Happy Halloween! I'm really excited to be finally launching* what is maybe one of my most ambitious, largest work yet. This online library is the next phase of a research project that began in May 2020, when I first mused on how comics as a field doesn't have a resource that catalogues devices used in the medium. Like, theatre has devices, so does literature, and film! So why shouldn't comics? I always had an interest in comics studies and analysis. I love reading, making and thinking comics. However most of my knowledge was intuitive - I learned comics from osmosis and experience. This is true for many of my peers. Speaking about comics as a creator is hard, because we don't have a robust system of language. When we had to speak, many of us tend to reach for the language developed for film by film practitioners. If there is language specific to comics, it's either scattered in multiple blogs or hidden away in academic journals. The Comics Devices library is meant to aggregate everything and everybody into a single hub! After exploring some multiple resources, alongside some original, independent research, here is the first edition! * The Comics Devices project is still a work-in-progress! It's not final, nor will it ever be. This is why I am seeking contributors to help build this library. Translations, comics examples, etc. There is a lot of work to do! #did i need to do a 9 page comic for this... well who knows. i had this scene in mind for a long time and wanted to do it justice! #important moment for both of them. you can see starstruck just generating the bandee shaped mental illness in real time. #and bandee resolving to be her point of contact with waddle dees if the others can't handle it #he is after all; the strongest and the bravest and the best of them. #“what is this signature like” it's like meeting something that has a human face but you can tell it is Not Human. think: uncanny valley #it also took her quite some time to pick up her own voice. she could not speak (popstarian) on her own for a while #she does not mimic anymore though if she can help it because it tends to weird others out and she wants to avoid that!! #it's not like a fun or enjoyable impersonation; it's like a perfect recording on a device. #also i guess this is *finally* the reveal of the 'hospital' mentioned previously that folks noticed and also like... her name 😂 #anyway.... thank you to everyone who voted for starstruck in that poll and has encouraged this insane self indulgence... wow. #never thought i'd get to draw stuff like this and have others look forward to it. i really hope you'll enjoy this!!! #my art #my comics #starstruck dee #bandana waddle dee

I have too many thoughts on the Yunmeng siblings to fit into a succinct post, but I can offer you a Jiang Yanli addendum to the tummy hurt alignment.

#ask #poorly drawn mdzs #mdzs #jiang yanli #They way I analyze characters is in two layers - the first is how these characters act as literary devices #(i.e. their relationship to the protagonist and themes of the story) #And the second is who they are as independent characters. #Which means I have extensive thoughts on JC and JYL on a scene to scene basis as well as overall thoughts. #The tummy hurt comic was always about the different ways we process grief #and Jiang Yanli's role as the 'comforting older sister figure' despite the hurt she carries in her heart truly fascinates me. #I can relate in the sense I find it easier to care for others than care for my own grief. #But that grief caught me eventually. And it was ugly and raw. #JYL is grief in rose tinted glasses (minimized). JC is the messy chaos of grief when raw and exposed. Clever move to make them siblings!

i always get a little sad when people tell me they like scollace from just my fan art and haven't checked out any of the source material because like nothing i make is going to ever fully represent their dynamic and the joy of shipping to me is really engaging with the canon material and going crazy over breaking down the crumbs of content. and it's a nice comic series! even just watching the anime you're missing out on a lot without context from the comics.

so i guess for the record for anyone who's interested but don't know where to start, /especially/ if you're just here for roommate yaoi. start with the comics. it's the most "scollace-heavy" and it's only 6 books. starting with the anime would probably leave you really confused on why anyone ships them (or what's going on if this is your first exposure to scott pilgrim media) the movie is a fine entrance piece also, imho. like it lets you in on the dynamics between each character and the general plot (even though the characterization is pretty boiled down, but hey a lot of shots are 1:1 to the comics so that's fun.) but yeah. don't let my silly gay drawings dictate your shipping takes. read the books yourself! they're fun and if you're a fresh adult that still feels perma-14 you'll probably find it fun too.

The Preferable Alternative- Prologue - Part 1

New au. I can't explain the main thought behind this without spoilers. And since i'm jumping straight into a multi-part comic, i won't be giving out any.

Basically vibes for this is that it's kinda creepy and maybe suspenseful with eventual hurt/comfort (if that doesn't make sense, im sorry, i have a hard time describing things). I'm also pretty mean to Donnie. Not "Donnie vs" mean, but unfortunately this idea wouldn't work with anyone else.

(for those that get anxious, like me. There is no main character death. (might not be death at all but we shall see. that depends on one character and even i'm not sure exactly what they'd do yet.) and no one's gets serious physical injuries. Definitely more hurt/comfort than plain angst. b/c that's how i roll. I can't do straight up angst.)

I'll write a proper summery once the prologue's done. I don't want to spoil it too much. For now, just know it's a PB&J duo story that happens during the 6 weeks before the Krang invasion.

Idk if I talked about this here, but for the past 3 years I've been quietly developing a particular kind of comics taxonomy: identifying, naming and describing the visual-literary devices used in comics. Most of them are devices appropriated and adapted from other mediums, like poetry, rhetoric, cinema, etc - but quite a few are unique to comics. My intent is to give language not just for comics creators when they need to articulate their authorial choices, but for critics, scholars and teachers to talk about comics as a visual-literary art form.

Anyway, the research has gotten to the point where it's ready for the public. My plan is for this resource to be delivered in the form of a Wikipedia, online database, basically an accessible website that contains all the information related to the devices, including working examples from other graphic novels, webcomics, etc. It's STILL not ready yet - Idk when it's gonna debut, but I've recently secured an opportunity that will make progress move faster.

This zine right here is both soft-launch promo + a fancy business card for the Comics Devices guide. It's meant to pitch my research and act as a quick reference type of thing for folks. I'm only able to sell this in person in Australia, but folks in the US might get an edition soon (related to aforementioned opportunity).

But yeah. Big comics stuff happening.

While Clark doesn't like cars or use them much, he knows a lot about engines and mechanics from growing up on a farm and occasionally warns Bruce about technical problems he can see or hear in the Batmobile. They definitely bond over these shared interests as Clark is pretty knowledgeable about most things because he has an immediate grasp about how they work and are built. Bruce is fascinated enough to have the same grasp of things and problem-solves intuitively enough that it probably feels like they share the same way of perceiving the world.
