Summary: You have an unpleasant encounter with an older man.

My warnings are not exhaustive but be aware this is a dark fic and may include potentially triggering topics. Please use your common sense when consuming content. I am not responsible for your decisions.

Your phone buzzes as your niece bounces dangerously close to the tree. Your sister's in town with her two kids, but neither her or her husband seem to care much about watching them. Somehow, you're tasked with that and unsure what to do about their endless energy. You envy them truly so you just kind of let them go.

You hear your mother and sister chattering in the kitchen, her husband is in the garage with your stepdad, and as always, you're the odd one out. You slide your phone out and check the ID. It's Bucky, technically your new boss. You notice you've missed a few texts from him. Great. Not a good start. You were supposed to tell everyone at dinner about your new gig.

You answer, watching the kids without much thought, play tug of war over a string of tinsel. You should stop them but it'll just snap anyhow. You clear your throat and put your hand to your cheek, feeling the nervousness warm your skin.

"Hello, Mr. B-Barnes," you eke out.

"Bucky, it's fine," he sounds slightly irritated but you don't think you've heard a different tone from him so far, "you're busy?"

"Well, uh, n-not exactly," you shrug, "j-just family s-stuff."

"Family... so you won't be able to go over the script? I just got your edits."

"U-uh, y-yeah, if you want to, I c-can grab my l-laptop," you offer and turn your back to the room.

"I'd prefer it if we could meet. I'm more of a face-to-face person."

"O-old-fashioned," you comment. You regret that he exhales deeply on the other end. "S-sorry, I o-only meant--"

"You're right. I'm old-fashioned. Not a bad thing," he insists, "so, is it too late? Should we find another time?"

"T-tomorrow?"

"I'm going out of town for the weekend," he huffs, "I really want to have this ready to record when I get back."

"R-right," you chew your thumb, a sudden bawling tears through the air as you spin around and find your nephew stuck under the tree. Oh no! "Oh, sh-shoot."

You cover the microphone as you lower the phone. Your sister rushes in, your mother at her heels as they squeal. You watch helpless as she fishes Casey from under the fir branches, "you were supposed to be watching them," she accuses.

"I-I was?"

"Oh, come on, you know, I barely get a minute to myself and you can't just keep an eye on two kids? Ugh, no job and you can't be bothered just to look," she snarls.

They're not your kids. You flutter your lashes as you fight back tears and that smart remark.

"I actually h-have a c-call from m-my new job," you hold out your phone and wiggle it at her, "I d-don't b-babysit f-for free."

She scoffs and your mom tuts as she shakes her head. They don't even care. No congratulations but they can constantly throw your unemployment in your face. You take a breath and roll your eyes.

"S-sorry, I g-got to go," you turn and drag your feet out of the room.

"Well, she didn't say she had a job," your mother mutters as your sister grumbles back, "about time."

You ignore them as you head upstairs. It's better you let your sister bask in her spotlight. You weren't looking forward to dinner anyhow. Not for anything more than the hunger groaning in your stomach. You put the phone back to your ear.

"A-are you there? S-sorry, I g-got distracted."

"Really, if you're busy--"

"N-no, I n-need to get a-away," you say.

You're silent at the confession. You didn't mean to sound so pathetic. You go down the hall to your room and find a sweater.

"Well, uh, how about we meet at the cafe? Middle ground. You like that place?"

"Up t-to you," you murmur, your voice barely above a whisper.

"You need a ride?" He asks, to your surprise.

You pause as you grip the bright pink wool in your hand, "N-no, I'll f-find my way." You swallow and lay the sweater on your bed, "uh, b-bye."

You hang up before he can respond. You're embarrassed. He probably heard all of that and more. And now you've gone and betrayed your stupid self to him. Of all people. He doesn't need to know you're a complete failure. You hate to accept it but you have to; you need him more than he needs you. So maybe you'll just change the damn thesis after all.

You get to the coffee shop with snow caked on your hat and in the collar of your coat. You shake it off just outside and enter, your cheeks and nose kissed with the cold. As much as you love the winter, it's a bit much. You let out a brrr as you pull of your mitts and tuck them inside your hat. You hear your name and glance over. It's him, he's beat you there.

You tramp over to him as the snow melts off your boots and you wave, setting your bag in the chair as you unbutton your coat.

"Didn't m-mean t-to take too l-long," you say.

"Hot chocolate shouldn't be that cold," he assures you. You wince and look at the table. Sure enough, there's a second cup.

"O-oh, you d-didn't have t-to--"

"It's fine, not a big deal," he shakes his head.

You nod and hang your coat over the back of the chair and tuck away your mittens and hat in the sleeve. You sit and bring your bag into your lap. You flip up the flap and pull out your laptop, chilly from the walk there. You sense him watching you. You leave your computer shut as you lay it out and reach for the hot chocolate. You give it a taste and hum, thanking him.

"Sounds like a rough day," he comments.

"Y-yeah, b-but you d-don't have to w-worry about it," you assure him, glancing around evasively. When is he going to start being mean?

"You got kids?" He asks.

You have to hold in your laughter. "Sister's k-kids," you explain, "n-not for m-me."

"Ah," he accepts and reaches for his coffee, "right. Makes sense."

You keep your eyes down. You don't want to get too personal. Feels like he's just being polite, likely because he feels bad for you, not about his previous behavior.

"Don't got any either," he leans forward, his thick fingers hugging his cup, "so, your new draft was... great."

"R-really?" You lift your gaze meekly.

"Yeah, yeah, I just have a few notes," he sits back to bend down to the bag at his feet, "thanks for coming so last minute.”

You open your laptop, trying not to show any emotion. It's kind of him but you just don't believe it's anything other than pity.

Some info about it:

An art challenge started by me to celebrate mcytblr's creations! Specifically OCs or fancharacters inspired by the gimmick of an smp, the story or origin of your favorite character, fankids, fanpets and similar!

All the prompts were chosen through a poll and the most popular option between three words was selected.

If anyone is wondering you can absolutely draw other people's fancharacters (as long as they allow it) and in fact, from me at least, you're encouraged to.

For art I don't only mean traditional and digital drawings, I also mean paintings, writing, singing, web weaving, anything that is creation! If you write something and post it on AO3 please make a post on the challenge's tag and link your work :) go nuts with it and have lots and lots of fun ! :D

There's no obligation to make all 31 prompts, even just one that you like a lot. You should post it on the day you've chosen, you don't have to make it on that day.

And don't worry if you're late to the party, you can post prompts you've missed, sometimes schedules are hard and posting on time is impossible, so no worries.

Also maybe you didn't know about this and you wanna make something. Go for it ^_^.

So, my new pfp is lifted directly from my female MC's Pinterest board for that original novel I'm writing. Clara/V(iper) has big "from rags to nightmare" energy as someone who was stolen away at a young age and then transforms into a fearsome individual under guidance from those who are, essentially, antagonists/villains in that world (or at least many perceive them as such) after getting caught up in power games between two powerful families. Codenamed "Viper", or Vipère (sexually charged) if you're Jean Laurent. Eventually, she becomes a leader of her own ragtag team of criminals and master poisoner. You can find more of her vibes here if you like her aesthetic.

My header pic is actually directly from the Sandman comics! There is some stunning art between issues, and I'm obsessed with that one. I captured it from my copy and edited it a bit (it gave me fat Dream/Wanderer vibes).

As for my blog title, you are correct. It's French and once again ties into my novel (as it is primarily set in modern-day France). L'appel du vide is French for "call of the void", a big thematic message for the three main characters in ASE (against the serrated edge) and leaning into the notion that they are all bound by very destructive darkness within (and they are, the leading trio are morally grey at best).

On friendship scape I give you 9.9/10!! You’re very comforting and easy to talk to and always indulgent to rambles or vents, the only reason I took of .1 is because I feel we don’t talk as often as we could, and I while appreciate you always making sure I feel safe enough to infodump or talk about life, I get the feeling that you don’t really feel comfortable enough to do the same with me? hi. not to demand a bunch of labour from u that i'm not entitled to but i wasn't sure who else i knew to turn to on this. so i made a drawing for the khr fandom, and i wanted to make an ID to make it more easy accessible. the problem is that i do not have the experience to make one, or to make any of i do future art. therefore i though about you, who makes a lot of IDs and though that i could ask if you had any tips for how to make a good ID that will actually be beneficial to people who need it, that i can put to use to make my own content better.

again, if u lack time or inclination to sit down with this ask I wouldn't fault you, but however you end up doing i really admire your effort to the community and im thankful you took the time reading it.

hi, nonny! don't worry, i don't mind your question, and i'm happy to help you start on IDs as best as i can. quick disclaimer though: i still consider myself a beginner at those, so if i get anything wrong, anyone is welcome to correct me, and is even more welcome to advice nonny here better than i could!

okay so, here's the post that just so happened to be on my dash one day, and introduced me to IDs and the idea of making the internet a more accessible place in general. It has links to a lot of different resources I warmly recommend you to click through and read.

here are two comprehensive posts, this one and that one that walk you through starting making IDs as a beginner, and how to make them in a way that'll actually make whichever content it is for more accessible. they really gave me solid bases in IDs, and helped me feel confident enough I won't mess up too badly to take those first scary steps in starting to make IDs myself, so I hope they'll do the same for you.

this blog @ keplercryptids is known partly for their accessibility content. the faqs link in their bio as well as their pinned post have really good resources and posts about IDs, which I also warmly recommend you read through. they’re also welcome to questions about IDs if there's ever something you don't feel too confident about, and they're always super nice about it. they even have a discord server for people doing IDs, and to help other people doing IDs, and even to make IDs for other people if discord is your thing!

oh, and also, plain text! < this is a super helpful and comprehensive post about it, but if it's too much for now, just remember that IDs are the most accessible in plain text!

and that's pretty much how I started, nonny. after you learn about IDs and how to do them properly, it's all about practice, and learning from others doing IDs too by reading theirs, and picking up what you're lacking and what you can improve yourself on from them. and i know it can be scary because you don't want to mess up, but any ID is better than none even if it might not feel like it, and you'll get better at them by doing them, so please, just go for it! you can always edit them as you get better at them anyway, or other people will add what they think is missing from your IDs, and what I'm saying is that it won't be set in stone forever after you published them, so don't pressure yourself too much about needing to get them perfectly right away.

if it can help though, you're welcome to run your ID through me after writing it! and if you're comfortable coming off anon (i'd answer you privately then if you want), or comfortable showing me the drawing in question before anyone else, I can even help you write that ID.

and thank you for the acknowledgment! 🥺 like, i'm of course happy to do them because i want to do my part making the internet more accessible, but it's time and energy, and this past month especially i did quite a lot of IDs, so sometimes i just really need to hear it's appreciated. 💞

and likewise, nonny, i'm super happy and grateful you want to start doing IDs too! especially for the khr fandom which is, you know... lacking in this department to say the least lol. just let yourself start small, and you won't even realize when they'll start coming to you naturally.

Hi! Omg I'm really glad you asked!! First, you're welcome :) I also now see you added alt text to the post, that's awesome! (Everyone go look at it it's so good)

If you edit the original version of a post, the edit unfortunately won't carry over to reblogs unless someone reblogs the newly edited version. As in, if I make a typo in a post and edit it retroactively, the person who reblogged it before I could edit it would have the og on their blog, as would anyone who reblogged from them. So if the alt text was added in after you initially posted, people unfortunately won't see that in old reblogs

In general, the best practice with IDs is to add them in plain text in the body of a post directly below the image or image set! Alt text is obviously great for people who use screenreaders, but not everyone who needs IDs uses those, so it's better for IDs to be directly visible in a post

i really try my hardest to stay neutral and friendly as well as respecting and following everyone else’s blog rules so i’d really appreciate any feedback or insight if you’re happy to give it. whatever i did, once again, im so incredibly sorry to bother you, i don’t mean any harm at all, ever. if i did something to offend you, it was never intentional, all i really try to do on tumblr is rb pictures of cats most of the time anyways.

Jdndjd i wanted to explain it more detailed but im on my bed and my eyes are beginning to droop so I'll just say one technical thing about this first song. It's a jazzy piece that has a lot of syncopation. Idk if ive already talked about that or i just think i have become i did BUT THEN TUMBLR CRASHED 😭😭😭 BUT syncopation in a nutshell means something is off beat. If you want to try it out, you can count 1-4 out loud and clap woth your hands faster or slower than the pace of your counting. Whatever beats that fall out of the numbers are syncopations!!!! HAHAHHA ok ok they could be syncopations given the context.

I was really excited to hear your thoughts on this one because this song is actually more unique than the first one i think HAHAH jus cause its time signature is 5/4. Just to give you an idea, im pretty sure most pop songs, and im 99% certain that all the songs in the playlist you shared to me are 4/4. This basically means the beat/rhythm of the music can be divided into 4 parts. Usually the strongest beat in a 4/4 song is 1 then theres and accent or slightly strong pulse on 3. You could try counting that. Strong on 1, slightly strong on 3. Thats the 'conventional' meter.

Then inversely, if the accent is strong on 2 and a lil on 4, those songs are usually reggae. Try it. If it makes sense lol HAHHAHAH

Now 5/4 since its uneven is quite tricky. You basically treat the division of the beat as 3/4 + 2/4, both meters individually would have their accent on their first counts, so if you put it together it would be 1 & 4 with strong pulses. 😭 I hope I didn't confuse you with math. Youre good at math but idk if im good at explaining.

Also just an additional thing in music 4/4 is read as four-four, 5/4 as five-four not like a fraction. your head will be chopped off if you put a line between your numbers in the time signature so HAHAHAHA now you know lol there's just really no other way to write it so lol
