of course i had to add my favorite svu ship 😩😩 my two favorite characters and they’re both IN LOVE!!!!!
casey’s favorite pet name to call alex is honey
alex’s favorite pet name to call casey is baby
alex is more likely to alternate between different pet names. she’s much more romantic behind the scenes and out of the courthouse
alex loves to plan their dates!!! she makes the reservations and keeps casey up to date on the details :)
she also always drives. partly because casey is her passenger princess but also partly because she has a need to be absolutely punctual and she becomes a bit of a back seat driver when she’s not in the driver’s seat
casey wouldn’t call herself a passenger princess though. she would just say alex likes driving, which could be true in some senses. probably both.
they make each other coffee in the morning!! casey makes alex’s favorite alex make’s casey’s 🥺
alex always takes casey out for a drink after a case is closed
oftentimes after a long day at work too
alex tries to pick up the tab every time but casey found a new loophole of stealing alex’s card when she isn’t paying attention so casey gets to pay in the end
casey always stays with alex when alex is having trouble beating her insomnia. even if casey is tired, she always prioritizes alex’s sleep health— sometimes to the point where she becomes exhausted beyond her means
if they ever went out to a karaoke bar, casey would be the one getting alex onstage
any time one of them is present while the other is prosecuting, all they can do is stare
alex, of course, will put on a show
casey will too if she’s feeling bold
they both show off to each other in the court room
they always consider themselves lucky that they’re both prosecutors; they’ve thought of way too many dirty scenarios about them duking it out in the courtroom as prosecutor and defender
they both get into heated arguments with the squad sometimes, but it’s easier for them to keep calm towards the others when they’re working on a case together
they argue with each other over cases too. usually they’re just small back-and-forths, but when they do fight during cases, it’s bad. never physical, but sometimes they get so loud that the squad gets nervous
outside of their offices and the courtroom, their arguments are much more respectful/ considerate. it’s hard for them to be completely reasonable when they’re fighting about a case because they’re both equally as passionate.
THEY CUDDLE EVERY NIGHT!!!!!!!!

Chapter 11
A brief interlude before I reunite them
Summary: Alex and Casey are called to the precinct where they find Olivia trying to get a little girl to open up.
Warnings: Usual SVU things and a little bit of suicidal idealization
Chapter 11/?
Tumblr media
Casey paced restlessly in her living room, the rhythmic sound of her footsteps on the hardwood floor echoing throughout the apartment. Each passing second stretched into an agonizing eternity as she waited for Alex to come home. She had texted her that she was going to get a drink with Olivia and Elliot, and she should be home by now. Normally, she wouldn't feel this uneasy, but the recent threats made towards Alex because of the case had her on edge all day.
The sound of the doorbell made her jump, jolting Casey from her spiraling thoughts. With trembling hands, she reached for the doorknob, her breath catching in her throat as she swung the door open to reveal Elliot standing on her doorstep. Immediately, she felt nauseous, knowing that if Elliot was here, something had happened. “What are you doing here? Where's Alex?” Her dread threatened to suffocate her.
Elliot's expression was grave, his usually stoic demeanor cracked with emotion. “Casey…” he began, using the voice she knew he used whenever he was talking to the family of victims.
She brought her hand up to her face. “No, no, don't—” Her words came out in a panicked rush as she braced herself for what Elliot would tell her.
“We were leaving the bar,” Elliot's voice cracked. “It was a drive-by. They shot her.”
Bile rose in her throat as the weight of Elliot's words crashed over her like a tidal wave. “Where is she?” she demanded hoarsely, already running through scenarios in her head. People got shot all the time in their line of work, and they made it. Alex would be fine. She was relentless; a single bullet wouldn’t take her out.
Elliot's gaze dropped to the floor. “Casey, she didn't make it.”
Casey's knees buckled beneath her as the ground seemed to crumble away. “Why are you doing this? What is wrong with you?” Her voice cracked with anguish. “She would never—she... she can't be—”
Elliot stepped forward, wrapping his arms around Casey in a futile attempt to offer comfort. “I got you,” he murmured, his voice thick with sorrow. “I'm so sorry, Casey.” She clutched her arms around him with so much force it hurt.
“I can't... I can't breathe,” she choked out, her words muffled against Elliot's chest as she clung to him, her world falling apart in an instant.
____________________________________________
Olivia stood beside Casey, her heart heavy with the weight of the task before her. She watched as her friend sat motionless on the edge of the bed, her eyes vacant and distant, lost in the grief of losing Alex. Olivia hated to see her like this, knowing Alex was alive, but she couldn’t say anything. She promised Alex she would take care of Casey, and part of that included not letting her know the truth.
“Honey, you have to get ready,” Olivia spoke softly, reaching out to place her hand on the redhead's shoulder.
Casey flinched at the contact, her body tensing. She turned to look at her friend, her eyes hollow and empty, devoid of any of the spark that was usually there. “I don't want to go,” she whispered.
“I know, sweetheart,” Olivia replied, her heart aching. She reached out, wrapping an arm around her friend, offering what little comfort she could.
Casey didn't hug Olivia back, just let herself be held for a few seconds. “I need to get Niki ready,” she mumbled, her voice disconnected as she struggled to stand up and tackle the task of getting her daughter ready for Alex’s funeral.
“Hey, that's okay,” Olivia stopped her, “Melinda is with her getting her ready. Let me help you.”
Casey's shoulders sagged in defeat as she allowed Olivia to lead her to the closet. She stood there silently, her gaze fixed on the rows of clothes before her, unable to muster the strength to make even the simplest of decisions. Olivia noticed and picked up a simple black dress, helping Casey into it. She pulled the zipper up and went to the bathroom to grab a brush, coming back to style red hair into a simple ponytail.
“I can't do this without her, Liv,” Casey whispered, her voice cracking with emotion as she reached out to grasp Olivia's hand.
“Yes, you can, Case,” Olivia replied, squeezing Casey's hand in reassurance. “You're not alone. You have all of us. We'll help you with anything you need.”
Casey shook her head, the void look in her face coming back as she sat on the bed once more. “I just need her back.”
____________________________________________
Casey was exhausted; she had stopped being able to sleep at night, getting a few hours now and then when her body finally allowed her. Despite being exhausted in every way, she still had a daughter to take care of, so she had spent the afternoon trying to distract Niki with a trip to the zoo. The time off that Donnelly had practically forced her to take was driving her crazy. She didn’t want free time; she needed distractions, something to keep her from spending the day consumed by memories and grief.
Fin was the one who suggested the zoo, and much to her surprise and slight annoyance, the squad had shown up to spend the day with them. She loved them and was thankful for all they were doing, but they kept treating her like if they let her out of their sight she would throw herself of a bridge
She had spent the afternoon walking behind her daughter as she talked everyone's ear off with animal facts. It brought her a little bit of comfort to see some of the personality they had worked so hard to get her to show was coming back, especially when she and Munch scared Fin with every fact they had about spiders, snakes, and bugs, all of which Niki had learned from the book Alex got her.
Casey had dodged everyone's questions about her every time one of them walked next to her, insisting she was fine, even though they knew she was lying through her teeth. When they finally got home, all of them practically insisted that a night of takeout and a movie was needed. She humored them and watched as Fin and Munch argued over what movie to watch while Olivia ordered takeout for everyone. From the corner of her eye, she could see Elliot and George playing with Niki, the girl happily distracted by them. It was almost eight, and she knew she would have to put Niki to bed soon, hoping that she would be tired enough from the day to not fight her on it.
She took a deep breath and walked over to her daughter, already picturing how this was going to go down. “Alright, come on, sweetheart, it's time to say goodnight.” Niki didn't look up or even move as she kept playing with the Legos that were scattered in front of her, simply shaking her head and protesting stubbornly, “I don't wanna.”
Casey let out a small sigh, rubbing a hand over her face as she tried to keep her composure. She could feel everyone's eyes on them, and she really didn't want to fight with her eight-year-old. “I don't want to tell you again; please go brush your teeth and put on your PJs. I’ll read you a story when you're done.”
This time, Niki did turn to look at her, defiance marked all over her features. “No!”
Casey's patience started to wane, the mix of exhaustion and frustration getting her dangerously close to snapping. She tried again, ashamed this was happening in front of everyone she had been trying so hard to convince she was fine. “Niki—”
“I said I don't want to, I wish you had gone away instead of Mamma!” Niki's words hit Casey like a punch to the gut, and she felt tears pricking at the corners of her eyes.
The room went completely quiet the second the words were out of Niki's mouth. Everyone looked between mother and child, noticing the way regret immediately formed on Niki's face when she saw how hurt her mom looked. The tension was cut by Elliot clearing his throat and stepping in to pick Niki up. “Okay, come on, kid, that's enough. Let's get you to bed.” He disappeared down the hall with her, leaving the remaining group to see a still shell-shocked Casey blinking away tears.
George stepped forward, going to place a hand on the redhead's shoulder, which was quickly shrugged off. “Casey—” his tone was soft with concern, but Casey did not have the energy anymore to be on the receiving end of his compassion.
Before any of them could say anything else, she turned around. “I'm going to bed,” she announced, her voice strained as she made her way to her bedroom, letting the tears she had been holding fall free. She knew Niki was hurting, struggling to make sense of losing Alex, but Casey couldn’t help but feel the weight of Niki’s grief pressing down on her right next to her own. As she closed the door behind her, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was failing both her daughter and Alex.
____________________________________________
Casey woke to the faint glow of moonlight seeping through the curtains, casting gentle shadows across her bedroom. Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, she glanced at the clock on her bedside table; it was well past midnight. She doesn’t even remember falling asleep, only that she had broken down into sobs as soon as she was alone in her room. She hadn't even had the energy to feel bad about leaving everyone in her home and Elliot to deal with Niki; she was just tired and cried herself to sleep. Running a hand through her hair and looking around the room, she tried to figure out what had woken her, the answer standing at the door with her teddy bear in her arms.
She sat up against the headboard and looked at her daughter's blotchy cheeks that had been streaked by tears. “Mommy?” her voice was small and shy, reminding Casey of how it had been when she was first with them.
“What's wrong, sweetheart?” she asked, her voice still heavy with sleep.
Niki hesitated for a moment, shifting nervously in the doorway before finally speaking again through sniffles. “I'm sorry” she choked out “I didn't mean what I said. I don't want you to go away.”
Casey's heart clenched at her daughter's words; she would be lying if she said her daughters words hadn’t hurt like hell, but she knew she wasn't the only one struggling to cope with Alex’s death. Swallowing the lump in her throat, she reached out a hand, patting the empty space on the bed beside her and pulling back the covers. She watched as Niki hesitated for a second before making her way to what was Alex's side of the bed, climbing in.
When Niki didn’t immediately crawl into her arms like she always did, Casey cupped her cheek and gave her a kiss on her forehead. “I know you didn't mean it, sweetheart.”
Tears spilled from Niki's eyes as she threw herself against her mother, burying her face against Casey's chest. “I miss Mamma,” she sobbed, her words muffled by the fabric of Casey's, well, Alex’s hoodie.
Casey's own tears welled up as she held her daughter close, running her fingers through brown hair. “I miss her too, baby,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “So, so much.”
Niki hiccupped, her breath catching in her throat as she struggled to speak through her tears. “Promise you won't leave me too?”
“I promise, sweetheart,” she vowed, and placed another kiss on top of her hair. “I'll never leave you. I'll always be here, okay?” Niki nodded, clutching onto Casey as if afraid she might disappear.

I read a post where it says about someone scoffing whenever somebody told him that he liked the girl and yet he looks at her first just to see if she was also laughing when someone cracks a joke, and an idea just came to my mind. Enjoy! xx
The first time Casey met Alex, she felt inferior next to her. Casey doesn’t fold, she never cowers— but with Alex, she, well, kind of did.
But, who doesn’t, right? It is THE great Alexandra Cabot. Plus, she was her predecessor.
“ You know, We’ve gone over all my questions. I think you’re ready, ” Casey uttered.
As if on instincts, Alex asked “ Are you? ” and if Casey was offended, she did great hiding it, because she just gave Alex an empathetic look, instead.
It was too late when Alex realized that she was below the belt but she couldn’t do anything about that so she just did what she knew was best to do. Apologize.
“ Casey, I’m sorry, that was out of line, ”
And Casey, being the most ever empathetic person that anyone she’ll encounter would ever meet, she showed Alex a reassuring smile, as if telling her that it’s okay, she understands.
“ It’s gotta be hard to be on that side of the desk, ” Casey uttered in which Alex agrees.
The first time Alex met Casey, she was taken aback just a little bit… Okay, fine, a LOT. She knew Casey, she heard about how great she was in homicide, and if there’s something Alex Cabot respects and looks up to so much— it is being great at what you do.
But, of course, she wouldn’t admit it. She’s THE Alexandra Cabot, after all.
But Casey is THE Casey Novak. Although different from the one that she used to know and the one that people who were working with her knew, it did not changed the fact that whichever unit you place Casey into, she will rise.
“ So, Casey Novak, ” Alex uttered, breaking the silence.
“ What about her? ” Olivia asked.
“ She was the one who replaced me. Is she even worth the position? ” Alex asked.
Olivia’s brows furrowed at that and her jaw tensed.
“ Casey’s good at what she does, in fact, she’s just as great as you were, if not better, ” she defended.
Alex’s shoulders relaxes a bit at that but the slight shock in her face didn’t passed Olivia’s eyes.
“ Wow. You’ve bonded with her, ” Alex stated.
Liv smirked as she nods her head. “ What are you now— jealous? ” she asks, teasing.
Alex’s jaw clenched as she fixes her eyeglasses. “ Oh, please. ”
The first time Olivia met Alex after the incident, Alex looked so lost. Before, she always shows up prepared, but that day, she wasn’t.
There really was a difference between being a victim and being the one defending the former; and that day, Alex was the victim.
So if she has the upper hand, she doesn’t have any idea.
“ When I was a prosecutor, I never went to court without a plan, ” Alex uttered, sighing.
Elliot give Alex an empathetic smile before replying “ you've never been the victim. ”
Alex just sighed at that. “ I should be trying the bastard who shot that little boy. ”
Elliot chuckles lightly as he shakes his head.
“ Casey would be. She knows what she’s doing, and she’s really, really great at it. You should trust her, ”
Alex blows out some air out of her mouth.
“ I do. It’s just that… ”
“ She took your job, I understand. If ever someone took after my position, I wouldn’t trust them to be as great as I am, too. ” Elliot reassured.
Alex was the one who gives respect to someone who does a very good job at what they do, but she wasn’t the person who trusts someone, especially if it’s her job that they would be doing.
Or she wasn’t the one who easily trusts, at least.
The first time Olivia met Casey, she finds her… pretty annoying.
But if Casey were anything, she wasn’t that. In contrast, she was very passionate, and compassionate— which each and everyone from the squad loved about her.
Especially the ice queen herself.
“ It looks like pharmaceuticals to me. It’s in the warrant, bag it. ”
“ Who the hell are you? ” Liv asked, sounding annoyed.
“ That’s our new ADA, ” Elliot answered instead. “ Casey Novak, Olivia Benson. Olivia, this is Casey Novak, ” he introduced the two with each other, gesturing them.
And Casey can be a bit cocky, too.
“ Do I know you? ” Casey asked.
“ Yeah, shortstop, cop's team, ” Elliot replied, gesturing Casey to come with him. “ Come here. ”
Casey smirked and squint her eyes. But nevertheless, she followed Elliot. “ Oh, right. Didn't recognize you when you weren't covered in my dust, ” she fires with a smug grin plastered on her face.
Elliot could only answer “ that's very good. ”
The second time Olivia met Alex, she seems disappointed. It’s as if she’s looking for something, expecting to find it, yet, she didn’t.
Well, she is.. looking… for someone.
“ Did you find it yet? ” Olivia asked Alex who’s obviously roaming her eyes around.
Alex stopped and looks at Liv. “ I don’t know what you’re talking about, ”
Liv chuckles. “ Okay. But you will never find her. Nor see her, not right now, at least, ” she uttered.
“ What happened? ” Alex asked, concern is evident in her voice.
“ Censure, ”
Alex felt her knees weakens. “ Oh, my, ”
The second time Liv met Casey, was the second time Alex has literally met her, too. It was after her censure. And for the first time in forever, Liv saw a glimpse of light in Alex’s eyes.
“ So, you’re back, ” Alex says, breaking the ice.
Casey give Alex a small smile as she nods her head.
“ It seems so, ” she then shrugged. “ I still have to prove myself, tho, ”
Alex wasn’t the one to smile wide. That’s why she had perfected this signature look of her: the half-smile-half-smirk that everyone knew.
But that day, Liv saw what her genuine smile is.
All because of Casey.
“ I wish you the best on that, then, ” Alex responds. “ Kick their ass, ” she added.
“ Thanks, Alex, ” Casey smiled sweetly. “ Have a safe trip on your flight to Congo, ” she added, tapping Alexandra’s shoulder.
“ Thank you. I’ll be going now, ”
Casey nods. “ Yeah, don’t let us take a hold of you for long, ” she replied, chuckling lightly.
The third time Casey and Alex met each other, they shared a case.
They always say that you couldn’t put fire and ice together because it wouldn’t just work. And, oh, boy, was it true.
Or so we thought.
Alex is an ice queen, and just like an ice, her moves were calm, careful, and calculated. Contrary to Casey, the fiery redhead, who was like a fire— hot, unpredictable, fierce. Two different attributes, but both were just as dangerous.
And so they clashed. Why wouldn’t they, fire is the opposite of ice. You can’t place a fire together with ice in a same room, because one of them will just always end up burning.
But, we were, gladly, proven wrong. As the popular saying goes by: opposite attracts.
“ What the hell is your problem? ” Casey asked, a little bit annoyed.
“ Your techniques, ” Alex answered nonchalantly.
Casey’s brows furrowed at that. “ What about them? ” she asked.
“ They’re.. kind of reckless, ” Alex uttered.
Casey squint her eyes then shakes her head. “ So I’ve been told, ”
“ Maybe tone it down a little bit and calculate your moves, instead? ” Alex suggested with a soft voice.
Casey just shakes her head eagerly, saying “ no way. I like it the way that I do, thank you very much, ”
Alex could only sigh at that.
Casey nibbled her bottom lip then heaves a sigh before opening her mouth to speak.
“ Alex, you have to trust me. You need to try to, at least, ”
Alex creases her forehead. “ I do trust you, ” she defended.
“ No, you don’t, ” Casey replied, shaking her head. “ I’m trying, really, to win this case the way you want it and yet you can’t see it. What you can only see is me, being reckless. I know I was, well, I still am. I got censured, for damn sake. But haven’t I proven myself enough again already? ” she then asks.
Alex winced when she saw pain in Casey’s eyes, then fixed her eyeglasses to help her compose herself.
“ I’m sorry, Case.. It’s not that I don’t trust you. It’s just that.. ”
“ What? ” Casey asks but Alex just kept mum.
For the very first time, Alex was speechless.
“ We’re both tired, we’ve been going through this case since the morning at it’s close to midnight now. Good night, Alex. I’ll just talk to you tomorrow, ” Casey then give Alex an understanding smile before she turned her back and make her way out of their shared office when she felt fingers wrapped around her arm.
“ Casey, wait, ”
Casey turns to face Alex again.
“ I’m sorry. I trust you. Okay, we’ll talk tomorrow. But, please, let me accompany you home? ” Alex pleaded with a hopeful smile.
Casey contemplated for a second but when she saw the way Alex was looking and smiling at her, how can she not say yes?
“ Okay, ” Casey said softly, nodding her head.
Alex’s smile grew bigger. “ Okay? ” she repeated. “ Okay, ” she then nods her haid. “ Just give me a second to fix my things, I’d be just quick— ”
“ Alex.. ” Casey held Alex’s hand to forearm to stop her. “ Hey, sweetie, stop. You don’t have to panic. Take your time, I’m not going anywhere, ” she then smiled sweetly which made Alex, too.
“ Okay… ”
“ Okay. ”
Everyone can see the chemistry that radiates off Casey and Alex, and Alex will always huff whenever someone will tease her about it, or she’d just hear someone mentioning it.
But every time the squad gets out together, and someone will crack a joke, her eyes will always find Casey in the room of people just to see if she was laughing, too. Every time Casey would be out of Alex’s sight even just for a second, she would worry and would look for her. When Casey’s talking about something that really interests her, Alex was the one to pay the most attention, as if taking a mental note of it, afraid that she might forget it and she might hurt and/or disappoint Casey if ever that happens.
And, Casey.. well, Casey would just dismiss the idea of it and laugh it off. To quote her exact words: “ Stop it, you guys. There’s no way. It’s just.. there’s no way. Way too impossible, ”
Yet, every time she will look at Alex, you can see the admiration in her eyes. Every time hers and Alex’s eyes will meet, she will have this flustered face. And every time she will see Alex being “ touchy ” with someone else, you could see the fire in her eyes, saying that she was hurt, and feeling envy of that someone, whoever they were, and jealous.
And they could go on forever about denying their feelings for each other, but they wouldn’t last seeing one another being held by someone, and that someone wasn’t them.
Olivia can go on and on and on in telling us how many times Casey and Alex have met, and what were they like,
And Elliot might not shut about how many times I have met Alex and Casey and the things that I kept on noticing about them every time we meet, and I know that all of you would never get tired hearing them all…
But that’s enough for now. Today, we’re meeting, and it doesn’t matter if it’s our first time meeting each other, or if it’s eternity, but one thing’s for sure, we were all meeting for the first time to witness a great love story unfold before our eyes.
“ Casey, Alex, things hasn’t been so easy for the two of you, but you’ve got through with it, stronger. I’ve seen lots of kinds of love and yours is one that I really look up to— unbreakable. Stay whipped, Case! ” Elliot, Casey’s best man, ended his speech, raising his champagne glass, gesturing it as a salute to the newlyweds.
“ If there’s someone who deserves to be that happy, “ Alex’s best man, Liv, gestured at them before continuing “ it’s the two of you, Counsellors, ” she then smiled and raises her glass of champagne. “ It’s such an honour to be one of those who have witnessed how the love story of you two develops and grows from being Alex’s simple crush towards Casey, to colleagues, friends, and now, as each other’s confidant and lover. May your love continues to grow as you grow old together while growing as an individual beside each other. And, oh, Alex; my dear Alex, my ever-smitten-to-Casey friend, Alex, may you always stay that way. Cheers! ” Olivia then take a sip of her champagne causing the crowd to went wild. Elliot then clank a utensil lightly on his glass, which everyone mimicked while shouting “ kiss! ” in which Casey and Alex are both happy to obliged.

Needle in a Haystack
Tumblr media
Casey Novak x Alex Cabot,
Warnings: Fluff, emotional hurt / comfort (minor), grilled cheese, ice cream and existential crisis, mentions of baking gingerbread.
About 5K words so if you’d prefer to read on AO3 it’s here
A continuation of the Welcome Home Surprises and Five Times Calex ‘verse
Needle in a Haystack
There was a thing about working long hours that Casey just inherently understood – like, legitimately. She had no leg to stand on if it came to pontificating on the benefits of getting home in time for dinner – even when making that a late dinner. But even she knew to not let the habit stretch on for too long. With the kind of work they put themselves through, taking some time away from it was among the most important things to do – a lesson she had very much learnt the hard way.
As had Alex, supposedly.
But as Casey sighed quietly into their too-silent apartment, alone for yet another night in a string that had gotten so long she’d stopped keeping count, she couldn’t help but feel that lump of concern growing heavier as the mounted clock in her study ticked later and later. Finally, just as she was about to throw in the towel with the damnable tort reform article she’d been trying to edit for several days now, the sound of the key sliding home in its lock instantly caught her attention – each tumbler rumbling and clicking to announce their owner’s arrival home.
Finally -home.
Quickly crossing the hallway Casey was there as Alex finally stepped through the threshold. She’d been bundled up in her heavy winter coat, the scarf Casey had gifted her last Christmas slowly uncurled to reveal the face she knew so well, loved so well, looking tired and drawn, somehow even paler than usual. Even once the jacket was shrugged off of her shoulders and been hung up in the closet the blonde looked as if the weight of the world remained sat on her shoulders.
And yet, as blue eyes finally found hers in the dim lighting of the hall Casey saw a lighter spark flash through them. Answering with a soft smile of her own she took a few steps forward, automatically reaching out to steady Alex as she precariously attempted to wriggle her foot out of her boots. Getting to touch Alex, feel the soft warmth of her skin as her jumper rode up, letting Casey’s supportive grip curl round her hip in an all too familiar way, elicited such a strong feeling in her gut that Casey was caught off-guard with the intensity of her own reaction.
She floundered. So uncharacteristic of her these days, suddenly too overwhelmed to know how to even broach greeting the woman who was standing now, holding onto her forearms – her best friend, the love of her life – who looked as if a stern glare would knock her over.  How was Casey supposed to ask any more of her, try to explain she missed her, had waited for as long as possible to share dinner together just as they’d promised they would, without adding to the Sisyphean workload and guilt that she knew Alex already took on every day.
So, swallowing heavily and holding Alex’s gaze as she curled a hand around her elbow Casey fell back on to what had always come most naturally to her. Caring for Alex,
“Can I get you some food?”
After having placed a quick peck to the side of Casey’s cheek Alex was already stepping away from her with a soft shake of her head,
“No.”
“A drink then?” Casey tried to keep her voice light – a veiled attempt at hiding her underlying worry, worries, from Alex. The blonde sighed tiredly, tipped her head back to the ceiling as she seemed to try to fill her lungs and expel the way the day had dragged her down.
She finally turned back to Casey with a wry smile,
“Yes, but too much, so no. Thank you love.”
“Alright,” Casey trailed her hand across Alex’s waist as she headed back to the kitchen to put the leftovers away. She called back over her shoulder as she went “Do you want me to run you a bath or get the shower running for you?”
Her quiet but continued effort to find some way – any way – to help Alex feel better made the blonde’s heart swell. She knew – very much – how down and awkward she was to live with in general, let alone for the past several months. And yet, despite it all - and her own increasing workload - Casey, her adoring loving and supportive Casey, was still there for her every night; doing all she could to try make her feel better whilst not crowding or smothering her. It was a tightrope which even Alex didn’t know where the edge was and yet Casey seemed to dance across it with increasing regularity.
Honestly if Alex thought about it too much, she felt like she would start crying and she didn't know if she had it in her to be able to stop.
Still awaiting an answer Casey turned back to look at Alex and instantly she could see the battle being waged in front of her. It made her heart ache even more fiercely than before,
“Oh Al,” she curled her hand round Alex's neck and then up to cup the back of her head, encouraging the exhausted blonde to rest her head on her shoulder, which Alex automatically did – just short of burrowing into Casey’s neck where she took several deep, almost heaving, breaths,  "Oh sweetheart."
Casey pressed a kiss to the crown of Alex’s head before turning her own head and pressing her cheek there instead. She let the moment of comfort last as long as Alex needed - no more, no less.
When Alex’s breathing slowly evened-out she pulled back, and Casey sought out her gaze,
“What do you need? What can I do right now baby?”
Despite being able to swallow back all the tears Alex still felt the need to wipe at her eyes and sniff heavily, she chuckled darkly at herself and Casey just knew she was trying to wordlessly apologise for looking like a mess. As if Alex Cabot could ever look like a mess.
Reaching out Casey took hold of Alex’s hands as they went to wrap around her own waist, her go to move when she was feeling anxious and vulnerable. Instead, she pressed gentle kisses across Alex’s knuckles till the blonde was smiling softly at her. Seeing the expression Casey tried again,
“Al, honey, what do you need?”
“Right now?”
“Yep, right now. Name it.”
“A nap.” That at least drew a genuine laugh from Casey and she happily tugged Alex along the corridor towards their bedroom,
“Then a nap we shall have.”
***
Casey awoke sometime later to an empty bed.
Slightly concerned given how quietly distraught Alex had been earlier she decided now was not the time to give the blonde more space. Still wiping the sleep from the corner of her eyes she followed some faint rustling noises to suddenly be stopped in her tracks at an altogether unexpected sight:  Alex rummaging in the freezer; no make-up on, hair in scooped up in a messy bun, glasses on the end of her nose, and all in nothing else but panties and a singlet.
She watched as the blonde finally freed the small tub of cookie dough ice cream from the clutches of the freezer, an adorably small victorious grin on her face.
Goddamn it she loved this woman.
After letting her earlier anxiousness and worry melt away at seeing the blonde more like her usual self, Casey decided to interrupt Alex’s happy little moment - although the way the blonde was practically dancing on the spot as she hummed happily and waved the spoon through the air really did bring a genuine smile to the redhead’s face,
“You better not just mine out all the cookie dough.”
Alex jumped a bit at the sudden noise but catching the teasing look and how Casey had her hip sassily popped in the door frame made her instantly calm once again. Turning away from the redhead she hopped up onto closest counter top, slowly pulling the spoon upside down from her mouth to ensure all traces of her ice cream were gone before waving it at Casey with an indifferent air,
“That was one time.”
Chuckling Casey pushed off and came to stand in between Alex's knees,
“I'd say that gives me probable cause to at least issue a warning.”
“Oh shush,”
Automatically Casey opened her mouth as Alex, with some apparent reluctance, scooped a (small) spoon for her. She savoured the cold sweetness for a moment or two, simply watching as Alex methodically ate through the ice cream – taking great pains to make sure the cookie dough bits were all eaten first. Typical.
Her legs swung lightly from her perch on the countertop and the movement drew Casey towards, them. She ran her hands up and over Alex’s long thighs – not with any agenda – but rather simply because she wanted to try give some comfort, some reassurance, by being there for the blonde.
When Alex responded by linking her ankles behind Casey’s waist and pulling her closer with a cheeky quirk of her brow and glint to her eye as she slowly eased the spoon out of her mouth once again whilst holding Casey’s gaze? The redhead couldn’t help but laugh. Her princess always was rather incorrigible.
But right now, she was going to be the better person, the better lover, partner or whatever you wanted to call it, and not instantly fall for Alex’s wily charm. Casey was more than aware that Alex had been particularly snowed under at work of late, but what had grown to concern her more was how she’d also seemed caught up in her head so much around Casey recently too: her mouth hovering open at times before she’d click it shut firmly. Oddly unspoken questions in her stormy blue eyes that Casey hadn’t had to experience in such a long time.  She knew they needed to reconnect, relax, and just spend some uninterrupted time together again because she wanted to press the blonde about what it was that was bothering her without it seeming like an ambush when she was already so worn out and vulnerable.
Just like earlier, in the hall, Casey knew the wrong word or interpretation could very well break her beloved. Running her hands further up the sides of Alex’s legs they instinctively came to rest around Alex’s waist. Content in the embrace Alex couldn’t suppress another little hum of happiness and she nodded so Casey would open her mouth and be fed some more of the ice cream which Alex actually seemed more than happy to share now she was getting cuddled.
Still the blonde watched her slightly warily, knowing that the way Casey was looking at her meant she was trying to figure out how to ask her something.
She’d gotten more than used to seeing that look when they’d first starting becoming friends – and then more – but it had been some time since she’d been so aware of the redhead being so unsure around her. It made her already heavy heart sink that little bit more, at least finally fortified with some sleep, ice cream, and being wrapped in Casey’s arms, Alex felt she might just about manage to take the bull by the horns as she always did. Steeling herself she placed the carton to the side for a moment and let her arms fall across herself protectively,
“Just say it Casey.”
The arched eyebrow and lifting of Casey chin in response to her tone stirred some warmth within Alex – Casey was always her equal for stubbornness and had long become immune to Alex’s self-protective brashness. With an only slightly deeper than normal breath Casey let some of the sudden tension bleed from her shoulders and she set about yet again gently pulling Alex’s arms from around her own waist as she spoke as calmly as she could,
“You need a break,”
Having prepared herself for recriminations at her attitude and absence the past few weeks – she knew she’d been both physically and emotionally distant from Casey – the softness and care with which she was being met unsettled Alex. Ducking away from the all-too-knowing eyes she glanced around and picked up the ice cream once more, glad she had something to occupy her hands with as she grumbled with no small amount of petulance,
“I’ve had more than enough time off.”
“Witsec doesn't count you know.”
The quick comeback, delivered with a small smirk and crinkling of eyes to soften the blow made Alex both huff in amusement and glare at Casey at the same time. Despite her apparent amusement Casey knew she had to tread carefully.
Reaching up she nudged Alex’s glasses further up her nose to their usual spot before turning her hand just so to gently caress down her cheek and jaw, finishing with playing with some of the stray hair that had escaped Alex’s hasty bun. The entire move had been instinctual, no words had been necessary and the redhead just hoped that Alex would be able to see she was coming from a point of care rather than criticism,
“You're no good to yourself if you burn out, you're gloriously human and I love you.”
Slightly bashful at such open adoration Alex tried to deflect the moment by booping the cold spoon against Casey’s nose, smiling adorably when there is a faintest smear of ice cream left over and Casey instinctively crossing her eyes in trying to see it.
“Come here you,”
Chuckling Alex used her thumb to swipe away the small trace of ice cream before leaning forward and kissing Casey there instead,
“I love you,” she says quietly, earnestly, as Casey dropped back down from her tip toes.
The sweetness of the moment made her smile, particularly in knowing that Alex was not upset nor instantly dismissing her concerns.
“Good. And because I love you I am going to tell you you need something more substantial than ice cream right now– shall I make you a grilled cheese to tide you over till breakfast?”
“Please, that would be really great thank you darling.”
“Of course baby, now –,” she shot Alex a cheeky smirk as she started getting things ready across the kitchen, “Am I making this your way or my way?”
“I would hope by now you would make it the correct way.”
Alex aimed for haughty, somehow pulling it off despite her soft appearance. The glares and arched eyebrows they give each other amplified and lasted until Casey broke first and laughed. Without needing further clarification she reached for Alex's beloved cheese slices and started assembling the other ingredients to make Alex her secretly favourite comfort food.
The way she quietly and confidently just puts it all together as Alex watched her from her perch, her feet still sometimes bumping the cabinet below, made the blonde fall for Casey all the more, ‘as if such a thing were possible’ she always admonished herself..  Casey could feel her scrutiny but let her just watch, knowing that Alex was obviously ruminating on something - or just checking out her ass. To be honest Casey was perfectly fine with either scenario.  She plated up the grilled cheese and passed it to Alex with a mock curtsy,
"Your food m'lady"  It makes Alex snort, which had been Casey's goal,
"You're such a dork." Wordlessly, although with a crooked smile which betrays her intention she hooks her legs behind Casey again so she's 'forced' to stand in between Alex's legs. Such a hardship.
"But you love me."
“But I love you."
A soft smile is shared until Alex leant forward to bestow a gentle but lingering kiss on her redhead. Her lips are slightly greasy from the cheese and Casey can feel crumbs from the toasted bread against her skin, but it still ranks amongst her favourite ever moments in the kitchen, which is saying something.
Even after finishing the kiss Alex refused to move her head further away, taking the moment of being free from Casey’s gaze to finally voice a concern that had been growing in her mind for the past several months,
“Maybe taking the job was a mistake. We live together and work in the same building but even then I hardly ever see you.”
“It comes in waves like that sometimes, and it's as much on me as it is you.”
Having finally broached the topic Alex felt comfortable enough now to lean back to look Casey in the eye. She spoke between bites as she finished her snack, grateful to have something else to physically focus on and keep her grounded,
“I know darling, but it just feels like this wave isn't going to break and I'm on that edge of going under.” A crust is waved dangerously close to Casey’s nose, “I always thought that this is what I wanted - I mean chief of trial division? It’s insane.”
Casey knew to just let Alex rant now she'd gotten on a roll,
"But I can never win you know? There's always another scandal, another murderer, ponzi scheme rip off and corrupt landlord, and all I'm doing is racing around and around. I feel like I'm not achieving anything. I haven't even stepped foot in a courtroom in over a year.”
She stalled, mouth still slightly open, hand paused in the air mid-gesture till she lets it drop onto her own thigh with a defeated thud. She shifted the now empty plate to the side and her expression was just so lost and frustrated and defeated that Casey knew she had to try cheer her up. They could mine down into things later, she just needed to see Alex smile once again,
“Do you know what it is you do want Al? Because I know for one you are a shoe-in for the Manhattan SVU bureau if you step down but are wanting to get back to trials.” She nudged at Alex's hip playfully as the blonde scoffed and rolled her eyes,
“Oh, is that so?”
“Yeah, like, I know who runs it, can put in some good words for you if you'd like. Think she always had a bit of a soft spot for you anyway.”
It pulled a light chuckle from the blonde at least.
Alex let her arms naturally twine around Casey's neck as the redhead continues to giggle lightly at her own joke, simply seeking physical comfort and receiving it as Casey pulled her tighter against her front for several moments,
“Seriously though, there is more out there than the DAs office Lex. If you want to go and explore for a bit they'll always welcome you back with open arms - maybe even give you an even bigger office with an even fancier chair upon your return...”
At her inference Alex pulled back to look at Casey in the eye, but all she is met with is an open honesty that makes her heart thud loudly, a low buzz sounding in her ears. The redhead's eyes crinkle at the side as she gives Alex her most endearing smile,
“I've been in love with you for years. That you've been thinking about running for DA since you started law school is your worst kept secret.”
Alex huffed petulantly and dropped her gaze at being so easily called out. She tried running her hands down Casey's arms to distract her whilst she thought of a usual denial and way of downplaying it, but the redhead caught them gently and entwined her own dextrous fingers with the blonde's, her thumb sweeping soothingly across the back of her hand to get Alex's attention,
“I meant it though sweetheart. If you want a career change for a bit and then come back as an EADA, Bureau or Division Chief or to make a run for the big chair, or never come back at all and completely stay away forever - I will be here being your biggest cheerleader and helping however I can.”
The earnestness makes Alex’s throat go scratchy, she opts for running her hand over her face as a way to escape for a moment and compose herself. But when she opened her eyes again Casey was still there, same endlessly adoring expression painted across her face.  Alex’s whole being ached with love for her,
“For a prosecutor you are such a softy Casey Novak.”
Alex kissed her slowly, purposefully, trying to pull in all the belief and love and support that Casey seemed to have infinite wells of just for her.  There was a moment when they parted, their eyes still nearly closed but just able to meet, their lips separated but still touching - everything felt so vast and overwhelming and yet not because they're tethered there together, held in each other’s arms, the smell of grilled cheese and the sweetness of cookie ice cream still in the air and the bustling silence of the world out side the glass windows receded to nothing.
It lasts for an eternity; it is less than a second.
Alex wants to ask her then, that question which had been burnt to the roof of her mouth for months, always being bitten back by her insecurity of it not being the right time, the right moment –
Marry me, marry me, marry me.
I can't do this without you.
You are everything.
Please say yes.
But just like every other time, she stalled, her mouth clicking shut.
The words stick to the back of her teeth, her brain tripping over their simplicity, their earthshattering importance.
The response to them had the power to destroy her and that power had her inherent anxiety spiking more than she’d ever felt before. And Casey, just like several weeks ago during the perfectly intimate, romantic and gloriously happy birthday dinner that Alex had arranged, with the determination of asking her then but getting too caught up in the mechanics and then Casey's beauty – her attentive, intuitive and wonderful girlfriend, seemed entirely oblivious to the hold she had; the weight of the moment seemed lost to her, and maybe it had been. Casey’s simple existence often ground Alex's whole world to a halt in the best of ways, she had no guarantee the redhead felt that same heated potential in their every interaction.
Instead, she stood there, wrapped in Alex’s arm and long legs, and smiled softly, almost sadly at Alex, holding her gaze as she ran her hands across the blonde’s cooling legs. The heat of her touch brought Alex back from her spiralling mind and she had to turn her head away to breathe and try recentre herself, to untangle her tongue from the unspoken mantra.
"Do you have any ideas what you might do if you did step away? It's a whole wide world out there..."
The way Casey was clearly trying to keep the serious topic light-hearted for now, as if Alex wasn't juggling with the idea of her professional life and lifelong goals changing like sand beneath her feet as her heart yearned for solidifying that one thing that now was all she wanted, needed, to feel complete. Her own brain berating her for getting scared once more...  Goddamn it why did Casey have to be so perfect.  There were tears building at her bottom eyelid as she tried to chuckle, having to sniff and swipe at her own face to compose herself once again,
"Honestly?"
"Always,"
"I'd love to travel again."
"You would?" Blonde locks brushed Casey's own shoulders as Alex nodded before leaning back, seeming more put together as she put voice to the ideas swirling through her mind,
"Yes. God, I want to drink good cheap French wine and walk-through fields of lavender in Provence even though you'll complain it'll make your eyes itch the entire time. I want to eat so much Italian pasta and pizza that you'll finally realise how disturbing it is to be sat opposite you during thanksgiving -,”
She ignored Casey's plaintive attempt to defend herself whilst also quietly laughing at the memory of Alex's horrified face during their first festive holiday with Casey's extended family – it was not her fault that her mum's turkey and stuffing was the best in Casey’s opinion and she had to eat her copious portion quickly otherwise her brothers would steal it from her plate like little trash panda thieves.
Alex's plate was always safe because she was a guest (and secretly because Casey's whole family was slightly intimidated and in awe of her). Casey, being the youngest and being the only girl, had never had such a luxury. Alex also laughed lightly at the memory they were both obviously thinking about, her hands tangling in a teasing tug and pull with Casey's as she hit her stride,
"- I want to go island hopping around Greece where you can get feta cheese on everything and we can never get the sand off of our feet or out our hair. Drinking ouzo out of the bottle as you eat olives even though you always claim to hate them."
Her exuberance was making Casey really smile now, loving seeing Alex so enthusiastic and animated once again,
“I want to go see the northern lights as we sip gluhwein and eat gingerbread and I can use you as my own personal space heater.”
The way Alex now licked her lips and canted forward just slightly had Casey’s pulse instantly racing,
“I want to go out clubbing in Berlin and Amsterdam, have too much tequila and dance with you and not care because no one else there will know us,"
She tugged Casey even closer to her, the redhead’s most recent chuckle getting caught in her throat as she became aware of how tightly their hips were pressed together, the heat there where they touched, and how Alex's face was so close to her own, the proximity getting even more charged with want and desire with each shallow breath the subtlest of movements as Alex's licked her lips as if she could taste the salt of Casey's skin from the sweat of dancing together already.
She swallowed heavily, and Alex seemed to lose herself as her gaze followed the movement of Casey's throat. She blinked slowly, almost languidly, and took time to extricate herself from whatever vivid imaginary scene she'd gotten lost in with a quiet sigh and Casey couldn't figure out if she was relieved or disappointed.
The blonde was almost sheepish as she leant back, her legs also relaxing their hold on Casey as she settled onto the counter top once more (why she couldn't have had this existential crisis on the comfortable couch or in bed was just another idiosyncrasy that she would be annoyed about were it not for Casey being there with her.)
"So," Casey's slightly husky voice broke the charged stillness but the effect was muted after she had to clear her throat again given how dry her mouth had somehow gotten, "after this grand European food tour," her down-playment made Alex smile, "what then?"
"I, I don't know -," Alex tried to hide the quiet vulnerability of her own words by reaching out to tuck some of Casey's hair back in place,
I don't care as long as you’re with me.
"-I know I'll want to do something. Something that helps people. Whether political or legal I'm not sure but that's where my strengths lie."
The response was so Alex that Casey wanted to kiss her again, repeatedly, but she knew they were making progress, finally, on this long overdue conversation,
"You could always go into private practice you know? You wouldn't even have to work for offers to land at your feet and you know it. "
The way Alex sighed and then rolled her eyes let Casey know she had at least thought about it already,
"I hate so many of the usual suspects though, I'd have to be a named partner or set up my own firm and that seems so ridiculous,
"Oh I don't know, Cabot Solicitors always sounded quite striking to me," Casey couldn’t help but run the flat of her hand over the top of Alex’s thigh, as if warming her cool skin would also warm the blonde to the idea.
But I'll need you with me.
Be brave Alexandra.
"Hmm, Cabot & Novak sounds better though, two names is always punchier don't you agree?"
She tried to play it off with her best teasing smirk, hoping that it would hide the jumping of her pulse, and that the redhead would pick up on her inference anyway and let Alex off the hook...
"Nah, it'd have to be Novak & Cabot or nothing, my papa always said if I ever got made a named partner to ensure Novak came first,"
Her smile was wide, playful like the gleam in her eyes, and now was the moment for Alex to push over that line, let Casey know what it was she was really trying to ask,
It could be still be one name. Cabot-Novak?
It'd be so easy for her to say, to draw Casey into that little world she was creating for them in her mind, in her heart,
Just say, just ask.
She opened her mouth.
"Is this the same Pappy who insists on me having a brandy before breakfast with him every morning when we visit? Still calls you his 'little Caseycat' and has a video of your kindergarten dance recital that he made me digitise for him? That papa? "
Bottled it once again.
Casey hated that Alex could make her blush so easily and she tried to hide it by blustering in mock offence,
"You promised you'd never speak of that,"
"I think you'll find I simply mimed zipping my mouth shut and throwing away the key. Not the same."
Safety in teasing. The familiar back and forth verbal sparring was like a comfort blanket,
"Privileged information shouldn't be used during a serious negotiation. Then again maybe it reinforces that you should go into politics instead."
The sassiness and smile meant the sting of the critique never landed and Alex found herself tilting her head back, once again laughing - both at Casey's defensive embarrassment and at herself. When she finally looked back at the redhead again, she allowed herself to feel that blush of happiness inside her.
Trust Casey to be so kind and unwaveringly supportive that Alex was finally able to feel like her professional life wasn’t going to drown her for the first time in months. She'd obviously been looking brighter as Casey started to tug at her arms,
"Come on, let's go to bed, there's plenty time for plotting career development after we've been able to rest this weekend."
Alex let herself finally slip off the counter, Casey automatically reaching out and steadying her as her legs wobbled having gone a little numb being on the cold surface for so long,
"Can we sleep in? I'd like an easy morning just wrapped up with you."
"Of course, but how about a walk around the park later on? Some fresh air and reminding you of what the world outside your office looks like might do you good?" Alex slipped under the covers, turned on her side, watching, as she waited for Casey to also settle so she could cuddle up onto her shoulder,
"That sounds nice,"
I'd go anywhere, so long as you’re with me.
Marry me, marry me, marry me.
Casey turned her face just enough to press a soft kiss to Alex’s temple, just like she always did,
“No more worrying about the future till Monday okay?”
My future is you, please.
“’kay,”
“And whilst I may not have that fancy wine, we could always try make some gingerbread tomorrow?”
The look of incredulity that Alex shot Casey as they settled under the covers, the blonde instantly seeking to rest her head on Casey’s chest, made Casey smirk knowingly,
“I’ll do the baking, even you can’t destroy the kitchen decorating gingerbread cookies sweetheart.”
So as she huffed – both at the never-ending but entirely accurate dig at her lack of cooking skills but also that her chosen pillow kept on moving as Casey failed to suppress her laughter at Alex’s expense – Alex thought that actually she felt better than she had in weeks, maybe months.
All because of the woman next to her – managing that dance of space and persistence so astutely that Alex finally knew that whilst there was a tidal wave of life choices coming her way faster than she necessarily wanted, there was a life raft within her reach, already under her cheek actually.
Just before sleep finally claimed her she resolved herself – as Alex Cabot only could – that tomorrow, well tomorrow she was going to ask Casey to marry her. That, and she would decorate those gingerbread cookies so good. They would be the best damn fucking cookies Casey had ever seen. Besides, what damage could she really do with icing sugar?

would you mind writing some calex?? anything is great because canon fucking sucks 😤 preferably something soft and cute because they deserve it lol thanks
calex + fluffy, you got it! i totally stole this idea from @commasplice27's wonderful fic "roommate for christmas," so read that <3.
“That’s entirely unfair,” Casey says as Alex emerges from her bedroom in pajamas and, amazingly, fluffy socks. The storm echoes her with a screeching thunderclap. Alex's worried look makes her want to hold her until it stops.
As one does when their colleague-friend insists the weather is too bad to leave.
"What is?" Alex says with a yawn, stretching her arms above her head. It exposes a sliver of pale skin, which is even more unfair if she's going to ask Casey to stay the night.
"Alex Cabot wears fluffy socks," she says, adoring, in lieu of what she's thinking.

Casey Novak x Alex Cabot Warnings: language. Hurt/comfort, fluff ending. Minor angst, ptsd/panic attack/anxiety attack. Requested: filling a drabble prompt but it got away from me..whoops
When the time came that Casey’s license had finally been reinstated, as nervous as she was, she was grateful, and excited to be returning back to the work she knew and loved. Alex was incredibly proud of the work she’d done over her suspension, and that she’d put in the effort to making it known that she had learnt from her mistakes and was ready to get back into the field.
To help celebrate, once the paperwork was in and everything was signed and ready to go, but before the official work started, Alex wanted to treat her girlfriend to a week out in the Hamptons. It wasn’t summer, or the most perfect time of year, but it wasn’t cold, and it would be a nice escape from the city for a few days before they were both back to being the lawyers they’d been before.
While it wasn’t warm enough to go into the water, they’d spent some time cozied up on the beach, getting as much sun and fresh air as they could. Casey curled herself around Alex, nuzzling into her neck as she kissed at her skin, murmuring how thankful she was to have a girlfriend so splendid. Alex could feel the years of stress and worry melting off the redhead with each wave that crashed against the shore. She knew how much Casey adored the ocean, it grounded her, brought her peace, made her feel impeccably relaxed. And right now, that was exactly what she needed.
The two of them lounged around the house, taking advantage of the cards and board games, reading old books together. Alex showed Casey some of her favourite spots around town, the best quaint coffee/tea shops. Casey managed to drag her off on a few walking trails (the closest things she could get to a hike around here) and even managed to convince her into some beach volleyball. (Which she was surprised Alex was so good at until the blonde admitted she’d played all through high school).
It was a nice break away because the Hamlet was relatively empty. If it had been summer, or even spring break it would’ve been overrun with tourists and rowdy teenagers throwing parties each night. Instead, Casey and Alex were able to curl up on the back porch and watch the sunset before the stars took over and Casey would start to point out constellations and nudge Alex excitedly to make a wish whenever she saw a shooting star. They enjoyed the serene calmness of the weekend before they would return back to the bustling city and the ever so over demanding jobs they’d nearly forgotten about.
Their second last night they stopped at a nice little bistro for dinner, walking home arm in arm simply surrounded by love. When they got back to the beach house, Casey started a little fire in the small pit on the back porch to keep them warm as they watched the stars. When she went to go grab a bottle of wine to share was when she realized they’d drank it the night before. She pecked Alex on the cheek quickly, saying she was going to run to the store on the corner and she’d be right back. Alex gave her a glittering smile, reminding her that she loved her before Casey quite literally jogged down the street.
Alex was happily watching the fire dance, casting a glow against her skin, eagerly awaiting her girlfriend’s return so that she could take advantage of all the extra snuggles. As much as this weekend had been a celebration for Casey, she’d really enjoyed the extra time away, and the extra private time with Casey. She was so happily content, off in dreamland, her mind drifting towards a life spent with Casey that she wasn’t even really aware of her surroundings.
A crack echoed through the night followed by a thundering bang causing Alex to jump in her skin. Her entire body froze, eyes darting through the night before she remembered just how open the porch was, forcing herself to race back into the house, slamming the door shut behind her. A second bang echoed outside of the house and she flinched, dropping out of view of any of the windows and into the hallway as she started to gasp for air, the ache in her shoulder started to burn as tears started to invade her eyes.
Somewhere buried within her panic she suddenly remembered that Casey was out there…on the street…alone and completely unprotected. She felt completely paralyzed, she wanted to get Casey, to at least try to make sure she was okay, to make sure she didn’t need help but she couldn’t move. She was already on the floor, but felt insanely dizzy, barely stumbling as she clutched at her chest, clawing at her throat as she tried to suck in any amount of breath. A third crack and echoing bang thundered over the house and she whimpered, managing to drag herself into the bathroom, knowing it was the only windowless room in the house.
*
Casey was back in the front door only a few minutes later. She popped the bottle of white in the fridge for later, scooping up the two wine glasses and taking the bottle of red out to the porch. She frowned at the shut door, trying to finagle it with half a hand before managing to swing it open.
“Sorry that took so long, looks like a bunch of other people came in for the night.” She stopped mid step, realizing Alex was nowhere to be seen on the porch, the fire only lightly flickering now. The blanket that had been wrapped around the blonde was strewn to the ground between the wicker couch and the door, Casey’s brow furrowed. She glanced around the beach front for a second, wondering if Alex had wandered down to the water and then she jumped lightly at a cracking sound followed by howls of laughter. She scoffed, rolling her eyes at the teenagers who’d been setting off illegal firecrackers, along with a few fireworks, half tempted to call the police on them.
Casey dropped what was in her hands on the kitchen counter,
“Lex?” She called out into the house, it wasn’t like Alex could have gone far.
Another bang went off outside, this one louder than the last due to the open door and Casey heard a tiny noise from down the hall. The bathroom door was shut, no light coming from under it, but it was unlocked. Casey knocked softly before she pushed it open.
“Alex?” She heard a gasp for air coming from behind the shut shower curtain, shaking breaths, almost like Alex was choking. “Baby!” She called softly, gently pushing the shower curtain open, the path of light from the hallway seeping into the room.
Alex was pressed against the back of the tub, knees up to her chest as she continued to grasp and claw at her throat, her skin was flushed, broken out in what almost looked like hives. She let out a whimper at the sight of a shadow standing tall over her and suddenly Casey realized what was going on. She dropped down to her knees on the outside of the tub, slowly reaching for the other woman.
“Lex…it’s just me…it’s Casey…you can trust me…”
“Can’t…can’t breathe…” Alex panted, her voice rough with panic.
“Okay. Okay. I’ll be right back baby, just hold on.”
Casey swiftly jogged down the hall to the bedroom, hands searching through the bedside table until she found the bottle of Ativan, hurrying back to the bathroom to pass Alex two, encouraging her to let them melt under her tongue. Normally she’d only want Alex to take one at a time, but she hadn’t seen her in this rough shape in a hell of a long time, and she knew the banging from the fireworks would probably continue.
She extended her hand out, leaving it palm up on the edge of the tub, waiting until Alex took a shaky breath, reaching out to grab it. Her fingers dug so tightly into Casey’s skin it almost hurt but in that moment she didn’t care if she was bruised for a week. Her thumb softly stroked over the back of her hand,
“It’s okay…” she murmured, “you’re okay…you don’t have to be scared anymore, okay?” Alex let out a shudder, her terror filled blue eyes looking up to Casey’s.
“I was scared for you…” she admitted, tears beginning to slip down her face. As much as Casey hated to see her cry, knowing that she could finally breathe enough to talk, and that the emotions were coming out as tears meant she was hopefully on the comedown. “All…all I could think…” Alex’s words were hoarse, broken up by little cries or deep heavy breaths as her lungs ached for air, “was…was that you were out there…alone…bleeding out on the…sidewalk.”
“Sweetheart…” Casey’s heart nearly broke, “it’s okay. I’m here, I’m okay, aren’t I?” Alex nodded stiffly. “I know why you’re scared. I know why you panicked. But I promise you…it’s just some punk ass kids setting off fireworks. That’s why it took me so long to get back…it seems everyone’s come out for the long weekend.”
“You think I’m stupid.” Alex muttered, dropping her face into her knees again, her body still shaking in after tremors.
“Not at all.” Casey squeezed at her hand, “baby…you’re here. You’re alive, and I’m not leaving your side.” She tugged slightly at Alex’s hand as she stood, “scoot forward.”
Alex did as she was asked, keeping her body curled tight around itself as Casey slipped into the porcelain behind her, wrapping her arms around the blonde. Another firework went off and Alex whimpered. Casey pulled her tight to her, pressing a kiss to her hair, “you’re safe now...you’re safe. We’re both safe.” She lightly kissed Alex’s shoulder, the side her scar was on, it was a reassuring gesture Casey had picked up not long into their relationship, a way to remind Alex that she was okay, and that she wasn’t going to judge her for being permanently scarred from her past, not physical or emotionally. She was going to love her no matter what.
Casey held her tightly, hands softly rubbing at her arms, not caring that her body was aching already from sitting in the empty tub. She knew the anxiety and panic clenching at Alex’s muscles and bones meant she would be a hell of a lot worse off after she’d calmed down anyways. Once Alex had slowly relaxed in her arms, shifting slightly so she was curled on her side, her head resting on Casey’s chest did Casey dig out her cell phone.
“What’re you doing?” Alex murmured.
“Calling the fucking sheriff.” She replied, “those punks need to stop. Those fireworks are probably illegal on top of everything.”
“You don’t need to.” It was almost instantly that another one went off and she flinched again. Casey kissed her forehead softly.
“It’s either that or I take my ADA badge and go down there myself to tell them to fuck off, so which would you prefer?”
“Please don’t leave.” She whimpered and Casey tightened her arm around her while she made the call.
Once the noises from outside had finally stopped, Alex turned back to Casey, giving her a soft nod that meant she was okay. They helped each other out of the tub, Casey guiding Alex to the bedroom, encouraging her to bundle under the blankets, and she’d be back in a moment.
She made sure the fire was out, locked both the doors, and scooped up her laptop and the wine once again. Back in the bedroom she handed Alex a glass, and tossed the laptop on the bed, prompting Alex to choose something mindless and funny to distract her for a few hours. Like in the tub, Casey straddled behind Alex, settling her in her arms, but this time her hands started to gently massage her body, trying to rid any of the tension and get rid of the stiffness in advance before she woke up in pain.
After only one glass of wine, Alex was basically asleep in her lap (which wasn’t surprising considering the meds, Casey hadn’t planned on letting her have more than one glass anyways). Alex nuzzled into her, humming happily which brought a smile from Casey.
“Thank you…” she whispered, “I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“Luckily you’ll never have to worry about that.” Casey murmured, pressing a kiss to her forehead as she shifted to spoon her. “I love you.”
“Love you too…”
It didn’t take much longer after that for Alex to be out. Casey sighed contently, knowing that she was safe, her love was safe, and they were together. It was all she ever wanted, all she ever needed.

Marked.
A/N: okay quick summary of this AU world, most people develop a soul mark at around age five. some don’t. the marks burn when you get them, and then again when the soul touch is completed. also, this takes place during the events of ‘ghost’. that’s all okay bye!
---------------------
When her mark first appeared, she was swinging upside down on a tree branch. It burned, and she came crashing down to the ground with a yelp.
Four stitches, six hours, and one black sling later, Casey Novak went home with a broken arm- and a soul mark.
She spent hours studying it over the years, trying to figure out how her mate could’ve touched her, trying to imagine what the moment would be like.
It was quite a large mark, a handprint wrapped around her upper arm, as if her soulmate had gripped it. It worried her slightly, the nagging fear that this mark had come from an act of violence was always in the back of her head. After all, she’d seen it before- her mother’s soul mark was on display for anyone to see- a handprint over her mouth.
But something in her tugged away at that fear, as if she knew, deep down, that whoever her soulmate was, he or she was good.
--------------------
When her mark first appeared, she was studying in her father’s parlor. The burning sensation she’d been warned about was quick, and she dropped her book in shock.
Her father had smiled, and praised her for growing up, and her mother had even shed a few tears. Hours later, she was still transfixed, staring at her soul mark in the mirror. After all, Alexandra Cabot was convinced she wasn’t going to have a soulmate.
Her mark was delicate, gentle, a thumbprint that traced down her cheek to her lips. She felt breathless every time she looked at it, knowing that her soulmate had touched her so gently made it almost impossible to wait for.
She couldn’t wait to meet him- or her- and finally feel whole. Finally not be lonely.
--------------------
25 years later.
“Liv, I know- yes, I understand that Miss Cabot’s life is still in danger…” Casey’s heels click on the tile as she storms down the hall to her office, not bothering to close the door as she dumps her files onto her desk, “I will do my best…hey, no, I get it. I’m not mad, just…I wish you would’ve trusted me.”
Suddenly, a hand wraps around Casey’s upper arm, and she freezes. Her mark is burning again, and she knows, without a doubt, that the person who has just grabbed her is the love of her life.
“I gotta go…” She hangs up the phone abruptly, still not daring to turn around, her breath caught in her throat.
“Casey Novak? This is your office, right?”
Breathe, Casey. This is the moment you’ve been waiting for.
She turns, her eyes filled with tears, and she almost cries out as her soulmate takes her hand off of her arm. Her breath is stolen from her, because oh my god, her soulmate is Alexandra Cabot.
Alex is her soulmate, and she is even more beautiful than Casey could ever have imagined.
Her thumb reaches out, and Alex’s eyes go wide, as if she knows what’s about to happen. She leans closer, and then Casey’s thumb meets her skin. It traces down her mark perfectly, and Alex gasps at the instant burning she feels- only this time, it doesn’t hurt. It feels right.
“Y- You’re my-“ Alex tries to speak, but her voice fails her, and Casey only smiles and nods, tears falling down her cheeks. Alex leans in again, this time not stopping until her lips connect with Casey’s in a raw and passionate kiss. Casey gasps, wrapping her arms around Alex’s neck, pulling her impossibly closer.
When they pull apart, they’re breathless, their lips tingling, and Casey sobs, letting Alex pull her close.
“Not that I’m not emotional, but I’m sensing there’s something I’m missing, hm? What’s wrong, sweetheart?” Alex’s voice is soft, softer than it’s ever been, as she tilts Casey’s chin up so she can see her eyes.
“I was so afraid that my soul mark was a violent one…m- my mother had a violent one, and so my dad was always so…cruel, and I saw how much she was hurting and I- I didn’t want to end up like her.”
Alex blinks, her own eyes filling with tears, and she shushes Casey gently, her head spinning. She knew she’d grown up privileged, but she didn’t know just how much until this very moment. Her parents were true soulmates, deeply and madly in love, and they adored Alex. Her heart breaks for her love, and she gathers her words, pressing a kiss to Casey’s head.
“I would never hurt you, darling. Never. I’ve been waiting for you my whole life, and now…now we can be together. Forever.” Alex croons, and Casey feels her heart swelling, the broken cracks in the surface repairing, and she knows that she was right.
Alex is good.
And Alex will love her. Forever.

Chapter 10
Summary: Alex and Casey are called to the precinct where they find Olivia trying to get a little girl to open up.
I feel like this one needs a bit of explaining. I basically mixed episodes 16 and 20 from season 6. Alex got shot and went into witsec (I’ll write that one eventually) she came back because they caught Connors and Casey was attacked because of her relationship to Alex. It will make sense when you read it. I split this chapter into two and will post the second later.
Warnings: usual SVU things
Chapter 10/?
Tumblr media
Olivia sat in the dark hospital room, Casey was sleeping, the pain meds having taken her out after Olivia spoke with her. Olivia tried to remain calm and calm Casey when she hadn’t remembered what had happened, knowing it was normal but it still left her deeply unsettled. The last few weeks, scratch that the last few months had been a complete shit show. All of it starting the night Alex died; well, she wasn’t dead, but only Olivia and Elliot knew that. They had promised Alex and the Marshalls they wouldn’t tell anyone, not even Casey, much to the detective's surprise as the marshals had insisted that it was to keep Casey and Niki safe. Alex had asked them, practically begged them, to look over her family, to take care of Casey, to not let her fall apart, and not let anything happen to her or to Niki. Of course, they had promised, and they had kept said promise, watching over them after Alex was gone.
Now Olivia looked at the beaten redhead in front of her and couldn't help but feel like she had broken that promise. She was so deep in thought she didn't notice the door opening and closing until a gasp followed by a broken sob broke the silence. Olivia turned her head so fast she almost got whiplash.
“Alex?” she whispered, unable to contain the shocked tone at seeing the blonde again.
Alex walked towards the bed, her eyes never leaving Casey. She reached out carefully, running the back of her hand over Casey's bruised cheek. Olivia watched as Alex's eyes flooded with tears until a few fell out. A minute must have passed, Olivia's mind still trying to comprehend how Alex was in front of her until Alex quite literally stood in front of her, anger running through her. “How could you let this happen?” she demanded, her voice breaking with emotion. “You promised me you were going to take care of her,” she took a deep breath, and Olivia could tell she was trying to compose herself.
Olivia ignored the questions and instead fired one of her own. “How are you here?”
Alex looked towards the door that was now blocked by what Olivia assumed were a couple of marshals. “One of the marshals let it slip that an ADA had been attacked, so Hammond told me what happened, and after that, he sure as hell wasn’t going to stop me from coming. Now answer me, what happened?” She was using the voice she reserved for when she dealt with criminals, and if Olivia didn't already understand why everyone was so intimidated by her, she sure as hell did now.
Olivia sighed, knowing there was really no beating around the bush now. “We’ve been dealing with four murders, the bullets matched your open homicide. Donnelly pulled Casey out of it the moment we figured out that whoever killed them also tried to kill you. We weren’t allowed to tell her, but you know how she is, she went digging and found out.” The squad had no idea how Casey had figured it out, but a day after they told her she couldn't keep on with the case, she had stormed into the precinct pissed at all of them for not telling her that they were looking into Alex’s murder.
Olivia sighed and continued when she saw Alex was waiting for her to go on. “Alex, she's been in really rough shape, and I guess she just lost it. She went into court the day of arraignment and started screaming at Connors until we got her out of the room. Thankfully, it was Judge Preston, and she let it slide. We tried to calm her down, but she screamed at us to leave her alone and went home after.”
Alex rubbed her hand over her face a couple of times. She knew Casey was going to fall apart; hell, if the roles were reversed, she would’ve lost her mind. “So how did she end up here?”
Olivia knew it was all still an ongoing investigation and they were still trying to piece everything together, but she also knew that she wasn’t going to be able to keep much from Alex. “We knew she had made herself a target the moment she stormed into that courtroom and screamed about him killing her wife. When the prosecution decided to charge Connors with your murder to be able to hold him, they must have figured that they could go after her to try to scare the DA’s office off the charges. I stayed with her because she insisted she needed to look into Connors while Elliot went to get Niki. I stepped out to get us coffee for five minutes, Alex, and when I came back, she was-”
Alex interrupted her, trying her hardest to not raise her voice and wake Casey up. “How could you leave her alone knowing she had a target on her back, Olivia?” She was fuming and pacing the room; it would do her no good to startle Casey, all things considered.
“Alex, we were in the DA’s office, in her office. There was no safer place for her to be,” Olivia reached out, trying to comfort her, but was quickly pushed back by the blonde.
Alex shook her head, her anger palpable. “Well, that clearly isn’t fucking true, look at her!” a sob bubbled up in her chest and broke free before she could stop it, Olivia taking the chance to try again, this time successfully wrapping Alex in a hug.
"Hey, shh," Olivia murmured, tightening her hold on Alex knowing the pressure would help ground her. "She's going to be okay."
Olivia kept holding her tightly, slowly rocking them back and forth. She couldn’t even begin to imagine what was going through Alex’s head. She felt her let out a shaky breath against her shoulder before she spoke again. “What did the doctors say?”
Olivia pulled back slightly, still holding Alex close to try to keep her calm. “She’s got a concussion, bruising, and a couple of broken ribs. They were worried about internal bleeding, but they cleared that. She doesn't remember the attack yet.”
“He didn’t…did he?” Alex asked her, and Olivia didn’t even need her to specify because she’s been working this job long enough to know what Alex meant.
She gave Alex another squeeze. “No, honey, I talked to the nurses, and it was cleared,” she reassured her, giving her a small kiss on the side of her head.
Olivia could see the relief flood Alex’s features. “Thank God,” another wave of sobs made their way through the silence in the room, and Olivia would be lying if she said it didn’t freak her out slightly to see Alex so distraught. She doesn’t think she’s ever seen her cry that much, and it was breaking her heart.
“Liv, how am I supposed to explain this? She thinks I’m dead; my daughter thinks I’m dead,” this subject was one that had kept Alex awake for so many nights in the past months. Her anxiety at an all-time high over how her wife and child would react to finding out she was alive. She knew that she was in an impossible situation and that Casey might even hate her for this. This definitely wasn’t how she had wanted to come back, adding to the pain and trauma, both physical and psychological, that her wife was dealing with by having her come back to life wasn’t ideal, but Alex couldn’t stay away. She just hoped Casey would understand.
“There was nothing you could do, Alex, you had to protect them,” Olivia rubbed her back, trying to keep Alex from getting more distressed.
Alex let out a humorless laugh. “Yeah, look at how well that turned out,” she pulled back from Olivia’s arms, wiping her hands below her eyes to get rid of the last of her tears, taking a deep breath, and schooling her features. “I want him charged with my attempted murder and her assault.”
Olivia’s brow furrowed with concern at the implication of Alex’s words. “Honey, that would mean you’d have to leave witness protection,” she tried to reason, not sure it was the best idea considering what was happening. “We already have him for the four murders.”
Alex shook her head and started to pace the room once more. “I don’t care, if I can help get him convicted, I may have a shot at staying. Besides, if they find out I’m alive, it will only fuel the defense to push for perjury charges.”
“Alright, I’ll talk to Abbie, see what she thinks,” Olivia nodded, already trying to figure out how she was going to tell Abbie that Alex was alive and that they had perjured themselves when they arrested Connors.
The mention of Abbie Carmichael seemed to catch Alex off guard; they hadn’t seen each other for so long she wasn’t even sure Abbie was still in New York. “Carmichael is back?”
A faint smile tugged at Olivia’s face at Alex’s disbelief. “You really think Donnelly was going to let a random ADA handle this? You two are like family to her; she basically speed-dialed Abbie when Casey was taken off the case.”
Alex paced across the room for a little while, seemingly calmer now that she knew Abbie was the one handling the case. She finally pulled up a chair and sat next to Casey, very gently holding her hand, careful not to disturb the cables and wires that ran around her.
“How has she been doing? How’s Niki?” Alex's voice was soft, mindful that she was now closer to Casey, her eyes never leaving her as she asked Olivia for updates on her girls.
Olivia took a moment to gather her thoughts before responding, searching for a way she could tell Alex things that she was sure were only going to break her further. “Niki has been quiet. I don’t think she fully understood what was happening. She has lashed out at Casey a few times, but after, she just seems to go back into herself. After the funeral, she kept asking Casey when you were coming back. We’ve been taking turns taking care of her, making sure she’s with one of us whenever Casey is working.”
A heavy silence hung in the air as Alex absorbed the news, her expression a mixture of sadness and guilt. She knew the toll her death was going to take, and yet, she couldn't shake the feeling of helplessness that was trying to consume her, the nagging thought that she had failed them in some irreparable way.
“Casey, she's not doing great.” Her voice was soft, as if it was aware of how easily it could cut through Alex. “I'm going to be brutally honest with you; if it wasn’t for Niki, I don't think she would be here. Donnelly gave her a month's leave, and she was just going through the motions for Niki. She was almost catatonic during that time, and now she just throws herself into cases until she’s almost drowning in them.”
The weight of Alex's guilt seemed to multiply the more Olivia spoke as she grappled with the enormity of the situation and how much her wife had suffered because of her. “This is a whole fucking mess; what am I supposed to do?” she exclaimed, the frustration at being in this situation clear in her voice.
Olivia reached out, her hand coming to rest on Alex's shoulder in a gesture of comfort. “You tell her the truth, tell her it was the only way to keep them safe and that you didn’t have a choice. She’ll understand.”
Alex's frustration boiled over, her anger directed inward as she berated herself for the decisions that had led them to this point. "I hate Hammond, I hate Connors, fuck, I hate myself for not listening and dropping the case," she confessed, thinking about how Casey had supported her as she kept working the case but practically begged her the night they blew up the car and the agent with it to let someone else handle it. She was too stubborn and too determined to listen, and that set all of this in motion.
“You were just doing your job, Alex,” Olivia tried to reassure her, seemingly aware of how much Alex was berating herself in that moment.
“Yeah, and it cost me nearly eight months of my life with my wife and our daughter,” Alex whispered, defeated by the weight of regret that had clung to her since the night she had to leave.
Olivia didn’t have an answer for that; she could only imagine how hard all of this was for them. When Casey shifted a little in her sleep, she got Alex’s attention again, knowing the redhead was going to wake up soon. “Do you want me to stay or do you want to be alone with her?”
Alex shook her head and rubbed her thumb over Casey’s hand. “Please stay; I don’t know how she’s going to react to seeing her wife back from the dead.”
Olivia pulled up another chair and settled in beside Alex, wrapping one of her arms around Alex and letting her lean her head against her shoulder. “Okay, honey, I’ll stay.”

*not my gif*
Alexandra Cabot was top of her class. Many selfish and jealous people thought that she was the best just because she was a known person because of her last name. But the truth was that Alex was dedicated to school, she had always been, since she can remember; she spent her free days with books, she loved them. It wasn’t entirely a lie that her family had influenced her in getting into law school, but she was happy with her decision, and she was going to do anything to get to her goals, meaning, she wouldn’t let anything distract her from getting what she wanted. She was probably the only person in her class that didn’t go to parties or gatherings with her classmates, she didn’t go to the games the school held, she just focused on her studies. Did she regret it? Maybe. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to have a social life, she had her friend, but she knew that university was not about parties.
For two whole years it stayed that way, nothing had changed her mind, and she was still very much focused on her studies; that was until her eyes landed on a redhead. One of her classes had gotten canceled, meaning she had 2 hrs free to do whatever she wanted; so she decided to finish homework she had. She had thought about going to the library, but she decided she’d go for a coffee near her building, and she’d spend the two hours there. This was a coffee shop that she normally visited every now and then when she wanted to be at the library, the coffee, and the food in there was really good, and the environment was actually calm, and it helped her concentrate on the things she had to do. But as she sat down in her usual spot and looked around, she noticed a redhead taking an order. She had never seen her here, clearly, because she’d remember that beautiful smile. For a moment she was too stunned by how beautiful she was, she had stared way too longer that she didn’t notice her friend sitting right in front of her.
“Alex?”
Alex snapped out of her thoughts and stared at her friend. “H-Hi! Sorry. I uh…when did you get here?”
Erin chuckled. “I’ve been here for like 3 minutes. How long have you been staring at the redhead?” She grinned as she got her notebook and book out of her bag.
“I- what do you mean?” Alex chuckled nervously. “I was not staring at anyone, just…a bit lost. Thinking what I’m ordering.”
“Uhuh…as if you never order the same, Cabot.” Erin chuckled. “But okay, I’ll believe you. What are you ordering?” She raised her brow.
Alex sighed as she grinned. “Black coffee and a chocolate croissant.”
Erin laughed. “See? Why is it wrong that I caught you staring at the redhead? She’s really pretty.”
Alex shrugged. “I have never seen her here before.”
“She hasn’t been here for long. I saw her the day I came to buy us coffee. I think I heard she’s a law student too.”
Alex raised her brow. “Law student?” She nodded. “I can actually see that.” She said almost in a whisper as she got her things out.
“Alexandra Cabot is getting interested in someone after two years.” Erin smirked.
Alex looked up and shook her head rapidly. “I- Erin no! I just- I was-“
“Hi ladies! My name is Casey, can I offer you anything to drink or eat?” Casey smiled at both of them and then her eyes landed on Alex’s.
Alex cleared her throat as she looked up at Casey, trying to talk but all of a sudden, she forgot how to do that. Erin wanted to laugh but cleared her throat too, getting Casey’s attention. “I’ll get an iced latte with sugar please. And to eat, I’ll just get a muffin.” She then looked at Alex. “Alex? What are you ordering?”
“I- uh…black coffee and a croissant, please.” Alex offered a shy smile.
Casey grinned as she nodded. “Comin’ right up.” She then walked away, but not before she turned to look at Alex again, offering a smile.
Erin laughed and threw her head back. “Oh my, I never thought I’d live to see the day of seeing Alexandra Cabot getting nervous for someone! So.” She looked back at Alex. “Is your type redheads?”
“Jesus, Erin, drop it.” Alex sighed as she covered her face, blushing. “Let’s just-“ she sighed as she looked back at Erin. “Let’s get this done, we have class, and we need to hurry.”
“Avoiding. It is true that you always learn something new from people.” Erin chuckled teasingly as she opened her book.
Alex bit her lip as she looked at Erin for a moment, and then she turned her head to look at Casey. She had come out to Erin just a year ago, admitting that she had always been attracted to girls, but she never said a thing because she didn’t think it was relevant, but when Erin asked if she wanted to go on a double date with some guys, Alex thought it would be good to let Erin know that she was not into guys. She was relieved when Erin accepted her and never judged her, it was the other way around, actually, she was pretty much trying to get a date for Alex in every possible chance, but Alex refused reminding her that she only cared about school and not some dumb romance in university. But now…she had to admit that maybe a little crush on someone wouldn’t hurt. She didn’t actually have a type, she didn’t know if she did. But until now, all she knew, is that Casey could be her type.
********************
Alex sighed as she tried to keep her mind concentrated in the book she had in front of her, she was studying for finals and Erin was supposed to meet her at the coffee shop so they could study together, but at the end plans had changed and now Alex sat at her same spot, trying to focus on her book and hoping to not get distracted with the redhead. She didn’t even know if she worked that day, but the last time she had been going to the coffee shop, Casey was right there, and even if there was someone else taking orders, Casey was always the one that took their order. What Alex had been trying to avoid had happened; she had accepted to herself that she had a crush on Casey. She had been trying to avoid it, she had been trying to not think about her, but it was impossible after learning that she was also a law student, she was in her first year, so it’s not like they’d ever have same classes, but she had caught her in the hallways every now and then.
How did she know about this? Because of course Erin was encouraging her crush. She teased her every possible chance she had. She had also found out that Casey was in the softball team of the university, and it honestly made sense with how beautiful her body was. Alex tried hard to not think about Casey and about the new information that Erin had provided her, but in the last 4 months, it was kind of impossible not to think about Casey. That smile, those eyes, that voice. Alex was now lost, and she knew it. There was no turning back from this, unless of course, she tried to get over it or she found out that Casey had a boyfriend or something, which could break her heart…break her heart was probably too much. But she would feel sad? She was confused to say the least. It was just a stupid crush. That was it. A crush.
“Alex!”
Alex looked up from her book and her heart stopped for a moment as she stared at Casey, who was smiling at her. “Casey…hi.”
“You remember my name!” Casey chuckled softly.
How could I not remember it? “Yes, I do.” Alex chuckled. “You’re not working today?”
“Oh, I worked earlier. But I have finals, so they let me leave early. I actually just finished my shift and was going to stay around to study.” Casey smiled as she looked at Alex’s book. “I take it that you’re also studying.”
Alex looked down at her book and smiled. “Yes…I uh…I am.” She looked back at Casey. “I’m just reading again, I already studied.” She chuckled nervously.
“Well, I’ve heard that you’re top of your class, so I believe you’re more than ready for any exam.” Casey grinned.
“You’ve…heard about me.” Alex frowned as she smiled.
“A little, yes.” Casey smiled. “I’m sorry I don’t wanna take your time. I- oh! I brought you this.” Casey placed a coffee and a small bag beside it. “Some encouragement to study.” She grinned.
Alex looked at the coffee and the small bag and smiled. “Is that…”
“Black coffee and a chocolate croissant. You always order the same.” Casey smiled. “I’ll see you around?”
Alex nodded. “Hey…do you…maybe want some help with studying? You can sit with me if you want to.”
Casey smiled. “Really?”
Alex nodded again. “Sure.”
“I’d actually appreciate that.” Casey smiled as she placed her backpack on the floor and sat down in front of Alex.
Alex knew that this wouldn’t really help her crush, but at this point, who really cared about it? She was going down, bad, and she knew it. Casey had heard about her, she knew her name, she had even learned her order. And the funny thing was that the very first time she met Casey, she had brought her a plain croissant because Alex had not mentioned she wanted a chocolate one, but suddenly Casey started bringing her the right order, and now she learned it, and even if it seemed nothing, it was everything to Alex. But then her mind started playing tricks on her. Why would someone like Casey want to be with Alex? Even hang out with her? It was surprising enough that Erin was her friend, they were totally different but similar at the same time, but they were able to build a close friendship. But Casey, she was younger by two years, but why would she find any interest in Alex? She was probably just being friendly, maybe she just wanted to know people who were older to have some sort of help in school, but the reality was that Alex didn’t care. The thought of helping Casey and being able to spend time with her made her feel good. This was so wrong, but she didn’t care.
********************
“Where are we going?” Alex asked as she sighed, crossing her arms as she waited for Erin.
Erin smiled as she walked to Alex, closing her closet. “We’re going to a softball game.”
Alex frowned. “We never go to those, Erin.”
“Now we are.” Erin grinned as she handed Alex a shirt with the softball team logo.
Alex stared at it and then realized what Erin was doing. “Erin.” She looked up at her. “No.
“Alex. Yes.” Erin smirked as she threw Alex the shirt. “C’mon, we’re gonna be late.”
“You made me come all the way here so you can embarrass me and take me to a game. Casey’s game.” Alex grabbed the shirt from her shoulder, looking down at it.
“It’s just a game! You get to see Casey play. You’re gonna tell me you don’t wanna see her.” Erin smirked as she turned to grab the rest of her stuff.
Alex sighed as she took off her hoodie and put the shirt on. “You’re gonna pay for this.”
Erin laughed. “You’re gonna tell me you haven’t been spending more time at the coffee shop.” She turned to look at Alex. “Oh, wait. With Casey, actually.”
Alex frowned. “I…haven’t.”
“Oh, yes you have. I saw you two days in a row, sitting with her.”
“I was helping her study!”
“So you introduced yourself?” Erin raised her brows.
Alex cleared her throat as she looked down at her hoodie. “She heard about me and knew my name…” she whispered softly as she looked up at Erin.
Erin smirked. “Oh, someone’s got a crush on you.”
Alex rolled her eyes. “Can’t we just go? Please.”
Erin chuckled. “Fine, let’s go.”
As they got to the field, Erin tried to get them to good stands so they could get a perfect look of the game. Erin went crazy buying food and snacks, but Alex was truly nervous that she’d be seeing Casey playing. In one of their meetings, Casey had talked about her playing softball and the training she had, which meant that she barely had any time to do anything at all, between school, work and practice, her days were pretty busy. So the fact that she had stayed hours with Alex meant everything to her, even if they had been mostly studying the whole time. Alex looked around as she sat down, her eyes suddenly landing on the redhead who was stretching. Her breath hitched as she noticed the tight uniform and how it hugged her body perfectly; she wanted to give herself a slap as she was focusing on her body, which was definitely not right. Her eyes went back to Casey’s face, and to her luck, Casey was already staring at her, a smile on her face as she waved. Alex blushed slightly as she waved back, smiling back at her.
Eventually, the game finally started, everyone around them screaming and clapping for the team. She didn’t even know what was supposed to happen in the game, but she was willing to stay focused for Casey. Erin tried to instruct her what was happening, but even if she tried to listen to Erin, she really didn’t understand a thing. Finally, Casey put on her helmet and grabbed her bat, earning loud screams as she walked to her base. Alex’s eyes lit up as she looked at Casey, smiling as she positioned herself; she had seen some baseball games with her father before, and so far, she knew that Casey’s team was winning, and if she hit a…homerun? Something. They’d win the whole game. Or that’s what her mind made up. She couldn’t help but scream and stand up when Casey started running fast around all the bases, the whole crowd going insane screaming Casey’s name. Erin and Alex jumped and screamed together as Casey’s team surrounded to celebrate the win, everyone cheering for them and throwing food and water. Alex’s eyes focused on Casey for a moment, and her smile slowly faded as she noticed a girl hugging Casey and placing her hand on Casey’s cheek, leaning in to kiss her cheek. Alex cleared her throat and looked at Erin, offering a small smile as her heart sank.
Alex had asked Erin if they could already leave, not wanting to stay there anymore, even if it meant that they’d lose the celebration and the team. Erin had drunk a lot of soda and water, so Alex was waiting for her outside the restrooms, wrapping her hoodie around her waist and crossing her arms as she looked around. A bunch of people kept celebrating and screaming, running around, and jumping. Alex never understood sports, and she couldn’t believe that Erin had convinced her to come just to have her heart hurt at the sight of another girl kissing Casey. She sighed softly, rubbing her face, and groaning softly.
“Alex!”
Alex uncovered her face and her heart stopped for a second as she saw Casey running to her. “Hey.”
Casey smiled widely as she stood in front of Alex. “Hi. I’m so glad I caught you. I wanted to say hi since I saw you at the start of the game.”
Alex cleared her throat. “Oh. Uh. Well hi.” She smiled. “Congratulations, by the way. Good game.”
Casey chuckled as she looked at the ground for a moment. “Thanks.” She looked back at Alex. “I didn’t think Alex Cabot was a sports girl.”
Alex huffed a laugh. “I am not.” She shook her head. “But uh, my friend Erin, she dragged me here. I’m waiting for her so we can go.”
Casey nodded. “Oh, got it.” She smiled. “Hey, uh. So…later we’re throwing a small celebration party, since this was the last game of the season. I was wondering…if you wanted to come.”
Alex stared at Casey for a moment, thinking that maybe she had heard wrong. “Uh…a party?”
“Yes.” Casey smiled. “I mean I dont normally go to these parties, but you know, we won, thought it could be fun for once. I don’t really have to work tomorrow so. And I was actually going to call you, you saved me a phone call.”
Alex smiled softly. “So…even if I didn’t come…you were going to invite me?”
Casey shrugged. “Why not?” She grinned.
Alex nodded. “I uh…well, I don’t normally go to any parties. I don’t…really get invited but uh-“
“We’re definitely going!” Erin said as she walked out of the restrooms, smiling at Alex and then at Casey. “That’s if I’m invited too? If not, I’ll drop of Alex.” She grinned.
“Of course! I mean, the team is inviting a lot of people so.” Casey chuckled. “So, yes?”
Alex looked back at Erin and then at Casey, smiling as she nodded. “Sure. Where?”
Casey’s smile widened. “Uh…Tina’s house. Back Bay area, there’s going to be a big sign outside the building, so you won’t miss it. I can call you later and tell you the right address.”
“Sounds good.” Alex smiled.
Casey nodded. “Alright, I’ll see you then. Bye Erin.” She smiled before she walked away.
Erin’s mouth opened in surprise as she turned to look at Alex. “Alexandra Cabot going to her very first university party! Oh my! We gotta find you a perfect dress!”
Alex rolled her eyes as she sighed, turning to look at Erin. “Don’t get too excited, Er. I think I saw a girl kissing Casey’s cheek.” She started to walk, trying to hide the excitement she felt.
Erin frowned. “Oh, c’mon, Alex.” She followed her. “That doesn’t mean anything! I kiss you on the cheek too, doesn’t mean we’re dating.”
“I know but…” Alex scoffed. “Why would Casey Novak be interested in someone like me? Like seriously. I’m older than her, I’m…literally a nerd.”
Erin raised her brow. “You do realize that it’s obvious that younger people are fascinated by people of our ages. Plus, it’s two years. And!” She jumped in front of Alex to stop her. “You’re not the only nerd. Casey is top of her class.” She grinned.
Alex frowned. “What?”
“Uhuh. Laura was telling me the other day. We go to the same hair salon, and she was talking about how Casey was the smartass in their class. So her asking you to help her study? Yeah, that was definitely just to spend time with you, Cabot.” Erin smirked.
Alex shook her head as she tried to hide her smile. “Okay…even if she wanted that. I still don’t think she’d be interested in me.” She shrugged. “So…this. The party? It’s just a party and that’s it.”
Erin rolled her eyes. “If you say so. But. We’re still gonna dress you nicely. Comfortable. But nicely. If Novak doesn’t lay eyes on you tonight, we’re getting you someone else. Maybe we can get another redhead.” She smirked.
“Fine.” Alex grinned as she rolled her eyes.
********************
“You’re not gonna leave me alone, are you?” Alex asked as they walked to the house, looking at Erin.
Erin looked back at Alex and smiled. “I believe you’ll leave me at some point. But no, and if you want to go, we can go. Promise I won’t drink much.” She chuckled.
Alex sighed as she nodded. They walked inside the house and Alex was pretty surprised to find a big crowd, the music was a bit loud and there was barely any lights. Erin took her hand so they wouldn’t get lost in the crowd, trying to get to the middle of the house or somewhere where they could actually move and hear each other. They finally got to what seemed to be the living room, people were dancing and drinking, some were playing with the cups, some were making out. So this is what a university party was like, Alex was really not missing anything, this was just a mess and they seemed horny teenagers. In every single part, there were about 2 or 3 couples just making out. She thought that she only saw this in movies but no, it was pretty much real, and she was sure more people were upstairs, and she did not want to figure out what they were doing up there.
As she looked around the room, she saw Casey’s team gathered around in a corner, laughing and with drinks in their hands, and then there was Casey right in the middle. She smiled softly but then her smile fainted again as she saw the girl from earlier right beside Casey, her arm wrapped around her shoulder. Alex knew she had no point in getting jealous, but she was. But then Casey’s eyes landed on her, and Alex swore her smile widened as she saw Alex; she didn’t know if she had imagined it or not, but Casey’s eyes traveled down her body, and she nibbled on her lip as she started walking to Alex; she was thankful that she had let Erin dress her, Alex normally liked wearing nice clothes, but the skirt and the blouse along with the long boots that Erin had picked for her, were showing a little too much, but if that was getting Casey’s attention, then she didn’t mind one bit.
Her breath hitched as Casey got closer to her, her eyes also traveling down Casey’s body; Erin had joked before about Alex being into girls that didn’t exactly dressed girly, she had now seen Casey wearing her softball uniform, she had seen her wearing a skirt with a blazer for a presentation, her work uniform, and casual Casey. Party Casey looked like those girls from movies who were the ones that ruled over people, with a leather jacket, jeans and boots, and Alex couldn’t skip the shirt she was wearing, that showed Casey’s cleavage.
“I thought I’d have to call you to make sure you were coming.” Casey grinned as she stood in front of Alex. “You look nice.” She whispered softly but enough for Alex to hear her.
Alex chuckled nervously as she blushed. “You look nice too.”
Erin cleared her throat as she smiled at both women. “I’ll see myself out for a bit.” She grinned as she walked away, going to Casey’s friends.
Casey chuckled. “Can I offer you a drink?”
“I uh…I actually don’t drink that much.” Alex bit her lip as she looked at Casey.
“Oh, such a good girl, Cabot.” She grinned. “They have nonalcoholic drinks too. We can go to the kitchen to check.” Before Alex could answer, she grabbed her hand and pulled her to the kitchen, walking through the crowd.
Alex tried to stay as calm as possible, and then thought that a drink wouldn’t hurt, it could actually help her calm her nerves. Once they got to the kitchen, she stood close to Casey and smiled. “Actually, a drink wouldn’t hurt.”
Casey turned to look at Alex and smiled. “I can mix some vodka with soda or juice so it’s not too strong.”
“Whatever you drinking.” Alex grinned.
Casey couldn’t help but stare into her eyes, grinning softly. “You look beautiful with or without glasses, you know?”
Alex’s breath hitched again as she stared into green eyes. “Your eyes are beautiful.” She smiled.
Casey bit her lip as she smiled. “Thanks.” She then cleared her throat as she grabbed the drinks she was going to mix and two cups.
Alex looked around trying not to stare too much at Casey, and noticed Erin staring at her, a smirk on her face. She shook her head, a quiet laugh leaving her lips. She returned her stare to Casey once she saw her raising the cup and handing it to her. “Thank you.”
“Of course.” Casey smiled as she grabbed her own drink and took a sip of it. “So, is this really your first party?” She leaned over the counter.
“You said it, I’m a good girl.” Alex smirked as she huffed a chuckle. “I uh…I focus a lot on school. I rather keep myself busy with studying or with books.” She shrugged. “I don’t know…I was just never an extrovert.”
Casey nodded. “I get that. I mean…these parties can get pretty crazy.” She chuckled. “I normally don’t come to these, and if I do, I literally leave early.”
Alex tilted her head. “I thought you were one of those athletic girls that liked to party and be a heartbreaker.” She grinned. “But I heard you’re also sort of a nerd.”
Casey blushed slightly as she looked at Alex. “I uh…I mean…yes, I just.” She huffed a chuckle. “Who told you?”
“Oh, a little bird.” Alex smirked. “So, you asking me for help…?” She raised her brow.
Casey shrugged. “Maybe I just…wanted to have an excuse to talk to you.” She grinned as she tilted her head, green eyes never leaving blue ones.
Alex knew she was probably blushing, but she couldn’t look away from Casey, she could stare at her for as long as she possibly could. “Nice excuse.” She simply said.
They stayed in the kitchen for a little longer than they expected, finding that it was the most quiet place in the whole house, and they just wanted to talk. They were talking about everything but nothing specific at the same time, just making each other smile and laugh. Even if Alex hated the fact that there were a lot of people surrounding them, she loved that she was with Casey, and that she was actually willing to stay with her. But then there was a moment where they literally dragged Casey away from Alex, and Casey made sure to tell her that she’d be back with her as soon as possible. Alex just watched her being dragged away and back into the living room, leaving her a bit sad but also understood that this was a party for them after all. Her eyes finally landed on Erin who was already walking to her, a smirk plastered on her face.
“I see you’re having a good conversation with Novak. Guess we won’t have to find you anyone else.” Erin smirked.
Alex rolled her eyes playfully. “We’re just talking, Er. Nothing more.”
“You’re seriously still in denial that she’s interested in you.” Erin chuckled. “You’re literally perfect, Alex. You’re top of your class, you’re beautiful, you’re nice. Damn, you’re a good girl, anyone would want to have you.”
Alex chuckled as she took a sip of her drink, trying to hide her smile behind her cup. “She did mention that.”
Erin raised her brow. “That you’re a good girl?” Alex nodded. “She does not lose time.” She chuckled softly.
“Well, I think I lost her for tonight. So, whatever was happening between us, is over.”
“Don’t lose hope, Cabot. She could come back any time soon. They’re just doing the typical winning ritual.”
Alex frowned as she looked back at Erin. “Ritual?”
“They take shots, depending on the score they made.”
Alex raised her brows. “Is that even safe?”
Erin shrugged. “Not sure, but don’t be too surprised if your little redhead comes back all drunk.” She chuckled as she took a sip of her drink.
Alex sighed. “I guess.”
“Everybody!” Tina got up on the table in the living room, getting everyone’s attention as they turned the music down. “Those who want to play the bottle, gather around! We got drinks and dares!”
Erin turned to look at Alex. “Let’s go play.”
Alex frowned. “No way. I don’t want to have the bad luck of having to kiss some drunk person.”
“And what if that drunk person turns out to be Casey?” Erin smirked as she grabbed Alex’s hand and pulled her to the living room. “Count us in!”
Alex sat beside Erin and sighed as she looked at the people that gathered around. She was sure that these people were either the ones that were way too drunk, or were somewhere in the middle, and the rest just decided to ignore it or were too into their own things. Her eyes landed on Casey for a moment who was in front of her and laughing with Tina as the people started to play. The first few rounds were stupid things like ‘take off your shirt’ ‘drink two shots’ ‘kiss this person on the cheek’, making Alex realize that these people were a bunch of teenagers and couldn’t believe that most of them -if not all- were law students. She couldn’t help but laugh the moment the bottle landed in Erin, and it so happened that the other side landed on one of Casey’s friends, who dared her to go to a room with her. Alex’s eyes widened as Erin agreed, telling her that they had to loosen up, and then followed the girl. She was too distracted as she saw in surprised how they disappeared, but her attention was brough back when she heard yelling and clapping, her eyes landing in the bottle who was pointing at her, and the other end happened to be on Casey.
“Cabot and Novak!” Alex’s lips parted as she tried to say something, but right away Tina spoke up again. “Since Alex doesn’t know what to say, I dare you two to seven minutes in heaven!” Everyone started cheering on.
“What?” Alex simply said, her eyes landing on Casey who was already standing up, chuckling, and telling Tina something. She shook her head and walked to Alex, extending her hand to help her get up.
“C’mon.” Casey offered a sweet smile.
Alex gulped but grabbed Casey’s hand, standing up and following her upstairs. She could hear everyone yelling and clapping, some of them screaming both Alex and Casey’s names as they went up the stairs. Before she knew it, she was being pulled into a room, and as she looked around, she was sure that this was Tina’s room. She cleared her throat as she turned to look at Casey who was closing and locking the door, leaning her back on it as she looked at Alex, smiling softly.
“Casey…”
“We don’t have to do anything.” Casey smiled.
“Are you- seriously?”
Casey chuckled. “Seriously. I sat down there for Tina, it’s just a stupid game.” She shook her head. “And…I hate having to force people into doing something they don’t want to.”
Alex cleared her throat. “What can you get done in seven min, anyway?” She chuckled.
Casey shrugged as she laughed. “I’ve never been in this situation. But I do know you can do something. Make out maybe.”
Alex stared at her for a moment, biting her lip softly. “And would you?”
Casey frowned. “Would I what?”
“Want to make out with me.” Alex snapped.
Casey wetted her lips, her lip lingering between her teeth as she stared at Alex. “I might be a little drunk but…definitely.” She walked to Alex slowly, stopping just in front of her. “Would you?” She whispered softly.
Alex’s breath hitched as she stared up at Casey. She knew she was tall, and probably the boots that Casey was wearing made her a little taller, and she herself was tall, but she loved the fact that she had to look up at Casey. She bit her lip for a moment as she thought about her answer; she knew she had to think fast, the seven minutes could end any time soon. She nodded softly as grinned, and suddenly Casey’s hands were on her waist, and she leaned down to close the gap between them. Alex’s hand went to Casey’s neck to pull her impossibly closer to her, their lips moving against each other’s just perfectly.
Before her mind could register what was happening, Casey was pulling her to her and turned her around to press Alex against the door, Alex moaning against Casey’s mouth which gave Casey’s tongue access to dive in. Alex’s hand got lost in Casey’s short her, pulling her impossibly closer. Casey’s hands rubbed Alex’s sides, accidentally making Alex’s blouse rise up and she took the chance to make contact with Alex’s skin. They finally broke from the kiss, both panted heavily, but as Alex opened her eyes to look at Casey, Casey’s lips landed on her jawline, throwing her head back against the door as a quiet moan left her lips. Casey trailed kisses down Alex’s jawline to her neck, kissing and nibbling softly, she then looked up again to kiss Alex again, and just as her hand traveled down Alex’s hip, a loud knock on the door made them part away from each other.
“Seven minutes are over guys! Get your clothes on!”
Alex panted heavily as she looked at the door for a moment and then her eyes returned to Casey. She couldn’t help but chuckle at herself as she figured she was now part of those horny teenagers she was judging when she got to the party. Casey ran her hand through her hair as she grinned, looking down at the floor as she tried to hide the redness on her cheeks.
“We should uh-“ Alex cleared her throat as she fixed her blouse. “We should probably…”
Casey nodded. “Yes.” She chuckled as she looked up at Alex. “We should go back.”
Alex nodded, offering a shy smile. As she turned to open the door, she felt Casey’s hand on her wrist, bringing her attention back to Casey. Casey’s hand went to Alex’s neck and pulled her close to her, kissing her lips slowly and tenderly, as if they had all the time in the world. Their lips once again met in a perfect rhythm, making Alex’s stomach turn in a good way. Casey then smiled against her lips, pecking them once more before she pulled away.
“Now we can leave.” Casey grinned.
Alex nodded. “Sure.” She breathed out as she smiled, accepting Casey’s hand in hers.
Alex felt everyone’s eyes on her as they walked down the stairs, but her eyes were only focused on Casey. Casey never let go of her hand, walking back to the kitchen, both quietly deciding that they didn’t want to be involved in the game anymore. Alex tried to find Erin for a moment before she brought her attention back to Casey, smiling softly.
“I’ll get you something to drink.” Casey smiled.
“Can I just get some water, please?” Alex smiled.
Casey nodded. “Sure. I need to sober up a little.” She chuckled as she kissed Alex’s hand before she went to find more cups.
Alex sighed happily as she watched Casey moving around the kitchen. The smile never leaving her smile as she leaned against the countertop, but her moment was interrupted as she felt a hand on her shoulder, making her turn thinking that it was maybe Erin. And then she frowned as she found the girl she had been previously jealous of right in front of her.
“Hi?” Alex offered a small smile.
“You really think you got Casey just because you got seven minutes in a room with her? You’re not Casey’s type. We know who you are, Cabot.”
Alex frowned as she shook her head. “What is that supposed to mean?”
“You’re daddy’s girl. I’m sure you’re in school just because of your last name, and if you think you’re gonna get Casey, you’re very wrong. I might’ve let Casey have her fun tonight, but she’s normally always with me. Casey belongs to me.”
“I can definitely tell. Because she’s been with you the whole party, huh?” Alex raised her brow, giving her a defying stare as she crossed her arms.
The girl laughed as she shook her head. “Just because your friend dressed you up for tonight and you got read of your glasses, doesn’t mean you can take Casey. Didn’t you hear? She was supposed to get your attention, a bet was made.”
Alex frowned. “What?”
“Oh, you really think Casey was interested in you? Please. Look at you and look at her. Gotta say that you left it pretty easy for her to win the bet. So congrats to you too. Maybe if Casey chooses, she’ll give you half of the money, but you don’t need it, do you?” The girl smirked as she walked away.
Alex suddenly felt lightheaded as the words played in her mind over and over; she had to be lying. Casey wouldn’t do that. All this time, all those meetings they had, Casey inviting her here, being so sweet and kind even if she’s not fully sober. Did she really do this for a bet? Was she just being nice to win some money? She had to be joking, this was definitely a lie. But…it also made sense at the same time. The sudden interest in Alex, wanting her help to study even if she didn’t need it, her inviting her to the party, and coincidentally the bottle landing in them while she was distracted. They had planned this. She had fallen in Casey’s game. The thought made her feel sick to her stomach.
“Alex?” Casey placed her hand on Alex’s shoulder to get her attention. “You okay?”
Alex took a deep breath as she looked back at Casey, her eyes getting teary. “How much?”
Casey frowned. “What?”
“How much…was the bet?” Alex snapped, trying to hold back her tears as she stared at Casey.
Casey shook her head as she looked at Alex, confused. “I don’t…what bet?”
Alex scoffed. “I knew it was too good to be truth.” She grinned. “You, suddenly taking interest in someone like me. You also believe I’m nothing more than my name, right? Was it fun, Casey? To drag me into your stupid high school game so you could get some money?”
Casey placed the cups on the counter and looked back at Alex. “Alex, what are you talking about? I don’t think that. I-“
“Save it, Casey. I knew this was way too good to be truth. But don’t worry, the bet ended the moment you took me to the room, right? So whatever this was, ends here. I don’t wanna see you again.” Alex gave her a cold look before she walked away from Casey.
Casey frowned as she tried to follow Alex. “Alex! Wait!”
Just as Alex was walking to the door, she ran into Erin who was just coming down from the stairs, her laugh died the moment she saw the look on Alex’s face. “Alex?”
“Let’s go. P-Please.” Alex cried out.
Erin’s heart sank as she turned and saw Casey trying to get to them. “Let’s go.” She placed her hand on Alex’s back and they both walked out of the house as fast as they could. Leaving behind a confused Casey.
The whole ride back to Alex’s apartment was quiet, Alex staring at the window as she quietly cried, her arms wrapped around herself. Erin kept checking on her but decided to save her words, she knew Alex needed a moment to process whatever had happened back there. There had only been one time that she had seen Alex this way, and she thought she would never see her like this again, so it broke her heart. As they made their way to Alex’s apartment, Alex let out a heavy sigh and opened the door, letting Erin walk in first, followed by Alex. She closed the door behind her and leaned her head against it, her whole body shaking as she cried once again. Erin dropped her bag and walked to Alex, wrapping her in a tight hug as Alex sobbed, turning to vanish in her arms.
“Lex, what happened?” Erin whispered softly.
“I-“ Alex sobbed as she shook her head. “I was an idiot.”
Erin pulled away enough to look at Alex. “Did Casey did something to you?”
Alex looked at Erin at the mention of Casey, feeling her heart breaking even more. “I was a bet.”
Erin frowned. “What?”
“That bitch…the one I saw Casey with…she told me that there was a bet, and that’s why the sudden interest in me. I knew it was too good to be truth, Erin. I just knew it.” Alex cried out, covering her face.
Erin sighed loudly. “Lex, I’m so sorry.”
“It’s not your fault. I let myself fall.” Alex sobbed as she shook her head. “Why did this happen?” She whispered softly.
“I don’t know.” Erin kissed her head softly as she wrapped her in another hug.
********************
Alex walked through the hallway to get to her classroom, feeling like everyone was staring at her and were laughing at her. She was sure that half of the school already knew what had happened back there, and it now made sense why all of them were cheering for them to go upstairs. They were cheering for Casey to win the fucking bet and she was so proud of it. She played it so well that she was so ashamed of herself for not seeing it, focusing on how sweet, kind, and beautiful she was, it never crossed her mind that she could do this to Alex. After all, her assumption of Casey wasn’t entirely wrong. She was indeed a heartbreaker. Her trance was interrupted as she ran into someone, almost losing her balance and making her books fall to the floor.
“I’m sorry!”
Alex knelt to pick them up but the person in front of her got them before her, making her look up to find Casey in front of her. “It’s fine.” She snapped as she stood up, followed by Casey.
Casey handed her the books and nibbled on her lip for a moment. “Alex…”
“Save it.” Alex snapped as she looked at Casey for a moment before she walked away.
Casey sighed loudly as she kept walking. This was truly a nightmare for her. The fact that Alex really had believed everything that Rachel had dared to say hurt her and made her a bit upset, but she understood where Alex was coming from. The moment she laid eyes on Alex, she knew she was completely fucked, not being able to take her eyes away until she realized she was being a creep. For months she just stared at Alex and tried her best to always be the one taking their order. She cursed herself once she realized that she had gotten Alex’s order wrong the first time, so she learned it for her, and was happy whenever Alex showed up at the coffee shop. Taking a chance to talk to her had been a real challenge, thinking that Alex would completely push her away and ignore her, but was happy once she realized Alex might be interested in her too. But now, that was all gone.
Erin walked into the coffee shop and looked around, trying to find Casey who was behind the counter. She walked to her and leaned over the counter. “Can I talk to you?”
Casey looked up from her notebook and nodded. “I’m taking five!” She walked to the back door and walked to Erin, sitting with her at a table in the corner. “Erin-“
“What the fuck were you thinking? Are you seriously in middle school to make a fucking bet with my best friend?” Erin snapped, not giving Casey a chance to speak.
“Let me explain.” Casey sighed. “There was no bet. There never was.”
Erin frowned. “What?”
Casey bit her lip as she tried to hold back tears. “I never had the intention of hurting Alex. Everything I did, I did it because I wanted to. Because I had been looking at Alex for so long and I took my chance.” She shook her head as she looked at Erin. “I was never involved in any bet. Rachel was jealous when she found out I was into Alex. She’s-“ She scoffed. “She was fucking childish. I’m too old to do those fucking bets. I like Alex. I never meant to hurt her, or even take advantage of her.”
Erin sighed as she leaned back in the chair. “Well, shit.” She shook her head. “I knew Rachel was no good.”
Casey scoffed. “She thinks she can get whatever she wants.” She shook her head as she looked down at her hands. “And now Alex hates me.”
“She’s hurt, Casey.” Erin shrugged. “She really believed every word Rachel told her. Alex…she overthinks. She has anxiety. She couldn’t get in her head why you would be interested in her.”
Casey sighed. “But you believe me, right?” She looked back at Erin.
Erin offered a small smile. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone being so consistent with Alex. The way you two look at each other…nothing I had ever seen.” She shrugged. “I love Alex. But I believe you. And you gotta make this right, Casey.”
Casey nodded. “I know. But…she hasn’t been here in two weeks.”
“I can give you her address.” Erin shrugged. “She’ll probably kill me but…I hate seeing Alex so sad.”
Casey smiled. “I’d be forever thankful.”
Erin grinned. “And I thought this shit only happened in movies.” She got a piece of paper out of her bag along with a pen. “Our classes end at 4 pm. She should be home by 5 pm.” She handed it to Casey. “And you know better than to fuck this up, Casey.”
Casey nodded. “I know.”
********************
Alex groaned as she walked to the door. “Erin, I told you I wanted stay in today. I’m tired of you coming at this hour and trying-“ her voice died down as she opened the door and saw that it was not Erin.
“I’m…sorry. I just ended my shift, and I…couldn’t come earlier.” Casey offered a shy smile.
Alex shook her head. “What are you doing here?”
Casey sighed. “You’ve been avoiding me. And I want to talk to you.”
Alex scoffed. “Casey…seriously. We’re old enough to do this and-“
“And then you know I’m old enough to be doing some stupid things as getting involved in a high school bet.” Casey snapped.
Alex stared at her for a moment and sighed softly, stepping aside as she let Casey walk in. “Come on in.” She whispered softly.
“Thanks.” Casey said softly as she walked into the apartment. She turned to look at Alex and smiled a bit as she noticed she had never seen Alex dressing so comfortably.
Alex closed the door and turned to look at Casey, frowning. “What?”
Casey looked down at her hands as she smiled. “You uh…you look really cute.”
Alex tried to hide her smile as she crossed her arms. “Can I offer you a drink?”
“Are we switching roles now?” Casey grinned.
Alex couldn’t help but grin slightly. “Case…”
“I never meant to hurt you, Alex.” Casey said almost in a whisper. “There was never a bet.”
Alex sighed as she looked down at the floor. “Why should I believe you?” She then looked back up at Casey.
“Because I don’t lie.” Casey shook her head. “I know better than to lie. And I never once lied to you. I…” she scoffed. “Everything that Rachel said, it was all a lie. She was jealous. She hated the fact that I was falling for you, and that I was trying to get your attention, and I-“
“You’re falling for me?” Alex frowned.
Casey stared at Alex with wide eyes. “I- Alex. I uh-“ she cleared her throat. “I just-“
“Who’s nervous now?” Alex grinned.
Casey huffed a laugh. She looked at her hands for a moment and nibbled on her lip. “I really didn’t want to hurt you. I didn’t take you to the room because they were going to pay me.” She smiled shyly as she looked back at Alex. “Tina noticed you were distracted, everyone was drunk. I moved the bottle.”
Alex raised her brows, a smirk appeared on her face. “Makes sense.”
Casey laughed softly. “I was scared that you’d reject me. I didn’t want to take advantage of you. I just…really wanted to kiss you.” She smiled.
Alex tilted her head. “So no bet?”
Casey shook her head. “No bet. And yes…I am falling for you, since the first time I saw you, I knew I wanted to do anything in my power to get your attention.”
Alex smiled sadly, looking down again at the floor. “I really believed her.”
Casey walked slowly to Alex, her fingers going under her chin to make Alex look up at her, smiling softly as she fixed Alex’s glasses. “You look beautiful without glasses but…I really like to see you with them.”
Alex blushed slightly as she smiled. “You should be upset that I snapped at you, and that I didn’t believe you.”
“That’s childish. We’re both old enough for those games.” Casey grinned. “I’m sorry, Alex. I really am. But if you give me the chance…I want to make things right. I want to take you on a date.”
“You’re cheesy.” Alex smirked.
“And you like that, don’t you? It’s the type of thing you only see in movies.” Casey chuckled softly as she placed her hands on Alex’s neck.
“Yes. I want you to go on a date with you.” Alex smiled, placing her hands on Casey’s waist, and leaning in to kiss her lips softly.
Casey smiled for a moment against her lips, but brought their lips back together, the same butterflies as the first time showing up in her stomach.
“Cabot being the good girl and Novak being the tomboy.” Munch laughed along with Fin.
Alex rolled her eyes. “We stuck with our roles.” She smirked as she looked at Casey.
Casey shrugged. “And we made it work perfectly, even now after all these years.” She smiled as she leaned in and kissed Alex’s cheek, fixing her glasses. “Only took a date to have her wrapped around my finger.”
“Oh, says the one that was the cheesiest of the both of us. Bringing me chocolate croissants with my coffee, flowers almost every week, prepared unexpected dates.” Alex smirked.
“And you loved those. And still do.” Casey leaned in to peck her lips.
“Just get married already.” Elliot teased as he took a sip of his drink.
“This is really out of a movie, you two are too cliché.” Olivia chuckled as she looked at them.
“We wouldn’t want it any other way.” Alex grinned as she chuckled, rolling her eyes at the teasing.

Chapter: 9/?

They looked like a mess walking into the hospital a few minutes later, Niki now in Alex's arms since Casey had handed her over so she could drive, knowing Alex hated driving. They were both in sweatpants, Alex with Casey's old softball hoodie on and Casey with a worn-out NYPD hoodie she had stolen from Elliot at some point. Niki's cries echoed through the room as a nurse walked over to them, and they quickly explained what was going on, the nurse guiding them to a room off to the side. Things started to move quickly after that, and soon enough, they had a doctor in front of them confirming what they feared. “It is indeed appendicitis; we’ll need to perform a small surgery to remove it, but I assure you, you have nothing to worry about. It's a routine procedure and minimally invasive.”
They looked behind the doctor to where two nurses were starting to get everything ready to take Niki to the OR. The doctor saw the look on their faces, and she tried to reassure them: “We’ll take good care of her; she’s in good hands.”
They looked back at Niki, the sight of the little girl pale, frightened, and in pain, brought tears to their eyes, and they struggled to keep their emotions in check. They reached out to her, waiting to at least explain what was happening. “Sweetheart, the doctors and nurses are going to take care of you, okay? You are going to go, and they'll help you feel better,” Alex told her, giving her little hand a squeeze. “We are going to be right here waiting for you.” Casey gave her a kiss on the forehead and allowed the nurses to start wheeling her away.
Niki's cries only intensified when she saw that Alex and Casey weren’t going with her, and with a broken sob, she uttered the words that almost broke them: “I want my mommies!!” It was a desperate plea, one that left them frozen on the spot as the nurses took her past the doors they couldn't follow.
They stood there dumbfounded by what they had just heard until another nurse gently guided them towards a couple of chairs in the waiting room. Niki had never referred to them as anything other than Casey and Alex, and they didn’t expect her to. They had never put any pressure on it because they knew it was not their place to push her to do something she wasn’t ready to do, and it wouldn't change how much they loved the girl. But hearing it, hearing her refer to them as their mommies filled them with a surge of emotions that left them breathless.
As they settled into the uncomfortable chairs in the waiting room, Casey reached for Alex's hand, twisting the ring on Alex’s finger over and over again. "Please tell me I didn’t imagine that?" she whispered, her voice choked with emotion. "She called us her mommies."
Alex tightened her hand around Casey's. "I heard," she murmured, running her other hand through her messy hair. "I never thought... I never imagined..."
They fell silent, the two attorneys who were usually so eloquent having been left speechless by a child. Their thoughts were swirling with a mixture of disbelief and joy before going back to the fact that Niki was still about to have surgery, and although it was minor, concern was still running through them. They knew they would have to talk about it later, see what Niki would do once she wasn’t in pain and exhausted.
So they sat there anxiously waiting for news of Niki's condition. About an hour that felt like an eternity later, a nurse approached them, a reassuring look on her face. "The surgery went well," she told them, smiling when she saw the way Alex kissed Casey in relief. "Niki is resting now; she should be waking up soon."
Casey and Alex breathed a sigh of relief, their shoulders sagging with the weight of tension that had been lifted. "Can we see her?" Alex asked.
The nurse nodded, offering them a gentle smile. "Of course. Follow me."
They followed the nurse down the hallway, reaching Niki's room where they found her lying in the hospital bed, her small form still and peaceful as she slept, the frown that had been plaguing her earlier gone. Despite the IVs and monitors that surrounded her, she looked every bit the resilient fighter they knew her to be.
The nurse who had accompanied them into the room assured them that they would be able to take her home in the morning and that her doctor would be by later to give them more details. Alex and Casey gave the woman a grateful glance and thanked her. "I'll check her over and then leave you two alone with her," she said, stepping towards the bed and meticulously checking that everything was alright.
The movements around the bed startled Niki; her eyelids fluttered open as she slowly blinked awake, her eyes darting around the room in confusion as she struggled to make sense of her surroundings. When the nurse tried to put a hand on Niki's shoulder to calm her down, she flinched, tears pooling in her eyes from the discomfort, the unfamiliarity, and the grogginess. She hadn’t seemed to notice Casey and Alex at the door and just started crying and repeated the words that made their hearts flutter. “I want my mommies,” her bottom lip wobbled as she pleaded with the nurse, “please.”
The nurse signaled them over and into the room. “Your mommies are right here, darling, look.” Alex and Casey approached Niki's bedside, each one of them standing by one side of the bed.
"Hey, sweetheart," Casey murmured, her voice soft and soothing as she leaned down to press a kiss to Niki's forehead. Noticing how Niki calmed down once she saw that they were next to her, she still let out a couple of tears, but they were swiftly wiped away by Casey's thumbs. "How are you feeling?"
"My tummy doesn't hurt anymore, but I’m tired," she mumbled, her voice faint with sleep.
Alex smiled at her, reaching out to brush a gentle kiss against Niki's cheek. "We’re glad you feel better, baby; you’re going to be okay."
Niki gave them a small smile as she reached out, her hands seeking the comfort that radiated from the two women. "I... I'm going to be okay,"
However, it seemed like in just a second Niki's brow furrowed as she glanced between Alex and Casey, her eyes filled with doubt. "I... I called you my mommies," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "Is... is that okay?"
Their hearts broke a little at the uncertainty in Niki's voice; Alex quickly reached out to gently cup Niki’s cheek. "Oh, sweetheart," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion. "Of course it's okay. We love you so so much, Niki. You can call us whatever you want."
With a small smile, Niki settled back against the pillows, her eyes drifting closed once more as she drifted back into sleep. As Alex and Casey watched over her, they were so happy that Niki was going to be okay and grateful that they were exactly where they belonged by Niki's side.

Chapter 8
Summary: Alex and Casey are called to the precinct where they find Olivia trying to get a little girl to open up.

Chapter: 8/?
Tumblr media
Alex was always a light sleeper; she had been since she could remember, having it only get worse with her insomnia thrown in the mix. Casey, on the other hand, slept like a rock whenever she was given the chance. Not to say that she didn't sometimes struggle with sleep after particularly horrible cases, but she still slept better than Alex. So generally, over the last months she was the one who woke up first whenever Niki started to make noise around the apartment in the morning.
When the soft sound of footsteps and the noise of their door opening interrupted the silence of the morning, Alex knew her sleep was over.
“Alex,” she heard the whispered voice next to her and opened her eyes to find the almost six-year-old next to her side of the bed.
“Mmm, what's up, sweetheart?” she replied, still half asleep, sitting up and trying to shake the sleepiness from her head.
Niki reached one hand towards Alex, the other one holding her abdomen. “My tummy hurts,” Niki whispered, her voice tinged with discomfort.
That immediately woke Alex up, who got out of bed and picked Niki up, which was slowly becoming more difficult as she grew. She walked them out of the room and softly closed the door behind them, trying to give her wife a few more hours of sleep. She stood outside, placing the back of her hand against Niki's forehead, concerned when she felt it slightly warmer than it should be. “Is it only your tummy, or does anything else feel bad?” Alex asked her gently, really hoping this wasn't a repeat of the last time Niki had caught a stomach bug; she could do the flu no problem, but stomach bugs—those were Casey's territory.
Niki nodded, letting her head drop against Alex's shoulder. “I feel yucky,” she admitted, squashing any hope Alex had that this was just a stomachache.
Concerned and battling whether she should wake Casey up or not, she continued her gentle questioning. “Does it feel like you want to throw up?”
Niki nodded again, her eyes filling with tears as she fought to hold back a wave of nausea.
“Oh, baby,” Alex said softly, walking them down the stairs to the kitchen. “How about we get you some plain toast to see if that settles your tummy a little?”
She walked them inside the kitchen and sat Niki on the countertop. The girl whined a little when Alex let go. Alex grabbed the bread from the cupboard and placed two slices into the toaster, noticing the way Niki clutched her tummy, a pale look to her complexion that Alex didn't like. She wrapped her arms around Niki while they waited for the toast to be done, Niki leaning her head against Alex's chest and miserably trying to wrap her arms around Alex. Gently, she ran her fingers through Niki's hair, untangling the knots that had formed there through the night, her motions gentle, hoping to offer her some comfort.
When the toast finally popped up, Alex quickly retrieved it and led Niki over to the couch, settling them both down in a cozy nest of blankets. Niki nibbled on the toast and sipped on a sippy cup of water Alex had grabbed from the fridge, her movements slow and deliberate, her discomfort evident in every tense line of her body.
"I don't want anymore," Niki whispered, her voice small and shaky.
“That’s okay, sweetheart,” Alex grabbed the plate and put it on the coffee table in front of them. “You don’t have to eat anymore if you don’t want to. Why don’t you close your eyes for a little bit and rest?”
Niki rested against her, her eyelids drooping with exhaustion. With a gentle hand, Alex brushed a stray lock of hair from Niki's forehead, tucking it behind her ear and noticing that she still felt warmer than normal. She wrapped them in a blanket and laid back, Niki curling up against her, eventually falling into a fitful sleep, Alex soon following in her steps and drifted off too.
Casey came out a while later, expecting to find Alex and Niki reading in Niki's room like she usually did most mornings. Instead, she saw from the top of the stairs a bundle of blankets on top of the couch that she was pretty sure contained both her girls. She padded down the stairs softly, and when she reached them, she was puzzled. Alex had Niki wrapped in her arms, the little girl frowning in her sleep. She reached out to smooth out the crease between Niki's brows and accidentally woke Alex up in the process.
Alex looked up at her with her big blue eyes, and Casey couldn't help but lean down and give her a soft kiss. “Hey, what are you two doing out here?”
Casey sat down on the coffee table, moving the leftover toast out of the way. “She woke me up, has a tummy ache, and some nausea, and I’m pretty sure a fever is starting.” Alex readjusted them, grateful when Niki didn't wake up and instead just grumbled a little and frowned again. Casey repeated her previous actions, rubbing her thumb soothingly across the girl's eyebrows until the frown disappeared again.
“Poor baby.” She turned her attention to Alex, pointing to the plate that had been left over. “Have you eaten yet?”
Alex shook her head. “No, I made her some toast to try and settle her stomach, but as you can see, that wasn't much of a success.”
Casey stood up, grabbing the plate to take with her. “I’ll make you a coffee and some fresh toast,” she kissed Alex’s forehead, getting a happy hum from her wife. “Mmm, you are amazing.”
She returned soon after with said things to try and eat breakfast with her wife who literally had her arms full. She helped Alex sit up without waking Niki, and soon enough, they had both eaten and discussed what to do when the girl woke up and the stomach bug came in full effect, Casey teasing Alex for her very evident fear of any and all bodily fluids.
Their planning soon went to shit when Niki woke up doubled over in pain and curling in on herself as she cried miserably.
“Hey, hey, it’s ok, is your tummy ache worse?” Alex tried to soothe her, wanting to understand what was happening.
When Niki didn’t answer and instead let out another cry of pain, Casey uncurled her until they could look at the girl again. “Niki, I need you to show us where it hurts, ok?” she said softly but with a voice that was dripping with urgency. “Can you do that for us?”
Niki seemed to understand that they were trying to help her, and so she took her hand to the lower right side of her stomach. Casey followed Niki's hand, and when she laid hers over where Niki had pointed out, the girl yelped in pain.
Alex saw the way Casey's eyes panicked as she pulled her hand back. “Shit, ok baby, we’re going to help you feel better. I’m going to pick you up now, ok?” Casey picked her up, keeping her wrapped up in a blanket and trying to be as gentle as possible while Alex was trying to process what was making her wife panic.
“What—” Casey interrupted her, going towards the front door, already halfway successfully slipping her feet into her running shoes. “Lex, I need you to grab our purses and the car keys. We gotta go.”
Alex turned and followed her wife's instructions, still not understanding what was happening but clearly getting that it was urgent. “Go? Go where?” she said when she met Casey at the door with their purses, keys and jackets, opening the door for them to step through. “I’m pretty sure she has appendicitis
