Blind anon again! Injuries are indeed a reason to portray cloudier eyes (although be sure to do research on what exactly would cause it! Sometimes injuries to the eye leave scars but no perceptible difference in the iris/pupil itself, when the damage is hidden in the gelatinous chamber behind. It depends!) and Even some illnesses do cause some eye difference, but a good way to balance this out is to have another blind character whose eyes are not shown that way! Having multiple disabled characters is always a good idea, as we will often find a community of our peers! Even if the cat world, where the communities are more rigidly defined and cut off from each other, there is a strong possibility that more than one cat will be blind or mostly blind (keep in mind that some useable sight is not uncommon! For cats like elders, cats with exceptionally pale eyes (lack of melanin can cause light sensitivity and even sight issues) and cats whose injuries to the eye could conceivably not leave scar tissue on the eye itself, just to give a few examples, it’s a good idea to show a character without those tropes that is secure in themselves and their disability; it’s not a tragedy for us, it’s just our life!

One of the marks of a good author is the ability to work in constructive criticism to make an even better story! with a bit of thought i think i'll tweak my crowflame design a bit--his more scarred side with remain a milkier color, but the side with less scarring will look as it did before. littleleaf's eyes will remain that milky color; they were always very pale. if there's a problem with any of that, let me know!

i do have a very self indulgent question, particularly about Monster AU Ghost and Price, but also extending towards the rest of 141 with their involvement

at one point you mentioned that wraiths were rare, and ghost would likely feel pity towards another one

what would happen if they did come across another wraith? especially someone fairly fresh, maybe even young, younger than any of them. is there anything anyone could do to help them? would they help? price seems to know how to handle ghost well enough, and seems like hes been around since ghost's transformation, but how would ghost himself handle seeing someone else go through something like what he did? if he had to, what advice would he give them that he never got?

this!! is!! such a good question, anon!!!! I think there's a lot of sides to that kind of situation, especially if it’s a younger person since I hc Ghost as having a massive soft spot for kids.

I think if it was just Ghost and the newly-born wraith, he'd try to mercy-kill it. The circumstances that lead to the creation of a wraith are truly harrowing, and while Simon understands the desire for revenge that burns at the core of every freshly made wraith, he also believes their plight is a kind of torture. In his mind, it would be kind to put one out of their misery. He wouldn't take any pleasure in it - I think overall, it would be a miserable affair for all parties involved.

If Price or any of the others were around, I think they’d try to convince him to take them under his wing so to speak. But while Ghost currently operates decently with his support system, he’s extremely lucky and should be considered the exception to the trend. Price was instrumental in his recovery - years of working under him solidified Price in his subconscious as an authority figure he could trust. When Ghost lost control, he could still rely on instinct - even with his mind fracturing, Price never changed. But not everyone has this kind of person immediately available to them, and it was crucial that Price got to him as soon as he did. What Ghost is now is not what a wraith commonly looks like. Price dragged him back from a brink.

New wraiths are sort of like rabid dogs, with no sense of self preservation. They’d approach every confrontation with the kind of frenzy you’d see in someone fighting for their life. They’d also be basically impossible to immobilize - you’ve seen how Simon goes wispy at times, imagine trying to handcuff a cloud of smoke. If it came down to a situation where any of the 141 were in danger, Ghost wouldn’t hold back. He’d put the other wraith down.

But if Ghost met another wraith who’d survived that first explosion of fury and managed to calm down, AND the 141 were with him, I think he’d try to help. They bring out the best in him.

My main fandom is actually mainly aroace characters, sex or romance are never even brought up. Unfortunately that comes from them all being robots and, according to the lore guy, "robots cannot reproduce therefore they have no need for romantic attraction". So yea, not the most optimal circumstance. In addition it's also a toy theme so it's not for everyone's taste. Of course the fandom still ships and there are people creating overtly horny character designs, so there's really no winning there. I used to be more on board with shipping but have recently realised that I don't actually like it much anymore.

Are blind people less likely to have an aquarium pet? Like fish? There are many reasons to have such a pet, such as a sense of responsibility and routine, or companionship.

However, aquarium pets are normally to be looked at, so I wonder if blind people are less likely to get them? There are limited ways to interact with aquarium pets beyond just looking, but most blind people have a little vision so I wonder if seeing movement and shapes is enough, or if a pet you can't interact with is uninteresting?

(Context: my writing project involves a vampire maybe getting some pet leeches for bloodsucking solidarity. The vampire was once a dead body, so has thick corneas similar to Fuch's Dystrophy and is therefore blind - does this mean it's unlikely he'll get an aquarium pet?) Also thanks for running this blog! Very helpful advice!

Blind People And Aquarium Pets

I find the idea of a vampire character having leech pets to be kind of cute.

According to my research, Fuch’s Dystrophy involves blurred and distorted vision that worsens over time. I also imagine that if the vampire lives longer than humans, the condition would have the opportunity to worsen even more unless he is unchanging or physically frozen in time. There is a chance the character may have some vision, as you know many blind people do. This vision could be used to enjoy an aquarium pet.

Most blind folks I know prefer pets they can feel or hold close to them, although this might actually be a preference for furry / fuzzy things. I see no reason why a blind person or character couldn’t have an aquarium pet even if they couldn’t see at all. For your purposes, such as solidarity with a similar creature, it sounds fine.

In addition to most blind people having some vision, people still get pets for a variety of reasons. Maybe some people want pets that don’t require a lot of attention. Maybe they happen to have a special interest in fish, for example, and enjoy having a pet fish despite not being able to see it well or at all. Or perhaps they can see color and enjoy brightly colored fish. Wanting brightly colored pets might limit them to fish or birds. Maybe their apartment only allows aquarium pets. The possibilities are endless. While some blind people may find the idea boring, I’m sure there are some people who would enjoy an aquarium pet for different reasons. And while my first instinct is to say that it probably wouldn’t be as likely a choice given how blind folks interact with touch, it isn’t impossible either, especially because people are all different and need different levels of pet interaction. If you are unsure about it, there is no harm in also including other blind characters with pets in the story.

I think as long as you consider accessibility the way you are now, it’s fine. Showing the reasons he chose an aquarium pet will help make it more clear, as well as display agency and his own unique needs. Also, a character making the choice to adopt an aquarium pet is very different from someone else choosing a pet that may be inaccessible to them.

I would love to hear from other blind folks. What are your thoughts on aquarium pets?

Edit: In the notes and tags, people are sharing both the experiences of having brightly colored fish with some vision, as well as the sensory experience of having an aquarium or pond. Someone has also shared that for your purposes, leeches can be handled and touched without incident. So leaning into the sensory experience will also help and make for interesting writing material.

I really love how Donnie and Leo are comfortable being hugged by Gus! Leo seems genuinely happy to be receiving affection and, even with his injured shell, Donnie doesn't pull away from the contact! Plus Donnie was leaning on Gus!

I get the sense that the two of them don't really receive much physical affection from anyone but each other but I'm so happy that Gus is there and just showering them with it.

Is Gus the only staff member that the boys are close with? They obviously don't share information with Gus but other than that, how close are they with him? I'm just so curious about this additional lore about their home lives!

and there are a few other staff members that the gemini are relatively close with, which i've touched on in the past! gus is probably who they're closest with, though, and the only one they get any physical affection from. he's known them since they were first adopted by big mama, and his main 'job' at the hotel has long been to keep an eye on them and keep them safe when they're in the hotel. he has the 'late shift' and spends nights in a big dog bed out in the hallway of the gemini's floor, guarding their rooms while they sleep, just in case anything happens or they need him.

i would say they're very close with gus! he's like a 'beloved family dog' and 'protective dopey uncle' combo and did a lot of caretaking when they were little-- the only constant amongst the ever-revolving cast of nannies, aside from their mother's occasional appearances.

that being said, there's a reason gus shares the color of another gemini character rather than having his own. despite everything, the twins are well aware of where gus's loyalty lies at the end of the day, and who he answers to. and as lovely as their relationship is, it's not them.
