Whumptober Day 30
Hair Grabbing
Spoiler: This is an excerpt from The Wrong Timetravelers
“Did that make you stop hurting anyone?” duck-lady snaps back, “Why do you think you deserve any different?”
Crying is stupid and pointless and shameful, but he can’t help it. “You’re Jedi. Why are you doing this?”
“The Council doesn’t care what happens to you,” one of the others replies, “Not so long as you’re not a problem. And you’ll learn some of what you did to so many others.”
“Do you think I don’t already know?” he demands, “That I wouldn’t undo it all if I could? That I – I –”
“Nothing will change what you did,” the former-padawan replies sharply. “You’re a monster.”
“And monsters aren’t given mercy when they don’t grant it to others,” duck lady says, moving closer again. He looks away, heart hammering wildly as she approaches him, standing right in front of him.
“I can’t live with that,” he protests again, pleadingly. He knows they won’t listen, but he can’t – can’t –
“Watch,” she orders, gleefully, grabbing a handful of his hair and jerking his head upwards to watch as they burn the Sith symbol into his skin, right over his heart, and all he can think of is burning like he was on Mustafar and the droids cutting his chest open right afterwards. His vision is blurred with the tears running down his cheeks.
“Maybe you should have thought about it before joining Sidious,” one of the still-unnamed ones says.
He lands face-first on the floor when they finally let him go, panting, gasping. He doesn’t know how long it took for him to finally move from that position, the memories still burning in his mind.

Mace Windu said fuck the rules fuck the law fuck tradition the Chancellor is a Sith Lord and has made himself an emperor and I’m not going to sit by and let it happen.
Mace Windu said if I do nothing I’d be betraying the democracy I thought I was fighting for this whole time, which means more than the crimes I’ll be charged with when this is over.
And yet people try to praise Anakin or Dooku for “leaving a corrupt system”. As if that was why Anakin left. As if Dooku did anything but make it worse. People praise the Mandalorians for only following their own rules. As if we’ve ever seen the Mandalorians truly stand for anything.
As if we don’t already have the most metal anti-authoritarian, badass character for people to praise.
And yet these parts of the fandom hate him. I wonder why 🤔

My Feemor proposal
A popular headcanon for Feemor is that he's a Jedi Shadow. Shadows are spies and basically detectives. Feemor's lineage has a reputation for being eccentric, infamous, and finding trouble everywhere they go. So, walk with me here, Feemor's an eccentric, famous, blonde detective.
Tumblr media
This is Feemor.

when ppl see this & this, directed by the same person, and think the narrative is "anakin is evil" not "anakin is a steward of the balance, a force demi god, as was foretold on Mortis" 😂

"The idea of it..."
Tumblr media
This is obviously a reference to the ol' argument:
"The Jedi weren't bad but the Jedi Order as an institution needed to go."
So as a quick reminder I thought I'd point out:
1) George Lucas describes the Jedi's eradication as a sad thing, not something sad-but-necessary:
"[The] Jedi getting killed through the Order 66 of the clones is just done as one of those kind of inevitable pay offs in terms of getting rid of everybody, the Emperor is getting rid of all his enemies, but there’s a certain inevitability of it all and a sadness to it.  - Revenge of the Sith, Director’s Commentary, 2005
2) Out of 770 George Lucas quotes, I've never seen him refer to the Jedi Order as "an institution" once.
He does refer to the Republic itself as an institution.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"[In The Phantom Menace one of the many storylines is] the story of a young queen who's faced with the total annihilation of a people, and how she can get a sluggish political institution to pay attention to what's going on." - Premiere, 1999
He might be referring to the Senate instead of the Republic as a whole, but the point stands: he's not talking about the Jedi.
Which tracks with what Lucas defined as Dooku's reason for leaving the Order: his disenchantment with the Republic/Senate, not the Jedi themselves.
But let's go slightly further:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Jedi Temple was designed as a place of worship that would contrast with the corporate coldness of the Senate.
Tumblr media
Also, the Jedi were originally designed as a more organized police force. As the script evolved, they were turned into peacekeepers, diplomats.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mace's room was redesigned so as to not convey that the Jedi were mired in bureaucracy and protocol.
And when describing the political situation of the Prequels, Lucas doesn't blame the Jedi, but rather the corporations and Senate:
"But as often happens when wealth and power grow beyond all reasonable proportion, an evil fueled by greed arose. The massive organs of commerce mushroomed in power, the Senate became corrupt, and an ambitious named Palpatine was voted Supreme Chancellor." - Shatterpoint, Prologue, 2004
Wow, it's looking like not only is the "Jedi Order as an institution needed to go" narrative not a thing per Lucas, but
3) Lucas went out of his way to make it clear that the Jedi aren't the issue, here, the Republic/Senate is.
So how did we get this narrative?
Well, it comes from a generation of fans and Star Wars creators who were not the target audience.
You know the type. It's the kind who, when asked if they like the Prequel Trilogy, will respond that they liked...
Tumblr media
... but not the execution.
AKA they disliked the Prequels, but then EU books and The Clone Wars came out and provided them with enough material to form a headcanon justifying why they didn't like the Jedi, despite wanting to: it's because the Jedi are meant to be disliked! Totally!
The Jedi failed as an institution is an idea that comes from authors who wanted to engage with the material (it IS Star Wars, after all) but not the narrative that George Lucas had crafted, whose work then influenced older fans who preferred the author's retconned version of the story to the original one.
The rest is history.
As Prequels producer Rick McCallum put it:
"The myth begins on paper. During preproduction, filming, and postproduction, the myth becomes visible through the work of hundreds of dedicated people. Following the film's release, the myth becomes public and the public makes it its own." - Rick McCallum, Mythmaking: Behind the Scenes of Attack of the Clones, 2002

Now and then I have a little giggle when I recall that JJ Abrams made Rey Palpatine's grandkid via some sort of nonsensical cloning plot. It's not the worst thing in the ST but I do think it's emblematic of why it's bad. Signifier without substance. Derivative *and* gutless. Tried to rip off ESB without understanding how the Vader reveal works as a narrative beat, gave Sheev spawn, and didn't even have enough courage of their convictions to admit that he fucks.
Like we all know Vader spent two decades pining gloomily after Padmé. But Palpatine? Sheev Palpatine? The guy whose two modes are smiling smug self-satisfied secret smiles to himself and crowing POWER, UNLIMITED POWER? The guy who cackles with maniacal relish anytime he gets to let his hair down and have a lightsaber fight? That guy is a hedonist. Tell me I'm wrong. That man is at all times enjoying the hell out of being irredeemably evil. He is a literal emperor, the vastly powerful and mostly unchallenged ruler of the galaxy, reveling in a victory he spent many years plotting and scheming for. And they had to invent some half-assed narrative afterthought of a cloning program rather than simply allowing us to assume that at some point in the two+ decades between ROTS and ROTJ, that man got laid? The cowardice. The incompetence. The sheer commitment to taking every conceivable L

I can't escape the realization that it would be so easy for the good, protective, unconditional love of a parent to be twisted by fear into something else. I think of what I would do if my world fell apart the way Bode's did, what would I do to keep my little beans safe?

I was a bit stressed yesterday, who knew going over ideas for an "evil Kanan AU" would have such relaxing qualities 😭
Midnight ideas under the cut ~
Tumblr media
I feel like it could go both ways, the Empire killing Kanan or converting him - killing certainly saves time, but I feel like at this point there aren't that many Inquisitors left, with Cal hanging around, and there is the connection to his crew - would throw them off focus when they see the man they left for dead - imagine the angst potential
Why Malachor well, everyone was kinda there at one point heh. Plus, I think this could very well end up with Kanan still being blinded- but that's for another day.
Also Ezra doesn't have his scars, he never went after Kanan = the Grand Inquisitor never got the drop on him.
Aight, that's it for my nerd out.

Palpatine’s Thoughts on the Rebellion, the Empire and Power.
Here are some more of Palpatine’s inner thoughts during the Battle of Endor featured in the short story, “Then Fall, Sidious”.
I find the part in the last paragraph where he says “…strength is not a fist, but a burden. I will do what must be done to make this galaxy great because it is what I am called to do,” particularly interesting. It sounds almost like he feels called to “protect” the galaxy.
Anyway, like I’ve said before, I highly recommend this story to any Palpatine fan, who likes to see a more human side of him.

Being the victims of mass genocide is not failure.
And I think any character that says so should be a villain. So of course Ahsoka says it. I’m getting evil ahsoka headcanons again.
