Oh what a month for reading! Some really bad books, but also some candidates for favorites of the year! Had book club! That was fun as always! I also started TWO new fiber craft projects which I'm excited about. The Cabled crochet blanket is SO much fun and I'm really getting into the groove of it. I've learnt how to read crochet charts! Partially anyway. For this one project. It's clear I am still recovering covid because I can't do much else than sitting in bed reading lol But hey, I'm resting and having fun!
Tumblr media
Envy of Angels by Matt Wallace ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - What a delightfully hilarious nugget of a book! Absolutely wacky! Definitely interested in the rest of the series, but it's also more of a Read When In Brain Fog so I want to save it for my bad brain days lol
Shadow of the Crown by Amber Morane ⭐ - Unpolished. Poorly written. The ending sucked. No redeeming qualities and I do not want to read more from this series or author. At least it was free.
Starter Villain by John Scalzi ⭐⭐⭐ - Another fun and silly book! Scalzi definitely has a way of writing that defines a Scalzi Book™️. Don't think too much about it, just enjoy the ride. Loved the cats, I think more authors should put genius cats into their books.
Tumblr media
Firebreak by Nicole Kornher-Stace ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - CRYING. SOBBING. SCREAMING. Finally read this and I am in PAIN! Very good, very feelings, this is what Ready Player One could've been.
Flight & Anchor by Nicole Kornher-Stace ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - The Prequel to Firebreak, glad I read this second so that lines could hurt me more because I know how their stories end. I'm not sure what, but this one was missing something for me that made me enjoy it a little less than Firebreak, but I still enjoyed it a lot! A great duo!
His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Reread for book club! Still enjoyed it a lot! Still adore Temeraire and Laurence! The amount of times they call each other "my dear" so early melts my heart. I'd probably like this even more if I actually enjoyed historical fiction and the Napoleon wars.
Godkiller by Hannah Kaner ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - hey. Hi. Hello. What if Geralt was canonically a woman and the demon chicken from Nettle & Bone had a Voice. What. If. This book is a part of me now thanks bye!
Again, no clear goals for March. I"m honestly having a good time just reading with whatever I vibe with. I didn't get to the Ga'Hoole books in February, so I'll put those at the top of my potential list for March, but other than that? Who knows! I definitely immediately put myself on the libby waitlist for Sunbringer I need to know how Kissen, Elo, and Ina get on. I need to know they're all okay. Please let them be okay ;-;
If you have any recommendations for books like Godkiller I am ALL EARS! Might replay Witcher III about it in the meantime.

February 2024 Wrap Up
Why is it that February always seems to last forever? It's got to be one of my least favorite months, although it does mark the anniversary of me meeting my husband, so at least there's that. We've known each other five years!
Books Read: 6
This was a good reading month. Cecilia is my favorite of the month (and frankly should count for three books since it's so huge). The Margaret Oliphant biography is my least favorite, although I didn't hate it or anything. It was definitely less condescending and obnoxious than the one I read back in November that made me want to fight the authors (unfortunately I can't; they're dead). But it was still a little condescending and Williams referred to Oliphant as Margaret throughout, which irritated me. Ones marked with ® are rereads.
Margaret Oliphant: A Critical Biography by Merryn Williams - 3 stars
Salem Chapel by Margaret Oliphant - 4 stars ®
Heartstopper Vol. 5 by Alice Oseman - 5 stars
A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid - 5 stars
Cecilia by Frances Burney - 5 stars
The Villa by Rachel Hawkins - 4 stars
On Tumblr:
Look, I'm posting photos again! I'm trying to post pictures of my fairy tale retellings on Fridays as a small continuation of Fairy Tale Friday. My favorite thing about writing those posts for my blog was taking the photos, and I would still like to do that even though I've moved the feature onto YouTube.

Books of 2024 - January, February and March
Tumblr media
I may have been absentee but I have read a fair bit during the last few months. There's too many here to do reviews but I'm always happy to discuss my thoughts if anyone is interested.
January
The View from the Cheap Seats - Neil Gaiman
The Graveyard Book - Neil Gaiman
The Blade Itself - Joe Abercrombie
Epic of Gilgamesh - Anon
A Brightness Long Ago - Guy Gavriel Kay
February (or the month I went mad)
A Court of Thorns and Roses - Sarah J. Maas
A Court of Mist and Fury - Maas
A Court of Wings and Ruin - Maas
A Court of Frost and Starlight - Maas
The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories - Ken Liu
The Fellowship of the Ring - J.R.R. Tolkien
Before They are Hanged - Joe Abercrombie
March
Last Argument of Kings - Joe Abercrombie
The Sunlit Man - Brandon Sanderson
The Lions of Al-Rassan - Guy Gavriel Kay
Moving Pictures - Terry Pratchett
Not many classics are coming through, although I think April will make up for the deficiency at this rate... I may have read too much fantasy and it's making me a bit loopy.
The standout for the first quarter of the year was definitely The Lions of Al-Rassan. I knew I'd love this book but I needed to find the right time, well March was that time and I'm absolutely obsessed. I may even love it more than Tigana?! Time will have to tell but I'm so glad I've finally finished it and I'm looking forward to a reread in the future.

February Wrap Up
Tumblr media
Cleopatra and Frankenstein by Coco Mellors
Twenty-four-year-old British painter Cleo has escaped from England to New York and is still finding her place in the sleepless city when, a few months before her student visa ends, she meets Frank. Twenty years older and a self-made success, Frank's life is full of all the excesses Cleo's lacks.
3.5/5
Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata
Convenience Store Woman is the heartwarming and surprising story of thirty-six-year-old Tokyo resident Keiko Furukura. Keiko has never fit in, neither in her family, nor in school, but when at the age of eighteen she begins working at the Hiiromachi branch of “Smile Mart,” she finds peace and purpose in her life.
5/5
Little Birds by Anais Nin
Evocative and superbly erotic, Little Birds is a powerful journey into the mysterious world of sex and sensuality. From the beach towns of Normandy to the streets of New Orleans, these thirteen vignettes introduce us to a covetous French painter, a sleepless wanderer of the night, a guitar-playing gypsy, and a host of others who yearn for and dive into the turbulent depths of romantic experience.
3.75/5 (All stories)
The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston
A romance ghostwriter who's lost her motivation after a breakup is haunted by the spirit of her newly departed editor in this whimsical paranormal romance. Florence Day doesn't believe in love or happily-ever-afters any longer.
2/5 (DNF)
\/ My Full thoughts and reviews (SPOILERS) \/
Cleopatra and Frankenstein
I flip flop back and forth between whether or not I actually liked this book. A lot of people are saying that it's shallow, and I agree its very shallow, however, I quite like shallow characters. But it's hard to tell with this novel if the characters are shallow or if the narrative is.
I liked Cleo and Frank as main characters but both are hard to root for. Even towards the end when they get their 'happy ever after' I feel like neither really learnt anything. Which would be fine if the author wasn't trying so hard to make us believe they did.
The side characters - particularly Eleanor and Jesus (rip) - are the stars for me. Eleanor's chapters were funny and more poignant than the rest of the novel. It's also nice to see a POV that wasn't a tortured artist or the workaholic money bags. Zoe and Quentin are okay but they bring up topics and then drop them. Quentin, for example, is shown to struggle with body dysmorphia and it's suggested heavily that their trans. However, this is never brought up again and instead Quentin becomes about drug abuse. The characters often are 'topic characters' in that they are nothing but the topic the author wants to discuss.
Having said all this, am I going to keep reading Coco Mellors? Yes. I enjoyed this book regardless of the problems i have with it.
Convenience Store Woman
I read this in a day because I loved it so much.
This book will not be for everyone. The humour and characterisation are very odd - at least to a Western reader - and the concept is strange. However, I loved it.
I related so much to Keiko. I loved the atmosphere, the conflict was interesting, as Keiko doesn't really fight it intentionally but I just loved it. I am now reading everything that this author brings out, I'm currently reading her short story collection and so far it's a 5/5.
Little Birds
[Warning for i*cest, p*dophelia and SA]
Anais Nin is a conflicting figure. Little Birds has some really good stories in them. I particularly like, A Model and The Woman on the Dune. They're really good stories which look at women finding their sexuality and enjoying it, which often they are not depicted as such. It's wroth noting that this is erotica but written like a classic so the language is quite flowery.
However, there are some stories which are just outright gross. Little Birds is about a man and his fascination with young girls and ultimately flashes at them. Two Sisters starts with SA by the sisters father and then they do it with their brothers. It's weird, strange and very gross. At first, I would take this as ironic however Anais Nin odd and even herself had an affair with her own father, so it's begs with question whether or not she condones this or not.
Again, this is not for the faint of heart. I am going to read more of her work to try to understand her, as an author but so far she has an interesting way of writing but she is also very strange.
The Dead Romanctics
I DNF this at 29%, which is very early but instantly, I could feel this was going to put me in a reading slump.
The main character is annoying and the ghosts are secondary to everything, which is the only part I was actually excited for. The romance - for me - was not good. I think as a genre, I am just going to give up on booktok romance, it's just not my thing.
