Eärendil the Mariner
Who deserves a pirate outfit more than Eärendil?
The background is largely inspired by one of Philip Sue's paintings. It was fun to draw a flat earth!
In other news, I love drawing ships but that was the worst angle possible to figure out. In my head, the Silmaril is at the prow in some kind of glass/mirror lantern that amplifies its light.
I wanted him to look soft, and little wry maybe, rather than fierce. I'm sure he's fierce aplenty but I mostly headcanon him as tired. His fate breaks my heart. Also, it doesn't really show here but my Eärendil is blind from overexposure to the Silmaril (and half-human fragile eyes).
I always waver between giving him locs or a shorter Mannish haircut, but his hair is really too kinky for the shoulder-length, Aragorn-style cut, so locs it is!

Eärendil. Overexposed and washed out by the light of the silmaril.

"Eärendil was a mariner
that tarried in Arvernien
he built a boat of timber felled
in Nimbrethil to journey in…”
There is my illustration of Earendil, with the silmaril on his brow

Earendil armor concept based on this post (by @deadqueernoldor with add on from @camille-lachenille) that was brought back in my notes - no sword, spear, or shield this time, although I really want to find the time to design that now...
I present to you; action figure style Earendil!!

I wanted to add some blue to him to play around with and I think it turned out okay, although I wanna try some more black like the first drawing of it sometime.
It's Ancalagon's eye scales he used. Probably. Because he's such a big danger noodle.

When Celebrimbor said Elrond looked like the very image of Eärendil standing there. Look at baby Elrond’s face aaaaaaaaaaaaa
Tumblr media
Elrond saying he wonders what his father thinks of him, if he is proud or not, but that it doesn’t really matter as long as he could have one more conversation with his father AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I also thought it was funny how Elrond talked about how the Valar rewarded Eärendil for his journey to Valinor. If only someone had told Elrond the Valar actually wanted to punish Eärendil when he arrived in Valinor tho lmaooo Anyway, look how Elrond sits:

Y’all, don’t underestimate Elwing. Yeah Eärendil does a lot, but Elwing does a lot too.
To start with the little things, it is she who preserves and passes on the Ring of Barahir to her son Elros. But that’s not the only thing she saves.
She saves the WORLD!
Elwing saves the Silmaril from the sons of Fëanor! Without her, there would be no Star of Eärendil because Eärendil would have no Silmaril.
Also, while Eärendil convinces the Valar to help, it is Elwing who persuades the Teleri to lend them their ships so the army can actually get to Middle-earth. Instead of just slaying and stealing like the Noldor, Elwing uses common sense to get ahold of those ships. Rather than waste time building new ships, the Army of the West reaches Middle-earth in time thanks to Elwing securing ships that were already built and ready. Eärendil’s efforts would’ve been for nothing if there were no ships to actually transport the army.
And also, she gets to shapeshift into a bird and fly around whenever she wants.
Elwing is AMAZING!

So I was looking at the Song of Eärendil, as you do, and this line struck me:
“of adamant his helmet tall.”
Guys. Adamant is an old-fashioned word for diamond. My boy really went to sea on a long, dangerous quest wearing a diamond helmet. King, but also, smh 🤦‍♀️
Also, it doesn’t say “studded with diamonds.” It says it was “of adamant.” As in, carved out of a single piece of diamond. The raw thing must have been huge. Like, nowadays we consider a diamond the size of someone’s hand to be unspeakably huge. This would have been the size of his head. Can we all agree that it was definitely Maeglin who first mined this piece, or at the very least, someone taught by him?

Did anyone else notice this line in the Silmaril?
"But they took Vingilot and hallowed it, and bore away through Valinor to the uttermost rim of the world; and there is passed through the Door of Night and was lifted up even into the oceans of heaven."
Sound familiar at all?
"and Varda hallowed the Silmarils, so that therefore no mortal flesh, not hands unclean, not anything of evil will might touch them but it was scorched and withered."
While the Silmarils were cool by themselves, maybe it was Varda who gave them their frankly insane powers (hurting Morgoth, allowing Carcharoth to bypas Melian's Girdle, reaching Valinor, etc)?

Okay, I guess I’m doing this! Part 2 of Melkor in the Void, aka I mess around in Procreate as long as I don’t have to try to draw people. Based on a post by @curufiin. Featuring Eärendil this time (by way of his silmaril). Original idea and part 1 here.

(I discovered the flare brush btw. That’s the only reason he looks this good)
I have no idea how far my art skills will take this idea, but whatever. It’s good practice!

Mind you this was done some time ago and I think I have improved at drawing. I just now got around to coloring it and when I asked people wanted to see it, nonetheless I still like it and will probably make a redraw once in the future.
