NIAN
Back with another round of 2022 Huluween shorts, we get NIAN from filmmaker  Michelle Krusiec. The beginning starts a little shaky with the dialogue, but man, the scare scene at the end really lifts this film up with impressive special & practical effects. That section alone could compete with many straight to streaming titles that I’ve seen lately. Krusiec’s clever use of Chinese mythology with the Nian legend, adds history and weight to her timely story about modern day anti-Asian racism. At roughly six minutes, you should certainly give this horror short a look!

The scale of MXTX characters hand writing from Worst to Best
Hua Cheng: literally intelligible, those basically aren't even words any.
Wei wuxian: the equivalent of a sleep deprived adhd stem student notes right before an exam. Technically legible but only to him, people who know him really well.
Luo Binghe: it's good. Not outstanding but Nicely legible, pretty when it needs to be.
Shen Qingqiu: technically there's nothing wrong with his hand writing, but His writing is too modern for the Xianxia settings he's living in and although it's not too much of a problem it's definitely enough to make peoples eyebrow raise.
Xie Lian: stunningly beautiful calligraphy. Truly just art in written form.
Lan wangji: the most beautiful and technically perfect hand writing you have everything seen. Calligraphy teachers weap with joy when they see his writing.

MXTX Diaspora May is back for 2024!
MXTX Diaspora May is an event in which Chinese diaspora creators come together to share the diverse aspects of Chinese culture, as well as connect with each other over lived experiences.
Through the promotion and creation of these fanworks, we hope to encourage thoughtful self-reflection throughout the broader fandom, especially with regard to embracing cultural humility and dismantling structures and behaviors that allow racism to flourish, both in fandom and in real life.
Support of MXTX Diaspora May will go a long way towards creating a more inclusive and open climate in our shared online spaces, especially for creators who rarely get their voices heard in the English-speaking side of fandom. We aim to uplift the unique voices and stories of our participants, and we encourage anyone who enjoys works from this event to share in the celebration of Chinese culture from Chinese creators.
Tumblr media

HEHJKSHKJDS#im really satisfied w my zhen yazhu design teehee#idk how it would work in like. chinese characters but hades and i had the joke of like. wwx seeing zhen lin's name and being like 'a-jie.#'we just have to replace the vowels with a's and switch around the names and its lan zhan'#'i've connected the dots' 'you didn't connect shit' 'ive connected them'#there is like so so so so many more ideas we've had for this its crazy HEKJDSHK maybe i'll draw some more and make another post ..#after finals that is#a special rundown for those w the patience to read my tags HEJKSDHKJSD#nie huaisang and mianmian are the ones helping lan qiren in the search for lan wangji. lan xichen is the one who put out the search#for him initially but he's been so discouraged by his little brother being missing for 13 years he can't really take being the lead anymore#so lqr stepped up#the wens and wwx dont really Want to participate in the search. what with the spotlight on them n everything#but they desperately need the money to try and relocate to a much safer and more secluded location. attacks and all that#when they were younger wwx found lwj outside of the gentian cottage waiting for his mom and offered to wait w him and brought him a blanket#and sumn warm to drink. i think that implies wwx's parents died sooner but. the idea is sweet so . i just posted but i feel INSANE hua cheng’s entire appearance in the ghost groom arc is just symbolism.
when xie lian is alone (having sent everyone away, in danger but perfectly capable of fighting his way out), hua cheng steps in front of xie lian, offers his hand, and guides xie lian through the woods to where he needs to be. monsters cower before him, magical barriers don’t stop him, he steps on the skulls of enemies and crushes them so thoroughly that xie lian behind him feels like he is walking on flat ground. he doesn’t just swoop in without asking — he offers his hand, and waits, and xie lian willingly reaches out and lets himself be guided. and his grip is featherlight, even as he steers xie lian through danger and darkness. his blood rain warns away all who would dare harm them, but xie lian doesn’t get hit by a drop. and hua cheng does this all in his true form, not in disguise, because he’s not playing a character or trying to achieve anything, this is just him. despite not being confident enough to face xie lian directly, hua cheng has already shown him exactly who he is.
(now excuse me while i gnaw through an entire wall because how was this not glaringly obvious to me all along)
