The Illusion of Benevolence: How Effective Altruism Masks Authoritarianism
Effective altruism isn't authoritarianism - it's about using evidence and reason to do the most good. It encourages individuals to make informed, impactful choices and doesn't rely on top-down control. It's about empowering people to make positive changes. #effectivealtruism Effective altruism, often hailed as a benevolent movement, may unwittingly harbor authoritarian tendencies that merit investigation. At first glance, its emphasis on making a positive impact and doing the most good seems admirable. However, a closer examination unveils a disconcerting pattern of dogmatic adherence to a prescribed set of priorities and approaches. The propagation of one-size-fits-all solutions and the dismissal of individual autonomy in favor of a singular, utilitarian agenda parallel the traits of authoritarianism. The zeal to enforce rigid guidelines and ostracize dissenting views under the guise of 'effectiveness' exhibits an alarming resemblance to authoritarian governance. Advocates must reevaluate the potentially oppressive nature of an unquestioning allegiance to effective altruism and strive for a more inclusive, diverse approach to creating positive change.

It’s okay to have hobbies! Duh.
Bill Gates: reading.
Elon Musk: reading.
Warren Buffet: ukelele. Musical instruments improve motor skills + creativity!
Jack Ma: music (favorite genre is Mandopop), dance (including impersonating Michael Jackson), oil painting, kung-fu.
Meryl Streep: knitting. Says it helps her de-stress + get her thoughts together. Julia Roberts + Ryan Gosling also like knitting as a hobby.
Marissa Mayer: baking. “My hobbies actually make me better at work”, she says.
In the age we live in, finding a balance between work and leisure can be tough. But there’s more to life than just work, eat and sleep.
If you are someone who always wanted to pick up a childhood hobby or a long-lost passion, now is the time to start. (1)
Hobbies are important to prevent burnout + maintain engaged in more altruistic work.
Even if you are purely trying to maximize your EA output, consider... let's say you're making $30k/yr. $300/yr on hobbies is just 1% of that output. So if that makes you even 1% more effective, by giving you an effective way to relax and rejuvenate, and bringing joy into your life which increases your creativity and decrease the risk of burnout and depression, then you're breaking even. If it's making you more than 1% more effective then you are coming out ahead.
My rule of thumb is that the very most impactful people are likely 10x and perhaps even 100x as impactful as "average" people. I focus on maximizing the probability that I'm eventually able to attain that 10x level of impact, by trying to make good career choices, acquire rare and valuable skills, work on the very most impactful projects, generate and share unusual ideas (hopefully not information hazards) which could be very impactful, and so on. If something is only going to decrease my personal altruistic output by about 1%, like a hobby that I spend $300/yr on, I don't spend very much time worrying about it... especially if cutting that hobby out is going to decrease my general life satisfaction and decrease the number of spoons I can devote to having the best impact I'm able to have.
(Again, this analysis is predicated on you making every decision 100% with regard to maximizing your impact. I additionally think that you shouldn't necessarily be doing this. I'm just pointing out that even if you ARE only concerned with maximizing your personal impact, the path to that is probably not through cutting things out until you become joyless and miserable.)

Will the climate run AMOC?
I have been taking a (free) @effectivealtruism course and reading The Precipice by a leading EA longtermist thinker. It tends to minimize the possibility that climate change might be an existential risk. I also just listened to an interesting episode of the Clearer Thinking podcast on this issue, where Misha Glouberman was suggesting the projections he was able to find tended to class the consequences of high end climate change as bad but essentially manageable. So in light of the recent release of the latest IPCC "Synthesis Report" summary, I thought I would take a look and see for myself if anything new and alarming there about the more extreme climate risks. Unfortunately, I did...
Something I always thought of as a "long tail" climate risk (in 2014 it was deemed "very unlikely" by the IPCC) has turned into a roughly 50% risk by 2100 in the latest report. I guess this may be old news to dedicated climate change followers but it was news to me...
Specifically, the IPCC now estimates the odds are roughly 50/50 that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) - which includes the Gulf Stream - will collapse before 2100 (pp 19-20). If that happened, an MIT Technology Review AMOC summary suggests,
it could freeze the far north of Europe, driving down average winter temperatures by more than 10 °C. It might cut crop production and incomes across the continent as much of the land becomes cooler and drier. Sea levels could rise as much as a foot on the Eastern Seaboard, flooding homes and businesses up and down the coast. And the summer monsoons over major parts of Africa and Asia might weaken, raising the odds of droughts and famines that could leave untold numbers without adequate food or water.
Back in 2014, the IPCC also said (p. 1079)
Large CH4 release to the atmosphere [due to accelerated emissions of CH4 from wetlands, permafrost, and ocean hydrates during this century is unlikely [0=33%] (WGI AR5 Section 6.4.7.3). Owing to such uncertainties, the existence of a tipping point cannot be ascertained.
Am waiting nervously to find out whether they are officially still not that worried about that potential disaster.

What then is "Heart Work"?
What then is “Heart Work”?
The cake box is empty, the Banana bread has been eaten. More Banana Bread needed Who are you As a teacher I have to remember the names of students. A large number of names. But because I teach in university, and because the students take my classes, they opt in and then the next semester I will have different students. If you don't know Peter Singer's work yet, do get a book or watch a lecture soon. He speaks about altruism, and ethics in understandable terms! We are not here to crush the world around us, but to give and create. ✌️🍀🌈🌸🌱 #vegan #altruism #effectivealtruism #govegan #animalrights #ethics #live #compassion #give #love #mindfulness

Do you want to make a difference in the world? Are you currently learning how to be altruistic on a larger scale? Do you want to do the most good with your efforts that may be through donation, work, volunteering, consumption? Do you care about poverty, climate change, environmentalism, animal welfare, prison reform? Please check out this book 'Doing Good Better' from your local library. I can't even begin to list how valuable of resource it is. You are making a difference whether you do something or not, so why not learn how to make the best difference. #doinggoodbetter #effectivealtruism #difference #williammacaskill #altruism #book #read #change #library

Don't forget to not destroy yourself over it. It'll take time. And messing yourself up isn't honorable or effective: even if you only cared about that big bad problem and not about your own well-being at all, you'd have to agree that since humans have physical and emotional needs (that, if disregarded too long, will shut them down), it'll be very ineffective for you to let yourself fall into depression or apathy. Dissolving into a cloud of ego does the same. Please don't get sick, it would defeat the point. #ethics #ethical #dogood #aliteraldogooderdoesgood #whichisgood #effectivealtruism #ecofriendly #sustainable #environment #climate #sustainability #blog #conscious #limitstogrowth #ecology #climate #klimawandel #postwachstum #grenzendeswachstums #öko #climatechange #climateaction #sustainability #energie #umwelt #energiewende #nachhaltigkeit #activism #mindfulness #breathe #subsistence #depression

A friend of mine introduced me to the concept of effective altruism earlier this year, and some time late, I signed this document. Excerpt from the introductory statement I received: "Our vision is a world in which giving 10% of our income to the most effective organisations is the norm. Please spread the word to any friends, family or colleagues who you think might be interested. The more people involved, the sooner we can bring about change." I chose to top this by 40%, since I know from experience that, the more you learn to give and let go, the more you will find out that you have, and not just in material possesions, but in what is more important: health and happiness! I am also minimizing my personal expenses and environmental impact by aiming to make my household completely self sustainable. If you are interested in seeing the progress made during that process, follow me on instagram @beyond_self_sustainable #effectivealtruism #givingwhatwecan
