This is an extremely interesting take, and the more I think about it the more I think you're right. I just learned last year that the original artwork wasn't scanned, it was photographed with expert lighting (which makes sense given that Naoko loves to include 3D objects like beads and gems).

This was all done in the 90s too, when computers were A Thing but not nearly as ubiquitous as they would be just a few years later. Back then nobody was thinking about preserving digital copies of things, and even if they wanted to the very limited nature of 90s computers would have made it impossible to save high-quality files.

As a fandom archivist and someone who is very into archival in general, the idea that the original negatives of all that art could very well be lost makes me incredibly sad :(
