May Prompts 2024
Dear Writers:
It's nearly May! The month of merry little thoughts, divine mistakes, and frivolous whims.
Time to set aside that fantasy trilogy that's been stuck in the mud all winter, the six-act tragedy in blank verse you've been labouring over--and write some random bits and bobs!
Visit your mind attic. Pull open the drawer where you hide your terrible ideas and scenes that are waiting for the right story. (I know you have such an attic and such a drawer because I do as well 🙄) Dig around— not with the idea of spring cleaning, which will only produce an empty drawer and a tidy attic— but because it's a treasure hunt.
Dust off the lawn furniture, put on your sandals, take your laptop outdoors. New environs, new inspirations.
The point is this: Last year* some of us wrote and shared a month of little daily fictions. There were drabbles and 221Bs and flash-fiction and mini-epics. There were prompts, which some of us used as a starting place, and sharing of minifics amongst ourselves, which led to more inspiration.
Wanna see some more?
I've been hoarding ideas since last year and am now opening that drawer. I plan to write a short something every day in May, and will share my words with whoever wants to be tagged. If you'd like a daily prompt, I will be supplying that.
No pressure. While some structure creates opportunity and creativity thrives within structure, this exercise is not meant to create anxiety or trigger your inner completionist. (My internal taskmaster is taking the month off.)
No judgement. No prizes for reaching 31, no awards for creativity, no certificates of participation. Just cheering one another on.
No rules. Use the prompt or don't. Write 100 words or 1000. Any fandom, any characters, any headcanon. Or your own original creation. Write every day or whenever an idea strikes. Share or don't.
No guilt. Fail gleefully, write terribly, get out of the boat and swim.
Correction. One rule: write some words.

Fanfics I Really Liked in January 2024
So. Since I keep a list of what I´ve read anyway (there´s always a list), I will rec all the fics I´ve wholly enjoyed on a monthly basis. Old and new, canon or AU, big or small authors, long or short but nearly always Johnlock (-ish).

After Mrs Hudson's death, Sherlock is lonelier and more depressed than ever. Before she passed, she made Sherlock promise to reach out to an estranged John whom Sherlock has not seen or spoken to in two years. JOhn still does not know what happened dring the hiatus and Sherlock still does not know Rosie.
Very sad at the beginning, the fic slowly but surely lets them finally heal.

After Sherlock returns from the dead, John finds himself inexplicably angry all the time. So he joins a Mixed Martial Arts gym. As John joins in on underground no-holds-barred brawls, situations arise that just might force John to face what is really going on underneath all the rage.

It’s Christmas Eve, and Sherlock is working because he doesn’t need Christmas or even company. Until a series of strange encounters on his way back to Baker Street makes him reconsider.
Lovely fic that lets SHerlock contemplate life and what is really important to him.

John wakes up in a locked room, unable to remember how he got here. The last thing he remembers is his hands covered in blood, trying to keep a soldier from dying. His roommate also seems to be suffering from amnesia, and has decided that John is a delusion.
Suspenseful premise and a cool twist!

There are so many occasions when John could have said something but didn't. And didn't and didn't until the reader really wants to kick John (or throttle the author) and then - finally - he does. Then the reader wants to high-five John (and kiss the author).

Hi Diane! 👋 Longtime fan here. I know you're a fanfic fan (of series you're not involved in creating) and I was wondering if you would be willing to share any fics you particularly enjoyed reading. I know you've kept your ao3 pseudonym under wraps, but I'd love to read some fics that you enjoyed, if you're comfortable with that!!

Rec: Christmas in April? Yes, please! Completely charming with a smidge of angst, this reminds me of classic pre-S2 “meet the Holmes family” fics with a supporting cast of eccentric broadstroke characters, an old family pile, and only one bed.
In this AU setup, Sherlock is just out of uni and running a fledgling consulting detective business, while John - his former dormmate and now flatmate - is a medical student. The Holmes parents are upper-class snobs with a long list of reasons to disapprove of Sherlock, although there may be an ally or two (or 3) amongst the extended family.
Playful quips, jabs, and snark trade off with more serious confrontations of classism and homophobia, all the while Sherlock and John come to the slow-but-sudden realization that what they are playacting may not be a game after all. You won’t regret returning to the chill and gloom of winter with these two fakers to cheer on.
