At the Edge

The fled tide has left exposed

not only a stone-studded beach

but also the reach of under cove:

kelp-covered rocks and salted pools.

See out there at the edge, where

suggested surf eases in and trickles back,

two human figures standing

as silhouettes – dark lines

against the sun’s shimmer –

marking the bottom of a vast expanse

of cove opening out into a bay

and, stretching up from the horizon line:

sky’s aerial ocean?

Intriguing, isn’t it, that these slender

black figures –  almost disappearing

into the vast surround –

are as fully human as any one of us,

drifting through memories

finding the music

that merges into yearning

at the yawning dawn of a coastal day?
