shoot at you. couldn't hurt, right?”
"hm, good idea, just make sure your drones take a different route to the location. you thought of me that much?" he added, lightly teasing you.
your cheeks warmed slightly, but you kept your face impassive. "well, precautions are necessary, are they not?"
he was serious, but you could sense a bit of amusement coming from him. "they are. you always think ahead, don't you?" and with that, he approved of your addition to the plan.
you let out a sigh of partial relief, and continued to test out another drone.
"just say you love him or something, because even i can tell." seungmin, who had been working next to you muttered this after daeyeol left to wake up bomin. he screwed in another bolt. "you might as well remind him before...."
he doesn't finish the sentence, but he didn't need to. the two of you looked at each other in understanding. survival was never guaranteed in a world as wrecked as this one. he looked away for a second and closed his eyes briefly before continuing to talk.
"never mind. anyways, let's just keep working—we're making good progress. after this, we'll have 4 drones to use. it’s always useful to have something that flies, i suppose."
you obliged, figuring it would be better to shut up and just continue doing what you were always good at—attempting to ignore anything not related to your job. but seungmin's words still lingered and you would do anything to get them out.
later, seeing a frightened jibeom and a tired jaehyun return with news that a soldier had captured the rc car was enough to make you quietly simmer with rage (it was precious technology, after all), but you were almost thankful for the feeling.
at least you still felt something.
Tumblr media
[d-day]
this was going to be rather interesting.
lee daeyeol was not supposed to be scared—or at least, he was not supposed to show it. in fact, he was the one whom people looked to for comfort, strength, guidance, and sacrifice (even if no one would say it aloud). if he looked scared, it would set the tone for this mission. who would believe in them? in their cause?
so he shouldered his burden of shutting off the machines of project: aether with calm determination, trying to steady himself despite his accelerating heart rate and the vague feeling of the world swaying beneath his feet. “i’m going out the route we discussed. send the drones out a different exit and wait for the radio signal from me to go up. if something unexpected happens, only one of you should check first."
"got it. stay safe, hyung." sungyoon checked daeyeol's oxygen's tank one last time, sighing to himself.
daeyeol looked to you, a hint of sadness in his eyes. "do you have the ring?"
you wordlessly got up to grab daeyeol's ring from the table, and watched as he slipped it on carefully. the piece of jewelry was special for him, as it was a gift from a childhood friend he had kept for his whole life.
to him, it signified many things, but he could never deny the fact seeing the ring gave him hope.
your voice was soft yet full of conviction as you gave him words of reassurance. "stay strong. we'll be waiting. but even if you don't return, i want to thank you, for everything. i love you, in every sense of the word."
daeyeol closed his eyes. you weren't usually the sentimental type.
it was times like this where he found it hard to walk away. if he let his heart take over, he would stay safe with you against the harsh reality of the world. but he knew that first, he had to carry out his plan.
he extended his arms towards you, pulling you into a tight hug. "you as well, y/n. remember, i'll be with you, always."
he double-checked the levels in his oxygen tank, affirming that they were alright. now, it really was time to go.
"if you don't stay safe, hyung, i'll kick your ass all the way to the sky," jangjun yelled.
"got it," he said, a small grin on his face. of course jangjun would be the one to joke around.
and with that, he turned away, walking towards the entrance of your hideout with conviction. the doors opened, and he stepped out, leaving behind the people he loved most. it would be painful for him to turn around now, and so he chose not to.
at least, if he thought of his team, full of people he wanted to give the world to, he had something tangible to fight for.
as daeyeol left, the 10 of you stared at the door and no one dared say a thing, for fear of it being wrong, but a distinct sigh came from bomin, who could not hide his frustration as the youngest. that's when you knew it was time to do your part, just as daeyeol would do his.
slightly trembling, you got into position and used the camera on the one of the drones to help examine its surroundings and navigate it through the twists and turns of the hide out.
sungyoon, much to everyone’s surprise, stood up a minute later. “i'm not letting him do this alone. lee daeyeol, i swear if you go alone at this point.."
"take care, hyung," bomin said.
he nodded in response.
you buried your head in your hands. it's not like you needed his life at risk too. but sungyoon could be rather stubborn at times, and you weren't trying to argue with him at a time like this.
besides, it's not like he couldn't handle himself out there.
he went to grab an oxygen tank, put its heavy weight on his back, and exited the hideout. but with his running skills, the team knew he would catch up to daeyeol soon enough.
Tumblr media
outside, the chemicals in the air gave the impression that everything was a fatal orange, the orange that burned from that pillar of fire daeyeol saw in the distance. it seemed like it would burn straight to his soul and consume him.
but daeyeol found he could run faster than even he anticipated, fueled by a fire of his own.
above the flames, the floating paradise of the rich taunted him, as if they were situated in the heavens and looking down upon people like him, those who couldn't make it up there with what they had in their pockets.
those who were left to perish amongst the ashes.
daeyeol kept going.
unbeknownst to him, sungyoon was making his way over, navigating past abandoned trailers and trying not to alert the presence of any guards—he was quite aware of their patrol routes now.
after a few minutes, he found daeyeol, whispering, “hyung. i’m here."
the older boy looked over in surprise. "now that i think about it, i'm not surprised."
sungyoon's presence had revitalized him completely, a blessing that he wasn't to take lightly. daeyeol gave sungyoon a nod of acknowledgment, and they headed for the passcode entry point together.
as they did, a group of 3 soldiers ran across an elevated ledge.
"we gotta go!" dayeol exclaimed, pointing upwards. they sprinted towards the tower that felt so close, and yet, was still feet away.
a bullet punctured sungyoon's oxygen tank, and the hiss of air leaking out could be heard.
shit, daeyeol thought. he needed to do something, and quick.
they took cover some medium-sized storage crates as he removed his oxygen mask and put it over sungyoon's face, transferring the tank as well.
then, covering his mouth, he ran as fast as he could towards the tower. only a few feet away the tower, the soldiers shot him in the back. and yet he ran, bleeding through his denim jacket.
he inputted the correct code into the security screen.
3-2-6-4.
as sungyoon rushed over to him, daeyeol pushed the lever to shut off the tower off with all of his remaining strength. the pillar of fire emerging from the tower's base shut off, and the smoke in the area began to dissipate.
"you really did it, hyung." sungyoon said, looking around in awe. he sat beside daeyeol. the older boy smiled back.
i can rest, at least sungyoon is fine. no one else had to suffer.
he blinked several times to try and stay awake as sungyoon took off his vest, pressing lightly against one of daeyeol's wounds.
Tumblr media
a few minutes earlier...
back at the base, your body felt frozen, except for your fingers, which were the only thing moving. it was quite difficult to steer a drone with the intense weather conditions outside and turmoil within you. but this was your responsibility, and you had to carry it out to the end.
"maybe a little higher," you muttered to yourself as the drone continued to fly. there was a smaller phone next to you, which allowed you to see out of the tiny camera on the drone. seungmin, tag and bomin had drones too.
“i see guards.” seungmin said sharply. “oh wait, i think daeyeol and sungyoon are in the distance too.”
jangjun spoke up. "okay, i'm going up to the warehouse building. i just need to safely observe what's happening outside in case your drones go down."
"someone, hand him a radio! i only have mine." seungmin yelled. "and remember, keep yourself hidden."
donghyun gave the remote to jangjun, who thanked him and left the base quickly.
amidst the chaos, you continued to maneuver the drone, trying to stay in control. the guards appeared to aim their guns in the general direction of the tower, which was where daeyeol and sungyoon were headed to.
you knew the guards were mostly there to prevent people like you guys from shutting off all the technology rich people had paid for. disgusting and vile.
“ah, shit, gotta steer away from there,” you muttered, your hand grasping the right controller stick. the drone flew slightly off to the side, and from what you could make out, the direction some of the guns were firing in changed.
oh god. there's a ton of soldiers. damn.
in all honesty, what happened next was chaos. a few of the screens lost connection. on a screen that was still intact, you saw blood, or at least, you thought you did.
the world blurred around you, but then came into focus again, but you knew that you couldn't collapse, not now. thankfully, your bottle had some water left.
"something's wrong," you say, fidgeting with your hands.
"of course something is wrong!" seungmin said, groaning. "what the hell is happening?"
youngtaek observed the surrounding area through his drone, but soon he had to find somewhere to land it, making sure it was well out of view before doing so.
he groaned shortly after. "great, the camera on the drone is almost dead. but from what i was able to see outside, i can tell someone shot sungyoon and daeyeol as they were headed over. i don't think they'll be coming back soon," he remarked. "so, maybe three to five of us should go out and help. we'll need to treat any wounds."
"do we even have enough medical supplies for this?" you asked, your mind racing. you began to sort through the stuff in the emergency backpack, making sure you could pack as much as possible.
shit. are daeyeol and sungyoon going to die? damn it, those two—
your thoughts were interrupted because over the radio, jangjun’s voice resounded, loud, clear and... somewhat excited? “come. look outside. i can't fucking believe it! we’ll finally be able to breathe the fucking air! you gotta see for yourselves! oh my god... is this real?”
his voice got faint, so you assumed he was busy staring at the sky, and how could you blame him?
everyone looked at each other with shock and disbelief. it's been a while since you've stared out the windows of the warehouse, but whenever you did, it was always the same—a sea of orange and the menacing presence of security drones. seeing something different would be a relief, a sign that daeyeol had gotten the job done after all.
still, you didn't want to be get too excited.
seungmin spoke into the radio. "alright, be there soon, hyung, but we have to go check on daeyeol and sungyoon afterwards. by the way, stop cursing so much, you potty-mouth.”
you heard a crackling sound before he responded, “fuck no.”
ha, he certainly is something.
afterwards, you took the radio, greeting jangjun with a laugh.
"hey, jangjun! is the air really as clear as you say it is?" you said, rolling your eyes. "you get fired up so easily and exaggerate. how do we tell you're not just messing with us?"
jangjun sighed once, one of those sassy why-don't-you-listen-because-i'm-right type of sighs. "just look at the damn sky before you come out, okay? i took off my mask and it felt okay, but don't take my word for it. bring the surgical masks if you're really worried."
you shrugged. "we'll be there. but let's be careful."
then, talking to the rest of the team, you said, "help me grab medical supplies and weapons. once we meet jangjun and get outside, we have to make sure there are no soldiers or drones."
"alright, i'll go ahead with jaehyun to go check on daeyeol and sungyoon and give them necessary medical attention," youngtaek said.
you found a pistol and picked it up. "got it."
"found the surgical masks!" jaehyun exclaimed.
everyone headed out, feeling mixed emotions of fear and anticipation. bomin was by your side. “y/n, will it be okay?”
to be honest, you weren’t the greatest at comforting people, but you tried your best. he was the youngest, and although you knew he was an adult and could handle himself, you still had a bit of a parental instinct.
“i don’t know. i trust that they did their job. we can have a bit of hope, can’t we?”
“yeah. i guess we can.” his breathing became steadier, and you were grateful.
soon enough, you were ascending the steps of what used to be functional escalators. light shone through the tinted glass ceiling, so oddly colored and dirtied that it was difficult to tell what life was like on the outside.
jangjun was leaning against a column, his gaze turned towards a sky that was finally more blue than orange for the first time, devoid of the flame tower in the air that everyone had grown so accustomed to.
you walked beside him, quietly waiting for him to acknowledge your presence. while continuing to stare, he shook his head rapidly, as if trying to wake up from a dream. "i still can't believe it. damn. it seemed like yesterday that there were drones swarming outside the window."
you laughed. "believe what? that we're alive? that this stupid machine is off? that the sky is blue?"
"all of it."
it was rare to see jangjun's contemplative side, but it was certainly present right now. you weren't sure that you believed it either. maybe you dreamt this entire incident up too. unless anyone said otherwise, though, this was real.
you shrugged. "well, there's been crazier things in this world."
"you're damn right about that."
the crew talked quietly amongst themselves, not wanting to ruin the atmosphere that was established by the strange stillness outside the window.
"i think we should go out now." seungmin said to the group, still in a state of shock.
everyone walked out towards an outside balcony where people probably used to hang out long before you were alive. apparently there was a time when the outside air wasn't so dangerous.
as you stepped out of the building, you found a place to stand. after a few minutes, you felt comfortable removing your mask.
you took a breath in, slowly. then, you exhaled. surprised at how easy and yet difficult it was, you repeated the action. it wasn't perfect air—the atmosphere would probably never return to 100% normal—but it was certainly something.
you tried to spot the telltale red lights of enemy drones, but you couldn't find any, to your shock.
there'd be no point in sending them anyways, you surmised. the job's been done.
of course, your heart felt conflicted with the absence of sungyoon and daeyeol, especially the latter. you'd need to check on them soon, just to see how they were doing in person.
you leaned against a white ledge, alone with your thoughts for just a second.
it'll be okay. surely, they'll be okay, you thought, trying to be optimistic.
and yet, there was still a part of you that wondered if you would find their lifeless bodies. but even that would be better than not finding them at all.
that's highely unlikely, of course you'll find them.
you looked at joochan, who had found a place beside you. he was humming softly. the two of you weren't as close (hey, it was hard to get to know the ten others in your crew equally), but you knew he loved music and saw it as his life. through song, you felt as though you understood whatever emotions he wanted to convey.
"wow, i think i'm dreaming," he says, his words riding softly on the breeze. "i never really understood why people sang songs about blue skies until now."
you laughed, despite yourself. "you're not the first to think that we're dreaming. maybe we'll wake up in a few minutes. but for now, this is our reality."
you heard youngtaek's voice over the walkie talkie in your hand. "daeyeol was shot in the back, so he's our priority right now. sungyoon's not in critical condition, but he does have a few bruises and needs to rest as well. make sure you secure the area you're in—we'll let you know when we're done here."
conversation broke out amongst the group.
"why did he do this by himself again?"
"i can't believe it..."
"hyung, you really are crazy for doing this."
meanwhile, you tried to process the news yourself. you weren't doubtful of youngtaek and jaehyun's medical capabilities, but after hearing about this, you knew that it would take a while for him to heal.
you told the group that you were going to go check how sungyoon and daeyeol were faring while they finished scanning the area.
after crossing between a maze of storage crates and covering a long stretch of flat land, you finally made it to the base of the tall tower.
despite all of the hardships you had been through, the sight of the tower without a flame made you smile, even if just for a second.
you spotted daeyeol sitting on the stone floor, his back against the control panel and sungyoon beside him. jaehyun and youngtaek were busy giving them medical treatment. they were obscured on two sides by large crates, which was good.
you were glad sungyoon and daeyeol had survived, but you couldn’t stand to see them in pain, especially your leader.
it only made you feel like you had failed as a companion in protecting him.
first, you talked to sungyoon, who seemed to have a few bruises and was panting heavily, but otherwise, seemed to be alright. he stood up
"i'm glad the two of you weren't alone," you said to him.
sungyoon nods. "he says he can do things alone, and although it's probably true, i wanted to be by his side."
you think of youngbin, and how you lost him. the feeling of deep loyalty isn't unfamiilar to you.
"i... understand."
you wish you were still by youngbin's side.
"here's some water," jaehyun said to sungyoon. luckily, he was able to drink on his own.
next, you looked over at daeyeol, whose eyes were set in a solemn gaze.
on closer inspection, you examined blood trickling from several places in his body. you hated seeing him like this, wanting to give him whatever strength you had.
you approached him slowly, not wanting to overwhelm him. “hi, daeyeol. how are you holding up?”
his response came in slow, short sentences. “i'm fine, for now. need… water. it’s good... to see you, y/n.”
you pulled an extra bottle of water out of your bag and slowly poured it in his mouth. you weren't the medical authority amongst your team, but you knew it wouldn't be good if he was required to move, considering the fact that he had been shot.
“it's good to see you too.” you laid a hand on his shoulder and continued speaking softly. you wanted to envelop him in a bone-crushing hug, but you were sure there'd be time for that when he was fully healed.
when, not if, right?
“i know you're probably thinking about the next step in all this, but.." you hesitated. "let us take care of you a while longer. you've already done so much for us."
he laughed, the sound strained. "i won't do anything drastic, don't worry."
you sat down in front of him, fingertips inches away from his. suddenly, you were a little tired as well. "please, let me know if there's anything that you need.
daeyeol took your hand. "you're here... for me, that's enough."
the golden ring on his hand glimmered in the sunlight. he said it reminded him of many things—your team, as his duty as a leader, the memories you've all shared.
you had always been more of a realist. youngbin was too, accepting that things were the way they were, and taught you that there wasn't much you could do except try to survive another day and solve things practically.
but daeyeol taught you something too, that hope was something that could be cultivated, even in the face of struggle. you took a glance at your friends, feeling a weight lift off of your shoulders.
no, problems weren't going to magically disappear. wounds took time to heal. work still needed to be done. you could lose it all at any moment. it was scary, to not know what came after this moment.
but as long as you had a heartbeat, as long as you were alive, you could have hope, even if it was faint.
"yes," you said, gazing at the endless sky above you. "it's enough."

“You guys are cowards!” You said, crossing your arms against your chest and a wide pout spreading on your pinkish lips. “We’re not cowards! We just have a huge respect towards heights.” Sungyoon said, patting your head making you sway away from his soft and teasing touch. “It’s not that high.” You answered back at your older brother who had that devilish smile painted on his lips, the devilish smile you always hated. You couldn’t help rolling your eyes at his expression, making your older brother and Bomin laugh at your cute and mad figure. “Come on, don’t look at us like that.” Bomin said, trying to calm down your anger towards Sungyoon.
It felt like any other day in your life with them. After all, the three of you have been together since you were born. Bomin being your brother’s best friend before you were born, made things even easier for you to be part of their beautiful and never ending friendship. And as time went by, it also contributed to you having a crush on Bomin since teenage days. At first, you swore it was just the close friendship you both had, always denying having strong feelings towards him whenever Sungyoon asked you about it. But soon, you could notice the strong feeling blooming in your heart whenever Bomin landed on your gaze, it was far away similar to the feelings you felt when you were with other friends.
But what could you do? Even though you found yourself catching feelings towards your brother’s and your own best friend, how were you supposed to tell him your feelings? What if you confessed your feelings and he rejected you? How would you be able to keep acting the same way you have been acting all these years? It was impossible and if american movies taught you something, dating your best friend never ended well.
“Come on, quit looking at us with that gaze full of anger. Here, go buy some cotton candy.” Sungyoon said knocking you out of your thoughts and handing you a bill so you could buy the quintessential candy for all three. “Fine.” You said, taking the bill from his warm hand and walked towards the little tent that was selling fresh cotton candy.
“Are you going to ask her out already?” Sungyoon asked as soon as you walked away but not before checking that you were far enough to not hear their little conversation. “What? All of a sudden?” Bomin asked, startled because of his friend’s question. He would have never imagined Sungyoon would ask him such kind of questions so suddenly, especially when you, his little sister, were the main answer to all of them. “I’m tired of third wheeling you two whenever we hang out without an official reason. Just ask her out and live the happy life you have always dreamt about.” Sungyoon said, encouraging his young friend to finally confess his feelings towards you. “It’s not that easy…” Bomin said, a nervous giggle escaping his lips as he avoided Sungyoon’s gaze as his ears turned red in embarrassment. “I’ll go home earlier, that way you’ll be able to be alone and it’ll be easier.” Sungyoon whispered, winking at him before you handed him his cotton candy. “What will be easier?” You asked confused after hearing the last words your brother said. “Get you to pay for dinner next time we hang out. Bomin paid for dinner, I paid for the cotton candy. It’s your turn next time.” Sungyoon said, perfectly covering his little plan and making you laugh and avoiding the topic to hopefully make them forget that little detail for the next time you go out.
Hours kept going by and even though you couldn’t convince them to get on any of the fair attractions due to their “huge respect to heights”, you had to admit you had a pretty lovely and funny time with them, making every single second you spent together more than worth it. “I should get going, I have to work on an assignment for college.” Sungyoon suddenly said, looking at Bomin with piercing eyes to make sure he understood what he really meant. “Are you seriously going to ruin the night again for your assignments?” You complained. It was early, the sun just got settled and the night just started. You wanted to stay for a little bit longer to enjoy a bit more of Bomin's presence, completely unable to get enough from him. “You guys can stay. But don’t come back too late.” Sungyoon said, pulling you into a warm hug and leaving a soft peck on your temple before waving a goodbye to both of you. “What’s wrong with him?” You asked Bomin, the word ‘confused’ written all over your face. But to your surprise, Bomin’s face had the word ‘embarrassment’ written on it. His ears turned light red, resembling the bright lights from the different attractions, making you laugh at how cute he looked, never being able to hide when he felt shy.
Even though you could notice how nervous and shy he became as soon as your brother left, you both had to admit that you had a pretty lovely time with him. Especially, the fact of being alone together made everything more… romantic. Like if you were a real couple dating at the annual town fair. You just felt alive once again, something you haven’t been able to feel lately because of how stressed you were because of college and the relationship you started to have with your brother.
“I had a lot of fun today.” Bomin said once you arrived in front of your apartment front door. “I enjoyed it a lot too. Even though I couldn’t try any of the attractions.” You said giggling, making him laugh as well at the fact of them being too scared to go on an attraction with you. “I want to tell you something before you go in…” Bomin suddenly said, already avoiding your shiny gaze. You looked at him with curious eyes, not really knowing what was going through his mind. You could always read Bomin’s mind like an open book but tonight, it has been really hard to guess his thoughts throughout the entire day, like he built a wall for you to not read it anymore. “I would like to go out with you more… Without Sungyoon… More like a couple instead of friends…” Bomin finally said. Your eyes went wide unconsciously at his words. You would have never imagined Bomin felt that way towards you. Maybe in another situation, you would have answered listening to your mind more than listening to your heart but today, for some reason, everything felt so right and your heart was shouting ‘accept him’ at the top of its lungs. “I would also like to do that.” You finally said, a huge weight lifting from your chest, freeing you once and for all from that stupid weight you have been carrying for the last 3 years.
“Come in already, you’ll catch a cold.” You heard Sungyoon’s voice from behind before your lips could meet Bomin’s. You clenched your fist, wanting to punch your older brother for breaking such a beautiful moment. “He’s right, I don’t want you to get sick.” Bomin said, cupping your cheeks and kissing your forehead with a lovely peck full of care and love. And with that, he left and faded into the night as he walked towards his apartment a few streets away from yours. “You’re dead.” You said, death glaring at your older brother as you entered the small house. “You should be grateful! If it weren’t because of your amazing older brother that kid would have never confessed.” Sungyoon said, closing the front door and running towards you with a proud smile and curious eyes waiting for you to tell him absolutely everything like you used to do before your parents passed away in that car accident.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” You asked, looking down at your brother who was patiently waiting for you to talk, laying down on the couch next to you. “Do we really have to have this conversation?” You asked once you noticed his gaze and perfectly understood what he was waiting for. “Yes we do.” He said, his proud smile widening a bit more if it was even possible. “Fine… What do you want?” You said, turning around to face him fully and admire the galaxy his orbs held. It’s been ages since the last time you saw it. Even though you hated to admit it, you miss that special gleam in his eyes. You missed the night talks you had with your brother before the accident happened. You miss being his little sister and best friend.
Hours went by but you both were so immersed in your conversation that you didn’t care it was past midnight. You started telling him all your feelings from Bomin but, somehow, you both ended up talking about your feelings about life during the last few years. When you both were kids, it was pretty usual for you to sit down together and talk about your day or how you felt about certain situations. You both were inseparable. But when your parents passed away, your relationship got worse and those conversations and laughs were replaced by fights and shouts. “We should go to sleep, it’s late.” Sungyoon said, cleaning his glasses that were dirty because of the tears he shed because of laughing. “Thank you.” You suddenly said, hugging him tightly, something you haven’t done in the past 4 years. He was surprised at your sudden action but he didn’t hesitate to hug you back. “Go to sleep, I won’t wake up earlier just to wake you up so you don’t arrive late to college.” He said, pressing a loving kiss on the top of your head before taking you to bed. “Good night, bunny.” You quietly said before he could close the door of your bedroom. Those words pierced his heart like a knife, triggering tons of memories from your childhood. You used to call him like that when you were kids and he accepted playing with you at tea time because your favorite movie was Alice in Wonderland. “Good night, little one.” He said, making you smile unconsciously at the memory of him sitting in front of you, serving some imaginary tea and calling you ‘little one’.
A few hours went by and you were lost deep into slumber dreaming about something you cannot really remember. The only thing you can remember is that you were sleeping with so much peace, like you haven’t been able to sleep in the past years. Everything felt so good and peaceful and finally, not only your body but your soul was taking a well deserved rest. But unfortunately that peace didn’t last for too long.
“Sungyoon, what's going on?” You asked scared. A strong bomb sound pulled you out of your slumber making you feel scared and confused. “I don’t know but there’s something clearly wrong out there.” Sungyoon said, running towards your bed to check you were okay. Once he made sure you were okay and the only bad thing going on with you was that you were extremely terrified, he went downstairs to grab the phone and try to call someone. But it was useless. Whatever that explosion was, it destroyed every single signal from phones and TVs. “Stay here, I’ll go out for a while to see if I can figure out what happened. Under no circumstances leave this house. Shut the blinders and if anybody rings the doorbell do not open it until I come back, okay?” Sungyoon said, grabbing a bag and a lantern to go out of the house. “Can you go check on Bomin?” You asked. Your hands were trembling and you couldn’t believe the best day of your life was the beginning of your worst nightmare. “I will, don’t worry. Remember, don’t open the door to anybody, I have my keys so I won’t need to knock on the door. I’ll be back in an hour.” Sungyoon said, pulling you into a tight hug before leaving to find out what your worst nightmare looked like.

Genre: fluff - non idol au Sungyoon x reader - warnings: none
Maybe, just maybe being late to work was worth it. Meeting a cute boy from wrong orders of coffee has its perks. Yes you got the wrong coffee and they have to remake it since the both of you already tried the drinks so it wasn't sanitary. But atleast a sweet interaction came to be.
"Well your coffee taste isn't too bad actually." The pretty boy said with a smile.
"Yours isn't bad either! I'll have to try it again sometime." You said with a small laugh
"By the way what's your name?" He said with curiosity laced in his voice.
"y/n, and yours?"
"Sungyoon, You know I was actually interested in being a barista once but I opted against it."
"Hmm being a barista seems to have its perks but I'm sticking with my retail job, retail and drinks too stressful for me." You laughed lightly. He seemed to smile as he heard your laugh.
"Not to be too forward, but can I get your number?"
"As long as you promise me coffee could've been barista boy~" You said with a daring face. He laughed at your words. Taking out his phone he handed it to you as you put in your number in his contacts.
Maybe getting yelled at by your boss will be worth it.

day dream | bomin
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the image of you - your face, your smile, your voice - is so vivid in bomin's dream, but he's never met you before.
genre: fluff, slight angst, suggestive
word count: 1.1k
author lin
Bomin dragged his long fingers against the soft, white walls of the tunnel through which he was walking. The walls bared a pillow-like texture and the white abyss engulfed Bomin, never seeming to end. Bomin's legs grew tired and he decided to take a seat.
Unconsciously, Bomin let his body fall back onto the walls of the tunnel. Soon enough, the walls swallowed him whole, causing him to kick and scream in agony. He could barely breathe as the warm, marshmallow-like material of the walls wrapped around his body. Suddenly, he felt a tug at his ankle. He was being pulled out of the wall slowly, every inch of his body letting out a sigh of relief as he was released from the clenches of the wall.
Bomin gasped for air once he was completely out of the wall, breathing heavily as he got to his feet. He lifted his head up to see you staring up at him. Your hair swept over your face and your eyes were bright and filled with with curiosity. A smile was plastered on you face, slightly showing off your teeth. Bomin couldn't recognise you, but his heart fluttered at how charming you were.
"Hello..." You greeted Bomin sweetly, the smile never faltering.
"Hi," Bomin replied gingerly, rubbing his elbow in embarrassment, "who are you?"
"______," you answered, "what's yours?"
"Bomin," he nodded before smiling sheepishly, "thanks for saving me."
"It's no big deal," you shrugged nonchalantly, "hey, do you want me to show you something cool?"
"Uh.... sure?" Bomin replied, his voice laced with unsureness.
You turned on your heels and walked down the tunnel and into the darkness with the expectation that Bomin would follow. Bomin lived up to this expectation by chasing after you until he was walking right next to you in the abyss. The two of you were completely blind in the pitch black darkness of the tunnel. Bomin jumped when he felt something brush against his hand.
"Shh, it's just me." He heard you whisper before he felt a hand intertwine with his.
Bomin made no sort of protest to holding your hand. In fact, he rather liked the feeling. You both walked hand in hand through the tunnel until you reached the exit and your vision returned. You let go of Bomin's hand - much to Bomin's disappointment - and rushed out of the tunnel.
"Isn't it beautiful?" You gushed as you spread your arms out and deeply breathed in the fresh air.
The crisp green grass was still drenched in morning dew. The flowers were blooming and the trees were abundant with fruit. Down the bank was a breathtaking river so clear one could see their own reflection in it. Birds were chirping softly in the distance. Indeed it was beautiful. Bomin stepped out of the tunnel, his bare feet pressed against the grass and his dark hair danced with the subtle breeze. He took in the mesmerizing scenery before his eyes fell onto you.
His new companion was sprawled out on the grass, your eyes closed and a satisfied smile still pasted on your face. Bomin sat cross legged on the ground next to you, unable to take his eyes off of you.
"Staring is rude." you snapped Bomin out of his daze and chuckled when you saw the colour of Bomin's cheeks turn pink.
"You're just..." Bomin started but couldn't find the words to finish his sentence.
You laughed once again, finding much amusement in Bomin's embarrassment, and it was like the sweetest melody to his ears. You sat up and faced him. Your eyes scanned him as he kept his eyes on the ground. You studied the strong and handsome features of Bomin's face and absentmindedly, your hand began to inch forward to touch him.
"Beautiful." Bomin's gentle voice brought an even bigger smile to your face as you touched his cheek.
You leaned forward, your eyes closed and your hand bringing his face closer to your own. Unconsciously, Bomin found himself closing his eyes and leaning in as well. The gap between your lips began to decrease with each small movement. Slowly, but surely, you pressed your lips against his. Bomin inhaled the smell of your perfume and melted into the touch of your hands cupping his face.
His hands shakily found their way to your sides, rubbing up and down over the fabric of your shirt. You climbed into his lap, letting your hands rest on his chest as he laid his body down on the lush grass. You straddled his waist, his hands clutching almost desperately onto your thighs as your hands danced all over his torso. A gasp escaped his lips when your cold fingers came into contact with his tummy, going lower and lower….
Bomin bolted up from his bed, the sound of his alarm breaking him away from his slumber. He reached over to his night stand and turned his alarm off. Sweat dripped down from his temple as he placed a hand on his chest, trying his best to calm down his frantically beating heart.
His dream was so vivid. He swore it felt like reality. But once he woke up, he realized his imagination had played a horrible trick on him. He had no idea who you were and he would probably never see you again...
+++++
Bomin hugged his large, black coat closer to his body as the harsh wind blew him mercilessly towards the other direction. He trudged down the pavement whilst the wind refused to let him move any further, let alone walk, but he battled it out until he reached the nearest coffee shop. He slipped through the transparent doors and they slammed behind him at the hands of the wicked wind.
"I'll have a medium sized americano please." He ordered with a smile, but his smile disappeared as soon as he made eye contact with the person at the counter.
"That'll be 1,000 won, sir." You grinned, showing off the same toothy smile that Bomin knew he had definitely seen before, despite not knowing you at all.
Bomin paid for his order, his eyes never leaving you even as he waited for his drink. He looked at the your name tag and his stomach did a flip when it read '______'.
"Uh I know this is weird but, can I get your number?" Bomin asked shyly as he collected his drink from you.
"Umm, sure?" you shrugged as you took Bomin's till slip and wrote down your number, "what's your name?"
"Bomin." He smiled and you suddenly had butterflies in your abdomen.
"Nice to meet you, Bomin." you smiled, your bright eyes making Bomin's heart race.
"Nice to meet you too, ______."

Title: To Be Human
Pairing: Bomin x gender neutral!reader
Word count: 1.1k
Triggers: mentions of a gunshot (nothing graphic)
~
Bomin sits still as you bend over the wires sparking from his split chest, skin filaments torn and frayed, the metal underneath crushed and bent. Both of you remain silent - your focus is on not reconnecting the wrong wires, while he's probably thinking deeply about something he won't tell you. Something profound, probably, if the look in his eyes is anything to go by.
That's normal. Being an android, he's a lot smarter than you, after all.
But this silence... he's thinking something profound, but it's not about the answer to the universe like Daeyeol was teasing a few weeks ago. Not this time, just a few hours after a fight that nearly took the two of you out. You have an idea of his thoughts but you don't want to voice them for fear of being wrong, for fear of making the silence worse, for fear of losing Bomin completely if you say the wrong thing -
"You should take care of your own wounds first."
"Stars above!" The pliers slip between your fingers and fall to the floor with a clattering thud. "Stars, Bomin, give me some warning -"
Then his words register, and the silence falls once more.
You break it this time, picking up the pliers and returning to the wires still intermittently sparking where his heart would be. You can talk while you work - there's no time to waste, not when Bomin also has a shattered wrist that needs a lot of attention too. "I'm fine," you say, focusing on not letting the sparks touch your skin. "I only have scratches. You took the brunt of it." You look up. "You've got to stop doing that for me."
Bomin blinks once, slow, not the usual ten-times-a-minute blink that's been programmed into his system. The profound look on his face disappears, replaced for a moment by confusion. "Why?"
A gunshot cracks through the air. You watch as though in slow motion as the bullet makes its arc, speeding toward your chest -
The unmistakable sound of metal collapsing and crumpling in on itself fills your ears, and a scream builds in your throat as you watch Bomin fall to the ground and crush his wrist, chest blown open with wires sparking everywhere.
Not real. Not now, at least. You jerk yourself out of the memory and try to breathe. Breath comes in short gasps, air barely filling your lungs - you can feel the remnants of that scream ripping your throat apart as you watched him fall, sure that he was dead even though you knew he wouldn't be unless his personality chip exploded which it couldn't because you'd modified him in such a way that it would be almost impossible to hit it without knowing exactly where it was -
"Y/N?"
A hand settles on your cheek, skin filaments so real, so warm, so comforting against your face. You squeeze your eyes shut hard and then open them to see Bomin staring at you with worry, his undamaged hand touching your skin.
He's alive. Bomin is alive. You swallow hard, turning away from the gentle hand long enough to notice your own fingers are shaking. With surgical precision, you put the pliers down on the floor, like they'll blow up the way Bomin's chest did even though they're not nearly the same thing.
"When I saw you fall," you say, voice more ragged than you'd like it to be, "I thought you were dead."
Bomin blinks. "But I wasn't. The bullet didn't hit my personality chip."
"It almost hit your power source," you say, pointing into the thicket of wires and metal just visible beyond the hole in his chest. "And yes, even though it didn't hit your personality chip... if you'd lost power, it would have been disastrous. You know that."
"I wouldn't be dead, though." He blinks. "I'm not human. I'm an android."
Something in his voice sounds wrong when he says that. It brings back your musings about the profound look on his face just a few minutes ago, musings that you didn't want to say out loud for fear that you'd unintentionally push him away...
"Who said that?" you ask softly, raising one of your hands to Bomin's fingers still on your cheek. Slowly, you bring it down, holding the hand between your own.
Bomin looks down at the hand encased in yours. He doesn't speak for a very long moment. "I'm an android," he finally repeats. "I'm wires and metal. Not flesh and blood."
A lump begins to form in your throat. "And?"
"What do you mean, and?" For a moment, Bomin looks truly angry. "I'm not human!"
"Are you telling me you don't have feelings?"
He blinks. Once. Twice. Then -
"I don't know." His voice doesn't crack, but perhaps if his vocal cords weren't made of metal, it would. "I don't know, Y/N, I'm an android, I'm not supposed to feel emotions, so I can't tell if anything I'm supposedly feeling is actually real -"
"I didn't program those feelings into you," you interrupt. Stars above, how long has he been holding this in? "No one did."
"Because I'm faulty." His words are bleak, barren. "A faulty personality chip."
"No."
He looks at you.
"Not faulty. Not even broken." Your eyes don't leave his. "Just you."
Bomin doesn't say anything.
"I think that... more than flesh and blood, more than whatever scientists classify as 'life' in the barest sense... our actions are what make us human." You squeeze his hand slightly and feel relieved when he doesn't pull away. "Feel free to take this with a grain of salt. I'm no philosopher. But..." The lump in your throat is making it really hard to continue. "When you took that bullet for me today, even knowing that there was only the tiniest chance that it would truly decimate you forever..."
The hand between yours pulls away. You almost panic but then it begins to rise, slow, steady, to brush away a tear you didn't even know had fallen down your face.
"When you took that shot for me, that was human, Bomin." Your eyes burn, but you force yourself to hold his gaze. "Being human... it means we care for people. Care for each other."
The lump in your throat won't go away. You have to fight to speak. "What I'm trying to say is you're human to me." Swallowing keeps getting progressively harder. "And I care about you. So please..."
Bomin's fingers are still on the side of your face, brushing the tears away.
"Don't do that again." Your voice finally cracks. "Because I couldn't stand to lose you."

team captain // choi bomin
Tumblr media
🌟 pairing:: choi bomin x reader 🌟 genre:: fluff, angst, everything tbh, volleyball player!bomin 🌟 summary:: the boy that everyone was in love with. the boy that everyone thought was absoultely perfect, it turns out that maybe he isn’t so perfect. but that’s the reason why you loved him. wait-
a/n: i like this but i don’t know if i do u feel? ——————————————————————————
he was the star volleyball player that everyone thought was perfect because of his background, the way he played, just everything about him but the thing is, not everything about him was so perfect. i wish i didn’t have to find out this way but i did. i remember that day so clearly because i wish i never walked into the room at that moment. i wish i never had anything to do with the boy named choi bomin, the fucking varsity volleyball team captain.
it all started last year when he finally became captain. every girl on campus came to watch him and only him. i was always forced to go by my friends, and it just so happened that one game changed my entire school life. i was on my phone because i honestly could care less about volleyball but when i looked up, he caught my eye. i wouldn’t stop watching him the entire rest of the game. of course i’ve seen him around campus, but i had to admit he was good looking. wrong. he was devastatingly gorgeous. at the end of his game, he looked up into the stands, made eye contact with me before winking.
Tumblr media
for the rest of the week i didn’t say anything to anyone about it because for sure it would cause chaos. as if bomin didn’t smirk or wink at me every time he saw me in the hallways. at first i thought it wasn’t me he was looking at but i soon realized that it happened every time he was near me. i didn’t know why he decided to choose me, but i didn’t hate it. no one had to know that though.
“y/n can you go get me my notebook for me please? i left it on the table during class.” mina smiled at me from across the room because she was in a zoom meeting and wasn’t allowed to leave the screen. i rolled my eyes because she made me get off my bed to walk all the way back to the lecture hall.
“do you need anything else your majesty?” i scoffed when she gasped saying that she wanted me to bring food for her. when i walked over there, i put both headphones in playing a song that i was obsessed with for a while now, breathe by golden child. as i slowly walked up to the hallway, there was a professor causing me to yank my headphones out of my ears. i said hello then walked into the room but slowly walked back out when i saw bomin and one of our professors. we had three or four classes together and he would either sit in front of me, behind me, but never beside me.
“just because you’re the team captain, and your parents pay for every major donation to the university won’t help your grades okay bomin? your grades need to rise because if they don’t, i don’t think volleyball is something you should be doing right now.” this professor was new, and she was very brave to be able to even say that to bomin. everyone knew that if you spoke back to bomin he would do anything and everything to get them fired. she wasn’t even a little bit scared.
“i can just do better on the next test what’s the point of this?” when he replied, i hid around the corner of the door trying not to seem like i was eavesdropping on their conversation. i felt that i shouldn’t be listening to this, because it wasn’t something that i should have heard.
“bomin, if you don’t get your grades up, your coach is going to kick you off the team. i will find you a tutor.” she rolled her eyes putting her hand on his shoulder. my jaw dropped open when i realized what she had said.
“whatever.” he scoffed standing up putting both hands into his pockets and walked towards the door. once he stepped out of the door, he looked down to see me before taking a step towards me then when my back was facing the door, he took another step towards me backing me up against the wall. he leaned forward, his breath fanning my neck as he spoke,
“if you say anything about this, i will personally come for you. got it love?” as he finished his sentence, before he walked away, i heard a faint click sound. i didn’t know what it was but i looked into the distance when he walked off. i didn’t think much of it and did what i came to do.
that’s when everything went to shit.
Tumblr media
“y/n, you have to get out of here. right now.” the entire volleyball team came running into my room except for their captain. sungyoon was packing my stuff off the table, while joochan was helping me find my hoodie and a hat. he put it on my head quickly before he continued to pace around the room to find something else. donghyun was picking up my bag, while jaehyun was grabbing my phone. i stood there completely clueless before daeyeol grabbed my arm, pulling me out of my dorm.
“what the fuck is going on?” i looked up at daeyeol then turned around when i heard a huge thump. i saw that jangjun, joochan and youngtaek were all laying on top of each other groaning because they all tried to go through the door at the same time.
“we don’t have time to explain right now, but just know that if you don’t leave soon, getting an explanation will be the least of your worries.” daeyeol shook his head putting his hand on my lower back pushing me towards the door of the dorm building. that’s when i realized why they were trying to get me out of the building. bomin’s “to be fiance”, and bomin’s mother were getting out of the car when we walked out.
“hyung i told you we shouldn’t have gone this way.” jibeom looked down mumbling under his breath before pulling me away from their eyes. well at least he tried. joochan stepped in a few seconds later telling me that he had it all under control. i looked up at him questioning what he meant. we continued walking which caused joochan to hang back to talk to jaehyun.
“boys! just the people i was looking for. what a coincidence.” his fiance giggled but narrowed her eyes at me when she noticed i was hanging out with the team. i mean i didn’t usually so i would be weirded out too.
“who the fuck are you?” she scoffed walking up to me just as joochan smoothly jumped over seungmin who was tying his shoe laces. he slid his arm around my waist pulling me to face him completely. i looked up at him shocked at his actions then looked back at the girl.
“she’s my girlfriend, who the fuck are you?” he mocked back at her before turning to laugh with jangjun who was making jokes in my ear about her to make sure i wasn’t freaking out. i looked back at him giggling at him when he was telling me that he had my back.
“when’d you get a girl chan?” she laughed then rolled her eyes looking around to see if there was anyone walking out of the building behind us. she then looked at daeyeol crossing her arms, and scoffed. as joochan was about to reply to her she held up her hand to get him to stop talking.
“okay no. i understand that you think you’ve got it going for you but i don’t think you should be bossing people around like you own the place, especially my man.” i shrugged walking out of joochan’s arms and up into her face. her jaw dropped when she realized i had just talked back to her. she took a deep breath with her eyes narrowed at me then held up her hand to shoo me away.
“you’re irrelevant right now. daeyeol have you seen a bitch with bomin lately? apparently she’s been trying to slide in with my man.” she scoffed swiping on her phone to hold up the picture. i realized it was me. daeyeol gave me a side glance which gave me a message that i needed to get out of there. now.
“boys, let’s go. and we haven’t, but then again any ‘bitch’ hanging out with bomin is always better than the bitch in front of us.” jangjun scoffed then laughed when he was pushing joochan and i to start walking. we all started walking off, and when bomin’s mom and his fiance walked into the building, bomin showed up out of nowhere.
“i’ll take her from here. thank you boys.”  he smiled at me holding his hand out to me. i crossed my arms refusing to take his hand but of course, all he had to do was grab my arm pulling me towards the side of the building where it was out of the sight of his mother and to be fiance. he put me up against the wall with his hands on my shoulders. he looked over my shoulder once before turning back to look at me.
“thank you for playing along with the boys. if i went, it would have caused suspicion, so thank you.” he was genuinely thanking me. was bomin actually a nice kid? was he protecting me right now? he put his hand on my cheek caressing my cheek before looking me straight into the eyes.
“well i didn’t know what was going on and i figu-” i started my sentence only to see that his eyes moved down to look at my lips. i bit my lip only to meet his eyes again. he kept his eyes on mine, and we stared into each other’s eyes for at least ten minutes, well it felt like ten minutes. then he spoke.
“can i kiss you?”

Anonymous asked:
Would you make a scenario where fem reader is in a love triangle with her two best friends Bomin and Joochan?, Like they're super good friends but both of them like her... So they confess in different moments, she kisses both and she's confused. Both of them know about the others feelings but they still want to have the upper hand. You can pick the ending and write it however you want! It'll be great if we could feel the struggle... Maybe making her have her moments whenever she hangs with one of them, like she thinks she has decided but then they kiss and the same happens with the other and it's all messy?? Thank you beforehand i hope it's not too much to ask 🥺

Chapter 1
Hong Joochan
Everyone falls in love in different ways.
For some, it's slow and gradual. For others, it's love at first sight. And then for the rest, they're not in love until they just... are.
That's how it was for me.
You see, I had a friend. She was pretty, though I didn't realize it when we first met. Sometimes people would ask me, "Yo, are you friends with the hot chick?" and my response would always be, "Who?"
I didn't understand back then how beautiful she really was, because all I saw was 'my friend'. I'd closed myself off to the idea of seeing her as an actual woman without even realizing it.
Until one moment, I did. It was just one moment. One moment of her smiling in just the right lighting, the glare through the window putting a halo over her head.
All my memories with her flashed through my head like scenes from a movie. All the times she'd comforted me, made me laugh, or smiled for me.
In that moment, I felt like we were meeting again for the first time. Like an idiot, I stuttered when I said hi. I'd never stuttered around her before, and I knew she'd noticed it too, 'cause she didn't skip a beat in teasing me for it.
I thought maybe—just maybe—I had been underestimating how much I appreciated her presence in my life.
And how much I'd come to rely on it.
It was overwhelming, scary and exciting all at the same time. When the wave of emotions first washed over, I thought, "I've gotta tell someone."
In situations like this, Daeyeol would usually be the first person I'd spill my feelings to. He was always good at looking at things objectively and helping me evaluate myself.
But in this particular case with this particular girl, there was a better choice.
And it was Choi Bomin. He was kicked back in a chair, reading over a script from a web-drama he was gonna be starring in, his brows furrowed with concentration.
"Hey, Bomin?" I said. I was annoyed (yet also giddy) over the way my voice quivered with anxiousness. It'd been forever since I'd liked liked someone, and I was excited to get it off my chest.
In true Bomin fashion, he made eye contact for a short moment before looking back down at his script. "What's up?" he asked, a small smile resting on his lips to show that he was ready and willing to listen.
A nervous chuckled slipped out of my mouth. "I think I've got a crush on someone," I finally said, trying to keep my grin at bay.
His eyes immediately ripped away from the pages, a mixture of 'wow! I'm so happy for you!' and 'are we even allowed to do that?' written across his face. "You do?" he asked. "That's..." He thought for a moment before he couldn't hide his smile anymore.
He was trying to be all straight-up and objective, but I could tell he was getting swept up in the real-life love story, seemingly stolen straight from the pages of his script.
"Awesome," he settled on. "It's awesome. I'm happy for you!" He set the stack of papers off to the side, sitting up properly and giving me his full attention. "So, who's the lucky girl? Do I know her?"
Just thinking about it made me smile, while also simultaneously making me feel like I was gonna throw up. "Yeah, you know her pretty well," I chuckled. His eyes were burning with curiosity. "It's (Y/N)."
I'll never forget the look on his face when I said that. The absolute betrayal.
The joy I'd felt just moments ago vanished, my heart dropping to the pit of my stomach. That's when I realized it.
He liked her, too.
Tumblr media
For you to truly understand the significance of that moment, we're gonna have to go back by about 5 years.
Or is it 6?
I don't really remember. Honestly, I didn't even realize (Y/N) and I had become such good friends until I noticed, "Wow, I sure do spend a lot of time with you."
All the guys liked her and enjoyed her company, but none of 'em were as close to her as Bomin and I.
Now, just to clarify, I was friends with her first. It probably doesn't matter to most of you, but it matters to me. I'm proud of it.
I found a best friend that would stay by my side and support me until I die—and all before I turned 30! To me, that's an accomplishment.
We met at a pretty difficult time in my life. Well, in both of our lives actually. I'd been training for a long time, and my debut at that time was... How should I put it?
Uncertain.
I was scared. Like, really scared. And angry.
Maybe that's selfish to say when others had been training way longer than I had, but hey. I'm human. I can't help it.
People told me I was doing well and to hang in just a little longer, yet I had nothing to show for it. Lots of thoughts were running through my head at that point.
Is this what I'm supposed to do with my life? Just wait? It felt like a waste.
So, yeah. At that point, my mental health had taken a nosedive, and my physical health was following right after it. I was getting nosebleeds while practicing, I could barely hold down anything I ate, the mood swings were insane, and life was pretty much just kicking me in the ass.
I remember ditching practice one day 'cause I was just so tired of everything. I felt like if I didn't get outta there, I would either cry or punch someone.
I hopped on a bus from Mapo-gu to the Han River, but I don't remember anything about the commute.
In my eyes, the world was foggy and grey. I didn't see buildings and people passing by—just silhouettes; vaguely familiar shapes and blobs of faded color.
I couldn't even bring myself to try and decipher them.
Once I got to my stop, I wandered around the park for hours and hours until dusk had fallen and my feet were rubbed red with blisters.
As the sky started changing from purple to dark blue, I'd found myself a nice spot near the water where I could just sit in the grass, watching the boats pass by as the city-scape flickered to life.
The grass was dewy and I could tell my butt was gonna get wet, but I didn't care.
I'd been there for a whole two minutes before someone poked me harshly in my bony shoulder.
I'll give you a minute to guess who that was.
If you said '(Y/N)', ding ding ding! You win the grand prize.
That first time I met her, she wasn't smiling. In fact, she was glaring at me in a pretty threatening way, but whatever.
"You're in my spot," she'd said, voice dry, monotone and unamused.
I raised a brow. "Do you own the park?"
"No."
I turned away from her, folding my knees to my chest and resting my chin on them. "Then it's not yours," I said.
Usually, I wouldn't be so rude to a perfect stranger, but she started it. I was already in a bad mood—who was this chick to show up and make me feel worse?
My resolve to ignore her died down as soon as I heard her sniffling. It sent a pang of guilt running through my chest, but it also made my blood boil.
"Fine, take your damn seat," I groaned, scooting over a bit. "If you think I'm moving any farther though, you're dead wrong," I huffed grumpily, refusing to look at her. I didn't even look out at the water—just glared at a few innocent blades of grass.
A chilly breeze blew in that moment, making the grass shiver under my harsh gaze. The timing was almost comical.
I heard her plop down next to me, still sniffling a little. "Thanks..." she said hesitantly, dabbing her nose with her sleeve. "I'm sorry I made you move." She took a deep breath, chuckling at herself. "Honestly, I can be such an ass when I'm..." her voice trailed off.
Without really noticing it, I'd found myself listening to her. I turned my head a little. I still wasn't looking at her, per se, but now we were looking in the same direction.
"When you're what?" I asked, my voice considerably more gentle than before.
She sighed through her nose. Out of my peripherals, I saw her fold into the same position as me. "When I'm in state of not being okay, I guess," she said.
I laughed ironically. I could relate to that.
"How 'bout you?" she asked. "No offense, but you're not looking too hot. Somethin' going on?"
I finally looked at her, only to find she was already looking at me. "Even if there is something going on," I started, "what's the point in telling you? We're never gonna see each other again anyway."
"Now you see, that's the beauty of it," she said. "We're strangers who will never see each other again and have no emotional attachment to each other. Therefore, no matter how much baggage we unload onto each other, it won't drag us down."
She shrugged. "I guess what I'm sayin' is... We could be honest with each other and it's no harm, no foul."
I didn't say anything for about a minute, just letting the words ruminate in my head.
"That's only if you want to, though," she said, breaking the silence I didn't realize I'd let drag on for so long. "I just figured... If you're anything like me, you wouldn't have come here if you had someone to talk to."
And she was right. I didn't have anyone to talk to at that point.
So on that Thursday evening, I swallowed my pride and spilled my deepest inner thoughts to this random stranger—and she did the same to me.
We cried a lot, laughed like psychopaths, raged and yelled, ripped up fistfuls of grass—it was a rollercoaster.
But y'know what?
We both felt refreshed afterwards. And we thought, "Great! That's the end of it and now we can part ways and forget this ever happened."
But the universe had different plans for us.
I know South Korea isn't huge, but I thought it was at least big enough for acquaintances not to run into each other every other moment.
I started seeing her on the bus, at the cafe near the agency, that random hole-in-the-wall bakery that I thought no one else knew about.
It was almost creepy, and if I thought of myself a little more self-importantly, I might've thought she was stalking me.
Then it occurred to me.
Maybe she'd always been there, living her everyday life, and I just hadn't noticed her before. Maybe this was her everyday, and I was just passing through it every once in a while.
Despite having said we'd never speak to each other again, we exchanged the basic pleasantries whenever we bumped into each other. No pressure or expectations, just a random, "Oh! Mean Han River chick!" or "Oh! Depressed trainee boy."
Her sense of humor meshed with mine—in a weird, unexpected sort of way, and we quickly became the simplest way of relieving each other's stress.
We didn't try. And honestly, most of the time, it was just an accident. We'd always just happen to find each other when we needed to talk, like fate.
If you believe in that kinda stuff, I mean.
So there you have it! That's how a stranger became my best friend. And then, as time went on, my crush.
And, well... My other friend's crush.

Golden Child Mafia Reaction : To their fiancée running away
Daeyeol
Tumblr media
Daeyeol was coming home late, bloodied and bruised. The frequency of it was too much for you to bear. You were ready to leave any second. No matter how much you loved Daeyeol, you couldn’t bear the sight of him hurt. So one day you decided to pack your bags as he showered. Confusion was all over his face when he saw you with your bags
“I can’t do this anymore.”
And Daeyeol understood right then that there was nothing he could do to stop you. It might just even cause a bigger damage to your relationship. And decided to let you go.
He stayed silent, fearing what would come out of his mouth if he dared to open historical mouth. When he found his composure, he took one last look at you, just to see how drained you looked. His heart broke into pieces as you walked out of the door. But even after you left, he always kept an eye on you to make sure you were safe and it hadn’t gone unnoticed. So it was no surprise to you when you received his call one day.
“Another week and after that you’re coming home darling. I miss you.”
“I’m not coming back to you.”
“Oh, you will come back, willing or not.”
“Fuck you.”
“I’m up for it if you are.”
You slam the phone down in order to calm down the growing heat of your cheeks. What you didn’t know was that Daeyeol was just a few feet away from you, chuckling at your reaction. And vowed to himself to be a better man for you so you never even think about leaving him.
Sungyoon
Tumblr media
You didn’t even have enough time to plan your escape. You knew he would keep you captive if he need to. Whatever opportunity you got, you would have to use it to escape, and that’s all you needed. Sungyoon was out for business, when you decided to make your escape. You got your bag and shoved the nearest things you could find into it. But the timing was miscalculated. And you were caught while putting your escape plan into action. Sungyoon had walked into the room before you could even zip up your bag. Your body froze as he locked the door behind him.
“What are you doing, sweetheart?”
“I-I-“
Sungyoon walked leisurely towards you making you even more anxious about your impending doom. Sungyoon sat down on the bed and patted the space beside him.
“Come here.”
“No.”
As soon as the words left your mouth, you wished nothing more than to run and hide in a corner. Sungyoon raises an eyebrow at your tone. Suddenly he was cornering your body against the wall.
“I wasn’t asking sweetheart.”
“Now you’re going to unpack that bag and sit on my lap till I’m done working. Understood ?”
“Bite me.”
If there was one thing that Sungyoon liked the most about you, was your obedient yet fierce personality. It was the very reason why he got addicted to you in the first place. His devious smirk was enough to make your body heat up.
“If you insist.”
Jangjun
Tumblr media
No matter how much you were attracted to Jangjun, you knew he had a lot of enemies. So you decided to run away, even if it was the last thing you did. What you hadn’t expected was how difficult it would be without him around to keep you safe.
You had become paranoid to the extent that you wouldn’t leave your house for days sometimes. Not only because you feared what he would do if he found you but also because of the fear of his enemies finding you first. A few weeks later when you had finally managed to get a low key job, you decided to treat yourself to dinner thinking that you should celebrate your new beginning. Only if you had known what was to occur.
“Hey baby.”
You heard his voice before you saw him. Even though you had managed to stay low and eat in a shady restaurant, you were shocked to know that how calm he was being. You shakily looked up from your food and focused on the man sitting in front of you. Your face must have displayed your emotions before you could utter any word.
“Missed me?”
You managed to compose yourself and went back to eating. You knew you were doomed either way, so why worry. Atleast you could enjoy your last moments of freedom in peace. Jangjun chuckles lowly at your lack of response knowing well aware that you guys were in public.
“Don’t make me take you home and punish you.”
He had leaned forward so he the conversation could stay between you both only. His eyes bore into your as they challenged you to defy him.
“You’re not taking me home for that.”
“Who said it had to be at home.”
The innuendo behind his words didn’t go unnoticed by you. You simply backdown in order to maintain your dignity before things turned dirty.
“We’re in public!”
“And I really don’t care. I’m trying not to fuck you senseless on this table.”
He stood up after his bold declaration and held out his hand for you to take. Even though you knew what you were getting yourself back into, but you could care less about it, especially as long as Jangjun stayed by your side. You had come to realize that you couldn’t live your life without him.
Youngtaek
Tumblr media
You knew if you wanted to escape Youngtaek, you had to be stealthy. So you waited for the opportunity and gained his trust, enough to know about his whereabouts and schedules. And all that came into use when you successfully managed to escape the house. By the time Youngtaek understood everything, it was too late. Unfortunately for you his widespread connections were more powerful. And within a week you found yourself in front of him in his office.
In terms of fear, you were quite high up the level, because Youngtaek had been nothing but sweet to you so much so that you had to constantly remind yourself that he was one of the most dangerous Mafia leaders in the country. So you were worried about his negative reaction more than anything else.
“I trusted you.”
Youngtaek slammed his fists of the table and gave you the most deadliest glare he could manage. Not once had he raised his voice before, so it was no surprise when you flinched away. And as much as you wanted to stand your ground, you couldn’t do it because you felt guilty for betraying him.
“I surrendered myself completely to you, gave you everything, did everything you asked.”
“And this is what I get back in return, my fiancée running away from me.”
You heart broke at his words which were nothing short of the truth. He truly tried to be better for you. But you had been so blind to see the efforts he was putting in. Suddenly everything came crashing down and you felt his heartache briefly. He wouldn’t even meet your eyes so you feared the worst.
“Don’t give me that look.”
“Youngtaek, I’m-“
He stood still for a few seconds, thinking of what to say to you. But before you could apologize to him he walked by you and left the room without giving you a glance. Even though it hurt, you knew he didn’t want you to see him being angry. So in order to calm down and talk calmly he thought leaving the room was a better option. Which just made you feel even more guilty. And you decided to make it up to him and give this relationship another chance.
Seungmin
Tumblr media
Seungmin received a call in the middle of the meeting regarding the sudden disappearance of his fiancée. As soon as he hung up the phone, he let out a loud sigh at your antics and ordered his men to find you.
He stood up from his chair and went to the window thinking about all the possible places where you could be hiding. He went back to work as he planned to make you regret your decision to leave him.
Soon you found yourself in the place you hated the most. Even though you always managed to disappear right under his nose, deep down you knew it was a matter of time before he found you. So when you saw him sit down in front of you with his freshly dyed blonde hair. Instead of screaming at you, he just throws his head back and let’s out a sigh. You could easily tell that this cat and mouse chase took a toll on him. You became anxious as the time passed by and broke the deafening silence yourself.
“While I do enjoy the silent treatment, I wasn’t aware that it was, I , who had done something wrong.”
You snapped back at him angrily. So when you received no verbal response, your anxiety went out the roof as you purposely babbled to rile him up. Abruptly he sighed and focused his gaze on you.
“You better shut that pretty little mouth of yours before I put it to work, princess.”
He stared at you for a few seconds and stood up. The next thing you hear is the door slamming shut but you could be least bit bothered about his whereabouts when he left you all hot and dazed by his words. Even though Seungmin had rendered you speechless you find yourself thinking some unholy albeit unnecessary thoughts about him. You prayed to God to give you enough willpower to make through and not jump on his bones.

[01:24 a.m]
Insomnia had been Y/N's best friend for weeks. It all started when her boyfriend started promotions of their upcoming comeback. She was holding her phone, looking at Bomin’s photos she had when she received a message from him.
Are you sleeping, my lady?
No, I can't again. It's lonely here without you, holding me in your arms.
I know, baby, so I am here.
Thank you, oppa. I miss your gummy smile too.
Like I said. I'm here.
But I can't see your face, silly.
I'm waiting outside your apartment. I forgot my keys.
Y/N couldn't believe what she had read. She wrapped herself in a blanket and went to see if he was kidding or not. A quiet knock convinced her that he told her the truth. She opened the door, falling into his arms.
"I hope you appreciate me sneaking out of the dorm. I may have a problem in the morning, but you're worth it," Bomin said, lifting her chin so he could kiss her after a long time.

[11:19 pm] boyfriend!bomin
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“bomin...”
“hmm?” he asks innocently, his face buried in the crook of your neck.
“get off of me. you’re not as light as you look,” you say and he scoffs, lifting up.
“um, ouch? and don’t act like you don’t love using me as a blanket,” he says, returning to his original position.
“meh,” you say and he nips at your neck causing you to hit him on he arm. he laughs, placing a soft kiss there before snuggling further into you. “alright, but in a bit, we switch places.”
“mmm, ‘course. we can take turns.”
bomin wraps his arms around you tighter, sighing peacefully into your neck. you can’t help but smile at the boy currently using you as a bed. that is until you feel him get a bit heavier, his breathing evening out.
“baby,” you groan, patting him on the back and he sighs, sleepily raising to look at you.
“hmm?”
“you’re falling asleep,” you say, running your fingers through his hair and he lets out a soft sigh of relaxation at the feeling of your fingers massaging his scalp.
“mmm, i’m not,” he says, laying back down and you laugh.
“you are, though. bomin...”
he rolls off of you, pulling you with him to lay you on his chest.
“blankets,” he mumbles and you hum in confusion. “can you cover us, pretty please?”
“you’re such a big baby,” you giggle at his question, pulling the blankets up and around the two of you. he sighs once again, wrapping his arms tightly around you and slowly falling into a peaceful sleep. “goodnight, ‘min.”
“‘night, baby.”

"From the day we met, I knew I'd hurt you eventually." + "Hurting you was the hardest thing I've ever had to do." +"Do you think I liked hurting you?" Baekhyun 😇😇 OR Golden Child's Bomin if you want to switch it up 😇😇
"I'm no good for you." Bomin whispers, gently pushing your body away from his. You unwrap your arms from around his waist, staring at him confused.
The two of you were happy.. you were fine.
"What do mean?" You partially laugh.
"Look.." he sighs. "From the day we met, I knew I would hurt you eventually."
"What did you do?" You ask, taking a step back from him.
"Hurting you was the hardest thing I've done." He stresses. "It wasn't intentional.. it just happened and I hate myself for it."
"Bomin, what did you do?" You ask again, crossing your arms over your chest.
"I.. I cheated on you." He whispers.
"When?" You ask.
"Last weekend." He admits.
"But you.. you slept with me on Wednesday?" You scoff. "Wow. You're something else "
"It's not my fault! She came onto me! You weren't there! Do you think I liked hurting you?" He asks, angrily.
"Don't you dare pin your mistake on me! It is your fault! You're able to say no! Get out." You yell.
"Oh c'mon Y/N." He says, walking towards you.
"I said get out!" You yell.
Bomin walks towards the door, tears falling from hiz eyes. "Im sorry." He whispers before walking out of the door and your life, forever.
