dude as someone who understands the nuances of enmeshment + the varying degrees of abuse-versus-codependency I'm really more of a Beveryly-Did-Nothing-Wrong-er than the show, which is a Beverly-Is-Equally-At-Fault-er
#am I saying she did nothing wrong? no she did a bunch of stuff that was wrong#mostly lying to Genevieve when she asked her outright if it was her the whole time#but all the stuff that Elliot was doing on her own that she had no idea about? all the intrusions into her life and relationship that#Beverly didn't know how to stop? that doesn't seem like HER FAULT like it seems more like Elliot doing whatever the fuck she wants and#justifying it to them both retroactively by saying that it was all for beverly#like. the misusing her eggs to do something very very illegal and possibly unethical WITHOUT HER KNOWLEDGE OR PERMISSION the second that she#sets a boundary is um. like a big red flag to me about the nature of their relationship#I'm not saying they're not codependent or anything but like. holy shit how do you get off blaming Beverly for any of this#the end was very much Her Choice (kinda? hormones + trauma + cycling back into toxic patterns is uh. something really hard to break out of)#but like. holy god do you not see how Elliot was the bigger influence on this outcome#most of Beverly's unhappiness was due to the certainty of it making Elliot UNhappy#THATS what was killing her not that she wasn't meant to be happy. we need to compare this to the scenes of women feeling deformed for#uterine Abnormalities or for having miscarriages#like the. my body isn't meant to have babies my body kills babies directly translates over to the lines about not being meant to be happy#like. that's not the case it makes sense for you to feel that way but I promise that's not the case! fuck! this was such a compelling show#I'm mad that it ended on such a shitty note!! I can't say I didn't see it coming but like. fuck!!! what was any of it For!!!!!

Tangled [part 2]
Tumblr media
Clarisse la rue x Persephone!repunzel!fem!reader
After discovering you in the tower, Clarisse offers you a chance to finally get a glimpse of freedom, joining them on their quest back to camp half blood.
Warnings:
Toxic parents, yandere!parents, oblivious!, Clarisse being stubborn, overprotectiveness, cannon typical violence, bullying, reader has poor survival instincts, more to come maybe
You were scared to meet the other two people Clarisse had informed you were halfbloods. She told you that you were probably one too, or at least she thought you were.
She said it would explain your hair, and why your parents had left you in a tower your entire life. And how you could make plant life grow at will, or the fact your mother was called Persephone (a pretty big giveaway if you asked Clarisse)
You just thought that was all normal. Apparently not.
She told you this stuff as her brother made his way up the wall, the other girl, Anna, climbing up behind him.
When they eventually climbed over, sweaty and out of breath you watched them cautiously with wide eyes from your spot across the room.
Clarisse sighed and walked over to you, “it’s fine they’re my friends, they’re not gonna do anything”
You looked to her then, she thought you looked like a baby dear, terrified with wide doe eyes staring into her own with a little terrified pout on your lips. She couldn’t help but find it cute.
“What. The. Fuck” Elliot said in between deep breaths as he stumbled into the room, “who is she and why are we breaking into her house?”
“Shut up” Clarisse stated, rolling her eyes at the boy, “this is y/n, I’m pretty sure she’s a half blood and she’s letting us stay in her tower for the night”
“I am?”
“She is?”
“I-I don’t remember agreeing to that..” you stated looking at her confused.
“She’s a half blood?” Elliot asked, being ignored by his sister.
“You wanna go outside right?” Clarisse said, hoping her assumptions were correct.
You waited for a moment, not wanting to answer. Whenever you brought up leaving to your mother she got mad and told you how dangerous the outside world was, but you couldn’t help but not believe her with how beautiful the part of the world you can see is.
“yes but…” You eventually nodded at her hesitantly, muttering out, “but it’s dangerous out there, I can’t leave”
“It’s not dangerous” Clarisse stated, her brother wacking her arm causing her to correct herself, “well not if you’re with us, we’ll protect you”
You looked at them suspiciously, going to speak before being interrupted by Elliot.
“This seems like kidnapping” he said bluntly, causing Clarisse to roll her eyes as you looked between the two in worry and watched the other girl walk towards the window in annoyance of another argument between the siblings.
“Kidnapping from who?” Clarisse responded.
“Um maybe the parents she just said don’t want her going outside?” He rebutted.
“Oh the parents that have locked her away in a tower her entire life? Sure because that’s normal…”
“Yeah those parents Clarisse!” He continued, “the ones that are probably literal gods and will kill us if we take her!”
She glared at the boy for a moment, before both of them turned back to face you, the shock of it making you stumble backwards a little with wide eyes.
“Do you want to leave?” Clarisse asked for a second time, looking at you with expectantly.
“Well I-i guess” you responded, cowering back slightly as the siblings both glared into your sole, clarisses stare turning into a triumphant smirk when you finished speaking.
“There” Clarisse said smugly, “not kidnapping if it’s willing”
🍊☀️🪷
“Come on” Clarisse said firmly the next day, climbing over the side of the window ledge and beginning to scale down the side of the building, her brother following after her leaving you and the other girl stood watching them.
“H-how am I meant to do that?” You stuttered out to the girl, fear of the distance between you and the grass below.
“It’s not that bad, honest” she told you with a reassuring smile, watching you gulp.
“If you really can’t do it like we are” she added, jumping up onto the ledge, continuing with a shrug, “then use your plant power thing to help you down”
“Hurry up Anna” Elliot shouted up to the girl, causing her to begin to find her footing on the side of the tower.
You watched the three make their way down for a minute, contemplating whether you should actually leave or not.
Your parents had always warned you of the outside world, your mother said people were dangerous, you’d grown up on tales your step father told you of monsters that wanted to kill you.
Clarisse looked up at you in confusion, watching you have an inner panic and contemplate actually leaving, your head peeking out the window to look at the height.
She knew you needed a minute, you’d literally never stepped outside your home before, it obviously wouldn’t be easy.
But her impatience got the better of her when she shouted up again, “you’ll be fine!”
You looked down at her in shock, shaken out of your mini panic attack by her shout, “honestly! We’re gonna protect you, nothings gonna hurt you”
Taking a deep breath you prepared yourself to finally leave. You’d wanted to do this your entire life, you couldn’t let your nerves get the better of you.
Turning around you quickly grabbed a small bag you had packed the night before, all of your most important possessions safely packed inside.
Taking a step forward, you climbed up onto the ledge, reaching your arm out to a hook above you, vines beginning to wrap around the walls and down to your arm.
The three halfbloods watched as you chucked your small bag over your arm, before you clutched the plants and stepped off of the ledge.
The vines extending down towards the ground and taking you with it slowly as you held onto it tightly with shaking arms.
Stepping down onto the grass gently, you smiled and looked down. You couldn’t believe you were actually doing it, finally seeing the grass up close and feeling it under your feet.
You looked around, walking towards the small pond near you, lifting your dress and dipping your toes in that as the other three watched you in confusion.
You turned around quickly, spinning your face then with a large smile on your lips.
“Where are we going now?” You asked excitedly.
Readers is literally like Bambi istg 😭
This is not proof read sorry

Oh wow, I was not expecting a whole drawing of them trying the dance and falling around. It's very beautifully done, I rmmbr just staring in awe for a while at first 🩵
I have another odd question about the she trio/ass gang, which u don't have to draw
Cause I saw a little video of Harvey going hard; dancing to MiseryxCPR(xReese's Puffs) and it had me laughing for a long while, and I wondered who would be the ones singing the song if say the stardrop saloon had some kind of karaoke night
My head tells me both Sam and Abagail would end up doing Reeses's puffs, but that would leave one of the other songs without a host :/
Harvey would probably end up saying stuff about how cpr doesn't require mouth-to-mouth anymore or smthn, and Shane probably worried Marnie would walk in-or just, too drunk off his ass having fun to care 🤔
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
nah man i just have to draw them. and oh look I even have another essay under readmore! 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂
✨Also my commissions are open! ✨ if anyone is interested! :D< please reblog/share the og comm sheet ,if you can! it would help me a lot thank you!!!
Honestly i can imagine them all just being pissed drunk before attempting to sing the song😂. i know fersure the SHE trio would require more liquid courage for it (heck even to join/start a kareoke sesh!)
Shane gives of major Kareoke Tito (uncle) vibes~. Yknow that one tito who specifically sings “My Way” by Frank Sinatra and has a bunch of classic rock songs under his belt. He’s not good at singing perse but he can at least carry a tune. He and Sebastian would totally connect with singing Misery. but like Shane vaguely knows the song (he’s heard it on radio a bajillion times but he doesnt know the name of the song so its not quite on his playlists) so he when he’s super sloshed and can barely read the screen, he tries to sing it from memory and misses a couple of the words. but hey! at least he knows the chorus and is in tune.
Meanwhile Sebastian has Misery “secretly” on his go to playlist. He doesnt admit it (the songs is too main stream and overplayed but he stumbled upon a vocaloid cover and rest is history.) He definitely always chooses the song every kareoke sesh (although not his first choice) and he’s passionate about it even has a little performance too(lots of head bangs, fist pumps and that classic 2000s disney knees bent together, feet wide apart moment)! For his duet with shane he’s the first to shed a lil tear and that gets shane going and they cry through most of the song in their own lil misery world ignoring the chaos around them.
Sam is a fucking menace for singing CPR and I do agree He and Abigail would go off on Reese’s Puff BUT i can definitely imagine being commited to singing CPR (we all know he’d awkwardly twerk). Especially if it was to troll on Harvey who probably thought it was a wholesome song about doing CPR at a specific BPM. 😂
Harvey good lird poor harvey! He’s probably the most sober out of everyone. It doesnt help that he’s no light weight + lowkey becomes designated baby sitter everytime (he’s soooooooo going charge them extra in the morning if they come stumbling into his clinic asking for some hangover cure). He was so excited about adding a new song to CPR tempo list he was gonna teach at the nex first aid classes!! Who would have thought that a singer with a cute wholesome name like Cupcakke was just so… sooooo SCANDALOUS!!! He should have known Sam was up to something the moment he grabbed him by the shoulder!!! “This is medical malpractice, Samson!!!” He spends the whole trying to sush Sam who’s having so much fun laughing at Harvey’s reaction 😂
Abigal. F e r a l.
Help! Elliot has fallen over! He honestly just has a mild peanut allergy but he has been drinking and hooo boi. thats not good. thank goodness Harvey is sobered up (with the help of Sam ofc) and has an epipen on hand! Catch Leah cackling from her seat by the bar before assisting Harvey.

Can I request how Hideaki, Elliot, and Maeve met Reader?
First meeting (Yandere ocs x reader)
Tumblr media
I'm working on making headers for each of them so I don't have to use gifs as much, so look forward to that.
No warning other than reader doesn't have any tattoos, sorry.
---
Summer in New York sucked. It was hot, painfully so, to the point where it felt like your skin was constantly burning. It also stunk, like garbage and food and sweat. But more than the smell or the heat, summer sucked because of one person.
Maeve Leblanc.
Every summer he had auditions for new models. They'd flock from all over the world just for a chance to meet him. One of these models included your best friend and roommate, Jessica. She was obsessed with him, trying every year since first moving to New York to model for him.
"He's like...the best designers of our generation!" You remember her swooning one day during dinner. "Jay even works with him--you've seen him in stuff, right?" You nod your head.
"I've heard of him." You respond before taking a bite of your food. "But I don't think his shows really appeal to me..."
Jessica shakes her head "regardless, I just know this is the year." She nods her head, determined.
You believed in her just as much, you're honestly surprised she hasn't already been chosen to be one of his models. But if there was one thing holding her back, it was her forgetfulness.
Waking up in the morning to a barrage of texts for Jessica was not what you expected. It took you a few seconds to process what she needed, before signing. She forgot an outfit, apparently they needed to provide their own for the first few rounds of auditions.
So here you were, in front of the ginormous building, large letters displaying Fleur. You didn't know much about Maeve, but flowers were a common theme with him, if the rows and rows of them outside weren't already that much of a sign. You took a deep breath before entering, clothing bag gripped tightly purely out of nervousness.
The entrance was busy, model after model filling the room to the point where the noise was nearly unbearable. You tried looking around the room, finding someone who could tell you where auditions were being held, opting for one of the few front desks that weren't taken over by models.
"Excuse me--"
"If you're here for auditions, they're closed." The woman interrupted, looking you up and down very confused. You weren't exactly dressed to impress, in a baggy t-shirt and jeans with tennis shoes that were most likely a year old. "Come back tomorrow."
"I'm not here for auditions." You snapped back. "My friend forgot something and I need to give it to her, she's in the auditions."
The woman nodded, shifting on her feet a bit. "Okay well--I can't let you in if you're not auditioning so, sorry." You groan in disappointment, before nodding and leaving the desk.
This day couldn't get any worse, at this point you were planning on just texting Jessica and telling her to suck it up and try again next summer, before your plans were thwarted by someone rudely bumping into you.
"Oh my god! I'm so sorry--are you okay?" The person, a man judging by his voice, asks you. His hands were gripping your arms tight to keep you from falling, so the only thing you could do was look up and nod at him.
He wasn't that tall, which was surprising due to how hard he crashed into you. His dark hands were covered in tattoos, and you could even see a few peaking onto his neck. He definitely was attractive, but he didn't look like one of the models, wearing just a hoodie and some baggy jeans.
"Are you here for the auditions?" He asks you once you calm down a bit, letting you go finally.
You shake your head. "No, I'm here for a friend, she's the one auditioning." You hold up the bag of clothes to him. He looks confused for a few seconds before nodding, holding out his hand towards you with a smile.
"Well, I'm Elliot." You shake his hand, it was surprisingly warm.
"I'm (Y/n)." You introduce yourself.
"I'm also looking for a friend." He says, eyes darting around the entrance. "He works here, maybe he can help you?" He tilts his head at you. You shrug, it was worth a shot.
"Great!" He smiles, taking your hand again.
---
You and Elliot spend about twenty minutes looking for his "friend", how he refused to give any more descriptors other than "tall loud idiot." It felt like he was making this harder for no reason.
Eventually, you two sat down on a tucked away seating area, Elliot attempting to call his friend for the sixth time now. You would call Jessica to tell her what was going on, but her phone was turned off, so you were out of luck.
"I'm sorry about all of this, I know he's here, it's just--" Elliot rubs the back of his neck, clearly embarrassed.
You shake your head, smiling a bit. "It's fine, don't worry about it." He laughs lightly, smiling wide. He had a very pretty smile, it would've made you nervous if it weren't for the situation you were in.
"(Y/n)." Elliot asks suddenly. "Have you ever thought about getting a tattoo?" That was a strange question. You've honestly never thought about it that much, but a part of it scared you. Getting something permanently etched onto your body was a big commitment, you didn't know if you were ready for that yet.
"Uh--not really, I just don't think I'm brave enough to get one." You laugh awkwardly, a bit uncomfortable by the question.
"You definitely should." He responds. His eyes were locked onto you, making you feel small. "You have the skin for it." He says. "If you ever change your mind, I--"
"Elliot! Where have you been!" He's interrupted by someone behind you, causing you to turn around. In front of you was a tall, very upset man, storming towards you. He had fluffy black hair, very pale skin, and judging by his high end clothing, was one of the models here.
"What do you mean, Hideaki, I've been looking for you?!" Elliot shot up, forgetting the very strange conversation you were just having.
"I was in the upstairs dressing room, like always."
"I can't get to the higher floors, dumbass!"
"Wait--I thought I authorized you?"
"Authorization doesn't matter when there are auditions, we went over this, you have to be with me in person."
The entire time the two were arguing, you were trying to figure out where you'd seen the other guy before. He seemed so familiar, but you couldn't put your finger on it. Maybe he showed up at your work, or maybe you saw him online, like on instagram or something--
"Oh--you're Jay, man I knew I've seen you somewhere before." You gasp, interrupting their argument. Jay, or Hideaki as Elliot called him, furrowed his eyebrows. Elliot was holding back laughter as he peered at your satisfied face.
You should've recognized the actor and model immediately, Jessica watches nearly every show he's been in, she even managed to get his autograph at last year's auditions.
"Who is this?" Jay asks his friend.
"This is (Y/n), they're looking for their friend." Elliot smiled. "You're going to take us to the audition room as an apology for wasting our time." Jay looked annoyed, groaning as he rolled his eyes.
"Fineee--come on." He motioned for you to follow, moving towards the crowd of people. Elliot waited for you to stand up before taking your hand again.
"Thank you." You whisper to him. He doesn't respond, just smiling instead.
---
This was probably the biggest elevator you've ever been in. It was incredibly fancy with so many buttons, you're sure you would've gotten lost if it wasn't for Elliot and Jay.
Speaking of Jay, he's been on his phone the whole time you've been in this elevator, which has been a while due to the amount of people getting on and off. He seemed to be in his own world, which you didn't know was because of you or Elliot.
"(Y/n), you said your friend is auditioning, is this their first time?" Elliot speaks up in the quiet elevator. You can see Jay's eye shift over to you for a second, before going back to his phone.
"No, she's been auditioning now for about three years now." You answer. "I think she has a shot though, she's been working really hard."
Elliot nods "Well, tell her I wish her luck."
"She's gonna need it if this is her third year." Jay laughs from the side, causing you to look over at him with a raised eyebrow. "I'm just saying, it isn't easy to model for Maeve, trust me I know."
You decide not to mention that he never had to go through the auditioning process and was chosen by Maeve specifically, you didn't want to start drama, choosing to instead stay quiet.
Eventually, the elevator stops, opening up to a large open floor filled with models and clothes and makeup. It was crowded, but significantly quieter than the entrance. "Your friend should be in here." Jay says blankly. "Elliot come on." He calls.
"Give me a second--" Elliot looks over at you. "Sorry for all the trouble." He grabs your hand and places a small piece of paper in it. "My number--in case you change your mind about that tattoo. Or if you just want to talk." You looked at the paper for a second before looking back at him. He was smiling, wide and bright, and it made your heart jump in your chest.
"Yeah, will do." He nods, before heading back into the elevator with a wave.
As the elevator doors close, you can feel yourself becoming progressively more nervous. There were too many people, and you were starting to get more anxious around all these people.
"(Y/n)!" Thank god Jessica found you. You could see her stride over to you, engulfing you into a hug as she takes the bag from your hand. You're so happy she's here, that means you can leave soon.
"Thank you so much." She says. "I have to go and get changed--sorry to leave so soon."
You shake your head "It's fine, go try your best!" You shove her away playfully as you giggle.
The elevator felt like a breath of fresh air when you stepped into it. You wondered if you should message Elliot, or if it would be too sudden. How long should you even wait before talking to him? As you wrestled with this in your brain you barely even noticed when the door opened and someone walked in. You instinctively move to let him enter, eyes glued to your phone and the piece of paper.
The elevator was silent for the few moments after he entered, which you were perfectly fine with as you didn't feel like conversing with anyone.
"You're slouching." You look at the man, he was looking down at you already. "Don't do that."
The man's calm but powerful voice broke you out of your trance. You quickly fixed your posture before stuffing your phone in your pocket. You didn't dare look at the man, too embarrassed to see his face. It was like his presence was too overwhelming.
"Better." He says, his voice satisfied.
You stifle a confused groan before finding the small amount of courage in you to shift your gaze towards him. He was tall, extremely so. He was covered head to toe in designer clothing, with strawberry blond hair that framed his face perfectly.
You nearly choke on your own breath as you realize that you're in an elevator with Maeve Leblanc. One of the most famous people in the world, the whole reason thousands of people are here today, is in the same elevator as you and just told you to fix your posture. You don't know whether to be surprised or scared.
You waste no time shifting your gaze back to your feet, mentally praying that this elevator would hurry up. "Are you here to audition?" Why does he keep talking to you? You thought it was pretty obvious that you weren't auditioning, but apparently not.
"Uh--no, I was here for a friend." You answer quickly, eyes staying locked to the floor.
He hums lightly in understanding and you can feel his gaze shift onto you. Almost like something overtook you, you finally look at him completely, meeting his gaze for the first time.
His eyes were a deep blue, staring far into your soul. His face was captivating, even more so that it wasn't behind a t.v. screen. You felt bewitched by him, by his beauty, that you didn't notice the small amount of shock on his face. His eyebrows were furrowed as he looked back at you.
"You should." He said.
"Huh?" You gaped in confusion.
"Audition." He answers. "You should audition."
"Ha--" You laugh, trying to avoid the awkwardness. "Yeah--" Your voice draws out as you turn back to the ground, he couldn't be serious.
Eventually, the elevator dings, and you're greeted with the entrance and once again you can finally breathe. You leave the elevator, not failing to notice that Maeve doesn't leave, but his eye stays on you. He does, however, reach out his hand to stop the doors from closing.
"I'm serious" He says, making you turn and face him completely. "You should come tomorrow and audition." It didn't feel like a request, but more like a demand, like he was demanding you show up tomorrow. But even so, you just laugh while the door closed, sighing as he was finally out of view.
"What the fuck--"

A Safe Place (part 3) [day 18]
A feverish Cliff is seen in the emergency room. For @monthofsick Day 18 “Unfamiliar surroundings”. 2,965 words, original work, TWs emeto, hospital content.
Part 1 | Part 2 - I swear this was supposed to be 2 parts but now it’s gonna be 4? Lol whoops.
Elliot supported Cliff into the busy ER. It was a Saturday, of course there were a lot of people there, Elliot thought regretfully. Silly to hope otherwise. Elliot eased Cliff into a seat as close to the reception desk as possible and then checked Cliff in, presenting Cliff’s ID and health insurance card. He was grateful Cliff’s wallet and phone were the two things his boyfriend had actually brought with him when he left his parents’ house, although a jacket and his inhaler would have been useful third and fourth choices.
“What’s this visit for?” The receptionist asked after scanning the cards and handing them back to Elliot.
“My boyfriend is having trouble breathing,” Elliot said, hoping this concerned her as much as it concerned him. “He has asthma, he’s wheezing, and he has a high fever. He didn’t know who I was earlier.”
The receptionist stood up a little to catch a glimpse of Cliff in his seat, who did look like he was struggling. “Okay, we’ll get him triaged as soon as possible,” the receptionist said. Elliot chose to believe her for his own sanity’s sake. “In the meantime, have him wear a mask.”
Cliff sagged against Elliot when Elliot sat next to him. He was in no shape to do paperwork, so Elliot tried to fill it out as much as he could. Fifteen minutes passed. Cliff was whimpering in pain and his wheeze had grown louder. “Just a few more minutes, Cliffy,” Elliot said, hoping it wasn’t a lie. Thirty minutes passed. Cliff was now insisting he was fine after all, and that they ought to go home. But that was when he was lucid, which would last only a minute before he’d follow up by saying something that made very little sense and reminded Elliot exactly why they couldn’t leave. Finally, about forty minutes after they’d checked in, a nurse called Cliff’s name and brought them to a small room between the waiting room and the actual ER. Elliot repeated the story he’d given the receptionist although more aggressively this time as the nurse nodded and took Cliff’s vitals.
Elliot never wanted Cliff to be so sick. However, his vitals did prompt some action and for that Elliot was grateful. Cliff’s fever was 103.5 now, his oxygen running lower than expected at 92%, and his heart rate and blood pressure were both high. The nurse led them to a stretcher in a curtained off bay and told Cliff to change into a gown. Elliot had to help Cliff climb up, his boyfriend’s coordination poor. His hands were shaking too hard to button his own gown up, so Elliot did it for him.
“Don’t feel good,” Cliff mumbled, swaying even as he sat up on the stretcher.
“I know, just lie back,” Elliot said. “They’re gonna help you.”
Thankfully, this time they only waited about ten minutes before a new nurse came in with a small bucket full of supplies. She introduced herself as Anna and said she was going to insert an IV, take some blood, and hook Cliff up to oxygen and fluids. She was also going to swab Cliff for flu and strep, but Elliot explained the urgent care had already done that. “Well, this tests for some other stuff too, it’s a full respiratory panel. I’d recommend we just do it anyways.” Elliot agreed on Cliff’s behalf; Cliff seemed to be communicating only in nods at this point.
Nurse Anna looped some oxygen tubing over Cliff’s ears first and plugged it into the wall. She also attached a blood pressure cuff and oxygen probe that she said would stay on for now for monitoring. Elliot felt like all the devices only made Cliff look sicker. Anna swabbed Cliff’s nose, which made him cough harshly to the point of gagging, and then got ready to insert an IV.
Cliff looked to Elliot in panic, swallowing rapidly. ‘Faint,’ he mouthed to Elliot helplessly. “Um, I think he passes out when there’s needles,” Elliot spoke up for him. Cliff nodded gratefully.
“Well you’re in the right place if you do,” Nurse Anna said. She lowered the head of the stretcher and told Elliot to hold Cliff’s hand as she looked for a vein in his other arm. “I’ll go super quick,” she reassured them, and she was right. It was quick. But Cliff turned sheet white and got really sweaty and by the time she’d collected enough tubes of blood, flushed and secured the hub and hooked him up to a bag of fluids, Cliff was barely conscious. “Don’t worry, it happens,” she said. She put a pillow under Cliff’s legs and told him to breathe deeply through his nose. Elliot found her calm demeanor the only thing keeping him calm, because it seemed terrifying even if it was normal. Cliff followed her directions and eventually gained some color back. Anna said his blood pressure was coming back up and that he should just lie there with his feet up for a few more minutes, then left the room.
“I’m sorry,” Cliff apologized miserably for the tenth time since they’d come back here.
“Baby, please, stop apologizing,” Elliot told him. “You’re here because you have to be and you’re not doing anything bad or wrong. Just rest.”
Cliff’s eyes filled with tears and he covered them with his forearm. “I suck,” he whimpered, Elliot’s words clearly not having reached him as intended. Elliot sighed and put one hand on Cliff’s head to stroke his sweaty hair. It wasn’t worth fighting Cliff on this right now. Elliot just had to be there for him.
Cliff fell asleep to Elliot’s relief. Elliot texted his mom what was going on and hoped this wasn’t as bad as it felt. Cliff snored quietly until a woman came with a huge portable x-ray machine. “Sorry to wake you up,” she said, “Cliff? I’m here to get your x-ray. I’ll go fast.”
Cliff opened his eyes and stared blankly at her. Elliot wasn’t sure if Cliff knew what was going on at this point so he stroked Cliff’s arms and explained, “Cliff? She’s gonna take the pictures of your lungs now.” He helped the x-ray tech manipulate Cliff’s torso so that he was lying on a hard board. Elliot stood in the doorway while they did the films.
“Alright, take a nice deep breath for me and hold it,” the x-ray tech said. “I know, good job, got it. You can cough.” And cough Cliff did, that same desperate wet cough that had made Elliot’s mind up to bring him here. He managed to catch his breath, but it wasn’t over. “One more,” the tech said, moving the boards and machine around to point at Cliff’s side now. “Again. Deep breath. One, two, and good. Let it out.”
This time Cliff didn’t seem able to stop coughing. He coughed until each gasp sounded like a Herculean struggle and Elliot wasn’t sure that any of that air he was gulping in was actually reaching his lungs. The machine that was measuring Cliff’s oxygen levels started to beep and the tech told Elliot she was going to find the nurse. Elliot held on to Cliff and tried to soothe him, but it didn’t seem to work. Cliff just kept coughing until suddenly his eyes flew open and he spewed a sharp wave of vomit from his mouth all the way to the end of the stretcher. Elliot winced, pulling back and trying not to look at the mess. Cliff spluttered and coughed between additional harsh gags that produced little besides a stream of thick brown saliva that pooled in his lap. Elliot prayed the nurse would come in soon and hesitantly rubbed Cliff’s back. He didn’t know what to do and Cliff seemed frozen, unable to lift his head or close his mouth.
Thankfully the nurse showed up then and said, “Oh no!” Oh no was right, Elliot thought anxiously. “Did we just get coughing too hard?” She glanced at Cliff's oxygen levels and turned a small green dial on the wall, which made a quiet hissing noise for a second as the flow of oxygen increased. “Don’t worry hun, we’re going to get you cleaned up.” She found a change of sheets in one of the cupboards behind the stretcher and changed the blankets and top sheet in record time. She checked Cliff’s fluids which were nearly done and then charted standing in the room for a few minutes on her rolling computer.
Cliff was silent, hunched over holding a pink plastic basin in his lap in case of another incident, and Elliot couldn’t tell if he was just out of it or humiliated. The room still smelled of putrid stomach acid; Elliot breathed through his mouth. His phone dinged in his pocket and he saw an alarmed text from his mother. He didn’t have time to reply though, as the doctor walked in at that moment.
“Doctor Jim,” Anna greeted him politely, scooting her computer farther away from the bedside. “He just threw up coughing and I turned up his oxygen.”
“I’m not surprised,” Dr. Jim said. He looked to be in about his forties, was mostly bald and had tiny round glasses that looked too small for his face. “Cliff? I’m Jim, I’m a physician here. How are you doing today?”
Elliot thought that was a stupid question. Cliff looked at Dr. Jim with hazy eyes and mumbled, “Sick.”
“Well, that makes sense. You’ve got yourself a nasty case of double pneumonia,” Dr. Jim said. Elliot’s heart sank. “Has this ever happened to you before?”
Cliff shook his head no. He moved his hand to the edge of the bed that Elliot understood as a silent signal to hold it, which he did. “Well, I think it’s best if we admit you for observation overnight with the vitals you have. I’m going to order two IV antibiotics and some steroids, try and get that swelling down in your lungs and hopefully you’ll be feeling better in no time. How’s that sound?”
Cliff didn’t answer. “That sounds fine,” Elliot said, squeezing Cliff’s hand. “Can I stay with him?”
“Once we move him to the floor, visiting hours are eight to eight,” Dr. Jim said. “But you can stay with him for as long as he’s in the ER.” He turned to Anna and gave a few other orders for Zofran, Tylenol, albuterol and budesonide treatments. It all seemed so casual to them, but Elliot was still disturbed by how sick Cliff looked and seemed to him.
Dr. Jim physically examined Cliff next. Cliff shuddered and Dr. Jim apologized for his cold hands, but Elliot knew that the temperature hadn’t had anything to do with it. He hummed a lot, wrote down some notes, and then left with a “Hope you feel better soon.” Elliot wondered if he told all his patients that, or just the ones who could actually get better soon. Nurse Anna also excused herself to get the ordered medications, leaving Elliot alone with Cliff once again.
“So… pneumonia. That sounds pretty bad,” Elliot said. “Why didn’t you tell me you felt so sick?”
“You were at work. I didn’t want to bother you,” Cliff said in a tiny voice. “And then I tried to text you but none of the letters in my phone made sense.”
Elliot felt his chest clench painfully hearing that. “Cliff, you wouldn’t have bothered me.”
“But I’m bothering you now,” Cliff whimpered.
Elliot frowned. “I didn’t say that.” Silence from Cliff. Elliot sighed and grasped Cliff’s hand in his own. “Cliff, Cliffy, can you look at me?” It took a second, but fever-bright, hazel eyes eventually focused on Elliot. “You’re my boyfriend. I want you to be okay. Can you at least try to trust me?”
“I do trust you,” Cliff whispered, voice hurt.
“Then let me care about you.”
Cliff fell quiet again and Elliot sat back but kept Cliff’s hand in his. Cliff had his eyes closed, but it didn’t do much to hide the tears that escaped from the corners of them. Elliot didn’t say anything, just brushed them off of Cliff’s cheeks with his sleeve. Once Cliff was asleep, Elliot finally allowed his own silent tears to fall.
Eventually a CNA came to bring Cliff down to the short-stay unit. She rolled Cliff’s stretcher down the hall and into an elevator. Cliff looked nervous and kept glancing at Elliot, making sure he was still right next to him. Elliot always was. They got to a small room that had a real hospital bed in it and the CNA and Elliot both helped Cliff take two steps from the stretcher onto the bed. It was painful for Elliot to see how difficult even this brief transfer was for Cliff, and Cliff started another one of his long coughing spasms afterwards. Elliot rubbed Cliff’s arm, unsure what else he could possibly do to help. “Water,” Cliff croaked hoarsely between deep, rattling coughs.
“Sure. Um…” Elliot looked around him but this room was barely more than an ER bay. It didn’t even have windows. “Let me go check,” he said, and went to go look for the nurse’s station. There were two tired and rather bored looking, middle aged women sitting at computers at the end of the hall. “Excuse me? My boyfriend just got here and he could use some water…”
“I’m almost there,” one of the nurses said, which Elliot thought was a weird thing to say when she very much wasn’t almost there. Regardless, they didn’t seem to like him hovering very much so Elliot went back to Cliff’s room. There was nowhere for him to sit, so he stood at the bedside. Cliff had managed to stop coughing at least.
The nurse, despite her indifferent demeanor, did show up with a little bin that contained hospital socks, meds and a large plastic jug of water. “Clifford Barrows, hmm? I’m Carey. And you are…?” She raised an eyebrow at Elliot.
Suddenly feeling extra protective, Elliot quickly said, “His boyfriend.”
“Alright. Mr. Barrows, are you okay to have Elliot in here?”
Cliff nodded a yes. Elliot thought it was so weird to hear Cliff called by his last name. They seemed too young for that.
“Well, your boyfriend will have to leave after I finish this admission paperwork as visiting hours are over soon, but remind me to get you a chair for tomorrow,” Carey said. She started a myriad of questions, which included Cliff’s emergency contact.
“Make it Elliot,” Cliff said quickly, looking at him. “Um, will my dad know I’m here?”
“You’re eighteen, right? Not unless you tell him,” Carey said. “But I see your dad is the primary insurance holder so he may see the invoice after you’re discharged. It shouldn’t show any details though.”
Cliff grimaced but nodded. At least there would be no confrontation in the actual hospital, Elliot thought to himself. Carey kept asking questions, which ranged from did Cliff smoke to could he walk up a flight of stairs to did he have any plans to hurt himself right now. They seemed a little ridiculous to Elliot, but Cliff was able to answer all of them with simple yes’s and no’s pretty quickly since he was for the most part entirely healthy.
“You’re easy,” Carey said, winking at Cliff. “Boyfriend? Visiting hours are over now honey, so you say your goodbyes and you can come back at 8am tomorrow morning.” Elliot thought she was kind of like those old ladies at diners who yelled at you for your order but called you honey so you couldn’t feel totally attacked.
He nodded and gave Cliff a quick hug. He thought about kissing him, but Cliff didn’t like to be kissed in front of other people so he just squeezed Cliff’s hand instead. “I’ll be back in the morning,” he promised. “Get some rest and tell them if you don’t feel good, okay?”
“Okay,” Cliff said. He looked scared, so Elliot hugged him again and kissed the top of his head this time.
“I love you,” Elliot said. “I know you can be strong for me. You’ve got your phone right here.”
Elliot didn’t look back as he left, because he could feel Cliff’s kicked puppy expression trailing him and knew if he did, it would be ten times harder to leave. He walked to the parking lot without thinking, got in his car, and drove home without Cliff beside him. He made it to the park a block away from his parents’ house before he pulled over and cried for a solid ten minutes.
Cliff was going to be okay, Elliot told himself. Cliff was stronger than he seemed, and realistically Elliot couldn’t be there for him every second of the way. But he’d promised Cliff they weren’t going to the hospital, and then he promised Cliff that he’d be right there next to him the whole time. He’d broken both of these promises and now Cliff was sleeping in a hospital bed, in a tiny room with no windows and only a crotchety old lady to keep an eye on him. Elliot felt just terrible and wondered if he’d made the wrong choice dragging Cliff to the ER. All he wanted was for Cliff to be okay, though, and he really hadn’t seemed okay today.
Elliot wiped his tears away and told himself he had to be strong. This seemed so intense and adult, but Elliot couldn’t let it overwhelm him. He tried to remember the coping mechanisms his therapist had taught him back in high school. Deep breaths. One second at a time. He could do it, and so could Cliff. Elliot turned on the car and returned home by himself.

WIP of my SECOND favorite rarepair from Stardew. As an opposites-attract fan, it's no surprise that I sometimes swoon for these two!
Back when I wrote "Slim to None", I had to make a brand new tag for Elliot/Maru on AO3, because they are even rarer than Penny and Seb, and I think for more reasons than the obvious ones.
It's clear they aren't alike. Left brain vs. right brain. Logical vs. Creative Scientific vs. Artistic. Straightforward vs. Poetical. You get the idea.
But the more I think about these two, the more interesting their dynamic becomes.
Because I strongly believe that people like Elliot, who are extremely expressive and artistic, tend to be easily burdened by their own deep feelings - especially when they don't know how to show these feelings to someone they profoundly care about, because they want it to be conveyed perfectly and beautifully.
While people like Maru who are more pragmatic, logical and practical, may not be very receptive of romantic expression initially - especially the elaborate and flowery kind of affection that Elliot would probably try to offer her.
But I imagine what's going through Maru's mind is 'He's just doing it to be nice.' Basically trying not to fall harder for him than she already has, because she's already done the premature damage control in her brain, rejecting herself on behalf of him, so not to get hurt.
Because allowing yourself to fall in love is scary, right? Especially in the case where it turns out the one you feel deeply for, feels nothing for you in return.
So, Maru tried to resign herself, chipping away her own fondness for him (Which only sort of worked when he wasn’t around). Love had zero applicable positive in her life. Her unearthed feelings had the potential to seriously encumber the way she's systematically ordered her life, and that is a serious problem for someone like her.
Plus, Elliot would never go for someone like me, right? She convinces herself, What gorgeous, sophisticated man in their right mind would pick the scrappy girl with machine grease spatters on her face and arms, when he could have anyone he wanted?
Little does she know (because she refuses to believe it herself), the more Elliot spends time with her, the less capable he is of stopping himself from thinking about her. His mind was consumed. Countless hours lying in bed, staring at the ceiling wondering how she was doing. If she had any interest at all in the book he was writing, or if she would find it boring and dull... What it would take to get her to not avert her eyes when she glanced his way.
"I just like her..." He whispered plainly to himself, somewhat humiliated that he couldn't formulate a better way to say it.
Not that he didn't try.
All the articulations he mustered to piece together, it seemed as if all the poetry and literature the world had to offer would fall short, unable to capture the weight that rested squarely on his heart when his mind simply drifted to her – as it so often did now. His words are far too inadequate to covey his insurmountable feelings.
This is displayed in his canon ten heart event. For a man who is usually suave and elloquant with his speech, Elliot fumbles over what he's tries to say; "Um... [Player]... How do I say this?" "N-no! I'm not saying I want to cut all ties with you!" "... Let's see, how do I put this...?"
Never had he been at such a loss for words as he was during Maru's 8 heart event. Standing in front of Maru. Alone with her in her room. Letting her carefully apply burn cream to his hand after her project demonstration didn’t exactly go as planned.
“That kind of ruined the moment, huh?” She sighed with glistening eyes and flush cheeks, clearly very disappointed in herself.
He’d said hardly anything since he’d even arrived. What could he say? He knows nothing of this stuff… Regardless, now was the time. It had to be! Even if he didn’t exactly know how he was going to say it, he couldn’t conceal his appreciation for her any longer.
Instead of gracelessly blurting out his feelings, he chokes his inadequate words down, stepping forward, aching to simply hold Maru in a perfect moment. Longing for her to carry his bursting heart in her palm. To inspect and refurbish his yearning spirit as she would a malfunctioning gadget or broken machine.
"You, uh," Maru tenses, blushing deeply as he does so, taking a small step back, "You don't have to do that." She chuckles awkwardly, knowing he couldn't possibly...
His heart palpitated wildly as he pulled away, unable to keep himself from feeling hurt and embarrassed by her unexpected rejection, "Maru...?"
"I know gadgets aren't really your kind of thing.." Maru's voice trembled as she looked away, "And I do appreciate that you're showing interest in what I do... but you don't have to overdo it. I mean, thank you for humoring me, but, especially after that… You've already done enough...."
All his hope and desire clattered to the ground. Practically drowning in his own confusion and humiliation, a small moment passed as Elliot's mind began to spin with all the details that lead up to this moment. All the looks Elliot caught her sneaking his way, the way she grew bashful when talking to him about herself, how he could have sworn she was about to ask him to dance with her at the flower festival this year, but never did. The way even just now, how blithely she invited him in to her room to show him what she’d been working on.
After all that?
Determined not to let it end here, Elliot gingerly took either side of Maru’s face, prompting her to look deeply and directly into his eyes. A single word fell from his lips...
"No." Elliot hushed, pupils dancing back and forth between hers.
Maru's brow crinkled.
He repeated himself, "No. I have not done enough." With a light shake of his head and a breezy chuckle, "In fact, I've hardly done anything for you at all."
She again averted her eyes, "Elliot, y-"
Cutting her off, Elliot insistently pulled her face back, tilting his head to meet her eyes again, firm and intentional. The words that he had were simple, yet inspired, "No, Maru... Not enough."
Elliot's soft expression and lowered voice was enough to make Maru's eyes mist. He seemed so genuine; she couldn't find any way around the cold hard fact that faced her in this moment. There was no answer key or user's manual for this kind of thing, there were too many variabls in the equations. But right now with her face cradled in his palms, Maru couldn't calculate (or re-calculate) this moment to equal anything less than the total of what it all added up to;
Elliot adored her.
A smile bloomed on Elliot's face, repeating himself yet again, “No… Not enough.” wrapping his arms around her once more, "Not even close."
Tumblr media
OR Maybe it's not that deep and I just think they'd be cute together :) Thanks for reading my headcanon ramblings.
Side note: it's supposed to be a heart floating off of Elliot in the doodle of them kissing, but instead it looks like someone threw a pretzel at him and it bounced off his jacket 🥨😂

Note
tell us more about the death note/h2o crossover please 👀
Warning, tiny bit of dark content near the end. But like, it's death note sooo...
Characters:
Rikki = Light
Emma = L
Cleo = Misa
Lewis = Matsuda
Miriam = Kiyomi
Zane = Mikami
Kim = Sayu
Elliot = Near, Mello, Matt
Miss Chatham = Ryuk
Now, despite character assignments I'm still giving cannon siblings. So Sayu is still Light's little sister, the wammy boys are L's etc. The roles are based off of personality, so not everything fits and I'll move things around. Like yeah, Ryuk is Chatham because him as a weird old ocean man with ominous advice is hysterical.
Plot:
Starts of pretty similar, will diverge.
Light and Misa go to high school at the Gold Coast, Australia. Light's mother is a marine biologist that works at a nearby institute, while his father still works in Japan as the chief of the NPA.
Misa lives there with her parents, and is close with Light. Ie, she follows him around and he puts up with her. She is also good friends with Matsuda, who studies with her occasionally.
L is the new transfer kid, who Light doesn't like because he keeps on challenging his intellect. Plus he's weird.
So of course Light gets put in a group biology project with him, along with Misa.
While brainstorming where to research, L asks about Mako Island. Light says the Island and the waters around it are too dangerous. L (in essence) calls him chicken.
That weekend, the two, and an unwilling Misa, take Sachiko's boat out to Mako. And the gas tank leaks. So, they row the short rest of the way to Mako.
Of course, there's no phone service, and no one will look for them until after the weekend. Light and L bicker on the beach until Misa makes them go setup camp on the shore, then look for higher ground to try and get reception.
While looking, Misa falls in a hole. L goes in to help her. Light falls into trying to lend them the rope. Stuck down there, they look for an exit, and find the moon pool.
After oooing and aweing, they figure out the pool is connected to the ocean due to tidal rings. They plan to swim out after L scopes it out. Problem, Misa can't swim.
But after encouraging words and promises to help her, they all get in the pool as the full moon rises over the mouth of the volcano.
Weird bubbles happen.
But they ignore it, swimming out to the ocean and back to their camp near shore, getting dry and going to sleep.
The next morning they go into the shallow water to look for samples for their project since they have nothing else to do.
And they all turn into fish.
They freak, Misa screams, it's a mess. They all crawl onto shore to try and figure this out, and as soon as they're dry, they turn back to normal.
Misa refuses to touch water again. L needs time to process what just happened. But Light, the little getter he is, goes for a swim.
And he loves it, it's the most awesome swimming experience he's ever had. Way better than swimming as a clumsy human. He convinces L, then Misa, and after they all start to get used to their tails, they're having the time of their lives.
Now, they can push the boat back to the mainland, and say that "luckily" the gas tank leaked right as they were getting back.
They get what they need for the project, and like the dorky 16 year olds they are, swear a pact to never tell anyone about this.
(Touta finds out a week later when Misa tried to go to a pool party.)
Miscellaneous/Plot Points
Misa shows up at school the following day in total beach girl aesthetic, including beach curls, shell/pearl jewelry, flowy clothes and wedges. L nearly smacks her upside the head. Light does.
They turn the moon pool into their own little hangout! Misa gets them all to buy fairy lights, tapestries, blankets, pillows, and even shelves for all of their stuff, along with a crap ton of batteries for the lights. It turns out surprisingly cozy.
They all hang out a lot for obvious reasons, which puts a chip in Kiyomi and Teru's shoulder. They've tried to be close to Light to no avail, but suddenly this L guy, and Misa who is now more than tolerated, are suddenly thick as thieves with him! They get bitchy with the two, especially L.
Misa made them all fishing net pouch-belts to put cool things they find during swims in.
The pool starts to look like a little treasure trove, since there is a LOT of cool stuff to find and the bottom of the ocean.
With the sheer amount of pearls and mother of pearl they find, Light starts to make accessories out of it. Misa is overjoyed and accepts the items with joy. L likes to watch Light tinker. Light doesn't mind him there.
The three, especially Light develop a superiority complex in regards to other people. It's based in insecurity about not being human anymore, but they do feel superior because of their powers.
L goes research nuts. A large portion of the moon pool wall looks like a mermaid conspiracy board, he wants to find any possible explanation. Light helps where he can, impressed with L's brain.
L was the first to find his powers, when he froze Kiyomi and Mikami to a wet sidewalk. Next was Light, after he boiled his annoying history teachers coffee all over his desk. Misa found her power a few days after, accidentally flooding her bathroom when she tried to bath.
The first full moon was... not good. Ryuk randomly showed up at the beach to warn Light, who discarded his words as meaningless blabbering. The three of them went moon crazy, and swam in the ocean until Misa got caught in an illegal fishing boat net.
The next morning, the boat was found sunken and destroyed, the charred and frozen bodies of the small were found with it.
None of them swam for three days.
But uh, yeah! They're a little pod, very protective of eachother :)
Misa likes to find starfish that match their hair colours and stick them on the boys' hair. They don't come off :)
It's the wammy boys that notice something up (they including Sayu are 10 btw) and they end up finding some of L's research. Watari just said it was probably a hobby when they showed him, but when they go to Sayu and they find a type of shell that is only found at diving depth in Light's room, they begin to think their theory of mermaids is warranted.
The trio is annoyed by the snoopyness, and now that they were technically murderers there was another level of urgency to keep this secret.
Unfortunately, mermaid hunters and scientists do start showing up, as "sitings" have increased due to underwater cameras.
Stakes rise and the three begin to ponder the benefits of staying. And the risks of going.
They start sabotaging. Finding the groups, their plans and evidence under the guise of mermaid enthusiasts. It works mostly, except for one group that keeps coming back. L finds himself impressed with how easily Light can manipulate them.
The three start going farther away during swims, able to go to places like Fiji or the Mediterranean in under an hour due to their extraordinary tails.
There is relationship drama. Misa is realizing her crush on Light is going no where, and he and L have started to become closer. Eventually they get over it, but lawlight is end game.
Kiyomi's jealousy deflates over time, and she begins to appreciate Misa without Light clouding her mind ;)
That's all for now I think! BTW, blue tails for mermen isn't on a whim, it's cannon in the h2o sequel Mako mermaids :)

IV.
“I cannot believe we actually made it.” Mia gripped your hand excitedly, her acrylic nails digging painfully into your skin.
“Girl, hold my hand any tighter and you’ll crush my bones. I won’t have a hand to collect my diploma with.” You giggled softly, prying her fingers off the back of your hand so you could lace your fingers together instead, her sweaty palm pressing against yours.
“Sorry.” She replied and you squeezed her hand in response. “I’m just so nervous, can you believe after all our hard work, we’re finally here?”
“I know.” You sighed, looking out into the audience of family members and friends that were filling into the giant cathedral to watch and support their loved ones on one of the most important days of their lives. You and Mia had finally come to the end of your degrees, and today would encapsulate the last four years of all nighters and countless assignments. You were graduating with a Master’s degree in fashion design and marketing, Mia in medical neuroscience with psychology. As well as saying goodbye to your university, you were both parting ways with the city too, leaving Marseille for Paris early the following morning. During your final year, your main project was to put on your own fashion show, making the pieces as well as being responsible for promoting and marketing the event. You didn’t sleep for several weeks, but it had all been worth it because the show was a huge success, landing you the highest grade in your cohort as well as a job waiting for you at Louis Vuitton, whom having interned for them the summer before, and after your show being such a hit, offered you a place at their headquarters in Paris. Mia had also secured a fellowship in one of the biggest hospitals in the country, working with their research department on new treatments and cures and finding the causes for all sorts of illnesses to do with the brain that she had tried to explain to you but had gone completely over your head. All you understood was that it was incredibly competitive and very hard to get into, so you were extremely proud of her, and very excited to start this new chapter of your young adult lives together. You had already leased an apartment to share, and moved almost all your stuff over during the summer break. It was now a matter of starting to unpack and make it more of a home when you both returned to Paris for the last time in less than 24 hours.
“Ouuu I see Elliot!” Mia squealed, waving her hand that wasn’t holding yours excitedly. “He’s with our parents, come on, let's go and say hi before grad starts.” She stood up, dragging you down the small steps where the choir would usually be during mass, instead, today, it was where the graduates were to be seated during the graduation ceremony. She pulled you through the aisle, mumbling a few excuse me’s as you weaved through the sea of people talking to each other, the atmosphere electrified with excitement and anticipation for the upcoming ceremony.
“Mommy, Daddy!” Mia's smile grew wider as she hugged her parents tightly. Her parents had moved to London when she was 14, her dad’s hotel business was expanding and he’d started to branch out into the rest of Europe. Mia was supposed to have gone with them but she didn’t want to move to England, and after a lot of bargaining, she’d managed to agree with her parents that she’d live with her grandmother instead, hence how you became friends, she had moved to Bondy late into the school year and the only spare seat in your form tutor was next to you and the rest was history. Unfortunately, Mia’s grandmother had passed away just before she was due to start university, and since she was officially an adult, her parents let her stay in France. She’d fly out to see them regularly but it had been a while since she last saw them, and they’re very busy people so you knew she was very pleased to have them here and you’re glad they could show up for her.
You hugged your own parents, your dad clicking at his camera repeatedly, making sure he had enough photos to commemorate this occasion.
“Dad, I don’t even think I’m in the frame in the one you just took.” You laughed at him, as he squinted behind the lens.
“Close enough! I’m so proud of you, my sweet baby girl.” He leant over to kiss your cheek before walking off, muttering about finding someone to take a group photograph.
“You know I don’t think he made such a fuss when I was graduating.” Elliot appeared by your side, his hand reaching up to grab your cap, to remove it so he could ruffle your hair. You ducked under his arm, knowing exactly what he was trying to do and pushed him away from you.
“Don’t you dare El, I was up at 6 this morning doing my hair, you’re not messing it up!” You scowled. “And besides, we both know I’m mum and dad’s favourite.” You added. A smug smile spread across your face as you shrugged your shoulders.
“Whatever,” he rolled his eyes. “At least I’m the smart one, all you do is play with pretty fabric all day.” Elliot had graduated with a degree in sports science the year before, ending up at PSG, working as part of their medical staff. From what he had told you, he was really enjoying himself, and it probably helped that it was the same team Kylian played for, those two together, you were sure they were putting the other PSG players and staff members through hell.
“You know without people like Y/N, the rest of us would have nothing to wear, you’d be naked right now.” Mia slid up to Elliot, her arm wrapping around his waist as his went over her shoulder and squeezed it.
“I know you wouldn’t complain about that.” He replied.
“Mmmm, probably not.” She looked up at him, pursing her lips as he reached down to kiss her.
“Ew, the both of you. Please, I’m literally standing right here.”
They both laughed, pulling away just as your dad returned, some poor 20-something looking boy in his stead, holding the camera.
“Where’s Marco? Is he not coming?” Elliot asked, craning his head around to see if he could spot your boyfriend.
“Um…he’s in Tokyo. We broke up.”
Ex-boyfriend.
“Oh shit, sorry sis. What hap-“
“Group photo everyone, quick together!” Your dad interrupted his sentence, and you were thankful for his extraness in that moment, not wanting to answer any questions about your break-up. Your dad ushered you, your mum, Elliot, Mia and her parents into a huddle. It took a couple of minutes to organise everybody, your dad was kind of a perfectionist; it’s probably where Elliot got it from. You were stood between Mia and your mum, your brother behind the both of you. You turned to face him and from the look in your eyes and the way your lip turned downward slightly, he knew what you were going to ask, the issue of Marco long forgotten. Someone else was on your mind now.
“He’s going to be here Y/N. He might be a bit late, but he’ll be here.”
“He didn’t come down with you?”
“I had to pick Mum and Dad up so we got a later flight, he said he’d make it down himself. He wouldn’t miss this. I’m sure he’s on his way.”
You nodded, as you turned back to the boy holding the camera, mustering up the biggest smile you could, trying to ignore the way your heart felt so heavy in your chest and the sudden way your gown started to feel stuffy and uncomfortable. You and Kylian weren’t on bad terms, in fact, you were great. It had been almost three years since you’d decided to take a step back from him, and focus on yourself and who you were outside loving him. Not to say you stopped loving him, you don’t think that was something you’d ever be able to do, but you’d reached a point where he wasn’t all you thought about and it didn’t dictate everything you did and consume your entire being. You’d even managed to date someone this year, your first official boyfriend, Marco, for about 10 months, until he had to move to Japan for a student exchange transfer and you’d mutually decided to end things while you were on a good note because long distance for a whole year was not worth it; you’d remained friends though. You liked him a lot, but you didn’t love him, which was one of the reasons why he’d also agreed, howbeit reluctantly, to break up before his transfer, he’d told you he loved you 2 months prior and you were still yet to say it back. He had wanted to stay for you, but you encouraged him to go, not wanting to hold him back, especially when his feelings were so strong for you and yours were…well, not as strong. You didn’t want to disappoint him if you still couldn’t commit several months down the line and he’d thrown his future away for you.
“Graduates please make your way to your assigned seats, the ceremony will begin in 5 minutes.”
You and Mia hugged your families one more time before making your way back towards the stage. Your phone buzzed in your hand as you sat down, bringing it up to your face.
“Kylian?” Mia asked, her inquisitive nature causing her to lean over your shoulder and read the text on your phone.
“Ouuuu Marcoooo.” She sang teasingly as sat back and unlocked her own phone.
Hey, I know we’re not together anymore, but you’re still my friend so I wanted to wish you luck today! ♥️ proud of you always
Thank you Marco 🥺 I really appreciate it. How’s Japan treating you?
It’s amazing. The culture is just wow. And the sushi DEFINITELY tastes better here. You’d love it.
Your fingers hovered over the keyboard, ready to type out a reply when he sent another message.
I miss you.
You heard Mia wince audibly next to you, obviously reading the conversation between you and Marco.
“Get your big ass head out of my business.” You bumped your shoulder against hers as you sent Marco a quick reply about the ceremony starting so you had to go, not at all in the mood to unpack what that “I miss you” meant.
“Shame. I liked Marco. He was good for you.”
“Mmmm.”
“At least he congratulated you, better than that idiot your brother calls a best friend.”
“Ky’s our best friend too. And I thought you were on his side? Team KyY/N?”
“That was two years ago Y/N. He couldn’t even be bothered to send you a message about not coming.”
“El said he’d be here.”
“You think so?”
“I told him about today personally. He promised me he’d be here. For the both of us.”
“Oh we both know which one of us he’s coming for. And honestly I couldn’t give a fuck if he shows up for me, no offence. But for you? I’m skinning him alive the second we get to Paris.”
“He’ll be here.” You whispered to no one, almost as though you were trying to convince yourself. He had given you his word he wouldn’t miss today when you’d called him a few months ago about it. Initially you thought it might be weird, speaking to him on the phone, since you’d only been texting recently, but the thing about you and Kylian is no matter how much time you spent apart, you never fail to fall right back into your usual stead of things.
You hadn’t seen him since your birthday at the end of January, where there’d been a sort of awkward moment when you’d introduced him to Marco, who then had been your official boyfriend for a couple of weeks. He had just gotten back together with Renee, they had been together since your little confrontation at the airport two years back when you’d told him to focus on her. They had been on and off since they’d started dating, from what you’ve seen in the media, Kylian never really talked to you about her. From what you’d read over the course of the years, they’d broken up a couple of times, not that you cared or were keeping count.
******
He picked up after 3 rings, his face filling the screen when he answered. You gave him a little wave and a smile spread across his features, his dimples greeting you.
“Y/N. Hey.”
“Hi!” You replied, your voice chirpier than you’d expected it to be.
“You okay? Did something happen?”
He must’ve noticed the way you anxiously chewed at your bottom lip, your telltale sign something was wrong or you were nervous. In a similar way, he would squeeze his eyebrows together and his nose would twitch involuntarily when he was feeling the same. The harder he scrunched his eyebrows, the less nervous he was, the increased frequency of frown lines strewn across his forehead meant he was more likely to be angry instead. You knew each other’s tics and tells, probably better than you knew your own. By logic you and Kylian should’ve worked, you complemented and contrasted each other in the most perfect ways, but for some reason, the universe didn’t seem to agree and rather preferred to have the two of you in constant awkward situations and miscommunications leading to petty arguments. It was a quite cruel joke to be honest.
“Um, no, everything’s fine, I’m good. I was just wondering what you were doing August 1st.”
“Hmmm, the league starts again the week after that I’m sure, so just training.”
“Or nothing, if that’s what you need me to be doing.” He added and you couldn’t help the way your heart fluttered a little bit his words.
“Well Mia and I are finally graduating on the 1st. My parents and Elliot will be there. I was wondering if you wanted to come-“
“I’ll be there.”
“Really?” He laughed at your response.
“Gummy, you’ve wanted to be a fashion designer for as long as I’ve known you. I remember when you took it upon yourself to be mine and El’s stylists in middle school, I don’t even know why I let you do that, you used to put me in the most ridiculous outfits.”
“All you wanted to wear to school was your football kit.” You rolled your eyes. “I was trying to broaden your horizon a little bit.”
“Even then, you had talent, I can’t even imagine what you’re able to do now.”
“Well not to brag, but I am on track to finish top of my class.”
“Didn’t expect anything less from my girl.” He smiled genuinely and heat rose rapidly to your cheeks as you looked away from him for a moment.
“Of course I want to be there for you. But are you sure you’re 100% about it? Not to brag, but I am kind of a hotshot on the football scene right now.” He mocked, using your words against you playfully.
“Oh shut up!”
He laughed again, before continuing.
“I’m serious though Y/N, I know you like to stay out of the limelight and stuff, I don’t want to ruin that for you or steal attention away. This isn’t a private party like your birthday.”
“I want you there Ky, I want everyone I love there. I’ll be okay.” You nodded. Just then, you heard your boyfriend call out from your bedroom, his voice growing louder as he neared you in the kitchen.
“You ready babe?” He wrapped his arms around your waist, pressed a kiss against your cheek when he noticed you were on the phone.
“Oh hey man!” He waved at the screen. “How are you doing Kylian!”
“Hey…Marco. I’m good.” The smile on Kylian’s face dropped briefly as he greeted your boyfriend with a slight grimace. You quirked your eyebrow, wondering what the hell that was about but now it was his turn to break eye contact, looking everywhere but at you and Marco.
“How’s Renee?”
“Ummm she’s good. We’re…good.”
“Still can’t believe this guy is dating the biggest supermodel in the world, very fitting.”
You scowled, turning to face Marco, his comment grating on you a little bit.
“As opposed to you dating what?” You questioned, daring him to say some more bullshit.
“The hottest, smartest, kindest girl in the world of course.”
“Hmmm, better be.”
“How did you deal with her quick temper all your life Kylian?” Marco asked, and you elbowed his rib in response.
“You see what I mean?” He laughed, walking away from you. Kylian didn’t even bat an eye, he looked like he wanted to be anywhere else in the world at that moment.
“So anyways-“ You started but Kylian interrupted you, the words tumbling out of his mouth faster than you could register them.
“I gotta go. But I’ll be there August 1st. You have my word.”
“Oh, okay, yeah sure. Say hi to Renee for me.” You had barely managed to get out before he ended the FaceTime abruptly.
******
That was the last time you’d spoken, save the occasional text, but not once had he mentioned he wouldn’t be able to make it to your graduation. So by the time the ceremony was done and you had collected your diploma and walked down the aisle to cheers from your family, received more congratulations and took even more pictures and said your goodbyes to your family, to say you were simply pissed off was a great understandment. Some fool had even thought it would be funny to do Kylian’s infamous goal celebration in front of the cameras before collecting his diploma which amused everyone in the cathedral but vexed you even more. Kylian had always been there for you, he’s always tried his best to be present when you needed him, this was one of very few times he hadn’t shown up for you. But it hurt still, this was probably the most important thing you’d needed him for, and he’d not even bothered to shoot you a text he would be a no show.
“I know for sure he got on that plane Y/N.” Elliot had tried to reassure you earlier when you’d walked him and your parents to the Uber they had booked to take them back to the airport.
“Well that means fuck all to me. He’s not here.”
“Gosh he’s such an idiot. I’m going to skin him alive when I see him.”
“Funny your girlfriend said the same thing.” You laughed, but not really feeling humoured in the slightest. “Don’t worry about it El, I don’t know why I expected any different from him.”
“I know he has the funniest way of showing it, but he cares about you Y/N. And he loves you.” You ignored his comment, giving him one last hug before he slid into the front seat of the cab.
“I love you El.”
“Love you too sis. Always. You and Mia have fun tonight alright? And I’ll see you guys tomorrow.”
You nodded, saying goodbye to your parents once more before the car pulled away. Mia appeared at your side, leaning her head on your shoulder.
“Mia?”
“Mmhm?” She replied.
“Let’s get absolutely fucking wasted tonight.”
———
“Why the fuck did you listen to me when I said we should get wasted last night.” You groaned, flopping onto the couch, your suitcases abandoned by the door. You’d finally arrived at your apartment in Paris, a little before midday, exhausted and terribly hungover.
“You looked like you needed it.” Mia sat by your side, laying your head on her chest and rubbing your shoulders.
“You’re so lucky you recover quickly, I still feel like I’ve been hit by a monster truck.”
“I’m gonna go out and do some food shopping, I’ll bring you something. Get some rest.”
You’d practically gone straight from the bar to the train station. You, Mia and your group of university friends had gone out to celebrate graduating, and also spend one last night together before you all split and went your different ways. It had been a great night, but you’re definitely regretting it now, as you were sure the others were too. You hadn’t even had a chance to shower as you and Mia had to pack the last of your stuff and hand in your old keys to the landlord before 7am since the train to Paris Lyon was leaving Marseille St. Charles around 8.
You decided to take a long shower while Mia was gone, you usually felt much better after a good soak. You’re glad to have your little travel toiletries bag because you had absolutely no idea where anything was; the apartment was filled with countless unopened cardboard boxes. You had about two weeks before your new job started so you and Mia could hopefully unpack and decorate in that time.
Definitely starting tomorrow. There was absolutely no way you’d be putting together furniture and organising your wardrobe today, you planned to stay in bed as long as you could instead.
You had just stepped out of the shower when you heard the doorbell ring, probably Mia who had forgotten her keys. You wrapped your towel around you, securing it as you opened the door.
“Did you not take your key-“ You looked up, your sentence breaking down half way through when you realised it wasn’t Mia in front of you. You rolled your eyes, moving to close the door in his face but he was quick, his foot reaching out to block the door from locking.
“Y/N, hear me out, please.”
“I don’t give a fuck about what you have to say Kylian, take your foot out of the way before I crush it.”
“I have boba?”
You paused for a second, still refusing to look at him.
“What flavour.”
“Mango milk tea with passion fruit pearls. I brought croissants too, from the best bakery in Paris. Very expensive. Very tasty.”
You opened the door wider, letting him walk through, cursing him for knowing you so well. He set the items on the little bit of space he could find on the kitchen worktop that wasn’t covered in boxes before turning to look at you.
His eyes scanned your body, starting at your legs, stopping when his eyes met yours. You felt stuck to the spot, your blood turning to lead as your eyes remained fixed on his, his mouth slightly ajar, your heart pounding fast. You forgot you were angry at him for a minute, flashbacks of the last time he’d seen you like this flickering across your mind instead as you suddenly remembered you were wearing next to nothing. Your hands came up to cover your chest and legs, breaking the both of you out of your hypnotic state.
“Umm…I’ll be back. Gonna put something on.” You muttered.
“Yeah…umm…sure, I’ll wait here.”
You raced to your room as quickly as you could, ignoring the funny feeling in your stomach and the way your heart was racing like it was running out of time. You rummaged through the boxes, trying to find one that had some clothes in it. After a couple of minutes of sifting through books and shoes and everything else, you managed to find a bag at the bottom of one of the boxes with your gym clothing.
You pulled the shorts and a t-shirt over your head, rolling your eyes when you realised which top you were wearing. You walked back into the room with your arms crossed, trying your best to look angry as you faced Kylian, a smile spreading across his face when he noticed your top.
“Wipe that smug grin off your face, I could only find my gym stuff and it was the only top in there.”
“You work out with my name on your back?” He held out the boba to you, his eyebrow raised in amusement.
“Shut up. These jerseys are surprisingly very breathable.” You snatched the plastic cup out of his grasp, piercing the film lid with the straw and taking a sip.
“Well yeah, we do run around in them for 90 minutes so we’d hope they’re breathable. Remind me to get you a new one from this season though, that one’s a bit outdated.”
“This one’s just fine. Thank you for the boba.” You raised the cup at him before stretching your hand out, pointing to the open door that led to the hallway. “You can go now.”
“Y/N-“
“Kylian I don’t want to hear it. You think what, by bringing my favourite drink and cracking jokes everything’s okay?”
“No, of course not. I tried to call you last night.“
“And I didn’t answer for a fucking reason. Did it cross your mind maybe I didn’t want to talk to you after you stood me and Mia up?”
“Listen-“
“There’s not an excuse you can give me that’s valid Kylian. You promised me you’d be there. I kept looking out for you, the whole ceremony, even after it was over, we lingered around the venue for so long my parents and Elliot almost missed their flight back home. Of course I didn’t tell them why I wanted to wait around, they still think you’re the best thing that’s happened to them besides their own kids.”
“Y/N, I’m sorry. I got on the plane to come to you, I swear-“
“So you were in Marseille yesterday?”
“Yes, I was on my way to-“
“Funny you were in Marseille yesterday.”
“Y/N-“
“Because I was in Marseille yesterday, and this morning too actually, up until about hmmm, 4 hours ago? But I didn’t see you. At all.”
“Y/N-“
“You’re so-“
“Y/N STOP TALKING!” He suddenly yelled, your sentence cut off midway by his outburst. You don’t think you’ve ever seen this many frown lines across his forehead before, he must be really pissed. That makes two of you.
“Don’t raise your voice at me.”
“Well I don’t have a choice if that’s the only way to get you to fucking listen.”
“I don’t have to listen to anything you have to say.”
“You know what? You always do this. You always assume you know what I’m going to say, or how I feel so you just cut me off before I get a chance to even explain myself.”
“Because I know you’re going to come out with some bullshit Kylian! Always you and your empty fucking promises, I’m so over it. But sure, prove me wrong. Go on, explain yourself then.”
You raised your arms as if to say he has the floor to speak. He clenched his jaw, his lips in a tight line as the both of you stared at each other, a million and one emotions swirling around you. Anger, pain, disappointment, sadness. If looks could kill, the both of you would be simultaneously 6 feet under.
“I swear I didn’t mean to miss your graduation Y/N, I really wanted to be there. I literally got to the airport and I, I bumped into Renee. I swear it was unplanned, I had no idea she was going to be there, and we just started talking and she had a lot she wanted to say to me, and honestly I didn’t realise how long we were together for, I swear it wasn’t my intention to miss your ceremony.”
“So what was so important that you had to talk about there in that moment, for such a long time-“
“She wanted to get back together.”
“You broke up?” This was news to you, as far as you were concerned, Kylian was still dating her, you hadn’t seen anything in the tabloids about them breaking up.
“Yeah. A couple of months ago.”
“So you’re back together now? For what, the 5th time?”
“It’s complicated Y/N. I love her.”
A sharp but fleeting pain travelled across your chest and it took everything in you not to physically keel over. It was laughable, how easy it was for one person to completely lose feelings they claim to have had and fall in love with someone else, while the other couldn’t even utter the words to another, whether they meant it or not. Because the pent up feelings were still there, choking you, gripping your heart tight and rendering you useless, incapable of loving anyone else, but him. You felt like dying, maybe it would hurt less than living in this sick and twisted reality, this constant loop of being reminded he’s never going to love you the way you love him.
“Yeah, Kylian, I can tell. Because she clearly means more to you than I do. I told you about this weeks in advance, you gave me your word yet when something better comes along you’re quick to just brush me under the rug like you always do.”
“I’m sorry, it wasn’t my intention. I didn’t even know how to talk to you when I realised I’d missed the ceremony, I didn’t think you’d want me there-“
“Of course I’d want you there, you fucking idiot, you’re my best friend. Why else would I ask you personally to come?
“I knew you’d at least be with your family, Mia, Marco.” He said Marco’s name with such disdain you almost laughed at the audacity he had to seem irked by the mere mention of your ex-boyfriend when he had a girlfriend of his own.
“Marco is in Japan. We broke up. For good.”
“Oh. I didn’t know.”
“Why would you? You don’t talk to me about Renee, I don’t talk to you about Marco. Some kind of unspoken rule right?”
There was a silence between you before he spoke.
“I’m sorry. I know you loved him.” For someone who’d been in your life for almost two decades, perhaps Kylian really didn’t know you as well as you thought he did. Or maybe you were so good at pretending you’d managed to convince everyone but yourself you’d been in love with Marco.
“Anyways Ky, I think you’ve done all your explaining. You can leave.”
He rounded the kitchen island, stepping closer to you so he could take your hand that wasn’t holding the drink, gripping it softly in his.
“Y/N, I really am sorry. Please, l don’t want us to start your move to Paris on a bad note. You have no idea how happy I am that you're finally here to stay. Let me take you out tomorrow. Just me and you, a celebratory dinner. On me. Heck I’ll even take you shopping, any store you like, I’ll carry all the bags and not complain one bit.”
A soft giggle left your lips and you cursed yourself for letting him get away with his shit so easily.
“Please, I’m sorry gummy. It won’t happen again. Let me make it up to you.”
“You better bring your shiniest Amex card tomorrow when you pick me up.”
“It’s a date.” He smiled, and you tried not to think too deeply into what he’d just said.
Just then, you heard the front door close, Mia appearing in the doorway with several shopping bags, singing to herself. She noticed you and Kylian stood in the middle of the kitchen, your hand in his and she rolled her eyes, knowing you had definitely let him off easy. Luckily for you, she wasn’t about to do that. She smiled sweetly, before reaching into one of the bags and pulling out an orange. It happened so quickly, you didn’t not anticipate the orange leaving Mia’s hand with such force, heading straight for Kylian’s head. He managed to duck at the last second, the fruit finding the wall behind him instead of his skull.
“Mia what the hell?!” He shouted.
“Fucking dickhead. You’re lucky that wasn’t a knife.”
/———-/
Part 4 finally 😭😭 just two more parts to go! Sorry it took so long please forgive me 🤞🏿 and it may seem like it’s going round in circles but they gotta do this stupid arguing and not talking about their feelings 5 times before they finally get their shit together so we’re getting close to the happy ending, very soon though it’s deffo going to get very messy before it gets better 😵‍💫 I hope y’all like it <3 (also it’s half 3 in the morning and I haven’t edited this entirely so I’m super sorry for any mistakes 🙏🏿)
Also I know the French don’t do graduations (shame if you ask me, I loved my grad) but I had to have one to fit the story 🤭
And I’m sorry for making y’all wait, im back at work and it’s hard to find the time to write (I had a bit of writers block) and also I find it hard to write super short pieces so it does take me a while to write so I’m super grateful to y’all for being so kind and patient 🥺🫶🏿

West Coast | Warren Rojas x Plus-Size Reader
Request from anonymous: hi! not sure if your taking requests <3 or if you would be comfortable with this one but I just wanted maybe a plus size reader fic with literally any of the guys. I know thats a weird request but i feel like a lot of the writing and a lot of stuff from the 70s rlly glorifies eating disorders and being skinny and i just would love a fic where the reader is a lot like cass elliot/mama cass, like she has a good voice or her own band and is underlooked cause of her weight.
A/N: I hope I did this request justice 💕
Warnings: Mentions of body positivity, mentions of E.D.'s (not your own)
Daisy Jones and The Six Masterlist
Tumblr media
Being a female vocalist in the 70's had it's fair share of problems. Especially for women who didn't have the "ideal body type" of the era. Unless you were stick thin, you typically weren't given the light of day.
Growing up, it hurt to watch all of your classmates idolize women who they related to. But you never had that. At the time, there were very few plus-sized women in music and film. Those who were often got talked down on.
You looked at yourself in the mirror that night, really looked at yourself—and you found nothing. Nothing that you didn't like about yourself. Sure, there were things that every girl picks out about themselves, but you couldn't do it. You couldn't do it to the little girl inside of you who longed to have someone to idolize.
That day, you made yourself a promise: you were going to pursue a career in the music field and give girls like you, who grew up without someone to look up to, someone to relate to.
You moved to Los Angeles a month later.
------------------------------------------------------------
Y/N L/N, vocalist: My goal, as an artist, has never been to fit in with everyone else. Society's standards have never made room for me or people like me. They haven't made room for people of color or those who have different sexualities or sexual orientations. It was about time for that to change.
------------------------------------------------------------
The move wasn't easy. You didn't even know where to begin out in LA. All you had was a goal and a voice, two things that don't get many people very far. Anyone can sing, not everyone can sing well.
After years of getting turned down by constant music producers for "not having the right look", Teddy Price gave you a chance.
He said as long as you have a good stage presence, a good sound, and the ability to engage a crowd, you had it all.
You expressed your hopes for plus-sized girls like yourself to be able to relate to someone.
"It wasn't easy growing up," You explained, "Kids are shitheads, especially when they're younger. Chances are, they don't get better as adults. They just get quieter. I'm done being quiet, Teddy."
He nodded, taking a drag of his cigarette, "So, what are you gonna do about it?"
"I'm going to sing my damn heart out."
"Come in tomorrow."
------------------------------------------------------------
Y/N: I went in the next day and gave it all I had. All the years I spent in choir and voice lessons had finally paid off. I got a deal with promises of releasing my own single. The only problem was that I had to write a song. I'd never really done that before. Nothing that was good, at least. He gave me three weeks to write a song. I came back in two. We were recording my album not even a month after that.
------------------------------------------------------------
"What do you hope fans take away from your newest album?" An interviewer asked you, sitting across from you on a velvet couch on an empty stage.
"I hope that this new generation is able to look at their TV screens or magazines and see someone who looks like them. There are girls out there starving themselves to be thin because that's the idea society puts in their head. But all bodies are beautiful," You explained, "That's what I want people to take away from this. That they're beautiful and not alone."
------------------------------------------------------------
After the interview, you made your way back to your dressing room. That wasn't, however, without bumping into a man with a head full of black curls, wearing the most ridiculous pair of sunglasses you'd ever seen.
He took a step back, looking you up and down after apologizing, "You're Y/N L/N."
Nodding, you extended a hand, "Pleasure to meet you. You are...?"
Clearing his throat, he shook your hand, "Warren Rojas, I'm with The Six."
"I've heard about you guys," You revealed, "We're both just starting out on the west coast."
He nodded, his eyes focused on your legs.
Suddenly aware of his gaze, you stepped to the side, "Is there a problem, Mr. Rojas?"
"You're beautiful," He said, coughing, "Sorry, that's straightforward."
"No, no, it's alright. I like straightforward."
He grinned, "I'm a leg guy."
"You're what?"
"Along for the ride, that's what I said," He bobbed his head, "I've got to go on, but am I good to pick your brain about your album after our interview?"
You smiled, "I look forward to seeing you."
"Then it's a date?" He asked hopefully.
"If that's what you want to call it."

Chapter 2
Summary: Alex and Casey are called to the precinct where they find Olivia trying to get a little girl to open up.
Same warnings apply usual SVU stuff but specifically child abuse though not explicit
Chapter 2/?
Tumblr media
It felt like the day was passing in slow motion. Once Niki was in Casey’s arms, she refused to let go. Any attempt to pull her away only caused the little girl to tighten her hold and upset her further. Despite Olivia and Elliot's best efforts to piece together her story, Niki remained hesitant to answer questions and tell them any more details, her small voice barely audible when she managed to give one-word answers as she clung to Casey.
Although she wasn’t sure what to do at first, Casey couldn’t find it in herself to let the girl go. So she accepted that she would likely have the child glued to her if it meant it brought Niki some comfort. She gently stroked Niki's hair as she paced with her in her arms, helping her understand the questions Olivia and Elliot were asking. Alex’s eyes never left her wife as she took in the heart-breaking sight of the small figure in Casey’s arms that was already tugging at her heartstrings and sending a weird fluttering feeling through her.
Pulling her eyes away for a moment, Alex caught sight of a figure outside the door. The office had been left with just the two detectives, the ADAs, and the girl. Looking through the gaps in the curtains, Alex could see it was Huang, and judging from the way he was observing her, he had been watching them for a while. Once she was out the door, she could see he was carefully studying the interactions happening inside. If she had to guess, he had probably already been caught up on the situation by Munch or Fin. He greeted her with a nod but kept watching through the door. “How’s our little friend doing?”
Alex sighed and looked back inside. “She’s exhausted. She won’t let go of Casey, so they haven’t been able to get much out of her.” She watched the way his brow furrowed, his expression thoughtful. “If I could guess, I would say the girl has been emotionally starved for a long time. She’s clearly been through a lot of trauma, and it appears that she has formed a strong emotional attachment to Casey. It’s likely she sees her as the first person in a long time that has been able to bring her a sense of safety, so she attached herself to her,” he observed, his voice tinged with concern. “It’s going to make it more complicated for her to open up to Olivia and Elliot.”
Alex nodded, her own worry mirrored in her eyes. "Is there anything we can do to help her?"
Huang hesitated for a moment before responding. "Right now, be gentle with her. Casey's presence is providing her with a sense of security. So we try to use that to our advantage."
Back inside, Casey could tell that Niki was starting to get overwhelmed. They had been trying to get information out of her for hours now, and her exhaustion was catching up with her. Instead of answering the next question Elliot asked, Niki buried her face in Casey's shoulder, effectively shutting down the question as her eyelids began drooping, her little fingers playing with a strand of red hair until sleep began to overtake her.
Casey held her close, her heart aching with a mixture of sadness and protectiveness that she didn’t think she was capable of feeling for a child she had known for less than a day. Subconsciously, she began to softly bounce on her feet, bouncing the girl slightly until she felt Niki’s breaths even out and her body go limp with sleep.
With Niki asleep, Casey looked up to find Alex, Huang, Elliot, and Olivia all looking at her, their expressions a mix of exhaustion, concern, and in Alex’s case, she wasn’t sure if it was longing, adoration, or maybe both.
"What now?" Casey asked softly, her voice barely above a whisper as to not wake the girl.
"We need to figure out our next steps. We don’t have anything concrete to be able to pinpoint where she came from," Olivia replied, her gaze fixed on Niki's sleeping form.
Huang stepped forward, his expression grave. "We'll need to continue asking her questions, but we also need to be mindful of her emotional state. Pushing her too hard could cause her to shut down completely."
Just then, Munch and Fin came through the door, interrupting the conversation. “Maybe you don’t have to keep asking questions. We got a hit on DNA.”
“DNA? She can’t be more than five,” Elliot pointed at Niki. He had had enough kids to be confident enough in his guess. “How did her DNA end up in our databases?” They all knew it was rather unusual for them to get a DNA hit on a child.
“Not ours. Immigration. Her name is Nicole Vega, born in 1997. DNA was taken to establish a relationship with her uncle when they got here three years ago,” Munch let out a humorless chuckle as he spoke. “As if there weren’t enough civil violations, now we have the DNA from babies running through the government without their consent.”
Olivia chose to not delve into his comment, focusing on the more important matter at hand. “Uncle? What about the parents?” She asked, trying to piece everything together.
Fin handed them a file establishing the reports they had found. “Both dead. Her only family listed is her uncle, and he seems like the last person who should have a child if his priors are anything to go by.”
They all looked over the information on the paper, the picture becoming clearer by the second as they all understood what this meant. “His last known address is on the street they found her. Go break the door down. I’ll have the warrant on its way by the time you get there,” Alex’s voice was laced with anger, and Casey, who had been focused on keeping Niki asleep, looked up to see her wife’s face marked by disgust and anger as the blonde pulled out her phone to ask for one of her many favors.
When she was done and everyone had dispersed, Casey pulled Alex’s hand until they were sitting on the couch, mainly to let Casey rest and get Niki in a more comfortable position, and also so that she could be close to her wife. Almost as second nature, Casey leaned her head on Alex’s shoulder as Alex turned to place a peck on her hairline.
“Do you want to try and lay her down?” Alex asked, seeing the way Casey was shifting to try and get comfortable.
She saw a flash of protectiveness cross her wife’s face as she finally settled down in a position that was comfortable for both her and Niki. “I don’t think I could pry her away from me even if I wanted to. Who thought five-year-olds had such strong grips?”
She chuckled a bit, but Alex could see right through her. “So you don’t want to let go of her, counselor?”
Casey very lightly shoved Alex’s shoulder and signaled to the girl. “Look at her, Alex. She’s so tiny and so scared. You saw the hospital's report; she clearly needs some comfort after everything she has gone through. So I’m happy to be her human pillow if she’s able to feel safe for a moment,” she said as she ran one of her hands up and down Niki’s back.
Alex smiled at her, reaching out to put her hand on top of Casey’s, resting them both over the little girl's back. For someone who claimed she didn’t know how to relate to kids, Casey was incredibly gentle and loving with this tiny child, and it made Alex's heart swell with love for her. “I love you so much, you know that?”
Casey rolled her eyes playfully. “You would be doing the same, and don’t even try to pretend like you wouldn’t.”
She shrugged her shoulders, knowing her wife was right but still marveling at how amazing Casey was. “Yeah, probably. But she went to you, and I’m glad you can make her feel safe, even if it’s for a little while.”

i don't usually get involved with team stuff but mini rant (im low-key losing my fucking mind)
I don't understand people who are Team Green, and not because of their opinions on the characters. I find Team Green as some of the most complex, interesting characters in the whole lot of asoiaf.
1: First of all, the treatment of the strong boys. They act like Jace and Luke are absolute monsters; which, I don't necessarily agree with, but without bias I do agree they are not pure and cherubic angels. Lucerys is impulsive and childish, making jokes about actual trauma and maiming a ten year old who was influenced by his older brother. Jacaerys has extreme anger issues which lead to him acting arrogantly and stubbornly to the respite of his elders.
This does not mean they are *demons*, though, and do not deserve to be treated as such. I've seen people say that they were horrible for not showing a horrified reaction to Vaemond's death, that they should've felt remorse; what choice was for them to make? Lucerys was openly against the thing, wishing his own birthright upon the person who tried to usurp him; Jacaerys heard only the words "whore" and "bastards", which set him off. I do not blame him for this in the slightest; those words have been used his entire life to demonize him, villainize him and his mother.
Other people say Rhaenyra was terrible for making her sons believe they were real Targaryens, not admitting they were bastards and trying to persuade them from the throne. This take is just - abhorrent, imo. Jacaerys was taught by his grandsire, his mother, his father that he was going to inherit the throne just like his mother would before him. Lucerys and him obviously knew they were bastards - it is hard to ignore when everyone looks at you in the street, points you out, suggests you are not what you say. Jacaerys also spent his entire life, especially in the Dance, trying to prove himself a worthy heir. His traits of being well-studied and righteous were given to Aemond, because there would be no debate on who to choose if not.
"Team Green writers should've written the show! They're making the Blacks too sympathetic!"
The blacks are supposed to be the sympathetic ones. They are the tragedy of the war; the close-knit family that, in their pursuit to stay together, were torn apart and murdered by themselves. Joffrey died alone. Lucerys died alone. Jacaerys died alone. Daemon died alone. Rhaenyra was the only one who died with her son. They were the epitome of a caring, loving family - and what did that get them? Their reluctance to be ruthless resulted in the cold murder of a child. Lucerys was 13 in the book - 14/15 in the show. His death should be as hard hitting and as sympathetic as Jaehaerys, but somehow, it is not. To make a joke about Vhagar ripping Arrax to pieces is funny, to make a joke about Blood and Cheese is horrible. The double standard is just *baffling* to me.
Another thing - most of TG loves Jon Snow. They think that Daenerys was mad, that she deserved to die, that she was evil. By this precedent, if you can accept a legitimized bastard on the throne in the form of Jon, why is it *so hard* to picture Jacaerys on the throne?
"They have no personality!"
They had absolutely no screentime. The writers gave a scene to a fucking *foot fetish*, and they could not give us a scene of Lucerys, Jacaerys, or Joffrey. Especially when Lucerys was going to die in that season - he had a total of 23 minutes of screentime, and near 6 minutes of lines. That is not even half of an episode worth - especially for him to just be sitting in the background. And the times when he is talking? He is made to be the most unsympathetic character, ever. Laughing at Aemond, attacking Aemond - he is used mainly as a plot device, and it's sad, because I truly believe he deserved better than that, bc Elliot Grihault is a great actor :D
might make a part 2 if this idiot in a discord RP keeps insisting tg is righteous and perfect and amazing and MY fav characters suck ass

I was tagged by @sothischickshe (thank you!!! 🥰) to answer 20 questions for writers:
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
205.
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
609,094
3. What fandoms do you write for?
fandoms i've written for include:
Law & Order: SVU / L&O: Organized Crime
Good Girls
Gotham
Buffy the Vampire Slayer / Angel
Criminal Minds
Graceland
Stranger Things
The Walking Dead
Riverdale
Castlevania
Preacher
Four Brothers
Outer Banks
Gilmore Girls
while no longer available, in the past i've also written for:
Fast and Furious franchise
MCU / Marvel
Boondock Saints
Hocus Pocus
From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series
DC
(plus more i'm probably forgetting about)
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Shared History (Good Girls/Brio)
Degree of Separation (Good Girls/Brio)
Milkshakes (Good Girls/Brio)
Deep Sense of Belonging (Good Girls/Brio)
Sacred Art of Kissing (Good Girls/Brio)
5. Do you respond to comments?
i read all of them for sure but i'm terrible sometimes at responding although i do try my best
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
ooft, okay. there's probably more than this but the following have major character death warnings that could very well be classed as angsty lmao:
i wrote this little ficlet: Gone (SVU, bensler/EO) in which a raid goes wrong and it's just pain from start to finish and then there's Until Long After She Takes Her Final Breath which is a Good Girls/brio fic in which their reunion at the beginning of season 3 goes very differently.
Why don't we go to Venus? is another Good Girls/brio fic in which the summary is: Rio killed her and that was supposed to be the end of it but Beth doesn’t seem to be done with him quite yet.
that one is probably my angstiest overall but the ending is probably the least angsty bit about it??? haha
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
honestly? i have no idea and i have no clue how to check 😭😂
8. Do you get hate on fics?
there was someone going around the SVU/OC fandom leaving weird hate comments on people's stuff (anonymously) and i got one but while it felt rude, it didn't feel like hate, but also it felt like it was supposed to be hateful, y'know? pretty sure i just deleted it though (i for sure ignored it) 😂
but generally, no. i'm lucky to say that i tend to avoid hate on social media and that includes fanfiction.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
i have done and the variety isn't huge but it's there? i guess?
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
i have done! beyond the obvious (where shows, etc share worlds), i did a boondock saints/the walking dead one (which was also co-written) because norman reedus stars in both 😂
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
not that i'm aware of?
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
again, not that i'm aware of
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
yes! the aforemention boondock saints/the walking dead fic was co-written on ff.net and i co-wrote (with the same person), a fast and furious fic.
14. What’s your all time favourite ship?
i lost myself a ton in writing olivia/elliot from svu/organized crime as well as beth/rio from good girls so they'd probably battle it out for top spot.
BUT
if i'm being brutally honest, my all time favourite ever to write were fast and furious ships 😂 especially the OGs (specifically vince and leon) with my OCs (although there were canon ships i loved to write too!). it was just so fun and freeing and i constantly think about it.
(i also loved when i wrote random marvel/mcu pairings, winterwitch was probably my number one for them and again, i think about it a lot)
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
i think it's unlikely i'll finish a lot but especially a degree of separation. i kind of hate it, i'm so sorry 😭😭😭
16. What are your writing strengths?
the thought of analysing my own writing right now sounds painful but two of the most common nice things people tell me is that: 1) they like how i write dialogue and 2) they like my writing style in general
(but of which i highly appreciate!)
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
i don't do it enough?
nah. true but seriously, there's a ton, however, i do tend to waffle on and write something in several sentences that could have been just one 😭
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I don't think i've ever done it? if i have it'll be dialogue or whatever that's already in the show/move/etc
19. First fandom you wrote for?
The Fast and the Furious 🥰
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
still on ao3: it has to be Why don't we go to Venus? but also Knock First which is a Beth/Rio/Original Male Character threesome fic that was SO MUCH fun
no longer posted: a fic for The Fast and the Furious. it was a Vince/OC story. it was so much fun to write and it was one of my most popular back when i was posting on ff.net and i miss this story all the time (even though it's probably awful 😂) and always think about re-writing and posting it again on ao3
Tagging: @conscience-killer @constant-sinner @astarkey @xstrawmari @blainesebastian if ya like! (sorry if you've been tagged before!)

catching up might be bad for my heart, but it's good for my soul...
my heart is breaking for everyone, rah included. here's all the stuff I've been thinking, feeling, speculating on, and just wallowing in as I caught up...
rah
he cares deeply for dira
he was deeply hurt by her abandoning their friendship, and whatever simmering romantic feelings were there that were also seemingly discarded was just more salt on the wound
he knows he fucked up, but he also meant everything he said in the hotel room
he's scared of himself and what he did
he did not want to be forgiven by dira because he doesn't think he deserves to be
even though he wanted to be with her, he doesn't think she should be with him
he's only seeing the doctor because she wanted it for him, but he seemed like he would have preferred disappearing into nothing
he still isn't looking for forgiveness, but he doesn't want to be a burden to dira anymore, so he asked for what he truly knew could be certain death, to meet with darren
dira was right there and he didn't even try to speak to her, and I don't think it was because darren was there, like he knows he's at darren's mercy, but his desire not burden dira anymore and to remove even the shadow of blame from her is greater than his fear of what darren would do to him
dira
she feels betrayed by her friend
she feels betrayed by her own actions
she got called out and had to work through the difficult task of separating rah's words from his actions, of reconciling her own actions with her true feelings
she has unearned guilt about how it got to that point
she has feelings for rah, but they're all muddled because it was a dire situation that forced her to acknowledge them, and they're tainted because, for the time being, and possibly for some undetermined amount of time into the future, she may not be able to feel those feelings without also feeling the fear that preceded them
she didn't hide the truth from Indya just because she had sex or to cover for rah
she was emotionally overwhelmed with everything that happened, but the feelings were compounded by her realizing she fucked up, that she was not where she thought she was head-wise or heart-wise, that in her attempts to escape from her sister's shadow, in her desire to be seen as Indira Dior, a "woman" who has her own thoughts and is her own person and not Hope the 2nd in her parents eyes, she went about it the wrong way
she knew that telling indya would mean that she wasn't at a point where she could take full responsibility for her herself, that she was still a child, and, with or without hope as margin, she still has a ways to go
her fear about another elliot situation is 100% percent real and the way she brings it up to hope and darren is like saying even if you think I'm wrong about everything else, even if you are disappointed in me, worried for me, angry at me or the situation, at least understand, at least agree with me about that.
indya
she didn't make it about her; parents can get so wrapped up in fighting the past that they forget to see that no matter how similar the situation or how similar the personality, their child is still a person separate from them
she was hurt by the situation and it brought to mind and to heart an uncomfortable past and she did feel like she was seeing herself and she didn't want that for her daughter
she walked a fine line when talking to dira by making the connection to what was on her heart to dira, but she focused on dira's feelings and dira's mindset and dira's role in the situation
darren
he drew a line that was understandable, but also a little startling because he stood on it while his Wife was on one side and everybody else, even his child, was on the other
he acted in a way that would leave me unsurprised if he was of the mind that his love for his children is undeniable and hell hath no fury like him when he's protecting them, but children are meant to be nurtured and loved, but they will move on, and though hope might be their diamond, it's indya who is forever
jayce
he should not consort with criminals, but I think between rah and bishop, he's got people in his orbit that could help him out with some surveillance equipment so that he has back up/proof against whatever games that student might play
ATTENTION READERS™ PLEASE READ THIS!!! Excellent observations my friend!

Aziraphale = Anne Elliot
Gaiman said Aziraphale's favorite Jane Austen novel might be Persuasion. It's mine as well so I've been thinking about it and how it parallels the Ineffible Trial Separation (IT'S NOT A DIVORCE PEOPLE!!)
So, Anne Elliot is the smartest, kindest, relatively most well adjusted member of her family [Read: Heaven] that was once great and wealthy and now is barely scraping by on the illusion of organizational perfection.
She meets dashing, stoic Captain Wentworth [Crowley], who is on leave from the military and they make a strong connection and fall in love. He proposes!
Anne desperately wants to marry her love, but her Godmother [with serious Metatron vibes] Lady Russell discourages it because of Wentworth's lack of wealth and status so Anne turns him down.
And basically spends THE NEXT 8 YEARS regretting it and missing Wentworth.
Well, he returns a rich successful self-made gentleman and Anne is like "oh man, I still love him so much and he'll want nothing to do with me."
Loads of other stuff happen [you should really read it] but it ends with Wentworth basically releasing his anger towards Anne and realizing he's STILL MADLY IN LOVE WITH AZIRAPHA... uh, ANNE!
Then, because it's the era of repressed feelings and communication, he sneaks her THE MOST ROMANTIC LETTER EVER...
"I can listen no longer in silence. I must speak to you by such means as are within my reach. You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago. Dare not say that man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death. I have loved none but you. Unjust I may have been, weak and resentful I have been, but never inconstant. You alone have brought me to Bath. For you alone, I think and plan. Have you not seen this? Can you fail to have understood my wishes? I had not waited even these ten days, could I have read your feelings, as I think you must have penetrated mine. I can hardly write. I am every instant hearing something which overpowers me. You sink your voice, but I can distinguish the tones of that voice when they would be lost on others. Too good, too excellent creature! You do us justice, indeed. You do believe that there is true attachment and constancy among men. Believe it to be most fervent, most undeviating, in F. W.
I must go, uncertain of my fate; but I shall return hither, or follow your party, as soon as possible. A word, a look, will be enough to decide whether I enter your father's house this evening or never."
[sigh] UGH!!!
Anyhow, ignore the "Father's house" part because they pretty much literally sail off into the sunset but long story short, IT'S NOT A DIVORCE! They're gonna end up together after we all hurt for too long and THESE IDIOTS ARE THE MOST ROMANTIC COUPLE SINCE JANE AUSTEN AND I LOVE THEM. THE. END.

No but for real can we TALK about how there is some genuinely offensive shit re: the Romani in Kleypas's book that gets a pass, but the in-character stupid line stuff gets cut bc it's the 21st century or whatever. Like I generally like her books, but if there's something to update that should be it!
Yeeeeah dude it really bugs me, ESPECIALLY because I feel like there's really zero excuse. Beyond just "educate yourself Lisa" ... she's aware that her books have "race issues". Because the incident that I'm pretty sure helped kick this off was Hello Stranger getting called out for a racist passage. Her oldest books (which she's essentially let go out of print) have been critiqued re: race. While there are some complex intersections re: race and ethnicity at play with Cam and Kev, I still feel like the fact that she's aware that her books aren't perfect re: race means she has to know those aspects are problematic.
I knew Seduce Me at Sunrise had edits to the moment when Kev kidnaps Win.... and though that's honestly one of my favorite moments in the book, I though maybe the edits were meant to be downplay the kidnapping as Kev's Mystical Rom Dude Ritual moment. Which I don't remember being HUGE in the act itself, but in dialogue, etc. But no! I was just basically taking away the aspects of "ravishing". Which is fucking stupid, lmao. Because in no way could you read the line about "she was going to be ravished" and interpret it as "Kev is going to rape Win". Why? Because we are in Win's head when that happens, and she is literally like "FUCKING FINALLY".
(Personally, I think Lisa unintentionally wrote Win as having a bit of a rape fantasy/CNC fetish vibe, and like... that's fine. People don't like to talk about it, but rape fantasies are among the most common fantasies for women to have, and it is fine, and it is one reason why a lot of people like old school romances, dark romance etc.)
But all the weird shit wherein, for example, Cam will be all "YOU ENGLISH DON'T UNDERSTAND, WE ROM DO NOT VIEW A HOUSE AS HOME" when like, the a good chunk of series revolves around the Hathaways basically doing a massive home reno in which Cam and Kev are both quite invested lmao, stays. The weird asides about Kev's hot-blooded Rom nature stay. (And might I add, lol... Kev seemed a lot more disconnected from that stuff, and one thing I dislike a good bit is that him shedding his inhibitions with Win and letting loose is like, aligned with him letting this Rom aspect of his personality that he'd been denying... free. The shedding of Kev's sexual inhibitions are aligned with his heritage, because in these books Lisa basically uses Roma to suggest "wild, untamed sexuality". And after his own book, Kev is significantly more involved in Cam's "let us help these unknowing English people with our mystical ways" stuff than he was before. Because now that he's fucking Win nasty the way he always wanted, he's like... more... Rom....? I love Kev and Win, but I hate that.)
Lisa is by no means the only historical romance writer who's done this. I think there's a grand tradition in historical writers working around the aughts especially where you get the vibe that they're like "well, I want to acknowledge that poc existed back then, and I want to portray them positively" but they also don't want to invest in deep characterization or push their (let us be real, often racist) readership too far... So it'll be like "here's the hero's best friend, a former slave!" "here's the hero's half-brother, also a former slave because their dad owned a plantation!" (Read a Tessa Dare book that did this, and I can absolutely see what she was going for, but it didn't come off well.) I love Jennifer Ashley's Mackenzie books. I LOATHE The Seduction of Elliot McBride because she tried to incorporate India into the narrative by having the hero like, live there in the past as a colonizer, and be all "India is amazing, here are my friends because I like Indian people more than white people now" (which, woof, but very common at this time) but lmao his buddies were his employees? And also his illegitimate daughter whose Indian mother was DEAD? Like, come on dude.
(Still not quite as bad as the Kerrigan Byrne book wherein the hero is a literal former war criminal whose big kindness was taking the lone survivor of a village he massacred home and making him his valet. But still.)
And I mean, this does continue, which in some ways I view more harshly because there has been years for feedback and critique to accumulate so more recently working authors should know better. Like the Evie Dunmore "hero has a Plot Important Dancing Shiva tattoo except that isn't actually Shiva in any way, shape, or form and also let's throw in a predatory villainous gay man for good measure" book.
And I'm not saying that Lisa's work is as egregious as those examples. I'm not. But none of the above examples are going back and revising their work in minute detail, while missing the most problematic aspects of the work lol.
I'll also be real and add that another huge reason why these edits suck is that... Nobody is saying you can't edit your work. Authors can and should be able to do that. But... It sucks when people don't know that they're buying what is essentially an abridged version of your book, especially when the edits are heavy, as they are with certain books. Someone could've read your book 10 years ago and when they buy it on Kindle now because they finally have an e-reader, they should be able to know outright that they're buying a different version.

I LOVE your posts about Sugar Apple Fairy Tale and just read your fanfic about Rafael visiting a pregnant Ann and loved it! I hope you write more fanfics on Sugar Apple Fairy Tale and can I request you write about Ann and Shall's wedding. IT WOULD FILL ME WISH SO MUCH JOY THAT YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE!
fandom: sugar apple fairy tale words: 5677 title: wedding prep shenanigans summary: A humorous glimpse into the weeks leading up to Anne and Shall’s wedding as their friends and guests show up one after the other.
also available on ao3!
A/N: Hiya, this ask is from late august/early september, so thank you for waiting all this time!
It's more on the funny/gen side since my last fic (spillover) was 100% pure fluff, but there was no way I could write about Anne and Shall's wedding without involving all the friends the two made over their adventures.
Thank you for waiting! I hope it was worth it!
As a heads-up, there are some spoilers for events in future LN volumes in Keith's section. It starts when he says "Ah, I was thinking out loud…" and ends when you read "It had been a worrisome whirlwind of drama and tragedy."
(And the changes of spelling between Cat and Kat are on purpose, depending on who talks to him. When it's Cat, it's because they're referencing the animal).
Despite the distance separating them, when Alph Hingley, Keith Powell, Hugh Mercury, Bridget Page, Elliot Collins, and the many other friends Anne and Shall made over the years received a notice for the wedding ceremony of a certain sugar master and an obsidian fairy, they all shared the same thought.
It’s about time.
Followed immediately by: wait, if I received an invitation, then who’s planning this?
--
Bridget, with her fiancé Orland and her ex-fiancé Elliot in tow, was the first one to arrive, of course. She greeted Anne with a warm hug, gave a solemn nod to Shall fen Shall and Mythril Lid Pod, and went straight to the crux of things.
“The wedding is only weeks away! Do you have everything planned?”
“Yes.
“Your dress?”
“Almost done. The seamstress wanted to see me one or two more times to make the final adjustments.”
“And Shall’s outfit?”
“All set!”
“What about the reception?”
“Right next to the church. The head priest and the mayor said they’d lend us tables and chairs so we could eat and party outside.”
“And how many people are you expecting? Do you have a guest list?”
Anne handed over the list, which Bridget briefly skimmed through. She nodded in satisfaction.
“Who’s in the charge of the catering? Oh, and what about the sugar confection? Did you order one? Who did you ask?”
“A-about that…”
“She was planning of making her own,” Shall said, his first intervention since Bridget started grilling Anne over the details. He hadn’t looked up once from whatever he was sewing, but it was obvious he’d kept up with the conversation. “She said she didn’t want to trouble anyone.”
“Shall!” Anne cried, betrayed.
Elliot frowned. He threw an arm around Anne’s shoulders, drawing her to him. He ruffled her hair.
“That won’t do, Anne. Do you know how many people would die to make your wedding sugar sculpture? Just think of it: Hingley, Powell, Mercury, Nadir, Valentine, King, Orland, Bridget—"
“Why did you cite me last, Elliot?”
“— and of course, saving the best for last: good old me. The silver sugar viscount and the best sugar masters of this generation at your beck and call. Soooo, who’s going to be the lucky sod?”
“Can’t I pick myself?”
“Ah ah,” Elliot tutted, wagging a finger. “No, no, no. Don’t you know it’s bad luck?”
“You guys should all make a sugar confection, and then we can choose a winner on the wedding day!” Mythril piped up.
“We? I wasn’t aware this was your wedding, Mythril Lid Pod,” Shall added.
“Ugh, you know what I meant!”
“Yes. You meant to stuff yourself full of silver sugar.”
“I’m going to gnaw on your wedding tunic.”
“No you won’t!” Bridget cut in. “Do you know how expensive those clothes are? Oh! I almost forgot! What about cosmetics? And your hair?”
Anne blanched, and that was an answer in and of itself.
“Anne, I can’t believe you! Come on, we’re going to Lewiston right now!”
“B-but the wedding isn’t for another mont—”
Shall, Mythril, Elliot, and Orland watched the blonde woman drag her friend. They were all quiet. Elliot made the prayer sign one would for the deceased.
Orland smacked him. To Shall, he said: “Aren’t you going to help Anne out? She’s your fiancée.”
“And she’s being dragged around by your fiancée,” Shall retorted. The implication was clear: if you’re not going to stop her, don’t expect me to.
“Hm.”
No one pointed out that the obsidian fairy, a one-man army of his own, could easily have prevented the women from leaving if he was so inclined. Keyword being ‘inclined”. No one could convince Shall (or Bridget for that matter) to do anything they didn’t want to unless you were called Anne Halford.
Mythril repeated the gesture Elliot made moments earlier.
--
“Yo.”
“Kat!”
Anne’s face positively lit up, shrieking when the older sugar master lifted her up in a bear hug. The gesture might be uncharacteristic coming from him, but hey, it wasn’t every day that his apprentice-figure was getting married. She deserved the rare show of affection.
“Hiya Anne,” Benjamin said once she was back on the ground. He was as cool and relaxed as ever. “Congratulations on the wedding~”
“Thank you, Benjamin! But it’s still two weeks away.”
“Oh good, we’re early~ The weather was just awful in Snowpoint, I thought we wouldn’t make it.”
“It smells good in here, small stuff,” Kat said. “What’s cooking?”
“An apple pie! I wanted to make a big one for the wedding, so Bridget and I are trying to figure out the right proportions. Want to be our taste-tester?”
“I won’t say no to free food.”
He followed Anne, finding Bridget, Orland, and Elliot huddled around a stove. Or rather, it was more accurate to say Elliot was huddled around the stove. Orland was holding the hearth door open while Bridget put a knife to a delicious-smelling pie. The air was filled with the scent of clove and cinnamon.
“Oooo, Hingley. That’s a nostalgic face if I’ve seen one.”
“Why am I not surprised to find you here, you freeloader.” Kat rolled his eyes. “Langston, Page. Congrats on your engagement again.”
“Thank you,” they answered in unison. Bridget added: “I think the pie is ready. Once it cools, we can eat.”
“Apple pie?” someone shouted from outside. “Wait for me! Don’t you dare eat without the great Mythril Lid Pod!”
It wasn’t long before Mythril showed up, perched on Shall’s shoulders. The two (or rather, the latter) had gone to chop some wood, the supply depleting faster with the addition of Bridget, Orland, and Elliot.
It was also a good way to keep the insatiable Mythril out of the way, lest he try to eat the apple pie dough raw.
“Oh, hi Kat! I thought I recognized your wagon outside! See, Shall fen Shall? I told you it was his!”
“Thank you for your wisdom,” Shall answered, more sarcasm than actual gratitude.
“Rude as ever, huh, Shall,” Kat said, leaning against the counter, arms crossed.
“Done hibernating, mister Cat? Glad you could make it to the wedding.”
“Hey, play nice.”
“No, no, let them, Anne.” Elliot snickered. “It’s free entertainment!”
“At least I’m doing something. You’re just lazing around, Collins.”
“Hey, hey. I’ll have you know I’m here on official Page workshop business.”
“Oh, really? And what is that?”
“We’ve got a wedding sugar confection for a very important client.”
“And where is that sugar confection? I only saw a regular carriage outside, not a crafter’s wagon.”
“Oh, that’s easy. It’s still in my head!”
“You lazy ass—”
While Elliot and Kat bickered, Anne scooted over to Shall, helping him put the wood away.
“It sure has gotten more lively,” she whispered.
“Has it? I tuned them all out since day one.”
Anne shoved him slightly, but the grin on her face betrayed her amusement. “Don’t tell Mythril Lid Pod, or we won’t hear the end of it.”
“Ha. I don’t think we’ll ever have trouble hearing him.”
She held her hands out to take another log. Shall took the opportunity to bring her hand to his mouth, using his body to hide the gesture from their friends. It wasn’t like he had trouble with displays of affections, but Anne and he could do without the teasing.
Especially Collins’s.
“Only two more weeks,” he murmured, voice pitched low, just enough to reach Anne’s ears. She felt every twist of his lips, every syllable pressed in her skin. In the low light, Shall’s eyes gleamed a beautiful dark amethyst.
She blushed, feeling warm, and squeezed his hand back with a shy smile.
“Hey, lovebirds! Get over here before the shrimp eats your share of the pie,” Elliot interrupted with his oh-so-great timing. True to his words, Mythril’s cheeks were full, resembling a squirrel.
Shall and Anne exchanged a look, sharing similar thoughts. Those would be the longest two weeks of their lives.
--
“I wasn’t expecting everyone to be here already… I’m a bit embarrassed.”
“You’re right on time actually, Keith! Bridget came in early because she wanted to help with the wedding prep, and Elliot and Orland tagged along. And Kat left Snowpoint ahead of time because he didn’t want to be stuck if the roads got snowed in.”
“Still, if I had known, I would have pushed for mister Radcliffe to let me out much earlier.” Keith pointed to the back of his wagon with a hopeful smile. “I hope my sculpture will make it up to you. It’s one of the pieces I’m most proud of!”
“I’m looking forward to it! What did you make?”
“That’s a secret. I can’t have you spoiling your own wedding gift.”
Anne pouted. “Everybody’s so cagey! First, it’s Bridget kicking me out of the venue, then Elliot telling me I can’t go home because he and Orland are making my wedding candy on behalf of the Page workshop.”
“What about Shall? And mister Hingley?”
“They’re checking with the innkeeper if we have enough rooms for all the guests.”
So far, all five artisans and three fairies had piled up in Anne’s and Shall’s home, with Anne and Shall sharing the master bedroom, Bridget in the guest room, Elliot and Orland in the other, and Kat and Mythril sleeping downstairs in the living room. However, after the reception, Anne and Shall would want for intimacy on their wedding night, and so their friends needed somewhere else where to sleep.
“The two of them? Will they be alright?” Keith asked, referencing to Kat’s short temper and Shall’s ability to get a rise out just about anyone with pinpoint precision. The two men got along like… well… cat and dog.
“Mythril Lid Pod’s with them, but if I had known everyone would give me the boot, I would have gone with them,” Anne sighed.
“In that case, do you know what to do when something’s bothering you?”
“Run and leave it all behind, right?”
Keith blinked, but a pleased smile appeared on his face. “I’m surprised you remember that. It’s been so long ago.”
“Of course! I was under a lot of stress back then, you know? Your words were a big help, they really cheered me up.”
“Just my words?” he teased.
“You know what I mean!”
He laughed. “I’m glad I could help.”
They lapsed into comfortable silence, watching the flowers sway in the slight spring breeze. All the snow had already melted, and the land was slowly regaining its colors, waking up from a long deep sleep.
“To think you’re getting married…” Keith murmured under his breath.
“Hm?”
“Ah, I was thinking out loud…” He sighed. There was something wistful, but also peaceful about his smile. “Talking about the past got me feeling nostalgic. To think that back then, our biggest worry was whether we’d make silver sugar master.”
True. A lot happened in just a few short years: Anne and Shall’s abduction by his brother Rafael fen Rafael, Shall taking his responsibilities as a potential fairy king and bargaining with the human king to slowly give fairies back their autonomy, Rafael fen Rafael’s return, and Anne and Shall almost dying at his hands and paying the price of surviving such an ordeal with their memories (Anne of her painstakingly hard-earned sugar crafting skills, Shall of his meeting with Anne and all those she brought to his life)…
It had been a worrisome whirlwind of drama and tragedy, but their happy ending was finally within reach.
And not just Anne’s and Shall’s… everyone’s: Bridget and Orland were engaged and most likely the next to get married; Elliot had assumed the reigns of the workshop, taking the strain off Glen’s shoulders; the Page workshop was flourishing ever since the Holy Beginnings exhibit; Kat and Keith kept up their work as sugar masters, refining their skills and gaining in recognition.
Everyone was moving forward towards a bright future.
But a part of Anne missed the old days, a time where life was much simpler.
“This might sound silly, but I hope we all stay in touch. I… I don’t want us to drift apart,” she said, fighting to get the words out of her tightening throat. She was suddenly overwhelmed by a wave of sadness and bittersweetness.
“Of course.” Keith patted her on the back, kind and comforting, and the gesture almost made Anne lose her composure. She sniffed the tears back. “We can meet up for the Royal Fair, for the Holy Beginnings, for Valentine’s day… Your birthday’s on the sixth month, right? So that will be our summer reunion.”
“If we only gathered for my birthday, that’d be unfair.”
“Alright, alright. Let’s come up with our own summer holiday, then. That way, no one’s jealous.”
Anne laughed, shaky. “As long as I don’t have to come up with the name.”
“You can design incredible sugar sculptures to wow royalty, but you’re stumped by names?”
“Hey! I’m a silver sugar master, not a name master!”
He laughed. Keith kept on patting her back until she felt better. She was truly lucky to have such an attentive and thoughtful person as a friend.
“Keith?”
“Hm?”
There was so much she wanted to thank him for, but she doubted she could ever convey the depths of her feelings, so Anne poured all her gratitude, her happiness, and her appreciation into two simple words: “Thank you.”
Keith wrapped his arm around her shoulders and squeezed. He whispered, barely a murmur on the wind, “Anytime.”
--
“Anne! Anne! Congratulations on the wedding!”
“Actually, it’s ‘congratulations on the engagement.’”
Noah ignored Valentine’s correction, clinging to Anne. “Can I see your dress?”
“Not today!” Anne laughed at the fairy’s pout. “Don’t worry, you’ll see it in two days.”
“But that’s too faaaaaaaar.”
“Noah.” It was Glen who spoke. The older man was on the edge of his seat, waiting for Anne and Noah to clear the way so he could get off the carriage. “If you’re that excited, why don’t you go check the church? That’s where the ceremony will be held.”
“Oh, in that case, could you tell Bridget, Orland, and Elliot that mister Glen is here?” Anne added.
“Will do!”
And just as quickly as he had latched onto Anne, Noah was off. Nadir and Valentine sputtered, giving Anne their regards before running after the fairy. Noah might be older than them both, but he was as innocent and carefree as a child.
“Mister Glen. You seem to be doing well.”
“I am. I feel much better these days.” Glen stood and Anne hovered nearby just in case, but the older man managed to make his way out of the carriage on his own. He regarded her warmly. “I believe you’ve grown. I don’t remember you being this tall.”
“I think you shrank, mister Glen,” King said. He waved at Anne. “Yo, thanks for the invitation. And congrats!”
“Thank you! I’m glad you could make it!”
“Of course. You’re one of us, even if you don’t work for the workshop officially anymore,” Glen said. “If you had told us earlier, we could have organized you a grand wedding. But what’s done is done. Are you all set?”
“Yes! Bridget was a big help. I thought I had everything handled, but there was so much more left than I expected!”
“The missy planned her own wedding months ahead. She knows her stuff.”
“Before I forget. Here.” Glen handed Anne a leather pouch, heavy and thick. There was a tinkling sound when he moved it, almost like that of coins. “For you.”
“Wait, why are you giving this to me? Are you not staying?”
“Don’t look so alarmed. I wouldn’t miss your wedding like I wouldn’t miss my daughter’s. This is a long overdue payment.”
“For what?”
“For your time as our head artisan.”
Anne blinked. She had assumed that role years ago, her goal to retrieve Shall’s wing, then to fulfill her promise to revive the Page workshop. It had never been about money.
“Mister Glen, I can’t—”
“Can’t accept it? It’s rude to refuse a gift, you know?”
“Just take it, or he’ll just ask Noah to hide it so you can’t return it to us,” King said.
Anne sighed. All her friends said she was stubborn and impossible to sway once her mind was set, but they were as equally headstrong when they wanted to be.
“Thank you, mister Glen. I appreciate it.”
“Treat yourself, Anne.” He patted her shoulder. “It’s good manners to make use of the gifts you’re given. It shows your appreciation more than saying thanks ever will.”
She was working on that, on relying on her friends, on accepting their goodwill and affection (whether through money, gifts, food or kind words) without falling back on old habits of doing everything on her own.
“Then I’ll buy myself some strawberry cakes. I’ve been craving those for a while.”
“That’s the spirit,” he laughed.
--
Anne flopped around like a fish out of water, sleep eluding her. Shall sat up from the bedding they’d laid on the ground, next to the bed — he would have been more than happy sleeping with Anne, but she’d claimed it improper before the ceremony. His guess was that she was still shy with anything beyond hugs and kisses, but also didn’t want to risk Mythril finding them twined together which… fair enough — and leaned in, cheek against his palm.
“What’s wrong?”
“I can’t sleep.”
“I can see that. Too excited for tomorrow?”
“I… I kind of don’t want tomorrow to come.” Anne gasped and put her hands to her mouth, as if she realized how her words could be interpreted only after the fact. “Ah, no! I didn’t mean it like that! I…"
He let her talk. With her tendency to ramble, her true feelings would come spilling out sooner and later. And his patience was rewarded.
“I’m so happy, you know? The past few weeks were so fun, with everyone coming and staying over. I didn’t realize how long it’s been since we were all together. But once the wedding’s over, everyone will leave… we’ll all go back to living our own lives…” She sniffed, voice shaking. “I know it’s silly, but I miss everyone. I miss them even though they haven’t left.”
Shall was reminded of Hugh’s words, many years ago — words he knew true, but words he’d never forgiven the man for since they meant to separate him from Anne. “Humans get used to comfort so quickly, they forget how to go back to their old lives.”
They seemed to sum Anne’s feelings perfectly.
“The Page headquarters are a day of travel away from here, and Lewiston less than half a day. Cat also gave you his shop, but you know him. He’ll show up to check on you once in a while,” he told her, cupping her face. This caused Anne’s unshed tears to bead at the corners of her eyes, and he wiped them away with his thumb. “Those you love and who love you will always be close to you, no matter the distance. But if the feeling gets too unbearable and you want to see them again, then let’s hit the road together.”
Anne’s smile was wobbly, but it was a start. He opened his arms, and she gladly went for a hug, burying her face against his chest as her shoulders shook quietly. He patted her hair, and she relaxed in his embrace after a while. She smelled nice and she was soft to hold.
“Thank you. I feel much better.”
“You should go to sleep. You have a long day tomorrow.”
“Oh, and you don’t?”
“I don’t need as much sleep as you.”
“I know. It’s so unfair. Do you know how much more work I could get done otherwise?”
“You’d just throw yourself at silver sugar until you passed out from exhaustion. Which you have before.”
“What if it’s just an excuse so you’ll carry me to bed?”
Such underhanded schemes weren’t like Anne, but he humored her just the same. “Just ask me then. No need to go to such extremes.”
“Hey, you guys still awake? Is this a bad time?”
At Mythril’s voice, Anne scooted out of Shall’s laps, putting a respectable distance between them. She ignored the disgruntled expression on his face. “No, we were just talking. Did we wake you?”
“Nah, I wanted to check the moon. It’s overhead, which means it’s now officially your wedding day!” He sauntered over to them and held out two small boxes. “And I wanted to be the first one to give you your gifts!”
Shall and Anne shared a look before taking the gifts. Shall’s was a pendant in the shape a golden full moon, the metal so polished it reflected his face. He glanced over to Anne. She had received the same thing.
“They’re matching necklaces!” Mythril exclaimed, taking his own out. “When we’re apart and you get lonely, just look at it and remember we’re all under the same sky, watching the same moon.”
Huh. Did he listen in on them or was it just an incredible coincidence? Then again, it was possible Mythril had picked up Anne’s underlying fears over the past weeks — he could be surprisingly perceptive.
Anne, whose emotions were already running high, was once again on the verge of tears, but she looked touched, rather than sad.
“Oh, Mythril…”
“H-hey, are you crying? Why are you crying? Do you hate it that much? Don’t cry, Anne, I’ll get you something else! S-shall fen Shall, help! Do something!”
“They’re tears of happiness, dummy.”
“Huh? Don’t be stupid, how can you cry from being happy?”
Anne shook her head with a small laugh, scooping the tiny fairy and bringing him close to her chest. She cupped one hand around his body and gently laid her cheek on the top of his head in the best approximation of a hug she could manage considering their size difference.
“Thank you so much, Mythril Lid Pod. I love it,” she whispered, overflowing with gratefulness.
He clutched at her front, cheeks pink and eyes downcast in embarrassment. “...you’re welcome.”
Anne set him down, wiping her eyes, and stood. “I just keep crying lately. I’m going to freshen up. I’ll be right back.”
Shall nodded. Mythril sat down on Shall’s pillow, playing with his necklace. It was quiet, if not for the occasional sniff coming from the small fairy. Shall didn’t comment on it.
“Hey, Shall fen Shall?” Mythril said after a while.
“Hm?”
Another sniff, longer. “I think I get it. Happy tears.”
Shall snorted softly.
“Hey, Shall fen Shall?”
“What?”
“Can I sleep on your pillow tonight?”
Looked like Anne wasn’t the only one hit with a bout of nostalgia and dreading separation.
It had been a while since they all slept in the same room. It was a necessity at first, born from the fact Anne barely had enough money to afford even a single room in inns. Even after she’d won the thousand cress prize in Philax, she kept her frugal ways.
It was only after the second royal fair, once Anne made sugar master and established her reputation, earning herself a commendable wage, that they started to rent extra beds or, on rare occasions, extra rooms.
And then everything went down the drain when Rafael fen Rafael returned, upheaving their normalcy. Once things had settled down, their new normal was for Mythril to sleep on his own while Shall kept watch over Anne, sitting in a chair or lying in nearby bedding.
This would be the first (and probably the last) time in months they would share a room.
“Fine.”
“Please, please, please! I promise I won’t make a peep! I’ll even— what did you say?”
Shall laid down, covering himself with his blanket. “Go to sleep, Mythril Lid Pod. It’s late.”
When Anne came back, she found Shall and Mythril lying side by side. The smaller fairy was sprawled out like a star, his eyes closed. Not wanting to be left out, she slipped in with them. Shall scooted backwards to give her more space.
“Good night, you two,” Anne said.
“G’night Anne… Shall fen Shhhh…”
It wasn’t long before the two were asleep. Shall adjusted the covers over them and watched over the two people most precious to him.
--
“Don’t!”
“You can’t!”
“Someone, stop him!”
“Easy for you to say!”
“What’s all this ruckus about?” Bridget asked, pulling away from where she was putting the final touches on Anne’s make-up. She frowned at the muffled screaming. The door to the dressing room shook and rattled, as if someone was leaning against it.
“Bridget, you gotta help us!” Elliot shouted from behind. “Lock the door!”
“What’s going on, Elliot?”
“Move aside,” Shall said. His voice might be muffled, but his annoyance was clear.
“I told you man; it’s bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the ceremony!”
“That’s ridiculous. I should be able to see my wife whenever I want.”
“You’re not married yet, you dumbass. Show some patience.” It was Kat.
“Actually, they are. They signed the paperwork months ago.”
Mythril gasped, as if realizing he had let slip something he shouldn’t have.
Too late. It was like someone had sucked all the sound out. You could hear people’s breathing with how quiet it was.
“What?” pretty much everyone shouted in unison. Bridget turned to Anne, gaping, whereas Noah tilted his head in confusion, not understanding the fuss.
Anne would have buried her face in her hands if she didn’t risk ruining her make-up. Of course this would get brought up right before the ceremony and in front of all of their friends. Gathering the poofy skirt of her wedding dress, she made her way out of the dressing room, intent to explain the situation.
Instantly, six pairs of hands blocked Shall’s line of sight. The fairy huffed.
“When Shall and I looked for someone who could officiate our marriage, most of the priests we asked refused to.” Many of them had squirmed at the idea of a human and a fairy marrying, the result of decades, if not centuries, of subconsciously ingrained bias. “I told Hugh about this, and he said that as silver sugar viscount, he was authorized to oversee our marriage. So we signed the paperwork with him and Mythril as our witnesses.”
The silent was thick and heavy, everyone processing the information. It was Elliot who broke down first, bursting with laughter.
“That’s— that’s—” He could barely speak with how hard he was laughing. “Oh man, and you guys call me a schemer.”
“It wasn’t like we were trying to hide it!” Anne retorted, cheeks puffing. “It was just a formality.”
“Only you would call being married on paper ‘a formality.’”
“Because it is!”
“Sorry to break it you, kiddo, but that paperwork is as binding as any vow. As far as the kingdom’s concerned, you’ve been husband and wife for months now,” Hugh added with a smirk. He looked all too pleased and amused at Anne’s embarrassment. “Though I suppose if you asked Shall, he’d say it’s been even longer.”
The fairy crossed his arms, but didn’t deny Hugh’s claims. Anne was glad for the heavy layers on her face because she was sure her blush would have been as bright as the sun. She certainly felt as warm.
“You look very pretty, Anne,” Keith said, changing the subject. It triggered a flood of compliments from the other guests, their kind words overlapping.
“Yeah, you look great!”
“Beautiful.”
“Hey, where’s your veil?”
“I got it!”
“You’re all doing this on purpose,” Shall grumbled. He could easily have plowed through the crowd to check on Anne or moved aside the hands blocking his vision, but he had grown tolerant of his friends’ shenanigans.
Anne was filled with a surge of appreciation for her fiancé. He had come so far compared to when they first met.
“If you’re all ready, how about we proceed with the ceremony?” Glen said.
“Go on ahead, everyone. There’s something I want to say to Shall.”
Her friends looked at Anne, then back at Shall, uncertain.
“Shall, are your eyes closed?”
“They are.”
“There you have it. I promise I’ll be quick.”
Satisfied, they all filed down the hallway, headed for the altar, leaving Anne alone with Shall.
Given the opportunity, she took in her fiancé’s (husband’s) appearance. He had always been a beautiful man, with fair smooth skin, glossy dark hair, high cheekbones, and a sharp jaw. His striking features made people’s heads turn.
Some might find his wedding outfit simple — a long dark tunic over breeches, with jewel-patterned embroidery lining his shoulders, his sleeves, and his lapels — but in Anne’s opinion, it only made him more handsome, if that was even possible.
“So you’re allowed to stare all you want, but I can’t look at you?”
“Just a little longer. Once the ceremony starts, you can look.”
Anne grabbed and squeezed his hands, a small compensation for all his patience. His hands slowly traveled up her arms, her shoulders, and curled around her jaw, as if trying to perceive her through touch since his eyes weren’t allowed. Anne felt goosebumps at the feel of Shall’s strong and slender fingers on her bare skin.
“You better not shy away,” he breathed.
“I-I won’t.” Anne felt tongue-tied by their proximity. She felt like she was getting sucked in, but she resisted the urge to move in for a kiss — she wasn’t sure she’d find the strength of will to pull away. “Sorry about earlier. I forgot to tell you about that little tradition.”
“It’s fine. I waited years, I can wait a few more minutes.”
She smiled, even if he couldn’t see it. “Then let’s not waste any more time. I’ll be going first.”
She turned around, but was stopped in her tracks as arms wrapped around her waist, firm and unyielding. There was a puff of hot air on the back of her neck, and Anne’s whole body tensed when she felt a pair of lips on her skin. She squeaked as they moved up to behind her ear. Her legs trembled and her heart was pounding in her temples.
“S-Shall…”
“Tradition says I can’t look, not that I can’t touch or taste.”
Anne’s mouth was dry. She was frozen in surprise and excitement, but just as quickly as he had embraced her, Shall let her go. There was a satisfied and smug look on his face, even with his eyes closed.
“See you soon, my future wife.”
She didn’t need to be told twice, and basically sprinted out of there before Shall got more handsy and frayed her nerves. She met with Glen right outside the doors leading to the altar. He had offered to give her away, as she didn’t have any blood family, and Anne couldn’t think of anyone better suited for the role than a father himself.
“All set?”
She took a deep breath. Her heart was doing flip-flops in her chest and her hands were faintly shaking as she linked arms with Glen. “All set.”
He smiled at her, calm and reassuring. All their friends were seated and chatting with one another, but the second she stepped in, they turned to look at her. Elliot, Nadir and King hooted, Kat, Keith, and Valentine waved, Orland nodded and Bridget smiled at her, and Mythril jumped up and down in joy.
Anne waved as she passed each row of guests. She deliberately avoided looking at Shall, waiting for her at the altar. She knew whatever expression he made would make her weak in the knees.
Glen led her down the aisle, and she swapped his arm for Shall’s. She kept looking at her feet. It would be embarrassing to stumble and fall at this point.
Finally, once they stood in front of Hugh, their officiant, she allowed herself a glance at her fiancé (and on paper husband), immediately regretting and glad for her earlier choice.
She had been right. Shall was looking at her like she was the sun and he a sunflower. His eyes were intense, half-lidded and heady, and his strong features showed a fierce warmth and passion. She felt both like running away and wanting to stay in place to bask in such a rare expression.
“Alright everyone, I’ll be officiating this ceremony. I won’t bore you with a long speech,” Hugh said. The attendees got quiet, expectant. “Anne Halford, will you take Shall fen Shall for a husband?”
“I do.”
“Shall fen Shall, will you take Anne Halford for a wife? Will you love her from now on for better or for worse? In sickness and in health? In silver sugar obsession and in creative drought? In—”
Everyone snickered and even Anne giggled quietly. It was obvious Hugh was doing this to aggravate Shall, who bore the unnecessarily prolonged vows with admirable patience. Anne could tell when he tuned Hugh out, because he rolled his eyes and decided to look at her instead. They shared a smile, expressions soft with love, as they waited for Hugh’s speech to end.
“I do.”
“Good. Any objections from the guests?”
“None! You know there’s none!” Mythril yelled. “Hurry it up!”
“Then by the powers conferred to me as silver sugar viscount, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss—”
Shall didn’t need to be told twice nor was he going to wait a second longer. In one swift move, he’d lifted Anne’s veil and leaned in to kiss his proper wife.
“—the bride. You know, it’s rude to interrupt people when they’re talking.”
Cheers and shouts and clapping and confetti and flower petals burst all around them, swallowing Hugh’s friendly teasing. Not that Anne and Shall paid any mind to anything that wasn’t their spouse. They pulled back from their kiss, grinning, forehead and nose touching. Their happiness was obvious.
And just as all those weeks ago when they received the invitation, everyone shared the same thought.
It’s about time.
