Ok, not my usual post.
My friend Tina (FarmGirlInMiddleOfNowhere) who use to be on here and I was talking about things that have been going on in the world today.
Due to the uncertainty in the world, she asked if I would post something that she use to post a couple times a year for the ladies on Tumblr. I had to look up a different site than she used, since the one she use to post is no longer online. So here it is.
How to make homemade feminine pads.
Tina asked me to pass on:
Please share with others. This can be a way to save money, to have emergency back-up until you can get back to the store or to have on hand if everything hits the fan and stores are closed for a long time. Or just copy/download the pattern and instructions and put them with the rest of your patterns for later.

Heating and Cooling the House with Your Clothes Dryer:
First of all, this method of dryer venting should only be used for ELECTRIC dryers (not gas). Additionally, this may be regulated or prohibited by government or may void the dryer warranty so check these out, if you wish, before proceeding with the installation. As with any information you receive, it's always best to do your own [thorough] research before proceeding at face value. Now that that is out of the way, let's proceed with this post. While researching a dryer venting solution for my friend, I found this option. Because he was renting and did not want to drill a 4 inch hole in the wall, this seemed to be the best solution for him, along with the added benefit of heating his home while drying clothes. His landlord did not express opposition to the idea. There are several configurations, most of which use water to collect the dust that would normally blow into the home environment; some have better filtering than others and you can also make one yourself (DIY). We selected the FUNMAS 3-in-1 Indoor Dryer Vent because of its filtering and functional design. Basically, instead of running the ducting hose from the dryer to an external vent, the ducting hose is run from the dryer to the Indoor Dryer Vent. It is recommended to clean the indoor vent as needed or after 6-12 uses, depending on the model used. Additionally, the ducting hose should be periodically cleaned out as lint accumulates in its folds and at the dryer exhaust. Totally remove the ducting hose from the dryer and Indoor Dryer Vent, take it outside, and use a brush, leaf blower or vacuum to clean out the accumulated lint residue. Then vacuum out the dryer exhaust before reattaching the ducting hose. Because the heat from the dryer is not being forced outside, the heat remains in the home which could lower the winter heating bill. Just make sure the Indoor Dryer Vent is not enclosed but exposed to allow the heat to escape to the rest of the house. Also consider that humidity will increase in the house as the dryer removes water from the clothes so running a dehumidifier may be beneficial. Consider other environmental issues as well. Unfortunately, summer is a different matter and another solution may need to be considered to avoid making a warm home warmer. If venting outdoors is impossible, consider hanging clothes outside or employing one or more of these options. Now, if you're really energetic, the clothes dryer can also be used to cool your home in the summer by pulling attic heat into the dryer's intake which also pulls cooler outside air into the attic to cool the attic and the house. Because the dryer is pulling heated air from the attic, the dryer's heating element may be used less during the drying cycle, saving money. So, How to Build an Astrolabe: Overview
Tumblr media
Let’s gooooooooo! 🎉 🔭
Part One is live! Long time coming, but it is finally out. Biggest project I’ve undertaken for the History Survival Guide so far but learned a lot and I am excited to finally get a chance to share this
This is a step-by-step guide to the complete construction of an astrolabe that I think might exist. At least, in any accessible form
This work is a synthesis of dozens of papers/books, one or two out-of-print books, a book entirely in French that I had to translate each section as I read, a few emails to authors, and one long Twitter conversation with a museum curator
My goal is for this to be as accessible as possible for any kind of reader, so if there are any questions, feel free to reach out
🚀 Enjoy! Stay safe and keep learning, fellow chrononauts 🚀

Trying to train myself to not waste food.
I've mainly been doing well with fruit and veggie waste and I'm open to anything else. But here's what I do know.
Storing fruits in airtight jars keeps them fresh longer to prolong the process it takes to spoil
If and when your fruits are starting to soften (before they start developing mold) blend them into a smoothie. The sugar content is higher at this stage and once mold starts forming it not only becomes unsafe to ingest but start to turn tart and sour.
Put fruit cuttings into a pot and fill with enough water to cover all the scraps. Put the pot to boil then turn it off. Keep the pot on the heat until it slightly cools then strain. You can add sugar, lemon juice, and or ginger and you now have a great tasting fruit juice.
Let me know if you have any other tips. I'm still learning and with all the seeds I've saved I've even started germinating some seeds and have some seedlings to plant soon.
Tumblr media
BONUS: Some planting tips I also learned that isn't well known
Mango seeds have a seed within the seed that looks like a large bean. That's the seed you can germinate/plant
Mint, rosemary and thyme can live on just water and don't need soil. You may need water soluable plant food to help it sometimes though. This also applies to pathos plants and lentils.
The pH balance of water can affect how plants absorb nutrients. You want a balance or at least a pH between 5.5 and 7
Trees can grow in pots but will just need a little more care. I found this one extremely helpful as someone who hasn't found their forever home yet

How to make Mozzerella VS how to make Paneer. Bonus, how to make butter.
Mozzerella is a non-aged cheese. You don't need rennet to make it. Take a half gallon of milk and add in 6 tbsp of vinegar (or 3 tbsp of lemon juice). Heat in a pot to 110F. Stir, until curds form.
If you had rennet to add, then you could do it at this stage. Cover and remove from heat and let sit for 10 minutes.
Strain and squeeze curds til you have a ball of cheese. Save the whey. Heat this cheese ball again -- either 30 seconds in the microwave, or 1 minute back in a warm bath of the remaining whey. Strain again, then fold and stretch your cheese a few times til you have a solid and smooth consistency. Refridgerate up to 2 weeks.
Paneer is also a non-aged cheese. This cheese is not meant to melt. Take 4 cups of heavy cream and heat in a pot to 194f. Stir occasionally. Add 3tsp of vinegar. Should begin to curdle at this stage. Make sure its completely curdled, add 1-2 more tsp of vinegar if nothing seems to be happening. Once fully curdled, switch off the heat. Strain completely, squeeze all of the whey out of the cheese. Rinse with room temp water. Leave strainer or hang cheesecloth bundle for about an hour. If you want the paneer to be firmer, leave in a press for 30 mins instead. The longer it sits though, the firmer it will be. Cut and store for 2-3 days or use right away.
Stinging Nettle Rennet as substitute for vinegar: How To Make Nettle Rennet For Cheesemaking - Cultures For Health
Butter is extremely simple to make. It's basically like uncooked cheese. Approx. 5 cups heavy cream in a jar -- a couple shakes of salt (optional) shake until the whey separates from the fats. You can get results within 15 mins. Strain -- rinse -- you have butter!

yakumo loves listening to quincy talk about nature and life in the forest. it seems to be the one topic he feels very comfortable talking endlessly about, and it allows quincy the rare opportunity to show off one of his many skills: being an excellent teacher.
yakumo cherishes the subtle hint of excitement in quincy’s voice when he asks the forest guardian which trees bear fruit in each season, or what the best places to find bait for fishing are. and quincy always explains so diligently, never annoyed at the serpent’s endless stream of questions. in fact, he seems happy that yakumo is intently listening to anything and everything he has to say.
it’s been a long, long time since quincy talked so much his throat started to hurt, but, despite disliking all things troublesome, he doesn’t actually mind.
he.. missed the feeling of being a teacher, of having curious minds constantly ask him questions, of having so many people look to him for advice and guidance. he’d almost forgotten how good it feels to help others, especially those he considers loved ones.

Survival Uses of Chewing Gum:
Go into any grocery store, gas station, convenience store and you’re going to find packs and packs of chewing gum. What used to be considered a candy, has now become a health food (of sorts) as gum makers have moved to create gum that’s healthy for your teeth, won’t cause health issues and may be made to address a specific benefit like staying awake (caffeinated). While chewing gum isn’t on the same level as a water filter or a camping stove, you’ll find that keeping some of this stored in your survival kit or bug out bag is a worthwhile addition. How can Chewing Gum Help You Survive?
Scientifically proven to alleviate anxiety and stress, lowering Cortisol.
Fights fatigue and improve mental alertness.
Enhances working memory and brain performance.
Improves concentration.
Boosts morale and energy.
Aids digestion by increasing the salivary flow.
Quenches thirst and prevents "dry mouth" by stimulating saliva.
Suppresses an appetite to lose weight or when eating is not convenient.
A sticky substance to bind things together and fill gaps.
Fishing lure.
Fishing bobber/float (Survivorman, Georgia Swamp, S1E4).
Bartering tool.
Promotes oral health by breaking down food particles brushing can't reach.
Prevents watering eyes while slicing onions.
A fine addition as composting material.
Freshens Breath.
Combats acid reflux, nausea and dizziness.
Curbs addictions (like smoking and eating)
Start a Fire with Foil Gum Wrapper and Battery
Removes "Earworms" (a song or thought stuck in your head).
