Fishy
My buddy from my Navy days was a petty officer named Mahan. Mahan’s wife, Stella, is the story’s focus- and I’d better let you know at the beginning that Stella is a mermaid – elegant tail and all.* Neither family was thrilled with the match. The Mahans wished Walt had married an Irish Shidhe, one of the Irish Fae. Stella’s fishy relatives wondered why a denizen of the deep had not been good…

End of the Road
Among a close set of my friends, the term “end of the road” had a distinctive meaning. “I’ve hit the end of the road!” meant you were leaving our close little circle of travelers. Most often, it meant you were putting your pack down in your girlfriend’s apartment for connubial bliss. We’d sip a glass of fine Irish Whiskey, ceremoniously state another one has bit the dust, and get on with our…

It's Spring!
That’s right. It’s here in New England. – Spring! The trout lilies are blooming, and the peach tree is flowering. Last year, a freak frost took all the cherries and peaches I bud—right around this date. 26 degrees was the right temperature to kill the flower. But wait…frost is predicted for tonight. 26 degree. SHIT!!!!! Yes, it’s spring in New England!

Angel
This little folk art-style angel is a sort of Christmas-time dreamcatcher. It swings above our Christmas tree every year. I carved it one winter years ago when the kids were still little.

The Subway Ride
It’s a stereotype that New Yorkers mind their own business, stick their noses into the Daily News, and pay no attention to what’s going on on the other side of the subway car. It’s not true. They are very aware of what’s going on and nervously waiting to see if the infection will spread to their area of the car. It takes a lot of bravery for one person to stand up against a group of thugs. The…

Nocturnal
Winter is my least favorite season. I need little excuse to keep the Christmas lights up till Saint Valentine’s Day. They make the nocturnal hours a bit more bearable.

Dreams
Maple syruping ends early, dry and wet cycles are disturbed, and the oceans, always the anchor, are in trouble. These are the things that worry me. I can’t fix most of them, but I can ameliorate some of them. I’ve been working for years on improving the garden soil so my plantings are more drought-resistant. I’ve also rewilded the back of our lot to enhance plant and animal diversity. My war on…

Wings
Years ago, I had a weird dream. Two of my favorite artists, John Haley Bellamy and Salvador Dali, were sitting with me in a coffeehouse discussing art. I merely sat by and listened while the two masters talked. They were deeply involved in a discussion of exaggeration and distortion in art. At one point, they turned to me and asked what I thought. I opened my mouth to speak but woke from the…

To the Woods
You love to do something so much that you do it every evening to unwind, and you can either develop a nasty habit or become terminally bored. Ice cream, beer, reefer, a cigar, brandy, or many other things enjoyed in moderation are lovely, but habitually indulging in them might be problematic. OK, you say, I can see that some of that stuff can be physically harmful but terminally boring? It’s the…

Choose Wisely
I know reasonable, sober, and intelligent people who are into weird TikTok memes, strange conspiracy junk on X, and spend vast amounts of time doing frivolous things on Facebook. None of them are people I’d peg as among those easy to mislead or gullible. That they evidently can’t quench a need for the outre is enough to make me careful about how much social media I consume. After all, if they can…

Profound
Jotting down the first thing that came to our mind was a game we used to play back in the 1960’s. At about 9 in the evening, after the first couple of marijuana joints, we needed something to tee off the rest of the evening. Someone would take the sheet of paper and jot down the first weed vapor-inspired bit of idiocy that came to mind. One by one, the rest of us would add a phrase, sentence, or…

Rule of Thirds
I The third-floor apartment on Park Avenue had a few amenities, including a view of the Kuomingtang sign down the street. I had showed up in Baltimore a few weeks after discharge from the Navy and was invited to share quarters with a friend. We had a “sometimes” business carving “genuine” Tiki gods and other countercultural junk. We accomplished this mostly with a Dremel tool and routers. One…

Feelings
Over the years that I’ve worked as a craftsman, I’ve participated in many craft shows, boat shows, and art shows. The interactions with the casual visitors to the shows are what it’s all about. Your job is to take the minute you have their attention and turn it into a motivated sale. And, no, you can’t come across as a crass, ruthless sales clerk. Your job is to interest them in what you have…
