I’m suffering. I read a lit fic book that’s 10 years old and has nearly no presence on Tumblr, but I’m obsessed with it and have no content to focus this obsession on. No one to rant about it with. No fan art. My brain is rotting without purpose like the spinach in your fridge you told yourself you were going to finish.
Sigh
Anyways, Everything I Never Told You was really good, read it if you want to I guess. I’m gonna be thinking about two of the characters forever and the last quarter of it altered my brain chemistry.

SPOILER: everything i never told you
finished everything i never told you and... wow.
tbh i really liked the book, in term of the story, character portrayal even with their flaws and everything.
but the highlight for me hand down was JACK.
"A drop of water trickled out of Nath’s hair, like a shy little mouse, and ran down the nape of his neck. It made its slow way between his shoulder blades, and where his back curved, it dropped straight down, as if it had jumped off a cliff, and splashed onto the back of Jack’s hand. Nath, facing away from Jack, didn’t see it, and neither did Lydia. Only Hannah, saw it fall. In her ears, it made a noise, like a cannon shot. And Jack himself jumped. He stared at the drop of water without moving, as if it were a rare insect that might fly away. Then, without looking at any of them, he raised his hand to his mouth and touched his tongue to it, as if it were honey.
It happened so quickly that if she were a different person, Hannah might have wondered if she’d imagined it. No one else saw. Nath was still turned away; Lydia had her eyes shut now against the sun. But the moment flashed lightning-bright to Hannah. Years of yearning had made her sensitive, the way a starving dog twitches its nostrils at the faintest scent of food. She could not mistake it. She recognized it at once: love, one-way deep adoration that bounced off and did not bounce back; careful, quiet love that didn’t care and went on anyway. It was too familiar to be surprising. Something deep inside her stretched out and curled around Jack like a shawl, but he didn’t notice."
these 2 paras changed my life.
like i know the book at the end indicates that they ended up together but i need a sequel on jack and nath. I NEED TO KNOW THEIR STORY. nath absolutely HATED jack throughout the book except for the last page. when he realized that jack wasn't involved in lydia's death.
like i have never read such a good portrayal of unrequited love. it changed me as a person. i want nothing but to know more.

Celeste Ng’s style of writing feels so effortless that if it weren’t for the grief and dread blanketing the pages, I would easily call this a One Day Read. Her tragically hopeful ending knocked the wind out of me. This is far sadder and deeper than Little Fires Everywhere, in my opinion.

Book Review: Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

A sad, quiet family portrait. Gorgeously written.
Celeste Ng is a master at encapsulating what makes people people - the mismatch between what is thought vs. what is spoken, the way our closest relationships can enrich our lives or deteriorate in ways we could never imagine, how the everyday can be rife with profound little moments, with misunderstandings that can taint everything we thought we knew about someone we loved - and I appreciate how her stories force readers to slow down and gaze at the mundane. To really pierce its layers. I love how she manages to unravel a tapestry of human emotion and psychology that is so rich, so complex, it can only be achieved with the utmost subtlety.
Ng's books, especially her characters, are onion-like as a result. Pieces fall away slowly, peel back in increments. Like layers of tissue paper, they crinkle, they bunch, sometimes they even tear, with the turn of every new page. The result of that is a journey that is less about what happens and more about how the characters processes emotionally - alone, together - in secret, in public - what does happen.
This book starts in such a simple way, with the simplest seed: Lydia Lee is dead. From there, it flourishes into a tale of loss and grief, of struggles with race and gender identity and belonging, and of expectations that can burden anyone to the point of suffocation.
I'm still marveling at how much this story made me feel, the way it left me with a pervasive sense of sadness for the entire Lee family, walking me through their tragedy with excruciating slowness and focus. It was that focus, I believe, that intricate hovering bullseye which made it impossible for any of the characters to escape their thoughts, their regrets, all of those conflicting human emotions one can't help but feel, which made this such a profound and moving read. Just beautiful.

never. ever. read that book when you’re in pms, really.
