Cowboy James au 🤠
1012 words 🙈
This will be a multi-part :)
~
"Now, I demand that—"
"Whoa there, fancy-pants, what seems t’ be the trouble?" James drawled, placing a hand on the fuming man's chest. He was small, slight, with a head of perfect dark curls and silver eyes, and he shot James a withering look.
"This doesn't concern you." The man snapped, eyeing James before returning to the bartender. "I swear to god, if you don't give it right now, I will knock your fucking lights out—"
"Okay, okay." James intervened again, despite the man's dismissal. Or maybe because of it.
"Now, th’rs no need t’ talk t’ mah friend like that."
The smaller man glared at him.
"Your friend just so happens to be my brother. Who has taken away my fucking phone, because he's a dick." The man spat, directing a glare towards Sirius.
"Well, tha’s not very nice." James admonished, giving him a little pout.
"And who exactly are you?" The man asked James, turning to properly face him, an expression of annoyance and disdain on his face. Here, Sirius cut in.
"Regulus, this is James. My friend. James, this is Regulus, my menace of a little brother." Sirius introduced.
"Regulus." James repeated, grinning, and stuck out a hand. "Lovely t’ meet ya."
"Can't say the same for you, given you're so nosy." Regulus sniffed, but shook his hand anyway. James squeezed his hand a little, then let go.
"Well, since ah’m so nosy, ah’m gonna ask why exactly Sirius took your phone. Cuz ah gotta feelin' he might have a good reason." Regulus opened his mouth to protest, but Sirius cut him off.
"He won't stop texting an arsehole who broke his heart and stole his job." James's eyebrows raised.
"Well that just won' do." He frowned, looking down at Regulus. "Why're you still textin' ‘im ?"
Regulus looked, for just a moment, vulnerable. Then, he put his chin up, and a mask with it.
"He has a really big cock." He replied, granting James and Sirius a sharp, self-satisfied grin. Sirius rolled his eyes, and James laughed.
"Good to know whatcha like, sugar." James murmured, and Regulus's eyes widened minutely. Sirius, luckily, had been distracted by another customer, and hadn't heard James's remark.
~
James had left the bar only a few minutes after they'd met, needing to help out a friend with something. He promised he'd be back later, and Regulus was anticipating it more than he'd like.
"How come you didn't tell me you'd befriended a tall, smooth, hot-as-fuck cowboy??" Regulus asked Sirius, tone incredulous and annoyed.
"Because I knew you'd jump him, and I didn't want him to be your rebound." Sirius answered, giving him a pointed look.
"Oh, please." Regulus scoffed, downing his shot. "That man doesn't seem like he'd be at all phased by a little rebound." Sirius frowned at him.
"He may seem like a confident, smooth-talking cowboy, but he's also quite kind. Considerate. I don't want you breaking him." Sirius answered, and Regulus scowled.
"In case you don't recall, my last relationship ended with me breaking down sobbing in your arms and sleeping on your couch for a month." Regulus said pointedly.
"I do, thank you. But I also remember how you ended it with Will, who was really decent. Bloke texted me for  weeks asking why you'd done it like that. You fucked him up, Reg."
"He's fine. His fragile masculinity will survive." Regulus waved it off, playing with his glass. "But come on, Sirius, did you see James?? He's exactly my type. I mean, the curls, the eyes, and, lord, those thighs in tight fucking jeans? Send me straight to hell because I. Want. To. Sin." Regulus groaned, pleading to Sirius.
"No." His brother replied shortly, before going to tend to another customer.
*
It was only two hours later when James returned to the bar, but now the place was bustling, as it was 8:30. Music was booming throughout the place, full of happily buzzed people dancing around and on one another. Regulus was sat at the bar, glowering at his phone still in Sirius's back pocket. He didn't even care about Barty anymore, he was just bored. Or so he told himself.
"Hey there, fancy-pants." A voice rumbled in his ear, and Regulus startled. Then, he turned, meeting warm hazel eyes.
"Well hello, nosy." Regulus replied, fondly. He was pleasantly tipsy, just on the edge of drunk, his usual wall-like inhibitions lowered. James flashed him a pleased smile.
"Sirius still got your phone?" James asked, glancing at the busy bartender.
"Yes, the cunt." Regulus groused, his tongue also even sharper when he was tipsy.
"Y'know, fer such a pretty thing, y’ve got a filthy mouth." James commented, but it wasn't an admonishment. A wicked smile played his lips as he said it.
"Yeah? Well, what are you going to do about it, Mr. Morality?" Regular sneered, taking another sip of his drink.
"Ah’m gonna ask you to dance, sugar." James replied, and a pleasant shiver went through Regulus's body at the nickname.
"Sorry, but I don't dance." Regulus hummed, partly to make it harder for the man and partly because he really wasn't too confident in his dance moves.
"Mmm, ah think you do. Jus' has to be with the right person." James smirked. Regulus gave him an amused look.
"And you think that's you, do you?" He asked, swirling his drink around his glass.
“Ah think that you really want that phone back, and if y’ dance with me, I’ll get it for you." James rumbled, and Regulus's eyebrows raised.
"Is that so?"
"Yes sir." James grinned, and Regulus shivered again.
"How will you get it?" He asked, wondering how far he could push this man.
"D'you see him? His attention's on nothin' but the customer's drinks. Ah could easily tell him ah’m slippin' out, pat him on the back, and swipe your phone. He prob'ly wouldn't even hear me." James drawled, and Regulus looked at him contemplatively.
"Okay." He sighed, pulling himself away from the bar. "I'll dance with you."

(9/1) prompt: school — 963 words (uni/college au; mentioned sexual content) @jegulus-microfic
Regulus has been in the library for all of twenty minutes when his two best friends find him. Barty drops down in the seat beside him, Evan taking up one of the chairs across the table, but Regulus doesn’t look up. He’s busy reorganizing his lecture notes into a proper study guide, he doesn’t have time for whatever they’ve turned up for.
Of course, that does nothing to stop them from being a nuisance anyway.
“Did you hear about the big start of semester bash that’s happening tonight?” Barty asks, spinning one of Regulus’ highlighters obnoxiously on the table in front of him.
Regulus smacks his hand down on it when his eye twitches. “Heard about it. Don’t care.”
There’s a beat of silence and a quick glance upward tells him that the two idiots he’s associated himself with are exchanging a look, all lifted brows and dangerous smirks.
“What?” Regulus snaps.
“Your brother’s hosting,” Evan notes casually.
Barty leans uncomfortably close, draping an arm over his shoulders. “With Potter.”
It’s a test of his poker face, one that Regulus manages to pass this time as he continues writing and only offers a noncommittal hum in response.
“Nothing?” Barty jerks back abruptly. Regulus hopes he falls off his chair.
“We know he’s screaming on the inside,” Evan snickers, taunting.
Regulus drags his tongue along the inside of his cheek for a moment, eyes down. “Actually, unlike some people, I care about school.”
“We’re only three days into the semester, get over yourself,” Barty replies.
Rolling his eyes, Regulus finishes his current bullet point before setting down his pen and leaning back in his chair, arms folding across his chest.
“So what’s your angle this time? Run around the party gathering bets on how many drinks until he and I disappear for the night?” Regulus glances between them both.
“It’s worked well enough before.” Evan shrugs.
“I hate you.” Regulus sneers when Evan only shrugs a second time, looking smug.
Barty laughs, knocking a fist a touch too hard against his shoulder. “It’s not our fault you two are so fucking predictable with each other.”
It’s unfortunately not even a far off assessment, and Regulus hates it even more that Barty’s right.
They’ve got this dance they do around one another down to a perfect routine, him and James. It started nearly a year ago, a Halloween party instead of a back to school one. James had looked entirely too fucking good in his stupid excuse for a costume —a cowboy in denim cut-offs and a tasseled vest without a shirt underneath, so much of his glorious tan skin on display for Regulus to marvel at.
Four drinks into the night and James’ black cowboy hat was dangling off the back of his neck from its string, his head thrown back while Regulus was on his knees with his mouth working eagerly around James’ cock.
It’s been a cycle of similar instances since.
Regulus isn’t stupid, he knows their larger group of friends are aware that they’ve been hooking up, tiptoeing around anything more than all the sex they’ve been having in the last year. It’s his own best friends that have made a fucking game out of it, though. Because they’re rotten and aggravating and want Regulus to murder them one day, he’s convinced.
“Well, too bad for the two of you that I won’t be going.” Regulus sniffs, picking his pen back up.
Because the universe is clearly working against him, it’s at that precise moment that Regulus’ phone buzzes on the table, a photo of James half-asleep and grinning lazily at him in bed taking over the screen.
Barty positively cackles when he notices, much too loud for the library. Regulus swats him on the back of his head when he passes by to exit temporarily. His things are left behind with his friends as he hurries out the library’s front doors, answering his phone the second he’s outside.
Immediately upon the phone being pressed to his ear, James asks, “Are you coming tonight?”
There’s an insinuating joke that Regulus could easily make, but he scowls to himself when he realizes how much like his brother it would be to do so.
“Wasn’t planning on it,” He mutters.
“Had a feeling you’d say that,” James replies, chuckling. A brief pause follows, the lift of Regulus’ brows going unseen. “What if I told you I’d make it worth your while?”
“That’s sort of the issue, isn’t it?” Regulus snorts.
“You didn’t think it was an issue when we were fucking around half the summer before school,” James counters.
Regulus’ nose wrinkles faintly and he looks down as he scuffs the toe of his shoe along the cement. “Barty and Evan are planning to collect bets again.”
“What else is new?”
He can practically see the carefree shrug of James’ shoulders as if he’s standing in front of him.
“I can fuck you this time instead, is that a good enough reason?” James offers, only half-joking. And it’s… tempting, Regulus can’t deny that, but he doesn’t say so. When he stays quiet, James lets out a heavy sigh. “Come on, please? I want to see you, Reg.”
Somehow that’s what does it.
A sickening swoop in his stomach, a stutter and skip of his heart in his chest. God fucking damn it, he really is predictable, so deep in whatever this is. Regulus rubs his free hand over his mouth like it might wipe away the smile threatening to appear. Taking in a deep breath, he finally relents with a quick ‘fine.’
James clearly pulls his phone away from his face to let out an enthusiastic ‘yes!’ but Regulus still hears it distantly, shaking his head, lips curling upward as his smile wins.

All the artwork I made for the fanfic Crazy Ex-Boyfriend by @amethystheart2421 for this year's @rsbigbang!
It was a wild run, we got paired up quite late due to our original pairs dropping out of the Bang, and even though it was already December and time was running thin, I decided to make this whole deal a way bigger challenge than it supposed to be... So I ended up drawing all 7 fantasy sequences, trying to mimic a different style for all of them, and finishing both versions of the banners I had in mind. I know, I know, but I swear even I wasn't aware that I am such an overachiever either!
Also, I usually like to hide little details as easter eggs on all of my artwork, so naturally this was the case with these too. I'm gonna list them one by one, also share a little story about each piece, sort of like a "directors cut werk", just so we stick to the screenplay motif. The numbers in brackets lists the order in which I drew the pictures.
The banners (1.,9.): I haven't watched Crazy Ex-Girlfriend the show, so I really had no idea about this whole thing, hence my initial idea of re-drawing one of the official promo posters of the show as the banner. But then Nicole shared the first scene with me when we got paired up, and also told me that her original artist wanted to draw the stargazing scene, which I also really liked. I sketched out both versions to see which one would look better, and also to warm up a bit for this version of the characters. (Nicole also shared some faceclaims, so except Sirius' and Lily's design, I tried to stick to her vision as much as I could.) The Netflix poster was considered the final one for quite a while. The stargazing banner was the last piece of artwork I finished, which I also edited to be used as Chapter dividers. I liked the idea so much I actually referenced the starry sky on the other pictures too. On the Netflix banner, Remus' socks and Sirius' suit handkerchief (how do you call those things in English, gahh) both have the starry pattern.
The western (3.): By this time it was decided that I'd do all fantasy sequences in a different art style, but I couldn't really come up with any specific style which could have fit the western vibes, so the characters are drawn in my own usual style, only the colouring is different. I tried to go for a sepia effect, without using a filter, I think I could pull it off well enough. I was considering to draw Sirius as a Native American for this, because I just don't see him as Caucasian in general, and also, Black Dog sounds like a badly translated indigenous name... But I discarded this idea for the sake of "historical accuracy" (and to save time, haha), as I think they wouldn't visit a saloon this way. I added the starry sky pattern to Sirius' handkerchief and... scarf? (I really should learn how certain textil items are called in English...) There is a wanted poster in the background with Voldy. And I swear I didn't mean to draw Remus looking this horny, it just kinda happened by accident! He is sure VERY fascinated by Sirius'... pistol.😜
The Star Trek (6.): My original idea was to draw like usual and just add so many lensflares to the picture that it's not visible if I copied another style or not. But in the meantime I started to watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds with my bf and also found out that there is a new cartoon too, so it was then settled. This style is very different from my own, but it was so much fun! It was weird not to draw every single strand of hair in excruciating detail, actually that was the hardest part, haha! I struggled a bit with the placement of the lensflares too, the first version had too many and too bright, it had a disco vibe rather than a spaceship. I wanted to add easter eggs to the background screen, but I was running out of time, so there's only one light blue star similar on the screen! Also now I know that the uniform colors are not really consistent in Star Trek, and Remus’ might have had to be gold as Captain…🤷🏻‍♀️
The Disney (2.): This one sparked the first idea in my head after I read all fantasy scenes Nicole kindly shared with me. When I first sketched this, I still had no idea that I will end up drawing for every chapter and the style copying was not settled either. It started with this piece, I had the vision of the wolf chasing scene from Beauty and the Beast, and we were discussing whether it's plausible to collect berries during the winter or not... I've tried to make the final piece look as classic Disney as I can, and since I could pull it off, it was not a question anymore whether I'd try to do this with other styles for the other scenes. Retrospectively, this one was the easiest to make, apparently my usual style is not that far from Disney (I grew up watching those movies, so it's not a surprise), but I had to really focus on drawing the animals, it's been ages since I last drew any! (The trick is to give them eyebrows, and bam, it's Disney style!) Sirius' armour, clothes and sword has the star, and I also designed his own "crest" with the black dog and a star on his shoulder plate. The whole concept of the picture is Sirius' side being very bright coloured, while Remus' with the scary wolves in the background being very dark. This might have worked better if it was not set in the winter, but I wanted to stick to the Beauty and the Beast vision I had.
The Comicbook (4.): I was very excited for this one, I really like the looks of the old Batman the animated series, and the way some of his comics are drawn. It's such a unique style, I really like the simple shapes and bold contrasts. Well, it turned out I am very bad at this! I struggled quite a bit trying to capture what I had in mind, but I couldn't even come close to it... So I kinda cheated a bit because I just traced the lineart directly from the reference pictures of Batman comic books I found online. I tried to make Remus less buff, but it looked very weird, so I let him keep his muscular Batman body instead. I drew the wolf mask and the whole Sirius panel, and the coloring went smoothly after I finalized the lineart, even though I only realized that I switched the colour schemes of Remus' superhero outfit when I looked up the quotes for the comic panels, oops. Overall I like how it looks, but I am not that proud of it as I had to "cheat".
The Hobbit (5.): I've probably spent the most time with this one! I actually really like Martin Freeman as an older Remus FC, so I was quite excited to do this piece. My original idea was to mimic John Howe's style, as he is the Tolkien illustrator god, but his level of skill and mine are very very far from each other... and as I struggled a lot with the Batman piece, I felt like going for a smaller challenge. That's why I decided to have a go at Alphonse Mucha's art nouveau style. Turned out it was the worst possible idea! 🤣 The whole point of art nouveau is depicting attractive ladies in an ethereal way... But if you switch the ladies with a fat hobbit, the vibe def won't be the same! The first version just looks so extremely absurd, it's both awful and hilarious. By the time I could fix the pose so it wouldn't look as ridiculous, the final style looked nothing like art nouveau... I still have no idea what style it is now, not my own or any of the ones I tried to capture, that's for sure. I considered adding the star pattern to that tablecloth, but I decided that the lupin flowers in the foreground and the whomping willow-like tree are enough reference for this pic! I like how it turned out in the end tho, I think I could do justice for the watercolor-looking coloring technique, and the end result looks a bit like a fancier version of old children's book illustrations... Which is essentially what The Hobbit is, so it all sorted itself out by the end.
The Anime (7.): I like anime (I'm a little picky about them tho), so it was not a question that I would give this style a try! I am a huge fan of cyberpunk (the genre), so initially wanted to do that, I'm such a slut for Ghost in the Shell and I really like the aesthetics of the Akira posters, but after reading the actual scene, it was not really fitting. So I saved the cyberpunk AU for later, and went for the post-apocalyptic vibe instead. Obviously anime had a great influence on my art style, so similar to the Disney one, it was not that much of a challenge to mimic it. However I'm not that good at drawing backgrounds, and oh boy, I really made myself get over this obstacle with this series of pictures! Also as I was more comfortable with this piece, I actually added the starry sky pattern from the beginning to the scarf/blanket Remus has on this picture!
The Sitcom (8.): The original idea was to copy Hanna Barbera's old family cartoons' style, but as my deadline was very close and after reading the scene I realized that it will have a shitton of characters, I quickly abandoned my original plan. So this one is drawn in my own style, sort of, the designs of the characters are more aligned with Nicole's vision (sans Sirius, Lily, and partly Peter). The hardest part was definitely to figure out how I could fit 10 characters into one picture, let alone sitting in a living room! Also, I had to actually draw the living room too, considering perspective and scaling... Something I am not that good at. In the end the coffee table is maybe a little too big, but I needed that to hide the legs of the characters sitting on the sofa, haha! Also, the sofa is the Millennial Dark Green Velvet Sofa, because I also want to have one and it really emphasizes the general existential dread! (Just kidding.) Also also, I just realized that I have no idea how to eat tacos without making a mess (they are not that popular where I live). I added the starry sky pattern to Sirius' shirt, and gave a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles T-shirt to Peter, as he is talking about that in the scene. I wanted to squeeze in further references to the newspaper Remus is holding, but it was too tiny. The star from Knight Sirius' armour is in the background on the bookshelf. Also that globe just makes no sense but I had no better idea how to fill the empty space 😅. Molly is holding a mug with "BEST MOM" written on it, and I intentionally made Marlene's eye colour the same as Remus', who btw should have worn a bathrobe according to the original scene, but it was too late to fix that by the time I realized it. All in all, I am quite satisfied with how it turned out, it has the necessary sitcom vibes. And it is kinda a record for me in terms of number of characters drawn (the most was 12, but that one has no background, so I'd call it a tie!)!! I am very proud of myself for pulling this piece off, it really is the achievement of the year!
TLDR; (I mean really, my rambling is just too long!) I am happy that I was paired up with Nicole, working with her was such a creative process! My absolute favourite thing to do is work on AUs, and she has provided me with the opportunity to do so, I am grateful! It was truly a pleasure to participate in this (even if it's not that clear from all the complaining I just had above, haha)! If you ask me nicely I might show you the cursed first version of the hobbit picture!

Cowboy James 🤠
First part Previous part
~
“Wanna kiss ev’ry inch of you, gonna map out your skin with my lips, ‘m gonna have you committed to memory, baby, I—”
“Regulus Black where the fuck is my lipstick??” James’s sappy rambling was cut off by a rather loud Dorcas, who proceeded to slam the door open.
“Because I know you took it you little— oh… hello.” Dorcas cut herself off this time, as she took in a very naked James next to a similarly naked Regulus. Luckily, the sheet was covering their bottom halves, though in James’s case it was only just.
“Howdy.” James replied with a grin, grabbing his hat off the nightstand and tipping it.
“Are who are you?” Dorcas asked, now smirking at a rather proud Regulus. I mean, who would be embarrassed to have that in their bed?
“I’m James, lovely t’ meet you.” James answered, and made to get out from under the covers to shake her hand.
“Ah, no!” The very lesbian Dorcas stopped him abruptly. “You do not need to get up, thank you very much. You can shake my hand later… after you’ve washed yours.” She added, sending a pointed look at the both of them. James chuckled.
“Alright then. An’ might ah ask who you ‘re?”
“I’m Dorcas. Regulus’s best friend and roommate.” She replied, arms crossed firmly over her chest.
“You didn’ tell me y’ had a roommate.” James murmured, and Regulus scoffed.
“I most certainly did, and there’s two of them. You didn’t hear because you were too busy…” Regulus trailed off with a wary look at Dorcas, who rolled her eyes.
“You two can discuss that later. James, I have only one thing to tell you,” she stated, and James directed his full attention to her. “Treat him right, because his group of friends —myself included— are both not afraid of and good at hiding a body.” Dorcas said firmly, staring the cowboy down.
“Yes ma’am.” He replied, casting a wide-eyed glance at Regulus, who giggled.
“And Reggie, I’m proud of you, love.” Dorcas added with a smirk and a wink, before stepping out, closing the door behind her.
“Well that was… in’erestin’.” James commented, turning on his side to face Regulus again. The younger man chuckled, reaching up and playing with one of the cowboy’s curls.
“Indeed. That’s Dorcas, for you. And she’s the most sane one, aside from Pandora. I’m just glad she didn’t come in about 10 minutes sooner.” Regulus murmured, and James bit his lip, his eyes darkening.
“Or ‘bout a minute later.” He rumbled, pulling Regulus close again.
“James!” He scolded, but it was a laugh. “She’s just in the kitchen! Haven’t you had enough this morning, anyways?” James scoffed.
“Can nev’r get enough o’ you, sweetheart.” He growled, pulling the sheet off. Regulus rolled his eyes, but he had to force himself to hide his smile.
“Fucking insatiable, I swear, you’re a… you’re…” Regulus’s own hitched breath cut him off as James hummed and began trailing his lips downward. James had said cowboys always kept their promises, and he intended to show it.
And, Regulus had stolen Dorcas’ lipstick. Later, he would show James why.
