from the annals of OFMD obsession

I've been inadvertently creating a literal potpourri out of scented leaves and blossoms that grow in the neighborhood to try to capture the scent of Stede Bonnet, and forthwith I shall continue to do so consciously and joyfully. I've seen a startling level of accord amongst fanfic writers that Stede definitely has a LAVENDER thing going on (inspired perhaps by Ed's ask about Stede's "yummy lavender soap", which some geniuses also thought meant that Ed had literally eaten or tasted the soap, which... dude c'mon, he knows what soap is about; he can use idiomatic descriptions just fine), but I also strongly believe that JASMINE has to play a part for Stede; it is so very romantic, and it was fashionable in the early 18th century, and also heck it grows around the corner from where I live. To this I have also incorporated some BAY LEAF, but I don't think it's enough - I think what I actually need is BAY RUM, the rummier the better. What else, though? Beeswax? Black tea, definitely. I think "no" on oranges, but perhaps ORANGE BLOSSOM WATER? I can get that at the H Mart, probably the same brand as the rosewater I got. I have no idea what I'm doing except maybe, kinda, I've read about perfumes a lot, I almost never wear any myself but I'm a huge fan of certain scents, yada bada bing bong autodidact.

This is ridiculous and hilarious, but I am also the kind of person who ordered a tester imp of David Bowie's signature scent for the last 20 or so years of his life - and I can't wear it myself, it really does not smell nice on me - but now and then I will spritz some on a card, and have a moment of imagining. Actually creating a scent, though, is a much more complicated thing, but I can at least try to create an admixture of these plants etc. that makes me think of Stede.

To no real purpose obviously :) It's fun!

I don't think that anything grows in my yard that could create a scent of Ed Teach, or Blackbeard, or god help me Izzy Hands, more's the pity. I wouldn't even know where to start.

I'm writing a paper on Goncharov right now and I can sooth your nerves that the difference between Gonch and whatever's happening on tiktok is not the fake media. Fake media and fake people and fake history will always and has always existed. Neither is the collective storytelling.

The difference is that we made Goncharov real by imitating a fandom for it. Like yes mass hallucinating a movie was fun and an incredible feat of collective creativity. But the *way* we created Goncharov is what will always make it special.

We, as a website, spontaneously created a perfect pastiche of fandom, one that was so identical to any other fandom behaviour it made the movie seem real.

As I quote thetwistyoucantresist in my paper, “maybe the real Goncharov was the Fandom we made along the way”.

Goncharov isnt the fake movie its the fake fandom, that's what special and unique and one of a kind

Important news for cosplay and fan creators!

So @/estarguarstia on twitter recently emailed the folks at the SAGAFTRA on how fan creators/influencers can support the strike (also what should aspiring members follow to not impact their future membership) and here’s what they said.

“We are asking folks not to do cosplay if it would promote struck productions. Yes, you can promote comics, books, and games, as this is not struck work. That being said, performers are being asked to refrain from promotiong struck work, including past productions that would have been struck if produced today.”

@/KlaudiaSays clarifies further what this means as they’re a producer/writer

“And even if a social media influencer isn’t getting paid to push on social media for a studio/streamer, it’s best not to do so, even as a fan. “Influencers should refrain from posting on social media about any struck work regardless of whether they are posting organically or in a paid capacity,” reads Sagaftrastrike.org.”

So please support the WGA and SAGAFTRA strikers by not doing promo for stopped works.

While yes the strike does specify not cosplaying for struck companies under their “influencer” page, it also does say non-members should not render services to struck companies either if they plan to be members in the future. And from the emails from SAG-AFTRA with suggestions I linked above as well, maybe just don’t do free promo for struck companies right now.

breaking my silence on chess the musical to say that i would literally not give a fuck about this show if i thought it was good or fully successful at what it is saying. SORRY! i love how messy she is. i love how since 1984 and continuing to this very day people with entirely different perceptions of and opinions on the musical have attempted in their own ways to "make it good" by creating all these different versions with like notably different plots, characterization, and song order, and i love how fucking bad the vast majority of these are despite it all. i hope people keep trying to fix chess the musical forever and until the end of time. i hope no one ever figures it out. i want every currently living theatre director in existence to make their own version and for all these versions to come out on broadway at the same time, making that year's musical season entirely comprised of various different versions of the cold war chess musical by tim rice and half of abba. i want not only our greatest minds but also our middlest-of-the-road and worst minds to come up with their own conclusions as to why chess does not entirely work in its original form or any subsequent forms like to really think about it and yes i do want someone to dedicate their entire life to perfecting chess by releasing version after version after version until they die peacefully but still, as always, in the grips of obsession. i want marriages to be broken up. i want mental states to be shattered. i dream of this world
