PIC(S) INFO: Part 2 of 2 -- Spotlight on assorted shots of the Chinese Dragon, and the only mythical creature in the Chinese zodiac, from Eric Carle's "Dragons, Dragons, and Other Creatures that Never Were" (1988), illustrated by the late, great Eric Carle (1929-2021).
OVERVIEW: "A camel’s head, a deer’s horns and a demon’s eyes. A bull’s ears, a snake’s neck and a clam’s belly. A carp’s scales, an eagle’s claws and a tiger’s paws. Pieced together, these disparate physical features yield an illustrious creature of Chinese legend: the dragon.
Believed to soar through the waters and heavens as a nature deity ruling over the rains, the dragon is a dominant figure in Chinese mythology, perched at the center of longstanding creation tales. Ancient legends depict the mythical being, called long in Chinese, descending to the ground with the fog and rising out of the ocean with the sun, moving the seasons in its wake. Initially a vague motif in ancient Chinese art, the dragon is now an emblem of benevolent divinity, imperial power and sweeping unity. Its symbolism builds on thousands of years of folklore and Chinese history. And, as the only mythological animal in the Chinese zodiac system, the dragon takes on yet another layer of meaning."

With the help of wonderful @PEPPAJEANN I am bringing you the CARL TATTOOS~ (great for all your artistic reference needs) With and without transparency, in png format.
BUT before you run away with them, COULD SOMEONE PLEASE HELP AND BRING ME HD SCREENSHOTS OF CARL'S NECKLINE?? (look! tats goes up to the side of the neck, I need more details!)
Aren't they splendid? If that's not a symbol of his relationship with Elijah, what else would it be? The right sleeve's style is obviously Japanese and if we've got a nerd who loves Japanese culture that's Elijah. But let's look closer. First, this is obviously a very Carl tattoo, because skulls. Carl is obsessed with death. If you look at his tacky house: there are skulls fucking everywhere, pinned butterflies, a stuffed owl overlooking the bed, a whole dead giraffe and a near complete tylosaurus (or mosasaurus) skeleton [it's no wonder Carl has a tendency to be dramatic and just die if Markus doesn't do as Carl expects]
Woops tangent. So, skulls! But then I also tried to figure what those flowers might be, and orchid rockroses (cistus purpureus) is the closest I could find:
Flimsy petals, pinkish, dark blotches, golden ring of etamines, white stamen... Close enough? So I looked up the meaning of that flower.
OKAY THAT SOUNDS LIKE CARL, I'LL TAKE IT 5 (Carl why!!?)
Then we've got carps forming a Ying and Yang symbol and giving us all ATLA flashbacks. You know what I mean. The symbol represents interconnection between opposite principles. It's a circle, immanence, neutrality. Fitting for a man who never takes responsibility and expects others to be the ones to make a change.
Now, that red-eyed, three-clawed dragon has at least 3 heads. I tried to look up Japanese dragons and interestingly, Yamata no Orochi is one of the few monstrous evil dragons out there, characterized by being a red-eyed abomination with 8 heads, 8 tails, and plants growing over his body. Also requires a diet of human sacrifices, and drops OP artifacts when slayed. Vulnerable to booze. And I'm looking at those flowery things growing from the dragon heads on the tat, like uhmm. Also, Yamata no Orochi symbolizes the concept of "you're never finished until the last task or detail is completed." Which is a mood an artist can relate to, ig. Seems like a Carl thing to go like "Yeah I'm getting of tat of that girl-eating asshole dragon."

Nervous breakdown for 'bad things happen bingo'
I got a busy weekend ahead of me, not only do I got the next chapter of Carpe Diem to finish up but I got two other prompts to write!

Dipper had his elbows braced on his knees and he stared down at the floor, the constant feeling of Mabel rubbing his back brought some comfort.
“You got this,” Mabel murmured, “he can’t hurt you.”
“No,” Dipper agreed quietly, “but I’ll see him.”
Dipper ended up agreeing to testify in court, he would only have to speak in two different cases. For ‘the suit-man’ (or David) and Missy. Carl (or Nigel) had taken a plea deal. Today was David’s case.
He was sitting in the witness room with Mabel, she and the Grunkles had come with him. Both to show their support and to testify the day before. Dipper’s parents wanted to come too but couldn’t be pulled away from work in time.
“You don’t have to look at him,” Mabel said “just look at me or Stan or Ford, okay.”
Dipper took a deep breath “yeah, okay.”
Mabel stood up “I gotta get in there, are you going to be okay?”
“Yeah... Yeah I’ll be okay.”
His sister left the room and Dipper was left alone, well mostly alone. There were four other people in the room. He vaguely recognized three of them to be the women and guards who nabbed him from the warehouse but the last one he didn’t know. Dipper could feel them staring at him but he did his best to ignore it, hiding his face in a book (he wasn’t allowed his phone).
One by one the other witnesses were pulled away to testify and Dipper didn’t see them after. He wasn’t surprised, as soon as he was done he was high-tailing it out of there. Thank goodness Pacifica (being the law student that she was) agreed to sit in on everything and give him the sparknotes.
Finally, it was his turn to testify. Dipper took a deep breath and followed the bailiff into the courtroom. His eyes scanned the room until they landed on the defendant's table where David was sitting, staring at him with a cold, calculating expression. Dipper felt a shiver run down his spine.
Dipper sat at the witness stand and answered the questions as best he could, he made sure to look anywhere but the defendant’s table. Despite knowing Stan, Ford, and Mabel were in the room Dipper didn’t look at them as he shared his story. He didn’t want to see their reactions.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Dipper's testimony was over. He was dismissed from the stand and allowed to leave the courtroom. He walked out, feeling a sense of relief and exhaustion wash over him. He sat down on a bench outside and soon the rest of his family joined him. Doing his best to hold in his lunch.
“Are you alright Dipper?” Ford asked.
“Yeah…” Dipper said “I just want to go back to the hotel.”
Stan tried to brighten the mood “look on the bright side kid, the worst part is over.”
“No.” Dipper said “next week Missy is going to court. And I need to testify.”

Dipper sat behind the witness stand once again, his hands shaking from where they were clasped in his lap. In front of him was the accusation lawyer.
“Mr Pines.” He said “can you share with the court your first interaction with Ms Kelly?”
“Y-yes” Dipper said, voice shaking a bit. “She was the first person I interacted with, she had me undress for her and then shaved off all my hair.” He ran a hand over his head, his hair finally starting to grow back. “She kept touching me the whole time she was with me.”
“Can you explain what you mean by ‘touching you’ Mr Pines?”
“Um yeah...” Dipper said “she would place her hands on my arms, my shoulders, my back, my chest. She would run her hands over my body, even when I asked her to stop.”
The questioning kept on like that, the lawyer asked him about things Missy did or say and Dipper answered the best he could. Finally he heard the blessed “no further questions, your honor.” He was half way done.
The defense lawyer stood and for the first time Dipper (accidently) looked at Missy. She smirked at him and winked. His breath caught and his heart raced. The judge must have glanced at him and noticed the look on his face.
“We will take a brief, fifteen minute recess,” she decided.
“But your honor,” the defense lawyer said “I need to cross-examine the witness.”
“And you can do it after.” The judge stood and everyone followed, watching as she left the room.
“Mr Pines,” Dipper turned to see one of the bailiff said “I can bring you to a separate room if you would like a minute to compose yourself.”
“Yes” Dipper said “yes, yes please…. Yeah that would be great. Thank… Thank you.”
“Of course,” The bailiff said and led him out of a side door and to a small, private room. “Would you like me to get anyone for you?” Dipper shook his head “very well, I’ll be back in a few minutes after the break.”
“T-thanks.”
As soon as the bailiff left Dipper sat down heavily in a chair and the dam broke. His body shook and tears polled in his eyes. It felt like he was having a nasty mix between a nervous breakdown (or panic attack) and an emotional breakdown.
Dipper thought he was doing okay, sure, sleeping sucked and he had trouble letting people touch him. But other than that he was doing fine! Then all it took was to see David and Missy for him to break down. Dipper pulled out the small packet of tissues from his suit jacket that Ford insisted he put there and wiped at his eyes and forced himself to take deep breaths.
Dipper was so much more scared of Missy than he was of David or Nigel. During his time in captivity the two men were the ones to hurt him or order others to. Missy never did that. But that did not mean she was innocent, she had power over him that David and Nigal never had. And that’s what scared him.
He was grateful every day that nothing permanent ever happened but it was only because Missy never made him do anything. Dipper was positive that if he hadn’t been saved when he had she would have done it.
There was a soft tap at the door and the bailiff poked his head in. “Time to go back?” Dipper asked and he nodded.
Standing Dipper was led back to the courtroom, the bailiff not commenting on his shaking hands or his blotchy face. Dipper soon sat one again behind the witness stand and the defense lawyer stood.

I was going to add in another scene but I didn't have time. Nothing I can do about it, I'll probably write it out and include it in the AO3 version.

MARY’S LAMB
1908
Mary’s Lamb is a three-act presentation written, composed, produced, directed, and starring Richard Carle. It is based on the French play Madame Mongodin by Ernest Blum and Raoul Roché, featuring musical contributions by Robert Hood Bowers, and H.L. Heartz.
An English language production of Madame Mongodin in London was titled Mrs. Ponderbury’s Past.
Set in Haverstraw New York, it is the story of Leander Lamb, henpecked husband of shrewish Mary Lamb, and how he sets out to become master of his house and his own fate. In a burst of enthusiasm, Leander makes an appointment with a retired actress in an artist's studio, where the two are observed by Lamb's wife!
The American version premiered on October 28, 1907 at Philadelphia’s Walnut Street Theatre starring popular comic Harry Conor. It was teamed with another play by Carle The Spring Chicken, starring Carle himself. This led to many critics joking about barnyard animals and menu fare.
“The Philadelphia critics have been cutting it into mutton chops the past week.” ~ DAVENPORT DAILY TIMES
None the less, the panned production moved on to Trenton, Brooklyn, Hartford, Burlington, Buffalo, and even Canada, where audiences seemed to be enjoying themselves, while critics carped.

This startling item appeared on December 8, 1907, but it would prove only partly true. The production itself was shelved, true, but the play would live again. This time starring Carle himself. And in Atlantic City.
In mid-February 1908, Carle finished-up The Spring Chicken and went back to New York to begin rehearsing his new production of Mary’s Lamb.
The new Lamb would have its debut on March 3rd in Columbus OH. The number of musical numbers went from four to sixteen! The piece was now a full-fledged musical comedy.
“Richard Carle... is the saving grace of ‘Mary's Lamb,’ the musical farce in which he has Just opened a month's engagement at the Illinois theater. He ought to be, for he created it, book, lyrics, score, and chorus effects. Yet it is not Mr. Carle's authorship, but his merit as a comedian, that carries the thing off. When he Is not on the stage the entertainment is limp and devoid of originality.” ~ CHARLES W. COLLINS
“Richard Carle is said to have made ‘Mary’s Lamb’ fully as Frenchy as ‘The Spring Chicken.’ Some bits of it are declared to be daring if not nauseating.” ~ TIMES-DEMOCRAT
In April 1908, as the new ewe toured, Harry Conor (birthname John Henry O’Connor) brought a lawsuit against Mr. Carle, claiming he was contracted to appear in Mary’s Lamb for two seasons and that $30,000 salary was owned to him. Conor contended that Carle dismissed him in order to save money and put himself back in the limelight.
The play had been selected to open a brand new theatre on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City named the Apollo owned an operated by Samuel F. Nixon. When built it boasted more than 1,600 seats and all modern conveniences. Nixon’s Apollo Theatre would become the premiere new play incubator on the East Coast. It eventually was converted to a movie theatre showing its final film in August 1968. It converted into the Apollo Burlesque Theatre and was demolished in the 1970’s. Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum currently occupies the address.
The opening night was celebrated on May 13, 1908, which also marked the Atlantic City opening of Mary’s Lamb. For this new, Broadway-bound production, the leading role was played by the author.
The grand opening attracted a prestigious audience from Atlantic City, Philadelphia, and Broadway.
Mary’s Lamb opened on Broadway on May 25, 1908 at the New York Theatre (1514-16 Broadway at 44th Street). It took a ‘summer break’ from July 19th, resuming performances at the New York on August 24th and closing on September 5th for a total of 80 Broadway performances.
About the venue: Built in 1895 by the Hammersteins as the Music Hall boasting 2600 seats, it was renamed in 1912 and briefly called the Moulin Rouge in 1915. Shortly afterward, it became part of the Loew’s movie theatre / vaudeville chain, being demolished in 1935.
During his summer break, Carle leased a yacht! When the play returned on August 24th, it was with a nearly all new cast surrounding Carle.
The songs of Mary’s Lamb were published in sheet music collections and in Sunday newspaper supplements.
Carle and four of his 40 ‘Spring Lambkins’.
After the play closed in New York, Carle continued to tour it. The tour continued into May 1909.
