JOhn still does not know what happened dring the hiatus and Sherlock still does not know Rosie.

Very sad at the beginning, the fic slowly but surely lets them finally heal.

A Guide to my Fiction

I've written a lot of short stories, which you can find here.

That's a lot to wade through, though, so I've organized many of them into series. If you're looking for a particular type of story, I hope this helps.

I rarely write sad endings, and I do leave warnings about things that you might want to avoid. If a story is tagged Author Chose Not To Warn, please read the tags, the notes, the warnings.

BBC:

Just Johnlock / 26 standalone stories: These are all stories that take place in BBC world. Some are alternate first meetings, canon fixits, and missing scenes. Many are fluffy, and some are angsty. Basic Johnlock stories.

Speculative Shorts / 22 standalone stories: These stories involve a degree of magic, fantasy, or science fiction. What-ifs and Twilight Zone moments. Again: fluff, angst, and Johnlock.

Those are my two main series, and most of my stories belong to one or the other. No story belongs to both of these series, so these are the two main places to find my short fiction. Neither series is complete, so you will see additions.

I do have some other series that overlap with Just Johnlock and Speculative Shorts. Some of these are one story arc told in multiple parts.

Many Happy Returns / 12 standalone stories: These are all variations of Sherlock's return from Reichenbach, each of them a fix-it with a happy ending. I will be adding to this series.

Random Strangers / One story told in 5 parts: John is a former POW who only knows Sherlock from the letter he was forced to write to a serviceman while in rehab. Their relationship begins in wariness, progresses through sympathy and understanding, eventually to love. Covers events of the series from a different first meeting through The Great Game, Reichenbach, and finally retirement. This series is complete.

May 4 / 2 parts: An amnesia story. Memento Mori: John has undetected brain damage (caused from the fall he took when the cyclist hit him) and can't remember what happened to Sherlock. In Absolution, Sherlock deals with John's amnesia and tries to atone for leaving him. This series is complete.

Author / 5 standalone stories: Writing and writers (usually John). I may add to this series.

Happiness: 2 parts, so far; two related stories that can be read independently. In Happy, John reflects on his long estrangement from Sherlock and reaches out to him; in Knight Errant, Sherlock explores his understanding of love, and explains why he waited so long for John. No more parts are planned for this, but you never know.

Seasons: 2 parts, so far; related stories that can be read independently. In Solstice, Sherlock determines that the way to win John back is the same way he lost him: so gradual that it's almost imperceptible. In Equinox, they're together and learning that, thanks to real life, the course of true love isn't always smooth. Each story takes place over one year. I have one more part planned for this series.

ACD:

Conductor of Light: 8 parts (with two more parts planned). Best described as a non-canonical, not-quite-an-AU retelling of ACD's detective and his doctor. The stories assume that Watson was an unreliable narrator attempting to make his telling of their cases acceptable for publication. As a narrator, Holmes is more reliable, but justifies many things to himself as he struggles to understand and express his feelings for Watson. Parts can be read independently, but are part of a long arc stretching from first meeting to Reichenbach and beyond.

Fin de Siecle: 20 parts, complete. Each part can be read on its own, but there is an overall arc to the stories that will make more sense if read in order. Only one part of this is somewhat explicit. The story assumes that Holmes and Watson are lovers in Victorian England who must hide their relationship. At Reichenbach, Holmes loses the battle with Moriarty and must go into hiding, faking his death for seven years; while Watson is put on trial for gross indecency and sent to prison. Reuniting after Holmes's secret return, they join the battle against Sebastian Moran, who has used his influence to corrupt the government.

Longer Fiction:

The Last Envoy: My longest work to date, 127k words. This is science fiction, but not hard SF. Sherlock is a very human alien who comes to Earth with a mission he doesn't completely understand and quickly falls in love-- with the planet, the people, and a certain army doctor. There is angst: war begins and he is caught up in events he cannot control, while still trying to fulfill his purpose in being here.

Do No Harm: 2 parts in this series, more planned. Novel-length. This is not strictly ACD; it's set in the interwar period (1920s-1930s). In Part 1, Do No Harm, Watson stands trial in 1923 for the murder of his mistress, the mystery novelist Mary Morstan. If convicted, he will hang. Sherlock Holmes sets out to prove his innocence. Part 2, Where I Cannot Follow, takes place ten years later, after Holmes has faked his death and returned from a three-year mission.

Off-Axis: These are not short stories, but a novel-length story and two novellas. Their connecting theme is parallel realities.

Synchronicity: John and Sherlock meet again, years after they were school boys together. John hasn't forgotten why he still hates Sherlock Holmes. Enemies to lovers.

The Short Tragic Death of John Watson: Thirteen years ago, Sherlock starred in a television series about an alien boy stranded on Earth. Now Molly has written a reunion episode and he's expected to join his old costars and recreate the role of Alex Tribble, now an adult returning to rescue his old friends from an alien threat. Having had some success since playing a teenage alien, Sherlock is reluctant to reprise the role. And there's another problem no one wants to discuss: John Watson, who played his best friend, is dead. NO MCD.

Blank Slate: Sherlock has been dead four years when John receives the shocking news that he's actually alive, that he's been held in captivity for the last two years. When he returns to John, he seems like a different person. Is the man John loves somewhere inside that amazing brain?

Starting Over: A disappointing blind date set up by well-meaning friends brings together John Watson, invalided army doctor, and Sherlock Holmes, asocial, "married to my work" consulting detective.

Accidental Magic: Soon after his return (TEH), Sherlock takes the case of a woman seeking stolen books hidden in her late husband’s library. He invites John to come with him. Working together after so much time apart, they begin to discover more than stolen books. This isn’t really a story about magic, except for the ordinary kind of magic that happens when people realise they’re in love and it’s time to do something about it. That kind of magic is the best kind.

I helped beta this first chapter, and @vaticancameos221 wrote something incredible. Sometimes, I forgot I was supposed to be editing because it was so damn good. Multiple times, I had to stop to just internally freak out. It’s a beautiful story filled with drama, heartbreak, and possibilities. Underrated Fics, Part 17

I’m a little late getting to this, as it’s been more than 6 months since the last installment, but that just means even more underrated fics for you to see what you may have missed out on. I’m including fics from multiple Sherlock Holmes adaptations and lowering my usual word count requirement because this is what I’ve been reading and excellence also comes in small(er) packages.

Qualifications:

- Fic complete - Last chapter posted prior to December 1, 2021 - Fewer than 150 kudos as of this posting - Earned a ‘favorite’ from me on AO3

In order of length:

1. This is a series 4 remix with a gripping, strongly written casefic full of shocks and surprises that made a lot more sense and remained truer to the core of the series than the aired episodes. The low kudos are probably because of the non-rating (I’d put it at T for violence) and the fact that it’s not really shippy, although I came away from it fully satisfied on all counts.

The East Wind Echoes by SherlockWatson_Holmes (36K, NR, Johnlock and Warstan) Fandom: Sherlock BBC There's a new serial killer in London, leaving tantalising clues that have a special meaning to Sherlock. Is he somehow linked to the crimes, and will he be able to protect the ones he loves?

2. A rare Pilot!verse fic with lovely domesticity and a compelling original mystery.

♢ ♧ ♤ ♡ by saki101 (11K, M, Johnlock) Fandom: Sherlock BBC An odd, little slice of life on Baker Street.

3. This is a perennially underrated author whose fics, I think, often get skipped due to vague or sparse summaries. Additionally, they changed their pen name recently, so are also suffering under the curse of unfamiliarity. But their stories are all terrific. This one in particular is full of dangerous dynamics and unhealthy choices for the ultimate in Johnlock pleasure.

The End of the Conversation by lurikko [formerly toyhto] (10K, E, Johnlock) Fandom: Sherlock BBC Sherlock tries to fix things with John but doesn't know how.

4. A reunion-after-estrangement fic that’s overflowing with suppressed emotion.

The Silence Between Us by Calais_Reno (9K, T, Johnlock) Fandom: ACD Watson is a proper Victorian man, a stranger to himself, unwittingly complicit in his own unhappiness. On a journey to London to see Holmes after ten years of silence, he tries to understand their broken friendship and his own grief.

5. A fresh and inventive farm AU with hot summer action, jealousy, bees, and a surprisingly tender core.

6. A captivating and unique telepathy AU with vast improvements over the canon story “A Case of Identity.”

best things dwell out of Sight by rachelindeed (9K, T, Johnlock) Fandom: Downey films In a society where telepathic ability is too often equated with worth, Miss Mary Sutherland is short-Sighted. But that didn't stop her from smelling a rat in Mr. Hosmer Angel's courtship, and her case gives Holmes and Watson the chance to prove that the marriage of true minds requires no magic at all.

7. I am wholly unfamiliar with the adaptation this is based on, but that did nothing to reduce my enjoyment of this unrepentantly smutty fic.

The Adventure of the Three Gay Bowls by sanguinity (7K, E, Johnlock, OC/OC) Fandom: The Sexual Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - Larry Townsend             Another manuscript from the secret journals of Dr John Watson: In an encounter later rewritten and published under the title of "The Three Gables," Holmes assists a member of the Tribadic Tribe who is being blackmailed by a former lover. In thanks, he and Watson are treated to a demonstration of feminine courage and devotion.

It's a rhythm he can live with - just enough adrenaline highs to balance out the drudgery of a normal bloke's life. Until a pandemic, and Victor Trevor, arrive in London.

Fandoms: BBC Sherlock. I enjoy a smattering of content for other fandoms, but my blog and my writing focuses on Sherlock, specifically johnlock and mystrade.

Where do you post: Ao3, sometimes ficlets on Tumblr and now, apparently, little thread ficlets on Twitter (I newly joined as @theogannecbatch and it’s quite the adventure.)

Most popular multi-chapter fic: For John With Love is my most popular multi-chapter fic. It took me four years to complete and is most representative of my style, perhaps? I personally enjoy seeing myself transition into a more expressive writer throughout the story. It’s a dark johnlock with serial killer Sherlock and johnstrade.

Favorite story you’ve written so far: Hm.. I love my shorter little abstracted angst pieces. So, in my top faves are Pulse, a depressed!Sherlock feat. estranged John and caring Mycroft, Promise, a late night chat turned morning love confession post S4, and To Sleep, Perchance to Dream, a little Sherlock angst bomb. I think those, particularly Pulse, are the ones I think about the most. 

Fic you were nervous to post: I think a fic I was nervous about posting... was probably both All we do is hide away back in January and A Sherlock-Shaped Hole this September. All we do was nerve-wracking because it’s a diary POV fic and I’d never done anything like that and I was posting a chapter a day for 38 days. It was quite the journey, but it turned out well, I think. SSH made me nervous because it had been a while since I’d posted a fic of substance. “substance”. So, that made me nervous, to “put to the test” if I was still decent at writing fics. But that also turned out alright, so, that was nice. 

How you choose your titles: My titles are either songs that the fic was based on or a reflection of the story. So, my fluff series it’s pretty much based on a phrase or feeling uttered in the series, otherwise it’s just... whatever I think it should be called. Do I regret some of my titles? Yes. Do I regret naming For John, with love that? Hecking yes. But, it is what it is and now I try to name more wisely. Do I also regret A Sherlock-Shaped Hole? Yes. Is it an accurate title? Also yes. So, it’s tricky. - I also love titles. I love having a title for a piece. It feels grounding and reminds me of the focus of the piece. Sometimes, I have to think really hard about it, but other times, they just come to me.

 Do you outline: Yes and no. The only pieces I posted that I actually outlined were Bee Socks, For John with love, and A Sherlock-Shaped Hole. Everything else I spit out pretty much as it is. I am a large fan of outlining though. I have pages and pages of WIPs that are outlined, just percolating and waiting for the right moment to emerge as a fic in my brain. 

Complete: I’m not sure what this means, but I have around 35 completed fics on A03. Two WIPs posted on there and a cover art. I’m pleased with that so far. Not putting any pressure on myself. 

In Progress: I have a hell of a lot of WIPs. I’m currently working on.... my first Mystrade fic that’s very WIP that I’m calling Gorgeous, Beautiful, a little ficlet for a headcanon for another writer who allowed me to write it (untitled), the sequel to All we do is hide away (An End to the Bitter Frosts), a Halloween spooky fic for next year, This Much I Know, and a royal/fantasy?/dark fic called The Son of the King. But honestly, there are probably around 30 WIP projects that I bounce back and forth on. I’m not a steady writer. The one that probably haunts me the most is Bee Socks, but it just spiraled into too big a project (i.e. the pandemic) and so I had to drop it temporarily for mental health reasons. I may pick it back up, or I may just write a chapter summarising what my plans had been. We’ll see. 

Coming Soon: Hopefully, Gorgeous, Beautiful will work itself out. And then the headcanon ficlet, of course. Other then that, I have no idea. 

Do you accept prompts: I’ve never gotten any prompts, really. I’m not sure. It would have to be within the areas I write in: realism, dark/fluff, no smut, etc. I love writing angst, so if you have a prompt, hit me up and we can chat about it!

Upcoming story you are most excited to write: I’m really excited to write the spooky fic, This Much I Know. I tried to write it in time for Halloween this year but it got away from me and really blossomed into something else. So I’m excited to see what will happen there.

In general, Zuko is Sherlock and Sokka is John and I'll direct you to my post here about their similarities in personality and relationship dynamic. This is mostly what im talking about when I get johnlock vibes from modern au fics. One thing I didnt mention in that post tho that I'm thinking about now is how Zuko throws himself into danger for the sake of other people i.e. The Boiling Rock episodes and also:

The same way Sherlock has a disregard for his own safety and will do anything to solve the case (some may say their motivations are different, sherlock just wants to solve the puzzle and zuko actually cares, but by s3 and s4 of BBC Sherlock we know that sherlock actually cares about the people his cases affect. Literslly faking his death so John will live, and staying up all night with "Faith" when he thinks she's suicidal even though he's coming down from a high).

Another thing! In a lot of fics, Sokka is the one taking care of Zuko and reminding him to eat and sleep and take time to take care of himself, it doesn't matter if he's the firelord! And uh 👀 John does the same thing for sherlock, taking care of him and making sure he eats and sleeps 🥺

BUT

If it were to come down to whos the detective and who's the doctor, Sokka is 100% the detective

I mean

Sokka makes the plans and Zuko follows along, see The Boiling Rock episodes. Sherlock makes the plans and John follows along. Both John and Zuko contribute to the plan in smaller ways but its largely Sherlock/Sokka.

The heart/head dynamic? Sherlock and Sokka are the head, Zuko and John are the heart. (Some may argue that sherlock is the heart and john is the head on a deeper level of characterization and while i agree, the intended takeaway is that sherlock=head and john=heart).

So basically Sokka is Sherlock with John's personality, and

!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JOHN/ZUKO ABUSIVE CHILDHOODS AND ESTRANGED SISTER WHO THEY TRY TO RECONCILE WITH BUT HAVENT HAD ANY SUCCESS

This came to me in a sudden bout of clarity. Even though there's no canon evidence for John's abusive father and absent mother, it is fanon and therefore influences how most fanfic authors write his character.

ANYWAY

sokka is john with sherlocks smarts, and zuko is sherlock with johns heart

   Sherrinford is not really the name of some high security prison. That was just a figment of John’s frantic coma dream. And Eurus is not actually Sherlock’s sister. That’s just something random she said to John before shooting him. Sherlock and John were never actually estranged. That was just their act to cover up what really happened to Mary – or Rosamund Moran, as her real name has turned out to be. Sherlock does have a secret sibling, though, and his name is Sherrinford.

   After finally eliminating Moran – though in a rather dramatically different way than they had envisioned – and exposing the truth about Eurus, John encourages Sherlock to delve into his past and to find out whether the reasons to keep Sherrinford away from Sherlock were the right ones, and to discover what really happened in 1981. Along the way, Sherlock and John gradually, finally, stop keeping each other at a distance, and eventually become a proper family of their own.

(John never actually forgave Mary, but only pretended in order to get custody over his child, John and Sherlock acting estranged was just an act for covering up the fact that John really shot Mary, the hug scene was the version that John told his therapist, the cases Sherlock solves in Eurus’s murder maze are cases he’s actually solving while sitting at John’s hospital bed and waiting for him to wake up and which John incorporates into his coma dream, etc.)

Notes On A Love Story by A_Candle_For_Sherlock (@a-candle-for-sherlock ), (G, 4k w, ACD Holmes) "Watson finds a copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray in Holmes' room. Or: what happens when a queer novel upends Baker Street." - this is a canon acd Holmes fic, it's an absolutely lovely story, written in beautiful Victorian style, obviously related to Oscar Wilde and his story-- no spoilers tho! but even if you're not a big fan of Victorian fics or whatever, give this a try, it's a beautiful story and A-Candle-For-Sherlock writes Victorian Holmes like noone else does, really, give this a try

A Case for Domestic Propinquity by SilentAuror (@silentauroriamthereal ), (E, 32k w, post s4 fix it) "As Sherlock and John renovate Baker Street with Rosie underfoot, Sherlock can't help but wondering how he could possibly convince John to just stay indefinitely..." - a friends to lovers fic very domestic

Two Years As Your Interpreter by prettyvk (@prettyvk ), (E, 42k w, teenlock, AU) "John isn’t scared of Sherlock or of the adults around them. But he is scared of this Message. He is scared he’ll be there, in two years, right next to Sherlock, watching and unable to do a damn thing when he dies. Because the true Message was, “Don’t expect to make a career out of this interpreter thing. I’ll die in two years.” - a really f-ing beautiful story with teenlock and some supernatural/fantastic elements to it that even if you aren't a fan of AUs is so worth the read

More Things Than Are Dreamt Of (s) by 1electricpirate, (M-E, 38k w, HP AU) "In which John is (reluctantly) a wizard, Mycroft is (apparently) omniscient, and Sherlock is (surprisingly) oblivious." - the best fucking harry potter au I've ever read in my life, it's honestly so good and it's really funny and just a great story overall, even if you've never seen hp, even if you don't like hp, give this series a chance.

Here’s a little unedited something from The Ghost in the Graphite:

Mycroft is pointedly not looking at the drawings, which tells me he’s seen them. Looked at all of them. Why was he even over here at my desk at all?

“Mycroft,” I say.

Mycroft pauses. He rolls the soaked rag into a ball. Picks up the wineglass and stands. Doesn’t look at me. “You have quite an interesting hobby. I knew, despite rarely seeing you hold a pen or paper, you must have spent quite a lot of time with pen and paper.”

“How’d you know that?” I ask.

“Your right ring finger. The callus over the top knuckle, just venturing on the inner side of your finger. Suggests many years of a writing implement having rested there, having moved there.” His gaze sweeps toward the drawings. “This, I did not predict, though.”

My cheeks burn. “Did you - did you knock them over on purpose? Trying to...figure out my source for the mask and the symbol?”

Mycroft’s eyes snap to mine. He says nothing. I have caught him red-handed, and thank the gods he will not prevaricate or try to weasel his way out of it. It’s almost refreshing. 

He points a finger at the young girl looking over his shoulder in the one and only sketch of him. “Who is she supposed to be?”

I level a gaze at him. I’m feeling reckless. One thing about having this “gift,” is that it gets lonely. It’s hard. My da and my grandnan knew, of course. My wife. She thought it was “cool” at first, but then it alternately scared her and exhausted her. “Why don’t you tell me?”

His eyes widen. “What do you mean by that?”

“She’s yours,” I say. “Your...familiar, or follower, or...haunt.”

“Haunt?” Mycroft says, his voice incredulous, and his eyes whitening.

“I dreamt of her,” I say. “She follows you, and I think...I think she might have followed Sherlock once.” I got that sense while drawing her with Mycroft. “She’s young. Just a little child. But she’s...frightening, I think. Has power. And she’s not asking for my help, but she is lingering nonetheless. She’s all burnt up -”

“Stop.” Mycroft’s voice is harsh. Hard. He looks panicked. I’ve never seen Mycroft Holmes panicked. I’ve seen him concerned, I’ve seen him upset, and I’ve seen him angry and exasperated. Now, he’s…afraid? “Who told you?”

“Told me what?” I feel the hairs all across my neck and back stand on end. I feel that nervy edge of a fight coming on. 

“Who gave you that information?” His voice is thunderous, and his face has changed to one of hatred. I almost flinch beneath his gaze, but I hold it. I’m no wilting flower. I’m a man with little left to lose.

“You did. Or she did. I’m not sure how it all works.” I almost delight in confusing him, as I watch his brow make tiny micro-movements as his mind whirls to decipher whatever ‘game’ he thinks I’m playing. 

“This isn’t a game,” he says. I don’t know how he manages to read my thoughts so often.

“I’m not playing,” I say. “I’m telling you.” Because it’s hard. It’s lonely. It’s helped to ruin my closest friendships and my marriage. It estranged me from my father. And soon enough, it’ll push Mycroft Holmes out of my life, too. “I dream things. Sometimes, I draw things. It’s like something enters me, and I can’t help it. I can’t stop myself.” I swallow, because this is the truly frightening part. “When I draw, it’s like I’m not even there.” I’m not even there.

Mycroft’s face contorts into a look of disgust. “You maintain that you harbour some sort of skill in extrasensory perception, and you expect me to believe it?”

“How else would I know about her?” I say as I point to the drawing. Mycroft flinches on the word ‘her.’ 

“Then, do you know her name?” he asks.

I shake my head no. “She didn’t speak. She only follows you around.”

His face pales. Then hardens again as he places the wineglass on the desk with a clink and drops the rag beside it. “Greg Lestrade, so help me, I -”

“I don’t know, okay!” I yell. “It’s been with me all my life, and it’s the most horrible thing; I wouldn’t wish it on anyone!” 

Mycroft stares at me. “And Sherlock? He visited you in your dreams, too?”

I deflate. It kills me to answer. “No. I wanted him to. I...I would go to Bart’s, where he fell. I’d stand by the spot, the exact spot, and get nothing. I even went up to the roof and stood at the edge. I’ve been to his grave. I’ve told him to come. I’ve asked him to come. In hopes he’d hear me somehow.” I gesture to the drawings of his face, that pointed gaze sent heavenward. “He’s never come. So, maybe he’s moved on to wherever people go? I don’t know. I had hoped - well, I hoped. But the ones I want to visit me never do.” For a second, I remember my mother’s picture. I keep exactly one wallet-sized photo in a box in the bedroom closet. Billie Lestrade née Sullivan. Big smile and a riot of curly hair. 

Grandnan, too. I thought she’d come. She never did.

“I sat around and drew Sherlock. Sometimes, I can get the dead to visit when I draw them. He never came.” Somehow I feel like I should apologise to Mycroft for this one. I lift my shoulders and step forward to pick the drawings up. Mycroft steps back. 

It’s fine. It’s what I expected. Get it over with now. After Cass, I gave myself a talking-to. That it was better for someone like me to be alone. 

My attraction to Mycroft isn’t really appropriate anyway.
