For the Black Eagle Strike Force, it's been five years since the war began, but for Byleth, her comrades were her students only a month ago. They've grown up without her and shared so many moments together that she has missed—so she hopes this moment with Edelgard will last forever.

Edelgard had long since removed her crown and placed the horned diadem upon her desk next to reports from Adrestian generals and spies that were still very much in need of reading; the gold and steel became cool to the touch far too quickly and easily for her to wear it much outside of her official duties. When her hair hung down, no longer tied into buns around her crown, she almost looked just like she had as a student five years ago (though Byleth thought her hair had gotten much longer since then—it was the only part of her body that had grown at all). She still had a forehead so high that sometimes Byleth felt an irresistible urge to take a pen and start writing on it, just to fill up the space. It hadn’t been five years for Byleth, though. To her, Edelgard had been her student and eighteen years old on the day the Adrestian army had surged over Garreg Mach’s defenses, and the next morning, she was twenty-two (going on twenty-three) and though she hadn’t grown an inch, there’d been an older look to her—wearier, burdened. The burdens may have largely remained the same—she’d always been fighting her war long before the first troops had begun to march—but they weighed on her now more heavily. All that in a day. And now Edelgard, nearly five years older, talked to her about all the little moments between the Black Eagle Strike Force—who Byleth still thought of as all her students—she’d been absent for.

This is about to be barely coherent but I think you need to hear about it.

I just recalled a movie I used to watch and a particular scene in which 2 revolutionaries are spending a rainy night in a hut. I can't find a clip to confirm, but as I recall it, Jean, who is the captain of the whole revolutionary dealio, pauses mid-makeout to talk about revolution stuff while her partner in the scene just sort of nods along and continues to kiss her. (Don't question the logistics: it's a comedy from the 50s)

Again, I'm sure I'm not sounding very coherent, BUT THE POINT IS pausing mid-makeout to talk about revolutionary stuff while her partner nods along and continues to kiss her is an incredibly Edelgard thing and I thought you need to hear about it.

I want you to know this inspired me so much I am now writing a fic. I wanted to finish it before answering this ask but this'll probably take a while so here's a preview:

Byleth wanted to get this right.

After their initial engagement, their partner and them had not been able to properly ease into the newly romantic character of their relationship; the threat of Those Who Slither Through The Dark, ever-present and all consuming, had been at the top of their minds. If they really were to be the light that shone upon Fodlan, they first needed to get rid of the pesky shadows underneath it; only then could peace truly reign, only then could the continent be truly united under the Emperor’s leadership, only then could they truly be together in the world they had created.

And they had done just that. Finally, after a thousand years, the head of the snake had been cut off. Agartha was well on its way to being reintroduced to the rest of the Fodlanese population now that the iron rule of Thales had finally ended, which had not come without its lot of issues. It certainly wasn’t easy for everyone to realize that people had lived underneath their very feet for centuries, nor was it to share their land, a land which fate they were still uncertain of: but after months of negotiating and peacekeeping, the Black Eagle Strikeforce had managed to install a semblance of peace, laying the foundations for what would hopefully happen to be a bright new future for Fodlan.

Now, however, Byleth wished to focus on their and Edelgard’s future.

They had decided to learn how to flirt.

Their first instinct had been to go to Garreg Mach’s library. They still remembered their first time there like it was yesterday: back then, they had been absolutely blown away but the sheer massiveness of the shelves filled to the brim with the knowledge they clearly lacked about the world around them. It also happened to be the first time they had felt intellectual emulation coursing through their veins- and before they could completely understand that sensation, they had found themself with their nose buried in books for the whole morning, feeding on all that new information. After they had officially been nominated as a professor, they had gone back, trying to find ways to convey their thoughts and expertise to their students in an organized, more academic manner- and whenever they visited, the contents of the books would most likely always hold an answer for them.

These romance books were no exception.

Arianrhod's One-Year Anniversary; Burning Update

Today marks the one-year anniversary since I published Arianrhod, my first Three Houses fanfic - and the first piece of fanfiction that I'd written and published in over a decade (and my first fic on AO3, and...well, there are some other firsts with this too, but I won't keep belaboring the point, lol. Suffice it to say that it was kind of a big step for me).

Arianrhod is a oneshot, fill-in-the-gaps, but mildly canon-divergent scenario that contends with what I still regard as the greatest failing in Crimson Flower's writing. In it, rather than quietly going along with Edelgard's coverup like she does in the game, Byleth instead makes a reckless (if well-intentioned) attempt to goad Edelgard into addressing the horrific devastation in the wake of Arianrhod's destruction.

On the one hand, I do see the game's treatment of Arianrhod as a terrible problem in Crimson Flower's incredible but also very sloppy writing. But on the other hand, I also perceive it as evidence of some fascinating flaws in Edelgard's character (which are consistent with her characterization throughout the game otherwise). I think that Edelgard's handling of Arianrhod is emblematic (lol) of her tendency to try to skip over processes of grieving, even in the face of catastrophic circumstances and personal tragedy. She's so fixated on achieving her goals and seeing the war through to its end that she's often completely single-minded in her pursuit, even in the face of actual human suffering...which is understandable, given all that she's endured and experienced, but which is also a mistake. She's a complex, flawed woman (which I love about her); but, critically, she's also someone who actively wants for the people around her to call her out when she makes bad decisions. It's for this reason that I decided to "correct" the game's mishandling of Arianrhod not by dismissing its canonicity, but by holding Edelgard accountable (via Byleth) and making her do some important self-reflective work. As such, the fic is largely focused on themes of guilt and culpability - and not just Edelgard's, but Byleth's as well (as she is not off the hook here, and does not let herself off the hook either).

My mental health was at an all-time low when I wrote and posted Arianrhod, which is reflected in the story's subject matter and preoccupations. Periodically, when I look back at it now, there are regrets that I have with it...things that I would do differently, other decisions that I would make if I were writing it in the present. But I have no intention of ever revising or changing it. The story is very much an artifact of that moment in my life, and I want it to stay that way.

Arianrhod then served as the foundation for Burning, my ongoing post-Crimson Flower, multi-chapter fic.

Poor Burning got put on the back-burner (lol again - sorry y'all, I have covid right now and my judgment where puns are concerned is not great) while I got completely derailed with that long-ass Haunting of Bly Manor essay that I posted last week. But now that that's off my plate, Chapter 5 of Burning is my priority again. I currently have 2,800 words on it, so I swear that part of it does, indeed, exist and that I have not forgotten or abandoned it. (I'll confess, however, that I have not ruled out the possibility of writing some Bly fic at some point. But idk if that will happen or not, don't hold me to it).

So...more Edeleth to come (eventually).

Claude has barely even thought of them in half a century.

Then an unexpected guest arrives at his humble Almyran estate, and it's like she's walked straight out of his memory and onto his doorstep. The United Kingdom of Fódlan was left stunned and grieving when their queen disappeared a few years ago, but she’s alive—and while time has weathered Claude’s body and withered his senses, she doesn't seem a day older than when he last saw her, back when he was still a brash young man whose world had yet to be changed forever.

He could tell her to leave. He could say the word and have her back in Fódlan or sitting in an Almyran dungeon before the week is out. But there’s serenity in no longer being the last of a dying breed. Claude could use some company in the quiet and lonely days of his retirement, and seeing a familiar face after all this time might do Teach some good, too.

What are your favorite fanfic tropes?

Oooooh, that’s a great question!

I think there’s a bit of a discrepancy between what I like to read and what I like to write, namely when it comes to my angst tolerance. Hurt/comfort is my absolute favourite genre, but when reading I tend to prioritise fluffier stories than what I typically write myself. When writing, I’m in control of the angst levels, and I know there will always be a happy ending, so I’m not as heartbroken when things turn sour.

That being said, relationship drama is generally not for me. It can work and is even expected in specific contexts though (for instance: Adrien finding out Mari hid so many plot elements from him). I guess it all depends on context and how attached I am to the ship.

My all-time favourite tropes are:

Found family! Love as a choice instead of a predetermined bond! Bonus if we’re talking about siblings.

Former antagonist does the work of fixing their mistakes and repairing the relationships they ruined. Hurt/comfort ensues.

Former antagonist takes care of the hero, who has been bottling way too many emotions and now needs to be rescued back (YES Senticousins YES Clive and Hershel). Hurt/comfort ensues.

Any story that involves themes of surviving abuse and learning kindness. But I also love me some sweet sweet catharsis, Bumbleby VS Adam style.

For shippier fics: two characters drastically challenging each other’s worldview and growing together as a result. Think Feligami, Edeleth, and my take on Clemmy.

Queer/neurodivergent characters or coding. This goes double for the Sentikids because [gestures wildly at the themes]

SMART!!!!! CHARACTERS!!!!! This applies to more than fanfiction, of course, but I can’t not mention it. Bonus if they’re a redeemable antagonist outsmarting an objectively shittier villain.

And probably more I’m not thinking of at the moment!
