Eärendil the Mariner
Who deserves a pirate outfit more than Eärendil?
The background is largely inspired by one of Philip Sue's paintings. It was fun to draw a flat earth!
In other news, I love drawing ships but that was the worst angle possible to figure out. In my head, the Silmaril is at the prow in some kind of glass/mirror lantern that amplifies its light.
I wanted him to look soft, and little wry maybe, rather than fierce. I'm sure he's fierce aplenty but I mostly headcanon him as tired. His fate breaks my heart. Also, it doesn't really show here but my Eärendil is blind from overexposure to the Silmaril (and half-human fragile eyes).
I always waver between giving him locs or a shorter Mannish haircut, but his hair is really too kinky for the shoulder-length, Aragorn-style cut, so locs it is!

Nolofinwë Week Day Seven: Elrond Sailing to Valinor
Hey, I have feelings.
I have this head cannon that as Círdan's ship carried Elrond to Valinor on the sea Vingilot sailed above in the sky. I think Eärendil guided his son home, I think he heralded his arrival to the Undying Lands. I think when Elwing saw her husband's star so low, and close, and bright she knew that finally after over 6,000 years she was going to see one of her sons again, I think Celebrian knew she was going to see her husband again.
I think Elrond and Elros and their legacies were the happy ending to The Silmarillion with all its grief.
Okay I'm done. Back to being completely normal.
(Also, I absolutely borrowed from @thelien-art's very good Elrond design)

Now when first Vingilot was set to sail in the seas of heaven, it rose unlooked for, glittering and bright; and the people of Middle-earth beheld it from afar and wondered, and they took it for a sign, and called it Gil-Estel, the Star of High Hope. And when this new star was seen at evening, Maedhros spoke to Maglor his brother, and he said: ‘Surely that is a Silmaril that shines now in the West?’

Battle of the Ships
Round 1 Part 2 Poll 6
The art used for the Vingilot is from one of the Silmarillion's covers (I think it was a Chinese one but I wouldn't swear it - I still have the cover saved if anyone's interested)
No description or propaganda for the Vingilote. Feel free to provide some I could use if the ship makes it to another round.
Description for the Ulysses : Developed by Whitmore Industries, it is 382 Feet (116.434 meters) long, can go 18 knots, has 12 torpedo launchers in 6 external ball turrets which capable of firing explosive proximity torpedoes out of launchers that have 180 degrees of movement, and had a crew of 201 at launch! The bridge is located within a glass enclosure at the front of the ship so you can look out into the ocean like you are in an atrium. It's like an air craft carrier but a sub; it also housed 24 mini subpods and many other land terrain vehicles. It was eventually destroyed by a leviathan.
Propaganda for the Ulysses : I mean, see above. But also it just looks so iconic to the movie. Also, like, its HOW they even get to Atlantis at all soooooo

Away From All Danger
He sailed 'cross Belegaer
To find Valinor
The blessèd Eärendil
Stepped foot on the shore
To plead with the Valar
To muster their might
And aid Middle-earth
In their terrible fight
Their course was debated
A choice they must make
Of Eldar or Mortal
Which fate would they take
They set Vingilot
With the Silmaril on high
The blessèd Eärendil
To e'er sail the sky

I absolutely do not believe Feanorians would be thrown into the Void if they did not fulfill their Oath
But would it be interesting, if they did end up in the Void
Because they got sentenced to, you know, Community Service on Vingilot
—————
The issue is, after the world got changed into a Ball, there’s no break for Gil-Estel. Now Vingilot had to circle the globe of the world 24/7 because there’s always one side that is in evening
(Same situation for the Moon and the Sun. But at least the people who drove those were ainur)
The workload & working hour just Duplicated. A totally unexpected disaster
It’s not like Earendil could sleep on his ship; he was supposed to be on guard of the Door of the Night (and probably battle loose little eldritch creatures that slipped through)
So yeah. They needed to recruit.
—————
I don’t think Feanorians were very extra special or something. (I suspect there would be a good amount of Teleri hoping to get the positions because flying ship.)
It’s just that it would be very funny if Feanorians ended up taking turn doing their shifts as part-time additional crew members of Vingilot, and realized “so the Oath’s consequence was very real and very literal just not the way we believed”
(And yeah in a “the Oath actually has power” universe it could be a very smart way to fulfill the punishment without causing huge damage)
(However I just want to see Feanorians spitting at Morgoth in the Void)
(And maybe Celegorm and Tilion knew each other before the Darkening and they’ll get chance to reconnect)

Then the far-sighted among the Elves that dwelt in the Lonely Isle would see her like a white bird, shining, rose-stained in the sunset, as she soared in joy to greet the coming of Vingilot to haven.

🐉 for the Silm asks!
Love your writing and ideas so much!
-@outofangband
🐉 A lot of figures in the Silm have weird Eldritch powers or possibly biology. Tell us about your headcanons for one.
That line about how Elwing doesn't go on Starship Vingilot since she can't endure the cold of the void? Outdated information. (Also it's never explained why Eärendil can bear it, though I guess the implication is the Silmaril protects him.) It maybe takes a few centuries of practice with some friendly maiar of Varda, but she's eventually able to use her Melian Inheritance (TM) to protect herself. She doesn't join him often (four years on Seaship Vingilot was more than enough), but for those with sufficient sight (and/or a really good telescope), the Evening Star can sometimes be seen to have an orbiting planet/moon.
