I haven't seen this, and I probably won't, but I'm really tired of the 'let's show disabled people as psychopaths and murderers and people who constantly destroy stuff.'
I'm also tired of abled actors playing disabled actors when there are disabled actors out there. If you're going to make movies about us being pyschopaths and murders, I can't stop you. But at least hire someone who has the condition the main character has. There are Deaf/HoH actors out there who could have played this role if they really wanted to make the movie.
Abled actors can play disabled or abled roles. Disabled actors can really only play disabled roles. So until that changes, at least cast a Deaf actor in the role.
As a young woman who is both deaf and an amputee, Alaqua Cox would seem to be an unlikely choice to star in a Marvel Cinematic Universe series. But she made a huge impression playing the role of Maya Lopez -- a.k.a. Echo -- on Hawkeye, and she was given a spinoff series, Echo. And her co-star on the show, Vincent D'Onofrio, said she's one of the most incredible actors he's ever worked with.
I really love that Sam’s actor Keivonn Woodard is actually deaf. It’s such a smart inclusion into the story, it works really well (I will protest the fact that the showrunners said “he is dependent on Henry even more” because that’s not entirely true but a younger Sam helps underscore it rather than make it about his deafness).
I also love that in the show, Henry makes sure to include Sam in conversations, like with Ellie and Joel introducing themselves. Yeah he isn’t the best at it in every conversation and he changes what they say, but I feel like that’s about him being an older brother and Sam being a kid rather than just because he’s deaf.
Also in the behind the scenes, the cast and crew worked with interpreters and picked up a lot of ASL so that they could all talk!
update: In listening to the podcast, they do a better job of explaining the decision to make Sam deaf, they’re very respectful about it, so I will forgive what I’m going to say is bad editing on the BTS taking that clip more out of context

Can someone who has the ability to make gifs make a gif of James hamming up blushing by crossing his legs in One Killer Question, and then make another one of Donald O'Connor doing what I am pretty sure is the exact same movement during the Make 'Em Laugh song in Singing in the Rain.
