on the topic of people wondering What The Fuck Is Up with This Guy my friend knows (TOA Apollo), Asclepius having to explain his father to anyone is. Oh boy.

You could say Asclepius lives on Earth / visits Earth much more than he does Olympus because his domain is completely and wholly centred around serving people and helping medical research come through. Additionally because he still finds Olympus and all of its posturing jarring, and maybe finds comfort in helping people like he used to and has done since ancient times.

THIS COULD ALSO MEAN that he has. Mortal friends. Which also means he’s had to have told them about his dad at some point.

Asclepius’s friend: How come we haven’t met your dad yet? Is he a prick? Asclepius: NO, no, my father was and is very kind and gentle to me, the problem is more that he can be rather… a bit much. He sometimes tends to be very… protective (VERY protective) of me (As in, the police get called). The problem is more that he can get a bit. Uppity? sometimes? He’s certainly been… cruel. More than his, or anyone’s, fair share of cruelty. But he’s improving? Asclepius’s friend: Oh wow. That sounds really complicated. Well what about your mother? Asclepius: WELL. YOU SEE. AH. OH GODS UHHHHHH-

They would make a conspiracy board for him being a gang leader (or something)! Because:

Had Asclepius’ mother killed (?!?! THAT’S HORRIBLE WHAT!)

Expressed deep, deep regrets and remorse about having Asclepius’ mother killed in a very “I was young, foolish and failed to think of anyone other than myself… I have worked with violence for a long, long time and have made many horrible, cruel decisions… I fear I am too long gone… but I wish to work with myself to be a better person, for my son whom I love dearly…” kind of way (in a mafia movie way).

Asclepius says he is in exile from his supposedly-infamously murderous family because they tried to kill him (and succeeded but SHHHHHH). And the one to order his death being his grandfather. Because he (vague conclusion through Asclepius being vague about his life) didn’t want someone to die -> didn’t want to kill someone? (“The pipeline is there!!” They say.)

Apollo going “ah yes I too share a great interest in medicine, like my dear son! Although my son is (proudly!) better at so than I am. Well, admittedly, I can sometimes tend to be, less focused on - y’know, helping someone injuries hurt less, you could say.” LIKE THAT’S VERY SUSPICIOUS.

(Ok but don’t worry Asclepius’ friends aren’t actually concerned about his dad being a mafia member at all because that would be actually Awful and Terrifying. This is an inside joke after Asclepius awkwardly explained his complicated relationship w his dad his friend was jokingly like “woah… that sounds like the backstory of a main character from a mafia movie…” and Apollo heard about his from the grapevine and immediately summoned like 20 identical cats for him to intimidatingly stroke.

The tone of the last section is making a fake BuzzFeed Unsolved / general conspiracy theory video w your friends about one of your friends. No one ever feels like they are in any danger and I imagine most probably know who and what Asclepius and Apollo actually are but tease them with this. BASICALLY THE JOKE IS THAT THEY’RE MAKING FUN OF MAFIA MOVIE STEREOTYPES AND THE WAY THE MAFIA IS DEPICTED IN MOVIES. WHICH IS VERY ROMANTICISED, OVERDRAMATIC AND SILLY.)

Coronis

What's The Love Story?

She was a princess of Thessaly, and slept with Apollo and became pregnant. To make sure that she wouldn't be violated, Apollo had a crow guard her and to keep her safe.

But when Apollo was off doing his godly duties, she cheated on him with another man, even after her father warned her not too. Apollo found out, either via his prophetic abilities or from the crow, and Artemis killed Coronis for the insult done to her brother.

Additionally, the guy Coronis slept with was killed by Zeus and Apollo turned the crow from white to black for failing to prevent Coronis's infidelity.

On Coronis's funeral pyre, Apollo performed the first C-Section and saved his son's life. People would know him as Hepis - or Asclepius.

Why Should They Win?

A win for her is a win for messy relationships all around :3 we've got cheating, murder, and family drama. What's not to love?

What's The Love Story?

Apollo disguised himself as a goatherd one day soon after killing Python and Branchus came across him, fell instantly in love with the beautiful shepherd, and kissed him. Apollo was just as enamored with Branchus as he was with him and granted him prophetic abilities, as well as a crown and magical staff!!

Going back some years to Branchus's birth, you could say that his mom received a vision of his future as a lover of Apollo - she dreamt that a glowing sun went into her mouth and through her stomach.

Also, since Apollo met Branchus soon after killing Python, he's probably Apollo's first lover EVER! Which is SO COOL APOLLO'S FIRST LOVE WAS A SHEPHERD BOY THE BISEXUALITY IS REAL

also also, an altar was built on the place where Branchus kissed Apollo <3 true love <3 and prophecies from Branchus were second only to Delphi itself, so Branchus got some STAR TREATMENT

I adore the folklore paragraph and I'm really excited to learn more about the cultures of the Anurai and others throughout the game and new fauna of Pandora's landscapes!

However....

...I'm ngl, the first two paragraphs are a bit strange to me LMFAO.

Their aerodynamic wings are connected to their forelimb joints [...]

This seems a bit redundant; wouldnt their forelimbs being wings mean their forelimbs would be "connected" to their wings inherently? Unless they dont truly fly and just glide with specialized forelimbs with membranes in a similar fashion of some terran squirels or lizards, or that i cant see their other limbs that are hidden by perspective. This sentence rlly stood out in a strange way lol.

Ig im having trouble imagining what they mean so I anticipate seeing more images of this creature and its movement and appearence in the game! :D

Coronis have a large narrow tail made of muscle that can vibrate like insect wings.

Im ngl I had to read this sentence repeatedly bc at first i was so amused by the redundancy of saying their tail was composed of muscle LMFAO. But then I realized they mentioned the muscles of the tail were unique by using the subordinate clause "that" to detail how the tail is specialized.

The diction still threw me off though, bc I dont really think of insect wings as vibrating wrt their movement, as much as the sound their flapping makes. So when I read this sentence, i had a hard time picturing the tail of this creature rapidly flapping back and fourth in a blur like insect wings do, and thought the comparison was strange.

But maybe the Coronis can move their tails that fast! Maybe even if the movement is slower than the flap of insect wings, the movement they do make when wafting or attracting insects to them in some way truly does make a vibrating sound like the hum of insect wings, which is pretty cool! I want to learn more about this incredible tail with muscles in it 💀.

Coronis always flee to safety whenever a predator is nearby

I think this mainly stands out as strange to me bc the diction. I see that its kinda like a set up to a juxtaposition or something, where the the idea that theyre skittish is introduced to comment on the irony that their high fear response is result poor preceptions (which is a nice lead into the folklore abt the creatures' propensity to flee lol). But it seems a bit odd to say an animal flees upon seeing its predator. Bc yea? Why wouldnt it?

Ofc theres other fear responses to seeing a predator, real or percieved, like hiding, freezing, playing dead, etc. And not all prey animals flee from seeing their predators (ex: deer sometimes just stare and move on if ur far away enough). But idk... i think I would have just started out by saying the Coronis is skittish bc of its poor senses or high fear response. It would have been interesting to add a detail about what biologically makes them easy to scare to juxtapose to the folklore. Maybe we'll get those details in the game lore and other Avatar books!

Asclepius

CORONIS, daughter of Phlegyas, King of the Lapiths, Ixion’s brother, lived on the shores of the Thessalian Lake Boebeis, in which she used to wash her feet.

Apollo became her lover, and left a crow with snow-white feathers to guard her while he went to Delphi on business. But Coronis had long nursed a secret passion for Ischys, the Arcadian son of Elatus, and now admitted him to her couch, though already with child by Apollo. (Asclepius, The Greek Myths by Robert Graves, pp 173-178).

The crow immediately flew to tell Apollo about Coronis’ infidelity but much good it did the wretched creature: the furious god blamed the crow for not pecking out Ischys’ eyes while he had the chance so he cursed the bird. The crow has been black feathered ever since. Coronis was also punished. When Apollo told his sister Artemis of her misdeeds the vengeful goddess filled Coronis full of arrows. Apollo was filled with remorse as Coronis lay dying and persuaded Hermes to save the child by cutting it from her womb. Apollo named the baby Asclepius and entrusted his care to the Centaur Cheiron, who taught the boy the arts of medicine.

Asclepius used his extraordinary powers to raise heroes from the dead to such an extent that Hades complained to Zeus that Asclepius was depriving the Underworld of its citizens. Zeus discovered Asclepius in the act of raising Tyndareus from the dead and killed both of them with a thunderbolt. Zeus later repented of his actions and restored Asclepius to life, setting him and his curative serpent in the stars.
