after seeing many misconceptions on the ages of the characters and also the general lack of knowledge on relevant key events, I thought I'd create a timeline!

A comprehensive breakdown of important dates in Repo! The Genetic Opera:

1993: Rotti Largo was born (July 14th)

2006: On April 5th, the first ever death for NOS (Neuro-Overstimulation Syndrome) was recorded. GeneCo was then founded later that month in Milan, Italy by Giuseppe Largo and Dr. Michael Whatley who eventually discovered a treatment using an experimental drug called Zydrate and genetic manipulation.

2011: Marni was born (No date)

2016: Nathan was born (No date)

2017: Blind Mag was born (July 5th)

2019: Luigi Largo was born (November 20th)

2024: Pavi Largo was born (September 29th)

2025: By this point, The Genetic Opera, an interactive TV show, was sponsored by GeneCo to promote designer organs and keep the public "status-conscious" in order to continue boosting profits.

2032: Carmela Largo/Amber Sweet was born (August 23rd)

2035: Graverobber was born (No date)

2036: Marni brings Mag to meet Rotti Largo

2039: Shilo Wallace was born (August 27th), Marni Wallace dies, Nathan becomes a repo man

2040: Mag's eye transplants (March 21st)

2048: Blind Mag's Corpus Crusade tour

2053: Tao of Mag, a charity concert event held for blindness

2056: Rotti signs his last will and testament, declaring Shilo as the sole heir of his estate (August 7th). The events of the film take place on November 7th - Nathan, Rotti, and Mag die. Shilo presumably goes missing. Amber takes over GeneCo at a later unspecified date.

Some common misconceptions cleared up by the timeline:

Mag did not receive her eyes at 19, the date listed on her repossession chart says otherwise

Marni and Mag have a relatively large age gap. At the time in which Marni brought Mag to meet Rotti, she was already 25, and Mag was only 19. I personally like to think that Marni was a singing mentor of some sort (since in Chase the Morning we see that Mag has a memory of Marni singing), and perhaps worked with disabled people and this is how they met!

The age difference between Shilo and Graves is only 4 years!

Mag and Luigi only have a two year age difference. Her being under GeneCo's thumb since she was 19 and Luigi was 17 is probably why they have a relationship.

On that topic, Nathan is only 3 years older than Luigi, there's no way him or Mag could have "baby sat" the Largos as children if they're all approximately the same age (excluding Amber, but considering Nathan had his own daughter to raise and was a repoman and Mag was a world class opera singer I still doubt that would be the case)

This one doesn't have a specific date, but I felt it should be added regardless: Pavi's face disfigurement seemingly happened very recent to events of Repo! We see several times within the film that there are posters and billboards of him with his original face, even in the pictures Rotti has he didn't have the scarring yet. The posters say that GeneCo offering face replacements will be happening in 2057. Pavi was the one in charge of that, and he was stealing faces prior to his scarring (as seen in the pictures). We also know from several sources, including Luigi himself, that Pavi's face happened because of a botched surgery. It's safe to assume this was because of the new face replacement campaign that was being offered, and it was within the last year or two before the events in the film.

In 2019, a man who pleaded guilty to stabbing a 25-year-old man in a Comstock Township home 27 times was sentenced to between five and 20 years in prison.

Justin Donovan, 39, pleaded guilty earlier to assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.

He had initially been charged with assault with intent to murder, but had his charge reduced as part of a plea agreement.

During Donovan’s sentencing, Kalamazoo County Circuit Court Judge Paul Bridenstine noted the defendant’s “extensive criminal history" in weighing his decision. That history includes nine prior adult felony convictions, 11 adult misdemeanors and, according to Bridenstine, multiple juvenile felony adjudications.

At the time of the incident, per court documents, Donovan had been on parole after serving time for a charge of fleeing police, third-degree. He had been released from jail just days prior to the stabbing.

Donovan eluded police for close to three weeks following the stabbing, but was eventually arrested in the Sherwood Forest Mobile Home Park in Kalamazoo Township.

His victim, Kyle Kelley, testified at a preliminary hearing that Donovan had contacted him via phone after the stabbing and told him that he had attacked him because he found out that Kelley had impregnated Donovan’s former girlfriend while he had been locked up.

Kelley claimed that the stabbing was unprovoked and that he was looking out the window with his back to Donovan when it happened. That is something Donovan’s attorney, Robert Champion, said would have been disputed had the case gone to trial.

According to court documents, Donovan stabbed Kelley 27 times in the neck and head, from behind. At the preliminary hearing, Kelley — who was not present in court for Donovan’s sentencing — had a scar that stretched from ear to ear, going across the front of his throat.

Kelley, who spent three days in the hospital following the incident, testified that he had been told by doctors that “if the blade wouldn’t have hit my jaw I would’ve died.”

“Certainly I consider the circumstances of this incident where you assaulted Mr. Kelley with a knife, numerous stabs, required him to have surgery, as well as blood transfusions in a nearly fatal incident,” Bridenstine said.

Bridenstine also highlighted the fact that Donovan was on parole at the time of the incident and has a “history of amphetamine and other illegal substance use.”

“Based on everything that has been presented, because you have reached agreement with the government to resolve this, I find it just and reasonable to follow that which you agreed to,” he said.

UN peacekeepers have been a permanent presence in the life of Congolese activist William Mbokani. The 22-year-old was born shortly after the blue helmets and their white tanks first rolled into his country – 1999.

But Mbokani says the UN troops have consistently failed him: His mother was killed in 2019 by an Islamist militia called the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), while insecurity around his village in eastern Beni territory means he can’t access his family’s fields.

“For nearly 25 years, we have kept renewing the mandate of a mission that is struggling to do its job,” Mbokani told The New Humanitarian from the nearby town of Butembo, where he is now living. “Instead of the situation improving, it is only getting worse.”

Mbokani is one of hundreds of protesters who have demonstrated in eastern DRC in recent weeks against the UN mission in the country, known by its French acronym MONUSCO and one of the world's largest and most expensive peace operations.

The New Humanitarian sat down with five protesters over the past two weeks. We tried to understand why they are calling for MONUSCO’s withdrawal, and who they think is best placed to protect them from armed groups. Their full answers follow below.

Similar anti-UN protests have occurred in recent years in DRC, but this wave has been especially violent. Peacekeepers have shot dead civilians in acts the UN itself called “unspeakable and irresponsible”. Thirty-six people have died; four of them blue helmets.

“When you see MONUSCO, which has come to protect civilians, shooting at them, it hurts, it makes me cry.”

Jean-Pierre Kasereka Maghetsi, a 28-year-old protester and activist from the civil society youth group LUCHA, said the UN should ensure its peacekeepers are held to account for killing civilians, and that victims’ families are compensated.

“When you see MONUSCO, which has come to protect civilians, shooting at them, it hurts, it makes me cry,” said Maghetsi, who is also from Butembo. “It is unacceptable.”

Prior to the protests, MONUSCO had drawn up a withdrawal plan that envisaged a 2024 departure date contingent on security improvements in DRC. But the upswell of anger has led the Congolese government to announce it is re-evaluating that plan.

The current protests come amid a rebellion by the M23 armed group that has captured parts of the eastern province of North Kivu. Protesters say MONUSCO has shown inaction and failed to clearly acknowledge alleged Rwandan backing for the group.

MONUSCO’s first few years in DRC saw the signing of a power-sharing accord that brought a formal end to the devastating wars of the 1990s and early 2000s. Displacement dropped and armed group activity dwindled.

But conflict fronts then multiplied as new rebellions flared. The number of armed groups mushroomed to over 100, while displacement soared to more than five million. MONUSCO failed to prevent the spiral, and in some ways made things worse.

Recent polling from the Congo Research Group and Kinshasa-based Ebuteli institute suggest a sizable majority of residents in North Kivu and the neighbouring Ituri province now want the mission’s 12,000 troops to immediately leave the country.

The Congolese government has, meanwhile, authorised other foreign military interventions to combat armed groups. This includes a prospective force from the East African Community (EAC), a regional bloc that DRC joined in March.

But protesters – mindful of ruinous colonial rule and endless regional meddling – are wary of more outside interference. And they say an EAC force would involve the same national troop contingents that already make up a chunk of MONUSCO.

“Who will come to save the Congo? It is only us young people who can do it,” said Mbokani, the protester, who was shot on his arm last month but vowed to keep up the rallying.

The following interviews have been edited for length and clarity. They were all conducted in Butembo, one of several towns in eastern DRC where protests have taken place in recent weeks.

Clémence Zawadi, 22-year-old protester: “MONUSCO came to secure us, but there is only insecurity

"I demonstrated to express my disapproval at the actions of MONUSCO. It does things that would not be expected of it. [MONUSCO] came to secure us, but there is only insecurity. It has failed in its primary mission of protecting civilians.

"Although the situation risks worsening when MONUSCO leaves, we will count on our security forces. It's not for nothing that my brothers, sisters, and parents support the army. It's the only [force] we have to defend ourselves.

"Our failure stems from dependence on other outside forces… we think they are with us, when they are not. Congo belongs to the Congolese. Upon the departure of the blue helmets… we will mobilise more strongly to overcome the massacres.

"My message to the president of the republic is this: If he continues to depend on foreign forces, we will never have security in Congo, but if he joins forces with the people, we will manage to restore peace and security!"

William Mbokani, 22-year-old activist:

"Nobody is pushing me to protest. My mother is already dead! Not from an accident or illness. No. [Her] throat was cut by the ADF, under the helpless eye of MONUSCO in Mbau [in North Kivu’s Beni territory] three years ago. Why not get angry? I am 22 years old… [and I was] born and raised in war, despite the presence of MONUSCO.

"Today, I would be at university, because it [was my mother] who financed my schooling, but after her death I had to stop… because there are no more means. I am one of the youngest of 12 siblings. Our eldest had the chance to study well, but the rest of us stopped for lack of means. We lived only thanks to our field, but today we cannot access our crops [due to insecurity].

"Unfortunately, MONUSCO, in which all our hope rested, disappointed us. They have everything they need to defend us, but they don't do anything. They have heavy weapons but that is no use. Since they have been here in eastern Congo, which armed group have they eradicated? [Even] the M23 we heard about when we were kids has just resurfaced.

"It's when I remember all these difficulties that I say to myself: Why is this only happening here to us? Who will come to save the Congo? It is only us young people who can do it."

Jean-Pierre Kasereka Maghetsi, 28-year-old LUCHA activist:

"We demonstrated against MONUSCO to call out its inefficiency. MONUSCO has been in the region for more than 22 years [but it] does not manage to protect civilians in accordance with its mandate.

"MONUSCO recently declared that it does not have the necessary [capacity] to defeat the enemy, including the M23. After more than 20 years, it is inconceivable that it remains here in our country especially when it itself admits that it is incapable of facing up to enemies like the M23 and the ADF.

[Jan. 2023] My Current Fyodor Timeline (Subject to Change)

This is sort of a time-capsule for Fyodor. I'm sure I'll change things as I go, probably drastically, and so I wanted to keep record of where I'm at with him so far. I'd also like to share my current timeline of his life with others. So, here it is:

[August] mother dies

[September] the tragedy; church daycare to orphanage

[October] Alyosha taken into Church

[January] started first year as architecture student

2020

[May] birth of niece

[August] niece’s seizures and first hospitalisation

2021

[April] meets Nikolai

[December] father’s death; moves in with Nikolai due to financial trouble (can’t get by without father’s support) [this is oppressively bleak for both of them, though Fyodor finds himself more comfortable with Nikolai in a one-room than with strangers in a kommunalka]

Fyodor’s first seizure in Nikolai’s presence

2022

[January] still money issues but getting stabilised somewhat; Nikolai starts to develop some hypomania

[February] Mikhail and Margarita come to Petersburg

[April] Nikolai’s spiral into depression

[May] Mikhail fully recovers

[July] Nikolai attends his sister’s wedding, they keep in touch through letters [they should have a novel or two they’re discussing throughout the story, with it ofc showing the theme] [Fyodor will write about money issues, that just has to be]

[September] Nikolai hears about Misha’s wedding and begins to make vyshyvanka for Fyodor (still in Mirgorod, where he bought the materials and pattern from the local tailor)

Fyodor finds out about his Curse; Fyodor kills Sonya (and this somehow cements his “need to kill people” thing that started with his father?... only it’s a bit more nuanced than I first thought, because he pitied his father like Marmeladov pitied Ekaterina Ivanovna. So his father should’ve also died by Fyodor’s own hand for his father’s sake, as well as his siblings’.)

2026-2027

Goes to Japan, sets things up for 3 months, carries out plans for next 3 months, later incarcerated for 3 months in Meursault

Since rn I've pretty much concluded that the only way their backstory can be told is through a series of different genres and different stories, rather than one continuous one, there're some notes about the stories I'm currently working out. Also, not everything is entirely literal, i.e. Fyodor's church didn't turn into a literal orphanage.

Because Tumblr likes to make formatting a living hell, this is much messier than my Google Doc, which didn't translate over well at all (for some reason, Tumblr only allows sub-indentations in the editor, and erases them in the actual post).

Highly spiritual, sees ghosts and was bullied for it as a kid, misunderstood, independent, headstrong, excellent judge of character, can see through people's bullshit, soft and gentle spirited, highly understanding and open minded, can be snarky if she likes you, a mild flirt but oblivious to other's flirting, a yearner, generally chill, bright outlook on life but not to the point of being the sanguine, level-headed, perceptive.

I like to share gpose and WoLqotd type things so now if you see those you can have some background information into who these characters are. I've been playing on and off since 2019 and consistently since Endwalker dropped. I'm always open to discussing lore so feel free to ask questions if you have them. Rhu'by is an existing OC from ttrpgs I'm still fleshing out and is my alt character I made this year (2024), Applesauce is my main character who I started the game with in 2019. I have 2 main timelines/canons happening simultaneously.

Applesauce's canon includes Rhu'by but only as a side character who comes in later in the story.

Rhu'by's canon does not include Applesauce, but has Rhu'by as main participant in the msq (for gameplay and lore purposes)

This is mostly because the events of Ghimlyt Dark are important to both canons but for different reasons and cannot exist in the same canon so 2 canons it is ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

Maybe someday I'll have the confidence to share any of the pounds of fanfic I have written/am writing about them but don't count on it.
