Dads meeting a smart Dadsona? When I mean smart, I mean he's like the love child of Einstein and Hawking? (Btw, I love your blog!)

Hugo had seen the man before, but not like this. He had seen him on blogs and news channels, magazine covers and in the New York Times. He had seen the man alongside headlines of “Artificial Intelligence Finally Mastered?” and “Step away, Siri. This new AI is for REAL!” The man had created artificial intelligence more realistic than the average human. Or, at least, the teenage ones Hugo dealt with on a daily basis. But here, at a parent teacher conference, the man stood before him with a cheeky grin and these eyes that you could just tell were looking for details. Amanda gave Hugo a knowing look, her arms crossed and her lips pursed. “So, I only have a few concerns with Amanda. Thus far her work has been excellent,” Hugo paused to give the teenage girl his signature ‘but’ look, “When she decides to turn it in. She has been tardy a few times and her phone has proven to be the reason I’ve enforced our no phone rule in my classroom for the first time in five years.” The man nodded and played with his thumbs in his lap, stealing glances at Amanda as she giggled and shrugged along with the conversation. “Amanda,” the man spoke up. “How about you go get the car started. I’ll run everything by you on our way to your appointment.”Hugo watched amazed as Amanda rose from her seat and basically skipped out of the room.“Mister-““Dadsona. Please.”The teacher sighed.“Dadsona. There’s also a small issue with-“ The man cut him off again.“Could I get your number?”Hugo felt flushed. His cheeks went hot and he could feel the heat radiating from his tanned skin.“My… I’m sorry?”“Your number. By the look you gave me when I walked in, you have a decent idea of who I am. However, I don’t think that’s fair. If you know about me, I would like to know a tad more about you.”“I’m really just a teacher, Dadsona.”He gave Hugo a look. One that told him he would be handing over his number whether logic applied or not.“Something tells me you’re much more than that.”Hugo felt a weight on his hand and looked down to find Dadsona’s phone pressed into his palm. He took it with hesitant fingers.

He got a call exactly two hours later and soon enough, he had plans every night for the rest of the week.

Craig: Craig would get all blushy, and he’d love it. He would probably give them a soft cheek peck afterwords and thank them. 

Hugo: Hugo would definitely blush a lot, and tell them they’re attractive as well. He would bring them in for a hug and pet their hair reassuringly.

Mat: Mat would probably in a little shock, and after his shock he’d tear up and bring them into a hug, complimenting them back.

Robert: Robert would snicker, and be sarcastic saying “Well, I guess you’re okay compared to me.” And then after a few seconds he would clear his throat, and he’d follow it up with “Okay, but all jokes aside you’ve got some pretty nice facial features yourself.”

Damien: Damien would blush and smile at them, embracing them and speaking softly into their ears that “You’re perfectly fine the way you are, signif. Whoever you turn out to be, I’ll love you all the same. Can I kiss you?” And give them a light kiss on the cheek.

Headcanon: on Damien and Lucien’s birth certificates their surname is something else, something boring and generic.  When Lucien was already born and Damien changed his legal name from whatever his dead name was to Damien, he just said WHY NOT CHANGE THE WHOLE THING.  Once that was done, he filed for Lucien’s surname to be changed too. 

Sometimes when Lucien was a toddler Damien would lift him over his head and call him LUCIEN BLOODMARCH FIRST OF HIS NAME and now really his dad is so embarrassing (but it’s still pretty cool don’t tell anyone).

Somehow I'm just thinking of Robert as a guy who actually doesn't watch porn and would be oblivious to a lot of kinky sexual references - like, you can call him "daddy" as a sly joke when you're together sometime, and he'd just be like "Yeah? What's up?" If you are quiet because you're wondering if that actually just flew over his head, he'll go on and say, "Are you trying to make me feel better about Val? Because thanks, but...I'm dealing with it." And okay, this guy tried to get in your pants before he learned your name that first time you met and he isn't picking up on sexual jokes??? But no, cmon, if you make fun of something phallic like a hot dog ofc he's gonna giggle like a stupid 14yo - okay, what I'm saying is that he's just a natural when it comes to kink and he doesn't even know it. Bc when he's biting you that other time? Instinctual. When he kisses you like he wants to fuck you right there, right now? Impatience. You giggle again bc maybe you're a little more drunk than you thought at first, and seeing Robert uncomfortable is just so rare and amusing, that you mumble, "You're fucking sexy, Daddy." You feel yourself jolt just a bit - and you straighten up a tad, looking at Robert a little miffed. "Did you almost drop me?" Robert, trying to be the ~mysterious and cool~ man that he is, denies it. You're past the level of tipsy where your attention span is still intact, so you're just staring at his eyes with the wrinkles at the sides and you lean in, forehead to forehead, and mutter, "Kiss me like you did the other day." Robert, back in his territory and really not knowing how kinky he makes you want to get, presses you against the wall and smirks. "Oh yeah? You liked that?" You nod and murmur a yes, and he kisses you to the point where you don't know how to stand anymore. (welp this was written very poorly so sorry I'm cutting it here and also I haven't played any of the routes where you sleep with Robert so this may be highly inaccurate idk but given the good route, this is what I think)

I feel you, friend. ✌ I too am conscious of the fact that just because I'm super-invested in my fic, that doesn't mean everyone else will be too—but there will be some!

Beta readers aren't being “compensated” for editing your fic, but you're not being compensated for writing it either (and nor are the fanartists or the podficcers that follow). This is a labor of love for everyone involved, and you have to trust that beta readers are doing it because they want to.

And I think it's not hard to tell whether or not someone really wants to be beta'ing for you—when they're excited to talk about your fic and the source material for hours on end without getting tired or bored, when they can't get enough of discussing the minutiae of character motivations, or world-building ramifications, or spinning out headcanons. Those are the people I'm comfortable asking a lot from, in terms of beta-reading duties, because we're in this hyperfixation together.

But I am also quick to let people ghost me—when conversation drops off; when they start taking longer to respond to messages; when their comments and responses become more perfunctory, then I stop asking, and start shopping around for new betas.

(Which is why I am still so fucking baffled by the loss of Sasha 1 halfway through For the Asking—because we had been 1000% hyperfixating together, and then they disappeared overnight and I never heard from them again, leaving me genuinely wondering if they died.)

Anyway, if someone doesn't want to beta-read for me, then I don't want to keep them there. (1) Because I don't want to impose on anyone, but also (2) if they're not invested in your fic, then they're not going to be reading/thinking deeply enough to give you much good feedback.

And people's fandom involvement changes, their availability and free time waxes and wanes—even someone who was an amazing beta in the past may drop off your radar. Sasha 2 was the unsung hero behind the second half of For the Asking, but she's since moved on to Legend of Zelda fandom—I don't think she could hyperfixate on witcher shit now even if she tried. It's why she came back for a one-day victory lap to help me with “That Uncertain Season,” but she's not a beta for Song of Selfish Hearts. (Likewise, the beta readers from my ddads fic didn't follow me to Witcher fandom.)

It is true that when you're first starting out, you may have to rely on betas who aren't super-invested in your story—getting a non-fandom friend to give it a quick read for typos and overall coherency, or asking around in a fandom discord to see if any strangers are willing to help. But I've found that the best place to find potential beta readers is in the comments section of your fic—by engaging with the people who are leaving keen, insightful feedback, who clearly enjoy thinking about your story. I've picked up several beta-readers that way, and I have used that trick to get myself invited to beta-read for fics I was in love with.

(“I am going to friend-seduce this author so hard,” I say to myself, evilly, as I sit down to write a comment that will knock their socks off.)

And in case you were wondering what beta-readers are getting out of the bargain:

I love getting analytical about narrative and storytelling. Bam. I'm a fuckin' nerd for it, that's my hobby right there. My fics, other people's fics, the canon, I will dissect the shit out of all of it. Trust me when I say that I am enjoying getting into the nuts and bolts of your story.

I get to read it before it's available to the public. I am still gleeful beyond belief that I got to read the entirety of In the Company of a Glacier (all 265k words of it) in one sitting, since even at coffee_mage's relatively brisk release schedule, the ending is still probably about a year out. (That said: do not be one of those people who volunteers to beta-read but then just fucks off after getting your sneak peek. That is rude, and you won't be invited back.)

I get to influence the development of the story. You ever read a fic that was so good, but fell JUST SHORT of what you wanted it to be? Missing a scene you wanted to see? Just didn't quite deliver the payoff you were hoping for, leaving you with a niggling sense of dissatisfaction? Good news! If you're a beta-reader, you can lean on the author to give you the content you crave. Because often it's just a matter of their vision not quite making it onto the page, or them not being certain that readers will want [whatever], and they will be happy to provide it if you assure them that no, no, we DEFINITELY want it.

Anyway, best of luck finding betas! It’s like making friends, but even easier I think, because you basically just go “hey fellow nerd, would you like to SUPER NERD OUT WITH ME?”

okay, stop me if someone has gone here before, but my headcanon is that crish's name is actually christine hear me out in context, all of joseph's other children very explicitly have 'christ' in their name, which is obviously intentional. it wouldn't make sense to break pattern on the fourth. but, jay, you ask, how do you figure christine? well, it fills the 'christ' requirement and, here's where some headcanoning comes in, i reckon that on the fourth kid mary was taking every pain drug offered as early as offered. post-birth, in her drug induced, tired haze, the poor woman couldn't manage to get 'christine' out of her mouth, instead only managing a noise sounding something akin to 'crish' and, well, it was so funny it stuck

My thoughts on RobertxJoseph; spoilers!

Robert slept with a married man which is fucking gross, but he has his own issues with intimacy and loneliness so I can kind of get it. That doesn’t excuse it, but it may explain WHY he made such a stupid decision. Stained my feelings about Robert though. It adds depth to his character. Robert is self centered and selfish, which even he admits during his third date.

People who say “but Mary is a terrible wife!!!” PLEASE. Marriage is a two way street. You don’t know how they act in private. For all you know, Mary being “rude” to Joseph could be a totally justified reaction. Don’t let your one sided view of their relationship pretend to be the whole picture. To be fair, I’m slightly biased because I love Mary to death.

Joseph is manipulative and kind of terrible, but I have dated guys like that. I get the appeal. You aren’t a bad person for being attracted to him, but he is still a shit guy. Immature and selfish. What he does is abusive. Being drawn to that doesn’t make you a villain, but may make you a potential victim. If you are attracted to this kind of person, me too, please be careful.

Despite all this, drawing RobertxJoseph fanart or writing fics isn’t a bad thing. You aren’t bad for doing so. There is something attractive about a flawed and doomed relationship. Shipping isn’t about picking the most healthy relationship and supporting it. It’s just a creative outlet.

This doesn’t mean that you should excuse what Joseph and Robert did or be shitty to Mary.

If you want to headcanon that Joseph and Mary divorce or that Mary is okay with it, fine. Or even if you want to think that Joseph is totally cheating on Mary, who isn’t okay with it, THATS FINE TOO, but please acknowledge that it’s terrible.

I’ve been cheated on and it isn’t a joke. I don’t know that Mary knows about Robert and Joseph (since she’s still friends with Robert), but who knows.

Being into flawed/evil/terrible characters isn’t terrible. Hannibal is a cool character and he eats people. Joseph is a cool character and he is a cheating manipulative bastard.

I applaud DDADS developers for creating such real and dimensional characters. I think that interacting with the characters shows a lot about the viewer. You can learn about yourself.

For example: I love Robert. I’d totally go for him. I have issues with being a total codependent and wanting to fix broken puppies. I want to make excuses for his behavior because THATS MY FLAW.

I got angry with Joseph when he didn’t leave Mary for me. I felt betrayed…. but I still love Mary. I, like Robert, am selfish. I wanted joseph to leave a wonderful person like Mary so I (Dadsona) could be happy.

All of this is okay, art helps you explore yourself as much as explore the world created for you.

TLDR; RobertxJoseph fandom has nothing to apologize for, but please acknowledge that some (key word: some) of you are terrible to Mary and don’t acknowledge how much of assholes Robert and Joseph are.

Joseph: He would be extremely protective over them, and he would announce the stalker situation to his church so people know to keep an eye out and stay safe. If he encountered the stalker, well... you know the rest.

Craig: Would text them often to see how they’re doing. Invites them to stay with him until the situation is settled, and is prepared to call 911 at all times. Takes them to all of his softball practices and games.

Mat: Invites them over more often, and tells them to visit the coffee shop daily if they can. Installs security cameras at the coffee shop just in case the stalker decides to follow them there. Offers to walk them home every night, and stays the night at their house sometimes.

Hugo: He’ll inform the authorities right away that there’s a stalker by the cul de sac. He will read up on how to ensure safety and make sure that precautions are taken. Might even take them to his classes so he knows that they’re safe. Takes them out to dinner nearly every night, and has them stay over late and walks them back home afterwards.

Brian: Practically grows eyes in the back of his head. Will have his s/o take Maxwell out wherever they go. He would check up on them frequently, and also give them one of his knives and his bear mace from camping to keep in their pockets. Starts to do yard work every day to make sure Daisy is safe too.

Damien: He will walk his s/o everywhere, and even stay the night with them and let them stay the night at his place sometimes. If things get too serious, he'll bring it up to the police right away. If anyone looks suspicious he'll probably shoot them a "back off hoe" look and when they look away he'll go back to normal. He would look after Lucien often as well to be safe.

Robert: Will protect them at all costs. Takes them to the bar whenever he goes and hangs out with them way more often. Considers giving them one (or more) of his knives to carry around until he catches the stalker and takes care of it himself.

Personally I wouldn't try too hard to set in stone orientations of all the guys In DDADS? Because yeah, many gay men had past relationships with women because homophobia but also bi men exist too? And I think they left it purposefully vague so all mlm could relate to them and headcannon freely as the want? The only ones I'm pretty sure are exclusively gay are Craig and Joseph- bc Craig gets visibly uncomfortable when hit on by women and tells you a million excuses to why part 2 coming

part 2 he can’t date anyone right now but is happy to kiss five minutes later and date you soon after that, and for Joseph it’s pretty obvious he only married Mary because of his internalised homophobia/ to be a good Christian and do what God wanted him to do and cheats on her regularly with other men
