here are some dc characters i imagine being south asian, except the list gets worse and worse
1. Raven ofc, she’s based on Miss India 1965, she basically should be canonically Indian atp. I like to think that she’s South Indian, and that her mother Arella’s side of the family is Christian since that’s a pretty common thing irl for South Indians.
2. Sue Dibny, mainly because I think her name Sue could easily be a nickname for Suhani and I think that’s adorable lmao. Also she’s a character I very much love, despite her cruel and unfortunate history. She IS one of the best detectives and I stand by that.
3. Zatanna. This one I’m not 100% serious about at all tbh, but in some panels she looks so very Desi that I’m just like??? Woah. Also can’t explain it but her personality/vibe also really matches. And it would be cool to have an Italian-Bengali or Italian-Pakistani girly.
4. Jason Todd. Controversial, I know, but his look in the Death in the Family movie was soooo…like you can’t tell me that’s not a Nepali man. Also it would make sense considering that he thought Shiva was his mom…there’d have to be a slight indicator of similarity somewhere. Also I deserve to see myself in a brown character who grew up poor in the streets and is unhinged.
Honorable mention:
I used to imagine Lois Lane as South Asian, but since her recent Korean depiction in the new superman show, I kinda dropped that idea lol. And I’ll never forget when I told one of my old mutuals about my Lois headcanon, and they were like “No, I think she’s Latina. I don’t agree with you at all” 🥲❤️‍🩹 anyways maybe she can be Korean-Bengali…

Raven being Desi
Hello, hello again, I'm back with another tirade! This whole thing started with seeing a fanartist post a drawing of Raven (a DC Teen Titans character created by George Perez) as dark skinned with a Desi associated hooked nose. One commentor began to complain saying 'Raven isn't a dark skinned Indian, she isn't Indian at all'. When the artist pointed out that they were referring to the fact that Raven's original design was based of an Indian model, the astute commentor acknowledged that Ravens 'style' was Indian but was influenced by other models of other nationalities as well, so lets break it down.
Raven's style
Tumblr media
I assume you're talking about the red dot on her forehead. It's called a Bindi and it's not a part of Indian culture, it's a part of Hindu culture. Traditionally, the west has not cared about the difference, assuming any part of Hinduism is just spiritual hokum and using it in art and pop culture without consideration. But no, the Bindi is worn by Hindu women and yes, it is cultural appropriation for the Bindi to be worn by non-Hindus for aesthetic. More of Raven's character involves Hinduism too. Meditation, and chakras also frequently appear in Raven's magic and were also Hindu practices. Then there is the topic of Ravens model.
Tumblr media
Her name was Persis Khambatta. She won Miss India and is the model that George Perez named as the original influence for Raven's character design. But that isn't definitive, I hear you cry. White people can be Hindu too! And the same quote that lists Persis as an influence also lists a Fran MacGregor as a later influence! And that is true, but also like...
Tumblr media
That, dear reader, is Raven in New Teen Titans wearing a Sari, which is one of the traditional styles of clothing for Indian women. All of this combined methinks makes Raven being Desi a pretty decent possibility, right? Well, apparently not, according to some people on Reddit, since there is still the issue of
Raven's Ancestry
Raven's mom is white. She Elizabeth Roth, by both her Germanic last name and her blonde haired character design, is definitely one white lady. And Raven's father is Trigon, aka the devil from the bible. And like, there is no way that there is a historical precedent of Christianity associating Hindu culture with evil (just ignore Indiana Jones the Temple of Doom and the demonisation of Kali and Lord Sheev from Star Trek and Lady fucking Shiva and that time Tim Drake fought an actual Indian god for some fucking reason). I mean there is no way that the bible says anything negative about 'Idol worship' (cough cough Romans 1:21–23, Exodus 20:3–6, 1 Corinthians 10:14 cough). Is it really that much of a stretch to say that the devil, as far as DC is concerned, may have some Indian traits. Or that Raven's home of Azarath, steeped in spiritualism and mysticism and definitely-not-Hinduism, may have had some Indian culture there too? But I feel like all this pedantic behavior is kind of missing the point.
What is the point of representation anyway?
Why does Raven being Indian coded matter?
Well, it matters because if we include her in the Indian coded bucket, there is a total of 4 desi coded characters in DC, three of those 4 being the Al Ghul family. The sum total of all actual canonical Desi characters in both DC and Marvel combined, is one. Just one. Kamala Khan from the Marvel universe.
Representation, specifically changing the ethnicity of pre-existing characters in later adaptations is done to better reflect the audience diaspora, so that the audience can see themselves in those character. Little Desi girls want to believe that they can be superheroes, just like anybody else. And if we don't have that in cannon, we will make it in fannon.
Accuracy be damned.

uh,,, hello It's been a while since I posted anything here, right, nothing more fair than me coming back with a post about my hyperfixation i guess so IT’S DESI!RAVEN TIME! (long post sorry) After all, for Raven have Indian descent it is necessary for at least one of her parents to be, and as her father is a literal four-eyed red intergalactic demon, this role is left for our dear Arella! Congratulations honey!  💘 I've been picturing Arella with a darker skin tone, like people from southern India. Black hair, of course, but much curlier than her daughter's. and blue eyes, like the character has in the comics. I liked this composition that I got here. I tried to give mother and daughter the same gaze. I won't go further that part too much now, but in my HC, Azarath is also a dimension initially formed by a group of desi culture that changed over time, but the bases remain the same (that's why Raven is so familiar with the culture even without having been on earth before meeting the titans), thinking about it, i decided to find a middle ground between arella's headpiece and a matha patti, but in the end it was just a poorly made matha patti because by then i was tired of drawing. I swear that when I make an "official" drawing I'll work on it more
Tumblr media
As for Raven, I wanted to make her skin lighter and paler than her mother's. Lighter cause technically Raven is mixed, the human form Trigon used during her conception was that of a white caucasian male, so it makes sense for her to have lighter skin (or am I making this up?)
Tumblr media
ugly ass bitch And paler because this girl has never seen a ray of sunshine in her life, she stays all day locked in her room meditating. So I put a grayish pallor in a light brown tone (but none of that horrible gray skin from the current cartoon and comics, please, I have good taste) I was going to make her eyes blue like Arella's, but I'm very attached to the lilac-eyed Raven, it suits her so much! Two things the post-TNTT comics gave her that I can't let go of: her eyes and those little horns on her eyebrows. Ok, I think that's all I had to say, this drawing I did just to test the skin tones, so it's not that pretty, but I liked the final result and I enjoyed doing it, I discovered a cool way to paint skin! :) Thoughts? opinions? Claims? You can send! I love reading your comments, I keep going to each blog to see the tags you put in  🤭🤭🤭 And I was very happy to see that some real desi people liked the drawing! Means a lot to me! If I am ever disrespectful, please correct me. I'm just an admirer of the culture and I try to research as much as possible before posting anything, but if I happen to offend someone, let me know. Byee, see y’all in the next six months probaly lol

It makes me so sad that the Titans cast is so good but they're wasted on such on a poorly written/directed show. SIGH
yeah i can tell it’s not good and i’m not gonna waste my time on it but kudos to the casting director they really nailed it

More about Ravens appearance, Are the lines on the ends of her eyes connecting to her eyebrows supposed to be makeup? And would her design be considered offensive today because of the bindi?
there's no canon answer for the lines connecting her eyebrows. George Perez is the only artist who really drew her with them, other artists gave her ordinary eyebrows. Closeup shots of her face tend to show her eyebrows and eyelashes not quite connected, sort of like a very long eyeliner wing reaching up to curved brows.
Tumblr media
Personally, I hc that she just has funky eyebrows and it's not makeup, but just like her earrings, there's no canon answer. Eduardo Barreto, the artist who took over full time after George Perez left, drew her eyebrows completely differently.
Tumblr media
He drew her face as a whole pretty differently, though. I love Barreto's art, but in my opinion he's got a bit of a case of same face syndrome, especially with the female titans. I prefer Perez's Raven.
As for her bindi, I'm white, so I don't really feel qualified to answer on that. A lot of people into NTT Raven nowadays hc her as Desi, me included.
