teenage chuuya and dazai who accidentally developed quite a couple of inside jokes over the course of their partnership, and one day just have the most horrid case of giggles while on a mission.

the setting is all intense and they’re doing what double black usually does—dazai being the brains and chuuya mainly being the one kicking ass. but then something happens that triggers one of chuuya and dazai’s inside jokes in dazai’s mind and he slowly starts to lose it.

he whispers it to chuuya as they’re setting up their trap, who at first hisses at him to shut up and focus up, but then the joke processes in his mind and he involuntarily starts to smile and tremble.

dazai brings up the joke again in combat as he knocks out one of the men he’s fighting, close to hysterics over it even though it’s probably one of the most unfunny and nonsensical jokes they have. he’s hunched over and his body is shaking, and another enemy uses his moment of vulnerability to go and strike him from behind. chuuya quickly takes the enemy out. he screams at dazai to focus up yet again.

but the louder dazai’s laughter gets, the harder it is for chuuya to suppress his own. his face slowly starts to turn red, not from the physical activity, but from how fucking stupid the joke is and how that’s exactly why chuuya is on the verge of going ballistic over it like dazai.

they’re both out of breath by the time they finish fighting, a couple of new scars littered on their skin, bruises already forming on their knees from the particularly gruelling mission, and dazai brings up the joke one final time in a hushed voice, covered in grime and blood and ick, chest heaving. and chuuya, who looks identical, practically shouts in laughter, sending them into a full blown fit that has them clutching their chests and stomachs. they stumble forward and backward and inhale sharply only to immediately burst out laughing again when they look at each others faces, which read the inside joke they’re both thinking. they don’t account the moment in their mission report, but hirotsu certainly does in his.

Do you ever think it’s happened were Chuuya realizes the best course of action is for him to use corruption. But Dazai is rambling off multiple plans that don’t include it.

Eventually Chuuya just yells at Dazai that he’ll use corruption to get the mission done and over with, thinking that Dazai is just messaging around.

Instead Dazai gets quiet and for a brief moment and he gets vulnerable and admits he’s scared he won’t be able to save chuuya in time.

Chuuya, for the first time, sees how nervous and stressed Dazai is. The weight of having to save him all the time heavy on his shoulders. All the time Dazai handled the responsibility of having to succeed or his least favorite partner (best friend and most trusted person) will straight up die.

Chuuya doesn’t use corruption, instead he agrees with a different plan even though it will be harder. But if Dazai always gives Chuuya a choice, Chuuya will do that same for him.

theyre in a joint mission between the agency and pm and chuuya accidentally calls dazai "samu". dazai replies normally as if nothing happened and they go back to doing what they were doing until they notice every ada and pm member staring at them like they saw a ghost. (except kouyou because she was the only one invited to the wedding)

In honour of me being the queen of never listening to my body and working through my illness, here are some headcanons about Chuuya being sick

- Refuses to admit he is sick and insists on working, even when he is clearly in no state to be working

- Hates medicine, he never learned to take it when he was in the sheep, so when Dazai tries to give him medicine in the mafia he is just confused

- He has since learned to take medicine but refuses unless it is absolutely needed. Like fx he refuses meds for a headache or cold. But will except meds after corruption

- He will lie to everyone around him and say he has taken meds, when he hasn’t, just so they don’t pester him about it.

- Dazai obviously knows he’s lying but chooses to not comment on it, as a sick Chuuya is an irritated Chuuya, so even the smallest of taunts will set him off

- Kouyou also knows he’s lying and will without a fail call him out on it, but he just insists that he has and she eventually has to leave it or else she looks crazy for insisting, especially when Dazai won’t back her up even when he knows that she knows, that he knows

- Chuuya has no appetite when sick and will go the whole day without eating and then feel even worse

- Leading to Dazai having to step in and order food for them and force Chuuya to sit down and eat

- Also good luck ever getting him to call in sick, it legit hasn’t happened in all the time he has worked for the mafia. Dazai always ends up calling in for Chuuya, without his knowledge of course

- When Dazai eventually gets him to stay home and stay in bed, he gets so sleepy and not whiny per say but he will complain about how in pain he is

- While refusing meds of course

- Dazai normally either gives up on the meds or annoys Chuuya to such a degree that he takes them

- They normally end up cuddling when Chuuya is sick, the feeling of no longer human works wonders for lowering a fever and it gets Chuuya to sleep

Chuuya is an alcoholic and always smells of it, Dazai is a chain smoker and always smells of that, so, during their mafia days, they would always smell of both cause they spend so much time together until Dazai left and someone asked Chuuya if he quit smoking cause he didn't smell of it anymore and he broke down in tears in his room right after

touch starved

Really, I think both Dazai and Chuuya are extremely touch starved but solve it in their own ways. Dazai being more forward of the two, giving Chuuya head pats, lingering touches to "annoy" him, but he does it all out of the sake of just wanting to touch him. Chuuya on the other hand isn't as forward, and his methods are more "aggressive" per say, punches to the arm when he's annoyed. Slaps, anything of that sort, but only because he's not used to giving affection so he does it in the only way he knows how.

Ok, listen, what if

after walking out of the dungeon reunion, Chuuya stopped for a moment as a soon as he reached an empty corridor, took a deep breath and smiled.

“That sly bastard,” he says. “Shitty Dazai didn’t change one bit, huh? How annoying.”

And it’s the fondest, softest, most secret comment — a second of reluctant weakness in the privacy of an empty corridor.

It’s a ‘thank-god-he’s-fine’, ‘thank-god-we-are-still-the-same’ moment of hesitation. It’s a second of nostalgia before heading back to work.

Because Chuuya would die before admitting it, but he is mad relieved that Dazai — that both of them, really, and their rotten bond and silly dynamic — didn’t change in four years.

Unpopular opinion : I kinda hate when fics make Dazai very introverted. I know most of the fandom believes that Dazai is more introverted and Chuuya is extroverted and I kinda see this trope in the Gakuen/ High school AUs. Please note that this has sensitive topics like SH , suicide etc.

BUT. I think that Dazai tends to run on his social battery literally. We see him being more happy(?) with others especially at the ADA. So, personally I think to hurt himself he wouldn’t self harm, I think he would isolate himself as punishment. He’s the one with the go lucky extroverted personality.

Now, on to Chuuya. Chuuya has a loud, rather brash personality. The way he talks, the he way he walks and generally presents himself is confident and just screams extroverted. Another misconception about introverts and extroverts is confidence. Not all introverts don’t have confidence to talk or to generally mingle, they just prefer some lonely time to themselves or limited to a certain amount of people. At the same time, not all extroverts are so confident. I think even though Chuuya gets to know subordinates and their family and everything , he keeps everything at an arms length. It’s the mafia obviously, you can’t really be close with anyone or else they might die (RIP Oda).

He doesn’t isolate himself per say but he isn’t too friendly with everyone either? Stormbringer spoilers here: the flags died and he believed it was his fault to this day ( survivors guilt poor Chuuya). So since storm bringer he would try to not be too close with everyone even Dazai and Kouyou? But that failed obviously. I think he’s an ambivert with an extrovert exterior.
