He says “hey try this game I've been playing.” I say “Okay!” #I have never heard of this game. I pick the mercenary. I go through 5 min of character history and background. I am mauled to death by dogs #It took me 4 resets to even get in the dungeon. But I finally get there. I am caught by a guard. He cuts off all but one of my limbs #I am forced to crawl around in a blood and corpse pit until the game tells me 'give up idiot'. #I reset. I am mauled by dogs again. I realize this is not for me but I am intrigued enough to go home and watch some playthroughs #And WOW what an interesting game it is! I really do appreciate games that blend their design philosophy with the theme it wants to set #This is a game about fear and hunger. And persevering. And penis (my god is there a lot of penis) #I recommend this to people who like extremely challenging games and can handle the many *content warnings* within this series #If the idea of Bloodborne/eldenring and undertale having a little RPG maker baby sounds appealing to you - give it a shot #It's made by ONE GUY and it's a great horror game. I am just really bad at it. #My friends just enjoy putting me in situations where I scream and yell. We don't talk about the corn mazes. tbh found family loses all the juice the moment u decide to squeeze all the characters into boring nuclear boxes. “such and such is the dad” “so and so is the mom” “this and that is the oldest daughter” ok well who’s the grieving child who raises a grieving man in his own image, who becomes a symbol of joy and loss in the same name, who loses everything again and rebuilds himself taller and stronger and wiser, who loves the grieving man more than anyone else despite how being near him cuts his hands to bloody scars, who must fly higher, fall faster, outpace death itself so he might never miss another catch, huh

So, we have a family of priests. All women, the men who marry into the family die tragically, but not before the next generation is born. They all share a single zanpakuto across generations, primarily used in the religious ceremonies that they presumably serve as the officiants for. But the true power of the sword is seemingly irreligious-- it's the power to confront, and disperse the power, of God.

It's a real chicken-and-the-egg problem here. Which came first? The priest sacrificing her individuality and happiness, and that of her descendants for all time to come, in exchange for the power to defeat God? Or the power, drawing a curse upon itself from the very deity it defeated?

(and if the latter...might the time have come where such a curse no longer has its force?)

A character's motivation should not be a mystery. Their backstory can be a mystery. The depths of their character can be a mystery. But not motivation. If you want us to care, we should know why they're doing what they're doing; we should understand why success is so important to them.

A villain can be a different case. Sometimes, the only motivation you need to know about is "They're evil" or "They work for the bad guys." But if the feud is personal, we should see what makes it personal. Holding the "why" back as a thrilling reveal is almost never as effective as just letting us know from the beginning.

A plot twist gives you one cool moment. Character attachment makes the entire story interesting.

#adventures in writing #yes this is about the kenobi miniseries #half of the twist was the obvious thing from the beginning #i'll admit the other half of it was kind of a cool reveal #but how much more interesting would it have been to know at least some of this from the beginning? #it could have given us a little investment in her instead of her feeling like some interloper #who's keeping us from the kenobi-vader confrontation we all care about #she wasn't even necessary #because you have the very personal feud between vader and kenobi #obi-wan mourns anakin's fall and anakin's angry that obi-wan cut off his limbs and left him to burn to death #that's compelling! #you don't need another villain to get in the way of that #but even if she's needed to keep vader and kenobi from meeting too soon #they could have structured things to give us an attachment to her #or at least an understanding #right from the beginning #imagine if we'd seen her as a youngling in that very first scene #and then cut straight to her as a grown-up hunting jedi #immediately your intellectual and emotional investment are increased #how did she go from the victim to the villain? #what's her story? #it even still allows for the twist reveal but in a way that let us understand at least part of her a bit more #perhaps even have vader treat her like an apprentice #to be a dark parallel to the anakin-kenobi relationship #so it looks like the personal obsession with kenobi is just her trying to please her master #until she goes the way of all sith and tries to overcome her master #there were better ways to go about this #which holds true for just about everything star wars tbf #but sometimes their seeming unconcern with good story structure is baffling

When Carlos finally picks up the phone, TK greets him with a casual, “Hey.” He thinks to himself that his greeting is the most casual thing he’s done with Carlos in weeks. “How’s your day going?” He can hear the rumbling sounds of a train station in the background of Carlos’ line.

“I’ve kind of been dealing with the morning from hell but talking to you is already making it feel a bit more like heaven.” As Carlos speaks, the rumbling sounds become more distant and muted. 

“That’s poetic,” TK’s voice sounds both bright and dreamy. As if he’s caught off guard by Carlos’ words, but is happy to hear them, regardless. “Have you been rummaging through my Frank O’Hara collection again?” 

Carlos smiles to himself and revels in his own self attributed victory. “Did you like that?” 

TK can hear Carlos' smile through the line. He grins and says, “I loved it.”
