thinking about how cursed objects work in most fantasy RPGs.
typically, they wind up just kind of being a big middle finger from the game master - a kind of "whelp, you should have been more paranoid, so now you get hosed" sort of deal. which includes the somewhat game-y trope of objects that you can't get rid of. it's kind of an un-fun mechanic, when you think about it, which is why in most games I've been a part of cursed items often don't see much play, unless it's as a "punishment", or part of a story arc.
...which naturally leads me to think about how to do it better. in the past, I've tried using a curse as a kind of limiter. restrictions or drawbacks to a mostly functional item that is still worth using despite being "cursed". that's good, but it doesn't let you draw on truly nasty curses, because the item needs to be worth using, but also still needs to be balanced.
so, I'm drawing from a lot of sources here, like the cursed shield in Final Fantasy VI, and especially the comics by @foldingfittedsheets, where curses exist to (literally) teach the recipient a lesson
MEAT OF THE POST STARTS HERE:
what about cursed items that have a way to overcome their curse?
it's actually a fairly common trope in classical literature / fairy tales. every curse has a way to be broken. yet in D&D and Pathfinder, most often the only way to break a curse is to find someone with the specific curse-breaking spell.
so, give each cursed item a condition. perhaps a weapon that fuels a person's rage and causes them to fly into a blind rage in battle waits for them to sincerely forgive a hated enemy. perhaps boots that slow the wearer are actually making them heavy with the weight of past transgressions and a sufficient act of atonement will free them. maybe the perpetually bloody doll that gives its bearer horrible nightmares simply waits for someone to be motivated to action by them, either to right some past wrong, or generally bring a certain number of murderers to proper justice.
...maybe a Bag of Devouring. which is technically actually a creature, not a cursed item (but usually classified with them), can be befriended by figuring out a treat it likes, and will not only carry things for the player if fed and cared for, but even cough up a few things that previous bearers had stuffed inside.
the specifics aren't too important, but the idea is that any item with a curse on it has a reason for that curse, and a way to break it. the players can drop the item at any time, sell it off, give it to someone they hate, whatever, but if they put in the time and energy to actually breaking the curse, it becomes better than it was before, sometimes simply losing a drawback, or sometimes gaining new powers.
for an example, let's look at how that doll idea from earlier could work in D&D 5e;
while the party has the doll in their possession, they will all be afflicted by horrible nightmares, seeing themselves as children being attacked by a group of eight bandits with indistinct features. the details of the dreams change each night, and the players awaken before learning their ultimate fate, but the general gist is always that they are completely helpless, and subjected to harm.
after a long rest, have them roll a Wisdom or Charisma save (challenging DC, but not too difficult), or take a small amount of psychic damage.
if the players bring murderers to justice - meaning deliver them to the proper authorities and see them punished for their crimes - the content of the dreams starts to change. one bandit gets caught or killed by the end of the dream for each real world criminal successfully punished, possibly hinting to the players what they need to do. once eight murderers in total have had their sentences enacted, the next morning the doll will be in pristine condition with a serene expression, emitting a faint glow. thereafter, any player may attune to the doll to gain the ability to cast the Guidance cantrip without components (as thought the doll's ability to project what it wants the players to do into their mind was turned to their benefit.

SCP Items: Batch 2
Surprise! Have some more SCP items! I was taking the month off after feeling burnt out, but I had an itch to work on some more of these toward the end. And I gotta say, this was a really fun batch to work on and was a nice change of pace from my other big project I'm working on. There's some WILD items in here and some real cursed nonsense, but that's why I love them so much. Anyway, hope y'all have fun with these, I know I did.

[The following was recovered from the heavily damaged pages of a small book you found in a rats nest. It is no larger than a single finger but some text can be gleamed with the help of a magnifying glass.]
On your travels you may happen upon an array of magical and wonderous objects that can either benefit you or be your downfall.
I am of course referring to enchanted objects. Trinkets of various shapes and sizes baring a magical effect that can either give you that much needed leg up in an encounter or be the bane that leads to the ruin of yourself and others.
In this section we will mostly be discussing cursed items. Though I am hesitant to label these under such a blanket term as there are many such creations likely made with the best intentions. While a ring that manifests a beard upon one's barren face might be seen as a curse to some, there are others who might delight in such a thing. But, seeing as caution is to be taken in all aspects of handling these materials, calling them cursed seems the only way to properly stress the importance of caution when dealing with these items.
Catalouging every single item this grand world has would be an impossible task and this document will not waste its time with such delusional tasks. In this document, I will focus solely on those objects in my collection that I have found during my expeditions for the sake of maintaining as much focus and clarity. If the item or items you're seeking are not mentioned here, there are a myriad of other books detailing more and more items.
Here are a few examples:
Item #17.
Appearence: A silver ring fitting a medium sized humanoid. The outer surface is scuffed and scratched. Faded lettering can be seen on the side reading 'Reduce' while the lettering on the opposite side is too scratched to make out. It feels constantly cold to the touch.
Effect:
The ring, when worn, casts the spell 'Reduce person' whenever the word 'Reduce' is spoken within earshot of the wearer. The spell does not seem to decrease in effectiveness or even fizzle out regardless of the wearer already being under the effects of the Reduce person spell. It seemingly just shrinks the person further and further with each utterance.
My theory is that this ring was a handy gadget made to change size at will, perhaps made by a wizard who often consorted with fairies or a spelunker looking for an easy means of exploring minuscule crevices. The faded lettering was likely the phrase needed to revert the size back to the wearers normal height.
Furthermore, the ring seems to be enchanted to remain affixed to a finger if it has reduced the wearer. Likely as a means of preventing the wearer from losing their one means of resizing back to normal.
Unfortunately, testing has yet to reveal what the phrase to revert back is. It certainly isn't revert or reverse or 'turn back please'. Also, testing has been severely hampered due to my apprentices lack of drive. When I ask her to try out more words, all the unruly dwarf does is demand I find some other cure or seek some means of dispelling it or whine about already being less than an inch tall and being afraid of becoming even smaller. I swear, it is hard to find proper academic help in the field of magical item study these days.
Item #42.
Appearence: A golden girdle that fits around the waist of most medium sized humanoids. Streaks of emerald line the sides and a large, multi colored jewel adorns the buckle. It is described to feel heavy at first but seems to become lighter as the wearer continues its use.
Effect:
This curious belt seems to be intrinsically tied to the wearers self confidence. It appears to increase the size of the wearer in tandem with their ego.
Now, many may seem various uses for this belt. Thoughts of adorning your fighter or paladin with this girdle and watching them turn fights into trivial bouts of stomping annoyances are likely flaring up in many minds. But keep in mind, this is a document on cursed items.
While it sounds simple in use, and was likely intended to be simple in use, it is anything but. It seems to also magnify the effect of your environment on your ego. Furthermore, it unfortunately works in reverse as well. The more diminished ones self esteem becomes, the more diminished your size will be.
This seems to create a sort of feedback loop. Upon testing we observed our intern go from a strapping, tall tiefling to barely half the height of a gnome before he managed to tear the belt off. Even after restoring his height he seems to have retained a nervous stutter.
Such an unusual property of course warranted more studies on the girdle. Another of my apprentices, and dare I say one of my star pupils, the cream of the crop, a shining jewel among an array of shiny rocks, has shown a keen interest in taking part in further studies. My other students have told me scathing lies about how the elf has been joking about allowing them to serve at his feet when he becomes a god but clearly these are just jokes.
It is a shame to see how jealousy can fuel such unwarranted lies to my star pupil, but understandable. The magic item study field is a vicious one and only the best rise to the top...as with yours truly.
Item #116.
Appearence: a necklace made of gold with a purple amethyst in the pendant. The chain hangs very loose around the neck.
Effect:
The spell tied to this pendant activates every time the wearer speaks. The effect is almost unnoticeable at first but after a few minutes of speaking they become visible. With every word spoken, a portion of the wearers height is reduced. An estimated 2 hours of constant blabbering is enough to reduce an medium humanoids height by roughly half, depending on the original height.
It is likely that the amulet detracts a fixed amount of height as testing showed that shrinking was not proportional. Furthermore, the length of the spoken word does not seem to matter to the amulet.
As a teacher, I can guess as to how such a device was used. I can see several uses for it with my apprentices. While speaking is quite important to a wizard, What with the various verbal components spells need, listening is far more important to students of wizardry!
Unfortunately, my dreams of reproducing this useful trinket remain unfulfilled as one of my apprentices forgot to remove it during the long term wear testing. It seems that young human had a habit of talking in his sleep which apparently counts for the amulet. He has yet to be found but I have taken effort to mount a search. A group of fairies could be swayed to seek them out, their far smaller forms stand a greater chance of spotting my wayward student. I hope sincerely that their search bears fruit as I don't know how I'll ever manage to find another such amulet.
I can't hope to recreate the effects without it!
Regrettably, I must end this document here. Not for a lack of items to catalogue, but due to a shortage of staff. Rest assured, more items will be chronicled as soon as I can recruit a fresh batch of apprentices to research them.
It is too hard to find good students these days. It's almost like today's youth doesn't want to test potentially dangerous magical items for the benefit of academia.
Until then, this has been Arch Wizard Theodoro Grotmorton, head of the institute of magical trinkets and baubles.

Best beginner tarot deck?
Hello Anon, thank you for the ask. I don't personally recommend any specific decks for beginners vs intermediate vs expert readers. Similar to how dogs or cats tend to "pick" their owners, not so much the owners pick them (if they do, it just doesn't work out as good honestly). Some signs of a deck being good or compatible with you include:
A sensation of a "shock" going through your arm
Warmth in your hand when holding the deck
Pulsating sensation comes from the card
When giving readings for yourself, you get more objective honest readings, even if you may not want to hear something
I was told however it's possible to buy a deck of cards that are corrupt or have malevolent entities attached to them. Certain decks strangely enough tend to attract malevolent entities moreso than others (ex. the famous and most commonly known Rider-Waite). Others such as the Tarot Nova like I have and the Nefertari Tarot tend to "make demons roll their eyes". Some signs of a deck being corrupt include:
Confusing or inconsistency between readings
Readings that seemingly "tell" the reader only good things about themselves (if giving a reading to oneself)
The readings end up giving generic meanings that could essentially "apply" to any situation
When holding the cards, they may give off a strange "vibrating" sensation (nothing like what I described in the above)
I hope the sensations tidbits for good cards vs bad cards helps. It may not always be practical to buy cards from a local store. Curiously, deities, faye, khala members, and other benevolent beings actually tend to want you to buy either the second or third tarot deck, pendulum, etc. that catches your eye. Demons tend to try making you buy the first one you see. I thought this was interesting because many sites and people say buy the FIRST one that catches your eye, even though the beings that people often want to communicate with them are benevolent. Scary stuff knowing how people believe things work out one way but they work out another because no one's really actually asked their guides these things.
Thanks for the ask Anon! I hope this helps you and anyone else who sees this...

Relic: The Vampire's Bounty
Tumblr media
Wielding this scythe you are forced to enfuse it with your blood, which it will then give to your crops - crops harvested this way won't expire, will give significantly more strength and energy, and even extend your life. However, the wounds this relic inflicts will not heal, and it's wielder will always die painfully soon after use. It was found in a remote village who's residents had been choosing a wielder to sacrifice every few years, based on how good their actions and reputation were within the community, considering it an enourmous honour and always throwing a festival in their name afterwards.
Thiis is my first drawing for #Cursedrelics2023 😁😁😁 I'm really happy to have found such a cool challenge that I'l actually be able to complete (unlike Goretober which I've tried and failed at the past few years). Excited to do more but I have soso many October arts I also wanna do 😔 Idk howww in depth I'll make any of the descriptions but it's a fun exercise
