movies - his feelings about his love in the 90s bc all he wants is to be accepted and have his relationship be 'normal'

people watching - he can't come out so he just watches other people's relationships and hopes for his own like that one day

disaster - maybe his first crush? it could be a disaster if he told them and they didn't feel same, they could potentially ruin his life

best friend - about luke reggie and bobby of course

astronomy - his relationship with luke (be so fr they absolutely dated in the 90s)

jatp h/c in relation to ballroom and latin dances because I said so

Luke: doesn’t have the patience for slow or repetitive ballroom but will Waltz if his partner wants to as long as it’s complex, he loves a good complex Quickstep, with lots of footwork

Reggie: has the fun bubbly personality that’s perfectly suited to social latin. his favourites would be cha cha and rumba which are simple in a way that lets you mess around and randomly spin your partner.

Alex: h/c he would enjoy jive for a similar reason he enjoys drums, in that the repetition of small intense movements would help settle anxiety, but ultimately Alex is built for ballroom, the waltz and tango specifically.

Julie: a queen of the ballroom. she wins “most elegant” at competitions and she can perfectly execute any style. her favourite is actually the waltz. because it’s what her mom and dad used to dance around the house when she was little

Bobby: A samba dancer. Only crazy people like the samba, probably a similar amount of crazy needed to deal with sunset curve when they were alive enough to be in danger when they did stupid things.

Flynn: She’d much rather dance hip hop. So she tends to lean towards the stationary latins, her favourites are actually the fast paced progressives. And she is correct.

Carrie: the showcase nature of latin drew her in and then the joy of spinning kept her there. she dances a wicked salsa or cha-cha. She also dances a stunningly elegant foxtrot.

Willie: A surprisingly beautiful foxtrotter, maybe it’s the smooth floating like motion that’s paralleled on a skateboard, or maybe it’s the way Foxtrot is perfectly designed for romantic jazz

Caleb: Latin. All of them. He’s a show off.

Nick: Not the confident dancer, but he’s consistent, he likes the latins if only because he can stay in one spot most of the time

Ray: He’s not a dancer. But he attended beginners classes before his wedding enough to not step on Rose’s feet during their first dance. He can dance a simple Waltz and that was always enough.

Carlos: Jive king. Enough said.

Rose: h/c a tall elegant romantic woman. she enjoys classic ballroom because it’s about connecting with your partner, whereas latin connects with an audience. She enjoys the swooping float of a waltz or foxtrot.

Two and a half songs later, the door attached to the house swings open, and Bobby finally appears at the top of the small flight of stairs. He’s got his guitar, and he says, “Sorry, guys,” the second Luke signals for Alex and Reggie to stop, but there’s definitely something off about him. The years-old bags under his eyes that he tells fans are eyeliner stains are even more pronounced than usual. He’s still in his pajamas, a housecoat and slippers thrown on like he’s eighty. He moves slowly down the stairs and slings his guitar strap over his head with a wince. Luke’s skin crawls with worry.

But instead of expressing concern like a good friend, or even like a normal human, Luke says, “Where the hell were you?” and it comes out harsher than he meant it to.

Chapter 2

Carrie walked in here without a plan, but as she waits for a response from Mrs. Harrison and despite Flynn bristling beside her, she knows that this is what she wants. No matter the anxiety that pierced through her heart when she first heard the news, Flynn being cast is the best thing that could’ve happened. - Flynn looks to Julie, at the grimace on her face. Before they were Julie and Flynn, it was Julie, Flynn and Carrie, and even before that it was just Julie and Carrie. They had been friends since before Flynn knew either of them. Practically sisters. There are photos of them side by side as babies. Flynn still remembers the day they found the photo album in Julie’s attic, dusty and little beaten up, the three of them spent the rest of the afternoon flipping through old memories, all the ways Julie and Carrie’s lives were intertwined.

They’re not entirely sure whose great idea horror night was, but here they all were, huddled up and watching the scariest movie any of them had seen. None of them actually like horror but that didn’t seem to matter. Alex and Willie were hiding their faces in each other’s shoulders, Julie had her face in a pillow. Luke was trying very unsuccessfully to keep his eyes on the screen. Reggie isn’t even bothering trying any more. He’s completely clocked out, lying on the couch and simply staring at the ceiling and bouncing his feet in the air. Bobby is… trying to watch the movie from his spot on the floor leaned up against the couch. But he keeps covering his eyes with his hand and peeking through his fingers. 

Reggie can hear the next jump scare building and refuses to look at the television but he takes stock of how his friends are handling it, smiling to himself in private amusement. Bobby screams when everybody jumps and Reggie can’t help the giggle that escapes. His friends all send him betrayed looks and he laughs again.

“Your scream is kind of cute, I’m sorry,” he directs at Bobby.

The statement seems to prevent Bobby from forming a coherent thought and he stumbles over his words while their friends laugh.

“It’s not CUTE!” Bobby exclaims once he’s regained his composure.

“Kinda is,” Reggie repeats with a grin.

“Shut up,” Bobby mutters, turning back to the TV.

“Make me!” Reggie surprises everybody by saying, issuing a very clear challenge Bobby’s way.

Nobody’s watching the movie any more and they’ve all directed their attention to the pair in the middle of the room. 

“Is this really happening?” Willie whispers to Alex.

“Fucking finally,” Alex replies.

“All of you shut up,” Bobby exclaims before directing his attention back to Reggie. “What did you say?” 

“I said… make me,” Reggie replies, the challenging tone still in his voice.

“Any preference on how I might do that?” a flirtatious undertone laces through Bobby’s words.

“You can choose,” Reggie sits up and sends a smug look Bobby’s way.

“This is weird,” Luke says as he stands up to leave the room, waving at the others to follow him.

Alex groans but follows Luke’s lead and drags Willie and Julie out with them.

Neither Bobby nor Reggie acknowledge their departure.

Somebody on the TV screams and Reggie giggles again. 

He clicks his tongue, “see, just not as cute.”

“I’m not fucking cute,” Bobby mutters under his breath and Reggie raises an eyebrow as he leans forward.

“Yeah. You fucking are,” Reggie is defiant in his response.

“I thought I told you to shut up?” Bobby growls as he grabs Reggie and pulls him down to crash their lips together. Reggie recovers quickly, considering he knew what he was starting. He wraps his arms around Bobby’s neck and lowers himself down to the floor, kissing Bobby back.

They’re interrupted by obnoxious applause when their friends return and pull apart to turn glares on the intruders.

“Must you?” Bobby asks, unimpressed.

“We must,” Luke beams at him. “Congrats! Took you two long enough.”

“Whatever,” Bobby mutters and Reggie lets out another set of giggles, leaning into Bobby’s side. Bobby wraps his arm around Reggie and directs a fond smile his way before schooling his face back into a scowl as his friends return to their spots.

“We still committed to finishing this?” Alex confirms and the others nod. He sighs and they all settle in as before. The only difference is that Bobby no longer has any real interest in paying attention to what’s on screen, stealing kisses with Reggie as the movie plays.

it’s ace week (yay!)

so as a resident asexual here’s a list of jatp characters that are asexual because I - an asexual - said so (along with explanations because I cannot in fact not over share):

when I first watched jatp, before I delved into our beautiful online community I was discussing h/c in relation to character sexualities with my friend (because it’s clear they’re all queer) and I had told her that reggie wasn’t really giving bi vibes but it wasn’t pan either. then in a moment of genius I went “biromantic asexual” and she responded with “..YES!” and I’m right.
